SCSI-SD adapter: ZuluSCSI firmware V2023.06.13
ZuluSCSI is a new generation of file-based SCSI hard disk and CD-ROM drive emulators (review of an user). ZuluSCSI emulates a SCSI-I or SCSI-2 hard disk using an SD memory card (amiga-news.de reported). Changes of version 2023.06.13:
  • Fix CD-ROM leadout LBA with BIN/CUE images
  • CDROM: Mode page 0x2A, READ TRACK INFORMATION, and GET CONFIGURATION
  • Akai MPC3000 compatibility fix: Add the ability to delay boot. Set System=MPC3000 in your zuluscsi.ini file. This is only necessary on ZuluSCSI RP2040 hardware, and not with ZuluSCSI V1.

Crowdfunding for retro community "Amiga Global Alliance" canceled
David Pleasance - ex-Commodore UK management, author of several Commodore books and regular guest at various Amiga events since 2015 - had launched a new project with his "Amiga Global Alliance" ("AGA") at the beginning of June, which was to be financed via a Kickstarter campaign (amiga-news.de reported). As he now informs in an update under the title link, he has decided to cancel the Kickstarter campaign after various critical feedback. He hopes that with this decision he can "mend any fractures" that have arisen in the Amiga community as a result of the campaign. (dr)

Adventure: "The Oregon Trail" in development
Sami Vehmaa - among other things, start bar QDock or maze game Cube - has started a new game project: "The Oregon Trail" (YouTube video of a live presentation) is set in 1847 and is a text-based adventure game. The goal is to survive the 2040-mile east-west wagon route, a journey that lasts about half a year. Food must be rationed, you have to hunt, trade and cross rivers, with the survival of the group having priority.

The chosen game character (banker, carpenter or farmer) determines the level of difficulty of the game, which ends when the travel group is eliminated or one has reached Oregon. An Amiga (or Amiga emulator) with a graphics card (960 x 540 in windowed mode) and 30 MB free RAM are required. (dr)

Developer diary: "Settle the World" 06/23
Christian 'TheoTheoderich' Wiegel continues to work on his turn-based building and trading game "Settle the World" (amiga-news.de reported). His latest developer diary entry is about the implementation of an election system and a hapiness system:

"I started a large restructuring of the game. The goal is to include elections and a better happiness system. This is a lot of work that will take many weeks.

At the moment, the game is far too easy and offers no challenge. Computer opponents and natives will be a challenge later on....but there is still a long way to go.

Before that, an election system will be built in. If the player loses an election, the game is over for him. To achieve this, the needs system of the inhabitants and their happiness must be reworked.

The first thing to be done is the happiness/needs display, which has been completely rewritten. It looks almost the same as before, but works a little differently.

In the future, higher classes of inhabitants will need more and different food. This is where farms and grapes come into play.

Grapes are a pure bonus resource, similar to gold. Wine can only be harvested on these bonus squares, not on other squares. Farms are needed to harvest and process grapes.

Farms function like small towns, but without citizens and their needs. Grapes can later be processed into wine here. Wine is a luxury good for the aristocratic class and increases their happiness, which is an advantage later in the elections.

But farms should not only be able to process grapes, they should also produce meat. Meat is additional food for the aristocratic class as well. Cattle should be able to be kept on a farm and processed into meat by a butcher.

Unlike wine, however, meat does not increase the aristocrats' happiness, but is a basic requirement. So that all this can be produced, there will probably be four new units in the game:
  • Cowboy, for cattle breeding on a farm
  • Butcher, processes cattle into meat
  • Grape picker, harvests grapes from the corresponding bonus fields
  • Winegrower, processes grapes into wine
The whole thing is not yet fully thought out and tested. The farms are still a work in progress....but things are moving forward." (dr)

Module player: NostalgicPlayer 2.0.0 for Windows
NostalgicPlayer is a program for playing Amiga music modules under Windows, based on APlayer. The development of the player had been started by the author Thomas Neumann in 1993 on the Amiga, later continued on BeOS and now on Windows (amiga-news.de reported).

Version 2.0.0 includes the following changes:
  • Updated to .NET 7.
  • Updated SharpCompress to version 0.33.0.
  • The different players return a list of frequencies for each note. This is used by the Piano visual to show which note is playing. Each player support different number of octaves, and before, they was centered in the middle of the piano. This has been changed, so the same note (same frequency) is shown on the same key for every players.
  • Added tool tip in the Module Information window for Module format and active player. The tool tips show the description of the format/player.
  • Fixed a bug, which made some MED modules that contains multiple octave samples fail to load.
  • Improved the AHX player to use channel mode instead of its own mixer. This makes the Piano and Spinning Square visualizers to work with these modules.
  • Made a big change on how the song position is shown and navigated. Before, the position reflects the players position list and which position in this list is currently being played. This may cause some confusion, specially with players which has position loops like SoundMon and DigiBooster. This has now been changed, so the position reflects the time into the song. Each position is a 3 seconds step. This means, when moving the slider or pushing the rewind/forward buttons, you move in time and not the position list. To not remove the old information, it has been moved into the module information window. This has also been expanded with currently playing pattern/tracks.
  • Written my own control to handle the module list in main window. This make all the operations on the list a lot faster than before, special with big lists.
  • Now there won't be created an extra process for every file you double click on in File Explorer to add them into the module list. This fix also speed up the processing of the files, so they are added faster.
  • When adding a lot of files to the module list at once, e.g. the whole modland archive, it did take a loooooong time to process. This has been speeded up a lot, so all the in-deep scanning is done in a background thread if enabled in the settings.
  • Added new option to remove files from the module list which cannot be recognized.
  • Ported mpg123 to C# to get rid of the CPU dependencies. In the process, I also added support for the Free Format (rarely used, find examples on my webpage).
  • Fixed a bug that may cause the program to hang when closing down and a double-buffering module has been loaded.
  • Restricted the module length for 15-samples mod files to prevent false positives. Unfortunally, this change make a couple of modules on modland undetectable because they have a lot of extra data at the end. I have fixed those modules on my webpage, so if you find such modules, try to see if you can find the fixed version there.
  • Added support for ARM processors.
  • Updated libsidplayfp to version 2.5.0.
  • Renamed the MED format to MED 2.10 (MMD0).
  • Added these new module formats: DigiBooster Pro 2.x (with support of echo), DigiBooster 3.x, DigiBooster 1.x (with support of "robot" effect), MED 1.12, MED 2.00, MED 2.10 (MED4), David Whittaker.
An installation package can be found on Microsoft Store. (dr)

Videoplayer: Amos Anim Player V2023.06.08
The "Amos Anim Player" of the group "ELECTRIC BLACK SHEEP" is a very simple IFF-ANIM player that runs on any Amiga. It can play compressed IFF-Anim formats synchronised with a separate IFF Audio Sample (or MOD) (amiga-news.de reported).
To reduce the amount of data to be processed, and because the animation could crash if the decoded animframe exceeded 40Kb, an Amos programme was included that creates a new image sequence from a given source, reducing the movement between consecutive frames in a scaleable way, as the visual needs of the animation. This can save a lot of data with a relatively small loss of quality. The sample animations can be found under the name ".Reduced".

As the developer continues, Ham6 is neither easy to handle nor designed for this kind of manipulation, which is why one must expect visual errors. The visual result would remind on DIVX videos from the past. (dr)

Floppy disk images on PC and Mac: Greaseweazle Tools 1.13
Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" does - similar to Kryoflux - read the magnetic information on a floppy disk independently from the format used and saves as much information as possible to generate a so-called "Flux Level Image" in Supercard format (SCP), which enables reading and back-writing of copy-protected disks (amiga-news.de reported)

The adapter gets connected between a floppy disk drive - e.g. a standard 3.5" PC one - and a USB port of the PC or Mac. Version 1.13 of the Greaseweazle Tools provide the following changes:
  • Generate a x64 Windows build in addition to x32
  • New disk formats:
  • Generic IBM track scanner: ibm.scan
  • General Music: gem.1600
  • TRS CoCo OS-9, MM/1 OS-9: coco.os9.*, mm1.os9.*
  • Commodore 1571 (C64) GCR: commodore.1571
  • New image formats:
    • D71: C64 CBMDOS GCR 1571 double-sided disk
    • TD0: IBM sector format (Read only)
    • EDSK: Support writing new EDSK images (gw read --format=ibm.scan my.edsk)
  • gw read/write: New option --dd to set interface pin 2 for 5.25" drives
  • C64: New low-pass filter PLL stage to clean up noisy flux images
    • Can also be used more generally via a new sub-option to "--pll"

Game updates: ArtPazz 1.8, Follix 1.6, Ring around the World 1.2
Simone 'saimo' Bevilacqua has updated his games ArtPazz (puzzle game where jumbled pieces of a classic painting have to be pushed back), Follix (a puzzle game inspired by Atomix, only here letters have to be lined up) and "Ring around the World" (point'n'click adventure about a supposedly drowned man with memory loss).

The games also serve as an application test of his AMOS Layers System. Changes are limited to a recompilation with its current version and bugfixes. (snx)

Crowdfunding: Retro joysticks "Immortal Joysticks"
On Kickstarter, Andrew (Amiga for Mortals) has started the crowdfunding of his self-designed and so far custom-built joystick "Immortal Joysticks" to enable series production (YouTube video). Around 29,000 euros must be collected for this purpose by 07 July. Features of the joystick:
  • Aluminium alloy enclosure
  • Authentic Sanwa Denshi and Seimitsu arcade parts
  • Braided cable
  • Standard moulded DB9 connection
  • Switchable auto-fire
  • Switchable 'up to button 2' mapping (up still functions normally)
  • Zero-latency
  • Enclosure size 145 x 121 x 39mm
  • Hand-built in the UK
After initial discussions with suppliers, the housings will most likely be black, but the buttons, ball top, dust cover and cable braid should be customisable in colour. The colour selection will be made as soon as all final production details are confirmed. (dr)
