AmigaOS 4.0 July 2007 Update Available
Press release:
Leuven, Belgium - 18. July, 2007

Hyperion Entertainment VOF is pleased to announce the immediate availability for download for registered customers of another service update of Amiga OS 4.0 which addresses some outstanding issues and introduces substantial new functionality.

The new functionality includes:
  • A new ExecSG kernel. The new kernel includes, among other things:
    • Support for guard-page protected stacks. Stacks will have guard pages at their bottom to prevent programs to write over innocent memory
    • A new semaphore-type called Mutex that is Forbid-Free.
    • Support for the new pthreads-module
  • A new library that supports most of the POSIX thread (pthreads) API A new ELF library that implements UN*X-type shared objects and dynamic linking. Shared objects are files that are loaded during runtime of a program and become part of the program's memory image. They have access to symbols and procedures of the main program as well as any other shared object loaded.
  • Amiga Python 2.5.1 is a brand-new port of the Python language interpreter. This port is implemented as a shared object, so other programs can easily interface with it. See the Python Homepage.
  • The latest version of the Sirion USB stack
  • Numerous bug fixes. Please consult the included documentation for more details.

We once again wish to take this opportunity to reassure our customers that development of Amiga OS 4.x continues apace on a number of platforms. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Amiga Future: web site updated, new sections added
Press release: The Amiga Future homepage has got a comprehensive update the last few days:

The article database has been technically updated. The number of pages will not be displayed one below the other but next to the other. So there's no need for scrolling. The font size has been fixed aswell. Furthermore the search engine works properly in the article database again. Using the article database you can read about roughly 1500 articles on the Amiga Future homepage.

A new links database has been installed. All links from the old database have been transferred to the new one. Many thanks at this point to Robin who has realized the old database. Now we want to expand the new database further. Have we chosen suitable section names? Are there any missing sections? Missing links? Then please write us.

Also newly installed is the calendar on the Amiga Future homepage. Here you can find all important appointments of the Amiga scene worldwide. Registered users are able to add their own dates and appointments to the calendar database just like adding articles to the article database.

We hope that you like the new expansions of the Amiga Future page and that you'll contribute to them. Besides that we will have a new FAQ and lexicon the next days.

At this point many thanks go to Trima and Marco for their support. (cg) (Translation: cg)

  • Removed alot of un-needed code, to gain usable memory (GnoStiC and cmf)
  • Optimized code to gain speed (GnoStiC)
  • Added alot of defines to gain speed (FOL and GnoStiC)
  • Added define to allow 10.5MB of memory, not limited to 6MB anymore (FOL and cmf)
  • Changed the delay and latency on sound to gain speed (FOL)
  • Changed PSPUAE cpu cycle unit to 1, gave stable speed increase (FOL)
  • Removed 0 from Auto Frame Skip, pointless as it slows emu down when hitting 0 (FOL)
  • Removed Interpol code as it was broken since 0.60, removing this gave speed increase (GnoStiC)
  • Fixed memory selection, now only valid amiga memory configs are selectable (cmf)
  • Fixed Crash, where if no Backdrop was present PSPUAE would crash PSP (FOL and cmf)
  • Fixed Interrupts setting in sound, as it was still produing sound (FOL and GnoStiC)
  • Added AutoZoom check to PSPUAE reset command, so each reset will turn off AutoZoom. This stops the crash with certain configs, when AutoZoom was on. Simply Press and hold L & R Trigger and SELECT after reset to turn it back on (FOL)
  • Removed support for E / X-Loader and Tiff exploits as it was causing crash in Custom Firmware's. A seperate E / X-loader tiff version is released seperately (FOL)

Roland Heyder (ANF)

RandomWBPatt: Error correction
Roland 'RhoSigma' Heyder points out that in the current version 5.410 of his program RandomWBPatt, a runtime error ("Unexpected Runtime Error") can come by.

This error can be corrected by deleting the #?.done file(s) in the SYS:Prefs/Presets directory.

The background is a format change of these files compared with the previous version. The author apologizes for having neglected to point this out in the documentation.

RandomWBPatt is a CLI program that changes the file entries in WBPattern.prefs in the ENV:sys directory at certain time intervals and thus prompts IPrefs to update the Workbench with the new pictures. (snx) (Translation: cad)

Movie Tron celebrates 25th anniversary
In 1982 Disney`s Tron started in the cinemas. The movie is about a programmer (played by Jeff Bridges) who gets "digitized" and finds himself inside a computer where he is forced to play the gladiatorial games he wrote. Tron was something of a milestone for computer-generated imagery.

After 25 years Computerworld spoke with John Knoll, a visual effects supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic. Knoll served as visual effects supervisor for such films as Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Trek: First Contact and Mission: Impossible.

The racing game which got famous from the film is available as Open-Source for several platforms as GLtron. (nba) (Translation: dr)
