Hyperion comment on their dispute with Amiga Inc
Press release:
Leuven, Belgium - May 1, 2007.

Whilst it is not Hyperion Entertainment's policy to comment on ongoing litigation, we would like to reassure our customers (whom we wish to thank for their very numerous notes of support following the news) that development of AmigaOS 4.0 related components is still ongoing and will continue apace during the duration of the litigation with Amiga Inc.

Following over 18 months of unproductive negotiations with Amiga Inc. through our management and attorneys, we welcome the opportunity to finally present our case in a court of law which was regrettably the only remaining avenue after Amiga Inc. repeatedly and consistently stonewalled any attempt to resolve the outstanding issues (including the "Party Pack" and "I am Amiga Club" voucher schemes and the failure to acknowledge the intellectual property rights of third party developers) through mediation and binding arbitration.

Despite the failure of Amiga Inc. to secure access to the Amiga OS 3.5 and 3.9 source-code and indeed the reworked Amiga 3.1 source-code, Hyperion Entertainment has, in the form of Amiga OS 4.0, delivered a product which meets and surpasses all contractual design and development goals (e.g. full Amiga chipset independence), a fact which was previously acknowledged contractually and publicly by Amiga Inc. Under the 2001 agreement with Amiga Inc. Hyperion is entitled to all revenues stemming from distribution of Amiga OS 4.0 irrespective of the execution of the "buy in" clause which relates solely to subsequent versions (Amiga OS 4.1 and beyond).

We will therefore vigorously defend the claim which we consider entirely devoid of substance and we are extremely confident of a favorable outcome.

In closing, we would like to remind dealers and other third parties that distribution of Amiga OS 4.0 without the prior permission of Hyperion VOF and certain third party developers is illegal under EU, US and international copyright legislation and therefore entirely at their own risk. AROS: Renaming project
According to Aaron Digulla, initiator of the open source code operating system AROS, the name "Amiga" will be deleted from the project name because of the legal steps of Amiga Inc. against Hyperion.

Because of these reasons the project simply is called "AROS", "AROS Research Operating System" or "AROS Research OS". Of course you can call the project just like you want but in eMails, articles and on websites it should be called "AROS - The AROS Research Operating System". (snx) (Translation: dr)

AROS for AmigaOS: Updates to icon.library and picture.datatype for AfA
Bernd Roesch has released updates to icon.library as well as to picture.datatype for his AmigaOS port of AROS components, "AROS for AmigaOS" (AfA).

With these, it is now possible to employ the Workbench plugin Eastern for generating thumbnail icons under AfA as well (reported by amiga-news.de).

To this end, the icon.library now supports "globalidentify hook," which is required by Eastern as well as by DefIcons. Additionally, the version was changed to V51 and AmigaOS 4 compatibility for reading and writing 24 bit icon data was added.

Version 1.5 of Eastern is required, in addition, when using cache, the Raw option must be set.

The new picture.datatype now supports scaling in the function DT_Readpixelarray, which is also required by Eastern. Also, more 8 bit ILBM images are displayed correctly on a "classic" Amiga with Picasso 96 or CyberGraphX.

Moreover, in 32 and 24 bit images on 16 bit screens, a dithering takes place, so that color gradients as in the original picture.datatype are not visible. In this regard, the author Thilo Köhler thanks for the source code.

The update is rounded off with an extension to the FAQ collection for Eastern and the picture.datatype under CyberGraphX on Amiga computers.

Thumbnail Icons: Eastern 1.5
Stephan Rupprecht's Eastern is a Workbench plugin that automatically displays a thumbnail preview instead of the default icon for images that do not have their own icon. The latest changes:
  • v1.5: added RAW/S option to speed up loading of cached icons
  • v1.4: no longer needs progressive mode for the cache, added WAITUPDATE option
  • v1.3: in 1.2 the cache was limited to Workbench, now all apps are cached. The 68k build of Eastern assumes an OS4 compatible icon.library when the version number of the library is v51 or higher. In this case truecolor icons will be created. internal release

Eastern is available for AmigaOS 3 and 4. (cg) (Translation: cad)
