Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
I suppose it's rather appropriate that this last issue of "Amiga
Update" sees Amiga Inc., in something of a turmoil. During our entire
12 plus years of publication, one thing the Amiga has never had is
long term stability. The current situation is nothing like the near
fatal circumstances of that weekend after Commodore went bankrupt, the
event that launched "Amiga Update", but it is interesting.
Besides the surprise announcement that DiscreetFX wants to buy Amiga,
we have the revelation this month of legal issues with Gary Hare,
briefly CEO of Amiga and KMOS. The accusations back and forth seem to
center on competence, failure to pay salary, and who was supposed to
do what for whom. You can read more about this at ANN
http://ann.lu/detail.cgi?category=news&file=1161197009.msg where there
is reference to the original article at Amiga-News.de (in German). We
are not in a position to unravel this for you - not sure anyone who
wasn't involved could. But we suggest you check out the articles if
you find this sort of thing interesting. It is unlikely the full story
will every be known by other than the participants. What is or will be
important is how all this affects Amiga Inc., and we'll have to wait
some for that to develop.
Then there's the matter of the interview with the once and current CEO
(I think I have that right) Bill McEwen. We have a quote and a few
thoughts on that below.
As for "Amiga Update", as announced this will be its last issue. Well,
probably. If OS4 actually does make it to production release before
January 1 of 2007, we will send out a special issue celebrating the
event. Regardless of whether that happens or not, be assured the
mailing list will not be given or sold to anyone. The website will
remain up for now so you can rummage through past issues if you wish.
I have no big speaches or fairwells as I really have no idea what I'd
say. I will be around, and keeping a close eye on the community of
which I'm a part just like before. But the time devoted to publishing
this newsletter will be invested in other pursuits. There are many
good sources of Amiga news out there. If you need one place to go to
start looking, head over to www.amigaworld.net and continue on from
there.
Hey, this being the last issue, it might become a collector's item! Be
sure you hang on to your original copy! :-)

Chicago, Illinois - October 19th, 2006
Visual FX company, DiscreetFX LLC Inc., and their investors sent a
formal proposal to Amiga Inc., requesting formal validation of the
company's value. Currently, DiscreetFX are hard at work completing the
"Super Size Me"-like film about trans fat, entitled "Oil Change." The
plan is to secure funding to purchase Amiga Inc. and all of its IP in
the next year, to take place after completion of the movie, which has
been in pre-production for more than a year.
Such a transaction, however, depends on whether Amiga Inc. agrees to
sell in the next year, and if an agreed-upon price can be negotiated.
DiscreetFX believesthere is tremendous value in the Amiga brand and
though we primarily develop our visual effects software on NewTek
video editing solutions for Windows and Mac OS X," said DiscreetFX CEO
Bill Panagouleas, "the Amiga has always held a special place in my
heart since I developed my first product for the Amiga Video Toaster I
want to help bring the Amiga back to it's former glory in new IT
markets." If an agreement can be reached between Amiga Inc. and
DiscreetFX, the much speculated return of the Amiga brand could spark
a unique, new chapter in the machine's ever fluctuating history.Amiga
OS 4.0. "Even {the original press release just ends at this point.
What you see is what we have. Brad}
Best regards,
DiscreetFX Team

An interview of Bill McEwen at the "Temple of Technology" site
appreared during the month (October 4). We cannot run the interview
here but can suggest you go read it for yourself.
We can also point out that most of the product questions were ducked,
which isn't too surprising when discussing works in progress. McEwen
does state that OS 5 will be so different that it needs a new name. It
will be better than Mac OS X. Not sure what that means exactly, but it
probably tells us something about what Amiga regards as quality.
We were pleased to find out that Fleecy Moss is still with the
company and still leading development efforts.
The most interesting question and answer from our point of view was
the following;
"In the Amiga.org questions, you ended the session with a personal
note to the Amiga community. It described a lot of events that
explained why things happened as they did after Amiga was bought from
Gateway.
"While it was well received, one thing disappointed me. I had hoped
for a hint of self criticism. While external events played a big role
in the outcome, to me it's obvious that Amiga made a bunch of mistakes
at the time (Amithlon for example), and an admission of those things
would have made me more confident that the new Amiga deserves more
attention and support, and that you've learned from the past.
Comments?
"BM>> Of course we made a great many mistakes, and I take full
responsibility for those mistakes. There are so many differences from
what I was and what I am today, I am hardly the same person. We are a
much more careful company with far more detailed plans, and we are
taking steps that keep us in focus on the target.
"We simply did not have the financial backing to accomplish what we
needed to accomplish. The financial decisions that were made then are
not the decisions that we are making today. The operations run very
differently than they did then, and I am held accountable by a board
of directors and Chairman that I check in daily with. We have a
schedule, plans, goals, and milestones that I and the rest of the team
are held to. The board of directors are international in nature, and
are all highly successful people. They also have a vision for what
Amiga is going to be, and they are directly involved in us getting
there.
"So while I can only say that I am sorry for what has transpired in
the past, the most important item is what we are going to deliver
today and tomorrow."

Cinematte Nova Design is seeking companies interested in adding
Cinematte to their product line or individuals interested in starting
a business based on Cinematte.
There is much information regarding Cinematte on this site. What
ollows is business information regarding the sale of this asset.
Financials
Asking: $45,000
Inventory: $4000 approx. (included in the asking price)
Business Summary
Cinematte was created in 1995 as part of the Amiga (a computer popular
in the late 1980?s and early 1990?s for desktop video) software
package, ImageFX. Cinematte was one of the first true digital
bluescreening software packages for compositing actors, and other
subjects, photographed against a blue (or other compatible solid
color) background into another photograph, film or video. While many
applications on all platforms attempt to provide methods of realistic
compositing, Cinematte is one of the few that can do this easily and
realistically using the same methods pioneered in Hollywood features.
In 1996 Cinematte was recreated as a plugin for Adobe?s popular
Photoshop graphics application. First available under the Windows
platform and later on Macintosh OS X. At this time Cinematte was spun
off as its own package and was marketed under a different company name
to distinguish itself.
Cinematte was a strong seller from the start. Originally thought of as
a software tool for special effects companies, Cinematte grew to find
strong appeal in the then-new digital still photography market,
especially with photographers working with catalog photography and the
novelty photograph market.
The Amiga version of Cinematte was the last to receive significant
updates to its functionality in 2002. These new features were
scheduled for implementation on the Windows/Macintosh version, but
were never completed. Other versions were also planned for additional
markets, which would require relatively less programming effort, but
were also not completed. These markets all still exist, as well as
many new markets have arisen. For ten years Cinematte has been a
strong product, and the market still continues to grow for this
quality compositing package.
Cinematte, under a new vision, could also be sold in partnership with
many other companies in the non-linear editing (NLE) and digital
photography worlds as part of bundling or licensing arrangements.
These could be done as one-time deals or be used to drive sales back
to the full Cinematte package.
Any existing company in the graphics field would find Cinematte to be
an excellent addition to its software catalog. Cinematte would also
make an ideal basis for a business for a programmer looking to start
his or her own company.
Market Outlook
Competition: Only two partially competing products existing. Both are
significantly more expensive and lack significant features present in
our product. User interfaces on competition are more limiting as well.
No attempt by competition to appeal to larger market in the pro-sumer
realm.
Growth/Expansion: Expansion possibilities are huge. Cinematte could be
made available as a plugin product for many other packages and
platforms that would greatly expand its market. Features developed for
Amiga version have never been ported to the existing Photoshop plugin.
Distribution: Currently offered through one catalog reseller who does
a good business and sold online direct without any current promotion.
Demo Reel
The Nova Design, Inc. demo reel, including many sequences bluescreened
with Cinematte, can be seen on YouTube at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cAf6cgu5N0
About the Sale
Support/Training: Will provide 60 days of part-time consulting service
on non-programming issues. Programming consulting available at hourly
rate.
Trademarks: Cinematte trademark will be transferred to purchaser.
Source Code: All source code will be transferred to purchaser.
Documentation: All documentation for all editions will be transferred
to purchaser.
Reason Selling: Do not have the time to maintain, nor to build.

Diary: Version 0.5 (13/10/2006)
Author: Andy Broad <andy()broad.ology.org.uk>
Copyright: Andy Broad 2006
This is a first release of a simple to use Diary program.
It's conceived as an AmigaOS4 replacement for the Digita Organiser
but is not intended to be a direct clone of that program. It has a
GUI styled on a traditional paper diary and also an Arexx interface,
Oh and it's a commodity.
Installation:
Copy the contents of the archive to the location of your choice.
say Work:Organiser.
Usage:
The archive contains two programs Diary and import.
---
DIARY is the main program. It can be run from CLI or workbench.
Tooltypes / command line options
FILE - the diary file to be loaded. If not set when starting
from a Project icon the filename will be derived from
the icon.
CX_POPUP/K - set to YES to open window on program start. (defaults
to YES)
CX_POPKEY/K - sets the popup hotkey, defaults to "ctrl alt d"
CX_PRIORITY/K - set the commodity priority
The GUI is fairly simple, click on EDIT / DELETE to toggle modes, in
edit mode clicking on a day gadget will bring up a window to enter a
new event entry. Clicking on an event title will allow editing an
existing event. In delete mode clicking on and event allows to remove
it. (with warning req!)
Before iconification or quiting Diary will ask you to save if the
diary was modified.
---
IMPORT is a quick and dirty tool which allows you to convert a Digita
Organiser 1.1
file to the new format. It works by creating a set of Arexx commands
that can be pasted into a script. Run this script to create your new
diary.
eg:
>work:Organiser/Import Ram:olddiaray >ram:new.rexx
Then edit new.rexx adding
/* */
options results
address DIARY
to the beginning of the file.
You may well find you need to edit the arexx commands by hand,
particularly if had mquotes or apostrophes in any of your titles or
notes.
It works quite well for a 1.1 file may not work at all for later
versions. Use with caution, you may lose data.
KNOWN BUGS:
Adding a large number of events to a given day or creating events will
long title will distort the GUI.
TODO:
Improve the GUI.
Extend Localisation
Extend ARexx interface.
Add Alarms function
Add automation functions. (run commands at start and end of events)
Produce proper documentation (probably html)
HISTORY:
0.5 Changing EndTime gadget will now cause the EndDate gadget to be
set to the start date if not allready set. Clearing the End Date
gadget will still clear the EndTime as well.
When the 1st of the month fell on a sunday it the wrong week would
be displayed.
(FIXED)
Added ICONIFY, SHOW, and HIDE, arexx commands.
Arexx and commodity quit options now bring up a save requester if
the diary has been mofified.
A cancel option has been added to this requester
Added NEXT KEY/N ; PREV KEY/N ; GET KEY/N,FIELD/K,STEM/K DELETE
KEY/N/A,FORCE Arexx Comands
Now displays multiple events in a day in chronological order.
Added "calender gadget" the "empty" "eigth" day.
Changed usage of timer.device so that it doesn't matter if the
system time is set backwards.
Added "Actions" on start an end times of events.
Rearranged GUI slightly to improve look / save space/
Added html documentation to the archive.
0.4 First Public release:
0.1. - 0.3 Internal test builds.

All these packages are alpha versions. This means, that some functions
of the programs are not working or some tools are missing.
The development is stopped for the moment, because I need time for
some other projects. I published these projects in the hope, that it
could be usefull for the community.

At the moment a complete rework/update of the different travel guides
is in progress. Further there is an extension of the information about
parks with better maps for a more precise route calculation. Of course
the emphasis lies on the German map because of the much higher demand.
The network of streets is uptodate including recently opened highway
sections.
If someone wishes his residence to be included (even the smallest
places!) in the map just write a mail with the name of the location,
Geo-coordinates and information on the street connections (description
and the exact distance to other locations).
As always we are searching for helpers for data entering! Lists of
coordinates are always welcome... Alternatively also helpers for the
entering of the data into the maps themself.
There are also possibilities for the view and print od data in various
formats like HTML or PDF instead of AmigaGuide.

4 October, 2006
As of October 5th 2006, the world-wide distribution and publishing
contract with Computer City has ended. Also, a large price reduction
was required to have a competitive pricing when Audio Evolution 5 is
released early next year on Mac OSX and Windows.
This means that from now on, Audio Evolution 4 can be purchased for
the incredibly low price of 49 euro (a 100 euro price drop!) from the
author directly. Because of this price, the full version will be sent
by email instead of on CD. For users of classic machines on OS3, the
older Audio Evolution 3 is also available for only 25 euro (with l
imited support). For ordering information, please send an email to
order@audio-evolution.com or visit the Audio Evolution homepage.
Although AE5 runs partly on OS4/X11 as well, some technical issues
with wxWidgets on OS4/X11 must be resolved first before AE5 can be
released on OS4. AE5 will feature multi-channel recording and the use
of VST effects and/or Audio Units.
For AE4 users, a small update 4.0.9 can be found in the downloads
section. It fixes an issue preventing it from running on newer
kernels. It also includes copy and paste functionality in the MIDI
remote setup window.

ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical
point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data
files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the
executables shipped with the game, allowing you to play them on
systems for which they were never designed!
ScummVM lets you run these adventures: Adventure Soft's Simon the
Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and
Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the
Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins; Westwood Studios' The Legend of
Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility
for Maniac Mansion) system. SCUMM is used for many games,
including Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more.
Compatibility with supported games is continually improving, so check
back often.
Among the systems on which you can play those games are Windows,
Linux, Mac OS X, Dreamcast, PocketPC, PalmOS, AmigaOS, BeOS, OS/2,
PSP, PS2, SymbianOS/EPOC and many more...
Our forum and IRC channel, #scummvm on irc.freenode.net, are open for
comments and suggestions. Please read our FAQ before posting.
Latest Developments
Oct. 29th, 2006: ScummVM 0.9.1 "PalmOS revived" released
We are pleased to announce the 0.9.1 ScummVM bugfix release.
There were lots of important bugfixes and small improvements. We are
also glad that three additional platforms are now officially
supported: Nintendo DS, GP2X and GP32. You can already download
official DS and GP2X binaries, and the GP32 port will be available
soon.
Some of the most significant bugfixes are:
* Many fixes for Humongous Entertainment games and better support
for international versions of the games
* Improved detection of the FM-TOWNS version of Indy3
* Several fixes for The Feeble Files and more non-English versions
are supported now
* Some parts of the Kyrandia engine were rewritten so the game
needs less CPU power now, and thus works better on lower-end
devices
* The PSP, PS2 and WinCE ports were greatly improved
* The PalmOS port is again up-to-date and features separate build
for Tapwave Zodiac
* The WinCE port supports 2002 devices again

This is an OS4 compile of the latest development version of "Battle
for Wesnoth" on http://wesnoth.org. Thanks to Andrea Palmatè for the
original OS4 port and to the Wesnoth team for including the necessary
changes into their CVS, without which this recompile would probably
have been much harder.
The Battle for Wesnoth is a free, turn-based strategy game with a
fantasy theme, and is now available for Amiga OS4.
Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate
heir, or use your dread power over the Undead to dominate the land of
mortals, or lead your glorious Orcish tribe to victory against the
humans who dared despoil your lands. Wesnoth has many different sagas
waiting to be played out. You can create your own custom units, and
write your own scenarios or even full-blown campaigns. You can also
challenge your friends or strangers and fight multi-player epic
fantasy battles.

Catalog Compiler: SimpleCat 3.00 Beta 6
Guido Mersmann has released a new version of his catalog compiler SimpleCat for AmigaOS, AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS. With version 3, SimpleCat obtains a user interface, which should satisfy both developers and translators.
However, it must be pointed out that this is about a beta version, which is still partly incomplete. Since the manual is not updated yet, the online help does not work yet either. However, in the author's opinion, the MUI balloons should give sufficient support. (snx) (Translation: cad)

MorphOS: Updates of three Reggae classes
Grzegorz "Krashan" Kraszewski has published three updates of his MorphOS libraries for stream media:
- Bugfix in audio.output and update to 51.5. Added missing stream seek to the start after playback is finished at stream end. Makes it consistent with MMM_Stop (which rewinds stream too).
- netpbm.demuxer 51.2 now fully supports NetPBM "P1" subformat (monochrome plain text images). Internal buffering speeds up decoding of ASCII data.
- bitplane decoder 51.2 has internal buffering added as well. These are two first Reggae classes written in C++.

Custom chips: Clone-A news
Press release:
The prototype of our Clone-A project - a re-implementation of the Amiga-chipset with modern technology - has been demostrated at the AmiWest show last weekend in Sacramento, California. Many visitors followed our request to bring along disks and programs that put the compatibility of our chipset to the test. None of the programs were a problem for Clone-A. We're especially proud that a previously unpublished demo works fine with Clone-A. According to the author, it does not work properly on the emulator UAE. Special thanks for this go to Christian Herden who brought the demo to the Amiwest show.
Sound-magician Chris Hülsbeck approved of the exact audio playback of Clone-A. Even complicated music routines like the 7-voice title track of Turrican II and the unconventionally programmed ingame-sounds of Apidya were convincing to the ears of the master.

from left to right: Oliver Achten, Jens Schönfeld, Chris Hülsbeck, Christian Herden
Many users have requested Clone-A to be a PCI card for the current PPC boards on the market. As part of the Efika developer program, we offered to develop Clone-A into a PCI card that works with Efika and other PPC boards by BPlan. Today, our offer has been rejected.
Genesi's rejection will have no influence on further development of Clone-A. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Veranstaltung: Report from the AmiWest
Steven Solie resumes his impressions from the AmiWest (October 22, California) under the title link. The main items in brief:
The announced special guest was Bill McEwen from Amiga Inc., who would bring a prototype of a ppc mainboard. But McEwen had to cancel his appearance in the last minute, as his son was injured during a hokey match.
The author himself had a sample of Troika's PPC-motherboard "Panda", which should have been functional in theory. But Solie didn't want to take a risk and he will try the hardware in a more relaxed environment, therefore functional tests were not carried out. According to Solie Hyperion has already received Panda motherboards, and an external company was charged with the redesign of the licensed hardware.
Richard Drummond represented Hyperion and showed the AmigaOS 4-port of the strategy game Gorky 17.
A port of the astronomy software Digital Universe for AmigaOS 4 is in work, the latest beta version was presented at the exhibition.
The Amiga legend Carl Sassenrath was present and apparently very interested in the actual Amiga situation. Meanwhile Sassenrath is discussing his visions around the topic Amiga at the amigaworld.net in certain threads. (cg) (Translation: tz)

Text editor: BareED supports Thai language
By the close collaboration with Dr. Lyndon Hill, author of the Linux and Windows text editor Sontana, BareED now also supports Thai text files.
In addition, by implementing the relevant parts of the WTT standard, which is endorsed by the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI), BareED will detect invalid character sequences upon loading TIS-620 encoded text files and while entering characters. The input check can be adjusted by the user to his own taste in three levels, from "Pass Through" over "Basic Check" to "Strict".
Before one can start using BareED as a TIS-620 supporting text editor, the corresponding fonts and keymap are required from Lyndon Hill's website.
Please note, though, that BareED's author, Joerg van de Loo, doesn't speak Thai himself. Therefore he suggests to refer to Lyndon Hill's website or contact him directly in case of questions about using a TIS-620 compatible Amiga environment, including using e-mail. (snx)

Devoloping environment: AmiDevCpp 0.9.6 (beta version)
The development environment AmiDevCpp by Heinz-Raphael Reinke is now available in version 0.9.6. With the IDE you can create programs for MS Windows, AmigaOS, AmigaOS 4, MorphOS and AROS/x86.
In the new version was the Dev-C++ environment replaced by Wx-Dev-C++ which is an advancement of Dev-C++. The new IDE is mainly faster and has fewer bugs as its predecessor and offers a WxWidgets form designer for Windows developers.
The cross compiler and SDKs are compared to version 0.9.5 without changes so that they should work. However, the author suggests to see the whole still as a beta version as there have been no more comprehensive tests yet.
Furthermore, there are more example projects in the examples directory for several platforms. Parts of the documentation in the help directory were revised, too.

Some videos and a report on the Amiga Meeting in Bad Bramstedt
The organisers of the Amiga Meeting Nord recorded some videos with a webcam, showing all presentations and lectures respectively. Those videos can be downloaded at meeting2006.morphosi.net. The organisers thank Robin Hueskes, who provides the webspace on this web page. The users are asked to use the torrents if possible instead of downloading the videos directly, to keep the the load for the Hueskes webserver within bearable limits.
When it comes to a conclusion Thorsten Mampel of the Amiga Club Hamburg says: "It was great fun for everybody. We thank all the participants and especially the developers of the amazing presentations. We especially thank Nobbie for the great service and the barrel of free beer ;-)"
Guido Mersmann has published a report on the Amiga Meeting. However, according to him the report was not complete, but simply reports on the way the meeting went from his point of view. The author hopes you enjoy your reading. (cg) (Translation: iw)

Online MP3 and ring tone generator from mods
Under the title link, Chris Hodges is making available a small web service, which transforms a selection of around 1200 tracker modules into high quality MP3's on-the-fly (with UADE and Lame).
Furthermore, an IMA-ADPCM-compressed Mono-RIFF-WAV file can be generated from the first minute of a mod, which is suited, for instance, for ring tone for cellular phones (which cannot play back MP3's, for example).
Suggestions and feedback are asked for. (snx) (Translation: cad)

AmigaOS 4: Synergy client AmiSynergyc 2.0
Douglas McLaughlin's Synergy client for AmigaOS 4 has experienced an update to version 2.0. Using Synergy, a keyboard and a mouse can be used for multiple computers of a network (each computer needs its own monitor, however).
Changes for version 2.0:
- Almost completely re-written
- Upgraded to use the current synergy protocol, v1.3
- All mouse and keyboard OS operations now work properly
- Now a commodity
- No need for a reset handler, the server can now detect when a client drops offline
- Mouse pointer blanking is much more system friendly now. No longer loses the pointer image if you switch back to the Amiga mouse when the synergy mouse is offscreen
You can find Synergy server software for Windows, Mac OS and Unix at SourceForge.net.

Unlike originally reported, there is no new version of Remote Desktop Client available. Apparently there was a mistake when updating the website.

a1k.org: Change of server and domain move

that we moved the site to a new server. The forum of
a1k.org is reachable at a1k.amiga-world.de currently. During the week hopefully
the old domain will be switched, too.
Also I'd like to mention tat my public email address apex[@]a1k.org is not reachable since about 2 months
(one of the old provider's issues). Those who send mail to taht address didn't got a failure reply, but the messages were never
passed to my account. I aplolgy for any inconvenience and hope the address will work again from next week on.

Individual Computers: Clone-A - a reimplementation of the Amiga custom chips
In an exclusive interview with the British print magazine Total Amiga, which
will be published in the next issue, Jens Schönfeld of Individual Computers reveals his latest project: Since about one year
Jens Schönfeld and Oliver Achten are working on an exact reproduction of the Amiga chip set.
The project, currently codenamed 'Clone-A', will be publically shown at the AmiWest
(21st October, USA) for the first time: to demonstrate the compatibilty of that solutionn, a normal
A500 will be shown which original custom chips are replaced with Clone-A prototypes. Visitors are invited to bring their own A-500 to the show to
test Clone-A.
The next issue of Total Amiga will be released after the AmiWest, therefore the editors provide a pdf with excerpts of the interview
now which covers the project, its history, the curent development state and detailed photos. (cg) (Translation: ub)

AmigaOS 4: Cinepaint, Gimp, vim and Xfce for Cygnix (X11)
Edgar Schwan has published ports of the picture editing softwares Cinepaint 0.21.1 and Gimp 1.2.5, of the text editor vim 7.0 and of the desktop manager Xfce 3.8.16 for AmigaOS. The programs require the X11-enviroment Cygnix.
These publishings are alpha versions that means that not all functions are already available. The development of the programs was stopped because of a lack of time. But the author hopes that the software could be interesting for some users in this level, too.

Filesystem: Ext2FS 0.24 with write support without debug output
With version 0.24, Marek Szyprowski has now released the first public version of his driver Ext2FS, which includes write support without debug information. Ext2FS makes working with the Second Extended FileSystem possible under MorphOS and AmigaOS 3.x.
The write support was tested for more than a year, in which hundreds of gigabytes of data was transferred. Here, the filesystem worked very stable and never led to serious damages to the drive structure. However, please read the disclaimer before you use Ext2FS.

Flayer makes Flash-Videos usable for Amiga Users
Robert William's ARexx-Skript Flayer makes flash videos, which are offered for example from the popular video hoster youtube.com, usable for users of AmigaOS. The script searches within the indicated website for the url of the video and saves it at the local hard disk, wherefrom it can be watched with MPlayer.
The offered first beta release needs AWeb and MPlayer (experimental preview 3 or newer) and doesn't support streaming yet. Because it is a pure ARexx-script, theoretically Flayer should work under Morphos as well. (cg) (Translation: tz)

PPCNUX: Detailed Efika report
The online magazine PPCNUX has visited bplan at the special fair 'EBV TechTrends 2006' and presents
a detailed and pictured English report..
The report showsboth sides of the Efika board and mentions a maximim power consumtion of 1,08 watt for the MPC5200B-SoC, a theoretical maximum
1,5 watts for each memory chip ans peak values of below 5 watts for the hard disk. The
IDE traffic speed is rated at 8 MB/s (stable) and the OpenFirmware is iproved with programable power on times and usb media boot boot support.
Further it is said that DVD replay in full resolution is possible at 92% processor load.
Until a mass production starts, which will lead to price as low as 99 US $, the Efika is estimated to be sold at
249 Euro. Orders in the 4 digits magnitude range are confirmed already. 400 pcs are ordered by Freescale alone, the half of those will
go to developers for free.
MorphOS is said to be able to run on any 32 Bit PowerPC system - and since the main developer of MorphOS, Ralph Schmidt, belongs to bplan
the availability of MorphOS for the Efika rather a political decision.
regarding the Pegasos boards further production runs are no problem, all components are available as RoHS compliant parts. Other cpu combinations are possible,
but due to economic reasons not followed yet.
Asked regarding the release of a new SmartFirmware version bplan minded the big number of required tests and the risk that users may risk to render their boards unusable.

Routeplanner: AmiATLAS status report
Press release: At the moment a complete rework/update of the different travel guides is in progress. Further there is an extension of the information about parks with better maps for a more precise route calculation. Of course the emphasis lies on the German map because of the much higher demand. The network of streets is uptodate including recently opened highway sections.
If someone wishes his residence to be included (even the smallest places!) in the map just write a mail with the name of the location, Geo-coordinates and information on the street connections (description and the exact distance to other locations).
As always we are searching for helpers for data entering! Lists of coordinates are always welcome... Alternatively also helpers for the entering of the data into the maps themself.
There are also possibilities for the view and print of data in various formats like HTML or PDF instead of AmigaGuide.

IRC-client: WookieChat 2.4 beta 5 (update)
James Carroll has published another beta version of his MUI based IRC client WookieChat for AmigaOS 3/4. Changes since the last version:
- Automatic reconnection when disconnected from a server. Configurable
delay inbetween reconnection attempts, and maximum number of retrys
- Added an ignore function and a nice GUI for it. This ignore function
supports wildcards and can optionally ignore Text/CTCP/DCC
- You can now choose to automatically connect to servers upon startup, and
the server selection window can be hidden since it isnt required
- Channel names displayed in the listview can be joined by double clicking
on them
- Wookie no longer removes leading spaces from outgoing text. This is quite
useful when pasting programming source code in dev channels and you want
to keep the indentation for readability
- When transferring tiny files within 1 second, the entry in the dcc windows
are no longer stuck on "transferring" and are now able to be removed from
the list
- Outgoing DCC RESUME seems to be working better
- Previously, you couldnt copy text to the clipboard when text was being added
to the channel display. I made it pause while selecting text, but internal
functions were preventing text from being copied to the clipboard when you
let go of the mouse button. I have now corrected this. So its now possible
to copy text to the clipboard in a busy channel.
Update: (03.10.2006, 14:15, cg)
Meanwhile beta 5 can be downloaded.

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
Wow, what a month! There are all kinds of interesting goings-on in the
Amiga community to report to you this time round.
Number one on most people's list would have to be Bill McEwen agreeing
to answer 25 questions on Amiga.org. Whatever else you may think of
Bill, that marks him as a brave man. :-) Actually, the questions are
all quite good and the answers are certainly informative. Equally
informative are some of the comments to the posting. It's worth your
time to explore all this material.
We can't include the session here. It's much too large, and we do not
have the right to do so. So pop over to the amiga.org site and check
it out. Then try to decide what it all means. We're still working on
that part at "Amiga Update"
The tone of the answers is certainly upbeat, with much promise for the
future. The difficult part with that is we've heard this sort of thing
before and we're still waiting. There are indications that Amiga Inc.
has learned some hard lessons and is trying to recover from problems
of the past. We hope that is truly the case, believe it probably is,
but do wonder if they can muster the resources to really move forward.
It should be possible and there are some signs they are doing so - see
a couple of the stories below on recent actions, for example. To use
our favorite phrase from recent years when talking about Amiga Inc.
"Time Will Tell".
There are two things in particular from the questions and answers that
specially concern us. According to Bill, Amiga Inc. is working on
Amiga OS 5.0 at the same time Hyperion is working on Amiga OS 4.0. We
are completely unsure what that will eventually mean for users,
assuming both make it to market, but we hope there's some coordination
between the two at least. And what does this do for the viability of
Hyperion's work? It is clear the two companies aren't exactly happy
with each other. To use another old phrase, this could be a train
wreck.
The second thing that bothers us is the take some people have on the
change from Amiga Washington to Amiga Delaware. It's apparent that
move is regarded by some as a shell game designed to avoid debt. It
can easily be interpreted that way. True or not, the perception can be
enough to cause problems when trying to strike new deals. We hope this
is manageable.
So what's your take on Bill's answers? Are we listening to a visionary
or just a dreamer? At this point, we're not sure. We've regarded Bill
as a visionary in the past, and would like to be proven right at some
point - and soon. We've lived on dreams long enough.

Bill McEwen made himself available on Amiga.org to answer 25
questions collected by the website. We cannot reproduce the session
here, but we can suggest - strongly - that you read the questions and
answers - and the comments - at:
http://www.amiga.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=6955&com_id=
53338&com_rootid=53336&com_mode=flat&com_order=0
We did grab the first question to get you started:
1. Why now? Amiga Inc pretty much divorced itself from Classics and
OS4 over a year ago, exemplified by the simple indication on your
website that for anything OS4 related, interested parties need to
contact Hyperion. Several parties have tried to contact you for
licensing reasons and reported a total lack of response (not a "no"
response, just no response at all). Now, out of the blue, you show
interest again. What has changed, and if you are planning on
supporting something other than the AmigaDE again, how can we know
you're not going to just shut the door once more?
Bill McEwen -- It is obvious to me that from this question and the
others that are like it, that we have done a very poor job in
communicating about Amiga. Amiga has always been interested in the
operating system, and this includes OS 4, and beyond. Our plans have
always been to produce, create, develop, market, enhance, sell and
support the operating system. The goal of Amiga, as stated in our
first public appearance, is to create a scalable, embeddable, media-
centric operating system that can unify digital devices that include
cell phones, set top boxes, computers, and any other digital device
that the OS can support. We did not think that this vision was
achievable with the Amiga OS 3.1, so we began the development of a new
Operating System or Digital Environment, and started toward those
steps with the partnership with the Tao Group and built on top of
their Intent platform. Our goal and what we have been up to is still
the same, and I hope that as I answer more of your questions and if
you would allow me to also leave some editorial responses at the end
of the questions. I believe that we will all be on the same path
toward the future.
With regard to the hardware question, I can only state that I have
responded to ?every? query that has been sent. So that we do not have
vendors appear and disappear leaving the end user holding equipment
that can not be supported, Amiga asks a series of questions of the
person who has made the request. I can tell you that with the
exception of two groups, nobody has ever returned with acceptable
answers. There are a great many people who dearly want to help, and
they really want to see and produce new hardware, but several times we
have seen answers where they are relying on some unknown event or
friends with credit cards to be able to support the effort. This is
not acceptable, and we have to locate those companies or individuals
that have the correct supply chain and understanding of how to create
and support hardware. Of course it is always easier to make a blanket
announcement that Amiga ?never? responds, or I never heard back from
them.
{Bill McEwen also posted a clarification later at
http://www.amiga.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=6970

20 September, 2006
Judging from some of the e-mails we received, the recent comments by
the Amiga Inc. management seem to have created confusion with respect
to the development and availability of Amiga OS 4.0.
As managing partner of Hyperion Entertainment VOF, I would like to
take this opportunity to assure our customers that development of
Amiga OS 4.0 is entirely in Hyperion's hand alone and that the Amiga
OS 4.0 development team is proceeding very well indeed as may become
obvious during the upcoming shows in Italy and Sacramento, U.S.A.
There are no development hold-ups of any kind and we are in fact
anticipating an initial "final release candidate" by the end of 2006
provided suitable hardware is available for sale at that time. You may
recall the fact that Hyperion held back on the official release of
Amiga OS 4.0 in 2005 in order to have it coincide with the
availability of suitable target hardware.
Several third party hardware manufacturers have indicated that they
are working on a wide range of different suitable PPC hardware
platforms. We will leave it to them to communicate about these
projects in due time.
This extra time has given the OS 4 development team the opportunity to
not only polish the final product even more but to incorporate very
substantial and modern functionality such as the new, extremely
reliable, modern and powerful memory subsystem in conjunction with new
yet to be revealed functionality.
We will specifically not comment on any legal issues as raised by
Amiga Inc. management as these matters are finally and at our explicit
and repeated request being handled by both parties' respective
lawfirms and we find it highly inappropriate to publically comment on
these matters in the meanwhile. Suffice it to say that some statements
by Amiga Inc. were clearly in contradiction with the views held by
Hyperion's attorneys both on a legal and on a factual level.
We thank you for your patience and the continued support of the Amiga
OS 4.0 project which we are dedicated to complete as soon as possible.
Evert Carton
Managing partner

Besides the OS4 item above, Hyperion made the following information
available during a chat at the Amiga Big Bash 4: Amiga Big Bash and
Retro in England:
Q:It is rather obvious that OS4 would not appear in the nearest six
months or so. Do they plan to release next update/updates?
A: Our current target is end of the year, provided of course that
hardware is available. To that end, we are working with hardware
manufacturers, but as usual, we're not doing their press releases, so
we let them come forth with their projects
A: End of the year is the projected release date for OS 4, for real
this time ;-)
Another comment on the release date: We've made a lot of progress
recenlty, so we *are* pretty sure that it will be December.

4 September, 2006
It's been a while since last time, but it doesn't mean we haven't done
anything in the meantime. Following is an update on the newest stuff
happening over at Aminet.net.
The Aminet Wiki
Aminet has its own Wiki now: at http://wiki.aminet.net you'll find
manuals, FAQs, information about the team and Aminet's history as well
as our changelogs, todo lists and bug 'database'. The section covering
Aminet's usage urgently needs more info added though: if you'd like to
help out with creating a nice user manual covering archive formats,
the tools required to handle them, various ways of transfering
archives from a PC to the Amiga, using an FTP client etc. - get in
touch with us, please.
Translating the Wiki into other languages is planned, but our
ressources are somewhat limited and there are lots of things to do -
so this might take a while.
New directories
Several new directories have been created, amongst them misc/os, which
is intended for operating systems and updates. The first uploads to
this directory are "Amiga Minix", an open source Unix like operating
system for Amiga 500, 2000 and 3000 computers and the final m68k-amiga
distribution of OpenBSD. The former was kindly provided by Thomas
Unger, while the latter is a mirror of ftp.planetmirror.com and was
moved to Aminet because OpenBSD-Amiga is discontinued und slowly gets
removed from the official BSD-mirrors.
A complete list of the new directories:
dev/lib (static libraries)
game/edit (game editors)
game/strat (strategy games)
misc/os (Operating systems and updates)
pix/icon (PNG icons)
We already started to move files into these directories, if you
stumble across further packages that should be moved, don't hesitate
to tell us. Thanks a lot to James Jacobs for both suggesting game/edit
as well as providing a complete list of files that should be moved in
there.
More mirrors
Three new mirrors have been added (de5.aminet.net, se.aminet.net and
dk.aminet.net). For more info about mirrors and who to thank for the
various ones, see http://wiki.aminet.net/Mirrors. Aminet now consists
of seven mirrors - with more coming up. As the question has been
brought up several times now: Yes, we do accept big files, a CD ISO
shouldn't be a problem. For anything significantly bigger than 80-100
MB we'd appreciate it if you would notify us up front though.
New filetypes supported
We now accept PDF documents (you don't have to put them into an
archive anymore) as well as music and video files in an Ogg container,
the most popular ones being Ogg Vorbis and Ogg Theora. In addition we
encourage you to use the open OGG formats rather than the proprietary
MPEG (MP3, MPEG1/2) formats which often come with patent and license
issues.
As we're still getting DMS uploads occasionally: Please note that
Aminet does not support DMS. If you need to upload a disk image,
convert it to ADF first. We accept both plain ADF files aswell as
zipped ADF (.adz).
A reminder - server abuse
Recently we encountered postings on various forums where people
announced they would download the whole Aminet repository, others
explained that they already did it or gave instructions how this can
be accomplished easily. Apparently, we really need to address this
issue.
Downloading the whole Aminet repository is considered abuse. No ifs,
buts or whens - end users are not entitled to run personal mirrors.
Aminet has a total size of more than 32 GB right now, individual users
downloading that much data from our servers just for the sake of
having their own local copy are not just acting rather impolite, they
are actually eating up resources that somebody has to pay for.
Aminet isn't going away anytime soon. It's going to celebrate its 15th
birthday soon, and we do have the resources available to make sure
that there are going to be quite a few more birthday parties. We also
have a bunch of 100% mirrors up and going, so there are no excuses
really.
If you really feel like leeching, go download Google - compared to
Aminet, that whole WWW thing is a relative newcomer and might be gone
any day now.
As usual, an extensive change log can be found at:
http://wiki.aminet.net/Changelog. If you want to get in touch with us,
either drop us a mail at aminet@aminet.net or join our IRC channel
#aminet on irc.amigaworld.net. We *love* feedback, feature requests
and complaints. Honestly.

13 September, 2006
This is the final update on the Amy05 design prior to [Amiga Big
Bash 4].
One of the biggest changes to the Amy05 design from our first
released specification is the addition of the .AMD Geod(TM) CS5536
companion device. For Project Prometheus/Amy'05 this becomes Amy?s
Southbridge. This is the low cost Southbridge device from AMD that
been in many of the newspapers. It?s used in the $100 'One Laptop per
child' system, and in many AMD Geode(TM) embedded designs. It?s a well
proven design and AMD continues to refine all the little details to
get the most out of the design. Its extremely well supported, and its
great to have a working relationship with the AMD people, we take much
pride in this.
What?s the Geod(TM) Southbridge mean to the Amiga community? Software
wise the opening of many new doors, and features. For example, one
feature built in is the ?USB keyboard?, making USB keyboards easy to
install and use.
Hardware wise this device provides the following features to Amy05:
AC97 Codec interface,
A single channel IDE port,
An additional 16C550 UART,
Real time Clock and CMOS RAM
Additional USB 2.0 ports,
PC 82XX legacy timers.
There are additional features to this device but we have only
highlighted the features utilized by Amy05.
This is the other component of the Kryptos sound system. It is a low
cost high performance solution that will in the future, allow for a
lower cost design by fully utilizing the USB and ATA interfaces of
this device. Also in future Troika designs, will be able to
incorporate, many more hardware features not as yet implemented, into
future Amy designs.
The CS5536 interfaces to the TSI107 via the 66 MHz PCI bus interface
for maximum performance. The 66 MHz PCI bus connects to the 33 MHz PCI
bus using a PLX technology PCI 6150 bridge device. The PCI 6150 makes
it easier to connect riser cards to the system without violating PCI
bus loading rules, an improvement over previous designs.
A side effect of increasing the system bus to 66 MHz was the need for
some glue logic, normally quite boring but it did provide potential
for a 'Geekport interface' to be easily added. Now referred to as the
Amy Geekport.
The aim of this interface was to put some of the fun back into home
computing. For too long now if you wanted to add a custom device to
your computer, it was too complicated. By providing a simple 8 bit
wide interface that connects directly to the PPC local bus it is once
again possible to create homebrew devices and connect them to your
computer, just like in the good old 8-bit days.
The interface is memory mapped, provides a basic I/O port, can
generate interrupts and provides user defined I/O. Application notes
and sample designs will be available at product launch.
As a final note, the planned board for display at the show will be a
'developer' prototype. She?s rough around the edges, and we have had
?issues? with making our logos look great like we wished. This is the
first release which will be made in a limited quantity for hardware
testing/OS4 development. There will be bugs to iron out and some
improvements will be made, when this process is complete, the
necessary changes will be added into the consumer version, which will
then be released.
This is the reason we ask for some feedback on the design, there are
limited opportunities for changes to the final design. Rest-assured,
we will not be making any drastic changes to the system.
*AMD Geod(TM) CS5536 is a registered trademark of AMD

The release of the A600 accelerator and the A500 version of the IDE

contract work that will keep us busy for the next few weeks. Please
refrain from requesting any of these products. The production of the
new A1200 CPU slot connectors is going according to plan. The new
products Catweasel MK2 anniversary edition and the A600 memory

are widely used on the scene of I.T. world.
It was a long time since the moment that technology innovation left
italian peninsula.
Now it was born again a new Hi-Tech challenge, and this is due to the
efforts in co-operation and synergy lead by three dynamic italian
firms: Alternative Holding Group Srl., Soft3 e Virtual Works, which
started together a partnership in order to complete the first one of
many projects, lots of these still in development and evolving.
The results of their co-operation it is a compact, versatile, and

...but the web site also wants to target general internet related
news, and also have some news about special events / happenings /
products that are of common interest for computer interested people.
We also run an IRC channel #AmigaWeb @ EFnet. You are most welcome!
User registration and forum is functionable and it is possible to
register at the moment.
Still, progress is done in coding towards the version 1 of the site
code, as we still consider the existing code to be in a beta version.
I have the honour of wishing all of my Amiga companions a warm welcome
to the new site.

Due to a movement to a new server our homepages were only partly
accessible the last days.
Unfortunately the onlineshop also was also nearly a week offline.
But now the switch to new servers has been completed and the Amiga
Future page and all APC&TCP pages are accessible again.
Also the onlineshop is ready again.
Because of this there have been also failures in the processing of
mails. If someone has put an order and hasn't received a confirmation
mail please get in contact with us.
At this point we want to remind you that the switch of the BBoAH pages
hasn't finished yet. Many users link directly to the German/English
starting pages. Soon they won't exist anymore. The only valid domain
is http://software.amigafuture.de.

Because of personal reasons, Ian Chapman, the founder of the Big Book
of Amiga Hardware, has given his seven years old compedium in new
hands.
Amiga Future is proud to announce to become the new maintainer of the
BBoAH. The compendium will be the same as known, but only a few
optical adjustments.
In future, the BBoAH will further exist in two languages - english and
german.
Unfortunately, Ian Chapman is not able to free the well known URL
"http://Amiga-hardware.com" for the BBoAH in the Future. Because of
this, the BBoAH ONLY can be reach at http://hardware.amigafuture.de.
Please update your bookmarks!
The Amiga Future team also will work on, to open the (licensed) driver
downloads page again, which have to be closed since end last year.
NOTICE: For submissions only use the following Email:
hardware@amigafuture.de
About Ian:
After nearly 8 years of running the Big Book of Amiga Hardware,
I've decided it's time for me to retire from maintaining the site. The
reasons are many and varied, but personal. The project started in
January 1999 and since then has grown to be what it is today. This
wouldn't have been possible without the hundreds of contributors that
took their time to help out, many of who sent hundreds of photographs
over the years.
Effective from today, The Big Book of Amiga Hardware will be
officially maintained by 'Amiga Future' in conjunction with Mario
Misic. Mario has maintained the German mirror for several years. They
will continue to maintain the site in a similar style with some
modifications but will hopefully be able to give the project more time
than I could. In addition they hope to translate the entire site into
German. Please give them your support.
The new official page is http://hardware.amigafuture.de as I am unable
(for practical reasons) to transfer the ownership of the domain.
Please note, that this site (http://www.amiga-hardware.com) will still
remain available on the web but will not be updated. All submissions
should now be sent to the email address hardware@amigafuture.de.
Thanks again to everybody who has helped out.
"So long and thanks for all the fish."
Ian.
