MorphOS: Discord channel freely accessible / Exchange with IRC server
Since mid-May, the instant messaging provider Discord (Wikipedia) does also have a MorphOS server. After initially requiring an invitation to participate, access is now possible directly.
As Frank 'cyfm' Mariak explains at the title link, it is also possible to communicate in languages other than English in the "MorphOS Babylon" area. In addition, some channels are also mirrored to the IRC server on libera.chat so that you can also participate in them via IRC. Accordingly, the official MorphOS IRC channel is linked to its Discord counterpart as well.
The following Discord-IRC links exist:
- MorphOS general -> #morphos
- MorphOS hardware -> #morphos-hardware
- MorphOS faq -> #morphos-faq
- MorphOS help -> #morphos-help
- MorphOS Software main-pool -> #morphos-software
- MorphOS Software games -> #morphos-games

WHDLoad: Reinhold Kloth passed away
Reinhold 'Stingray' Kloth passed away already in November, shortly after his 50th birthday, as has only now become known. In addition to many demoscene productions as part of his membership in groups such as Scoopex, Scarab and Desire, he was also one of the most eager contributors to the WHDLOad project: 847 installations were created by him alone, and he was involved in 247 more.
Scoopex is planning a demo production in his memory and invites those who knew him to contribute a short text message at the title link. (snx)

RTG driver: Preferences editor "P96Prefs" 47.21 for P96
With "P96Prefs" Thomas Richter has written an improved, alternative preferences editor for the RTG driver P96. AmigaOS 3.2 or newer is required. Since our last report on P96Prefs almost two years ago, numerous updates have been made, including support for environment variables, Matrox and Radeon card drivers, and PCI-based S3ViRGE graphics cards.
The following changes have been made in the last two years and are included in the current version 47.21:
- 47.21: Added support for the Matrox and Radeon card driver. Fixed handling of ALT+Cursor key combination in the mode edit window, adjusting the blank borders around the frame.
- 47.20: Added support for new environment variables appearing in P96 3.6.0.
- 47.19: Added support for the tool types of the Matrox P96 video driver.
- 47.18: The "Interlace" gadget in the mode GUI is now disabled for boards that do not support interlace.
- 47.17: P96Prefs is now aware of S3ViRGE based PCI cards and the latest S3ViRGE driver. If all modes of a resolution are enabled, and the resolution is enabled, then it also enables those modes that could be verified. P96Prefs now also supports Matrox drivers, though possibly not yet all tooltypes the driver offers.
- 47.16: P96Prefs is now aware of the Voodoo card and the latest Voodoo driver on Aminet.
- 47.15.1: The P96Prefs binary is unchanged, but this release contains an updated Italian catalog by Samir and an updated Spanish catalog by Javier. Thanks folks!
- 47.15: This release adds support for the new VA2000 driver and recognizes its tool types and some card pecularities.
- 47.14: P96Prefs re-evaluates now the double scan and interlace flags from the board driver, and thus cooperates nicer with the A2410 driver which turns off the double scan it does not support.
- 47.13: Only very minor changes have been made in this release, this version is now more verbose in case it cannot open its window and prints error messages if opening the window fails. Note that P96Prefs is designed for classical Amiga Systems, it will not work on PPC systems.
- 47.12.1: The binaries remained unchanged, just catalogs had been updated. Thanks again to Samir and Javier!
- 47.12: P96Prefs now requests a reboot in case a board assignment changed implicitly because an installed board was assigned to an already existing preferences setting. P96Prefs now also loads the monitor dimensions from the EDID data and fills them in. Setting the knob position of numerical tool types was not always set to scale correctly.
- 47.11: In case a board is ghosted, P96Prefs now prints a reason under the (assumed) board name, either providing information that the board driver is not loaded, the monitor icon was not found, or the settings are not assigned to a board.
- 47.10: One GUI glitch in the German translation was fixed where one string in the control panel for numerical elements was taking too much space.

Amiga Games That Weren't: Viking by New Deal Productions
A new article on Games That Weren't is dedicated to the game "Viking", an ambitious but never released project by New Deal Productions for Amiga and Atari ST from 1990.
Instead of a linear story, players would take on the role of Viking heroes such as Erik, Leif or Thorwald, setting out to discover the world with their ship and crew and creating their own quests. The plan was to create a huge geographical setting with 13 seas, 72 rivers and over 200 cities – including trade, sea battles, sieges of historic cities and magical tasks. The graphics and scope seemed extremely promising at the time. Why development was discontinued and the game never released remains unknown. (nba)

Worth a read: The creation of Boulder Dash
A new article on Spillhistorie tells the story of how the legendary game Boulder Dash was created. In an interview with Canadian developer Peter Liepa, one of the game's co-developers, we learn about the background to the game – from Liepa's early experiences with computers to his groundbreaking approaches to level design.
The original Boulder Dash was developed in 1984 by Peter Liepa and Chris Gray for 8-bit Ataris, followed by conversions for the Amiga, Commodore 64 and many other platforms. In early 2025, the anniversary edition Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary was released for modern gaming platforms.
The article shows that the combination of a clever puzzle idea, fast-paced gameplay and user-friendly design contributed significantly to its worldwide success. (nba)

Amiga emulator for the Web: vAmigaWeb 4.2.1
vAmigaWeb is an Amiga emulator for web browsers or as a progressive web app. The new version is now based on the core of vAmiga 4.2. In addition, file exchange between Amiga and host computer is now only possible via ZIP archive. In principle, you no longer need HDF files, as file exchange via ZIP archive is much easier and you don't need any extra tools to read HDF files. (dr)

Hardware analysis: boards.library 3.122
The boards.library decodes manufacturer IDs and product IDs of Amiga computers and shows what is installed in the Amiga and by whom. It is used, for example, by tools such as WhichAmiga and ReportPlus or AmigaOS' own ShowConfig (V46+).
Starting with version 3.120 the boards.library now checks the identify.library V45.0 and higher (amiga-news.de reported) for unknown boards and vice versa. Thus both libraries should be installed. (dr) (Translation: dr)

Youtuber claims to have received an offer to buy the Commodore brand
Years ago, Sean Donohue acquired the rights to the x86-based Commodore 64x nostalgia computer from the bankruptcy estate of Commodore USA and attempted a Kickstarter-funded remake with his British company My Retro Computer Ltd., which was founded specifically for this purpose. Due to the allegedly very high licence fees, the computer was initially sold without a Commodore licence as "My 64".
The YouTube channel "Retro Recipes" presented this new edition to a wider audience six months ago in a very euphoric video. According to the channel itself, this video, which has since been viewed more than a million times, led to an agreement between the current owner of the Commodore brand and My Retro Computer Ltd: The latter now genuinely offers its keyboard computer as the "Commodore 64x", a statement from Commodore Corporation B.V. published on the website is said to confirm the proper licensing of the brand.
Now "Retro Recipes" is speaking out again via video: spurred on by the success of the C64x coverage, he has developed the plan to acquire a kind of swarm-financed "general licence" from Commodore Corporation in order to be able to distribute all possible existing and future products with a Commodore logo. For a company to be founded specifically for this purpose, he himself was to be the managing director and Sean Donohue the head of operations. Leo Nigro, who had already fulfilled this role at Commodore USA and was currently responsible for updating the Linux distribution Commodore OS Vision, which was created at the time, would be the technical director.
The video ends with a real cliffhanger: Perifractic from Retro Recipes claims that the reply from the Commodore Corporation does not simply offer him a far-reaching licence, but proposes the sale of the entire company to the YouTube entrepreneur and his partners. However, he only wants to explain further details in a later video, part 1 of the series "Can We Save Commodore?" ends at exactly this point.
Editor's note: Commodore Corporation B.V. only owns the rights to the "Commodore" brand and the well-known "Chickenhead" logo. Software rights such as firmware ROMs or AmigaOS are owned by the Italian Mike Battilana or his Amiga Corporation, the same applies to various brands from the Amiga sector. Rumours that the Commodore Corporation would like to get rid of the trademark rights have been circulating for some time. (cg) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOS 4: Text editor DumbPad 0.3
Roman 'kas1e' Kargin wanted to create a simple and stable text editor with "DumbPad". It is his first Reaction-based project, version 0.3 already supports tabs and notifications uses AISS for menu and button graphics. The project "definitely has bugs" but already runs quite stably. The developer would be grateful for tests of the editor on other systems.
The following features have already been implemented:
- AISS for toolbar and RMB menu
- Features : New, Open, Save, SaveAs, Cut, Copy, Paste, Undo, Redo, Search, SelectAll, Delete
- Drag-and-drop support for opening files.
- Complex logic to handle application exit with unsaved data (for single and multiple tabs).
- Command-line argument support for opening files.
- Iconification support for Workbench.
- ARGB bitmap support for internal clicktab images.
- AmigaOS versioning support.
- Support for opening empty files.
- Warning requester when a file is in use by another application during saving.
- Skipped NULL bytes to enable opening binary files.
- Pop-up menu with Close/Iconify/Snapshot/Jump to Screen functionality
- Status bar at bottom, using button.gadget, shows line and column numbers.
- Advanced Find/FindNext Functionality: Supports input interrupts for additional keys and aligns with the logic of modern editors. For example, while the editor is active, pressing F3 triggers FindNext, seamlessly searching the entire file without interruption. Additionally, if text is found, reopening he search window recalls the last search term.
- If the user tries to paste with an empty clipboard, we trigger IIntuition->DisplayBeep() for feedback.
- Font selection: Prioritizes a monospaced (fixed) font from the "Prefs:Font/System Default". If unavailable or proportional, falls back to the one from "Prefs:Font/Screen Font". If both are unavailable, defaults to the goold old Topaz/10.
Once DumbPad has reached a certain level of maturity, the source code will be released. (cg)
