FPGA based Amiga clone: AmiCube, Board-Layout Version 1.1
Ranko Rodic presents the current status of his FPGA-based Amiga clone AmiCube F1200 in a video. The changes made are explained using a rendering of version 1.1 of the board layout:
  • MOSFETs back for level shifting - They're making a triumphant return to handle voltage like champs!
  • Floppy disk module routed like a dream - Everything's neatly tucked into this slick little area - pure engineering art!
  • Tiny 402 components (pick-and-place approved!) - These micro-sized parts are a bold move, and my trusty machine's got it covered.
  • LEDs still shining bright for cell/motor/ready signals - Keeping the visuals popping so you know what's active at a glance!
  • FPGA now gets direct ready signals - sky's the limit in Verilog! - More control, more possibilities - coding just got a whole lot more fun!
  • Polarity sorted, inverters added - active low LEDs light up when they should! - No more guessing games; these lights mean business now!
  • Detect signals for floppy connections = instant LED action! - Plug in a floppy, and bam - LEDs light up to confirm it's go time!
  • Cleaner routing, no more wiggles - just straight-line perfection! - The board's looking sharper than ever with optimized paths.
  • Jumper for 3V/5V switching + better heat dissipation with extra mass - Flexibility and cool vibes - literally thanks to some thermal tweaks!
  • FPGA status LEDs to show when the Amiga core is up & running! - Watch the magic happen as the board boots and the Amiga core kicks in!
  • Decoupling done right this time - followed Spartan-6 datasheets to the letter! - No shortcuts here; it's all by the book for max stability!
  • SRAM (6MB) + SDRAM (64MB) in the works for that sweet retro Amiga RAM vibes! - SRAM keeps it authentic, while SDRAM adds mega power - best of both worlds!
  • AGA core porting is progressing—looking good so far! - The Amiga dream is coming alive, and I’m pumped about where this is headed!

Paperback: Classic AmigaOS Programming - The Network
After Classic AmigaOS Programming - An introduction and Bare Metal Amiga Programming, Edwin Van Den Oosterkamp presents his third paperback on Amiga programming called Classic AmigaOS Programming: The Network. It is about adding network and Internet functionality to Amiga programs and is aimed at people who have some experience with writing software for the Amiga, but have no experience with IP networking. Like its predecessors, the title is self-published via Amazon, a digital edition is not available. (cg)

Emulator: Mame106Minimix 1.2b (update)
The Multi Arcade Machine Emulator (MAME) emulates numerous arcade machines. After conversions for MorphOS and AmigaOS 4 as well as various, mostly older 68k ports, there has been another project for AmigaOS 3.1 since last year with Mame106Minimix, which however requires a very fast computer (68060 processor with 64 MB or actually designed for PiStorm extensions).

The port of MAME version 0.106, which dates back to 2006, is now available in version 1.2 and offers various optimizations, bug fixes and improvements, such as an optional “NewLowLevel” patch, which is required for some Amiga 2000 configurations.

Update: (28.03.2025, 06:10, dr)

Version 1.2b is now available. (snx)

Besides the Italian original issue, the PDF magazine REV'n'GE ("Retro Emulator Vision and Game") is also available in English. The magazine's reviews compare, if available, the different ports of classic games to the various platforms of their time. Furthermore a focus is on rather unknown retro games.

The latest issue 168 contains an MSXdev24 special as well as reviews of four Amiga games: Apocalypse, Super Raid IV, Maths Adventure and Helm. (nba)

An official level editor has now been released for the recently published game Pjusk (amiga-news.de reported, video). The game, in which players have to find their way through a maze strategically, has thus gained a new creative component.

Developer Zoopendan hopes to "see lots of brilliant levels made by the community". Exciting: anyone who submits a level that makes it onto the planned expansion disc will be named in the game.

So now it's up to the community – create levels and become part of the game! (nba)

Seq 3.0: MIDI sequencer for AmigaOS 4 has been updated
The new version 3.0 of the MIDI sequencer Seq by Tuomas Hokka is now available for AmigaOS 4. This simple tool allows you to create and edit MIDI sequences and is aimed at musicians who want to use their Amiga as a compositional tool. The current update includes numerous improvements, including to the user interface and MIDI output.

All changes to version 3.0 summarised:
  • FIXED one major bug in saving project: Too many bytes were written so it was filled with zero bytes and that will break reading one integer value in the project file. This will be fixed automatically in loading project. User will be prompted to choose to save the project immediately after.
  • Fixed bugs
  • New song (long) mode to One time track, added One time banks
  • Increased number of song steps to 96, project files version increased to 9
  • Added more settings to alt/double note
  • Alt notes displayed in steps better
  • Some font sizes increased
  • Added new tooltype to set large font
  • Refactored some parts of the source code for better maintainability and to avoid bugs
Seq is offered as freeware and can be downloaded from OS4Depot. (nba)

A1200NG: New blog and release date
The British developer and distributor AmigaKit has set up a new blog for the announced ARM-based motherboard A1200NG (amiga-news.de reported) to provide information about the product.

The motherboard was originally scheduled to be available in the first quarter of 2025, but the shop now lists April as the release date. The regular price for the board with a 64 GB MicroSD card is the equivalent of around 192 euros.

It is noticeable that the motherboard is referred to as "The A1200 NG" instead of the original announced "A1200NG" in various places on the blog and on the homepage. However, the project has nothing in common with the retro computer THE A1200 announced by Retro Games Ltd. and recently postponed due to legal uncertainties. (nba)

SCSI for Raspberry Pi: SCSI2Pi 5.1
Version 5.1 of the SCSI2Pi emulation software has been released. SCSI2Pi is an alternative to the well-known PiSCSI software for the PiSCSI/RaSCSI board, which brings SCSI technology to the Raspberry Pi. According to developer Uwe Seimet, the software offers optimised device emulation, higher transfer rates and numerous new functions, including tools for the SCSI initiator mode (amiga-news.de reported).

Changes in version 5.1:
  • The INQUIRY product data (vendor, product, revision) for the device type SCSG (e.g. SCSI-to-USB bridge) are configurable, just like they are for other types. The configured data replace the actual data reported by the USB device.
  • The sector cache has been optimized.
  • s2pdump in case of errors supports retries when saving/restoring hard drive images.
The software can be downloaded from the SCSI2Pi-website. (dr)

Worth a read: A history of user interface design
The Swedish technology nerd and software developer Carl Svensson analyzes the development of user interfaces in a new article on Datagubbe.se entitled "Past and Present Futures of User Interface Design" - with a special focus on futuristic interface designs of past decades.

Starting with a look at old books on user guidance and GUI design, the author asks how the often lofty visions of the future from back then (such as touchscreen workstations or holographic interfaces) have developed in reality - or not. Particular attention is paid to the question of whether today's interfaces have actually become simpler and more accessible, or whether they are merely based on new models without really being more efficient.

The blog post is both informative and tongue-in-cheek – and offers exciting insights for anyone interested in design history, interface philosophy or simply digital nostalgia. (nba)
