PDF viewer: RNOPDF for AmigaOS 3/4 and MorphOS
From his family of RNO-applications (e.g. the FTP(S) client RNOXFER or the DTP application RNOPublisher), the developer 'jPV^RNO' has updated the PDF viewer 'RNOPDF' to version 1.4. Detailed changes:
- Exported images can be sharpened
- Improved exporting to custom sizes
- Added the WINSIZE tooltype/argument
- Localization support
- Fixed pathless file arguments
- Other small fixes
RNOPDF is available for AmigaOS 3/4 and MorphOS as well as for Windows and Mac.
The RNOPDF version for non-RTG Amigas will be not updated since it is a separate branch and still includes the changes.
On our request, the author told that now he is going to update für RNOXfer which basically already is finished. He is about to write a tutorial since many features users demand have been implemeted yet. In any case the ext version of RNOXfer will support SFTP.
The suthor appreciate any kind of feedback and support.

SDL port for MorphOS: OpenTyrian
Tyrian is a vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up developed by Eclipse Software and published by Epic MegaGames in 1995. The game was originally released as shareware for PC-compatible DOS, with graphics created on an Amiga 1200 (see Wikipedia entry). 'BeWorld' has released an SDL implementation of the open source port 'OpenTyrian' for MorphOS.
On an AmigaOne X5000/20 the port runs fine. The SDL libraries are required. (dr)

Mod-Player: HippoPlayer 2.47
After 21 years in June the developer Kari-Pekka Koljonen had released the first update of his Amiga-MOD player HippoPlayer as new beta version. Two days ago on GitHub he has released the source code of the new version 2.47 and simultaneosly on Aminet the corresponding executable file. In this version new exotic music formats are supported, favorite modules feature added, enhanced kickstart 1.3
support and some fixes provided. Check out the details below. Detailed changes:
- New fixes:
- Fixed two serious crash bugs introduced in v2.46b. When starting to play the next module (especially by double clicking) Hippo could get confused
and crash. These problems were very likely to happen especially on OS 3.2.
- Tooltip fixes for buttons *Del*, *Pr*. Also increase tooltip delay a little bit.
- Fix the case where HiP is given modules without absolute path via command line or via icon launch (eg. *DefIcons*), and the added files can't be opened. Now works.
- Another relative vs. absolute path fix. When adding files so that the filerequester path is relative it could be that Hippo was not able to open the added files. That is, a file was added with path "Modules/DrAwesome/mod.bud peculiar" instead of "dh0:Modules/DrAwesome/mod.bud peculiar".
- The default unzip command in prefs was changed to *c:unzip >nil: -jo "%s"*, this allows opening zipped modules where the module is within a subdirectory. Previously such modules would not be found from the zip file.
- In Prefs the MPEGA settings were reported to display garbage at times, I wasn't able to reproduce this but some additional checks were added,
maybe they will help.
- New (very old) known bugs:
- VisualPrefs_ tool can be used to adjust window bottom and top border, and window and screen title bar heights. Hippo can get confused and displays some extra vertical space below the window title bar when these are adjusted.
- New supported music formats:
- Medley Sound and Future Player
- The author of these and the superb Imploder themes Paul van der Valk has recently passed away. His sound was truly unique!
- Future Player replayer adapted from Wanted Team EaglePlayer sources.
- Medley Sound replayer ripped from Imploder 4.
- Ben Daglish: Also adapted from EaglePlayer sources by Wanted Team.
- DeliTracker Custom:
- There are hundreds of these modules available, with varying quality. Many modules work fine but some behave badly. They may do illegal memory accesses or crash speactacularly. The same happens also when played with DeliTracker.
- One version of _Lemmings_ tries to do file accesses to load separate sample files, this is not supporte by Hippo and will probably crash.
- A few modules do not get recognized as the important bits are not close enough to the start of the file.
- Minor issue: Some modules display the subsong range in the titlebar so that the first song is #2 instead of #1.
- Beathoven Synthesizer
- Game Music Creator (Jumping Jack'Son!)
- Digital Mugician 1
- PumaTracker
- SidMon 2 (SidMon 1 is already supported)
- Delta Music 1 (Delta Music 2 is already supported)
- New features:
- Prefs_ option for toggling button tooltips on and off. By default it is on.
- Support for _gzipped_ archives. You need to have a working gzip-application in path. (This was once supported but was removed at some point.)
- Recursive subdirectory scan when adding modules is now supported on kickstart 1.3. Previously only the top level files of the selected directories were added. This has only worked on kickstart 2.0 or newer until now, due to the usage of a kickstart 2.0 DOS-library specific function. This function was reimplemented using available kick 1.3 methods.
- New ARexx commands *CHOOSEPREV* and *CHOOSENEXT*. These work similarly as when the user presses arrow up and down to choose a module in the list. *GET VERS* command returns the app version. *GET VOLU* returns the current volume setting.
- Favorite modules! You can now right click on a module to favorite it. Favorite modules are displayed in bold font. To view the favorites, there's a new button on top of the filebox slider gadget to click. It switches between normal listview and favorites view. Favorites are automatically saved after the user has been idle for a while, or when exiting the program, to file "S:HippoFavorites.prg". This is a normal module program file. To enable this feature toggle the _Favorite modules_ switch on the _General_ subpage in prefs. This feature probably doesn't make any sense if you are using floppies.

Atoms: A re-implementation of the Amiga game using web technologies
Already three years ago the programmer Thomas Pike reported on his website about the history and realization of his project: The re-implementation of the PD game 'Atoms' (YouTube video), originally released by Tom Kuhn, which was based on a Atari ST game, using web technologies. Say: The game can be played in the browser.
His re-implementation has some differences from the original: for example, the chain reactions and explosions are immediately visually visible. Likewise, in its implementation you can play against a computer opponent. On the other hand, the "elevator intromusic" present in the original is missing here.
After a three-year break, the author has found some time to implement the change suggested by a comment on his game: The creation of an alternative color scheme to allow people with red-green vision problems to enjoy the game. When asked by Amiga-News, the author told us that in principle he also had network support on the agenda, but that this would involve a considerable amount of work, so that a realization was rather unlikely. He does not exclude a realization of the music support, however, he is dependent on an mp3 file due to the limitations of the web technologies. However, he lacks both the original music file and a qualitatively adequate mp3 variant. Reason enough for us to start a short search. We found the required information and finally data in a blog entry of the website Computer Related Nonsense. Just as quickly, the author then added that music component to his implementation today.
Since HTML5 and CSS were used for its implementation, a modern browser is required to play. Consequently, all our tests to get the game running in a browser under AmigaOS 4.1 failed (IBrowse, NetSurf, Odyssey). Only under MorphOS with Wayfarer the game could be started successfully (OWB also failed).
The source code of the project is available on the associated GitHub page. (dr)

Webstore for different Amiga adapters
Andreas Winkler has established a little webstore for different Amiga adapters. He wrote:
"I recently set up a small webshop for my various Amiga products, which can be reached under the domain Taiwanrider.com. This step results from the increasingly complicated business and selling conditions on ebay.com, where my adapters are relatively popular. The webshop allows for a more straightforward and better focused selling environment.
Items for sale include my popular adapters for the Amiga 500's expansion port, flexible CPU relocators, and various floppy drive adapters.
Shipping is possible worldwide. However, there are currently some restrictions due to the international shipping situation. As soon as changes in shipping options are made by Taiwan Post, I will adjust this in the webshop." (dr)

AmigaOS 4: FTP-Server ZitaFTP 1.25
Hans de Ruiter has released version 1.25 of his commercial FTP server 'ZitaFTP' which now also is available for Windows. He wrote:
"Yes, it's been a long time coming, and it's finally here! I first hinted at there being a Windows version of ZitaFTP over a year ago. I'm a little nervous about releasing it (always am with new code), but it's ready to go out into the wild.
The Windows version already has a feature that the Amiga version doesn't: the UI runs in its own window; no external browser needed. This isn't possible on AmigaOS because it doesn't have a webview gadget (at least, not a modern one).
AmigaOS users, you haven't been forgotten. There's a new version out for you too. It has all of the fixes and enhancements made over the last few months (excluding the webview).
The biggest change that you'll notice, is a new "Submit Feedback" button in the lower right corner of the UI. It's also there in the SysTray/docky menu. Simply right-click on the ZitaFTP server icon in the SysTray (or dock, on AmigaOS), and select "Submit Feedback." Please use it if you find a bug, or have a suggestion on how to make ZitaFTP even better."
The new version can be tested 30 days for free. The author also has published a YouTube-Video in which he explains the changes in this version. (dr)

New print magazine: 'ZZAP! Amiga' (English)
On the associated Patreon page a support campaign is currently running, where you can contribute to the publication of the new quarterly 'ZZAP! Amiga' magazine, which will cover the latest Amiga games and much more.
For a monthly contribution of 2,50 Euro you will get the latest issue in pdf format, for 5,50 or 6,50 Euro (plus 6 Euro shipping) you will get the digital and printed issue.
The issues will have 60 pages in A5 size and will be full color. There will be special A5 binders to keep them in, which will be available on the Fusionretrobooks website. Depending on the success of the magazine, it may be published bi-monthly, and next year there could also be an annual issue.
Plans are to launch the first issue of the new magazine in mid-September. Bullfrog-developer Glenn Corpes Glenn (Populous, Magic Carpet and Dungeon Keeper) will talk about his Amiga experiences, Francois Lionet will set up an AMOS programming corner and David Pleasance will have a regular Amiga anecdotes slot. Amiga QuickBasic Compiler
On GitHub the developer Günter Bartsch has released the source code as well a first Early Preview 0.7.0 alpha1 of his Amiga QuickBasic Compiler and descibes it as "an experiment in alternate history: what AmigaBASIC could have looked like, had it been developed further tailored to the Amiga OS."
Improvements over AmigaBASIC include:
- Advanced type system (including UDTs and Pointers, see below)
- Support for non-static functions and subs (enables recursion)
- Module support (similar to UNITs in TurboPascal, with full type safety and dependencies)
- Modern syntax inspired by FreeBASIC and VisualBASIC
- True native 68k compiler

Deniser: Open Source replacement for Denise chip
On GitHub, Martin 'endofexclusive' Åberg has established a resposity called 'Deniser' for building and programming a Denise chip replacement.
Denise is the Amiga custom chip responsible for most of the graphic related tasks such as bitplane display, palette registers, smooth scrolling, hardware sprites, flexible screen object priority, collision detection and more. In the Amiga, Denise operates in concert with the Agnus and Paula. Schematic, BOM and more information can be found in a separate PDF file. Status of the project:
- Known to work:
- Schematic, PCB layout and BOM
- Use in Amiga A500 with ECS Agnus (PAL)
- Workbench, Deluxe Paint, demos
- Extra Half Brite (EHB) mode
- OCS features
- Things that probably work:
- Use in Amiga A1000, A2000 and A3000
- Use with OCS Agnus
- Collision detection
- Hold-and-modify (HAM) mode
- Genlock
- Known limitations:
- Some sprites appear above and below the display window.
- No NTSC

RTG driver: P96 v3.1.1
In July Individual Computers updated its graphics cards driver P96 to version 3.1.0. Version 3.1.1 now fixes some bugs introduced with this version:
- the mouse pointer might have been "lost" in certain cases - fixed.
- RTG card's memory organization improved for higher blitter usage rate, increasing overall speed experience if enough memory is available.
- P96Mode now ghosts disabled modes and resolutions, which makes them easier to spot.
- If new settings are created, P96Mode now populates the available modes with VESA default values. It is no longer necessary to create them all manually. As soon as the modes are attached to a board, P96 checks the validity of them.
- Memory requirements of the planar boards are now checked against the planar memory size, which may be different from the chunky size.
- For the S3 Virge in 8-bit stream-processor enabled modes, the leftmost pixel column was missing; fixed.

- Worked around an issue that prevented further popups from showing up if the main window was resized while a popup was up
- Reload button state wasn't properly refreshed when switching between tabs
- Fixed a crash and status bar issues when browsing page history for cached pages
- Certificate viewer may now be localized

Accelerator board: Returning the Buffees for rework
In the middle of June the developers reported that a second batch of 60 beta Buffees was ordered which now arrived. They "managed to power them up."
However, new problems were found, as the developers further report:
"While we did manage to boot them up and verify that some of the issues we had with the alpha were fixed, we also managed to introduce a couple of more. And a third issue that doesn’t really hurt us too much, but it is a pain:
- 1. the GreenPAK was mounted wrong; in their infintie wisdom, Dialog chose to reverse the pinout between packages. Same number of pins. Completely different order. One is clockwise. One is counter clockwise. Oh my god. This is on me, I should have checked had I thought to, but I’ve never had a part where the pin outs reversed, so this is a new one for me. Oh well.
- 2. There are three power rails on the PMIC; AC, USB and BAT. The USB and AC can both take really high voltages, but have a minimum of 4.5V which worried me as these old 68000 machines aren’t getting any younger and neither are their power supplies. Getting a solid 5V is rare, so I chose to use the BAT rail instead which operated nicely down to about 2.7V. Except TI didn’t make this rail “default on” and needs a push button. What the hell? Anyway, easier fix than #1, just need to short PB_IN to PGOOD.
- 3. Parts are disappearing and one of them was the 16MB Flash. We had to go with an 8MB one or “not at all”. So … this will be interesting.
So, they’re off for some rework and hopefully we get them back by the end of next week. I have to say these shipping delays and parts shortages all on top of dealing with COVID and a new fourth wave is so stressful. But I digress. At least we’re still under-budget.
We’ve made excelent progress on Buffee despite all these set backs and have developed a new method of handing the weird world of the variable length 68000 instruction and it’s dasterdly sidekick, the extended addressing mode. This has been the one last issue with PJIT that I had yet to solve.
The current method was to bake in the complex decode logic into every instruction that uses it – and for an addressing mode that’s not nearly as often used as say register direct or simple load/store operations, it was eating up a huge amount of the code base, since the “inline” nature of PJIT meant copying the same 20-30 ARM instructions for each opcode. Not efficient! And not fast either, the instruction routinely had to dig back into 68K memory and to do that, it would need to compute the 68K program code since we don’t always track it and … well, it was a mess.
So of course the answer was staring me in the face all the time. Our old model shows all these NOP’s filling the operand-gaps between opcodes – so why not simply shuffle them around and have all the literals and extended addressing modes get handled BEFORE we execute the actual instruction. Most 68000 opcodes are a single word and PJIT must either compile these to a single, inline ARM instruction or branch to a subroutine to handle more complex operations. But there are many 68000 opcodes that take considerably more than one word and PJIT can handle these by having special operators for each word within the whole instruction." (dr)

Games announcements: Morci, Kung Fu Master, Green Beret, Project Quest
Jump'n run 'Morci' (video) has been teased for a while, now it has also got a name. The title, realized with the Scorpion Engine, requires AGA and some Fast RAM.
Kung Fu Master (Videos: 1, 2) comes from the creators of Turbo Sprint and is supposed to be a conversion of the arcade classic of the same name.
'Green Beret' aka 'Rush'n Attack' is another arcade classic. The Amiga conversion is developed with the Scorpion Engine.
Project Quest comes from the makers of the announced tactical shooter Project Horizon and uses its engine, but offers a fantasy setting. A demo version of the game is already available for download. The developers are asking for feedback on whether this side project should also be developed further. (cg) (Translation: bb)

Magazine archive: Amiga Future Archive DVD #5
Press release: The Amiga Future Archive DVD #5 has been released. It is a pressed DVD9 with over 6 GByte of data. Even if it should be no problem in principle, make sure that your drive can read a DVD9. Of course you also need a PDF viewer.
On the Amiga Future Archive DVD #5 you can find the following issues of Amiga Future as PDF:
- Deutsch: Amiga Future Issue 11-142
- Englisch: Amiga Future Issue 67-142
Issues 11 to 26 have been scanned. Unfortunately, the quality here is not exactly perfect. All other issues are PDFs in very high quality. Issue 11 was the first German Amiga Future issue that was published. Issue 67 was the first English issue of Amiga Future. So there are over 20 years of Amiga Future history on the DVD.
There is no update possibility from previous version of the Amiga Future Archive DVD. Please have understanding for this.

UnRAR 6.02 for all Amiga systems
Marcin Labenski has ported the source code of UnRAR 6.0.7 to all Amiga systems and provides the following features:
- support all the basic unrar commands and switches, including listing, unpacking (all or selected items), printing and testing archive files
- support national characters in archive name, names of files and directories in the archive, passwords, comments and list files
- support restoring information about file modification date, owner and group
- support unpacking symbolic links and hard links stored in archives
- support unpacking multi-volume and SFX archives
- can read switches from configuration file s:rar.conf or RAR environment variable
- large files support (>4GiB) on MorphOS and AmigsOS4
- support AmigaOS localization via locale.library
As the author wrote, "there are no special requirements for MorphOS and AmigaOS4. It should work on any system provided that it has a relatively fresh version of the operating system (I test on MorphOS 3.12 and AmigaOS 4.1 FE Update 1). AROS version requires i386 and ABI-v0. Classic AmigaOS version requires a system with:
- CPU Motorola 68000 - FPU is not required
- Kickstart 2.04 or higher
- ixemul V48 (http://aminet.net/package/util/libs/ixemul-48.0)
- 4MB RAM (UnRAR requires 2.6MB on its own)
Exact memory utilization depends on the size of compressed files. For instance my test archive with one 2.0GB file in it needs 32MB of RAM to unpack."
The source code of his port is available on GitHub. (dr)

Final Amiga port of 'Metal Gear' (MSX)
In February 2021 announced by a videos, musician, DJ and coder 'Hoffman' has released his final version of his Amiga port of 'Metal Gear', originally developed for MSX home computers. Version 1.1 fixes some bugs and compatibility issues and has the following features:
- Code ported from Z80 to 68000 assembly by Hoffman
- Gameplay adjusted to work at full 50hz/60hz
- No slow-downs or sprite flicker
- Multiple game modes
- English Remix Fan Translation
- Original European Version
- Original Japanese Version
- New Spanish Translation by Akira
- Enhanced Amiga Soundtrack and SFX by Hoffman
- Optional emulated MSX / PSG Music and SFX
- Full support for CD32 gamepad for keyboard-less gameplay
- Additional character graphics by Toni Galvez
- All new ending / credits section
- For any Amiga with 512kb Chip Ram + 512k Other Ram
- Bootable disk image for low spec Amigas
- WHDLoad installer by Psygore
The original ProTracker modules can be also downloaded from his website. About the history of his project he wrote:
"This project started out as a curiosity which got WAY out of hand. Back in November 2020, after 8 months of coronavirus lock-down, I found myself looking at a GitHub repo by Manual Pazos and wondering really just how hard would it be to port this to the Amiga. As a test, I looked at converting some of the tile graphics and within a couple of days built some tools in C# to deal with that. Next I moved onto the map / room data and quickly built a renderer on the Amiga which could draw every room from the game. By now I was done for, I couldn't stop, I had to see just how far I could take the project. Each completed step kept pushing me to do the next and now here we are, a complete and full port of Metal Gear running on all Amigas!
There is more to be said about the development process (like spending weeks building a fully dynamic Amiga sprite multiplexer only to throw it all away) but I think I'll save that for a series of blog posts. For now, I hope you enjoy this game as much as I've enjoyed, and endured, putting it
together."

Accelerator board for A1200: Tsunami 1230
Additional to his 'A1100' project, Miguel Fides has built a new accelerator board for the A1200 called Tsunami 1230. According to the his own statement "most compatible acelerator for the A1200 since the Blizzard serie" can be plugged in without any modification of the A1200 case and has the following specifications:
- 68EC030 QFP CPU at 42MHZ.
- 64MByte FastRAM.
- 68882 FPU footprint ready and also selectable clock for overclocking the FPU.
- External expansion port for future upgrades (secret stuff, can’t tell)
- Clockport port (RTC only).
- Compatible with any A1200 motherboard revision.
- A1100 friendly of course.
A recently published YouTube video compares the Tsuanami 1230 with the Blizzard 1230 by means of benchmarks and games. This is a non-commercial project and you can express your interest for a first batch. (dr)

Memory game: MeMO 3.14
Simone 'saimo' Bevilacqua has released an update of his memory game MeMO. His game is based on the classic memory card game but in his port two payers can simultaneously play for getting the best highscore. MeMO requires a 68020 processor and the ECS graphic chip. Changes of this release:
- Adapted to Amiga CD³²: added saving through nonvolatile.library when writing to disk fails; allowed pausing, aborting and name entering by means of the joypad; added CD ISO image to distro packages.
- Reworked controls (see manual).
- Added controls information to pause screen.
- Added cards numbers to the back of face down cards (which helps with matching cards).
- Straightened cards corners, to match better the overall sharp look of graphics.
- Fixed bug that caused the EXTRA JOYSTICK option to be highlighted shortly after returning from the "about" screen.
- Made several optimizations.
- Adapted to and built against latest custom framework (which makes startup and cleanup more robust and has a couple of bugfixes).
- Fixed/improved/added outer antialiasing of graphics on all cards (trying to stay faithful to the original design).
- Touched up a few cards.
- Reduced and partly eliminated bass notes clicking.
- Made various other minor changes.
- Improved manual.

Jump'n Run for Vampire V4: SonicVamped 1 and 2
'SonicVamped' is a port of the 2013 Android version of SEGA's Sonic The Hedgehog 1 & 2 to AmigaOS optimised for Vampire V4 computer. The games ported by Artur "Arti" Jarosik and "Quetzal" also run under Vampire V2 accelerator boards but not at full speed.
According to the developers the Amiga port features "many speed improvements including AMMX, direct SAGA draw with triple buffer and direct SAGA audio implementation. All of that made it possible to run at stable 60 fps gameplay on The Vampire V4.". A Vampire V4 Release 6 at least is required but a Release 7 - which still is not publicly available - for getting all the features is recommended.
For installation the Sonic 1 or 2 Unpack.bat must be executed on Windows 8 or 10 and then the SonicVamped folder copied to the SD/CF card. (dr)

AmigaOS 4/MorphOS: Controlling Sonos speakers (update)
Michael Rupp, well-known by his Workbench simulation TAWS now has started a new project: Learning the programming language Hollywood.
Specifically, he is currently developing an application for AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS for controlling Sonos speaker.
The programm is called 'SonosController' and will have the following features:
- listing your speakers with the info of the currently playing song, with an icon that is downloaded from the speaker itself
- subscription of the speaker's UPnP events (that was probably the hardest one to crack, man-o-man), it means that the controller gets a notification if the Sonos system receives a command from some other controller (f.e. from your mobile or on some other computer) or directly from the speaker's buttons
- sending control commands:
- Play
- Pause
- Next
- Back
- Jump to time index
- Volume
- Mute
- Shuffle
- Repeat (everything, current song)
- Crossfade
- display of the current song's title, artist, and album on the selected speaker
- download and display of the album cover if possible (f.e. if embedded into the playing MP3 file)
- local cache for album covers for better performance
- local cache can be emptied in the Preferences dialog
- listing the selected speaker's current queue
- playing a song by clicking an entry in the queue
- listing the Sonos favourites incl. starting one
- listing the Sonos playlists incl. starting one (normal oder shuffled)
- listing TuneIn's saved radio stations incl. starting one
- listing TuneIn's saved radio shows incl. starting one
- browsing your music library incl. starting songs, albums, etc. (normal or shuffled)
- searching your music library by search string and search type (artist, album, composer, genre, song or imported playlist)
- the last x search strings are save, whereas x can be configured in the Preferences (0 - max. 50)
- saved search strings can be emptied in the Preferences dialog
According to the author, he "absolutely wanted to have an Amiga exclusive feature in it, something that the original Sonos app doesn't feature:
- Exporting playlists in M3U format. These can be put into your music library's "playlists" folder to be re-imported into Sonos, thus enabling you to kind of backup and restore your playlists.
All these features already have been implemented and currently are bug fixed. In future versions the following features will be added:
- grouping / ungrouping of speakers
- integration of music services such as Spotify, etc.
- modifying the current queue, adding songs (or whole playlists), remove songs, change song order
- save a queue as a new playlist
- modifying playlists (change, rename, delete, etc.)
- sleep timer functionality
- alarms functionality
- Ringho notifications
Regarding his experience with Hollywood, Rupp told us:
"I got into the new syntax very quickly, especially because the documentation is simply exemplary and full of sample code. Also, you can find an example for practically every programming aspect in the provided sample projects. And if I had any questions, I was always helped promptly in the Hollywood forum, be it by Andreas himself or other Hollywood programmers.
Hollywood is a programming language and so programming knowledge is necessary. Using the Hollywood Designer, however, you can do one or the other without, but this is more comparable to Scala or PowerPoint and is not a programming toolbox in the sense.
However, if you want to learn programming, I can recommend Hollywood as a starting point, especially because of the excellent documentation. Or you can click together something simple in the designer (a small slideshow or so) and then look at the generated script and try to understand what is going on."
Update: (05:53, 10.08.21, dr)
Michael Rupp emphazies that he is looking for beta testers. If you have a MorphOS or AmigaOS4 system and a Sonos speaker, then please contact him via mail. (dr)

Tales of Gorluth III: Development status and survey
In January 2019 the third part of Tales of Gorluth Saga was announced. In April of the last year the developer Patrick Nevian (AMIworx) informed that the third part is being ported to the Scorpion Engine.
Now Nevian has asked all users who have pre-ordered the game how to proceed. The developer kindly allowed us to publish this mail:
"Dear Gorluth fans!
It´s been a while since my last update email. I told you about TOGIII being converted to the Scorpion Engine.
The advantages are obvious: 50 fps, better graphics, etc.
My Backbone version of TOGIII has been finished for a while now. Erik keeps improving Scorpion and the features are impressive. The implementation process will take some time, as Erik is working on more than one project.
Now my question to you: Do you still want to wait for the greatly improved Scorpion version, or do you want the unoptimized Backbone version?
I will discuss a deadline with Erik soon so that the Gorluth series can be completed one way or another. I´m looking forward to your feedback!"
He also invites all other users and potential purchasers of the game to give feedback. (dr)

Emulator: QEMU 6.1 emulates Pegasos II
Two days ago, release candidate 1 of version 6.1 of the emulator QEMU has been published, including now the possibility to also emulate bplan's PowerPC mainboard Pegasos II.
Besides the AmigaOne X5000 and the already emulated mainboard Sam460ex, Pegasos II is the only further platform running MorphOS as well as AmigaOS 4.1, barring original Amiga computers with corresponding accelerator boards, which, despite internal maintenance, are not officially supported anymore since MorphOS 1.4.5. Lawsuit: Hyperion's response to Evert Carton's testimony
On June 25, 2021 Hyperion's co-founder and sole managing director during the settlement negotiations with Amiga Inc. in 2009, Evert Carton, was deposed by both parties' lawyers in the lawsuit of the plaintiffs Cloanto and the so-called Amiga parties vs. Hyperion Entertainment as defendant. On July 14, 2021 plaintiffs submitted a motion for leave to file regarding this deposition (amiga-news.de reported).
On July 28, 2021, Hyperion Entertainment submitted their response to the court, requesting that plaintiffs’ motion should be denied (PDF file). Besides lack of diligence - because plaintiffs failed to depose Evert Carton before filing their motion for summary judgement - and increased harm for Hyperion with regard to their business relationships if the summary judgement would be delayed by admission of the deposition, the application is also substantiated by Evert Carton's minor relationship to the Amiga market.
Evert Carton's deposition confirmed the well-known fact within the Amiga community that there had been no relation of Evert Carton to the Amiga market prior to his involvement in Hyperion Entertainment and that this company was originally founded by Ben Hermans and himself as a vehicle for each of them to pursue their own goals (page 80 of the PDF file of the deposition). Lack of knowledge regarding AmigaOS 3.x due to this could be found in the testimony when Evert Carton was asked regarding specific products by Commodore underlying disputed trademarks such as "Workbench" (p. 54), while nevertheless he was aware of other details, for example the programming languages used in the source code of the original operating system which had to be adapted for creating AmigaOS 4 (p. 82).
Thus Hyperion's lawyer emphasizes that - as admitted by Evert Carton - Ben Hermans was the drving force during negotiations with Amiga Inc. in 2009 (p. 153, p. 25) and that Evert Carton could not force himself to become interested in Amiga, despite trying (p. 133). Furthermore it is pointed out that he lost faith in the new project regarding the AmigaOne X5000 (p. 91/92) and started a business of his own in November 2009, i.e. just one month after signing the settlement agreement, to avoid his revenue being continuously consumed by Hyperion's Amiga activities anymore (p. 262).
Regarding the fact that, due to Ben Hermans' main occupation, Evert Carton was the sole director and owner of 97 % of Hyperion's shares during the time frame of the negotiations with Amiga Inc. taking place, the lawyer is bringing forward the argument that by the time the settlement agreement had actually been executed, the distribution of shares would already have been changed during alteration of the legal form of the company - resulting in him owning "the minority as the only shareholder who lacked knowledge or understanding of Amiga" (49 % vs. 48 % by Ben Hermans and 3 % by Timothy de Groote), and that he would have just signed the settlement agreement in 2009 for Hyperion "because he lived within 50 meters of a notary" (p. 132). Back then Hyperion's company address was at Evert Carton's place of residence (p. 145).
Since thus Hyperion's intentions in negotiations with Amiga Inc. in 2009 would have been basically identic to Ben Hermans' intentions - which would be also visible in lacking memory on which party had added certain phrases (p. 100) or why the term "software" was defined differently compared to the original contract from 2001 (p. 112), or in the fact that Evert Carton didn't read all pages of the book "Amiga DOS Manual" (p. 118) - admission of his testimony is considered futile in a situation of his word against that one of his former managing partner, so that the application for admission should be denied, also due to lack of diligence. Iconverter: Old icons with a new look / Basics about AmigaOS icons
With 'Iconverter' (currently version 0.95) you can convert old icons as if they were created for today's more recent versions of AmigaOS. Iconverter converts AmigaOS 1.x and MagicWB icons into the format of NewIcons, using the color scale for which these icons were created. Theoretically this would also work for icons created under AmigaOS 2.0 to 3.1, but they are usually displayed correctly without conversion.
To get the converted icons displayed correctly, the NewIcons extension is needed under AmigaOS 3.0 and 3.1 or the new IconLib_46 created by Peter Keunecke. AmigaOS 3.1.4 and 3.2 do not need these extensions.
Iconverter is a shell or command line program written in Standard-C. Thus it should compile for all other systems that have a C compiler. About the background of the program the author Iljitsch van Beijnum writes:
"Workbench 1.0 to Workbench 1.3 used a four-color screen with the colors blue / white / black / orange. With the introduction of Workbench 2.0 this was changed to gray / black / white / blue-gray. This means that the WB 1.x icons look like a negative version of themselves. Also, the WB 1.x icons were designed for "640x200" or "640x256" screen resolutions. WB 2.0 and later icons were designed for higher screen resolutions (640x400 or 640x512), which means that WB 1.x icons look stretched on most newer systems."
In addition to adapting the icons to high-resolution screens, WB 2.0 also adds a 3D effect frame around each icon. From WB 2.0 it is also possible to change the number of colors on the Workbench screen, especially on AGA Amigas. There are about six generations of icons on the Amiga:
- 1. workbench 1.x icons created for medium resolutions (640x200 or 640x256) with a four-color blue/white/black/orange palette.
- Workbench 2.0 - 3.1 Icons created for higher resolutions (640x400 or 640x512) with a four-color gray/black/white/blue-gray palette. The system now draws a 3D frame around the icons.
- MagicWB icons. These can use eight colors and require a specific eight-color palette.
- NewIcons icons. NewIcons is an extension of the original icon file format and allows icons with up to 256 colors. The palette used by the icon is included and the system adjusts the colors of the icon to best display on any Workbench screen. NewIcons are limited to 93x93 pixels.
- 5. workbench 3.5 ColorIcons. These icons are encoded in an IFF format and are an extension of the original icon format. Like NewIcons, they can use up to 256 colors, but can be larger, 256x256 pixels maximum. (Sometimes they are also called "GlowIcons", since the GlowIcon style became popular with Workbench 3.5).
- 6. PNG-Icons.
NewIcons are supported by the NewIcons system, AmigaOS 3.1.4 and IconLib_46. AmigaOS 3.1.4 and IconLib_46 also support Workbench 3.5.
ColorIcons and IconLib_46 supports PNG icons.
Workbench 1.x icons look completely different on newer systems because a different palette is used and because they were designed for a different screen resolution. MagicWB icons only look correct if the MagicWB palette is used consistently. On an AmigaOS system version 3.0 or later with a workbench with more than eight colors, MagicWB symbols will tend to look strange and inconsistent because the system reassigns colors 4 - 7 as needed.
It is of course possible to use a tool (or under 3.1.4 a setting) to fix the colors 0 - 7 in the MagicWB palette. However, MagicWB colors 0 and 3 are somewhat darker than WB 2.0+ colors. Long story short, even with additional effort, it is not possible to get the three early generations of icons to look right on the same system at the same time. Iconverter solves this problem by converting these three types of icons into a NewIcon with the correct palette. The resulting icon files retain the original icon, so they look the same on systems that do not support the NewIcon extension.
There are two different versions of the iconverter: The version iconverter.ixemul requires the ixemul.library (version 48 or higher) and has the advantage that you can use the icon files with placeholders like #?.info. The regular version does not require the ixemul.library but does not recognize placeholders." (dr) (Translation: bb)
