Flood Catastrophe: Appeal for Donations
The tidal wave catastrophe in the Indian Ocean causes great shock here at home as well. Aid organizations are dealing with more than 100,000 dead, possibly more than 1,000 of them are from Germany. Donate - even small amounts alleviate the emergency! If you would like to help those in the disaster areas, you may donate to the following account links:

amiga-news.de: Changes to Editorial Team
Two changes occurred this month in amiga-news.de's editorial team: Alfred Sturm left; he had tended the Amiga Link Directory from June 2000 until December 2004 by adding and deleting websites and putting up a screenshot of each. His responsibilities there have been taken over by Christoph Gutjahr. Don't forget to announce your new Amiga websites in the Amiga Link Directory. Gerhard "Gary7" Schmid ceased his activity as moderator of the "classified advertisements" forum. His successor is Martina Jacobs, who returns to amiga-news.de. She had managed the English language section for three years. We thank our two departing coworkers for their commitment in the last years and wish them for the future all prosperity! AROS: Latest state of the TCP/IP stack development
By the title link there is a forum thread at AROS-Exec, which contains information about the current state of the TCP/IP stack development for AROS and a screenshot. The latter shows the browser Mosaic and a simple webserver, Cheetah. An e-mail client is in development.

According to that thread there are two stacks under development now. One developer goes for the TCP/IP bounty and develops a SANA2 compatible driver. That stack might, like Roadshow, become an AmiTCP heir and accordingly build on the bsdsocket.library.

The second version is a port of LwIP by those both developers who contributed the screenshot. Currently only loopback is working, but a tap/tun driver for the Linux hosted version of AROS is close. Here, the bsdsocket.library is a regular, disk based library. The first call of that library leads to the start of the stack task and programs may access by the bsdsocket.library the network. But the driver will be a different one. (snx) (Translation: ub)

Image editor: Pixel32 for MorphOS announced
Pavel Kanzelsberger, author of Pixel32, announces under the title link a port for MorphOS, to be presented in a few weeks. Pixel32 is an image/photo/animation painting/editing and retouching application usable for all kind of graphicians, but best for web designers (screenshot).

Some of its features:
  • multiplatform design with own skinnable GUI, which allows us running Pixel32 in Windows, BeOS and even in DOS
  • most of routines written in highly optimized 32-bit assembler decreasing program's size and increasing its speed
  • plugin architecture allows adding new effects, import/export plugins but also new dynamic brushes (called BrushFX), layer types etc.
  • supporting all popular file formats
  • support for layers, channels, masks, selections
  • support for animations, image clickmaps, slices, web optimizations and other webtools simplyfing your work
  • variety of brushes, including animated and full color brushes
  • variety of patterns allowing pattern-painting, texturizing and more
  • variety of color/alpha gradients with universal usage
  • templates, styles, layouts...
  • and much more...
Currently, as a Christmas present, Pixel32 can be purchased for USD 20 until end of the year. If one registers now, all updates until next major release (v2.0) will be free. Furthermore, the registration is platform independent, so that one can use his license also with upcoming ports to other operating systems.

There are demo versions of the current version 1.0 RC2 for Windows, Linux and BeOS/Zeta as well as of version 0.99.8 also for QNX, Solaris and MS-DOS. In these demo versions there are only two limitations: a visible watermark in the images and a small annoying dialog box informing about the usage of a demo version. (snx)

MorphOS: OpenTTD 0.3.5
Christian Rosentreter announces that the new version of OpenTTD (which is an Open Source clone of the well-known strategy game Transport Tycoon Deluxe) has been finished and with it he wishes all MorphOS- and Amiga-users a Merry Christmas.

Important changes:
  • [Network] New network, very stable, a lot of new features
  • [Network] Ingame Serverlist (with online game-servers to join
  • [Network] Webbased Serverlist: http://servers.openttd.org/
  • [Network] Added dedicated server support
  • [Network] Cheat protection in MultiPlayer
  • [Network] Patch settings are also synced with the server
  • [Network] Chat
  • Custom currency settings
  • Per-station vehicle lists
  • More realistically sized catchment areas
  • Sticky windows
  • Even better support for new grf-files
  • Implement improved vehicle loading algorithm
  • Even more advanced in-game console (press ^ to open it)
  • OpenTTD runs with the grf files of the DOS version
  • [Big Endian Systems (MacOS, MorphOS, LinuxPPC)]: are able to load savegames by TTD(Patch)
  • new languages: Spanish, Catalan and Icelandic
  • And many, many more things....
If you want to know the complete list of changes then have a look at ChangeLog which the archive contains. The archive can be downloaded under the title link.

Comments:
  • Currently the "Dedicated Server"-support (OpenTTD -D) does not work with Amiga TCP/IP-stacks. But the game itself can create a normal server. Games between Windows, Linux, MacOS and MorphOS are possible without any problems.
  • The Amiga68k-support in the source code possibly is not working because of the many changes. Christian Rosentreter (karibu@gmx.net) himself cannot test the new code under 68k and therefore he asks for feedback and diff-files to be able to fix existing problems in the new network code.

Update of Hollywood Game TriMa'gic
The Hollywood game TriMa'gic has reached version 1.0 for 68k, WarpUp and MorphOS; the wishes of Tristan Mangold (TriMa) have been realized.

New developments are that sounds have been added, one can right-click to turn in the other direction as well, and because someone who preferred it asked for it, the game may be skinned to the darker original version. It comes with both skins. To do this some bugs with the ring-selection were overcome.

Along with the main page (under the title-link) there's a mirror.

The author thanks Tristan Mangold for his game skin, his idea and the suggestions for improvement and wishes everyone a happy celebration and a great New Year. (snx) (Translation: dm)

WinUAE 1.0 public beta #3, Remarks on Postscript Printing
With version 0.9.92 the WinUAE Team is possibly releasing the last beta-version before the final release 1.0. Whoever is able to locate bugs is asked to advise the authors.

There is now better online help that explains about printing and the "autoflush" function more clearly.

Changes in WinUAE 0.9.92:

Bug fixes:
  • Regular HDF TD_GEOMETRY returned incorrect data (caused some larger HDF's fail to mount, 0.9.91 only)
  • Filesystem bug fix (0.9.90-91), files with Windows System or Hidden -flag set didn't open properly in all cases
  • Stardust starwars-scroller in cycle-exact mode
  • SuperStardust AGA tunnel-section and Superfrog intro bee flashing plus other sprite emulation fixes
  • Random disk formatting verify errors when using non-turbo mode (was broken couple of releases ago)
  • Display corruption/crashes if display width was larger than 1024 and display depth was 32bit (only native display mode, Picasso96 was unaffected)
  • Windowed mode window close button didn't work if "Use CTRL+F11 to quit" was enabled
  • Input-panel autofire yes/no-selection
  • AVIOutput video recording bug in interlaced modes

New features:
  • Filesystem emulation now uses NTFS named streams to store Amiga FS protection flags and comment instead of __UAEFSDB.__-files (non-NTFS drives still use old method)
  • Postscript printer emulation using Ghostscript. All Windows supported printers work now. Amiga-side only needs standard Amiga Postscript printer driver
  • Automatic print job flush after user configurable timeout
  • Improved hardfile creation, filesystem selection (OFS/FFS/SFS) etc.
  • Disk swapper key shortcuts:
    • END+1-0 (not numeric keypad) = insert image from swapper slot 1-10
    • END+SHIFT+1-0 = insert image from swapper slot 11-20
    • END+CTRL+1-4 = select drive

  • GUI drag'n'drop (no more ugly up/down arrows)
  • Screenshots are now named _xxx.bmp
  • User configurable emulation speed adjustment from 5 to 100 fps
  • Rar and 7zip -archive support (using archiveaccess.dll)
  • Some custom chipset emulation improvements here and there
  • Improved drive click sound emulation
  • X-Arcade build-in key mappings
  • Onscreen disk and HD leds flash red while writing
  • "Always on top"-windowed mode setting

distributed.net: PowerPC/AmigaOS Surpasses x86/DOS in the RC5-72 Competition
The PowerPC/AmigaOS platform zipped past x86/DOS sooner than expected, taking 14th place among platform rankings. MorphOS: System patch "Zapper"
"Zapper" modifies the ZipWindow() function of the intuition.library, i.e. the behaviour of the "Zoom" gadget at the top right border of a window. Instead of switching between two different window sizes, it resizes the window to full screen by click now. If the title bar is enabled that will be kept free.

Zapper also may be used in "Smart Resizing" mode which resizes windows only on the not already used screen area and does not hide other windows.

Amiforce/Abakus-Design: Seasonig greetings and Snowman (Classic)
With Snowman (Classic) a tiny Christmas game is available at Abakus-Design. Unfortunately an entire new game was due lack of time not possible and the same reason lead to only minor changes to the game:

The game is running in 800x600 with any colour depth. Also on classic Amigas it should run without problems. Some new figures were pixeled which are now on wood plates. Thus, the game comes closer to the C64 original version. The archive is about 10 MB in size.

Last but not least Telemar Rosenberger and Franz Schlick wish a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2005. (cg) (Translation: ub)

MP3 player: AmigaAMP 2.13
Thomas Wenzel writes:

"Just on time for Christmas there is an update for AmigaAMP. It is nothing world moving; I just fixed some bugs. New features aren't there, but code maintaining is better than nothing, I guess.

For example the old version 2.12 messed badly around with several state messages of the mpega.library which are not used by the original, but are by the libmad version. Directories containing brackets in their name could not be added to the playlist, etc.

All that and some other smaller bugs are now fixed and the program gained further stability.

Enjoy it" (cg) (Translation: ub)

In doing so you are able to enjoy the fabulous English landscape of 1190 as well as the giant castles and funny characters. The thrilling story is introduced by an award-winning introduction and transfers you directly into the hero\s body with the first mission, in which you have to set the captive comrades free. Take up the battle against the oppressors and free the farmers from the Prince\s reign! Be smart, be fast! Be Robin Hood!

Features:
  • More than 30 non-linear missions in which, for instance, you have to save Little John and Brother Tuck and prevent a wedding between Marianne and the revolting Guy of Gisbourne or attack the taxation collectors of the Sheriff of Nottingham
  • Visit five giant castles on different ways, at day and night times, and at different weather conditions
  • Play with up to nine integrated characters being outstanding due to their specific abilities and qualities
  • Due to an innovative fighting system you are able to control the hero\s sword in battles by mouse
  • Decide yourself which tactic appears to be the right one for you: reach the goal by creeping around the guards or fight bravely using sword and bow
System requirements:

  • Decoding of single frames
  • Support of multitrack videos in Ogg Mediastream or Matroska Media-Vision
The following link points to a demo video illustrating features of the MSchnitt package: http://pegasossoft.de/Movie.avi (3 MB)

A side effect of MSchnitt is the manipulation of multitrack videos. These are videos with more than one video or audio track. Here's a demo clip: http://pegasossoft.de/Movie_kopergeschuetzt.mkv (3 MB).

These clips can only be played with the newest MPlayer version, because they make use of the Matroska format. Whoever has no knowledge of MPlayer will only see the copy-protected video, and not the other stuff.

Unfortunately I haven't written any instructions, because that too would be a bit much for me. But whoever seriously wants to use the package can send me an e-mail and I'll write back right away.

Feelin: version 08.00 released
Feelin, an object orientated system for AmigaOS (screenshot), is now available as version 08.00. The system comes in towo parts: the feelin.library written completely in assembler as core and an expandable system to create graphical user interfaces.

Though several classes developed to create graphical user interfaces come with Feelin, it is not restricted to this.

The latest enhancements are among other things:
  • XML file support to develop applications. These so called XMLapplications can be created "on the fly" including support for notify, object export, data import, etc
  • The preferences and particularly the update mechanism were written completely new and many pop classes were added (especially the awaited FC_PopFont class) as well as several preference groups were improved
  • Servers aren't supported anymore but replaced by shared objects (FC_AppServer is now a shared object)
  • The dynamic layout adaption has been further improved and updates are now cleaner (only changed objects are new drawn)
  • The "Locked" state is now fully supported including adjustable colour scheme

Elbox Computer (ANF)

Elbox announces ColdFire-based accelerator board for the Amiga 1200
ELBOX COMPUTER is proud to announce its breath-taking new product for Amiga 1200 computers - DRAGON ColdFire. DRAGON is a ColdFire-based accelerator card combined with the PCI/AGP Expansion busboard.

With its DRAGON ColdFire development, Elbox brings to Amiga computers top performance of the latest Freescale's ColdFire V4e core based-processor, the successor of the 68k dynasty. DRAGON-equipped Amiga computers are ready to run most of the 68k Amiga programs/applications several times faster when compared against Amiga 1200 with the fastest 68060 accelerators.

'By combining many attractive features like the high-performance ColdFire processor, fast DDR memory, AGP graphics, powerful PCI 66MHz technology and comprehensive software support, DRAGON-equipped Amiga computers turn into modern, fast and extremely functional power machines,' said Maciek Binek, president and CEO of Elbox.

The DRAGON's mainboard and the DRAGON's ColdFire CPU card are designed on two separate circuit boards. With modular design, the DRAGON can be easily upgraded and configured to meet the needs of the most demanding Amiga users.

DRAGON Technical Specification:
  • ColdFire MCF5475 processor (410MIPS) running at 266MHz
  • Two sockets for DDR-266 SDRAM modules, support up to 1GByte of memory (1GB/s peak)
  • One AGP slot (264MB/s peak access from the main processor)
  • Five 66/33MHz, 32-bit PCI slots, PCI 2.2 compliant (264MB/s peak)
  • 2MBytes of 32-bit Flash memory (containing upgradeable DRAGON firmware)
  • Asynchronous design with fast access to Amiga 1200 motherboard hardware
  • Multi-channels DMA support (PCI <-> PCI, PCI <-> DDR, PCI <-> AGP, PCI <-> A1200)
  • Auto-Recharge battery-backed Real Time Clock
  • Four high-speed programmable serial (UART/USART/IRDA/modem) controllers (optional)
  • One Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and two FastEthernet 100Mbps controllers (optional)
ColdFire processor:
The DRAGON ColdFire will initially be available with the fastest ColdFire MCF5475 processor in clock speed of 266MHz. MCF5475 features the V4e ColdFire core with MMU, dual precision FPU and EMAC. The 266MHz version of the ColdFire MCF5475 processor provides raw performance of 410MIPS.

Up to 1GB of DDR SDRAM:
The DRAGON comes with two DIMM slots for ultrafast DDR-266 SDRAM memory. This high-speed memory rushes data at up to 1GB/s throughput. It is over 25 times faster compared against the fastest A1200 accelerators available so far. As memory is scalable up to 1GB, you can add RAM to meet increasing demands of your applications and workflow.

AGP Graphic Slot:
The DRAGON comes with the 3.3V 66MHz AGP slot which supports up to 264MB/s data throughput. The following AGP graphics cards will be supported: Radeon 9700, Radeon 9500, Radeon 9200, Radeon 9000, Radeon 7500, Radeon 7000, Voodoo 5, Voodoo 4, Voodoo 3.

PCI Expansion Slots:
The DRAGON comes with five 66/33MHz, 32-bit PCI slots compliant with the PCI 2.2 specification. The DRAGON system can be configured with PCI 66MHz or PCI 33MHz expansion technology. All PCI slots provide DMA capability. The DRAGON's ColdFire processor has linear access to the 4GB PCI space.

Multi-channel DMA support:
DRAGON hardware provides Multi-channel DMA support. PCI bus master cards can provide DMA accesses to all DRAGON resources: the AGP card, DDR memory, other PCI cards and the Amiga 1200 motherboard space. DRAGON' PCI-to-DDR Direct Memory Access can reach up to 264MB/s throughput. This feature allows even the fastest mass storage PCI controllers to run at their top performance.

2MB of 32-bit Flash memory:
DRAGON includes 2 MBytes of the 32-bit extremely fast Flash memory. It includes factory-programmed DRAGON's boot firmware and diagnostic software. Flash ROM allows remapping of the Amiga Kickstart, as well.

FastEthernet 100Mbps and Hi-Speed USB 2.0 (optional):
The DRAGON's MCF5475 processor has one built-in Hi-Speed USB 2.0 controller and two FastEthernet 100Mbps controllers. External ports for these controllers will be available on an optional module. Hardware-acceleration encryption (DES, 3DES, RC4, AES, MD5, SHA-1, RNG) is built into the processor. Dual-channel architecture permits single pass encryption and authentication.

High-Speed serial controllers (optional):
Up to four programmable serial controllers (PSCs), each with separate 512-byte receive and transmit FIFOs for UART, USART, modem, codec, and IrDA 1.1 interface, are built in the DRAGON's MCF5475 processor. External ports for these controllers will be available on an optional module.

Compatible Tower systems:
The DRAGON ColdFire busboard is designed to be used in the following tower systems: Mirage 1200, E/BOX 1200, Power Tower, Winner Tower and Infinitiv Tower. Besides, an Elbox custom-designed case for the DRAGON ColdFire system will be announced soon.

Catweasel MK4 delayed, C64 products on time
Bad news first: Unfortunately, one of our suppliers did not ship in time, so the production of the Catweasel MK4 could not start at the planned time. Due to this delay, we can't ensure that all our customers will have the controller under their Christmas tree. The soonest day of shipment is December 23rd, but it's more probable that shipping starts between Christmas and the new year.

The time that we already rented on the assembly machines is put to good use: In the past days, the last networking card for the C64 "RR-Net" has been sold, so there would have been a delivery bottleneck if the new production run would have been started as planned early 2005. The second production run of RR-Net networking cards can now be brought forward, so the network-bundle for the C64 that we're offering since September 2003 is kept available without any interruption.

Developer Oliver Achten has finished his first product that will be produced by individual Computers: MMC64 is an MMC- and SD-card interface for the C64 computer. It uses the multimedia and Secure Digital flash cards that are known from the PDA world. That means that after you power up the computer, you can access any MMC or SD card that's FAT16-formatted - up to the size of 4GB! The built-in flashable BIOS with integrated file browser allows the user to load games and other programs, play SID-files with the built-in player, or write D64 images to a floppy drive.

MMC64 has a clockport for expansions like RR-Net, and a pass-through for other expansion cards. This pass-through is 100 % compatible with the Retro Replay - both expansions can be used in their full functionality at the same time. MMC64 will be available for 49,- EUR starting February 2005, and will be demonstrated for the first time at the TUM party in Hemsbach, Germany (December 27th to 29th, 2004). (cg) (Translation: cg)

MorphOS Value Package V1.2
The MorphOS Value Package, a collection of useful software, got an update. New in the package are the following programs: Frogger, Bolcatoid, Atari800 emulator and DOSBox. Updates of "Die kleine Gilde II" and Jabberwocky replace older versions.

New is also that the archives of the contained programs are available as updated full package and as incremental update to MVP V1.2.

Next to this everybody who's interested should download MVP with the wanted language support. Supported are by now the languages German, English and Dutch. A French version is still being worked on.

As it was already the case with the previous releases is the setup of mirrors wanted. Questions, comments and suggestions for improvements are always welcomed by the author.

DKG II: author asks for speed tests
Within the game "Die kleine Gilde II" it's in the meantime possible to play MP3 files in the background. But the problem arises that this is apparently reserved to UAE, Amithlon and probably to AmigaOne and Pegasos systems (the latter ones haven't been tested yet). A real Amiga with 060 processor already seems to be to slow for this, there are lags and distortion while playing the MP3 files, the opening of windows may be slowed down.

To get an overview over as many different systems as possible a system analysis including a speed test was included in the DKG II preferences. The author asks therefore as many users as possible to run this test and inform him about the result together with the system configuration. You can contact Steffen Nitz via e-mail under Habgier@gmx.de.

The test results of the author's system under Amithlon and WinUAE can be found in the December diary under the title link. (snx) (Translation: wk)

AHT Europe: MIDI interfaces for Amiga, Pegasos and PCs
Birmingham, Dec. 11 2004 - AHT Europe Ltd. are pleased to announce the immediate availability of their first Amiga products: MIDI interfaces for the Commodore Amiga as well as the Pegasos and standard PCs. (PDF version)

The MIDI interface Vivaldi  (photo) supports standard MIDI transfer through the game port (MPU401), either on-board or on a PCI card. It is suitable for all operating systems that support standard MIDI transfer over the game port and has been successfully tested with standard MIDI software under MorphOS/Pegasos, Linux and Windows (including Bars'n'Pipes under WinUAE). The Vivaldi  MIDI interface provides the following connectors: 1 x MIDI IN, 1 x MIDI THRU, 3 x MIDI OUT (synchronised).

The MIDI interface Trivaldi  (photo) is a tripleplay MIDI interface for Commodore Amiga computers. It has three asynchronous MIDI OUT ports, which means that each port can have its own MIDI range of 16 channels. With Bars'n'Pipes you can therefore address 48 MIDI channels. The Trivaldi  connects to the Amiga serial port.

Each MIDI interface comes with a manual, a CD-ROM and a 2 year warranty period. The CD-ROM contains drivers as well as the free sequencer software Bars'n'Pipes with all add-ons, the utility Directory Opus 4 and more.

The advisory retail pricing incl. VAT is 39.95 Euro (Vivaldi) and 49.95 Euro (Trivaldi), respectively. Both interfaces are available now. Dealer inquiries are welcome.

Shipping may start end of January 2005, the price at a volume of five to ten boards would be 210 AUD without SCSI (about 124 Euro) or 260 AUD with SCSI (about 151 Euo) each.

The in the early 90s by the Australian company Phoenix Microtechnologies produced mainboard is an advanced replacement for the original A1000 board. Unlike the Amiga 1000 it features the ECS chipset, a Kickstart 1.3-ROM and 1 MB Chip-RAM and, optionally, SCSI. Also an A2000 videoslot and a battery buffered clock are onboard. There have been around 500 - 1000 boards produced.

The board will need for operation some (socket) chips which are to get from an Amiga mainboard.

Update: (09.12.2004, 23:30, cg)

The boards offered here are the last ones remaining from the final production run in 1991. All 25 boards are sold now. (snx) (Translation: ub)

IBM announces details to Cell-Chip
The new consoles from Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft will be introduced on the E3 in May next year for the first time. But the winner is already clear: IBM. All consoles will have a CPU from IBM which is unique until now.

Such a news is also the Cell-Chip which IBM together with Sony and Toshiba developed. As a first product a workstation will be developed which contains the Cell-Chip and which will become the developing environment for the PlayStation 3. Cell is related with IBMs POWER-Chips and is a Multi-Core-System with 64-Bit. Each of this Cores could have an operating system independent of the others. Unlike the processor of the PlayStation 2 which is the Emotion Engine, Cell is not mainly optimated for consoles but useful for different purposes. (nba) (Translation: dr)

MorphZone and PPCZone Temporarily Unavailable Owing to Attack
MorphZone as well as PPCZone are temporarily not reachable, after an illicit attempt was made to use the server to send spam.

"MorphZone and PPCZone are both down temporarily while repairing a security breach on the server. This breach was part of a spammers attack in an attempt to proliferate SPAM specifically targeted to Internet users in Brazil. While we proceed to work on the cause of the problem, MorphZone and PPCZone will be unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and the administration of MorphZone hopes to have this cleared up soon.

At this time, we do not believe this attack was by or directed towards any Amiga, MorphOS, or other specific community. Due to the nature of the attack, which we have evidence to believe went to other unrelated servers, this seems to simply be a case of spammers trying to hijack our bandwidth to supply their endless need to send useless e-mail that no one ever reads anyway!" MySQL Development Team supports Pegasos Server
30th November 2004
Uppsala, Sweden
Contact: bbrv@genesi.lu

With the support of the Genesi/Freescale PegasosPPC Pilot Project, the MySQL core development team has received a full complement of PowerPC-enabled Open Desktop Workstations. "We are excited about this new alternative platform. Sony Europe's success with MySQL on Pegasos has opened our eyes to its potential. We are pleased to be able to offer our internal resources support for this platform," said Mika Asikainen, MySQL's Partner Manager.

When it delivered the machines, Genesi provided an orientation seminar - including a focus on the use of AltiVec. MySQL AB intends to provide benchmark results that will help demonstrate Pegasos' superior watt/cycle efficiency and how MySQL database deployments on the platform can reduce organizations' total cost of ownership.

Genesi is a Certified MySQL Partner and a Platinum Sponsor of the MySQL Users Conference 2005. (cg) (Translation: cg)

New products from individual Computers
The first Sunday in advent is already over, the downtown areas have been equipped with Christmas decoration, and the production for this year's Christmas business is running at full speed at individual Computers:

We're especially happy to announce that despite the two competing products in the market, the flash-card "Kickflash OS4" has been selling to well, that a second production run was necessary. The new cards have already been shipped to our retail partners last week, so there should not be any delays by now. Kickflash OS4 is shipped with 1MB flashrom space.

The betatest-phase of the C-One also made a successful start. Since the beginning of this month, everyone can buy the world's first computer that is purely based on programmable logic. This means that the computer can even start without a processor chip! The board itself will not experience changes any more - the hardware is final. During the beta-phase, there will be core-updates that can be downloaded from the C-One website, and transferred to the C-One using off-the-shelve mass storage media like CF cards or CDs. The board is shipped with a CPU/RAM card with a 65816 processor and 128K superfast S-RAM. For a limited period of time, the board price includes a PS2 memory module.

We also had to make a new production run for our most successful product for the C64 so far: During this summer, the last unit of the Retro Replay was sold. As a distinctive mark for the third production run, we have changed the colour again: The Retro Replays from 2001 have been shipped in black. The second production run from the year 2003 was built on blue circuit boards. Starting now, the Retro Replay is available in shiny red!

The complete sellout of the second production run also means that there will be another party sponsored by individual Computers, organized together with the scene-group CyberpunX. Just like during the Pentecost weekend of this year, the party will take place in an old air-raid bunker from worldwar II in Bochum, Germany. The date has already been set to June 10th to June 12th, 2005, and not only Retro Replay owners are invited! More information can be found on the party website.

Last but not least we want to inform you that the release of the Catweasel MK4 is delayed a bit. Parts of the production had to be moved to the Far East in order to keep the announced price. For the first time, we will only use lead-free materials with the exception of only two components. With this new approach, we are preparing for the new laws that will become effective in 2006. The new release date of the Catweasel MK4 has been set to the third week of December, so it should arrive at our retail partners just in time for Christmas. A pre-production run of Catweasel MK4 controllers has already been finished late October of this year, and many of those controllers have been shipped to developers for free.

A test version of NewGUI 1.4.1 for AmigaOS 3.x and CyberGraphX 3+ with a few bugfixes and new functions like transparent windows is available for download under the title link. Here are screenshots. NewGUI also runs under the 68k emulation of MorphOS.

With regard to the transparency, it's not a true transparency - a new layers.library would be necessary for that. The background is not updated. Nevertheless the transparency effect requires a lot of processor performance, but according to the author's message the time for the calculation of the background has been reduced to acceptable levels on a 68040.

The Pyramids demo requires at least a 16 bit display. The author welcomes comments and suggestions for improvement. (snx) (Translation: dm)

Genesi: A statement concerning MorphOS
The current MorphOS release is owned by the shareholders of Genesi and is being distributed today in a form fully licensed and paid for. Genesi will resume support of external MorphOS 1.5 development when there is a clear plan and a date set for the release.

The posts against Genesi made on MorphOS.net are unfortunate. These actions of a single person have damaged our discussions with major strategic partners and have cast doubt on Genesi and MorphOS. There has never been any disagreement about paying for development, in fact more than $500,000 have been paid to MorphOS developers and for MorphOS licenses. There has been disagreement however, how much and for what to pay for.

MorphOS does not currently drive significant sales of the platform. It is our hope that one day it will, but this will not be achieved without the majority of the Company's resources being focused on activities that generate revenue and profit.

Genesi has become a partner/sponsor of the Debian, Gentoo and Crux Linux developer communities. Genesi is also enrolled in the official board support/partner programs of Yellow Dog Linux, Montavista and QNX Software Systems. It is in these areas that Genesi is now focused.

AmigaOne-XE: Hardware fix for the DMA/Ethernet problem?
AmigaOS4 beta tester Steven Solie explains in his report about the 'Ottawa Amiga Show' that directly after the show, his AmigaOne dealer (LiveWire Systems) applied a hardware fix to his AmigaOne that fixes the lock ups that appear when using onboard IDE DMA at the same time as an Ethernet controller (we reported).

According to Solie, complete information on the procedure will be available to all AmigaOne dealers soon. Eyetech did not confirm any of the above statements yet. (cg) (Translation: cg)

"AmigaDevBox" to support developers with OS4 porting
The aim of the project "AmigaDevBox" is to support developers without PPC hardware to port their projects to AmigaOS 4.

To make this possible AmigaOne owners are asked to help those developers by giving them access to their AmigaOnes in one or another way (e.g. via the Internet) or to compile/test projects for the developer.

Interested users as well as developers looking for help may register themselves under the title link on a world map or get an overview over the already registered persons. (cg) (Translation: wk)

AmiStart: module update
Because of a startup problem in the library installation crashed AmiStart under AmigaOS4. With the new modules should this be solved. It is recommended to use these modules on other systems, too.

Many thanks to Stephan Rupprecht as with his help the bug could be found. As the modules were realized through libraries it is important to restart the computer after copying the updated files or to do an 'avail flush'. (snx) (Translation: wk)

IOSPIRIT: Onlineshop only available until 24th November 2004
Major internal reorganization efforts will make it necessary to deactivate the order function of the online shop on the 24th of November 2004. The time needed for these efforts is estimated with two weeks, but can be longer due to dependencies on external factors. The deactivation of the onlineshop thus happens for indefinite time. Customers who want to order software still this year thus should make their orders until the 24th of November 2004. In this context we also want to remind our customers of the still running fall promotion with price reductions of up to 75 %.

Apart from the ability to place new orders, all functions of the website will stay available as usual. (cg) (Translation: cg)

AmithlonUpdate project cancelled
Guido Mersmann told us that AmithlonUpdate which is available in Aminet will be not further developed but deleted from it. He further wrote:

"Because Bernd Meyer just has told me in the public Yahoo mailing list AmithlonOpen that I am not allowed to use the archives which he made available I cannot continue developing it. Unfortunately the users will lose a project because of a personal conflict of two people.

The still existing archives will be deleted from Aminet as soon as possible. Because as I know the Aminet is still offline the AmithlonUpdate V1.30 and the corresponding source code archive which were going to be uploaded will be deleted, too." (snx) (Translation: dr)
