Overview: The world of non-C operating systems As an online portal, The Register provides news and analysis from the world of technology companies. In a recent article, the authors explore the question of what current commercial operating systems exist that were written before C was invented or that do not use the C programming language at any level or layer. They explain that the Basic Combined Programming Language (BCPL), a compiled, system-oriented programming language developed by Martin Richards in 1966 and first implemented at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the spring of 1967 (cf. Wikipedia entry) , was by no means just an insignificant transitional step, since it was used in two famous operating systems: so also in the TRIPOS operating system, which was later used as the original basis of AmigaOS. Furthermore, an overview of programming languages and OSes based on them is given, for example Lisp with the OS Mezzano, Interim or ChrysaLisp. (dr) [News message: 03.
