Overview: Bulletin board system of demo scene
Demozoo is a website dedicated to collecting and organizing the history of the demoscene. As the maintainers now announced, it was already started some time ago to catalog Bulletin board systems (BBS) with scene reference. The result is a list of over 7500 mailboxes, complete with sysops, affiliated groups, BBS intros, text ads, etc. The list continues to be updated.

These BBS can be browsed through an alphabetical list or searched by tags. In addition, you can display the locations on a world map. (dr)

RESHOOT PROXIMA 3: Preview of Stage 1
In August last year we reported about a new preview video of the third part of the shoot'em up series RESHOOT PROXIMA 3, which is currently in development. Shortly before Christmas 'AmigaBill' invited the three developers of the game Richard Löwenstein, Martin Ahman and Kevin Saunders to its Twitch channel to present the prototype of Stage 1. This demonstration is also available as a Video (game start from minute 33).

As Richard Löwenstein explained to us when asked, a prototype of the first stage was shown, "still far from complete. There are quite a few attack waves missing, the boss is conspicuous by its complete absence." Likewise, exciting attack patterns, boss designs and fine-tuning of the music would still have to be tackled. On the other hand, 90% of the graphics for all five stages have been drawn, and the visual designs for all stages have been defined and technically implemented. (dr)

Retro gaming: Ziggurat Interactive acquires the rights to Rainbow-Arts games
Five years ago, Julian Eggebrecht, founder of the legendary development studio Factor 5, explained in interviews (German) that the games company had not only secured the name of the former German publisher Rainbow Arts from the THQ bankruptcy estate, but also the rights to the titles published by the Gütersloh-based company in the 1980s and 1990s. A short time later, Factor 5, which also went bankrupt in 2009, was re-established in Germany as a GmbH.

The retro publisher Ziggurat Interactive now announces in a press release that they have acquired the rights to over 80 titles from the Rainbow Arts catalog. Rendering Ranger R2 (SNES), Logical, Lollypop, X-Out, and M.U.D.S. are listed as examples. However, the best-known title published in Gütersloh is not mentioned: the "Turrican" series Factor 5 had still marketed in the fall of 2020 as limited new editions. (cg)

Arcade ports: Demo version of 'Wonderboy', preview video of 'Final Fight'
Wonderboy is to be an Amiga conversion of Sega's arcade classic of the same name. The Amiga version is created with the help of the Scorpion Engine. A now available first demo version, which is called alpha by the developer, runs smoothly from an Amiga 1200. Eine für den A500 optimierte Variante soll in Kürze folgen.

There is already an Amiga implementation of Capcom's Acrade machine Final Fight from 1991, but it is not very popular with friends of the beat-em-up genre. A fan of the automaton is now working on a new implementation developed in machine language, which currently requires a 68020 processor. A video shows the current status, one level and two different opponents have been implemented so far. (cg)

Event: Amiga37 announced
Markus Tillmann writes (translation): "After the 2015, 2017 and 2019 events in Neuss, the fourth major German Amiga event will take place in 2022 with Amiga37 Germany. Compared to previous years, however, it will no longer be held in the Rheinisches Landestheater, but now in the Kunstwerk in Mönchengladbach.

The location there offers more space, which means that both the exhibitors will have more room, and more visitor tickets can be offered.

The concept remains the same and it will be a mixture of user meetings, trade fair, lectures and much more! The duration will also remain the same - so keep the weekend of 15 and 16 October 2022 in mind!

Besides numerous exhibitors - such as APC&TCP, the Apollo team, Alinea, ACube and Return magazine - well-known Amiga guests from Germany and abroad are expected again. The main sponsor of the event is again A-EON/Trevor Dickinson.

A webpage and further information are not yet available. But we will keep you up to date."

Update: (08:40, 12.05.22, snx)
Title link added, since the website has been created meanwhile. (snx)

Looking for demand: Zorro II/III graphics card with SAGA
At the title link, in the forum of a1k.org, Gunnar von Boehn (Apollo team) is looking for interest in a graphics card based on the FPGA chipset of the Vampire turbo cards for Amigas with Zorro II or Zorro III slots. In prospect are the known SAGA graphics modes including a full HD resolution at 60 hertz and the new SAGA 3D functions, video acceleration, 16-bit audio and inclusion of the Amiga video signal for HDMI output.

Since the drivers (P96/AHI) were already available and practically all other components were also at hand, the project could be completed relatively quickly if there was sufficient interest to buy one - allegedly even as early as this summer. (snx)

AROS: Update of 68k distribution Aros Vision
Since our previous news-item, Olaf Schönweiß has updated his AROS/68k distribution Aros Vision four times. Besides a new version of the Hippo Player, a CD-ROM filesystem and further programs regarding CDs, CRC checksums, encoding and decoding, virus protection as well as a font editor and viewer have been added. Furthermore, iGame is working again now.

Meanwhile, also a HDF version of the distribution is available. Like users of the UAE version, also those using the HDF version can update the distribution out of itself by choosing System/Install/Update from the menu. The startup-sequence and user-startup files won't be changed.

For first-time installation it is recommended to copy the libraries bullet.library and rexxsyslib.library from AmigaOS 3.1 to Libs: and the command rexxmast to C: and to use the Installer 43.3 by Amiga Technologies (Aminet) for installation. WHDLoad is pre-installed using AROS ROMs; for full support, you will need original Kickstart ROMs (description). (snx)

Web emulator: vAmigaWeb
For quite some time we have been reporting about vAmiga, an Amiga emulator for MacOS that emulates the classic Amigas 500, 1000 and 2000. Based on this code, two web ports have been developed in the last months: vAmigaWeb and vAmiga (online). We had already mentioned both in our article Emulation: vAmiga as web port and tested the latter in more detail.

The subject of today's article is the web implementation vAmigaWeb by the developer 'mithrendal'. As the author explains to us, it had already become apparent during the development and design of his predecessor project VirtualC64 Web that a desktop app must have different characteristics than one that wants to cover all device classes. These are as follows:
  • adapts to devices with different sizes (keyword responsive design)
  • virtual touch joystick
  • virtual touch mouse
  • virtual keyboard
  • custom action buttons that let you build your own onscreen buttons
  • these can be stored with user-defined scripts for controlling e.g. continuous fire. You can even design your own 'bot controls', which is made possible by querying and processing the enemy sprite positions in your own custom script. A corresponding script editor with syntax highlighting and intelligent code completion is built in.
  • runs on all browsers of the last 4 years including on iPhone/iPad-Safari
vAmiga (online) by Christian Corti, on the other hand, aims at a 1:1 adaptation of the Mac desktop version of Dirk Hoffmann's vAmiga, i.e. porting the elegant desktopUI of the Mac to the web. Due to its design, it does not support mobile device classes or not to the full extent. According to Corti, the purpose of vAmiga (online) is to be used on a real desktop with keyboard and mouse connected. vAmigaWeb, on the other hand, is also very usable on the go on a cell phone or with a tablet (on the couch).

vAmiga (online) on the other hand will still get quite a few features of the Mac version, such as various inspectors for CPU, blitter, etc…. Both versions support the saving of snapshots, i.e. game states: At any point in a game, you can save the game state using 'take snapshot' and thus conveniently bypass loading times. This is especially useful at a very difficult part of a game, where you try tirelessly to defeat the 'final enemy'. Having saved the score shortly beforehand, you can always try your luck from there. Taking snapshots can also be assigned to keys, e.g. the key 's' can be used to save the game state and the key 'r' (reload) to restore it. These key assignments can be created using the action buttons, the '+' icon in the menu bar.

Having reached this point, one or the other is surely eager to simply test the web emulator. Therefore, we do without screenshots and recommend two different variants instead:
Those (experts) who would like to take a closer look at the emulator and test their favorite game are advised to use the direct start. All others who first want to get an idea and comfortably see the emulator in action are recommended to visit the website especially created for vAmigaWeb:

Here you get the pleasure of seeing another feature live in action: The emulator embedded, i.e. integrated, in a website. Here done and ready configured for a demo, three games - brandnew here the Knightmare Amiga port, which was released just four days ago - and SysInfo.

Our test showed that we could basically run all games smoothly with our Samsung laptop with Intel Core i3-2330M processor, but we experienced sound jitters during the demo and when we additionally moved the mouse during the Celtic Heart game. Presumably, two cores are not sufficient here. The author would be happy to receive more empirical values in this regard.

Having asked the author how he actually came up with this project idea, he said:
"I participated in the iAmiga project in 2016, which is a native Amiga emulator for iOS. But since it is only based on an outdated version of WinUAE, it has many compatibility issues, some of which I was able to fix (by patching back current WINUAE source code) but overall it was difficult. Then there was the possibility to take completely the current WinUAE code (like FS-UAE by Frode Solheim) but the source code is so complex and "grown" over decades. In 2019, Prof. Dirk Hoffmann started writing this completely rewritten, highly efficient vAmigaCore. He bought some real Amigas (I still had an old A1000) to have test candidates to benchmark the emulation against, if it is really accurate.

I was bothered by the fact that Apple does not allow emulators in the Appstore and the 'free provisioning certificates' for developers only work for 7 days, so I came to PWAs, the ProgressiveWebApp standard from Google, with which you can build quasi native apps in HTML5. So the step to compile the source code from Dirk into a WebAssembly (binary code) was obvious.

The so installed PWA on Android or iOS is executed many times faster than for example Rupert Hausberger's Scripted Amiga Emulator. First, however, the VirtualC64 Web was created in 2019. You can also integrate it into your own web pages as well as a Youtube player." (dr)

Trevor Dickinson on: A1222+/Enhancer V2.x/From Vultures to Vampires Vol 2
In response to our inquiry, Trevor Dickinson (A-EON) provided a brief summary of the current status of some projects:
  • A1222plus motherboard

    • Hardware works as expected, including network and audio
    • DVD drive support still problematic at the moment
    • Board now can boot Workbench
    • Performance like the original beta board: all popular software (e.g. Odyssey and IBrowse, but also the latest DVDPlayer version) as well as A-EON's 2D and 3D graphics drivers including the latest Enhancer 2.1 release are supported.
    • The A1222+ uses the latest uboot firmware written by Mark Olsen, which provides additional variables such as reduction in the number of Boing Ball animation and generally faster boot time.
    • production start and planned availability not set yet: currently preparing early adopter production depending on component availability

  • Enhancer Software V54

    • further updates are in progress after the release of version 2.1 (e.g. integration of AmiSSL 4.11, improved Warp2D library). The 14th alpha build of V54 was released to beta testers on January 4. Release in the course of the year
    • Two installation variants possible:
      • over the existing OS4 installation (similar to current version 2.1)
      • on a separate Enhancer partition, from which can be booted by default (the OS4 installation CD is required once for this purpose). It is unclear which components are used or copied temporarily or permanently.

  • LibreOffice

    • Trevor speaks of "a long and expensive journey which I am hoping is coming to a satisfactory conclusion".
    • record a video of Libre Office in action planned.
    • Soon: widen the beta test programme to accelerate the the first release.

  • From Vultures to Vampires, volume 2

    • at the moment Kickstarter campaign for financing the second volume until 24. Januar 2022
      • Initiated by David John Pleasance, who also focuses on all administration, including contacting printers
      • Trevor Dickinson is not involved in the Kickstarter campaign and is not accepting any funds from the Kickstarter campaign or future book sales. He is 3/4 finished writing volume 2
      • covering the years 2005 to 2021
      • currently about 6.400 Euro are given from required 18.000
      • E-Books available from the end of February
      • with signature if desiredr
      • ubsidizing shipping costs for buyers outside GB

AmigaOS 4: 'Lite XL' editor 1.16.12.7
At the end of last year, George Sokianos had announced with the release of version v1.16.12.3 that he had started porting the editor 'Lite XL', which originates from the Linux world (amiga-news.de reported). Yesterday he released the for the time being last update to v1.16.12.7 for this version branch and writes the following about it:

"Today I did the last release of Lite XL for AmigaOS 4.1. Don't worry, I am not stopping working on this fine editor. On the contrary. I will stop working on the v1.16.12 source branch so to focus on the latest available version.

The last few days I managed to port Lua 5.3 and Lua 5.4, as well as the PCRE2. Although the newer versions of Lua are not necessary yet, the PCRE2 is one of the mandatory libraries needed. All of them are highly experimental, and not tested thoroughly, but I am happy I managed to finish them.

In the new v1.16.12.7 release, which is already available to be downloaded from my Git repository and OS4Depot, I did a few changes that might help with the SDL to use the Gfx Card in a better way, which will increase the overall speed. Also, I included a few plugins and colour schemas that are tested and working fine with this version, in case you would like to add some extra features or make it look better for you.

I updated the README_OS4 file where you can find more information about all these additions, how to use them and a couple of tips 'n tricks that might help you.

I hope it will keep you occupied until the next major release, which is going to be epic.

RTG driver: P96 V3.2.2 released
Jens Schönfeld (individual Computers) wrote:
"The RTG driver P96 enjoys growing popularity: More then 40 paid downloads (more than a third of them for the full price or more) during the weeks since version V3.2.0 has been published, have taken us over the threshold of 30% cost coverage since we've taken ownership of the software in 2016. We'd like to send a big thank-you to the Amiga community for strong support and detailed bug reports in our support forum, which help us improve the software on a regular basis." Changes:
  • Version 3.2.2 attempts one more time to deal with broken software: If a program like Descent opens a planar screen mode, but combines it with chunky rendering routines, the new version 3.2.2 can display a correct picture despite this evident software error.
  • Sprite colours are now switched if the sprite travels from one screen to another in a split-screen environment. This fixes the colour of the mouse pointer during screen dragging.
  • masked blitting of planar bitmaps has been fixed: This fixes the "Palette"-preferences program.
  • If a split-screen (dragged screen) is used on a PIV-card, the video-window will not be disabled, but will pan together with the front screen. Note that P96 currently does not support video or memory windows on the back screen.

Vertical shooter: Amiga port of 'Knightmare' released (update)
The musician, DJ and developer 'Hoffman' had released the final version of his amiga version of the game 'Metal Gear' last year (amiga-news.de reported). Also originally written for the MSX and published by Konami was the vertically scrolling shooter Knightmare, of which he released his amiga port today (official video). He wrote:

"Originally released in 1986, Knightmare is one of the many classic games produced by Konami for the MSX. It’s the first in a trilogy of games with each edition opting for a different style of gameplay throughout the series. You play as Popolon and your Mission is to rescue Aphrodite from the clutches of the evil Prince of Darkness. You have to fight your way through 8 levels of enemies and bosses along the way to rescue the Goddess of Love and Beauty. The action takes place in the form of a top-down vertical scrolling shoot’em up style including various power-ups along the way".

The Amiga port contains the follow features:
  • Original game fully disassembled to ensure accurate gameplay
  • All graphics remastered by Toni Galvez
  • Brand new title and loading screens
  • High quality Amiga Enhanced Sound Effects
  • All levels and bosses have unique Amiga Enhanced soundtracks
  • All new Hi-score table with automatic saving to disk
  • 50hz / 60hz gameplay option
  • Built-in auto-fire
  • Additional secret bonus power-up added ( can you find it? )
  • Compatible with all Amigas running 512k chip and 512k other ram

Sokoban clone: Astro Blox Revisited downloadable for free
Astro Blox Revisited, a variant of Sokoban and basically a 'deluxe' edition of Robert Szacki's Astro Blox, had been released in 2020 at the Polish retro event Decrunch 2020 as a demo version (amiga-news.de reported), which still had - according to the developer - a lot of errors and was impossible to pass. Later commercial distribution as a boxed edition followed.

Since yesterday now also the full version is available for free download at the title link. System requirements are 512 KB of RAM. The game was written by Paweł 'Juen' Nowak, graphics and music are from Zbigniew 'PPILL' Pożoga and Jakub 'Aceman' Szeląg, respectively. (snx)

PDF manual: 'ROM Kernel Reference Manual' for AmigaOS 3.2
The 'ROM Kernel Reference Manual' for AmigaOS 3.2, written by Camilla Boemann and Jason Stead, is updated continuously and is oriented to the 'Amiga ROM Kernel Reference Manuals' from the 80s written by Robert Peck.

This book aims to represent all programming topics of the Amiga operating system since release 2 up to 3.2. The challenge is to cover features that are 30 years old as well as things that would only be added in the last few years. The authors write the following about this:

"This book is initially published as a PDF as it is more important to get the information out quickly than for it to be complete. Over time it will be improved and more information will be added. Thus initially you may find several topics lacking, but please keep an eye out for updates. This book is meant to help you expand your knowledge of programming the Amiga. It assumes you have previous experience with programming the Amiga, and it all but assumes you have all the books in the Amiga ROM Kernel Reference Manual series. Like the books in that series a knowledge of the C programming language is not required, but will make it much easier to understand the material in this book." (dr)

Philosophy: The Amiga as "a computer built to last 50 years"
In early 2021, engineer, writer and lecturer at the École Polytechnique de Louvain, Lionel Dricot, wrote an essay titled 'The computer built to last 50 years' in which he ponders how a long-lasting computer could be developed to save both one's finances, but also resources, and thus the planet.

Carl Svensson, well-known our readers by his ARexx-Tools 'RxEnv', Carl Svensson has now written a rebuttal: 'The Amiga as "a computer built to last 50 years"'. In it, he claims that the '50-year-old computer' already exists - in various forms and designs - and that we just need to find it in attics and restore it: the Amiga.

A computer that has been in use for around 30 years would literally stand for sustainability. Its longevity makes up for what it lacks in energy efficiency. (dr)

AmiTube 0.7: YouTube client for 68k-Amigas (update)
Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow's AmiTube enables watching YouTube videos on an 68k Amiga. To do so, they are converted to Commodore's CDXL format and downloaded (video).

Now version 0.7 is available which among others allows you to download the original video from YouTube in different resolutions or as audio file. Detailed changes:
  • New CDXL Option 320px and AGA colors
  • direct download from youtube without conversation
  • select resolution on direct download
  • Update checking
  • Download latest version
  • Question before delete movie
The latest version always is available on the AmiTube website.

Please not that conversion is executed on the developer's personal server, thus he asks to restrict oneself to few and short videos. Furthermore the program must not be shared but always be downloaded from the author's website at the title link.

Update: (09.01.2022, 06:39, dr)

In his new blog entry, yesterday Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow pointed out that an (untested) guide published on the official AmiTube website now describes how to set up your own 'converter server'. (dr)

Preview video: 'Scourge of the Underkind'
At the end of 2020, we reported for the last time about "Scourge of the Underkind", which was actually announced for 2021 and which sees itself as a tribute to games like Gods, Chaos Engine and Alien Breed. On the project's Facebook page, there have been regular reports about the development status over the last year: at the end of September it was reported that the music was finished and the last level was started, while at the beginning of October the game instructions were proofread.

oday, a new preview video was released on YouTube, showing the first 13 minutes of the game, including the loading screen and intro. The authir pointed out that he "was using a bezel in WinUAE and a screen filter which has caused some noise in this video." The game would look much better for real.
There would still be a few small changes made to the game, but basically the finished version would be shown.

Additionally, an other video shows how the intro screen was drawn, with Scourge's music. (dr)

Video documentary on Trackers: 'The Sound of 16-Bit'
Stuart Brow regularly posts documentary-style videos on his YouTube channel Ahoy about video games and their impact on culture. As a one-man team, he is responsible for all aspects of production: script, graphics, voiceover, gameplay recording, editing, and music.

In his last video documentary he takes the audience back to around 1984 - the dawn of 16-bit computing, and the emergence of a new style of computer music. And he also wrote:
"Ever since I did 'A Brief History of Graphics', I wanted to do a similar treatment for sound & music - but rather than attempt to cover everything in a single video, I thought it would be better to focus on a single topic. This time it's trackers - a format dear to me as it was my introduction to computer music."

And so his tracker time travel touches among other things also the Amiga programs "The Ultimate Soundtracker", "OctaMED Soundstudio" or "Digibooster".

Whereas he had previously financed his productions with advertising revenue, he now relies entirely on his audience and is happy to receive financial support on his Patreon page. (dr)

Amiga emulator for MacOS: vAmiga 1.1 Beta 7
Dirk Hoffmann has released a new beta version of his Amiga emulator for macOS which is currently under development. The changes of beta version 7 are as follows:
  • Features:
    • Added support for remote connections. Three remote servers have been implemented:
      • A serial port server emulating a null modem cable on the serial port of the Amiga.
      • A retro shell server that allows the user to connect to retro shell via telnet.
      • An experimental GDB server implementing parts of the GDB serial remote protocol.
  • Compatibility:
    • Writes to DMA pointer registers are sometimes dropped on a real Amiga. The old code for checking if a write has to be dropped didn’t work correctly in all cases.
  • Bug fixes:
    • In the video configuration panel, the color palette couldn’t be changed any more. This has been fixed.
    • OCS detection failed in some scenarios.
    • On startup, some CPU registers were initialised with wrong values.
  • Code quality:
    • The code has been migrated to Cmake and is now compatible with all three major C++ compilers (clang, gcc, msvc).

Audio player: AmigaAMP 3.31 for AmigaOS 3.9 released
Thomas Wenzel wrote: Unfortunately, a piece of old code was left over in 3.30 when the MHI handling was revised. This leftover caused the playback not to recover after a dropout due to briefly high system load (e.g. CVPPC screen switching at very high resolution).
This should now be fixed in 3.31. There are no other changes. The PPC version is not affected and remains at version 3.30 for now. The next update will then carry the version number 3.32 for both architectures. (dr)

AmigaOS 4: New version 53.15 of Updates preferences
Today the new version 53.15 of the update preconfiguration program for AmigaOS 4.1 was released. This fixed a bug which made it impossible to basically set a directory for the updates - saving caused a crash - and moreover in a readable way:

Likewise, you can now specify separately where the update archive should be permanently stored and which directory should be used to unpack it

In our test, in contrast to AmigaOS 4.1 FE Update 2 Classic under WinUAE, a peculiarity occurred with the AmigaOne X5000: Here, a directory could be selected and saved using the 'Updates' tool in the 'Prefs' folder (left image). However, if you then start the AmiUpdate tool and choose the preferences from the menu, you get an incorrect display of the directory (right window):

It is only displayed incorrectly. The directory is still stored correctly. An initial assumption that a "_" in the directory name or a second directory level is the cause could not be confirmed. (dr)

AmigaOS 4: Web browser Odyssey 1.23 r5 (update)
In the middle of 2020 Roman 'kas1e' Kargin had made available the last beta version of his AmigaOS 4 port of the Odyssey web browser. Now he has published the first release candidate (RC) for version 1.23 r5 and states the following:

"Rebuild was done with the latest GCC 11.1 and latest OS4 SDk (so new MUI, DOS, EXec, pthreads and co). As one of the positive results is the size of the binary start to be smaller on 3MB (60MB instead of 63MB). There is also a new YouTube script from MorphOS's devs (ASiegel), so to make accelerated video player works with changed youtube. To activate it, the following steps are required:
  • Delete in your scripts Youtube Fullscreen Fix and Youtube HTML5 Converter. Restart Odyssey and add again but this time new scripts (so allowed sites and stuff will be new ones).
  • Add to URL preferences http://youtube.com with spoof as Ipad 13.2.3. So it will always switch to the mobile version.
  • Now on any video when you click on any part of the video, you will have in the right/bottom area gadget to expand the video: clicking on it will bring our accelerated media player back."
Changes of this version:
  • Updated curl-ca-bundle.crt (https://curl.haxx.se/ca/cacert.pem , 26 Oct 2021)
  • Updated to Curl 7.80.0 (10th of November 2021)
  • Updated to OpenSSL 1.1.1m (14-Dec-2021) (thanks MickJT for tips)
  • Updated to SQLite 3.34.0 (2020-12-01) instead of old v3.7.5 (2011-02-01). Port done by Steffen Gutmann
  • Updated to libFreeType2 2.11.1 (02-Dec-2021)
  • Updated to libXML2 2.9.12 (13-May-2021)
  • Updated to libWebP v1.2.2-rc1 (18-Dec-2021)

Windows: Alternative Amiga GUI available again (Update)
At the title link, tech magazine computerbase.de reports briefly on the project of its forum member 'Silvester72', who has written his own "Amiga Workbench" implementation for Windows 10 and 11 that can be either used as a separate application or as a replacement of the File Explorer.

Once another forum member pointed out, though, that Amiga and AmigaOS as well as the Boingball logo would still be registered trademarks, the author withdrew his program that had been available for free download before.

Update: (18:11, 03.01.22, snx)
Under its new name myWorkspace! the program is now available again. (snx)

In preparation of his planned Amiga documentation, David 'The 8-Bit Guy' Murray restores an Amiga 1000 donated to him in a video at the title link. By releasing version 1.2 (2019), at the end of the last year Alain Fontanin has resumed the development of his "Amiga Source Editor" (ASE) which originally started in 1989.

The author constantly develops his text editor further and now has released version 1.80 with the following changes:
  • Possibility to cancel the closing of a document or even of ASE2019
  • Fixed some 'hit enforcer'
  • Ability to record and execute macros
  • Improvement of the positioning of windows on large screens
  • New ARexx functions: WakeDocument, SleepDocument, CloseAllDocuments and ExecuteMacro

Preview video 24: Souverän Soccer
Daniel 'Daytona675x' Müßener (Wings Remastered, MiniGL4GL4ES, Tower 57) is working on a soccer game with 3D view called "Souverän Soccer" (amiga-news.de reported) which is supposed to run on unaccelerated Amiga 1200 and CD32 with 50 fps.

In his 24. preview video the author presents a lot of changes, among others:

  • Highlight: Null modem support. The playing field is then shown from the perspective of the respective team. Of course, the serial link still runs at 50Hz on unaccelerated A1200.
  • Optimization of player drawing by exploiting frame coherence: only what is not painted over anyway is erased.
  • Turf distance shading now much smoother.
  • Marking for active players, usually the figures closest to the ball, inside. Realized with hardware sprites. It wasn't easy, because all 5 existing ones are already in use elsewhere.
  • simple player control (running and simple shooting), ball sticks to the player for now, real ball physics with correct acceleration, gravity and friction.

Mod-Player: HippoPlayer 2.50
Kari-Pekka Koljonen, developer of the Amiga-MOD player HippoPlayer, has updated it to version 2.50. Changes:

  • New fixes:
    • There was a bug in the sample player (which also plays MP3) in AHI compatibility. It could hang when playback was stopped. This happened especially when using AHI with the Toccata driver. Should work now.
    • Another different possible AHI related hang bug fixed which could happen when pausing playback.
    • When the play mode was set to "List repeatedly" and the list was full of dividers (a.k.a. directories), Hippo could get stuck trying to find a module to be played. This should be fixed now.
    • Possible hang/crash bug (related to a stray audio interrupt) fixed in Ben Daglish and Kris Hatlelid formats.
  • New supported music formats:
    • Impulse Tracker, using the "Impulse" deliplayer, written by the Delirium team for DeliTracker.
    • Impulse plays IT formats v1.00 and v2.00. Newer formats are not supported.
    • Impulse supports pattern skip forwards and back, along with song end detection. Song position display is not supported.
    • 32 channels are in use in all modules. This is due to the way IT modules work, channels are used dynamically according to whatever is needed at the moment.
    • Modules can be played using the PS3M mixing engine or AHI.
    • Stereo scope works with PS3M.
    • Channel panning is not supported, each channel has a fixed stereo position.
    • Requires 68020 or better.
    • Impulse is not included in the HippoPlayer.group file, so Hippo will look for it in the following places: "PROGDIR:", "PROGDIR:eagleplayers", "eagleplayer2:eagleplayers". Here "PROGDIR:" is the directory where the Hippo binary is installed.
    • Impulse can be found in the Aminet DeliTracker archive.
  • New features:
    • There is a new list mode which can be toggled by the button on top of the file slider: file browser. The list modes now are:
      • Playlist (list icon)
      • Favorites (heart icon)
      • File browser (disk icon)
    • File browser mode:
      • In this mode the list displays contents of directories.
      • Directories are entered by the "Play" button, return/enter key, or LMB double click. (Note that double click can be enabled/disabled in Prefs.)
      • The topmost list item shows the name of the displayed directory. Activating it goes back to the parent directory.
      • Files are filtered using the configured match pattern, see "Prefs/Loading/File Match Pattern" (kick2.0+ only).
      • If you have enabled "Keep list on exit", Hippo will return to the directory where you left off if you were in the file browser mode when exiting.
    • New keyboard shortcuts:
      • List mode toggle: [SHIFT+M]
      • Navigate to parent in file browser: [BACKSPACE]
  • New ARexx commands (for HippoPlayerIR support):
    • TOGGLEMODE: change between list modes
    • FAVORITE: toggle chosen module favorite status

AmigaOS 4: First public version of editor 'Lite XL' released
Recently George Sokianos, author of the AmigaOS 4.1 application MediaVault, had announced that he is going to port the Linux editor Lite XL. Now he has released the first public version v1.16.12.3 of his port.

According to the author "LiteXL for AmigaOS 4 is still experimental and there are some known issues, but it is quite usable. It is recommended to use it on a fast AmigaOne, although it was tested on microAmiga1 and works pretty good, but slow."

Using an AmigaOne X5000, the editor could be started without problems (screenshots see above). Under WinUAE and AmigaOS 4.1 it runs with the help of the PatchCompositeTags, which gives the following result:

Book: Interest in a German version of Commodore - The Inside Story? (Update)
Three years ago the English book "Commodore: The Inside Story" became available at retailers. There the former Commodore UK Managing Director David Pleasance describes the twelve years in which he worked for the company.

Currently he wants to find out interest in a German version of the book, translation would be done by Anton Preinsack. Sufficient demand given, a crowdfunding campaign at Kickstarter would be started, with a price of 35 British Pounds for the hardcover book (almost 42 Euros currently). An e-book version would follow. If you are interested in it, please write an e-mail to email@davidpleasance.com with the subject "German Translation".

Update: (02.02.22, 09:01, snx)
In a posting to our comments section, Anton Preinsack points out that his German translation would be basically finished already and that an e-book version would be published in any case. (snx)

  • Date fields can have an optional calendar pop-up button for selecting a date more comfortably.
  • A virtual list field can optionally control the table from which the list is generated from in a select-from-where query. This allows to change the currently displayed record in the table according to the selected row in the list.
  • When a virtual list field is printed or exported to PDF, multi-line entries in the list are now supported correctly.
  • MUIbase project files can now be opened directly with a double click on all platforms.
  • Several bug fixes.

RTG driver: P96 V3.2.1 released
Jens Schönfeld (individual Computers) wrote:
"We've released P96 V3.2.0 in time for Christmas. Now some changes have now been implemented after lots of customers have used it in a large variety of configurations. Errors that were reported in our support forum have been addressed immediately. The update is already available in our shop system, so every new download is providing the latest version.

This time the list of changes is very extensive. The biggest changes have been in the area of blitter emulation, but even older cards could be persuaded via a software trick to use a hardware sprite as a mouse pointer, which brings noticeable speed gains. Perhaps the biggest change is that the ZZ9000 is supported with its dual-palette feature, so screen dragging is possible without color artifacts."

The detailed list of changes is available in the Support Forum. (dr)

Action game: 'Balloons' for all Amiga systems
In mid-October we reported, that Achim Kern (among others 'SmartHome') and Mars Tank Attack) had announced an action game called 'Balloons' which now is available for all Amiga systems. It is a remake written in Hollywood 9 of the original Balloons game written by Enrique Mecklenburg Serkovic.

In 'Balloons' you have to shoot those very balloons at a fair, with the difficulty increasing from level to level: with more balloons, shorter time and limited number of shots. Likewise, in higher levels, certain sequences are given, such as three blue, two red, four green balloons.

The game is available for all platforms for which the Hollywood Player exists and thus for AmigaOS 3/4, MorphOS, WarpOS and AROS. Special archives (with adapted icons) have been created by the author for AmigaOS 3 and 4. (dr)

BASIC compiler: AQB 0.8.1
By his compiler AQB, Günter Bartsch aims to implement a modern, clean, Amiga compatible and future-proof BASIC that is geared to, but no clone of Microsoft's AmigaBASIC and QuickBASIC, respectively.

After last week's release of version 0.8.0, which included a source level debugger, the author elaborates on the new version 0.8.1 (detailed changelog):

"I've been working on AQB a bit more after there was a lot of feedback on the different channels - starting of course from the amiga-news forum to people making YouTube videos about AQB. I have now released a first update for the 0.8.x series - there are a few new commands and features, but there are also important bugfixes for AmigaOS 3.2 and RTG users.

This is also accompanied by editor improvements, most notably the editor now uses the text font set via preferences instead of stubbornly using its own / preset fonts. This is a side effect of the RTG renderer - the previous text renderer could only handle 8 bit wide fonts (still used with these on native screen), while the new RTG renderer can handle arbitrary fonts (but is slower on native Amigas on planar screen is slower)." Arcade game 'Jump!': Little review of the alpha version
The Polish developer Markus Duda is currently putting the finishing touches to his Yoomph implementation for the Amiga, which was originally written for the Atari (amiga-news.de reported). In the game, now called Jump!, you have to move through a three-dimensional tunnel by means of a bouncing Amiga ball and hit various (bonus) surfaces (preview video). The target platform is an Amiga 1200 with 8 MB Fast RAM. The finished game should have the following features:
  • 28 levels
  • 5 music tracks
  • resolution 320x256 with 256 colours
  • can be controlled with joystick or keyboard

We were kindly allowed to test the alpha version of the game. As indicated, we used an A1200 (without turbo card) with 8MB Fast RAM. However, the game could not be started on a workbench screen with all kinds of icons and possibly background images, since 2MB chip RAM are mandatory. If in doubt, boot without startup sequence. The player is greeted with a casual, futuristic music and the following startup screen:

You don't have to spend forever on the control options, clear and concise:

Since you do not know exactly what to expect, better to play it safe and selected the easy mode...:

Let's go! And already the beginning is fun: The tunnel approaches from some distance, you are literally drawn into the game. Which is supported by the now starting more dramatic music:

The task is supposedly simple: hit the orange tiles and do not fall into any holes or missing rows during this hunt, otherwise you will be lost in the vastness of space...:

If you jump on tiles with an arrow, you can skip these dangerous spots. You have to be careful, though, because the entire tube keeps turning a bit. It gets really crazy and absolutely extraordinary when, in the middle of the first level, the ball has to be kept on course sideways and 'upside down' at the edge of the tube. Absolutely amazing:

You may not believe it: The first level was mastered. Yes, I know, in light mode. Here, pleasantly enough, you don't have to hit all the orange tiles, but are allowed to miss ten. But let's take a look at the second level, which is a real challenge right from the start: Several times, 'You died!' is held in front of your nose after a few seconds. Why is that?

Ahhh, there are tiles with holes and even meaner: broken tiles....

I was totally captivated by the game. Should there be a two-player mode, then I can already see myself sitting in front of the Amiga 1200 for hours on end with a buddy, just like in the good old days, taking turns to hunt for points a la 'Pinball Dreams'.

The game can be pre-ordered at the title link as a digital variant for 29 Euros or as a 'boxed version' for 45 Euros plus shipping (depending on the destination). (dr)

Uni-Joy (ANF)

Announcement: UniTHOR - A new joystick for Amigas and modern devices
Uni-Joy LLC, based in Skarżysko-Kamienna, Poland, has announced a new joystick at the title link, weighing half a kilogram and promised to consist of durable microswitches. So far just existing as a 3D-printed prototype, there will be two variants of UniTHOR - either with a classic DB9 connector or for USB. Furthermore, customers will have the choice between the standard version ("Basic") and an assembly set ("Assembler"), with the latter allowing some customisation.

For the production run, a Kickstarter campaign for crowdfunding is planned. Below you can read the official press release:

UniTHOR - a new joystick for classic Amigas is coming

We've developed UniTHOR - a new joystick for classic Amigas and other computers of the era - with a solidly performing and tested prototype, we're ready to present it to the world.

In a nutshell:
  • It's not available for sale yet - we have 20+ 3D-printed prototypes
  • It will come in two versions - with DB9 and USB connector
  • Nicely clicking, durable microswitches
  • There will be two variants - Basic (coming first) and Assembler (custom model)
  • We'll be launching a Kickstarter campaign - aiming late February 2022
  • Price hasn't been set yet. If we were to sell today, it would probably be ca. 60 EUR per piece, but you know how things are these days (inflation, supply chain bottlenecks...)
More info can be found on our website (it may have a few navigation glitches that we'll iron out asap - we're more into joysticks than websites ;).
Meanwhile, you're welcome to have a look at the first promo vid, recently posted on YT. Quite a few familiar themes to be spotted. :) (snx)

Xmas puzzle: Shuffling Around the Christmas Tree
If you still need some support to get into the right Christmas mood or maybe want to do some puzzling on the Amiga together with the family after unwrapping the presents: Shuffling Around the Christmas Tree by the demo group Desire not only reached second place at the Syntax Demopoarty at the end of November, but could also perform this little Christmas miracle.

This interactive puzzle slideshow presents artwork by Terry Redlin. After a short display time of the respective picture, the pieces are mixed up. Now you have to try to restore the picture:

You use the mouse to move the arrow at the edge of the image to the row or column that should be moved and then perform the action by pressing the mouse button. The puzzle is available as adf-version and as HD-version as exe-file. The adf version requires an Amiga 500 with 512 KB of chip RAM, while the HD version requires 1 MB of RAM for it to boot from harddisk. (dr)

WinUAE 4.9.0: Setting up the Voodoo3 RTG emulation for AmigaOS 4.1, part 1
At the beginning of March we reported for the first time that for the Amiga emulator WinUAE the emulation of the Voodoo3 graphics card is in development. This was then already made available in the beta versions.

With the release of the official version 4.9.0 the other day, this emulation is now officially introduced. So far I had defined a Zorro III board with uaegfx for the emulation of AmigaOS 4.1. Now I wanted to find out, also driven by a request in the forum, how the Voodoo3 emulation can succeed and whether it brings advantages for working with AmigaOS 4.1. With the friendly support of WinUAE developer Toni Wilen - thank you very much - and a little bit of my own investigative spirit, this task was basically mastered. However, I would like to emphasise that I am not a WinUAE expert, so comments and possible suggestions for improvement are very welcome for the benefit of all.

First of all the 'PCI bridgeboard' must be configured. For the Voodoo3 emulation, a Mediator, Prometheus or G-REX board can be used. The special thing about AmigaOS 4 is that all the necessary drivers are already included in the operating system. In contrast to the use for the AmigaOS 3 emulation, where among other things the BIOS ROM of the Voodoo 3 board must be added as a file. The same is true of the RTG driver Picasso96, now trading as P96.
'PCI bridgeboard' can be found under 'Expansions':

As is so often the case, you should also pay attention to the trivial things and check the 'Enabled' box. Otherwise, you can save your configuration as often as you like: the setting will be lost.
Then you can select the Voodoo 3 graphics card under 'RTG board':

If all this has worked, you should see the following under 'Hardware info', as Toni Wilen wrote: "It should list 2 Mediator boards, 'parent' and 'child' board with Voodoo 3 under the 'child'": board. :

That was it and it can be booted. I am omitting a screenshot of the Workbench that now appears: The resolution cannot look good because nothing has been defined yet. For the definition of the monitor type under Devs/Monitors I copied my uaegfx monitor and changed the name and the tooltype accordingly:

That was still easy. Now one or more screen resolutions have to be defined under Prefs/Picasso96Mode. I have never had anything to do with Picasso96 before - I would not call it intuitive after my current experience. I cheerfully click on the upper left icon, under which 'New Item' appears. Yes, but nothing happens. Only with the help of a YouTube video, in which the person fittingly failed to get it to work correctly, did I learn that you have to hold down the left mouse button and then drag the icon into the first window:

Then go to the menu 'Attach setting to' and select the Voodoo3 board.

And for each subsequent window, drag the 'New Item' icon from the top into the same window and adjust the resolution to your own monitor. Once everything has worked, you should find the new screen mode under Prefs/ScreenMode:

In a second article we will look at what added value this has brought us compared to the previous configuration. (dr)

Retro gaming: WHDLoad 18.7
Using WHDLoad, you can install games, scene demos and intros from cracking groups to your harddisk that were only working from floppy disks previously. Version 18.7 provides the following changes:
  • new: if a kickstart is requested by the Slave (ws_kickname) WHDLoad provides the current default keymap as a virtual file called 'WHDLoad.keymap' kickemu kick13.s and kick31.s got a new option called SETKEYBOARD which loads and activates the 'WHDLoad.keymap'
  • fix: avoid a possible crash if no kickstart image could be found
  • chg: the check for a read-only filesystem to ignore write operations now checks the first data directory instead the current directory of WHDLoad
  • new: sources/whdload/lowlevel.s has been added to be used with kickemu, it is based on the OS3.1 lowlevel.library and provides a way to avoid the disk based library and save some memory, the kickemu option INIT_LOWLEVEL uses it now instead loading the disk based library
  • fix: corrected the key repeat fix in kick31.s
  • chg: resload_ListFiles no longer requires a switch to the OS if Preload was able to cache all files by using the file cache to fill the buffer with filenames
  • new: support for virtual filesystem plugins (VFS) added, if one of the Data/K objects specified is not a directory but a file WHDLoad will attempt to load PROGDIR:WHDLoad.VFS and uses this interface to load data for such data objects, the VFS-ABI/API is described in "include/whdvfs.i", a VFS implementation which currently supports lha and zip-archives can be obtained from http://github.com/temisu/WHDLoadArchiveFS Thanks a lot to Teemu Suutari for his great work! VFS objects are always read-only for WHDLoad, so either use SavePath/K or a first data directory which isn't VFS to allow WHDLoad to save something
  • fix: cursor down in the CLI usage message is working again in the standard AmigaShell (issue #5146)
  • chg: DIC 1.2: if a track has a read error and option Skip is active and the device is controlled by trackdisk.devices, DIC switches to sector reads now to be able to read more good data in case not all sectors on this track are unreadable
  • chg: WHDLoad now returns with an error code = 5 if the Preload operation has been canceled by pressing the Esc key while the splash window is open (issue #5171)
  • chg: a new option NoWriteInfo/N has been added as local and global option, if set WHDLoad will not update/write any .info files (issue #5153)
  • chg: WHDLoad now resets custom.serper on exit to stop a possible MIDI/MT32 playback via the serial line (JOTD)
  • new: option WriteCache/S added to overwrite global option NoWriteCache/S (issue #5263)
  • new: WHDLoad is now able to cache also write operations to new created files or existing files which grow in size. For that the option PreLoad must be active and there must be enough memory available to preload all files. WHDLoad will then allocate the largest free memory block remaining and use this memory to dynamically cache new files or growing existing files. The cached files are written to disk on WHDLoad exit.
  • new: kick31.asm can be enabled to activate internal resident command WHDCtrl which supports to quit WHDLoad ATM

Hyperion Entertainment released AmigaOS 3.2.1
Press release: Hyperion Entertainment CVBA is proud to provide the first free update of AmigaOS 3.2. It demonstrates our dedication to ensure that AmigaOS 3.2 is the most capable and most stable operating system ever for the 68K based Amigas. If you have do not already own a copy of AmigaOS 3.2, there is now even more reason to get one from your favourite dealer!

AmigaOS 3.2.1 fixes several bugs and additionally comes with new features. The team of developers and testers have worked ever since the release of AmigaOS 3.2 fixing bugs and implementing new features. They have read social platforms for user anecdotes, videos and reviews, and are excited by the positive reception and feedback.

The AmigaOS 3.2.1 update is available now!

While no new ROM images are provided, we do not suggest that you go buy new ROMs. If you are already using some kind of MapROM solution or if you or a friend have an EPROM burner, then go ahead. But it is possible that more ROM changes be rolled out in AmigaOS 3.2.2 so for everyone else we suggest that you use the file-based updating instead.

Here are the highlights of the new features and fixes of AmigaOS 3.2.1:
  • Fixes to almost every single gadget and image class
  • Fix to clipboard.device that since AmigaOS 3.1.4 would not handle clips above 16KB in some cases
  • Important fix to locale.library that would convert signed values to unsigned

AmigaOS 4: Port of editor 'Lite XL' announced
George Sokianos, author of the AmigaOS 4.1 application MediaVault, has announced that he has started porting the editor Lite XL, which originated in the Linux world. About his motivation and the current development status he wrote the following:

"Recently I started creating a couple of plugins for CubicIDE, trying to make it work the best way for my needs. Although CubicIDE is a 68k application it is working quite well on AmigaOS 4 and it is really fast. But it has some quirks here and there, like, for example, there is no way to show the space characters, and for projects like python sometimes this is crucial. But currently, CubicIDE is my beloved editor for development.

I also started working on porting another editor from the Linux world, called Lite XL. This one is based on lite, which as its name implies, it's a very simple small editor, but it is not maintained anymore. The reason, based on its developer, is that it has all the features he wanted, and it is finished. To be honest I rarely hear about a project being finished. Abandoned yes, but finished?

Lite XL development is quite active, getting more and more features on every release. This editor is based on Lua, SDL and plain C, except for a couple of libraries it uses which are in C++. Which makes it an interesting project to work with. It is quite fast and light and has a lot of the features most people are looking from an editor in modern computing. And for me, it gives me a good opportunity to work with technologies that I didn't have the chance to use before.

Currently, the version I am working on is 1.16, and the reason is that since v2 new libraries were introduced, that are not available on AmigaOS 4. So, before I start working with these libraries, I wanted to know if I am able to port an older version and make it work. If I will not succeed, there is no reason for me to try the newer versions.

I am also developing it in a way that the minimum amount of changes are done in the code, by introducing platform-specific files, where all the necessary methods are going to be stored, like those that have to do with paths and filesystem.

As you read these lines, I have Lite XL running on AmigaOS 4.1 FE. It can load files and save them. The scrolling is quite fast on my X5000 even for big text files, and I want to test it on another system. I am curious how it will work on my μAmigaOne.

But, unfortunately, there are other things that are not working yet, like the keyboard shortcuts. And this is what I need to do the following days.

As soon as this is finished, the code and all the changes will be available on one of my Git repositories, for everyone to have access to, and a release will be done. I hope that this won't take long." (dr)

Emulator: QEMU 6.2.0 released
A week ago version 6.2.0 of the emulator QEMU was released. We had described at the beginning of May in an excursion to the use of Amiga operating systems on non-native hardware how to use the operating system MorphOS under QEMU. With the release of the latest QEMU version, bugs in the USB emulation have now been fixed and some minor improvements in Pegasos2 support have been integrated:
  • Suppress warning when qtest enabled
  • Implement power-off RTAS function with VOF
  • Add constants for PCI config addresses
  • Access MV64361 registers via their memory
  • Implement get-time-of-day RTAS function
  • Warn when using VOF but no kernel is
  • Restrict memory to 2 gigabytes
