HP Leads the Sales Charts for the Pocket PC Market Segment
Hewlett-Packard is at the top of Pocket PC sales charts, with 3 million IPAQs sold so far worldwide. HP was also able to begin this great success in the PDA market in 2002. As the worldwide #1 in the Windows Pocket PC market HP has reached a market share of 52 percent, according to previous statistics from Gartner Dataquest.

These numbers show a steady growth in market share by HP for all four quarters in the last year, thereby remaining the second largest producer of PDAs worldwide. According to the figures from Gartner HP sold about 1.6 million units in the last year. From the third to the fourth quarter HP clearly grew more quickly than the market in general, with sales growing from 292,850 in the third quarter to 438,069 in the fourth.

From there HP was able to break the three million mark and show a thoroughly successful result of their post-merger plans. The three million milestone was reached nine months after the two million milestone, which came eight months after the merger with Compaq was finalized.

HP introduced an innovation in handhelds in November 2002 - the HP iPAQ Pocket PC H5450 was the first to have biometric security functions, wireless LAN networking capabilities and Bluetooth functionality. (nba) (Translation: dm)

Game: FlagSweeper v0.5b
Olaf Köbnik writes:
With FlagSweeper version 0.5b is a new tiny minesweeper game by Richard "DawnBringer" Fhager at this homepage (title link) online. This is an early version! Richard told me by the way, he still works on the Akanoid clone "BabeAnoid" but doing it slowly!

After Richard thought of abandon further development due to a lack of feedback I would like to ask you for letting the programmer know if you like the program. This is also valid for "BabeAnoid", just let the programmer know.

Richard Fhager is known for his freeware games like dawnVideoPoker, Spaceball2000, Tittris or Fnurr2000. (ps) (Translation: ub)

News from Paul Burkey's "Sneech"
Paul Burkey writes on his Sneech-homepage: If you've been to this page before, you may have noticed the Sneech page has now been redesigned and brought into my current game development style. I've recently been working on various small scale game projects including two puzzle games called BoXiKoN and WordOMatic. These games marked a return to independent game development as well as a first entry to Windows and Pocket PC game development. I had hoped to be working on Sneech quite some time ago but the project has been pushed back so many times. I still don't have a clear timeline for Sneech development because I have so many other development commitments but I am able to clear up some details of a future for Sneech.

My first aim is to recreate the Classic Sneech game almost exactly as it was on the Amiga 10 years ago. There will of course be some obvious changes, the graphics will be redrawn in True Colour (16bit/32bit) and the resolution will be doubled to 640x480 (Modern Retro Size!). There will undoubtedly be other changes but I want to try and create a Sneech game that is as faithful to the original as possible. I will also be developing this game for Pocket PC and I expect mobile phone versions also, I'm particularly interested in SmartPhone and Symbian based phones. The aim of this project is to create the ultimate retro style Snake Game across many platforms. Sneech will be available for Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, Microsoft Pocket PC and Linux and any other platforms I can get my hands on!

Sneech 2 is still planned and will include many changes to the original game including Network mode and (optional) 3D/OpenGL mode. Other changes will include: Variable size game arenas, New CPU players with advanced AI, Up to 16 Worms in each game, New objects such as bridges and tunnels, New bonus items and much more. Development of Sneech 2 will not start until the Sneech remake is completed so this is all way off at the moment. (nba) (Translation: nba)

Mai Logic Inc. earns "Ready for IBM Technology" Validation
FREMONT, CA. February 10, 2003. Mai Logic Incorporated, a technology design house of integrated circuits/systems, announced today that it has achieved "Ready For IBM Technology" validation for its Articia S system controller and Teron CX and Teron PX evaluation system boards for IBM's 750CXe and 750FX PowerPCTM processors based applications.

"MAI Logic has successfully developed optimized supporting devices and reference designs for PowerPCTM microprocessor application platforms which have passed a rigorous PowerPCTM compatibility validation testing process by IBM Microelectronics labs," said Lisa Su, Director of PowerPCTM and emerging products, IBM Microelectronics. "Solutions like MAI's 'Ready for IBM Technology' chipset and evaluation systems give developers more ways to enhance their applications, resulting in improved time to market, more cost effective designs, and improved performance products by our OEM customers."

"We at MAI are very excited about this latest achievement," said Jason Hou, CEO of Mai Logic, Inc. "We will continue working closely with IBM to better our product designs and development following IBM's PowerPCTM processor roadmap. By leveraging the strong ties we have with our manufacturing partners in Taiwan and the close relationship with the leading developers worldwide, MAI intends to deliver the most cost-effective, highest-quality PowerPCTM offerings to the traditional PowerPCTM market place and expanding it into new applications presently not in the PowerPCTM application domain. This validation will further enable IBM's and MAI's customers to accelerated time to market coupled with significantly reduced resource deployment and management costs."

Articia S
Articia S is the first in the Articia family of chipsets designed with the revolutionary "Bus-Centric" methodology to achieve a more balanced and efficient architecture serving both CPU and peripheral bus requirements. Articia S can support single- or dual-processors at 133MHz CPU bus speed. It is also the first commercialized system controller to provide AGP support for RISC processor based systems. Next-generation Articia Sa and Articia P will soon be available. For product details, please visit: http://www.mai.com.

Teron
Teron CX and Teron PX evaluation systems are generic ATX motherboards built with PowerPCTM processors. The former is the first PowerPCTM processor based board with enhanced AGP option and the latter equipped with a 300-pin MegArray connector, provides easy configuration to a range of development platforms driven by single-processor and dual-processor CPU module cards (including the latest PowerPCTM 750FX processor).

The "Ready for IBM Technology" program is developed to help OEMs identify hardware or software of IBM Business Partners that have received validation with IBM's products. Eligible participants must complete the validation process to obtain the approval and use of the "Ready for IBM Technology emblem as well as to further distinguish their product listings in the IBM Global Solutions Directory. For more information, please go to: http://www-3.ibm.com/chips/products/wired/alliances/rfit.html.

e.p.i.c.: Puzzle game BoXiKoN finished for MorphOS
The addictive puzzle game BoXiKoN from e.p.i.c. interactive has been finished for MorphOS. Originally developed for the Amiga computer this game has become very popular on other desktop and handheld platforms including Macintosh, PocketPC and Windows.

BoXiKoN is a fun and addictive new puzzle game of strategy and logic. The game belongs to the family of shape games but BoXiKoN really is quite different. There is a large emphasis on planning, organization and selection and less on arcade style quick reactions. You can find out more on BoXiKoN in the projects section of the e.p.i.c. homepage (see title link). (ps)

Get your Amiga "Boing" water tank!
Your Amiga is not complete if you don't have your own 'Boing' Water Tank!

By following the title link, you will see something that looks familiar. They [American Models] call it an "Automatic water tank" but we Amigans know better: It's really a 'Boing' water tank!

This is not intended to be an advertisement for American Models (a model railroad supplier), but just in case you do like it and want to have one, you'll know where you can buy one... (it's item #772). (ps)
