Other Companies copy Amiga's and TAO's Ideas

worte on ANN that on the pages of the Danish news service
SOL.dk his attention was called to the fact
that possibly other companies are desirous of copying Amiga's idea of the
"write once - run everywhere" philosophy, thus pushing Amiga out of the market even before
they get in there.
The article is talking about QualComm trying
to create a standard operating system called BREW[TM], Binary Runtime Environment,
to be used on cell phones. If you take away Wireless you (almost) have what
TAO Group is doing.
Due to QualComm's particulars this works with every device equipped with their DMA chipsets.
BREW[TM] sits between the chip system software and the application allowing programmers
to let their applications access the cell phone's functionality without having the
chip system source code or a relationship with a handset manufacturer.
QualComm want to electronically certify all BREW[TM] programs before they can run on
consumer products and ask a fee from every of those spreading such programs (cell phone
companies). Hendrik thinks this might be indicating how important this technology
will be for the future.

Since today, the new Aminet CD-ROM 41 is available from dealers. The Aminet CD 41 -
February 2001 - contains more than 800 MB (uncompressed) of software in almost
a thousand archives. Since Aminet CD 40, numerous MB of news have been added. As
a special highlight, the Aminet 41 contains the full version of the beat'em up game
Capital Punishment.

This morning we activated the first test of our unmoderated news posting!
This means ANYONE can post news directly to Boingworld
for immediate display on the main page! The usual top left icon of the newsitem
will though be an "Unmoderated Icon" and the news item will only be visible for

Interview with Patrick Roberts
Christoph Dietz has done an interview with the programmer of 'zAMilo', the HTTP server
which runs on test.amigadev.net:
Amiga-News: Hello Patrick, can you describe yourself?
Patrick Roberts: Age: 32, Born: Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, Profession: Digital Effects Supervisor. I'm currently freelance and start a film for Dreamworks in a few weeks.
Amiga-News: What is your background whith Amiga?
Patrick Roberts: I started in 1987 with a dorm-mate's A1000, then got my own A500 shortly after. As next came an A3000, and now the AmigaDE. Before Amiga, I had a C=64, Vic-20, and used to program on a PET at a local library.
Amiga-News: I can't find a program from you on Aminet. Don't you released programs for the "classic" Amiga?
Patrick Roberts: The only programs I released for the Classic were some Playstation utilities - but did so anonymously to avoid any problems with Sony. (wotizpsx, tmd2lwo, and psximgtls)
Amiga-News: When and why did you start development for AmigaDE?
Patrick Roberts: I think it was last August. Right after the SDK 1.0 was released for Linux.
Amiga-News: We can see one of your products running on test.amigadev.net. It's the webserver. Did you use an existing webserver to port to AmigaDE or is this a complete new httpd?
Patrick Roberts: "zAMilo" was written from scratch, but was inspired by a micro-http server released by Ericsson for their mobile phones. I wanted to create a very small HTTP server for the AmigaDE that could be used for configuring an embedded system with a web browser. I'd like to someday use a browser on my PC to serve my VCR, tell my coffee maker when to have a cup ready for me in the morning, etc...
Amiga-News: What does "zAMIlo" stand for?
Patrick Roberts: The Ericsson server is called 'zilo', so for proper respects I kept their name and added in the standard Amiga "AM".
Amiga-News: What is the roadmap for this product?
Patrick Roberts: As I get time I want to add basic CGI and SSI support. I'm not sure beyond that.
Amiga-News: Is this your only project for AmigaDE?
Patrick Roberts: No ;P And that's one of my problems... not enough time for all of them :) Here's a list of my projects that are available from the Amigadev.net FTP archive:

Patrick Roberts: I have both versions for testing, but I mainly use the Linux SDK.
Amiga-News: Do you think that OS4.0 for the classic Amiga's is needed?
Patrick Roberts: I don't have a classic any more (I own one, but have loaned it to a friend). I'm mainly looking forward to AmigaDE commercial release, but it would be nice if Amiga would continue to support all the classic users.
Amiga-News: You know about the amiga community. How do you think about it?
Patrick Roberts: I'm always amazed with the knowledge level of the Amiga community. I really happy to be a part of a community with so many geniuses that I can learn from.

Amiga is Looking For Developers for PDA Applications

providing content and we will open a new mailing
list for it - the particulars will be announced in
a few days.
This project is for both open source and
commercial content providers, so no matter what
your choice of development is, you are cordially
invited to apply. To get further details, though,
you must have a signed NDA on file with Amiga.

New NetBSD Amiga Drivers
Drivers for Individual Computer's "ISDN Surfer" and Zeus Development's "ISDN Link".
The NetBSD Amiga driver for the Siemens ISDN chip-set got support for two more cards for the Zorro-bus
added.
- Individual Computer "ISDN Surfer", id 4626/5
- Zeus Development "ISDN Link", id 2189/3
Up to now already supported:
- BSC ISDN Master 2092/64
- ITH ISDN Master II 5000/1
- VMC ISDN Blaster 5001/1
The interrupt level for the ISDN Surfer is software managed, other cards must be
switched to IPL 2 by jumper setting.
Closer information about the isdn4bsd configuration are to find inside of the included
electronic manual pages (man isdnd) and
here.
Those drivers as well as the entire ISDN sub-system are content of NetBSD-current,
the development part of NetBSD, and will occur in the NetBSD-1.6 release. External testers
are asked to run a release of the 1.5 part until 1.6 has been published; for 1.5 the last
released isdn4bsd-0.96_BETA is available as additional
package (but without drivers for ISDN Surfer or ISDN Link).

Of course also for this reason our policy to become part of the ALD
will be the same as ever. It's not possible to get an entry if you're

Yesterday was a day to party for Virtual Dimension: their 10th anniversary!

- Who has got a ZorroIII Amiga A3000(T) or A4000(T) and a PicassoIV
graphics board and can use the PicassoIV only if it was
"forced" to ZorroII mode via jumper setting (Zorro auto detect off)?
- Who has got an A4000 with DMA capable SCSI card or an A4000T and
an elder PicassoIV with "bridge version $1" (see P4Info-Output),
running the PicassoIV trouble-less in ZorroIII mode (WITHOUT the ZorroII jumper set)?

unimportant:
Which model, when did you purchase it, which CPU board, which expansion boards,
which modifications done, which RAM equipment, "Buster revision, P4Info-Output, etc.
I have got such a ZorroIII problem and I'm working on a solution and looking
for "companions in trouble". If I was able to solve this problem
(assumedly by replacing two socket chips), I would try to help others concerned
(e.g. by centralized buying).

Update of the Stock Exchange Software Bonds
Bonds is a financial software fitted for share management.
The software is in especially fitted for the financial market of Germany and
best handles shares traded within Germany.
Another update of Bonds will be released on weekend. Several small enhancements
have been implemented, again some bugs were fixed. New is a version check via
the Internet. The import filters have been reworked, a new filter allows to
import stock quotation data from www.stockwatch.de, where historic quotations for
German shares are to find.
Work on the depot manager proceeds, a finished version is expected for the next
weeks. Also the manual in PDF format is about to take shape, so the users will
have a properly manual at hand in the future.

Shared ZLib-Library for PPC
At the Aminet there now is a shared library for the popular ZLib compression (gzip)
running on 68k as well as under WarpOS! The archive can be downloaded from Aminet
under
util/libs/zlib-library.lha.
The library is freeware, source code and developer stuff for the StormC compiler are
included for interested people.
I would be pleased if the library were supported by Xarc programmers and others.
According to the PPC used speed can reach about 5 MB/s (unpacking) or 1 MB/s (!!, packing)
at packing rates up to 75% (text)!
The zlib.library also will be utilized in the new version of Digital Almanac III, cause
this will give executables about 30kB smaller than before.

GFX Lists Update
Thanks to the help of many Amiga users the lists with Amiga games and demos
supporting graphics boards could be enlarged with many entries. The layout
of this site was enhanced and designed more predictable, too.
Moreover there is a new list on the site (Amiga section) listing programs
supporting multiple CPU's (on installation). Since one often doesn't remember
which programs offer an optimized version e.g. for the 060 after the computer
was accelerated this list might be helpful.

Payback in Progress
In the current status report #18 Apex Designs announced that the new game
'Payback' will be in trade in about two weeks. At the same time a playable
demo version will be made available for download.
In an interview with the Amiga-Future the programmer James Daniels described
Payback as follows:
"The player takes the part of young driver on the run and tries to become a
big gangsters' boss. The game is completely non-linear. To finish a level
the player simply has to collect a certain amount of points. How to achieve
this is up to him-/herself.
You can act on the local Kingpins' advice, uncover secret missions or join a
gunfight. There are a lot of hidden surprises to discover, so one must play the
game several times to find all of the extras. The game was inspired by Grand Theft Auto,
but I invested much effort into the game to make sure it will lick GTA in all respects."

Heise: Met@box in the Deep Red
»Sometimes things come more worse than expected: Recently in September
last year the Met@box AG from Hildesheim, Germany, announced to incur a loss
of around 15 Mio DM in the business year, instead of realizing profit. Now the
manufacturer of set-top boxes notified a loss of about 19 Mio DM.
According to preliminary calculations volume of sales was at 50 Mio DM the company
disclosed on this Tuesday.«

Descent 2 Port for Amiga
Some time ago I've started a Descent 2 port for the Amiga
(WarpUP and 68k version). Unfortunately I'm not able to
finish this port due to lack of time, cause among other things
I'm working on commercial games for the Amiga :-).
(And these are yet more important than porting an old game).
An interested programmer who would like to finish this port
may contact me at any time and receive the current source code.
Current stage:
- Crashes on leaving (and sometimes also on leaving a level,
I guess memory freed twice)
- Warp3D support comes miscoloured (but software renderer works)
- Network support doesn't work
- In case of the "Bobbing Movement" I'm not sure, if it looks like
it should do.
- Still a lot of debug output inside of the source
- Cockpit isn't displayed correctly
The code was compiled with StromC-gcc or gcc-WarpOS.

3ivx, Ready for Global Television!
The video compression format '3ivX' is now officially implemented in
MooVId and
SoftCinema.
At the request of a reader here a link to a

Following the complete press release:
January 29, 2001- Happy Machines releases the second preview of their
next generation video compression technology called 3ivx. Small file
size and high quality video is one part of the 3ivx advantages, the
other one is the truly multi-platform nature. This is great for video
conferencing, video-on-demand, broadband content providing,
interactive television but also for UMTS (or G3 mobile phones)
implementations.
True mutli-platform support means that it is available for
Windows: Windows Media Player plug-in or QuickTime plug-in
MacOS: QuickTime plug-in
Linux (x86, PPC) & Solaris: XAnim
BeOS: Media Player plug-in
Amiga: WarpUP (MooVId for 68k & PPC) and PowerUP (SoftCinema)
The decoder is available on the site
right now. For the moment,
however, the encoder is reserved for 3ivx partners.
"Quality and multi-platform is one thing, but particularly important
for the movie studios is encryption, watermarking and Digital Rights
Management" said Jan Devos, President of Happy Machines. "That's why
we made sure our 3ivx codec is standard compatible with most of the
encryption and DRM systems available"
"I was amazed by the quality" explained Mr. Alan Redhouse, Chairman
of the Eyetech Group.
"That's why we are bundling this codec with our
next generation AmigaOne hardware".
The current release is 5 to 20% better than the most efficient codecs
out there. In comparison with MPEG-2 that means a ratio of 1:12 while
near DVD quality. This indicates that the 3ivx video codec, while
still in development, is already one of the best.
There is a lot of interest in such a high performance codec. The 3
million page views on the 3ivx.com web-site after the first preview
release in December show that very well.
Happy Machines also referred to as the Think-Tank is a small Belgian
company representing an extremely creative team and a large
international network of inventors, software and hardware developers,
designers in various fields such as imaging, satellite

As already reported, "AmigaDE zAMilo V0.098" is running as http server on a test server at Amiga, Inc.. Christoph Dietz has asked Gary Peake and Götz Ohnesorge for more information about the http server 'zaMilo' utilized on test.amigadev.net:

Gary Peake: Yes, we installed it here at Amiga Inc. on our Linux based servers running the Amiga SDK.
Amiga-News: On which OS is the system running? AmigaDE isn't running native, is it?
Gary Peake: We run Red Hat on the servers. AmigaSDK is being hosted there. zAMilo runs on AmigaSDK.
Amiga-News: What does "zAMilo" stand for? Is it a mixed up akronym for "Mozila" (with an "l" missing.)
Götz Ohnesorge: "zAMilo" is a http server written by Patrick Roberts from Atrix. You can find more about it in the programs readme:
"zAMilo is a mini-http server. The compiled lite binary is less that 4k and is very fast. It was inspired by zilo by Stefan Hellkvist which was created by Ericsson to run on their mobile phones.
zAMilo serves simple http GET requests, which is enough for most sites. It also has the ability to serve the stdout of any other tool as an html document. In this way it emulates rsh via http."

GFX Lists

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
Over on Amiga.org, there's a lot of talk the last day or two about a
new "Coldfire" processor model from Motorola. Pegged at 100% 68060
compatible and running at 300Mhz, it's generating a lot of excitement
from Classic Amiga users. As nearly as we can tell, this isn't all
that new news, seeming to go back originally to an article that
appeared in "EE Times" on October 17 last.
Whatever the case, does it really matter? We don't think so. The
future of the Amiga is the new DE. The old 68K market is almost dead.
All you need do is look at "Amiga Update". We've cut back to monthly,
and the issues are smaller, because there just isn't much Amiga news
any longer (we could run more articles by reporting on announced plans
to develop software, or alpha releases, but we prefer to wait until
there's a reasonably finished product). Until the DE is really
established and growing, that's the way it will be.
Even if there's somebody left to make boards for the new chip, all it
will run is the older software. It might be handy for compatibility as
an add-on board for new DE based machines, but we really doubt that's
going to happen.
Now, if there'd been a fast, truly compatible Coldfire chip a couple
of years ago ...
Other Amigans are justifiably concerned about the persistent rumors
of money problems at Amiga Inc. We've been concerned as well. However,
we're not ready to panic and write them off. The collapse of the .com
investment market has made coming up with cash difficult for all
startups. But, as MooBunny reported recently after talking with Bill
McEwen, Amiga claims it's not failing to meet obligations and has
products ready to go, unlike the .coms which died. That may make all
the difference in the world, as long as Amiga can promote them and
sell some. The fact that they apparently can't afford to attend key
trade shows is quite worrisome, but doesn't necessarily signal the end
of the world. As we've said often, time will tell.
Meanwhile, there is still news in the Amiga community, as you can see
below. It's mostly positive news, and we hope you enjoy it.

If possible, in a future newsletter, I'd like to see any info that
might be available concerning someo of the great Amiga software
products which seem to have dropped off the "Radar" during the last
few years.
Products such as the SuperBase database (Still the best database I've
ever used), Final Writer from Softwood (Again, the Best word processor
I've ever used), etc.
Are these products going to be part of the New Amiga? What happened
to them?
For instance, I read a report somewhere that the person who owned
SuperBAse had died and that his widow now owns the rights, but is Not
in a position, either financially or professionally, to do anything
with those rights. True? False? Is there a "White Knight" software
firm which could bring the product back??

We'd love to run such information, and will if we get any stories or
press releases that cover these products. SuperBase - most recently
SBase 4 Pro or Personal - is still the database manager I use when I
want to get real work done. At last year's Amiga show in St. Louis, it
was possible to pick up an update disk from the current owner of the
software rights. Since then, I've not heard a word.

MediatorNET.device for Mediator PCI for PCI Ethernet network cards.
The new version of the driver enables simultaneous using of several
PCI Ethernet cards in Amiga fitted with the Mediator PCI busboard.
Support of New Style Device (NSD) has been added and operation

Why do you need a network card in Amiga?
The ethernet card enables connecting Amiga with other computers.
With such a connection you may have access to the Internet with a

PureBasic is a new "high level" programming language based on
established BASIC rules. It is compatible with any other BASIC
compiler, whether its for the Amiga or PC format. Learning PureBasic
is very easy! PureBasic has been created for beginner and expert
alike. Compilation time is really fast. We have put a lot of effort
into its realization to produce a fast, reliable and system friendly
language.
The syntax is easy and the possibilities are huge with the "advanced"
functions that have been added to this language like pointers,
structures, procedures, dynamically linked lists and much more. For
the experienced coder there are no problems gaining access to any of
the legal OS structures or API objects.
PureBasic is a portable programming langage which currently work on
AmigaOS (680x0 and PowerPC) and Windows computer systems. This means
than a same code can be compiled natively for the both OS and use the
full power of each. There is no bottlenecks like a virtual machine or
a code translator, the generated code is an producing an optimized
executable. The external libraries are fully written in hand optimized
assembler, which produce very fast commands often much faster than
C/C++ equivalent.

New version of sKulpt released
sKulpt is the successor of legendary 3D software "Sculpt Animate
3D/4D" by Eric Graham and Byte By Byte. The raytracing program used to
have many fans for years, because it was easy to use, good value for
money and efficiency. In amateur and professional circles many
pictures have been created with this software. The successor sKulpt
wird will be completely develloped by CdBSSoftware, and already
supports PPC boards and Warp3D.
At the moment, sKulpt is a project in development, yet supporting :
o RTG support (any screen compatible with Warp3D drivers)
o 060 and PPC versions (both compiled with StormC v3, waiting for
StormC v4 w/GCC to have a good optimization). PPC version requiring
WarpOS.
o use of 3D hardware (works well with both CyberVision 64/3D and
B|CVisionPPC)
o use of textures (any image file format supported by your installed
Datatypes).
Around 60 percent of its features are implemented and available.

Requirements
To run sKulpt, you need :
o An Amiga (2000, 1200, 3000, 4000) with either a CyberVision 64/3D
or a BlizzardVision PPC or a CyberVision PPC (the only Amiga graphics
boards providing hardware 3D acceleration at the moment, respectively
with the S3 Virge and the 3Dlabs Permedia2 chips), running at least
OS3.0,
o A minimum of 8 megs of free memory
o Warp3D v3 installed and properly working with the provided test
samples (WarpTest and Engine), either the 68K or the PPC version.
o A shell window to launch sKulpt, in which you will have set the
stack to around 120 Kbyte ("stack 120000") before launching sKulpt. It
will look in the "gfx" and "textures" subdirectories for files (gfx
sub directory contents should not be modified otherwise sKulpt may not
work).

N E W S T O R M C D E V E L O P E R S ' P A C K A G E
Dolgesheim, den 28.8.2000. Last Sunday, in the sub-division of the
company HAAGE&PARTNER Computer GmbH in Dolgesheim, the new StormC
developers package was presented for the first time in a select
circle. During the yearly summer festival, a lot was discussed about
the past and the future. Among the many guests were employees of the
company Hyperion (Heretic II, ...) and ESCENA (PowerPC-Boards), who
showed enthusiasm after the presentation
The most important feature of the new developers system is the step
forwards towards the new AmigaOS. At the moment everything still runs
on the Classic Amiga, and that is how it will be presented, but
everything was developed anew with easy portability in mind.
A big step towards more up-to-date system has been made through the
decision to support the GNU-Compiler in a modified version. The
current Storm-Compiler is not less professional, but not easy to port
to other systems. The new StormGCC is very compatible to the StormC
compiler, supports known preprocessor symbols (for instance __FUNC__),
writes in 68K as well as in PPC the Amiga Hunk-Format in object files
and creates the same debug file format as StormC. The PowerPC version
of StormGCC supports the PowerOpen/WarpOS conventions.
In the new StormC the network capabilities are of very high
importance. StormC now can be used by a programming team working on
one project, without problems. An important utility in this respect is
CVS Concurrent Versions System. With the aid of CVS multiple
developers can work on one project or source code at the same time,
and link their changes in a controlled fashion. StormC shows in the
project version number and status of the files, and color marks files
that might give problems.
The network capabilities are rounded off by the now distributed Make.
In a network, multiple computers can be used simultaneously to compile
a project. StormC finds free computers automatically, and moves
compiling jobs to those. A Make Logfile keeps track of various
compiler commands, error messages, and allows for an exact error
diagnosis in complex projects.
Further novelties can be found in the project management and the
editor. With the aid of the global search the entire project or all
projects, including hierarchical projects can be searched with full
text search including AmigaDOS patterns. It is possible, by double
clicking the search result, to go directly to the relevant position in
the source code.
The user can now create his own sections, and decide what kind of
files should be put there, and how they should be edited, shown or
compiled. Sections can be sorted alphabetically and colored in
different colors A helpmeet gives extensive Online Help to StormC,
GCC, AmigaOS Includes and Autodocs. A bubble-help provides basic help
when required.
The new editor now also colorizes CVS-conflicts, installer- and
AmigaGuide-commands according to new dictionaries. When typing the
name of known system functions, the appropriate prototype is shown,
which makes further input of parameters for these functions much
easier. The double-click on a file path (for instance in an include
command) loads the file in a new . Furthermore the keyboard layout is
freely configurable.
A new addition is a program for documentation. With StormDOC one
creates ToDo-lists, bug reports, and program documentation. It keeps
track of all actions of the user, knows the various destination groups
and circumstances of the list, who can all also be configured as
search criteria.
The new debugger cooperates on 68K- and PPC WarpOS programs with the
StormCompiler and StormGCC. The debugging is now no longer limited to
one program - Tasks and Shared Libraries can now also be edited step
by step. When Enforcer-hits occur, the debugger immediately shows the
position of the source of evil in the source code.
All in all, StormC 4 is fully revamped and greatly enhanced tool,
that will once again speed up software-development on the Amiga, and
will create it more professionally.

Opinions
Steffen Häuser of Hyperion, responsible for the conversion of Sxx for
the Amiga, said about the new compiler: "The combination of the gcc
code generator with StormC's advantages of the debugger, the
comfortable IDE, the MixedBinaries and the possibility to create
Shared Libraries in an easy way looks like a very nice compiler
system.
The distributed-make facility to reduce compilation time and the
integration of CVS into the IDE are very welcome. We are looking
forward to employing the new StormC in future projects. Adaptions of a
first project from gcc to the new StormC worked flawlessly. Support
for Elate VP Code in a future version will also be very interesting to
us."
Availability
The price of StormC 4 is 498,- DM. Customers of older versions of
StormC can get an update for the price of only 198,- DM. The first
presentation was at WOA 2000 in December last year. StormC 4 is
available right away.

As reported in issue 02/2001 of c't (page 176), the source code of 'Star
Trek Voyager: Elite Force Holomatch v1.10' is available at
3D Downloads.
Ravensoft published the source code to make the development of add-ons easier.
The "Source Code Release" is only some kind of "Add-on-Source-Code". That means that
this release does not contain the 3d engine, but only parts of the game-logic to make
the programming of add-ons easier. To use these add-ons you need the windows or linux
full version of the game. These sources cannot be used to port the game to the Amiga.

MAS MPeg Device v1.0
Since today, Chris Hodges offers an MAS MPeg Device on his homepage for the
MAS3507D player by Dirk Conrad (which is connected to the parallel port).
This finally enables people to use all software which uses the standard
commodore mpeg.device, such as AMPlifier, Frogger or MPegMovie.

FormAldiHyd v2.0 Beta with WacomIV Support
On 1st of January Chris Hodges has updated his tablet driver software for
the Aldi/Tevion/Medion and AipTek/HyperPen tablets and included an
experimental WacomIV mode. As he does not own such a WacomIV tablet himself
and had no time to continue development due to lack of time, he depends on
the response and feedback of users with WacomIV tablets who test the new
driver and tell him what works and what doesn't.

According to amiga.org Blittersoft has
received the latest beta of iFusion from Microcode Solutions.
According to Blittersoft iFusion has been successfully tested on 060/PPC

F1: eBay Client and 2 New Games
F1 Software has released detailed information about their announced eBay client
'AmiBud'.
This runs on AmigaOS 2+ and faciliates the use of eBay.
Additionally two new games are announced. These will be developed in C++ and
shall come out for Windows, Amiga, MacIntosh and possibly for AmigaDE. Further
details regarding these games do not exist yet.

JST makes the installation of games on harddisc possible and offers patches that

New Version (V.44.50 beta 7) of the HSMathLibs

Amiga Inc. released the specifications for developers to create software for Palm/Handheld/PDA computers
on the official AmigaSDK developer list [AMIOPEN-ML]. Following the data:

SoftCinema and How to Get New Codecs
Sebastian Brylka from Fun Time World did a summary of a Polish article
(see title link) which we review here by his agreement.
«Jacek Cybularczyk, author of SoftCinema, released an article about the origin
of new codecs for the video player on Amiga.com.pl.
This article was written in Polish, thus here only the most important details.
Meantime the program SoftCinema can read the two formats OpenDivX and
soon 3ivX, too. Still missing e.g. is MPEG-4 support and several other not
quite legal codecs. The problem about those is that sources of the formats are
not free available. But there are some possibilities to fix this problem, too.
Though there are codecs for MPEG-4 and DivX on Macintosh, but due to missing
documentations of the Macintosh resources and extensions this all might be
difficult, somehow. The authors also don't seem to have a PowerMac for disassembling.
In case of the second possibility the author wrote that many might think this to be
moronic, but the thing works. You take the Windows dll's for help. Work started about
two month ago. The technic used is called "binary translation". First the x86 code
gets prepared for the C preprocessor in form of a macro instruction. Much of the
work takes the program TX86 which can read the dll's (comparable to Amiga libraries)
and convert them to C code. This isn't done total automatically, so you still have to
correct much yourself. The this way created code is compiled and can be executed under
a Windows emulated environment called WIN32ENV. In this a part of Win32 and some
important libraries are emulated. This all works on a PowerPC native only. Though all
possible codecs run, but speed is at flabby 1 FPS.
To get things somehow faster the code, which contains about 17,000 lines of macro
instructions, must get optimized. Unfortunately without optimization 72 MB are not enough
to compile, thus the rest of the work were done under APUS with a 200 MB SWAP file. For
an optimized compilation a 1 GB SWAP file was needed. The procedure took about 13 hours.
But the effort was worth while, meantime everything runs much faster. Next the dll's
will be converted to assembler to gain even better speed. This is possible after
analysing the C codes and using what GCC has generated. Later on everything will get
optimized once more. After profiling often used program parts either will be re-written
or more heavy optimized.

VirusHelp Denmark with New Mailing List
VirusHelp Denmark has created a new mailing list at YahooGroups, which will
replace the old ML at eGroups. The new mailing list will be public, so
everybody will be able to read it. Postings will only be accepted by VHT
themselves.
All members of the old mailing list at eGroups were already subscribed to the
new mailing list at Yahoo and should trouble-less receive the announcements via e-mail,

Elbox: Version 1.2 MediatorNET.device
Elbox has released a new version 1.2 of the MediatorNet.device for Mediator PCI
for PCI ethernet network cards, today. Changes in the new version:
The new version of the driver enables simultaneous using of several PCI
Ethernet cards in Amiga fitted to the Mediator PCI busboard.
Support of New Style Device (NSD) has been added and operation procedures
have been optimised in order to reach the maximum transfer performance.
MediatorNET.device is a Sana-2 standard driver. This driver is compatible
with all the Amiga TCP/IP software packages which can access a Sana-2 driver
(e.g. Miami, MiamiDx, Genesis, and AmiTCP).

A regular listener of the demo radio station 'nectarine *' wrote:
"Hi and hello, as regular listener I have sad news which could still be turned into a
story with happy end until end of February.

you'll find a very special internet radio. They broadcast music of game classics
and well-known sceners. Further, you can upload tracks as a small home producer.
This all results in an interesting music mix which clearly stands out from the
usual droning.
Well and now, where's the problem?
Nectarine needs a new HOST... here's the original message:
Why Nectarine can close at the end of February
- For now, Nectarine is friendly hosted by the company where i work
(http://www.poliris.com) as Orange Juice
webserver etc.. They help us a lot with hardware, technologie and prices for
LTP (remember the travel for Amiga competition at LTP IV). They paid every
month for an Easynet 12 mb/s ATM line but in March they will pay only for the
bandwith that the company needs. So, as nectarine isn't a company project i
can't ask them to pay for us. Maybe you noticed that they didn't ask for any
adverts at all.
- Nectarine needs a new host (best is in Paris) where i can put the 2 computers
of Nectarine Radio. The total amount of bandwith needed could be a very stable
1.5~2mb/S or more and we can find relays everywhere to reduce the total amount.
In exchange we can promote the company who host us with banners, jingles etc...

VirusHelp Denmark: New TCP Trojan Found
A new 'TCP' Trojan was found in New Zealand. So far it isn't known what
installs the trojan, but Zbigniew Trzcionkowski, the programmer of Safe, has already updated
his virus detector so that the Trojan can be found in memory.
The TCP Trojan replaces "c:mount" by a 7484 byte long file and creates a new file "c:f".
The new file c:mount is a clone of the Vaginitis virus.

Motorola COLDFIRE® Processor News
As the manufacturer was criticized continuously by the current 68k users because the
currently available COLDFIRE® processor has neither FPU nor (sufficiently 68k compatible)
MMU, the engineering team has designed a new ColdFire (4e) which contains both FPU and
MMU and is supposed to replace the 68k generation.
Motorola wants to take this step to "untie" their current customers from the (apparently
still sold in huge amounts) 68k processors. The soon to be released, ABSOLUTELY 68k compatible
ColdFire 4e is supposed to take their place and replace the old processor family in future.

test.amigadev.net Runs on AmigaDE
The test page created by Amiga Inc. test.amigadev.net/
runs according to a http:// request issued by telnet on a server "AmigaDE zAMilo V0.098".
Looks like the FTP server would be running on wu-ftpd (it's possible that it may be ported
to AmigaDE).
The server reacts to "finger", but nobody was logged in. www.amigadev.net and test.amigadev.net
are at least hosted in entirely different nets, not on the same computer.
The test page currently shows a logo which poses the question: "Can you write multimedia apps
that run in a dozen host environments?" and answers it with the 'Artix logo and "zAMilo http server"
powered by Amiga Digital Environment'.

MiamiDX lisences arrived, Lyra under production
From now on the X-Surf ethernet / MiamiDX bundle again is available form
all of the trading partners. Who already owns a X-Surf card can purchase
MiamiDX at a special price by presenting his/her bill - simple ordering by
e-mail. At the time being MiamiDX is the only possibility to use T-DSL
(German Telekom) with the Amiga and wasn't available from German vendors
for a long time.
The keyboard adapter Lyra is now under production. The first adapters in versions
for A2000, A3000, and A4000 will be available from all of the trading partners in the first
week of February. The Eternity company already verified Lyra to be the only adapter that supports
simultaneous pressing of several keys. This allows playing games also with a PC-keyboard connected
to the Amiga.

INET DIAL v3.838 now includes support for OS3.9 Genesis TCP/IP stack
as well as remote email retrieval. INET DIAL is an integrated Internet
and remote computer connection facility which handles 'dial-in' and

Genesis is provided with a simple installation facility. INET DIAL now
includes support for reading e-mails remotely which had been previously

Development of the e-mail strategy game constantly precedes.
As for Tales fo Tamar the players send their moves in form of e-mails
via the Internet to the Eternity server. This method allows
turns from tow to three days and thus a more dense game atmosphere.
Additionally a sort of online chat will support the feeling of togetherness.
The players can directly log-in there and chat with other users or
players.

Version 0.11 of SoftCinema is available for download for registered users.
The following changes and enhancements were done for the movie- and animation player:
- QuicktimeVR Bugfix.
- New AVI Codec: DIVX.
- New QT Codec: 3ivX (will not work until the 3ivX codec has been released,
which should happen in a few days).
- Some problems with displaying of HAM8 fixed.
- Some problems with AVI color palette handling fixed.
- For option 'GRAY' now a FULLSCREEN is taken, to utilize 8bpp screen
- Other smaller changes for codecs speed enhancement regarding.

You can find new information about current graphics boards on the website of CyberGraphX.
Among others it is reported there that G3/G4 Power PC-cards (Shark), which has been announced by Elbox

New Details about the CD32 Games Install Kit v4.0 NG
Due to great demand here a more detailed list of what has changed
in Install Kit v4.0:
- Install2001 supports RTG graphic mode for owner of graphics boards.
- There are both, a Gadtools and a MUI interface for the Install Kit.
- Many new games can be installed / emulated.
- Install2001 uses almost a half less memory, which especially enhances compatibility.
- Both interfaces were completely made over and now are much more user-friendly.
- There are more settings possible.
- CD-ROM support was enhanced substantially.
- The build-in emulator now supports more CD32 specific stuff.
Moreover of course there are many other enhancements as well as bugfixes done.
The CD32 Games Install Kit v4.0 is exclusively available on the
'The Best Of Airsoft Softwair Gold Edition' CD-ROM, which can be ordered from me.

"The Hunting Games" by Frank Abbing ready for download. There are
the following games:
'Plakat schiessen', which works similar to the Moorhuhn game principle,
cause one should shoot as much signboards as possible within one minute, but of course
not the hunters!
In the case of 'Scheiben drehen' you shoot on plates until all of them
face into the same direction. A plate hit will always do one quarter rotation more
than the others. Who will make the best time?
Amiga Arena - UAC Design Updates!
There are several updates online for games Frank Abbing from UAC Design made available
to the Amiga Arena. The quiz game Awaking AGA/ECS is now there as executable version.
The game can be played directly from harddisk, no longer .adf format. Risiko v1.7 is now
there as the freeware version.

'Ermentrud (Amiga)' accidently now has got an interactive 'dialog system' using
the common multiple choice method. Since also the inventory system is finished the next demo version
will almost (almost (almost (...))) show a completed engine, already. Unfortunately this demo doesn't
exist for now, but arguably will do somewhere down the road....
Originally we would have liked to already take the 'tavern scenes of the movie' last weekend,
but we didn't....

Jacek Rzeuski is working on DOpus4 again and has made available for download a new beta version
4.15f of DirOpus4 on his website.
DirOpus is a file manager programmed by Jonathan Potter and Greg Perry from
GP Software. In 1999 the source code of the program was
released under GNU Public License rules. Jacek Rzeuski then started to revise and enhance the
program.
Due to lack of time Jacek then wasn't able to work on it that intensive anymore, and
Paul Huxham published new beta versions. Now Paul decided not to cooperate with Jacek in
the running project, but has started his own DirOpus4 project. Paul's homepage is to find

Quake Deathmatch by "The Spirit of AMIGA"
On Friday 26th, 2001, 'The Spirit of AMIGA' will organize their first
Quake deathmatch. This match will take place on an official server to see how the
response will be. 'The Spirit of AMIGA' wants to bring together AMIGA online players
and possibly later on to found a clan and/or open an own server. Everybody who would like
to participate is heartily welcome to this match. No special software is needed for this

Bill McEwen
Amiga-News: In your latest Executive Update you announce that the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) would be a great fun for the Amiga community. But how would this be a great fun if Amiga Inc. is not a exhibitor there?
Bill McEwen: We were there. We had two companies showing Amiga enabled devices at the show. These meetings were private, but we were there :-)
Amiga-News: Can you tell us details about this devices and the companies behind?
Bill McEwen: No. We are under NDA with each of them. Announcements will follow soon.
Amiga-News: In an interview with Corinna Cohn you told the community that Amiga Inc. is low on money and our readers are now wondering if this means that Amiga Inc. is closing down. So why are you low on money?
Bill McEwen: We are far from closing down. It takes money to run this business, and we planned to raise money in summer of last year. Our timing was off, and the market had a big downturn. As of the time of the discussion we had not secured more funding.
Amiga-News: So I can assume that there is no financial shortness anymore?
Bill McEwen: We will continue to watch every dime very carefully, this is not a market to be crazy with your money.
Amiga-News: Can you tell us the names of Amiga Inc.'s investors?
Bill McEwen: The "Invisible Hand Corporation, LLC", and "Net Ventures, BV".
Amiga-News: What do these investors expect from Amiga?
Bill McEwen: To make money.
Amiga-News: They are not interested in the Amiga products to use in their own products?
Bill McEwen: They are investors not OEM's.
Amiga-News: Is going public an option for Amiga Inc.? Can we expect to buy stock options in the near future?
Bill McEwen: Public offering is not possible at this time. But you can expect to have opportunities to invest in the future with Amiga.
Amiga-News: Francis Charig told me (as published on amiga-news.de) that the AmigaDE will be ready in the first half of this year. Are you agreeing with this?
Bill McEwen: Yes. This is the plan.
Amiga-News: How and then (more exact) will AmigaDE hit the marked?
Bill McEwen: Initially in some OEM hardware platforms, and then it will get more functionality and be out in other hardware with software following.
Amiga-News: According to MeterNet they are only waiting for AmigaDE to release their Set-Top box. When do they get AmigaDE and will this version be the same as planned for release in the OEM hardware?
Bill McEwen: Yes, the initial release is for this type of hardware OEM.
Amiga-News: Also Francis spoke about memory protection and why TAO is not planning to implement MP into the operating system. But you already announced that Amiga Inc. is going to implement MP into AmigaDE. Is this plan up to date?
Bill McEwen: Tao is not, and they never were going to. This is consistent to what we have said since the beginning. Amiga is handling the MP. So the plan is the same that we have said since the beginning.
Amiga-News: Can we expect MP to be in the first versions of AmigaDE?
Bill McEwen: No, not in the first version. It has been planned for later.
Amiga-News: Why do you think MP is needed?
Bill McEwen: I personally think that this is better suited for the desktop and server market.
Amiga-News: What can AmigaDE developers expect to be added into the next SDK update?
Bill McEwen: Sound, 3d, and numerous other new tools and enhancements.
Amiga-News: When can they expect the next update?
Bill McEwen: Targeted for end of February - middle of March.
Amiga-News: More than 15.000 copies of SDK are sold. How many developers are registered? And how many of them are contributing software?
Bill McEwen: A little over 2,000 busy working.
Amiga-News: This means that at least 13.000 people only bought the SDK to support Amiga Inc. with some money or for to add the SDK to their treasury?
Bill McEwen: You asked how many are registered. We have thousands who are working and have not registered.
Amiga-News: Do you know a reason why they didn't register?
Bill McEwen: No. It is really up to them. We have also located two sites that have created SDK's that are pirated. I believe that we have shut them down now, but we know that several copies were downloaded before we stopped them.
Amiga-News: Which is the most amazing software contributed right now?
Bill McEwen: There are so many, I do not know where to begin. I would encourage people to look at the developer section of the web site to see many of the titles that are being worked on.
Amiga-News: While the "World of Amiga 2000" in Cologne Fleecy announced that about 1.5 Mio units of AmigaDE are already sold. What is the market and when will the AmigaDE based products show up?
Bill McEwen: Products will begin showing up in March of this year.
Amiga-News: A press release from Thendic Electronic Components just crossed the wire that tells that "in September 2001 Thendric will release a modified Handheld-PC for the consumer market under the label 'Amiga(TM)'." Are they only licensing the Name "Amiga"? Or will they use AmigaDE?
Bill McEwen: There is only ONE owner of the Amiga name and Trademarks, Amiga Inc. We own the worldwide exclusive rights to all of the Amiga properties, that were once in the hands of Gateway. Thendic has licensed AmigaDE for their devices. We were not supposed to say anything for another month, but since they have announced, then it is true they are one of many new licensors of AmigaDE.
Amiga-News: And are there other products?
Bill McEwen: Several in the works and all over the office.
Amiga-News: How many copies of AmigaOS3.9 are sold? How close are we to an PPC-Version of AmigaOS 4.0?
Bill McEwen: OS 3.9 I do not know right now. We had several thousand out by before Christmas, and I have not seen the reports of the sales since that time. We should have some numbers up on the site soon. As far as meeting the sales requirements for the OS 4.0 PPC version, we are not even close. We are still evaluating the market need for this product, and I hope that we can show that there is a true market and business for 4.0, and even other versions in the future.
Amiga-News: When can we expect that the decision is made?
Bill McEwen: Working on it now.
Amiga-News: What are the improvements in the classic AmigaOS to legitimate the version jump to 4.x?
Bill McEwen: Once the decision has been made, then you will see a targeted feature list and then we will all know.
Amiga-News: Do you know about the status of development at Eyetech and bPlan?
Bill McEwen: I have been focused on other funding issues, and Fleecy has been working more closely with these developments.
Amiga-News: Will the AmigaOne be available in Q3/2001?
Bill McEwen: That is the plan.
Amiga-News: How can the Amiga community support Amiga Inc. at best?
Bill McEwen: The best way to directly help is the purchase of SDK's and other products. And the more people creating product for Amiga the better. We have recently received several new games for AmigaDE and they are great. It is really encouraging to see all of the development efforts underway, and the more people that we have developing the better.
Amiga-News: Are these games only converted from other platforms or are they completely new? Are they cutting edge in graphics, sound and idea?
Bill McEwen: All of the above.

ISDN now included in NetBSD/Amiga
The Zorro-bus connection for Siemens-chips (isic) are now included in NetBSD-current.
The subsystem is able to communicate with DSS1 (Euro-ISDN) mediate-stations. There are drivers for many PCI, PCMCIA,
ISA, ISAPNP, and Zorro-bus - ISDN devices.
At the moment there are drivers for the following Zorro-bus-devices available:
ISDN Master, ISDN Master II, ISDN Blaster.
We are still working on drivers for the ISDN Surfer and on tests with PCMCIA-devices for the A1200.
The subsystem will be available with release 1.6 of NetBSD. Additional help for configuration is available in
the documentation and from the manual
pages for isdn and isdnd.rc.

First of all the company 'Jester Interactive' which owns the copyrights of many older Amiga games,
has granted us permission to post many of the games from the cult company 'Graftgold' for free download on our site:
The first free game that is available is 'Fire & Ice' which should ring a bell to every Amiga-Fan.
Furthermore more commercial games and PD classics like 'Magic Forest 2', 'Seek & Destroy', 'Mayhem', and many more
have been made available. The first version of the new 'Amiga Applications Compendium' has been put online. This allows the
user to search for more than 300 Amiga applications, companies and developers.

The team arround 'Extraterrestrial Developing' is currently working on a Crusader clone.
The first demo version 0.2b of the game called 'Silencer' is ready for download.
The game runs on a 640x480 screen with 256 colors and needs 16MB RAM and 15MB on the harddrive.
The team is still looking for a distributor.

Greg Wible: I was born in Medina, Ohio - a small town in between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. I graduated from University of Cincinnati and moved to Southern California in 1980. BTW, I understand that one primary ancestor Frederick Wible (aka "Weibel") sailed from his home in Rhine Province through Rotterdam in 1751 to relocate and start a new life in Western Pennsylvania in the US... so my family roots can be traced back to your country, Germany.
Amiga-News: How old are you?
Greg Wible: 43...but most days I feel about 28!
Amiga-News: When and where was MeterNet founded?
Greg Wible: Founded in May, 1996 with registered office in Reno, Nevada and sales office in Long Beach, California (near Los Angeles). More company info found at http://meternet.com/mtabout2.htm.
Amiga-News: Your position at MeterNet?
Greg Wible: Founder and President.
Amiga-News: How many employees are working for MeterNet and in which department the most?
Greg Wible: A total worldwide team of 12, evenly divided in sales/admin & development. We also use contract programmers from US and abroad.
Amiga-News: This seems not to be much. How large is the army of contract programmers?
Greg Wible: We are a small company. at any time we use from 0 to 6 contract programmers.
Amiga-News: Is MeterNet a public company?
Greg Wible: Currently private, although in the last two weeks we have received an offer sheet from a public company to acquire MeterNet. If/when this acquisition happens, we will make official news release.
Amiga-News: Can you tell us about investors?
Greg Wible: These are private citizens.
Amiga-News: You just introduced the "SimpleBox wb7500" with "EnReachTV2". What is this EnReachTV2?
Greg Wible: We use the SimpleBox brand throughout our product line covering both entry level and mid-class devices: wb6400, wb7500 and wb8600. Specs for the entire line are found at http://info.simplebox.com. Our MeterNet "mid-class' SimpleBox wb8600 series will be powered by AmigaDE on an x86 platform designed for broadband connection. Our 'entry level' SimpleBox wb6400 series have been shipping since 1999. Its a basic browser device using analog modem on a PA-RISC processor platform from Winbond and a tailored browser SDK from Access in Japan. We are extending our entry level category with the new wb7500 series which is powered by a tailored version of the TV2 browser from Enreach running on a Luxsonor RISC platform with soft modem. Enreach is a Chinese company that has long experience in VCD and is also working hard to promote PVR technology for their next generation TV4. But we are using their proven TV2 solution for the 'entry level' segment. We have no current plans for PVR or other 'bleeding edge' features.
Amiga-News: Do you focus an using AmigaDE in the next future for the SimpleBox?
Greg Wible: Absolutely! Initially in the wb8600 series, plus on a new Internet Radio device slated to be released in late 2001. Bill, Randy, Fleecy, Dean and the entire Amiga team are very long term alliance partners that are crucial for the continued growth of MeterNet. We anticipate mutual success utilizing AmigaDE in our SimpleBox devices.
Amiga-News: When can we expect the SimpleBox with AmigaDE to hit the market and what is the business plan for the SimpleBox?
Greg Wible: Our overall plan is to always offer a series of devices to our US vertical and export markets. We hope to begin shipments of wb8616 in US market by late February, but this depends our DSL partners and on the v1.0 software being ready. In the US we will ship the wb8616 bundled with DSL service as part of the offering. However, our current DSL partner just announced a major reorganization and have pushed back our timeline. We are still studying the best bundle and channel strategy to market in Germany, Europe and other export markets. When we do we ship, all wb8600 series will ship with online update capability, so as the AmigaDE solution continues its development progress we will offer the ability to upgrade to latest version.
Amiga-News: So the consumer only can get the SimpleBox in a bundle with provider? Or can the Set-top box be available without a provider chosen to connect through a self chosen one to the internet?
Greg Wible: In US, it will only be bundled with one provider and user cannot change (like a mobile telephone). As mentioned, we are still studying best strategy for outside US.
Amiga-News: Do you know about the existing Amiga community?
Greg Wible: We continue to learn more and more about the worldwide Amiga community, which is really quite amazing and unique.
Amiga-News: Why do you think the Amiga community is amazing and unique?
Greg Wible: Active/durable/committed/some borderline raging fanatics... and much larger than we ever imagined--especially in Germany & Europe.
Amiga-News: Do you need the Amiga community? If yes, which part of the community is important?
Greg Wible: We recognize that a portion, but not all, of the Amiga user community will be interested in our wb8600 series bundled with broadband service. But we are also targeting other market segments who, while possibly familiar with the Amiga brand and long history, are not active Amiga users. Long term, we expect to offer external hard drive / CD-ROM drive via USB for wb8616 that will come preloaded with some of the rich Amiga content including apps and games. SMSEngineerMUI has been available in version 1.1beta for about a week.
This version contains the beta tester keyfile which enables the full
functionality and the use of the beta version.
We're also looking for someone who maybe has created own SMS-Gateways
(gateway.dat) and could send us these preferences. The requirement is that
it must work. Servers that set cookies don't work with SMSEngineerMUI.

Amiga Becomes Handheld PC
On video text page 632 of German TV station RTL2 there's the following news today:
«On the CeBIT the "Smart-Boy®", a new miniature PC in handheld format,
will be presented which is equipped with a touch-screen display, chip- and
credit card reader. A consumer device is supposed to follow this autumn which
will be distributed under the label "Amiga(TM)". In the eighties, the Amiga
was the first fully multimedia capable computer for the mass market.»
Manufacturer is the company Thendic Electronic Components GmbH
from Aschaffenburg, Germany.

PureBasic Version 2.00
Version 2.0 0f the compiler PureBasic has been released. It was completely re-written
and now is 4 to 7 times faster than before. For registered users there is an update
and a demo version for non-registered users available. The website has moved and now

About the compiler:
- Completely rewritten !
- Now, it's 4 to 7 times faster to compile
- Faster procedure handling
- Multi-dimensioned arrays are now supported
- Residents are now saved/loaded in one file

About the PureLibraries:
- Rewritten the Sprite library (50% faster) and added several

- Added 'DisableDebugger' and 'EnableDebugger' to disable the
debugger for some part within a program.
- Added the debugger support for Sprite, Joypad, Chunky and

About the editor:

Today QNX Software Systems released an new QNX® distribution.
This one contains Version 6 of QNY RTOS with new Neutrino® 2.11 mikrokernel, as
well as Photon® 2.0 mircoGUI. Newly added was SCSI support, a packet manager allowing
to update the integrated browser VoyagerTM. The new distribution offers enhanced support for

Dave Johnson from Planet IT did an interview
with Bill McEwen, President and CEO at Amiga Inc. on
January 8th, 2001.
Here a small extract from the six-pages interview:
Q: It sounds like you have plans to do a lot of things. Where are you concentrating your effort?
A: In the home. Homes need set-tops, desktop computers, handhelds and cell phones.
Motorola even has a cell phone running the Amiga OS, by the way. The home is our target,
and I think you'll see us first in set-top boxes. We also have some reference designs for
some amazing desktops that we think will blow people away. We won't build hardware ourselves,
but we have reference designs for others to build.
Q: So there could be new Amiga hardware coming out. Will there also be shrink-wrapped
Amiga OS packages to run on Windows?
A: Yes, there will be, but I'm not sure what the timing will be. We're still finishing
up some of the last components, like the 3D renderers. That will all be finished up in
the next new months. Already, we can run very cool 3D animation on a Cassiopeia, and it
is very smooth.

the Linux distribution by Red Hat and apparently is spreading quite quickly.
It's activities stood out by augmented scans on Remote Procedure Call Services (RPC).
The worm utilizes two security gaps known long before inside of
FTP-Server wuftpd
and the program rpc.statd, which obviously still not have been remove from

- Since child windows seem to be patented, Stefan Berger has removed
the support for them again. :-( If someone knows whether this
technology can be used freely, we'd like to know :-)
- Georg Steger has written an ASL Font Requester
- Johan Alfredsson has implemented and improved C:Run, C:NewShell,
C:List, C:Dir, DisplayBeep() and some more.
- Adam Chodorowski has improved our Workbench and began to port
a TCP/IP stack to AROS (ping compiles but there is no code
for the stack, yet).
- Michael Schulz has begun to work on a new AROS i386/Native core
which can load the large AROS kernel. AROS needs GRUB to boot,
now.
- Flavio Stanchina has improved lots of header and build files.

Vulcan Software Alive
After a long period of abstinence there are some news from Vulcan Software. We remember: An English producer
and developer of moderate Amiga games.
The "Valhalla" series, which was not very successful for the Amiga already, will be continued for the PC.
For the Amiga this game could at least convince by its few spoken sentences, but the first screenshots
of PC-Valhalla makes suspecting a product PC users might gladly leave un-converted.

New Version of sKulpt Released
sKulpt is the successor of the legendary 3D software 'Sculpt Animate 3D/4D' of Eric Graham and Byte By Byte.
Some years ago the raytracing program has a lot of friends because it was simple, cheap and effective.
It was made many pictures with this program of amateurs as well as of professional.

I guess it'll have to be all or nothing. If only 5 people volunteer, I think
I'll scratch this hosting idea. As you may have traffic limits on your
accounts I can inform you that The Commodore Billboard has between 30-40
visitors aday. This will of course be higher for a short while, when the
news about the 17 tv-ads reaches the Commodore news sites. But then again,
not all 40 will download 5 MB video clips. And with the audio previews
available, maybe people will be more selective and not just download the
whole lot. This might help decrease traffic. By the way, you have to provide
webspace on fairly decent servers. I wouldn't want people to download the
video clips with a speed of 0.2 KB/sec. ;-))»
Any help in solving the hosting problem is much appreciated.

Jan Andersen from Virus-Help Denmark was often asked if he was able to provide
the website of Virus-Help in German and French language, too. Peter Schmidt called his
attention to the possibility to make use of "Translator.go".
So, now via Translator.go the website can be translated by request to German, French, Spanish,
Italian, and Portugese. Andersen is aware of this not to be the best choice, but
better than nothing at all. Base language of the website is still English.

A new version of the reference software in case of video cards and digital cameras on the AMIGA, VHI Studio 5.4,
has been released. The update is free for owners of VHI Studio 5.x. Since v5.2 there are the following
changes:

- Driver for Sony MSAC-SR1 compatible reading devices (optional)
- Save series of pictures directly from camera to HD

AmigaOS Change-Logs Release Campaign
Matt Sealey started a petition to find out how big the common interest
in the publishing of change-logs since AmigaOS 3.1 really is.
The change-logs contain changes and add-ons compared to the previous
versions of the AmigaOS. This could be helpful for the development of new software.
The logs for AmigaOS V2.0 up to V3.1 are available on every Developer CD.
According to Matt Sealey Haage & Partner declined publishing their changes on the Developer CD V2.1.

AAA Award Canceled For The Time Being
Since 1997 the AAA Awards were given to people out of the Amiga area, among
other things for their hard- and software products. Among the award winners
have been Holger Kruse, Dave Haynie, Marcel Beck, Kermit Woodall, Stefan
Burstroem and SoftLogik. Now the awarding of this price will be canceled for the
time being. The reasons for this are too little manpower and too low support. In
the future the award may be granted again. This depends among other things on
the community and Amiga. Everybody who wants to comment on this may write
to f98-msa@f.kth.se.

Second SimpleMail Alpha Released
On January 14th, 2001 Hynek Schlawack and Sebastian Bauer have released the
second alpha version of the email client 'SimpleMail'.
Compared to the previous version the following has changed:
- New: image buttons.
- New: showing of HTML mails (using internal routines lent from SimpleHTML).
- New: mails with different mode possible.
- New: showing of mail threads.
- New: index files for folder.
- Change: better address book.
SimpleMail can be found under

There are also screenshots of the software on this site.
The authors hope for this second version receiving a little bit more feedback as they got for
the first one and point out that the alpha state refers to functionality, but by
no means to stability.

New Multi-Functional Chip
An interesting multi-functional chip was presented by people out of the
Commodore/Amiga area at the CES. The company Embedded Wireless Devices (EWD)
offers with the "Valhalla E8000" a chip that is capable of transferring several
wireless communications protocols like Bluetooth, 802.11 (wireless LAN) or Home RF
simultaneous. Panasonic will apply the chip in future products.

WAV datatype v41.6
On January 14th, 2001 Stephan Rupprecht has released version 41.6 of the
WAV datatype. With this datatype you can play sound files encoded in WAV
format.
In this version defective samples shouldn't cause the RIFF parser to run

Ultra Violent Worlds released
Some time ago Crystal Interactive
has announced to offer Amiga games on dual format CD-ROMs, that would contain a
version for another computer system along with the version for the Amiga. Now, with
Ultra Violent Worlds the first game of this kind has been released for the Amiga
and IBM PC compatibles.
Ultra Violent Worlds is a 2D-Shooter with vertical parallax scrolling on three
levels, background animations in arcade quality, impressive explosions and
atmospheric sound FX inclusive a matching soundtrack. Next to the 1 player mode
there's the possibility to play with two people on one split screen at the same time.
The game was developed by the Australian company Vorlan Software. The
Amiga version was already released in 1998 and contained several bugs at that
time. These were fixed in this re-release.
The Amiga version runs on any Amiga with AGA, 2MB Chip-RAM and 2MB Fast-RAM.
The PC version runs on Windows 95/98 with 8MB of free RAM.

AmigaOS 3.9 Wallpapers (Background Images)
Hello Amigans, as there's the huge amount of 4 new background images on the
AmigaOS 3.9 CD since AmigaOS3.5 I have decided to do some myself. The first
archive is already available on Aminet under pix/back/os39wallp.lha (1024x800
24Bit). A 800x600 version was just transferred onto Aminet. The 800x600 version
is named OS39w800.lha
Both archives are freeware and I allow Haage&Partner to use these.
