Retro-Gaming: WHDLoad 18.1
Using WHDLoad you can install games, scene demos and intros from cracking groups on your harddisk that were not compatible with anything but floppy disks. In version 18.1 an update check was added:
- New: update check added: when a network connection is available
WHDLoad will check via a HTTP request if a newer version
exists on the WHDLoad webpage for the used Slave and WHDLoad,
supports a proxy with optional basic authentication via option
Proxy/K, to disable any network access the option NoNetwork/S
can be used
uses sha256 implementation by Robert Leffmann, thanks!
- Changed: dumping loaded files using bit #31 set in the disk number via
resload_DiskLoad will now use the offset in ExpMem in the
created file name, also the written files will go through the
file cache to avoid recurring switches to the operating system

AROS: PasteQuick 0.41, Lyapunov, LazSokoban
Marcus Sackrow has compiled three little Free-Pascal programmes for AROS/x86. Additional to the game LazSokoban and a representation of Ljapunow-fractals, using PasteQuick it is possible to copy text from the Clipboard to pastebin.com and to get back the generated Pastebin-link. The login function of PasteQuick is not supported by the AROS-version.

MorphOS: Support of other CPU-architecture planned
Three years ago the MorphOS-team for the first time thought about a change of the CPU-architecture. During the discussion about MorphOS on the X5000, the question was asked again on Morphzone.info, which answered Mark 'Bigfoot' Olsen :
"When MorphOS gets ported to AMD64, we will not be supporting Macs. AMD64 Macs have all the wrong hardware for that to make any sense. When such a time does come, expect us to support one desktop motherboard (with one family of CPUs and GPUs) and one laptop. We'll of course make sure it's hardware that's actually available one way or another."
Mark 'Bigfoot' Olsen also confirmed that on a long-term basis it is planned to support different processor architectures. The only reasonable options are ARM and AMD64. Which one then finally will be support still was not decided. Olsen pointed out to his statement from November 2014. There he explained all the problems occuring when changing the CPU.

Hyperion: statement about the company's current situation
In February, Hyperion was declared bankrupt by a Belgian judge, but two months later the judgement got reversed again. The company has now released a statement detailing their view on the matter and announcing an internal reorganization.
Press release: Contrary to some news items posted on certain websites, Hyperion Entertainment CVBA is not in a state of bankruptcy. Due to an unfortunate set of cirucmstances, the company was temporally listed as "bankrupt" despite the fact that the conditions for bankruptcy were never met and that in the eyes of the law, the company was never bankrupt.
Development of AmigaOS 4 (which recently culminated in the release of AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition) is and has been ongoing albeit that some resources had to be directed away to support the upcoming hardware of A-EON Technology.
The company is in the process of reorganizing itself by opening up its shareholdership and appointing a new exective director. More details on that will follow when all legal formalities are behind us.
Quite a few AmigaOS 4 supporters have approached us with the question what they can do to help us accelerate development of AmigaOS 4.2.
To that we have a very simple answer: please upgrade all your AmigaOS 4 capable hardware to AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition.
Not only will AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition be used as a base-line for future updates, you will also help us to accelerate AmigaOS 4.2 development!
Those of you who have other concrete ideas, we welcome to contact us.
We appreciate your support and we look forward to meet you at any of the upcoming celebrations of the Amiga's 30th birthday!

AROS: 68k-Distribution Aros Vision 2.9.2 / Other versions planned
Version 2.9.2 of the AROS/68k-distribution Aros Vision provided by Olaf Schönweiß (screenshot) includes updates of some programms as well as a new screensaver.
In addition, in future there will be different versions of the distribution. To this version in future a "RTG" will be added. Aros Vision ECS (for real 68k-hardware and FPGA-reconstructions) and Aros Vision X86 (screenshots: EdiSyn, Antyriad) are in development.
The last mentioned distribution is based on the Windows-hosted version of AROS which makes it easier to launch it because you do not have to install it. Disadvantage: So far network and audio support is not included. Other platforms are planned.
Changes of version 2.9.2:
- New structure
- Netsurf updated
- Free Pascal updated
- Theme can be changed in the menu
- MUI-classes updated
- Hollywood-plugins updated
- AppStore-client updated
- Should run faster now
- New: Screensaver

Benchmarks: Warp 3D SI on the dem Sam460 and the X1000
During the last few days, AmigaOS 4 users started to collect benchmark results for the recently released commercial Warp 3D drivers for Radeon HD graphic cards. The results are collected and presented on amigans.net, an older result using a Sam440 and the onboard Radeon Mobility chip was provided by Alain Thellier (Wazp 3D) back in 2013.
Two benchmarks are performed, with the exception of Thelliers older test the results were all recorded using the Final Edition of AmigaOS 4.1.
- Quake 3 Timedemo 1: using Hugues 'HunoPPC' Nouvels ioquake3-Portierung (Ioquake3.lha), a resolution of 1280x1024, these Settings and MiniGL 2.20
- Cow 3D (a Warp 3D benchmark from Alain Thellier): When running this, the Buffers should be enabled using the 'b' key, to make sure the Frames don't have to be recalculated by the CPU constantly and you're only benchmarking the graphics performance.
Below you can see the benchmark results published so far, benchmarks with older Radeon graphic cards are not available currently. The listed values mean 'frames displayed per second' (FPS), so the higher the value, the better the result:
Editor's note: In some cases, the users didn't list average values, but FPS ranges. For the sake of simplicity, we used the higher value of the two - the difference is neglegible anyway. The listed values were all provided by AmigaOS 4 users, Amiga-News staff has no means of verifying them. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Web-finding: The contract between Amiga Corp. and Atari, 1983
At atarimuseum.com, a copy as well as scans of the contract are available which concluded Amiga Corp. and Atari. The startup Amiga urgently required additional financial resources to finish its development of the prototype named "Lorraine". Atari would secure its rights to the chips developed by Amiga to use them in its next computer generation.
The published excerpts concentrates on the planned features of Amigas' computer. Some interesting details are hidden in the contract: That the computer should be able to read Apple-disks and their texts. Additionally the programming languages "Lorraine BASIC" and FORTH should be included in the delivery of the computer equipped with 128 KB.

Self-made project: Wifi Joystick Adapter 1.0
A Croatian Amiga user has made an adapter which wireless transfers the input of any joystick to the computer (Youtube video, photographs: 1, 2). The receiver is powered by the computer, the transmitter has to be powered via an USB-cable (e.g. a recharger cable for a mobile phone).
For the wireless communication a microcontroller ATMega8 as well as a NRF24L01+ and as development environment Arduino were used. According to the developer there is no delay while playing. He estimates the loss of time is less than 2 milliseconds.
Vurrently the adapter does not work with mice. The author supposes that the reason is the higher amount of data transferred. He will try to solve the problem but so far does not have any approach to a solutions.

Trademark recycling: Android smartphones from 'Commodore Business Machines'
According to the Italian Wikipedia (automated translation) the "Commodore" trademark has been acquired by a Massimo Canigiani in 2014. If this is true or what "acquired" actually means is currently unknown to us. According to the EU trademark database, the relevant "Commodore" marks are still owned by Dutch Commodore Holdings B.V. There is a Commodore mark registered in Italy, but it's still assigned to ESCOM.
As Commodore Holdings is still defending the mark aggressively - the organisator of a Crowdfunding effort to reproduce the C64 II cases got a written warning recently - it's safe to assume the situation will become more clear soon.
At least Canigiani seems to be quite confident: He already incorporated a company called "Commodore Business Machines Ltd." in England. Using the official website and a Facebook page he's already advertising his first product: an Android based smartphone sporting a Commodore 'chickenhead' logo. (cg) (Translation: cg)

AROS: AEROS for Pi beta 10 and beta 8 (full version for Raspberry Pi 1)
Pascal Papara's Linux-based AROS-distribution AEROS for the Raspberry Pi is available for registered users as beta version 10 (changes see below , video of the previous version).
In celebration of Easter beta version 8 which was released in November is available as unlimited version for the Raspberry Pi 1 on IndieGO!-Appstore. That means, the "lx"-command for starting Linux-applications out of AROS is included.
Beta version 10 was adapted to Raspberry Pi 2. On the previous model this version only works with 512 MB RAM (but slowly). If there is less memory available, single parts of the distribution does not work.
Changelog:
- Updated UAE4all2 with AROS/68k kickstart replacement
- Added Quake 3 demo (works only on Pi with 512 MB RAM)
- Added Gimp (very very sluggish on a Pi 1)
- USB-sticks are now auto-mounted when you attach them, no need anymore to run a Linux file manager first
- Added EmulationStation (you need to boot into command line to run it)
- Changed memory split and reduced memory size for AROS (this can be modified by the user) in order to get Quake working with less swapping

Forum: Moo Bunny announces preliminary closure (Update)
After 18 years, Moo Bunny announced closure. The basically unmoderated forum had been appreciated especially by people who considered other websites to be biased in favour of only one of the different Amiga operating systems. Due to contuinued abuse of the granted freedom, John Shepard closed down Moo Bunny yesterday.
Update: (07:40, 06.04.15, snx)
In another message directed towards the Amiga section, John Shepard does not only repeat the final cause for the forum's closure, but also hints that Moo Bunny might be reactivated in the future:
"
Update: (07:40, 06.04.15, snx)
"Moo Bunny Amiga Section [...] is still valuable enough that someone just tried to steal it. I think that means it's also valuable enough to not stay down forever." (snx)

AmigaOS 4: Commercial Warp3D driver for Radeon-HD cards
A-EON has announced the availability of Warp 3D drivers for für Radeon-HD graphic cards. They are not the drivers developed by the Frieden-brothers for Radeon-HD cards with Evergreen-chipset (just like the Radeon-HD 5450, built in the X1000 as standard) and announced for a long time, but the drivers developed by Hans de Ruiter and for Radeon cards with Southern Island-chipset.
The driver is named Warp 3D-SI and is ecklusively distributed via Amigakit's App-Store Amistore for 33 Euro. Additional to the Final Edition of AmigaOS 4.1, it requires the 2D graphic driver RadeonHD which is separately distributed as well as MiniGL 2.20.
Features of the driver:
- supports Radeon HD 7750-7970 series graphics cards (excluding the Radeon HD 7790), Radeon R7 250X/265 (excluding R7 250), Radeon R9 270/270X/280/280X
- Supports larger textures (up to 16384x16384 memory permitting)
- Performance is less dependent on resolution than previous drivers, including rendering at HD resolutions
- Submits vertices to the GPU via vertex buffers rather than directly in the command stream (one of the bottlenecks of the old Radeon drivers)
- Uses the RadeonHD_RM.resource for VRAM allocation, providing more efficient memory management than own system
- Accumulates small vertex arrays into larger buffers to provide faster performance where lots of tiny render operations are performed
- Doesn't lock the entire graphics system between 3D_LockHardware() / W3D_UnlockHardware(), so an application or game crash is less likely to freeze the entire system
Simultaneously with the new Warp3D-drivers, updates for both versions of the 2D-driver RadeonHD have been released on Amistore. The updates to version 1.4 and 2.7 are free available for registered users.
According to Amigakit, the work on "Warp3D Evergreen" driver is ongoing and making good progress.

Amiga Games Inc. no longer distributing classic Amiga Games (Update)
Since September 2012 Amiga Inc. and later on Amiga Games Inc. have been distributing classic Amiga games in
Blackberrys App Store. At the start of the project, "more then 300 titles" were promised, plans to support various mobile platforms were announced.
By now, all Amiga titles have been removed from the App Store: just a few days ago, there were still several dozen games available - this was initially reduced to Impossamole being for sale, in the mentime this game has been removed aswell, the vendor "Amiga" is not listed anymore.
The reason for this change is currently unknown, though the timing - right at the beginning of a new month - might be an indication that Amiga has to fullfull contractual obligations. Back in February, Michael Battilana from Cloanto had revealed that Amiga Inc. do no longer own any rights to Kickstart or Workbench and that they had to obtain a license from Cloanto for their activities on the Blackberry platform.
Update: (02.04.2015, 19:45, cg)
In the meantime, the last remaining game has been removed from the shop, the vendor "Amiga" is not listed anymore. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Ralph Schmidt: Commercial distribution of Cyberstorm-ROMs inadmissible (update)
According to Ralph Schmidt in German comment on Amiga-News, he still owns the rights to the drivers, ROMs and utilities distributed by Phase 5 or DCE for their Amiga hardware. The company DCE never has been right holder of the software and therefore is not allowed to grant a licence for commercial sale.
Some years ago, he gave his permission to offer the software for download on phase5.a1k.org. He also agreed with the distribution on Aminet, where the drivers from now on are available as well.
With his comment, Schmidt responds to the press release of Pascal Papara, who on Tuesday announced the commercial distribution of the der ROMs in his App-Store IndieGo!. Yesterday Ralph Schmidt did express his view in an English-language forum but Papara held his view that DCE has exlcusive rights on it and therefore have a valid licence.
The archives available on phase5.a1k.org and Aminet only contains updates for the ROMs used in a Cyberstom PPC. They cannot be used as ROM-file for UAE. On request of Amiga-News, Ralph Schmidt clarified that he is not going to release full ROM-images.
Update: (26.03.2015, 18:30, cg)
Meanwhile Pascal Papara has confirmed, that he has stopped distributing the ROMs. Thus the ROMs that are required for the Cyberstorm emulation are not legally available. (cg) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOS 4.1: Updates will be only available for Final Edition
In his AmiWest presentation, Steven Solie intimated it, now other AmigaOS 4 developers confirmed it: In future updates will be only available for the "Final Edition" of AmigaOS. Therefore changes are happening within the infrastructure.
According to Simon 'Rigo' Archer the only exception are critical updates applicable to older versions of AmigaOS 4.1. As Archer and Andy 'broadblues' Broad explained, "the development team is unable to upkeep multiple versions of the OS, and test all possible scenarios".

Emulation: Legal source of supply for Cyberstorm-ROM-file
If you are going to use AmigaOS 4.1 "Final Edition" with an emulator, that requires this PowerPC operating system, the Kickstart-ROM and the Workbench of AmigaOS 3.1 as well as the accelerator board ROM of the CyberStorm PPC.
If you do not own a Cyberstorm PPC, nevertheless you can use AmigaOS 4 legally in the emulation: In consultation with the rightholder, DCE, the ROM-file can be purchased in the IndieGO!-Appstore for the symbolic price of EUR 1. On request, Pascal Papara will bear the costs for purchasers of the computer AresOne as well as of the distributions AEROS R3 and Aminux (USB-Stick version).

GUI-Toolkit for Hollywood: First demo version of cross-platform HGui
HGui is a GUI-system developed with Hollywood, which in contrast to the Amiga-specific MUI Royale would be available for all platforms supported by Hollywood. The development has been almost finished, a first demo now is available (download site).
According to the author Fabio "Allanon" Falcucci, he thinks about a commercial release. Therefore he has released this demo to get some feedback on this question. If he will get sufficient financial support, Falcucci will write tutorials and a "comprehensive developer guide".
Two different releases are planned: As applet and as source code, both versions would include tutorials and developer guide. The current level of development the author has described as "usable and stable". He needs to "complete some planned features and a couple of missing classes".
The features of his GUI-Toolkits:
General features
- Object Oriented Programming
- Flexible and multi-layered skin system
- Easy of use
- Fast
- Scalable (tuning the cache system and the theme)
- Since HGui does not depend on any system specific command/library all developed projects can be compiled for any system supported by Hollywood, your GUIs will be the same on every platform, exactly the same.
Windows system
- Each window you create supports the following events:
- OnClose
- OnMove
- OnActivate
- OnDeactivate
- OnHide
- OnShow
- OnSize
- User definable minimum and maximum sizes
- Automatic control of the window's order
- Methods to control/edit on the fly the created windows
- Various background type supported
- Special windows to build up quickly progress indicator and/or messages for long operations.
- Window's menu (not the ones available with Hollywood but a custom one that allow you to include any gadget type into it.
- Functions to find window objects by name, by Hollywood ID, and to check if a window exists or not.
- Ability to attach hotkeys to any window to execute specific tasks when a keypress occurs.
Gadgets system
- Supported gadget classes
- Box
- Vertical Divider
- Horizontal Divider
- Label
- Group (Generic, Radio, Check)
- Button
- Switch
- Scrollbar (Vertical/Horizontal)
- Slider (Vertical/Horizontal)
- ProgressBar
- Knob
- Text (for user input)
- ListView
- TreeView
- DropDown
- Image
- Virtual Area
- Planned gadget classes
- Ability to switch the cache system on or off
- On: each gadget state will be cached, faster but more memory required
- Off: each gadget state will be rendered directly, slower but with a lower memory footprint.
- Each gadget can be skinned individually
- Each gadget class can be skinned globally
- Support for icons inside gadgets with custom alignment and text adjustment
- Flying tips for some gadgets
- Sounds on some actions (OnOver, OnOut, OnPushed, OnDown)
- Supported actions:
- OnPushed
- OnDown
- OnOver
- OnOut
- OnDrop
- OnDropOut
- Some classes can have additional actions
- Functions to search buttons by their names
- Methods to control and modify on the fly existing gadgets
- Gadgets drag and drop (planned)
- Ability to attach a right-mouse action or a pop up menu (planned)
Layout system
- Gadgets can be arranged using the MUI concept, you define some gadgets that will be grouped inside another gadget, this way your GUI is represented by a tree where the tree root is a special gadget called 'rootGadget' already created for you when a window is created.
- Supported layout are:
- When you define child gadgets you can define the following properties:
- Gadget weights (percentual variable, percentual fixed, pixel variable, pixel fixed)
- Borders (top, bottom, left, right) from the father gadget
- Gap between childs in pixel
What's missing/needs more love

App Store: Update of indieGO!-client for all systems
The Hollywood-based client for Pascal Papara's App Store "indieGO!" has been updated (screenshot). It is divided into two parts: The App Store-Browser and the download manager. Using the download manager it is possible to pause downloads and continiue them after several days.
The client now works with screen solutions less than 800x600 pixels (z.B. EEEPC701) and much faster as well. According to Papara currently there is much debug output, so this can be still improved. The speed of the download manager was doubled.
The detailed changes:
- Refactoring and optimization of the libServer module
- Submit Bug Report : now reports if there was error submitting the reports
- Change Mail Address : FIXED a bug that was not accepting the user's input
- Many optimization a faster response in many time-critical sections
This option can be disabled with the preference -> speedboost = 0
- Added preference switch
- Added pointer behaviours (busy mouse pointer for long operations)
- Added the possibility to close the category requester with the ESC key
- Font size reduced automatically in app name and app description if needed
to let it fit in its available space. (magorium)
- Now categories and items difference is more evident thanks to an overlay
image on the category icons (see picture). (magorium)
- Now the AppStore recognize if a previous session has not closed properly
and ask to the user if he wish to submit a bug report with the previous
session's log file, no additional informations from the user are required. (magorium)
- Speed up of the app details window opening
- download speed is now twice as fast
Until now developers of commercial applications have had to pay a store fee of ten percent of the selling price. Developers who have registered after March 1st 2015 have to pay twelve percent. The ten most "successful" developers - including developers of Freeware software - monthly will earn a gift coupon of 10 Euro.

Crowdfunding: US-American celebration for Amiga 30th anniversary via Kickstarter
On the occasion of Amiga 30th anniversary - on July 23rd 1985 it was presented for the first time - in Computer History Museum in Mountain View (California) a big party will take place.
It is planned: a panel discussion with former Amiga developers Dale Luck, RJ Mical, Dave Needle and Carl Sassenrath; a banquet with feature speakers Colin Proudfoot (ex Commodore UK), Mike Battilana (Cloanto) and Trevor Dickinson (A-EON) as well as the presentation of a new, longer trailer of Viva Amiga. Additionally there will be a little exhibition of Amiga-"artefacts", presenting the original Amiga prototype and all the following Amiga models.
In order to finance the event, the organizers are going to collect 20.000 US-Dollar via Kickstarter. If you want to support the project, you can choose between nine different payments: starting with 10 USD (the donator will be mentioned on the website and during the event) and ending with 5.000 USD (complete VIP-programm, diverse merchandising products as well as an AmigaOne X1000).
