MorphOS: native versions of MPEG de-/encoders for Wildfire7
"wf_mpeg2decode" and "wf_mpeg2encode" are the MorphOS versions of the free MPEG video loaders and savers that are part of the Wildfire7 distribution.

The two files have to be copied into the directory "system/tools/" in the Wildfire7 main directory. The already existing files have to be replaced with the new ones - the author recommends to create a backup of the old versions first in case problems with the new version should arise.

It cannot be guaranteed that the programs run on all systems, the modules have been tested on a Pegasos 1 G3@600mhz.

Saving of a test animation as MPEG file with the 68k mpegsaver needs 1 minute and 42 seconds (with JIT) while the PPC native version takes 16 seconds.

If there are any questions please contact Andreas Küssner via e-mail. Our thanks go to Oliver Hummel for compiling and doing various tests. (cg) (Translation: wk)

Tales of Tamar: Not enough prospects for "The Great War of Anarrow"
Dear Amiga community, unfortunately there are not enough prospects for our free action "The great war of Anarrow" (14 at all, 11 Mosianer and 3 Hombres). Therefore the war will not take place.

But we give a last space of time of one week. If there should be more than 50 persons on each side the war will take place.

We want to invite all interested players to use the shareware option and to play the game for a while for free.

Greetings,
Wolfen & the ToT-Team (snx) (Translation: dr)

Status report: "Die Kleine Gilde II" & SN-archives
Since the last version of the realtime strategy simulation called "Die Kleine Gilde II" there have been some changes.

For details please have a look at the developer-diary. The new version of Die Kleine Gilde II is in beta test and will be published in one or two weeks. If you have suggestions, bug reports, registrations or simply some feedback you can contact this special e-mail-address.

News from the SN-archives:

Since November the account management called "SN-KontoArchiv II" is in development. The input of account data has already finished. Currently the input and output statistics are added. SN-KontoArchiv II is the successor of SN-KontoArchiv I and ist not compatible to the previous version because all source code of this version has vanished. SN-KontoArchiv will be part of "SN-Archiv-Paket". Those ones who have already registered can also use SN-KontoArchiv II without any restrictions

Status of SN-EuroArchiv II:

SN-EuroArchiv 1.9 is also in work. The entry list can be now adapted with up to 17 columns. The HTML-support for KMS and special coins was also improved. Now it is possible to determine the colour of special coins in KMS (KMS-HTML-site) or to determine the special coin from the KMS (special coin-HTML-site).

Just like above: Send suggestions, bug reports, registrations or other feedback to this e-mail-address. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Database: MUIbase V1.9
Today version 1.9 of the Amiga-database MUIbase was published. News and improvements in this version:
  • New program functions: DAY, MONTH, YEAR, DATEDMY, MONTHDAYS, YEARDAYS, ADDMONTH, ADDYEAR, APPLY
  • Improvements for TRIMSTR and REPLACESTR
  • New start functions when double clicking in virtual lists
  • Internal optimations which speeds up Lisp-code
  • Better support for Amiga OS4
  • Option for external program sources

Besides this there is now a MUIbase "light" version which does not have all the functions of MUIbase. Structure editor, program editor and ARexx-port are missing. MUIbase light can be freely copied and is available for i386 Linux and Windows. A GTK V2.4 installation is required. In future MUIbase light will be completed to a full version.

For discussions and feedback concerning MUIbase there is a mailing list. (cg) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOS 4: Movie-Player "Mplayer" Preview 4 (Update)
Under the title-link you'll find a new beta version of OS 4 port of Mplayer (screenshot). The most important changes in comparison to the last release:
  • Speed raised about 25-30 %
  • New video and audio drivers (vo sdl, ao sdl, vo jpg, vo png). Full-screen display is possible without any problems using the SDL drivers (change to it from window mode and back with "f"). Because of missing hardware support the full-screen mode is still relatively slow. The JPEG and PNG drivers convert a video to a series of single pictures
  • Streaming video/audio is supported (untested)
  • Support for "playlists"
  • Support for more codecs

Known problems:
  • The SDL drivers fails to start when there is no corresponding resolution available

Tales of Tamar: New Amiga Version 0.53-R2
Beloved Amiga Community, the time has finally come that we release a new Amiga version. Only now, finally, has it become ready, and we're now going to demonstrate our unbroken Amiga loyalty.

Perhaps we can also tempt you to participate in this unique roleplaying game. With the action of the "Great War of Anarrow" we gives you the possibility of participating in this game and its special community. It is of no import to us which computers you use. It's all the same whether you choose Pegasos, AmigaOne, UAE, Amithlon, Classic Amiga, PC or Mac. They all have the possibility of participating at least in the shareware version. Become acquainted with nice humans and to increase your circle of friends.

Further, we'd like to notify you that Amiga dealers already offer Tales of Tamar at reasonable prices. It's been available on eBay for about a year for 9.90 euros (approx. 14 dollars -DM) and at Vesalia the remaining stock is 39.90 euros (approx 65 dollars -DM). As soon as this remaining stock is gone however, the price will rise.

[long, long list of new features and much other article text not translated -DM]

We wish you a lot of fun with the new version, and remind you to first make a backup, before you install the new version, you never know what could happen!

MorphOS: Developer Utility ChocolateCastle Released
With ChocolateCastle V0.1 Grzegorz 'Krashan' Kraszewski has released a tool that helps programmers to assemble BOOPSI and MUI classes (screenshot).

ChocolateCastle provides systems for such classes on the basis of the developer's defaults. You can indicate the name of the class, the superclass, the generating method (including the respective dispatcher entry) and the message structure that is used. The program produces compiler-ready source code as framework for the programmer to further fill out.

Extension of ChocolateCastle's functionality is planned for future versions by the incorporation of shared LIBRARIES, external Boopsi and MUI classes, as well as complete MUI applications further in the future. Comments, suggestions, feature requests and bug reports are welcomed by the author.

Update of xml2.library to Version 4.0
Newly-available Version 4.0 of xml2.library allows the reading, processing, and writing of XML and HTML data.

The DTD support contains the analysis and validation of even complex DTDs, either during the parser entry or later after the modification of the document. The output is achieved in a simple SAX stream or a DOM-resembling representation in memory. In the latter case the built-in XPath and XPointer implementations are used in order to select subnodes or ranges. A flexible input/output mechanism is available with existing HTTP and FTP modules combined in a URI library.

  • Rewritten sound routines: now the emulator is running at the correct speed (68060 CPU with fast RAM)
  • Fixed .Z80 loader: before, uncompressed blocks having a length of #FFFF have been unpacked incorrectly
  • Some bugfixes regarding the emulation of ZX-Spectrum 128k timings
  • Added loading .SLT files as .Z80 files (no full support of SLT format)
  • Added support for AY-chips in hardware (thanks to Lord Vader for consultation and betatest); the scheme for attaching a real AY chip to the Amiga can be found on Aminet in the archive mhm-mAYhem.lha

EvenMore: Textviewer now with datatype support
A new Datatypes plugin is available, allowing EvenMore to load any text document supported by datatypes (e.g. via DocDatatypes, etc). The executable and Generic plugin have been modified to allow this Datatype plugin to work.

EvenMore plugins take precedence over the Datatypes. If you have a document that you prefer opened via a datatype rather than through an EvenMore plugin, simply delete the EvenMore plugin (not forgetting to flush the memory), and reload the file.

I have also fixed a major problem with the language catalogs. Unfortunately I had deleted some unused strings in the executable, and this meant some strings appeared in the wrong place. Make sure you download the new executable and the EasyGUI Prefs plugin to fix this. Thanks!

The new versions of EvenMore and its extensions can be downloaded under the title link in the Download and the Plugins area, respectively. (snx)

Amiga Java: status report about JAmiga project
Under the title link you can find a short status report about the Java implementation "Jamiga". Version 0.0.5 will soon be available, interested developers can already download the "daily snapshots" and compile these.

The source codes are prepared for being compiled under AmigaOS 3 and MorphOS. Whether this can be done under AmigaOS 4 is unknown, the developers ask for feedback about this.

The new version implements now for the first time the "JNI" interface. This makes it for external developers possible to create Java native libraries that are built like the shared libraries known from the AmigaOS. (cg) (Translation: wk)

individual Computers: New software

Catweasel MK4 with Linux drivers

Michael Krause has adapted his cwfloppy driver for Linux to the Catweasel MK4. The new driver is only available for Kernel version 2.6, and can currently only read disks. Get more information on the author's homepage.

MMC64 plugins available

The flashcard-based mass storage device for the C64 computer supports a plugin system that handles unknown filetypes with external programs. The first plugins support the seven picture formats Koala, Doodle, Advanced Art Studio, Interpaint, Hi-Eddi, Art Studio and Paint Magic.

Download: MMC64_PicturePlugins.zip (5 KByte)

Further, there's a player for a streaming.video format that's already supported by another mass storage unit for the C64:

PAL version:: MMC64_aniplgin10_PAL.zip (2 KByte)
NTSC version: MMC64_aniplgin10_NTSC.zip (2 KByte)

The BIOS of MMC64 has been improved a lot after the first bug reports. The new version 0.96 can be flashed by the user by simply placing the file in the SYSTEM64 directory of a flashcard. Should anything go wrong while flashing the unit with the browser, the same tool is available on a recovery disk.

BIOS: MMC64_V096.zip (7 KByte)
Recovery disk: MMC64_Recovery_096.zip (8 KByte)

Detailed documentation of MMC64 is now available in the support area of the website of individual Computers. Programmers can find information about the MMC64 registers, and a few code examples of how to read and write data from and to the flashcard in their own programs. A commented source code for a plugin will follow in a few days. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Genesi (e-mail)

Genesi: Request to developers for the Open Desktop Workstation
Under the title link, Genesi has published the following request to the developers who are working on software for the Pegasos-based Open Desktop Workstation. The company explicitely wants also MorphOS projects to be registered.

"Please read the latest Genesi Press Release and watch the new PegasosPPC/ODW presentation animation.

Most importantly, please update your PPCZone Project entries (if you received your ODW and somehow did not get an account yet please contact matt@genesi.co.uk).

Partners and potential partners are logging in to see the latest updates and entries.

With the advent of the initiative in China, Genesi will be seeking to support/develop additional national centers. Discussions involving a second facility in India and a third to support Central and South America are already underway. Your PPCZone Project entries are a meaningful way for you to present your developments to Genesi Partners and Customers. Please keep them updated!

The first round of Pilot Projects are drawing to successful conclusions. In the implementation phase of the various initiatives developer support on a full time and part time basis will be required. Having your PPCZone Project entry up to date indicating your availablity, resume and activity/projects will further your opportunity around the PegasosPPC and the ODW.

With the Avalanche Desktop Reference Project extending from Debian to soon also include Gentoo, OpenSolaris and a new MySQL Initiative, the announcement of the Freescale and China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII) National Linux Systems Development Lab, the soon-to-be officially confirmed Genesi/MIT Open Course Ware satellite Internet delivery pilot, ConnectEE, and finally the new Mobile MorphOS effort, the potential for PegasosPPC/ODW related consulting and employment opportunities are growing. Please get your PPCZone Project pages updated!

For information concerning your account or to establish an account please contact the webmaster. Thanks!" (snx)

Digital Almanac 3 (binary only)

Ilkka Lehtoranta compiled the recently made available source codes of the astronomy software "Digital Almanac 3" (DA3) for MorphOS. The archive contains only the executable file, to be able to use DA3 you still need the (commercial) full version.

Desktop Search 0.1.0

With MorphOS Desktop Search you can search the hard disks for valuable information and create an index for easier finding. In the data base you then can display found files, images, songs or e-mails by double clicking.

The new version does now support the data base SQLite so there's no need for a second computer anymore.

individual Computers: Big news-update

Catweasel MK4 now shipping

Shipping of the Catweasel MK4 has started exactly one month ago. We have now filled all back-orders and want to say thank you for the trust and the patience that our customers have shown. The new delay was caused by the transition to a lead-free production process. We have now solved all problems that arose with this transition, and are now perfectly prepared for the new laws that become effective in 2006.

MMC64 production finished

The same lead-free production process was used for the assembly of MMC64, the flashcard-based mass storage unit developed by Oliver Achten. Shipping of this product has started on Friday March 4th, 2005. We're now taking orders through our contact form, or through e-mail. The price per unit is 49,- EUR.

New Deathbed Vigil DVDs arrived

The film by Dave Haynie about the last days of Commodore experiences constant demand, so we have imported new DVDs. German customs have released the parcel on March 4th, 2005, so we can now ship the DVDs in the free market of the European Union. Due to the strong EUR currency, we were able to lower the price to 34.90 EUR each. The film is recorded on DVD-R media, and we have chosen the PAL version for the European market. Dave has not only signed the inlays, but also the discs this time, so collectors get two original autographs with every order!

New software for Catweasel MK4

Unfortunately, the Windows operating system kept some surprises for us that we could not account for during the beta test. Some customers could not even install the drivers, and others have reported errors with no obvious reasons. The new driver can be used for both the Catweasel MK3 and MK4, and it fixes all known problems.

Download: CWMK40107.zip (68 KByte)

The driver can be used with Windows 2000 and Windows XP (all versions). Please remove all elements of the old driver manually before installing (this is described in the readme file of the archive). Users of Windows 2000 should check if they need to install update 822831, otherwise the driver can still not be installed.

Catweasel MK4 drivers for classic Amiga are also available now: The new version of multidisk V3.65 uses OpenPCI to access the controller through the Prometheus PCI bridge. Other PCI bridges that are suppored by OpenPCI have not been tested, so we can't guarantee proper function.

Download: multidisk365.lha (40 KByte)

individual Computers at events

We're especially happy to announce that we're sponsoring the scene-event Breakpoint again this year. Breakpoint takes place at Easter, following the tradition of the famous Mekka&Symposium parties. A new location will be used this year, and it will break more records: We're especially looking forward to the biggest "bigscreen" that has ever been used on a demo-party, and the seminars that are introdced for the first time this year.

AmiTron 2005 will take place on April 2nd, 2005 in Trondheim, Norway. The main point of interest for this small show is Amiga computers ranging from the oldest A1000 to the brand new micro-A1, but due to popular request, we'll do demonstrations of our retro-computing products as well, such as using a Commodore 64 as a web-server. Strategy game: News from "Schlachtfeld"
There are some news of the strategy game called "Schlachtfeld":

Dennis "Psyria" Lohr has agreed to make available his Schlachtfeld title theme for Phase II as well and to write some other tracks for the game if it is necessary.

Besides this somebody has been found who creates a new background graphic for Schlachtfeld Phase II. You can find a preview under the title link. If you have suggestions for other background graphics please contact Horst Diebel via e-mail.

Those models which were designed by Edgar Leidig will probably not be used in Phase II. But the basic structures are kept and will be still improved so the units may be used in a Phase III.

During the next days there will be updates on the Schlachtfeld website. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
It's been a good month for the Amiga community, but one sad event
stands out in my mind. That is the death of long-time Amiga community
member and supporter John Zacharias. We first met John many years ago
at an old AmiExpo I believe it was, in Chicago. Royan and I enjoyed
visiting with him whenever we had the chance. Most recently, that was
at the last St. Louis Amiga show, now also many years ago. His loss is
a real one for the Amiga community but his legacy will live on, as
long as AmiWest continues to flourish. John was it's founder and
guiding star for many shows. He is gone, sadly, but his gift to the
Amiga lives on. As he does in our memories.
As you look through this issue, you will see stories in a large
number of categories. This is very encouraging. I've noticed that the
last few months there seems to be a slow but steady increase in the
amount of Amiga news to be found.
 That's good news in itself.
We hope you enjoy this issue.

 Editor

To compensate the fall out of us.aminet.net, a new Aminet main server
has been established which can be reached at www.aminet.net or
main.aminet.nett. Aminet now uses a completely new web interface
written Nicolas Mendoza, originally implemented for amirepo.net.

As most of the internal scripts aswell as the new web interface had
to be adapted or have been rewritten from scratch, there still might
be some rough edges, smaller bugs or dead links left - but Aminet is
working again and uploads are getting processed.

Please note that currently only the main server is working properly,
mirrors are not being updated yet and uploads at mirror sites are
ignored. This will be addressed later on - for now please stick to the
URLs given above to access Aminet. If you want to upload to Aminet,
use your favourite FTP client to connect to main.aminet.net and upload
to the "new" directory as outlined in Aminet's help files.

Urban Mueller, founder and main administrator of Aminet, is going to
retire as soon as the new infrastructure is in place. He will be
hosting the main server but will no longer be part of the
administration team. The exact details of Aminet's future
administration structure are not decided yet, but amiga-news.de is
currently assembling a new team that will be responsible for Aminet in
the future.

Volunteers wanted

We are searching for one or two volunteers that could assist us in
moderating uploads. An upload moderator should meet the following
requirements:

 - Basic knowledge about Unix shells (moving, deleting, renaming
files)

 - Broadband internet access

 - English speaker

If you fullfill these requirements and would like to become a part of
the new Aminet team, please contact us at team@amiga-news.de.

Eyetech, Amont Informatique (France) and RELEC Software & Hardware
Amiga (Switzerland) are delighted to announce that an agreement has
been reached with AMIGA CENTER (France), who is now an official
maintenance and repair centre for the AmigaOne.

This includes the hardware fixes for UDMA and USB on the XE
"Earlybird" systems. Read more for the full announcement.

AMIGA CENTER have long been known for their technical knowhow in
electronics, and most particularly for their competence with the
"Classic" Amigas. They are an excellent choice to carry out the same
work for the new AmigaOnes.

AmigaOne XE owners who decide to have this fix carried out can
therefore now contact AmigaCenter for an estimate. Please don't send
your motherboard without first contacting them!

Of course, it is possible to avoid implementing the hardware fix if
you use an IDE-UDMA PCI card based on the Silicon Image 0680 chip.
PCI-based USB adapters can also be used, a number having already been
tested with the XE by developers before and during the "Earlybird"
phase.

Amont Informatique, RELEC and Eyetech see this new partnership as
reinforcing the infrastructure that is progressively being set up
around the AmigaOne, which we feel is a worthy successor to the
"Classic" 68k amigas. It is particularly heartening to see someone of
the calibre of AmigaCenter, whom some of you may remember as Serele,
still active in the Amiga community.

Earlybird owners everywhere, we know that, like us, you are only too
aware of the amount of effort required to achieve a fully stable and
bug-free machine, with performance in line with customer expectations.
We are continually researching ways and means to achieve and improve
on our objectives. However, this requires spending a lot of time and
work. Most of you understood this from the very beginning, and we take
the opportunity here to thank everyone who has involved and helped out
in one way or another. Those who decided to participate in this
adventure are pioneers, whether you bought a full configuration or
just a motherboard, by buying hardware clearly labelled as "for
developers only", with all the advantages and - above all -
disadvantages this entails. In fact, we all owe you more than thanks,
we also owe you our profound respect !

{Be sure to read the update portion of this article also, to discover
the recent changes in this contest since the Feb. 14 announcement.
Brad}

This is a contest created to motivate developers to write new native
software for AmigaOS4. Also, we need the best of all software
(platform-wise). That is why there are rules you have to follow in
order to participate in this contest. They will ensure that you use
your imagination and coding skills to the maximum. I hope to bring
this contest back every year so that it outlines the Amigan's
endeavour to push the platform to the highest level. Who can
participate?

Any brave coder(s). If you can write some nice software, either alone
or with other developers, you can work for this contest. Note that
members of the OS4 team (developers) can't participate (they have
other stuff to do :-).

What are the prizes?

First prize: either a standalone motherboard or 700 Euros, +
Catweasel MK4 (link). It will be a motherboard from ACK Software
Controls or from Eyetech with 256MB of RAM (OS4 included). Whatever is
available and appropriate at the end of the contest. I dont know the
future but rest assured the winner will get a deserving prize.

The motherboard will be purchased from the Amiga dealer closest to
the winner(s). This should ensure delivery time is kept to a minimum
and so that they can offer you post sale support. Other hardware will
be delivered by the contributor himself. Note that these prizes may
grow when partners/contributors are found. What is this contest?

How should I proceed?

 * First find a good idea for a program. It should be either
completely new or one which is far better than any other program of
the same kind.

 * Write a feature list. Point out all the features of the proposed
project/application. If you want do some mock-ups to show how your GUI
will be. See the example project at the bottom for the kind of
information that's needed to enter.

 * Submit your project to us for validation. You'll receive shortly
there after either a green light which will allow you to start work or
your project will be rejected and the reasons will be given. Thus,
you'll be able to enhance it and submit it again.

 * When your project is accepted, you can start to code. A very brief
description of it will be displayed on this page. No details, just a
general idea of what your software will do. This is to avoid
duplicates as much as possible.

 * Then provide a demo of your program for the deadline.

Who will be the jury?

Myself (Elwood) and all partners of this contest:

All the people that give some money to help this project deserve the
right to give their input and opinions.

Contest rules.

 * Your project must be a utility piece of software of whatever kind
i.e. files utility, coding, music, graphics...
 But no game, no demo.

 * Your program must not be already available on OS4 (no demo or beta
released, nothing) at submition time.
So you may continue your work on an old OS3 program and bring it to
OS4 or port a GPL-like source code.

 * If your program is based on an OS3 program or an Open Source one,
you can't just recompile the software for OS4. Remember the goal of
this contest is to bring new stuff to Amiga OS. An OS3 program or one
available on other platforms is not new and is probably far from being
a state-of-the-art program in the pure Amiga style. I'm sure you know
what I mean. Then in these cases, do not just port the program. You'll
need to add a lot to it to be considered a new development.
This is also to be sure that the contest is fair. You can't compare a
simple port with software written from scratch.

 * The goal is to bring new "useful" software to Amiga OS4 so your
program must be really useful. E.g. no simple sound player or picture
viewer but an enhanced player/viewer would be accepted. This is a
subtle difference and it depends on everybody point of view of course
but your project will be considered based on the feature list you
provide.

 * A demo version must be available by the deadline.

 * We want all Amiga software to be the best so you have to code
something great to be accepted in this contest. Again, no simple
'seen-many-times' software. We don't need 'yet-another-simple'
utility. Use your imagination.

 * You must code under GCC (available in the OS4 SDK) or VBCC.

 * You must use Picasso96.

 * Use OS4-specific features (hooks, reaction classes, vitualised
memory...etc). It means you must use Reaction.

 * Use OS4 newlib runtime library

 * You must produce an OS4 binary using a cross-compiler available on
the OS4 SDK (soon publically available).

 * If there's only one participant by the deadline, the contest will
be canceled.

Partners wanted!

If you are a dealer and you want to advertise on this website and you
want to show the Amiga community that you are still a part of this
community, contribute to this contest. You can contribute by donating
some money (prefered) or by donating hardware. The money will be used
to make the prize even better (buying a case, a monitor etc...).

Deadline!

The deadline is: 1 Dec 2005.

By the deadline you'll have to provide a working demo of your
program. You can cripple your program if you want too (no save option,
limited actions etc...). To help with the judging process please
provide a demo that will run with the smallest effort possible on the
judges part. Further details will be given upon validation into the
contest.

FAQ

 * Are Eyetech, ACK Software Controls or Hyperion involved in this
contest?

No. This contest was created by an Amigan for Amigans.

 * What does "not already available on OS4" mean?

It means that it must not be available outside your current
development team (coders, betatesters). So if you've already released
your software to other people it is considered to be already usable by
users. So it can't be accepted in the contest. Remember that the goal
is to bring new developments.

 * Why Reaction? MUI is nice.

Yes it's nice but it belongs to a third party coder and an operating
system can't rely on it. It means that if one day, for one reason or
another, AmigaOS owners won't be able to use MUI anymore, your
software won't be usable anymore under OS4.

 * What does "not available at submision time" mean?

It means that you can't submit a project that is already running and
used by OS4 users. But you don't have to wait for the deadline to
release beta versions of your project. Since it has been accepted in
the contest you can release demos, screenshots or whatever. Doing so
you can attract new developers, betatesters.

 * I don't have OS4. How can I test my app?

First, if your app runs in 68k with no Enforcer hits, there is great
chance that it runs on OS4, it's a start. Then, you can make a public
call to ask help from OS4 owners to betatest for you, or even to code
with you. We are a community. Work together.

 * Why newlib and not clib2?

 1) newlib is more advanced. It has more functions that clib2.
 2) for the same reason why we have shared libraries since a loooong
time: functions shared between programs, low memory usage (and some
other minor reasons like smaller binaries).
This is one of the most famous Amiga feature, why reject it today?

 * Does any of the donations go to IntuitionBase.com?

No, all donations go into a pot for the prizes, at no point does
anyone from IntuitionBase have access to the funds for this contest.

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to email me.

UPDATE

27 Feb-2005 18:04:07 (197 reads)

Hello everyone,

First of all thanks for all your comments. They were all appreciated.
As a result of your concerns, a few things have been changed in the
contest. I hope you'll appreciate them and join.

First of all the prize has changed. Now you can choose to win either
the hardware or the same amount in cash. So if you don't have a µA1,
you can buy one and get refunded if you win the contest. But this
option is reserved to brave coders only! Also if you already have an
A1 you'll be interested by this second choice.

Also a Catweasel MK4 has been added to the prize. It is a
contribution from our first Amiga dealer contributor. Thanks Soft3 for
your support. I hope many will follow you.

Many thanks to Darren and Benjamin to support this adventure and a
special thank you to all Amiga.dk members, you are damn kewl!

I know there are people that are preparing to participate in this
contest. Maybe some of you are wondering what happens if you submit
your project and other people submit a better one. In this case, no
need to worry because you can update your project at any time. So if
you feel you need to make your project look better, no problem just
send me an email.

I would like to point out that your project can be made of several
programs so you can submit a porting project. You can then work on
several smaller utilities and submit the whole package.

Also note that if your program is GUI based you must use Reaction.
But obviously if your project is build around a port of a new GUI
toolkit to the Amiga platform, you can use it instead of Reaction.

Coders wonder why I created the "use newlib" rule. There are several
reasons behind it. As an example, clib2 can't be used to create a
thread aware program. Also newlib is a well supported project with
hundreds of developer working on it. This makes it a project that is
worth using instead of spending time working on an Amiga-only
solution. Enhancing clib2 would require time from Amiga developers
that could spend it creating new programs for the platform. This would
go against the idea behind this contest: creating new AmigaOS
software.

Also I would like to say that many Amiga developers don't feel sad
about this restriction. It's enough for me to think that I am right.

There are no more excuses start coding!

Thanks.

First a bit of background info on A.D.A (Amiga Demoscene Archive).
The site was started by two persons: Vanquish (graphics, design,
screenshot conversion,...) and z5 (content, html,...). We put the
first version online on 11 november 2001. The site was then in pure
html and featured some 120 pages

Shortly after the launch, Syn offered to lend his php skills to
convert the site to php+mysql. He actually did a lot of work on how
A.D.A. is now in terms of php and database. Later on, Syn left the
team and i (z5) took over the php/mysql side of things.

However, I have little time and never got around learning php inside
out. I know the basics but not enough to move the site forwards.

I feel that we have a good base/site to evolve with now. 441
productions, tons of screenshots, logos, demo list, parties,... We're
quite happy with it. But it lacks some things.

Therefore, we are searching for a skilled php/mysql developer with
experience in developing websites with these tools. It would be great
if that person would have a passion for demos aswell. To be honest,
the things planned aren't that complicated (or at least i hope so) so
i don't think it will be that time consuming.

So if you like this site and would like to dedicate some time taking
it one step further, please contact me at the usual address (see
contact page on the website) to join our team.

thanks

There are updates available for two popular Amiga MP3-players.

Amiga Amp 2.14:

"Some more bugfixes: No http requesters any more when trying to play
a shoutcast stream while LoadBuffer is set to FILE and more reliable
streaming from servers sending the data in very small packages."

http://www.amigaamp.de/Binaries/AmigaAMP214.lha

And secondly:

"Amiplifier 2.35:

 - fixed negative time display bug when the size of the mp3 increase
while playing (when downloading the actual song from internet).

 - fixed MPEG-infowindow filename underscore bug

 - The ARexx interface has been re-written using the arexx.class (this
fixed a bug in the ARexx interface using it with very long commands,
droped the WAIT command - the arexx.class doesn't support it)."

Why Amplifier 2.35 is released as news now is because I never heard
of it until today when I searched for an arexx bug with the wait
problem solved.

SimpleMail is a new mailer for the Amiga platform (both classic and
OS4) and compatible systems (MorphOS). It is intended to be as
portable as possible so there speaks nothing against a version for
other systems, like for example Windows.

In the current state, SimpleMail is an beta version but it is very
stable however as we try to implement every feature so that it works
and go then on to the next one. However, SimpleMail grows very fast
and with your help it can overgrow YAM soon.

You will always find the latest versions (which are not necessarily
placed in the AMINET) on the website. There is also a FAQ, please read
it carefuly!

If you have any questions or bugs then send them to the
user-mailinglist please, whose URL you'll find in the website links.
Bug reports should submitted to the Bug Tracking system. But if you
have encouragements so send them to one of the main developers. You
can find our e-mail addresses in contact.

Date News
2005/02/05 Version 0.25 of SimpleMail released! The changes are:

 * RFC 3490 support for domains of email addresses.

 * The mail preview no longer embeds the mail header but displays it
separatly. This can be switched to a compact form to save space.

 * Multiple imap accounts (with different logins) per imap server are
now possible.

 * If available "TheBar.mcc" is now used (for the main toolbar only)

 * Bug fixes and other improvements

Tales of Tamar: new homepage/announcement of the "Great War of Anarrow" (update)
The homepage of the massively multiplayer PBEM game Tales of Tamar comes with a new design found under the title link. In this role playing game the player takes over the tasks of a leader to build up his country from a little village to a strong empire. In Tales of Tamar can up to 12,000 players participate. One round is played each day. And, if enough players can be found, a special war will take place:

The Great War of Anarrow!

Quest for all Amigians of the blue and the red side!

Tales of Tamar, the round based strategy and role playing game, invites all owners of an AmigaOne or a Pegasos computer with MorphOS to play Tales of Tamar 4 months for free and to take part in the 'Great War of Annarrow'.

If at least 100 players on each side register a new territory will be opened in Elerion from April, 2nd 2005 with the Hombres on the one side of the area and the Mosianers on the other side. Both developers teams, Hyperion and the MorphOS developers team, will officially be invited. They'll represent the overlords of the specific party and therefore are very special for each race.

Winner of this war will be the party that conquered more land. This will be judged by the games jury.

Here are some more rules:
  • Each player has to register via e-mail at Wolfen@tamar.net and to announce the side for which he/she will fight. To do so just put in the subject line the keywords 'blaue Mosianer' or 'rote Hombres'
  • The war only takes place with at least 100 players on each side
  • The more players take part the better for the particular side
  • The game is for free for four months. After this time all players will be set to shareware and have to pay depending on the state of the empire or may play furtheron for free
  • In 'The Great War of Annarrow' nobody can claim the ToT prize as all play for free
  • All rules of the Tamar world are valid. Insults and contempts are IT allowed as long as they sound medieval
  • People who have questions regarding 'The Great War of Annarrow' may visit at any time irc.euirc.net on channel #Tales (using a medieval sounding nickname), port 6667 in our tavern and ask the OPs
  • Each player owns only one empire
  • Trolls are very welcome :-)
  • The game starts on April, 2nd 2005 and ends on August, 2nd 2005 with the pronouncement of judgement
Enjoy :-)

Expat: support for the AmigaOS4 version of the XML parser official
The maintainers of the XML parser Expat have taken over Steven Solie's adaptions so that the soon to be released next release version of Expat will contain official OS4 support.

You can find the AmigaOS4 version in the OS4Depot or directly in the CVS. The program is quite simple but fast and slim. If you encounter any problems with the OS4 version of Expat please contact the author. (snx) (Translation: wk)

Preview: Database "Sbase 4 Pro" for AmigaOS 3/4
Russ Norby from Mr. Hardware Computers who is publisher of the well-known database software "SBase 4 Pro" as well as the current programmer Richard "evilrich" Drummond have explained the status of the development at amigaworld.net:

SBase already runs under AmigaOS 4 (screenshot). The next forthcoming commercial version will still always use the old graphical user interface but is in fact highly optimated and adapted to AmigaOS 3/4. Besides this OS 1.x-specific code has been deleted and the program can now be compiled with GCC.

There is a great progress in the graphic support but many of the changes and news will be only available with the next big update (SBase 5). The current beta version of SBase 4 is available for PPC, 68k-FPU and 68k-NoFPU. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Airstrike & Super Mario Clone

Pawel 'stefkos' Stefanski made updates of the SDL games ports Airstrike and Super Mario Clone for MorphOS available. The latter needs the new bug fixed version of the powersdl_ttf.library. Thanks for the bug fixed library go to Ilkka 'itix' Lehtoranta and Herbert 'HAK' Klackl.

Furthermore does Pawel Stefanski search for beta testers for the game Miliarderzy (MorphOS and LinuxPPC version). Interested ones may contact the author via e-mail.

OpenPCI updated to v2.0
Benjamin Vernoux released OpenPCI v2.0 for Pegasos I + II, GRex A1200/A4000, Amithlon, Prometheus and Mediator. The SDK got enhanced with more descriptions, many examples with C source code and a tutorial, also with C source code examples. The SDK can be obtained via e-mail from the author.

Changes in OpenPCI v2.0:
  • Some routines optimized
  • New functions:
    • pci_physic_to_logic_addr()
    • pci_obtain_card()
    • pci_release_card()
  • Compatible with older drivers written for OpenPCI V1.x; it is advised, though, to support the new PCI card lock mechanism (pci_obtain_card()/pci_release_card()) to avoid problems with drivers using the same PCI card
  • Bug fixed read & write_config for Prometheus
  • Usage of the lock mechanism of the Prometheus, GRex and Amithlons
This library hasn't been tested by the author on Mediator, Prometheus, GRex and Amithlon, thus he asks for feedback regarding this library running on these systems and on Pegasos I + II.

New in the OpenPCI Realtek 8139 SANA2 driver:
  • Bug fixes regarding Genesis and AmiTCP and possibly further TCP/IP stacks
  • Problems solved when the transfer speed was forced into the 100 Mb half or full duplex mode
  • Fixed latency problems/'dead' network caused by an error in the SANA2 driver
  • Optimized interrupt code and main source code
OpenPCI Terratech 512i/FM801 AHI driver:
  • Only 68k version included (a fully working MorphOS native version would be already existing and possibly later released)
  • Full playback mode is supported
  • Recording mode is not supported

GUI-builder: ConfGui published
ConfGui is a GUI-builder for configuration files. It creates a graphical user interface from a script file and is loaded in the following way: "confgui g=s:indent.dlg c=.indent.pro". Short help texts can be displayed as Bubble-Help. Therefore it makes the use of programs easier with many configuration paramters.

Linux-PPC: Floppy patch 1.0
Pavel Fedin aka Sonic released Floppy driver patch for Linux 2.6.8 kernel. This patch allows to use a floppy drive in non-DMA mode on PegasosPPC machines. To use it:
  1. Do not build floppy driver as a module, link it statically. Transferring parameters to it from insmod is still problematic, at least it doesn't work properly on the author's system.
  2. Specify floppy=nodma in kernel's arguments. Also you'll need to specify your drive type here using floppy=[Drive number],[Drive type],cmos. For example, floppy=0,4,cmos specifies type 4 (1.44 mb 3.5") for drive 0.
This patch does not affect operation of the driver in DMA mode so it's safe to use on any platform.
