Shoot'em Up: Use of the blitter in RESHOOT PROXIMA 3
Ex-"Amiga Joker"-editor Richard Löwenstein is still working intensively on his third shoot'em up. After RESHOOT and RESHOOT R, the title "RESHOOT PROXIMA 3" is currently being developed.
The developer regularly informs about the latest progress on his Patreon page. Thus, in his latest update including video he explains how he combines the conventional 'four-channel cookie cutting' with the fast 'two-channel copy' blitter mode to be able to draw more objects and still keep the targeted screen refresh rate of 50 FPS. Apollo team: change in staff, new accelerator boards annouced
As announced by Apollo team at the title link, Igor Majstorovic, developer of the Vampire accelerator boards, has left the group. On the other hand, Thomas Hirsch returned, the original developer of the former Natami project.
The press release mentions the high workload Igor Majstorovic suffered from manufacturing the Vampire boards. Despite his withdrawal, he will still assume warranties for the cards he sold, though, while obviously the new board "Raptor" is affected. The latter was intended as a reduced version of the Vampire and should have been available in May already.
Instead, Apollo team announced two new accelerator boards. FireBird (for Amiga models 500, 1000 and 2000) and IceDrake (for Amiga 1200), which are based on the Vampire 4 core. At the same time, the Vampire 2 boards have reached their end of sale, remaining PCB and FPGA stock is currently being sold.
The new accelerator boards are announced for Q4 2021/Q1 2022, beginning with FireBird being available first, followed closely by IceDrake - a third board, then for Amiga 4000, would be planned as well. Production will be taking place in Germany and in high volume, thus a quick clearing of waiting lists is expected by the team. Estimated prices have not been mentioned yet.
Features of FireBird and IceDrake:
- Cyclone 5 (FPGA chip of Vampire 4)
- 512 MB DDR3 RAM
- 68080 CPU implementation
- SAGA chipset implementation
- 64-bit AMMX instruction set (accelerated multi media output)
- 165 MIPS
- 16-bit audio
- 100 MBit Ethernet adapter
- two IDE ports for CompactFlash and CD-ROM
- USB joypad support
- real-time clock

Reimplementation of 'Frontier: Elite II'-Intros with browser playback
Mark Watson has reverse engineered the Frontier: Elite II game intro. It implements the full 3d renderer and music playback code from the original in C. The source code is available on GitHub. Features:
- Compiler & decompiler for the game's 3d model format
- Updated 3d models (e.g. added planet sky to intro)
- Engine / sound effects playback
- SDL support (for non-Amiga platforms)
- Support for 2x and 4x times the original display resolution
Mark Watson explained: "DooM is ported to pretty much every platform due to be having a reference implementation in C. I wanted something simalr for FE2 and have always been curious about how the renderer worked. The whole game is not ported because, well.. that would require a ton more work, and maybe Frontier will want to re-release it at some point."
The result of his development now can be also watched in a browser playback: It offers double resolution, scaled up to fit the browser window. (dr)

ALS 1.95: Screen overlay
Simone 'saimo' Bevilacqua has provided "ALS", the AMOS Layers System, a way to layer individual screens of AMOS Professional, specifying the order, colors and degree of translucency (video). The whole thing is written in AMOS and is therefore available as a source code library.
About this version Bevilacqua wrote: "This is the last version that supports also OCS and ECS. ALS v2 will be AGA-only. The reason is that supporting all the chipset requires lots of additional code and also slows down execution in many places, while functionality is still very limited on OCS and ECS due to the fact that they offer only 6 bitplanes and 32 color registers. ALS is much more useful on AGA, so it makes sense to have a leaner and faster version for that chipset. Also, I decided to postpone the release of Follix to after ALS v2 is done, so that the game can benefit from it." Changes:
- Optimized ALS_SET_DISPLAY_COLORS_RANGE_FROM_PALETTE[] and ALS_SET_DISPLAY_COLORS_RANGE_FROM_PALETTE_RANGE[] a little bit.
- Removed wrong comment from ALS_SET_DISPLAY_COLORS_RANGE_FROM_PALETTE[].

For their reimplementation of AmigaOS commands within their Enhancer Software, A-EON Technology have released further updates of their own commands for AmigaOS 3.x and AmigaOS 4: AddBuffers*, AddDatatypes*, Assign*, Copy, List and MakeDir*.
As usual, the new versions can be downloaded by registered customers of Enhancer Software using the Updater software.
Changes:
- AddBuffers 46.3/54.3
- Now temporarily turns off system requesters when using the LIST option
- AddDataTypes 46.6/54.6

- Bugfix: A structure that was freed too soon could cause an illegal memory
access
- Added more checks for out of memory error
- Assign 46.4/54.4
- Improved INHIBIT option: only dos device names with filesystems can now be
inhibited. Also it is no longer possible to make nested inhibits.
Also added messages when a device is successfully inhibited or uninhibited
- Copy 46.8/54.8
- Fixed bug when printing "object not found" error messages for filenames that
don't contain a path
- List 46.8/54.8

- Bugfix: Only lowercase LFORMAT operators were recognised
- MakeDir 46.8/54.8
- Added FORCE option to ignore "object already exists" error
[* = Editor's note: When this news-item was released, those links from A-EON Technology's press release still had no Wiki entries.] (snx)

Point'n Click Adventure: First trailer of "Ermentrud"
Timo Kloss writes: "The point'n'click adventure game 'Ermentrud' has a first trailer. It is not final yet, so criticism is very welcome. 'Ermentrud' was originally developed between 2001 and 2004 for Amigas with a graphics card, but then abandoned. It was set in a medieval world and featured an absurd plot with absurd humor. And the hero had a cardboard marche horse.
This year it will be released after all, though not to the extent planned at the time. It will contain all the original graphics, sounds and music, but the plot will be reworked and "rounded". So far only a German version is planned. It is not yet clear if there will be other languages. The game will be available for free." (cg) (Translation: bb)

A-EON is already internally testing Alpha releases of their own operating system
Allegedly, A-EON's OS4 licenses expired quite some time ago and sources
claim the company is not trying to apply for a new one. amiga-news.de has now
received screenshots from an anonymous source that seem to be from a private
forum A-EON is running for their betatesters. The screenshots show a posting
from late May, in which Matthew 'Amigakit' Leaman announces the availability
of the first Alpha release of "Enhancer Software Release V54". The term
"Operating System" is never used, but Leaman's description clearly refers to
a standalone system.
Leaman refers to the download available to Betatesters as a "Distribution".
It's said to be a bootable ISO image, although the installation instructions
explain how to use an existing AmigaOS 4.1 installation to set the new system
up. The OS modules not yet reimplemented for the Enhancer project need to be
copied from an existing AmigaOS installation into a drawer of the Enhancer
system called 'Legacy:' - the distribution's installer apparently takes
care of that. Leaman's description of the process is like this: "We are no
longer installing the Enhancer Software over the OS 4.1.The OS 4.1 files are
complementing the main Enhancer Software system".
In his announcement, Leaman lists the developers who have contributed to the
project so far (surnames added by amiga-news.de staff where known):
- Classes, Commodities: Daniel, Massimo [Tantignone], Thomas [Frieden?]
- Datatypes-System: Kevin
- Multiview, MultiEdit, X-Dock: Andy [Broad]
- Utilities, preferences, system tools: Fredrik [Wikstrom], Javier, Guillaume [Boesel]
- Neue Sensor-API, rejuvenated Mediatoolbox: Andrea Vallinotto
- Updated versions of Ringhio: Max [Tretene]
- Warp 3D Nova, (upcoming) modernised 2D graphics: Hans [de Ruiter]
- Shell commands: Constantinos
- Icons, other artwork: Martin [Merz]
Other components owned by A-EON such as MediaToolbox, DVPlayer and the
original Warp3D will "of course" (Leaman) also be included in the distribution.
