Game developer received warning for Backbone game with smurf characters
On January 1st, Mikael 'Hipoonios' Persson did release his game Smurf Rescue created with Backbone under a Freeware licence. Five days ago he received an e-Mail from the law office Gevers, which in behalf of the rightholder of the smurfs named Studio Peyo requested to immediately shut down the website and to pay 500 Euro of lawyer’s fees. A three days deadline was set. Otherwise further steps will be taken.

According to Persson he does not check his e-mails on regular basis. Therefore he got the claim - sent to the mail account specified as contact address for the domain hipooniosamigasite.org - after the expiration of the deadline. Meanwhile he also received a letter which included a claim of 2000 Euro. Persson has published screenshots of parts of his e-mail traffic as well as of the admission of guilt which he is supposed to sign:

Persson's version of the details is extremely fragmentary. Currently it is not possible to reconstruct the complete communication between him and the law office Gevers. If his version of the details will be confirmed, at least according to German law the questionable warning may be legally skilful - although it suggests that the law office might use warnings as business model.

Because recently several Amiga games have been offered or announced which use Intellectual Property of big media companies ("Danger Mouse", "Evil Minions"), the developers as a precaution should reconsider it - there is not any kind of legal protection for non-commercial products. Event: "Amiga 30 Years" in Amsterdam (27.06.2015)
In 2015 the Amiga celebrates its 30th anniversary. Initially an anniversary celebration was planned in the Heinz Nixdorf Forum, in Paderborn (Germany) which was supposed to be take place simultaneously with a similar event in USA. But Jens Schönfeld (Individual Computers) and his team have very little free time so the planning is not in an advanced stage.

For an event on June 27th in Amsterdam, a team of Dutch Amiga users have invited notable guests: Dave Haynie, David Pleasance (Commodore UK) as well as some former games developers (Christian Bartsch, István Fábián, Franck Sauer) have been announced.

The Kryoflux team will also attend the event and create disk images of disks brought along for free. Additionally there will be an exhibition as well as further interesting surprises which will be announced during the next weeks and months.

The team of the PPC-extension Ultimate PPC will be there as well and present its hardware - still it is not clear, what will be presented: On the website of the event it was written "the brand new Amiga expansion card released by its creators" while a post in a forum offers the prospect: "Talk to the developers, look at the card, touch it, smell it." Announcement: Sqrxz 3 as collector's edition in a box
After Sqrxz and Sqrxz 2, Frank "phx" Wille has now ported the third part of the Jump'n Run series to the Amiga. Due to the experiences with his own game Solid Gold, Sqrxz' engine was completely rewritten: it now runs with 50 instead of 25 frames per second and in contrast to the Windows and Linux version now also offers level passwords.

Both predecessors are being converted to the new engine aswell, additionally a port of the fourth episode is in progress. The games will be released in a limited collector's edition with profesionally printed disks and a traditional game box. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Graphics software: PersonalPaint 7.3a (AmigaOS 3/4)
A-EON has released a free update of the 8-Bit graphics software Personal Paint which fixes some minor bugs. The version for AmigaOS 4 can be purchased in the Amistore or updated (download and installation of the Amistore application required). The m68k-port can be purchased on ppaint.com. The update is available for registered customers in the download section of A-EON.

Changes in version 7.3a:
  • PPFM_Mem.c libs/#?/mem.c: Fix 68k only memguard hits die to incorrect size on releasing memory. NB: If the code is taget to 3.x and above in the longer term this custom code can be replaced with AllocVec() calls.
  • PPFM_FileIO.c: No longer saves a corrupt alternate image when saving thumbnail icons.
  • PPaint/PP_Prefs.c: Add ASL Screen Mode Requester to allow user to choose bestmode on first startup. If mode in Startup_1 is 0xFFFFFFFF the Workbench mode will be tried first then if not supported by PPaint an ASL requester will open and offer suitable modes.
  • PPaint/PP_Prefs.c: The PRINTSYS settings are now clamped to min / max legal values rather than throwing an error, so that saving preferences with no valid printer setup, doesn't create an unloadable Startup_*.set
  • Change default setting in startup mode requester to 256 colours
  • PPaint/PP_Menu.c: Autmatically save both environments on first exit if the mode requester was accepted.
  • Make68kMake.rexx: Add -fomit-frame-pointer to CFLAGS. Fixed crash in editing stencil due to register a5 being clobbered.
  • libs/req/req_messages.c: A test for the new true screen mode caused TOGGLE objects to be highlighted (inverse image) on both mouse down and mouse up, giving the appearance that they weren't toggling when on a non truescreen mode. Fixed.
  • PPFM_GfxFill.c: The TmpRas buffer was allocated via the custom CreateBitmap function this worked on AGA/ECS and AmigaOS4 but when run on other RTG systems, the buffer was of an incorrect memory type. Now allocated via AllocateRaster when 'SafeDisplay' is set. Fixes freehand and polygon fill tools on RTG systems.

AmigaOS 4 / MorphOS: E-UAE PowerPC JIT 1.0.0
Álmos Rajnai's integration of a just-in-time-compiler in the Amiga emulator E-UAE for PowerPC-systems is no longer a beta version but version 1.0.0 and available for AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS (as well as for Mac OS X and Linux).

Additionally under the title link he has suggested that his JIT-implementation - different from the x86-JIT - might be easily adapted to other processor architecturs like ARM. If he himself is going to do it, he does not know - he has developed the JIT-compiler for so many years that it would be time for something new and different.

Assembler and Linker: vasm 1.7b and vlink 0.15
Frank Wille has released updates of the modular assembler vasm and of the corresponding linker vlink.

Changes in vasm 1.7b:
  • Fixed stack overflow and crash when using recursively defined symbols. Bug was present since introducing new 128-bit and float expressions in 1.7
  • Issue a warning when a symbol was declared as external, but nowhere referenced in the source
  • m68k: Do not optimize MOVEM to MOVEA or MOVE when predecrement or postincrement addressing mode is used with a register from the list
  • m68k: The Devpac directive OPT X (xdebug) works now as expected for hunk-format object files and for TOS executables
  • m68k: In Devpac-compatibility mode (-devpac) the __LK symbol is predefined and reflects the output file type: 0 = Atari executable, 3 = Amiga object, 4 = Amiga executable, 99 = all others which are unknown to Devpac
  • m68k: MOVEM #list,-(An) must not reverse the bit mask automatically, but expect an already reversed one
  • m68k: BTST #n,#m is illegal
  • m68k: LEA (d32,An),Am translation to MOVE.L/ADD.L stopped working with V1.6c. Fixed again
  • ARM: TEQP, TSTP, CMNP and CMPP were missing for AA2
  • ARM: Fixed recognition of addressing mode and condition codes with instructions written in upper case
  • 6502: New option -c02 to enable 65C02 instructions
  • mot-syntax: In PhxAss- and Devpac-compatibility mode only the directives which are known by the emulated assembler are supported
  • mot-syntax: RS, SO and FO offset directives use an aligned offset in Devpac-compatibility mode or when the -align option is given
  • std-syntax: The optional third argument of .balign/.p2align/.align is now really supported and defines a maximum number of padding bytes
  • std-syntax: New directives: .balignw, .balignl, .p2alignw, .p2alignl, .zero, .swbeg
  • std-syntax: .word should rather define 16-bit than 32-bit constants
  • std-syntax: .local followed by .comm should be the same as .lcomm
  • oldstyle-syntax: Fixed recognizion of .equ/.eq/.set/.mac/.macro with -dotdir option
  • hunk-output: New option -linedebug automatically generates a LINE DEBUG hunk for the input source
  • aout-output: Always generate an external reference to a weak symbol, even when the symbol is defined
  • elf-output: Always generate an external reference to a weak symbol, even when the symbol is defined.
Changes in vlink 0.15:
  • (ados/ehf) Support for SAS/C style indexed libraries (HUNK_LIB)
  • (ados/ehf) -Csasc is accepted to build a table with SAS/C constructors and destructors. It looks for functions named __STI_... and __STD_...
  • (tos) New option -tos-textbased to write symbol offsets which are based on the text section (MonST-comaptible)
  • (tos) text and data section size in the header must not be odd
  • (aoutmint) text and data section size in the header must not be odd

Gloom Deluxe Total Conversion: "Did IT come from the Desert?"
Inspired by Cinemaware's announcement to release the port of the Mega Drive game It Came From The Desert next year, "nittamituaki" has created a "Total Conversion" of the FPS-classic Gloom Deluxe. The Mega Drive version of the classic has very little in common with the original adventure game - now rather it is a actual shooter.

You can install nittamituaki's Total Conversion (Youtube video) by installing first Gloom Deluxe on harddrive. Afterwards the original files will be replaced by the files from the "Did IT come from the Desert?"-download. The game requires a 68020-processor and about 1,8 MB ChipRAM. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Changes:
  • Full localisation, SoundBankster is now provided with french and english locale

  • Improved loop handling, added x2 and /2 buttons

AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition: Updated BootFloppy for Amiga 3000 computers
Press release:
Brussels, December 24, 2014

Much to Hyperion Entertainments regret it was noticed that the bootfloppy originally shipped with AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition for Amiga 1200, 3000 and 4000 computers contains a defective KickLayout file, which makes it impossible to boot on an Amiga 3000 computer. In order to remedy this situation, registered customers of AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition for classic Amiga computers may download an updated bootfloppy as ADF image from the download area.

Alternatively, experienced users may follow the manual instructions on the Hyperion support forum.

Hyperion Entertainment apologises for any inconvenience caused by this and wishes a merry christmas to all its customers! (cg) (Translation: cg)
