Frode Solheim is continuing to develop FS-UAE
The Amiga emulator FS-UAE and its associated launcher is a platform-independent version of UAE for Windows, Mac OS X and numerous Linux and BSD variants. The last version of FS-UAE & Launcher, version 3.1.66, was released on 3 January 2022. Now Frode Solheim, the main developer of FS-UAE, has posted a detailed update posted on the English Amiga Board. He admits that he has been overworking himself over the last few years, but assures everyone that he is healthy and will not simply give up on the project without ensuring an orderly handover.
Recently, he has taken the first steps to modernise FS-UAE and OpenRetro:
- Distro-specific builds for current distributions have been created.
- The website fs-uae.net has been migrated to a new host server and the underlying software has been updated.
An upgrade for openretro.org is still pending, whereby old Python 2 code has to be ported to Python 3. He also plans to support newer WHDLoad versions and take a look at the current development of WinUAE 6 to integrate possible improvements into FS-UAE. Despite challenges, he remains motivated and is open to further collaborators, even though the organisational effort for community-driven development should not be underestimated. (nba)

Classic remake "X-Out: Resurfaced" has been published
The Amiga classic X-Out has been relaunched as announced under the name "X-Out: Resurfaced". The remake of the horizontally scrolling shoot ‘em up was published on 20 February 2025 for Xbox, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC. In addition to the digital version, there are also physical special editions for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, which are available exclusively from the developer ININ Games. The gaudy remake offers revised graphics, a remixed soundtrack by Chris Hülsbeck and additional features such as a two-player co-op mode.
The original X-Out game was released by Rainbow Arts in 1990 for the Amiga. It is considered one of the most outstanding horizontally scrolling shoot ‘em ups of its time. Particularly ground-breaking was the shop system, which allowed players to put together their own individually equipped submarine with different weapons and drones before each level. The dark underwater atmosphere, the impressive pixel graphics and the captivating soundtrack by Chris Huelsbeck made X-Out an unforgettable classic of the Amiga era. (nba)

AmigaOS 4: The network printer tool Airprint
After Arild 'mcleppa' Aarbakk had already written a scanner software for AmigaOS 4 with AirScan, he has also been working on a printer tool for AmigaOS 4 based on the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) since the end of 2023. At the end of 2010, Apple developed AirPrint, an extension of IPP, which has become standard on many current printers.
The Internet Printing Protocol provides printing services via a network and includes all the necessary mechanisms such as authentication, access authorisations, encryption, etc. This enables printing without a separate printer driver. In principle, printing is therefore possible without a separate printer driver.
I was able to test the first, early versions, which worked right from the start with my Canon G9000. For the first time since I proudly ran my Canon BJC-4200 with the "legendary" CanonDisk printer driver in the 90s, I was able to print from my Amiga, an AmigaOne X5000.
Initially, the range of functions was still somewhat limited, but gradually more options such as trays, colour, duplex and paper type were added.
SSL support was also added with the last update. The installation process of the tool has now been simplified so that the installer not only copies the necessary files, but also opens the settings window during installation:
The Airprint utility programme is located in the Sys:Prefs/Airprint directory after installation. After starting, a printer is searched for using the "+"...
...and in my case successfully found and added:
For me personally, Arild's very useful application is another important building block for a "complete" AmigaOS 4, but also an example of how you can use AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS together on the AmigaOne X5000 and thus achieve synergies. The DHL shipping label for the parcel was purchased under MorphOS with the Wayfarer web browser and the PDF file was saved on a shared drive, from where I was able to print the label with Airprint. Now that's Amiga fun:
In the Airprint utility itself, PDF, JPEG, text and postscript files can be loaded, converted and then sent to the printer. In addition, the programme should support printing from most Amiga applications, such as Notepad, AmiPDF, AmiGS, Odyssee, IBrowse (please refer to the documentation on activating fonts for printing) or Multiview. For this purpose Airprint communicates with the Amiga printer.device, for which DEVS:Printers/Airprint is required. The data is converted into RGB format. They are then sent to DEVS:airprint.device, which then communicates with the Airprint utility.
The source code of Arild's airprint driver is based on the source code of the HP DeskJet CMYK sample driver, while the airprint.device is based on Chris Young's ipp.device (GitHub link). The developer provided many useful hints on how the devices work together, enabling Arild to develop it further.
The paper size is currently limited to A4 and US Letter. Likewise, the resolution is currently only 150 DPI, converted into pixels this corresponds to 1240 x 1754. In practice, as Arild explains to us, this means that the resolution remains the same when a larger image is sent to the printer, so that you do not yet benefit from higher resolutions. This will change in the future.
The checkbox for the alignment is currently inactive. The image is always aligned so that it fits the paper format selected by the user. This will also be changed later.
Airprint always uses the paper installed in the printer. The selection of the "from to" range works - in future it should be possible to select each page to be printed, not just a range. The "Ink levels" tab shows the ink level of the printer:
As the tool is still in the beta phase, the programme versions are currently only available in the corresponding topic on the Amigans website. The current version is 0.36.

AmigaOS 4: Preview video of GemRB 0.8.8 WIP
GemRB is a reimplementation of BioWare's Infinity Engine, which is used to develop computer role-playing games based on the Dungeons & Dragons rules (e.g. Baldur's Gate). GemRB stands for "Game engine made with pre-rendered background".
After Andrea 'afxgroup' Palmatè's AmigaOS 4 port of version 0.7.2 in 2012 and later ports of version 0.8.8, released in 2021, to MorphOS and AROS, Steffen Häuser is now also adapting the latter to AmigaOS 4. At the title link you will find a preview video. (snx)

Preview from Michal Schulz on PiStorm and Emu68
Michal Schulz and Claude Schwarz have already given us a lot of pleasure with their work on the Motorola68K emulation Emu68 (amiga-news.de reported) and 68K hardware emulation PiStorm32(-lite) (amiga-news.de reported). We asked Michal Schulz to inform us about the current and planned projects:
Framethrower
So far, the RTG emulation has been provided via the HDMI port of the PiStorm and the RGB data supplied by the Denise chip at the RGB port of the Amiga and must be tapped there separately. Since the end of 2023, the two have been working on an extension now called "Framethrower", which also outputs the RGB signal via the PiStorm (camera port) (amiga-news.de reported). As Michal writes, the project is unfortunately not yet finished: "There is a problem with the Tang Nano boards, which Claude is still working on solving. In more detail, this means that due to the design of the Tang Nano 9K, a lot of noise is introduced into the MIPI signal. This leads to either distortions in the transmitted image or the entire synchronisation is lost."
Emu68
For the Motorola68K emulation software Emu68, the new version 1.1 is to be released this year, which will bring some improvements in addition to typical corrections and bug fixes: "For example, cache blocks that are actually removed by the CPU cache flush will be reused. Instead, they will be "recycled" to reduce the compilation time. As a result, macOS, for example, will run much faster under Shapeshifter, and booting the Amiga will also take less time." The first tests have already been carried out and are very promising.
Furthermore, the work on the WiFi driver for Emu68 will be continued (amiga-news.de reported) and, if all goes well, the Ethernet driver for the Pi4/CM4 will be started. If there is enough time, the next project will be USB.
PiStorm16
The first version of the accelerator card for the Amiga 600 (or CM4) (amiga-news.de reported) has been produced in its final version in a quantity of 25 units and will soon be sent to the first users. Shortly afterwards, the project will be released as open source so that it can be produced and sold in larger quantities by various companies and hobbyists.
PiStorm16 is similar to PiStorm32: it uses the same FPGA, the firmware is embedded in Emu68 and is loaded to the PiStorm at startup, so features like the "stealth" mode are possible: by pressing and holding CTRL and the Amiga keys for a few seconds, the Amiga is started in basic mode, without extension.
Other models from the PiStorm16 family, for example for Pi3/Pi4 or for the A500, A2000 etc., will follow.
Future plans
Michal wrote: "We are looking at ways to make hardware that is unsuitable for the PiStorm in the Amiga usable in some form.
In the long term (i.e. not this year), a project is to be developed in which the Amiga chipset is implemented on an FPGA module, for example, and communicates with the processor via a PCIe interface. Yes, PCIe has disadvantages that make it almost unusable for a "classic" PiStorm. But in a scenario where PiStorm is not an interface but an Amiga chipset, the performance might be sufficient. Our work in this direction is running on several levels:
PocketStorm
As a first step, Claude has developed a motherboard for the Pi3/Pi4 that integrates the Amiga chipset (MiniMig) and the PiStorm interface in the Tang Nano 20K. With the help of Emu68, a complete (albeit emulated) Amiga is created.
EFI integration
At the same time, I am working on a start programme for EFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), which will be integrated into Emu68. This would allow Emu68 to be used in some form on EFI-compatible systems.
FPGA + PCIe
In a further step (if we succeed) the Amiga chipset will be implemented on FPGA with a PCIe interface and run with the EFI version of Emu68.
This work does not mean that we give up the classic Amiga! There are still more than enough tasks for PiStorm and Emu68 in Amiga systems. Nevertheless, we also want to explore new avenues and discover further possibilities." (dr)
