Farming simulation: Third beta version of Farmiga released
The Polish developer 'Tukinem' is writing a farming simulation in AMOS, called 'Farmiga' (amiga-news.de reported). A few moments ago, the third beta version (03.07.2022) was released. Changes:
- The control of goods purchases and sales is now done completely with the mouse.
- A new mini-game with a cow has been added, where you have to "paw" the fly. On the screen we can see the life bar of the cow and the time the cow has left to live ;-)
- Adding an introductory main menu to the game and a "credits" screen (but only in Polish for now).
- When saving/reading the game, it is possible to select a specific file
Hardware requirements: 1,5MB ChipRAM bzw. 1MB Chip + 0,5MB FastRAM. (dr)

Video interview with DeepMind founder: First AI program on Amiga
At the title link, a video interview was conducted with Demis Hassabis, the co-founder and CEO of the AI company DeepMind, which was later bought by Google.
After his start with a ZX Spectrum, he had, unlike his "merely" Atari-using friends, an Amiga, which he programmed in assembler and AMOS and on which he wrote his first AI program at the age of about twelve, an implementation of the game Reversi, in which he applied principles of chess computer programming.
Also mentioned is his later involvement in the Bullfrog game "Theme Park", to which economic simulation he contributed the behaviour of up to 2000 simulated figures of the theme park at the age of 16. He had programmed these as individual so-called "state machines", which independently satisfy their needs. (snx)

Preview video: Kung Fu action 'Devil's Temple'
Devil's Temple features 10 stages of intense arcade kung fu action based on the classic Irem games Kung Fu Master and Vigilante. Over 300 frames of animation were packed into the game and every cycle of performance was used on the Amiga A500. The game will adapt to upgrades, so additional chip ram will result in better music, AGA will provide additional colors and a greater variety of enemies in the game.
Yesterday, a new preview video was released for the game that is currently in development. As the developer writes, he had assumed to release Devil's Temple in May or June, but he just didn't have the necessary time to finish the game. The current progress is shown in the latest video:
- The game now has a hiscore system
- The game now has an attract mode
- The game has a menu system included allowing the player to modify game settings
- The background video music is now all included
Only three elements of the game are still missing: the final boss, the coding of the final sequence and the optimization of the code.
The game is already available for pre-order as a boxed edition. Likewise, a demo version of the first stage is available on itch.io.

Article: Achieving period-correct graphics in WinUAE emulator
Some time ago John Novak published a detailed article in his blog that explores how to best display Amiga graphics with today's monitors using the WinUAE emulator.
The point is to experience the Amiga system as users did with original hardware and possibly still do today - as far as today's emulation technology allows. The goal is that the emulated graphics are as close as possible to the output of CRT screens used with the Amigas in the 80s and 90s. The WinUAE Shader Pack is used for this. (dr)

Blog: Introduction of text editor "reED" for AROS and AmigaOS 3
The blog "Amiga alive" not only reports about various software and hardware news, the operator also presents his own, partly older projects in the series AMIGA alive DevLog from time to time. In the latest blog entry, the C-programmer will report about an editor he started a long time ago under the name "proWEB": an HTML editor with advanced features like sophisticated TABLE creation, FRAME management etc. First started for AmigaOS 3, then continued for AROS, but finally stalled.
Development of the editor has now resumed under the name "reED". As the developer reports, "it took me just a day to make all code adjustments from AROS' gcc to AmigaOS' vbcc, including lots of stylistic improvements, and I got a working executable. The code now doesn't use any special compiler features, and should work with gcc, probably SAS-C, etc. just as it does with vbcc. There were a couple of minor differences between AmigaOS and AROS that needed to be taken care of - for example my old AROS system used a font called "ttcourier" instead of "courier"".
"reED" has its own GUI layout engine, it has a large function menu (many functions are not yet implemented), uses ASL file requesters, can edit multiple documents, it can highlight/cut/copy/paste - and it has real tabs with keyboard control.
Even though the editor has been made to work, the developer is still considering whether to continue this project. If, then both AmigaOS 3 and AROS should be supported, whereby he has the hope for an updated vbcc for AROS. As the developer Frank Wille told Amiga-News on request, this is currently not planned. Reason: More than 15 years ago he had created an experimental version. But the official AROS header files are full of gcc-specific (i.e. not ISO-C compliant) instructions and therefore not usable on any other compiler. (dr)

MorphOS: Web browser Wayfarer 3.9
Jacek 'jacadcaps' Piszczek has released version 3.9 of his Wayfarer web browser for MorphOS, which mainly includes changes for media playback. As the author writes, ClearKey encryption is not very popular nowadays, but is still used by some live streaming services. Wayfarer can now play these streams (e.g. https://tv.nrk.no).
The emulation of touch events makes it possible to search on mobile Youtube again. In this regard, the developer refers to the updated FAQ page: instructions on how to fix Youtube/iOS search and how to use a VPN with Wayfarer (with additional hardware) have been added.
Jacek also thanks everyone who had donated to the project in the last. He said that this is a motivation for further development. Changes:
- Implemented ClearKey DRM support for HLS media streams
- Implemented HLS stream quality switching accessible from the media popup
- Added configurable touch events emulation (think Youtube-Mobile seeking slider)
- Refactored the HLS player to allow MPEG-TS playback
- Live HLS streams now start playing closer to the current time
- Improved stream end position reporting to get some streaming services correctly skip to next stream after playing ads
- Updated libcurl

Review: Workbench distribution AmiKit XE 11.8.0 for Windows
About two weeks ago version 11.8.0 of the workbench distribution AmiKit for Windows/Mac/Linux was released (amiga-news.de reported). Our reader Thomas bought the latest version for his Windows computer and kindly tells us his impressions:
"After the purchase, you will receive an e-mail with the download link quite quickly. Before that you should definitely install VcRuntime https://file.amiga.sk/amikit/download/vc_redist.x64.exe, otherwise the installation will fail. The version Amikit 11.5.0 is delivered, which can be updated later. Original Amiga ROMS are necessary, otherwise the installation will fail. In which form or better said from which source the ROM's come, is up to you. Whether Amiga Forever or original AmigaOS (OS 3.1.4, OS 3.2, OS 3.9 etc.) does not matter.
The installation process runs through smoothly. In between, Picasso96 is downloaded and installed independently. After the installation process has run through and Amikit has been loaded, the Morpheus Updater opens automatically. There you can update Amikit 11.5.0 to version 11.8.0. This update is the biggest one (23 MB) and for this reason it seems to cause problems. Always only 12-14 MB arrive. This gave me no peace, so Jan was written to on Discord asking him what the problem could be. He answered promptly and wrote me that a few had the same problem. He then sent me the archive of 11.8.0, since the error could not yet be narrowed down. So I could update to version 11.8.0 myself. Many thanks Jan to the fast and smooth help.
The next step is to install AmigaOS 3.2 and the corresponding update 3.2.1. For this you put all AmigaOS 3.2 ADF's, the Amiga1200.Module, Update3.2.1.lha into the Rabbithole directory and start the Morpheus Updater again. There you can select and install the AmigaOS 3.2 installation. This is done quickly, after an automatic reboot it is freshly installed. So you have the latest AmigaOS running in the WinUAE installation. Amikit uses WinUAE for the AmigaOS emulation on the PC.
So Amikit transforms the PC into a modern Amiga. The Rabbithole is used to start PC programs directly from the AmigaOS. So you can run programs like VLC, Chrome etc. on the screen of the AmigaOS and don't need to switch to Windows. In addition, Amikit is faster than any Amiga hardware depending on the PC model, even if turbo cards etc. are used.
But it will never replace the feeling of real Amiga hardware. But it is not so easy to use it on the go. That's where Amikit makes sense. If you want to use the AmigaOS everywhere, Amikit is a good choice. It is a complete AmigaOS for people with little time and desire to build their own AmigaOS.
For myself it only serves as a replacement to real Amiga hardware. Mainly I use Amikit to transfer files from the PC via NAS to the Amiga and vice versa or when I want to use the AmigaOS mobile. The purchase was worth it."
Herzlichen Dank, Thomas. (dr)

Preview video 27: Souverän Soccer
Daniel 'Daytona675x' Müßener (Wings Remastered, MiniGL4GL4ES, Tower 57) is working on a soccer game with 3D view called "Souverän Soccer" (amiga-news.de reported). According to the developer, "the game still runs on a standard A1200 without turbo card and without Fast RAM in PAL lowres with 50 frames per second."
About his 27. preview video the developer wrote: "This time I concentrated not so much on the ingame playfield engine but more on all that other necessary stuff, mostly the menus and tournament logic. Therefore the new video is maybe a bit boring to watch ;) Nevertheless it's a very huge step forward because from now on "only" the actual match gameplay is missing, everything else is in place (well, apart from bug fixes and polishing and some music and more sfx, of course)." Music editor: MusicMaker V8 Version 3.16
As Thomas Winischhofer told us at the end of October last year, the development of his 'MusicMaker V8' was actually finished. Apparently, however, he always finds the time and inclination to fix minor bugs and to continue to maintain his sample-based music editor, which he started as a hobby project in 1986, so that since version 3.12, the fourth update to version 3.16 has now been released. Changes since our last report:
Version 3.16:
- Relocated prefs file (MM_V8.prefs) from S: to ENVARC:, if the latter exists (which is normally the case under OS2 and later). This also fixes the annoying requester when starting MM under 1.3.
- Installer: Install MM_V8.prefs to ENVARC: if available
- Installer: Ask if prefs file should be overwritten
- Installer: By default, do not install developer kit
- Add install script for AmigaDOS 1.3 since the installer needs >=2.x
Version 3.15:
- Filerequester: Fix long standing and potentially lethal sorting bug
Version 3.14:
- Filerequester:
- Make list display faster
- The path-resolving-bahavior described under the entry for 3.13 below was for OS2 and later. Now MM does the same under 1.3.
Version 3.13:
- Filerequester:
- fix race cond when typing a filename
- No longer resolve assigns when clicking "Parent"

Magnifier tool: Lupe 2.0 for AmigaOS 3 and MorphOS
Matthias "UltraGelb" Böcker wrote: "'Lupe' continously magnifies an area of the screen and displays it in a window. The window can be resized and the scalefactor can be dynamically changed. Per default Lupe follows the mouse pointer and magnifies the area sourrounding the pointer, but it is also possible to have it magnify a freely setable fixed area. It can show colour values of the current pixel under the mouse pointer and also its coordinates. Additionally a grid can be enabled. Furthermore it can save the current window contents as IFF or PNG image."
Minimum requirements are AmigaOS 3.0 for the AmigaOS/68K version and MorphOS 3.0 for the MorphOS version. Saving images in PNG format needs additionally the zlib.library V3.2. Changes of version 2.0:
- Created MorphOS specific PNG icon and def_icon.
- Reworked the original documentation and made AmigaGuide files from it.
- Shows size of scaled area in window title now.
- The about window is now asynchronous and won't block Lupe anymore as long as it is open.
- Now has a proper $VER: version string.
- Added MagicBeacon support to the MorphOS version when an Image has been saved.
- Supports screennotify.library now and no longer blocks Workbench/Ambient when these want to reopen.
- Lupe can install a DOS notify on its icon in order to reload its tooltypes/config when the user changes some options there. Use ICONNOTIFY if you want Lupe checking its icon for changes.
- Added support for MorphOS extended window border gadgets 'Jump Screen' and 'Iconify'.
- Added GridColor argument to set the colour for the grid. The argument accepts a hexadecimal number in the format $RRGGBB or 0xRRGGBB. On MorphOS it's possible to also specify the alpha value like GC=$AARRGGBB.
- Grid rendering was completely broken on MorphOS. Fixed.
- Added PNG saver and respective menu option. PNG saver will save in 24 bit and won't save any alpha channel.
- Fixed true colour 24 bit IFF saver. Always only saved first 8 rows, failed on certain widths and didn't allocate bitmaps properly.
- Now uses wbmessage instead of Cli() to determine where it was started from.
- Added mouse wheel support to adjust scale factor.
- The Lupe window can be resized now by a fixed size step (the initial innerwidth/height is used) by pressing CTRL + cursor keys.
- Removed CurrentDir() stuff from saveiff(). Just using complete filename for Open() now.
- Some internal changes to argument parsing.
- Added IgnoreLupeWindow option. When enabled the Lupe window itself won't show up in the scaled bitmap anymore. This option requires MorphOS and Compositing enabled.
- Lupe won't try to jump to screens with no default title and no screen title anymore. Fixes the problem with JumpToActiveScreen and MorphOS blanker not being able to close its blanker screen when lupe jumped onto it.
- Added BeginRefresh()/EndRefresh() fixing the refresh problem with window borders on MorphOS after resizing the Lupe window.
- Pubscreenlist traversal could access illegal memory. Fixed.
- Ported C source code to E.

Announcement: 'PiStation ITX' board
The store 8bits4ever, which already offers various FPGA solutions for retro enthusiasts, plans to soon offer a board that is designed to accommodate a Raspberry Pi 3 or 4 in a mini-ITX case. It features a DB15 connector for outputting VGA/RGB video signals to CRT TVs and monitors. A USB hub and two DB9 joystick ports are integrated.
The image output via the DB15 port requires a Linux distribution, such as Recalbox. Among other things, this distribution also supports AGA Amigas. Alternatively, other Raspberry Pi distributions can be run that use the HDMI output. (dr)

AmigaOS 4: FTP server 'ZitaFTP' 1.33
Hans de Ruiter has released version 1.33 of his commercial FTP server 'ZitaFTP'. He wrote:
"I'm pleased to announce that ZitaFTP Server v1.33 is out now, and available for download. As usual, it's got one major new feature, and fixes for a bunch of niggling little issues.
Users can now get and renew their SSL certificates automatically via Let's Encrypt and ZeroSSL. Both will let you create free certificates for your server, provided that it's visible over the internet (on the standard HTTP port 80).
You'll also need a domain name, and probably a Dynamic DNS (DDNS) service. Dynu is the one I used for testing, and you can get a subdomain from them for free. Other changes:
- Server settings UI wouldn't allow the maximum number of clients to be set to 0 (infinite). FIXED
- Server settings UI wasn't showing error messages immediately. FIXED
- Fixed a rare "SSL routines:ssl3_write_pending:bad write retry" error that could cause HTTP requests to be cut off
- Now recognizes HTTP proxy headers, so it won't treat proxy connections as local
- Local peer detection wasn't working properly for HTTPS connections. FIXED
- Fixed a possible SEGV fault if a receive error occurred before the start of an HTTP message (e.g., a client tries to establish an HTTPS connection on an HTTP port)
- Fixed a silly bug that flipped the HTTP port number's endianness."
A single license of 'ZitaFTP Server' costs around 47 Euros. The program can be tested free of charge for 30 days. (dr)

Amiga sighting: Microsoft says goodbye to Internet Explorer on Amiga 1000
Via the Twitter account of its current web browser "Edge", Microsoft says goodbye to its predecessor "Internet Explorer": now it would be time for it to surf the great web of heaven. The text is accompanied by an animation in which the logo of the browser lights up on the screen of a computer whose operating system it never ran on - an Amiga 1000. (snx)

Editor: 'Lite XL' 2.0.3r2 for AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS released
At the end of last year George Sokianos had released the first version v1.16.12.3 of his port of the editor 'Lite XL' (amiga-news.de reported). The now available version is for the first time also available for MorphOS. He writes about it:
"I am delighted to inform you all that a few hours ago I released a new version of LiteXL, the v2.0.3r2, not only for AmigaOS 4.1 FE but also for MorphOS. For the first time, LiteXL runs on MorphOS, something I was working on for the last couple of months.
For all of you who love to use MorphOS, please give it a try and send me your feedback. How does it work? Is it fast on your system? Is it helpful for you for your development projects?
There are some known issues though. Some of them are SDL problems and some are LiteXL's ones, which I am working on fixing in future releases.
The MorphOS version wouldn't be possible without Bruno's "BeWorld" Peloille work. With his SDL port, his testing and help I managed to have LiteXL work quite well. Thank you so much Bruno for your support and the SDL fixes.
From now on, the AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS code is merged into one branch. This is necessary to simplify the work on both systems, fixing the same problems.
Of course, my work doesn't stop here. Your support with plenty of coffee, and the good words I hear from those who contacted me, give me the motivation to continue working on the next fixes and releases." (dr)

Video presentation: Michael Spindler on 'Akiko 32' and 'Akiko Portable'
On Saturday, 28.05.2022, the RETROpulsiv 15.1 took place at the university in Augsburg. During this event Michael Spindler gave a presentation (in German) about his 'Akiko 32'-Projekt project and reported on the current status.
The Akiko32 is an Amiga-AGA compatible computer with extensions in modern mini ITX format. The board is a hobby development and appears as open source for non-commercial purposes. On the board is a 68030 processor in PGA form factor, which can be clocked with 14MHz or 50MHz and also the complete AGA chipset (Alice, Lisa, Paula). To save ICs, not the usual combination like in the A1200 (Budgie, Gayle, CIAs) was used, but an Akiko IC which does almost the same tasks in the CD32. Currently the developer is working on the network card, which is based on the ZorroLAN.
Simultaneously, the developer has been working for a good half year on the 'Akiko Portable', an Amiga to go, which is not an emulation. This is supposed to fulfill the following requirements:
- as thin as possible
- two to three hours of battery operation targeted
- 14 inch display
- conversion of Amiga signals to the TFT display
- USB-C power supply
- Compact Flash card routed to the outside
- Notebook keyboard with number pad
- Trackpad
- USB for data exchange
The goal is to present a first early prototype at Amiga37. (dr)

Kickstarter campaign: The Gaming Chronicles - Episode 1 - The Amiga 500
Nicola Caulfield & Anthony Caulfield from London have produced films documenting the video games industry, in addition to various other documentaries for cinemas, broadcast and advertising. Their work includes "From Bedrooms to Billions", the history of the British video games industry from 1979 to the present day, released in 2014, and the sequel "From Bedrooms to Billions", entitled "The Amiga Years", released in May 2016 (amiga-news.de reported).
Over the years, hundreds of hours of filmed interview material have accumulated, not all of which has been included in previous films. The two were thus looking for a way to make this material available to everyone and present it in an informative and entertaining way. Thus the idea of the 'Gaming Chronicle's was born.
The Gaming Chronicles are specially created episodic content that covers certain topics in gaming or computer history in more detail. The crowdfunding campaign now launched for this is intended to help fund this project.
Over time, it is hoped that this work will become a digital film resource containing everything there is to know about the gaming industry. The goal is to produce a main documentary-style episode of 50-60 minutes, but also to create several self-contained featurettes totaling 40 minutes that will act as companion material to the main documentary and put all of this into a downloadable archive.
For this first installment, the filmmakers have decided to focus on the Commodore Amiga 500 computer, which was released 35 years ago this very year. The Kickstarter campaign, which runs through Sunday, July 10, 2022, has already raised about $18,400 of the 24,354 needed. (dr)

Dock bar: WBDock 2 V2.604
Thomas Rapp has updated his dock bar 'WBDock 2' for AmigaOS 3.1 and to version 2.604. Changes:
- added special support for project icons with a default tool of Mount (for example from Devs/DosDrivers or Storage/DosDrivers): if the drive is already mounted, the context menu gets new items Unmount and Eject. If you run it again, it will eject the drive rather than issue an "already mounted" error message.
- added a new special position value which positions a dock relative to another dock. Using this you can implement sub-docks by adding wbdock config files to the dock.
- allows to change the icon label.
- supports multi-picture files using OS 3.9's PDTA_WhichPicture attribute.

- Fences can be bought in the building shop
- Introduced tax system (it is best to start with potatoes, as long as you don't have any animals
- Every interval a boar appears and you have to shoot each one that emerges from behind the trees (if you miss one, you lose one seedling)
- improved loading of the program (no pop-up screens with graphics)

AmiTube 1.1: YouTube client for all Amiga systems
Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow's AmiTube enables watching YouTube videos on an 68k Amiga. They are converted to Commodore's CDXL format and downloaded.
With version 1.1 released today, the 'Fancy List' introduced a few days ago is integrated into the program: a new list function where title, description and thumbnail are displayed directly in the list (amiga-news.de reported). After switching to this variant, the images are loaded automatically, making it suitable only for faster Amigas/RTG or NG Amigas (YouTube video). The author tested the new feature on his Amiga 1200 with TF1260, AGA and 32 colors and found: "it’s not that bad, certainly fast enough to work with it." The changes in detail:
- Fancy movie list
- updated translation for italian and french
- encoding bug fixes (should show now umlauts and other non ASCII chars in title and description)
- smaller bugs fixes related downloading movies
The current version can be downloaded from the AmiTube website or installed via the update check in AmiTube. (dr)
