Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

 Wow...
 So much has happened recently, it's hard to know where to start.
 Allright, the bad news first. The first Amiga monthly magazine,
"Amazing Computing" is dead. It was also the last US Amiga magazine.
This is incredibly sad, especially as it just missed making it into
the new era of "Amiga by Amino", as announced in our recent special
edition. We don't know the details, and I'm not sure I want to. It
would be depressing. However, this is a real loss for North American
Amigans and the hurt will be felt for a very long time.
 Also sad, and this for the entire Amiga community, not just us North
Americans, is the death of CUCUG's Amiga Web Directory. The
cornerstone of the Amiga community on the web, it also just missed the
new era. Rumor has it other sites offered to take the Web Directory
over, and were turned down. If true, that's mind numbing. We really
don't know the details here either, but we will miss them.
 Now, the good news. There really is some, and it's quite good!
 The Amiga Community will survive, for some time to come. The computer
has a new owner, with a plan for the future (that's almost enough to
cause shock in old time Amigans) and a genuine, deep respect and love
for the Amiga and the Community. This is a bit hard to cope with after
recent events, but it's true.
 It's also true they have a rough road ahead of them. Success is by no
means guaranteed. But they'll be traveling the road with the best
computer community that ever existed. If that combination can't build
a meaningful future, then there's very little that can.
 The plan will be revealed to us in the next few months, and
apparently goes well beyond desktop machines. It's going to be an
interesting new era - we'll keep you posted.
 Finally, this new era seems to have room for Petro Tyschtschenko and
his work in Germany. In our opinion, while Jay Miner is the father of
the Amiga, Petro is the godfather or something similar. We're pleased
to see he's still involved. There's no one who's worked harder for the
Amiga's future over the years.
 While we're at it - for you gamers, the library of Quake related
games have been released for people to port, and work is well underway
for PPC Amigas. For those who love these games, the fun is just
beginning.
 Below, the first Executive Update from the Amiga web site, now under
the control of Amino Development.
 We love it!

January 3, 2000

YeeHaw and welcome to the year 2000;

 I want to make something very clear from the beginning we have been
told, that Amiga was purchased by Gateway because of the Patents, and
that there were not even aware of the Amiga installed base, or the
people.

 Gateway purchased Amiga because of Patents, we purchased Amiga
because of the People.

 Without the people standing behind, developing, creating, purchasing
and continuing to believe in the Amiga there never would have been
anything for Gateway to purchase. We recognize this, and it is because
of you, and what you have continued to accomplish with Amiga that we
have purchased the company.

 I want to make sure that everyone knows and understands what this all
means to you the true Amigans.

 Here is what was acquired from Gateway:

 1. All trademarks logos etc.

 2. All existing inventory of Amiga International

 3. All existing licenses.

 4. License to All Amiga patents (Gateway still owns the patents, but
we are able to use them).

 5. All web sites, and registered domain names.

 6. The Amiga OS and all that is associated with the OS.

 7. The Amiga operation as it exists today.

 Specific details of the developer system, the OS partners and how one
can begin developing will be released in the next couple of weeks.

 We will be making an announcement on January 8th, 2000 with one of
our partners at CES in Las Vegas, and more details will follow that
release.

 Fleecy, Myself, Petro, and the rest of the team are not going to make
promises and create presentations and demos. We are going to deliver
products, services, and the rest of the world will know what you have
already known.

 We will be officially changing the name of Amino Development
Corporation to the Amiga Corporation this week, and we will let
everyone know of this change shortly once it is officially completed.

 I want to thank all of you for your continued support we will make
Amiga what it should have been, and more importantly what it will be.

 Keeping the faith,

Bill McEwen President/CEO
Amino Development Corporation

COSA Reaction to Amino Purchase of Amiga Rights

January 2, 2000

 Within the past few days, ownership of the Amiga rights, trademarks
and technology passed from Gateway to Amino Development. People have
asked for COSA's opinion on the sale, and for comments how this
affects the campaign to open-source the AmigaOS.

 We believe the sale of Amiga to Amino is a good, positive step
forward for the Amiga community, and that the new owners of the Amiga
technology rights are the right people to steer the Amiga technology
into the new millennium.

 COSA have known Fleecy Moss, co-founder of Amino, for quite some
time, and have been in e-mail discussions on a number of matters of
mutual interest, including Open Source, for quite some considerable
time. We have a good working relationship, and a mutual understanding
of what needs to be done to bring the Amiga into the new millennium.

 COSA is confident, based on our discussions with Fleecy, that Amino
has the vision and direction necessary, to take the Amiga into the new
millennium. The major difference to their predecessors being that
Amino truely understands the Amiga technology, and is receptive to the
needs, ideas and inspirations of the Amiga community. (The management
of Amino are, afterall, Amigans themselves.)

 We await the announcements from Amino in the weeks and months ahead
with much anticipation, and look forward to a hopefully long and
productive working relationship with them.

Congratulations, Guys!
Steve Crietzman, and the team at COSA

 January 1, 2000 - The Champaign- Urbana Computer Users Group (CUCUG)
announced today that it has retired its popular, award-winning Amiga
Web Directory (AWD) web site.

 Citing continuing declines in the Amiga marketplace and Gateway's
failure to deliver new Amiga computer systems, CUCUG reluctantly
decided to discontinue its popular web site link directory and news
service on January 1, 2000. It was felt that while CUCUG could
continue with the AWD for several months, it was better to retire now
rather than allow the site to slowly decline with the market. CUCUG is
hopeful that the latest owners of the Amiga can turn this market
around for the developers and users who have held on throughout all
the past ownership changes and other difficulties the Amiga has faced.

 For over five years, the Amiga Web Directory served as one of the
most-visited Amiga-oriented web sites on the Internet. Its carefully
cataloged listings of Amiga web sites was the most-respected
collection of its kind. Each site in the AWD's listings was reviewed
by the CUCUG webmaster to ensure quality and Amiga orientation. Site
descriptions were carefully prepared by hand, resulting in accuracy
not possible on other machine- driven sites or those which allow site
owners to write their own descriptions.

 The AWD's Amiga news pages became one of the most imitated features
in the Amiga web community. Dozens of Amiga news sites were inspired
by the success of the Amiga Web Directory's hugely popular news pages.

 A well-known offshoot of the Amiga Web Directory was "Agnes" the
Amiga web searching service. Agnes was also a cartoon character which
personalized the searching service. In addition to the over-2000 Amiga
sites cataloged in the Amiga Web Directory, Agnes could search the
general Internet for Amiga content, newsgroup messages, CUCUG Status
Register newsletters and other Amiga-oriented materials.

 The Amiga Web Directory was one of the first member-supported Amiga
web sites. Amiga enthusiasts joined the CUCUG organization to show
their support for the efforts of the group. These memberships covered
the costs associated with running the popular web service and other
CUCUG activities. CUCUG is very grateful to its members' support which
it has received over the years. The group also acknowledges the many
Amiga-oriented companies which have given assistance.

 CUCUG, which has been supporting local computer users in the
Champaign-Urbana, Illinois area since 1983 will now focus its efforts
on local user group activities.

 "Amiga Update" has received confirmation from several sources that
PIM Publication's "Amazing Computing" has recently filed for
bankruptcy. "Amazing" was the first - and the last - monthly Amiga
magazine in the US and its presence will be sorely missed.
 While it is certainly possible for businesses to survive a bankruptcy
and continue into the future, we have no indications that such will be
the case with "Amazing". It is ironic that as Amiga itself is in the
process of a potential rebirth, we have lost both CUCUG and "Amazing
Computing"

 Amigan-St. Louis is happy to announce the addition of Nova Design,
Inc. to it's growing list of exhibitors.

 The ever popular Gateway Computer Shows, including the new Amiga 2K
show in St. Louis on April1 & 2, 2000, have always been very popular
with Amiga Computer fans.

 This newest addition of Nova Design, Inc. and others is just one more
step in the growing list of companies that will exhibit at the largest
Amiga show in the Americas. Please see the "Show" page in the site
listed below.

 In additon, you can find the "Club Table Contest" described on the
"Contest" page of the Amiga 2K site. This is an excellent chance for
an Amiga Club to showcase it's abilities, and show off the Amiga,
while possibly winning a prize for their efforts.

January 3, 2000

 Amigan-St. Louis is pleased to announce a discount for clubs
exhibiting at the Gateway Computer Show - Amiga 2K©. The discount is
40% off of the normal price. This is a substantial discount, that is
only available to clubs, and only available when utilizing an eight
foot table. It is a limited time offer.

 The pricing can be determined by looking at the price guide for eight
foot tables under the "Exhibitors" button on the show page at:
http://www.amiga-stl.com/show.html Then simply multiply 60% times that
price to determine the price a club would pay.

 Example: An eight foot table space is 9' x 6' or 54 square feet. The
price per square foot is $6. So 54 x 6 = $324. That's the normal
price. Then multiply $324 x 60% to get $194.40. This is what the club
will pay for their table. Eight foot tables can be shared by two
groups if necessary. This would further reduce the cost to a club. The
cost of the table does not include any admissions to the show. All
persons in the club must purchase an admission.

 All in all, this is a substantial discount. It is being given due to
the tremendous support clubs have given to the Amiga. Without the
clubs, there would be no Amiga. So to reward them and their hard
working members, we are giving this discount so they will not deplete
their club treasury to exhibit at Amiga 2K

 AmIRC was the first VaporWare application to be shown to the Amiga
world. Its author, Oliver Wagner, has worked too many late nights on
the program to count, and continues to update it to this day.

 AmIRC's main strengths lie in its interface - it's one of the easiest
IRC clients to use on any platform, yet it also keeps the power users
happy with advanced ARexx scripting and its plugin API, allowing
unique new features to be added. It also features a URL grabber to
capture any URLs mentioned in any channels or query windows, a
lag-o-meter to measure your system's lag from the server, and strong
builtin flood protection including a staggered output queue to stop
you flooding yourself off the server.

 For IRCing on the Amiga, AmIRC should be your number one choice.

 Please remember, AmIRC is shareware. If you use it, please register
the software and help support Amiga software development.

 Download AmIRC 3.3 and see why it's the best IRC client for the
Amiga. If you registered AmIRC 1.x or AmIRC 2.x, you can update to
version 3.3.

 There is an AmIRC Mailing List run by VaporWare for users to discuss
the software. Please feel free to sign up for it, your question may be
answered there.

Features

 o Advanced Low Level Plugin API.
 o Single Window Iconification.
 o Lag-o-meter shows lag from the server
 o Individual window logging.
 o Intuitive channel window with userlist and mode display.
 o Builtin high speed DCC drivers, incl. Secure Chat.
 o ARexx port includes event trapping.
 o IRCNet and UnderNet extensions.
 o Oper and clone announcement.

 o Builtin IdentD, disables itself if needed.
 o Bind sound effects, auto deiconify or ARexx to events.
 o Last nick history, TAB key cycles through.
 o URL grabber saves any URLs to send to your web browser.
 o Supports colored text for both input (WYSIWIG) and output.
 o CTCP/DCC flood protection.
 o Timestamping of lines and inline clickable URLs.

Thursday, 23rd December 1999

 Today we announce the availability of a new Amiga next generation
PowerPC OS project, called MorphOS, to the public.

 In its current state it provides a modern memory protection
microkernel which runs a virtual amiga emulation. This microkernel
will be the base for a new OS layer.

 Research for this project started in early 1998, while at the end of
1998 an early implementation was ready. In 1999, we started on the
virtual amiga emulation to make the current AmigaOS available without
requiring 68K hardware. The basic design goals behind MorphOS are

- memory protection
- resource tracking
- asynchronous message system
- low interrupt latency
- virtual memory (optional)
- distributed computing
- symmetrical multi processing (SMP)
- recursive memory management
- task/thread and clan/chief model
- clean design with an elegant API
- micro/pico kernel mixture

The developer release is planned for end of January. Minimum system
requirements are
- A4000 with CyberStorm PPC/604e and Symbios 770 SCSI
- CyberVisionPPC
- at least 32MB memory installed
- Kickstart 3.1 (Version 40.68) and Workbench 3.1 or up
Hardware requirements might change as soon as more hardware setups are
tested and implemented.

 As the success of this project will also depend on your
feedback/support, we suggest that interested developers visit our
project webpage for a general MorphOS overview and information on how
to join us to help.

Feel free to enter the project webpage at

New links for amiga-software.com
Patrick Beerhorst writes:
I want to point to the offer from amiga-software.com. With this page, I made it my goal to offer a link collection of good Amiga software products which often "suffer" from a long or complicated URL and are therefore unknown to many users, or quickly forgotten if you forget to bookmark it.

So if you have good submissions for the page, please send them in, so I can keep the page continuously updated. For submissions, please use the offered form, or send me a mail in the format title / URL / description and address of the author. Please don't forget to mention if special hardware is required (like PPC etc.). (Translation: mb)

Info for PC users: Trojan/Feliz destroys important system files
"The trojan wishes a 'happy new year' [FELIZ ANO NOVO], and a face appears. However, eight important system files are deleted in the background. A new system boot is no longer possible then. Like before, beware of new year e-mails with attached files. Of course there are harmless (exe) files around. My advice: NEVER open this file, no matter from which address it comes." Steve Crietzman on COSA ML

Steve Crietzman: News from Petro
From:         "Steve Crietzman" president@amigakernel.org
Date:         Tue, 4 Jan 2000 10:41:10 -0000
Organization: Campaign to Open Source AmigaOS
Subject: [cosa] Some news from Petro

Hi all,

I've just got off the phone with Petro. Thought I'd share
a little info with y'all.

First, he's alive and well and still functioning as Amiga
International, Inc. and will continue to operate under Amino.

Tom Schmidt is also alive, well and employed by Gateway,
and still around in some capacity - although I'm not sure
what his new title or position is yet. He is to come over
to Germany and meet with Petro soon to finalise everything.

Petro sounded very optimistic about the future, and said
he looks forward to continue to do his job and to the future
with Amino.

He said to expect some announcements from Amino in the
days and weeks ahead. Keep a close eye on the Amiga
website. According to Petro, there's going to be a small
update later today.

He also in this phonecall repeated his continuing support
for COSA and Open Source and asked me to convey his
best wishes to Amigans everywhere, and to let everyone
know that for him, it's "business as usual."

It's reassuring (to me at least) to know that whatever
happens with the Amiga, the one thing we can always
count on is that Petro will always be around. Whoever
said we don't have stability in the Amiga world? ;-)

Best regards,

Steve Crietzman (president@amigakernel.org)

GNN: USB-expansion for Amiga
The title link is yesterday's top news at GNN.
GNN writes:
"After the easy-to-expand Universal Serial Bus was quickly spread first by Apples iMac, and shortly afterwards by Windows 98 systems, interest is now growing among users of other platforms - at least that of Amiga users might be satisfied soon.

The TigerTronics team is developing a USB expansion board for all Amiga models with Zorro expansion card, like the 3000 and 4000 series. It is labeled "Eriol", and will offer two USB ports. Low and high speed USB devices will be supported. If more than two devices are to be connected, standard USB hubs have to be used. To transmit data quickly and keep system usage low, Eriol will access Amiga memory directly by DMA transfer."

AMIGA

First official statement from Bill McEwen: Executive Update
January 3, 2000
YeeHaw and welcome to the year 2000;

I want to make something very clear from the beginning we have been told, that Amiga was purchased by Gateway because of the Patents, and that there were not even aware of the Amiga installed base, or the people.

Gateway purchased Amiga because of Patents, we purchased Amiga because of the People.

Without the people standing behind, developing, creating, purchasing and continuing to believe in the Amiga there never would have been anything for Gateway to purchase. We recognize this, and it is because of you, and what you have continued to accomplish with Amiga that we have purchased the company.

I want to make sure that everyone knows and understands what this all means to you the true Amigans.

Here is what was acquired from Gateway:
  1. All trademarks logos etc.
  2. All existing inventory of Amiga International
  3. All existing licenses.
  4. License to All Amiga patents (Gateway still owns the patents, but we are able to use them).
  5. All web sites, and registered domain names.
  6. The Amiga OS and all that is associated with the OS.
  7. The Amiga operation as it exists today.

Specific details of the developer system, the OS partners and how one can begin developing will be released in the next couple of weeks.

We will be making an announcement on January 8th, 2000 with one of our partners at CES in Las Vegas, and more details will follow that release.

Fleecy, Myself, Petro, and the rest of the team are not going to make promises and create presentations and demos. We are going to deliver products, services, and the rest of the world will know what you have already known.

We will be officially changing the name of Amino Development Corporation to the Amiga Corporation this week, and we will let everyone know of this change shortly once it is officially completed.

I want to thank all of you for your continued support we will make Amiga what it should have been, and more importantly what it will be.

Keeping the faith,

Bill McEwen President/CEO
Amino Development Corporation (Translation: mb)

AmigaZone
Steven Kile did send us this advertising for AmigaZone.
I posted this a few days before, but forgot to upload the ad. Sorry.

Greetings Fellow Amiga Users,

I just wanted to let all of you know about an Amiga Web-based bulletin board, The AmigaZone. The AmigaZone is a fully menued online service you can use with any terminal program or Telnet client, and it also has a fast and slick web interface you can use with your web browser!

The Zone has dozens of message bases, over 40,000 downloadable files, an Amiga Usenet newsfeed, Amiga Fidonet echoes feed, "QWK" mail and news downloading, CD ROMs online, fourteen Amiga mailing lists that feed right into our message bases so you don't have to clog up your mailbox with them, an online gif/jpg library image thumbnail generator, live chat rooms, a members' private FTP site and POP3 mail server, and more features than any Amiga-specific service you've ever seen. Yes, it's a multi- interface, easy to use, fully Amiga-dedicated online service and we'd love to have YOU as a member!

I particularly like, the free email account (YourAccountName@amigazone.com). I am an Amiga user and proud of it. This lets everyone know.

The downloadable files are not duplicates of Aminet. These files are found all over the web and deposited her for our convenience. I don't have time to scour the web for the files I need and this is an excellent resource.

AmigaZone members can participate in nightly Telnet chats. These chats are a good way to make friends with other dedicated Amiga users and get their valuable help when we need it. The Sunday chats include prize giveaways (for more info see www.amigazone.com/pages/contests.html#prizes). This is probably the best odds you will ever find. On average, 10 or less people make it to the Sunday chats and Harv is very generous with his prizes. I am not talking about cheap prizes, I have won a factory sealed OpalVision board, and several texture CDs, and books.

When you join AmigaZone as a paid member, you will be sent a FREE official AmigaZone Logo black mesh baseball cap as our thank-you gift! No strings. No baloney! Click to see a picture of the cap www.amigazone.com/images/cap.jpg. The cap is all black, universal-fit and the AmigaZone logo is in white with the Boing! ball that dots the "i" in its traditional red and white checks. Upon notification of your signup, you'll get an email with your login info and your free AmigaZone cap will be mailed to you! These hats are beautiful. I signed on after they started this program, so I had to buy mine. But even then, members often buy these items at cost.

To join, use our secure signup page (merchant.calweb.com/amigazone.com/pages/signup.html), or phone CalWeb at 1-800-509-9322 or 1-916-641-9320, and say "AmigaZone Sent Me!" and the $20 signup fee is waived!

All this and it only costs $12.95 per month. We all need to help keep Amiga resources available. Without our help, we will all be left to our own devices to keep our machines running.

Thanks, Steve. (Translation: mb)

Amiga Web Directory closing down
On January 1st, the multi-award-winning Amiga Web Directory, which has gone online in May 1994 as a free service of Champaign-Urbana Computer Users Group and AdvanceNet, has closed and thanks all members, friends and supporters.

amiga-news.de owes much to the Amiga Web Directory. Basically, this news service was created from the idea of offering something like the AWD for the German language. AWD has been by inspiration in many things. I think it is sad that they close now, since news around the Amiga will not subside so quickly, especially after the Amino purchase. Therefore I hope the people behind the AWD will think this over. (ps) (Translation: mb)

Volker Mohr

Who has bought Amiga?
Volker Mohr has done this summary for us:
Everybody has heard it: Amino Development has purchased the rights on the name Amiga, the Internet domain, and most important, on the Amiga technology developed in the time before Gateway. Not purchased were the rights on the new multimedia environment, so far been called "AmigaObjects", and the so-called Amiga MCC. These products, developed during the Gateway era, will be integrated into the Gateway product line without the name Amiga in the future.

With other words: What we user would call Amiga does now belong to Amino.

But who is Amino? Basically, Amino consists of two persons: Fleecy Moss and Bill McEwen. If you had an eye on Amiga Inc. and Gateway in the last few years, these names will sound familiar to you.

Bill McEwen was employed at Amiga, Inc. as "Head of Marketing and Software Evangelism". He left the company only days before Jim Collas, not all that voluntary himself. Before Bill worked at Amiga, Inc., he already was employed by several other well-known computer companies, but had nothing to do with Amiga. Despite this, he was immediately impressed by the capabilities of the (original) Amiga, and very quickly became a convinced member of the Amiga community and a supporter of the (by Jeff Schindler) so-called "Amiga Classics". Of course he did not lose the feeling for the need of new hard- and software developments. So, he was also a supporter of Collas' plans for the so-called AmigaMCC.

Bill McEwen had to leave Amiga, Inc. a few days before Jim Collas. While Collas was said to have left the company "for personal reasons", Bill never hid that his contract was not extended. While Bill is no long-standing Amiga fan, he did not only learn to understand and value the Amiga and his users, but also was able to win the trust of old Amiga gurus like Dave Haynie and Carl Sassenrath.

Fleecy Moss is also known to most from his time at Amiga, Inc. Little is known about his time before that. In an interview with the magazine CU Amiga (which has been closed down in the meantime), October issue 1998, page 30f., he tells a little bit about himself: "I am British, and currently work in the USA. I am Project Manager and System Architect, responsible for introducing new special computer systems. I am Amiga user for 8 years (translator's note: with the interview being dated 1998), and started with a Commodore Pet and VC 20 at the age of 11. What I hope to give the Amiga is respect for his philosophy and community ideals, as well as a good feeling for the future and the digital information revolution." (translator's note: The above has been re-translated and might differ slightly from the original, to which I don't have access.)

After Joe Torre, Fleecy Moss was the second important person at Amiga, Inc. whose contract was not extended. After his departure, Fleecy initiated the KOSH project. KOSH is intended to be "the hardware equivalent to Linux", a computer platform honoring user wishes and needs, developed as open source. Fleecy knows of course that such a goal cannot be achieved in short terms. When Gateway canceled the AmigaMCC plans, Joe Torre initiated Amino together with Bill McEwen. (translator's note: probably this should read Fleecy Moss and Bill McEwen, not Joe Torre!?) There have been little information about this company. The first impression on the public was made by the close connection with Phoenix, a connection of several Amiga distributors and developers with the goal of creating a new platform as an alternative to the Amiga. This common platform was originally intended to be based on PPC systems with QNX as operating system. Both was not a final decission when Phoenix / Amino was founded, but a basis of discussion for common plans.

So what does the purchase of Amiga by Amino mean? It is clear that the freshly founded two-man company does not have the funds to continue AmigaOS development and have new hardware build in short terms. But that is not required necessarily. To get an impression what can be expected, I recommend having a close look at the Phoenix pages. The basic difference will probably be that now there will be no development of an Amiga alternative, but a further development of the Amiga platform. This means, roughly, that Amiga/Amino will lead the path, but several other companies will build new Amigas, too. This would bring the Amiga area a similar situation as in the PC area, where many companies can honor many special wishes of users. This path of action has several advantages: The necessary investments are distributed among several companies. Additionally, this gives added security to the user, since a possible bancruptcy of a single company would not endanger the whole market. This way, the Amiga as a platform will be of interest again for new users.

If the future systems will run on a modern AmigaOS, QNX or whatever, or if the new systems will be based on PPC, that's speculation. It's a fact, however, that there has been work on the future before the purchase, too, so things don't start from zero. Especially how new users are to be drawn has to be speculated about. For sure there has been thought put in this area, too.

I am convinced that many surprises are to be expected soon. (Translation: mb)

Amino Development Buys Amiga Name, Inventory From Gateway

 SAN DIEGO, Dec. 31 -- Amino Development Corp., a privately held
company based in Maple Valley, Washington, has purchased from Gateway
its Amiga trademarks and Amiga computer systems. Terms of the
transaction have not been disclosed.

 According to Peter Ashkin, Gateway senior vice president, Gateway
chose to sell the name after deciding to fold Amiga's software
engineering function into Gateway's product development. This merger
of development activities is part of Gateway's overall strategy to
develop and market the coming generation of "Internet appliances".

 "Amiga, as a personal computer brand, has a loyal following of fans
around the world," Ashkin said. "Under Gateway's wing, Amiga morphed
into a software development company working on a new Internet
appliance operating environment software. Now that we're bringing that
development work into Gateway product development, it made sense to
find a buyer for Amiga."

 "Yee-haw " said Bill McEwen, president and CEO of Amino. "This is a
very exciting day, and now an even more exciting tomorrow. Now we can
finish the job that was started 15 years ago."

 The transaction, effective immediately, includes the transfer of all
Internet domain names related to Amiga which Gateway had held. Gateway
retains ownership of all patents acquired when it bought Amiga in

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
 Happy New Year everyone! Some of you will see this on the last day of
1999, some on the first of 2000 - either way, you have another reason
to celebrate today! We've been waiting and practically twitching to
get this information to you.
 We still don't have a press release directly from Amino, but as the
following information is now available generally on the wire, we owe
it to our readers to get it to you as quickly as possible. If we do
get a press release from Amino/Amiga we'll also get that to you right
away.
 Looks to us like both Gateway and the Amiga Community win with this
deal.
 Big smiles around here today!

 Editor

Gateway
retains ownership of all patents acquired when it bought Amiga in
1997.

Bill McEwen speaks at Amiga.org:
Happy New Year to all Amigans around the world.
Today Gateway announced that we have acquired Amiga. This is all true, and we are going to be making numerous announcements in the next week about the plans for the future systems, and it is all going to be very exciting. There is a very bright future for us, and now we can begin the journey. Welcome 2000! - Bill McEwen

I now recommend one thing: go back and have a look at the last two caricatures by Torsten Dudai (Once upon a time...). Either all these heads agree on a common goal, and cooperate; or this Hydra will be going nowhere. If I see things correctly, there are two heads considerably stronger than the rest - QNX and Amino. If THEY agree on things, the next few days will tell. But the people behind PowerOS, MorphOS, Screens, and AROS should have a close look at what is going on, and think twice about how they can serve the cause best. (mb) (Translation: mb)

AmigaOS 3.5 wish list
Martina Jacobs writes:
I just hit a site I think interesting. At the title link, you can find a user wish list for AmigaOS 3.5 updates. Using the guestbook, you can state your opinion of what is still needed in AmigaOS.

If H&P knows about this site, I don't know, but it only makes sense this way. If it isn't the case, they know now. :-) (Translation: mb)

Report from the Chaos Communication Congress
"The 16th Chaos Communication Congress divided the hacker community into two fractions more than ever before - one wanting to do a life style party, and the other wanting to stress political discussions and seminars. Harsh criticism and euphoric words were balanced in the final discussion on Wednesday after three days "fun at the system". Chasms were across "Windowsing", "generalism" and "game-centricism" of the hacker meeting. Does the Chaos Computer Club open itself to the mainstream in a time when Internet is becoming the masses media, and is the meeting degrading to just another LAN party?"

With New Prices into the Next Millenium (30.12.99)
Taking the high Dollar (or low Euro) into account, PerSuaSiVe SoftWorX again have decided to allow for cheaper registrations through RegNet.
Additionally, prices have been updated to reflect all possible, most uptodate bundle discounts as well. For example, the cheapest bundle (#5553) now only is $14 instead of $18.5 and the most expensive (#5563) only is $65 instead of $77.5. Please see www.ar-kleinert.de/regnet_e.html for links to RegNet and their sales conditions. (Translation: mb)

Axel Krämer now at Met@box
I had the opportunity to talk with Axel Krämer on the phone a short time ago. He is now at Met@box, responsible for production and logistics, and is very happy with his work. Just like before, he has a keen eye on what is going on in the Amiga sector, and wishes all Amigians a happy new year 2000.

Of course I also asked Axel about news on the joeCARD, and he promised to tell us news immediately :-). (ps)

Two articles that get under your skin
Subject on the Chaos Communication Congress: Tron (again)
This year, too, Tron's ghost is spooking the halls of the Haus am Kölnischen Park in Berlin, where the Chaos Communication Congress closes today. The cause of death of the star hacker is no longer in doubt after two autopsies. The suicide theory of police and prosecutors is criticised by the CCC, Tron's parents and their attorney even more than before, however. "It could not have happened without outer force", Chaos spokesman Andy Müller-Maghun brings the murder theory to the point after detailed studies of the autopsy report and prosecutor files. Police research has been focused only on the suicide theory from the very beginning, Müller-Maghun criticises. Other hints have been ignored on purpose.

GPS under your skin
According to plans of US manufacturer Applied Digital Solutions (ADS), online shoppers will carry their customer card under their skin in the future. The Florida company has now filed a patent for a maintenance free implant, which is (among others) able to recieve and send GPS signals. The transciever can be implanted in the human body with little effort, says the company in an ad, provided with power by muscle movements. (ps)

Connectline v5.2.beta2
Joerg Deckert writes:
This is an update for version 5.1 of Connectline. All components are in there, but there was not enough time for a completely new version, since there was a Y2K bug to fix and the new year is near. For a full version an updated documentation and complete tests are missing.

New:
  • Now Freeware (no keyfile needed)!
  • removal of (hopefully) all Y2K bugs.
  • completely new Fido part, fully node-/hub enabled
  • files are now stored in the filebase carrying their original names.
  • mailinglist server for all networks.
  • PPP-Login.
  • Netcalls over preconfigured providers, depending on time.
  • switching some parts of the program to the NList MUI custom class.

Features:
  • multi-net support: ZConnect/RFC/Z3.8/Fido incl. gating
  • multi-port support. Nine ports. Up to eight ports freely configurable. ISDN, modem, network, local, etc. + one sysop port
  • interactive control of the box, by WWW (with PD WEB Server), by AmigaGuide or by ANSI choice
  • clever Cron system. Events can happen, programs be started on any time, by month, weekday, day, hours and minutes
  • uses MUI, therefore fontsensitive and freely configurable outfit
  • interface to internet (remote telnet login, (C)SLIP/PPP user login)
  • configurable routing, by sender and/or reciever. Domain server configurable for multiple domains.
  • Developer Pack for C and ARexx available
  • very low memory usage with many ports due to clever server-/client-management
  • fully optimized for Amiga multitasking, therefore very low ressource usage
  • own locale system for language adjustments by domain, and if wanted online for system texts, error message, and commands
  • output of all commands and system messages freely configurable
  • online interface is a standard 100% shell, and all online commandos are AmigaOS commands
  • whole drives can be mirrored as boards, like including CD-Roms
  • user passwords are stored encrypted. Access rights are granted by groups and levels
  • big ARexx port with unlimited possibilities for own expansions, with much more than 200 commands
  • virtual memory, automatically enabled on memory shortage
  • chat system (also available as standalone version) connecting multiple CL systems and points by internet or Hydra Netcall
  • detailed, pictured manual
  • and many more

Requirements:
  • System: Amiga or compatible, MC68030 or better
  • Memory: for box usage minimum 4 MB (recommended: 16 MB)
  • Programs:
    • MUI 3.8 or better
    • NList MUI Custom Class
    • (MiamiDX or compatible TCP/IP-stack for internet connection)

Complete source code available on request!
Download: ConnectLine.lha

Christmas / New Year greetings
Dear friends, aquaintances and users of my software!
Another year is almost gone, and I want to write what has happened this year from my point of view.

For one, my studies are doing well (I am in my 5th half-year), but it takes me more time than I expected. This sometimes causes significant delays in my coding projects and / or in writing e-mails. I want to say sorry for this, but my studies have to be top priority.

In the summer break I wanted to use every free hour for coding - and that's what I did, resulting in good progress in my projects. At first, the WizardClasses, an object-oriented C++ development system, recieved a major update, allowing me to develop others more efficiently. I planned to release this system to the public midtime next year, to make life easier for other programmers.

The first remarkable release this year was my new FrameMachine driver system "FMdriver", which has been accepted very well by the users of this video board. It is now also possible with FMdriver to watch TV on Workbench, with full PPC support for super fast color space conversions.

Afterwards I was planning to finish ArtecScan 2.0 - the scanner driver for Artec scanners. With my recently updated WizardClasses, I was able to finish it faster than usual. But then, the worst thing for every coder happened: my system hard drive was defective, and I lost my complete data (source codes, e-mails and other data). With the help of Petra Struck (author of the German "AmigaNews"), which published my need for an identical hard drive, and Hendrik Hanke, who did lend me his hard drive, I was able to recover my lost data by exchanging the defective controller board. Thanks again!!

Well, this did cost me roughly two weeks work, and by summer brak was over. ArtecScan was not finished again... :( Of course I tried to continue with the ArtecScan development, but with this it took some more weeks.

I demonstrated the results of my work on a little computer exhibition, the "Computronika" end of October in Germany. Afterwards, I released the alpha versions of ArtecScan to the public on my homepage.

After I released ArtecScan, I wrote a FrameMachine driver for the hardware independant video driver standard (VHI) by Felix Schwarz.

Two weeks later, the most important Amiga event of the year took place, the HomeElectronicsWorld'99 in Cologne. Of course I was there, too, and met a lot of people. It was a nice event, and it made clear that the Amiga will live on!

In the very least I will continue programming for the Amiga, and use it, and I hope you do, too! If Haage & Partner, Amiga Inc. and DCE do the right thing, we can have a great new computer by the end of next year!

At the end I wish you all a merry christmas (a little delayed), and a happy new year!! Yours, Stefan Robl. (ps)

So, if you want to test the driver, go ahead and install it. If there are problems, please send a short e-mail to me. Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

 The old saying "the only constant is change" is certainly true in the
Amiga community. It sometimes seems that you can't count on anything
staying the same from one day to the next.
 Unfortunately, much of the change we've seen in this year now ending
has been anything but good. The most recent change seems to be the
sudden vanishing of the "Amiga's" only remaining North American print
publication.
 We can tell you this, however. There are a lot of people working very
hard to make changes that will ensure a future for the Amiga. There's
just not much to say about these activities right at the moment. We'll
keep you informed as we are able.

Take a look at Amiga Realm
--------------------------
 Received a note a while back from our friend Paul Andrews in the UK
suggesting we take a look at his site "Amiga Realm". He reports he's
been working long and hard on it in the last few months. The effort
shows. It's well worth your stopping by if you haven't, with a wealth
of Amiga information. Find it at:

http://www.amigarealm.com

 We have a wide variety of stories to bring your way this time, and
it's all pretty much positive for once! Hope this brightens up your
day. For those of you celebrating one holiday or another at this time
of the year, we wish you all the joy such holidays can bring! To all
our readers, we say thanks for being with us throughout 1999, and we
hope to have a prosperous, pleasant and re-invigorating last year of
the century with you and Amiga in 2000!
 Best regards,
 Brad Webb,

Hello Brad,

 Any idea as to what has happened to Amazing? I haven't received any
mag. for three months I have made 5 or 6 calls to their phone # and
all I get is a taped message to fax or E-Mail. I've e-mailed Don Hicks
several times and have gotten no response.

 PS thanks for keeping Amiga Update going I feel like it is the only
Amiga resource I can depend on.

Kind regards
--
Don S.
~~~~~~
Don,
 I have no idea - and I did try to find out. We've received several
letters similar to yours. It's very disappointing - and disconcerting
- to have the venerable "Amazing" just pull an amazing vanishing act.
 Don Hicks, are you still there?
                K R U S E   N O W   A   R E B O L
The following announcement was posted recently on the web site of
Holger Kruse, developer of many of the Amiga's best pieces of
software:
Changes for the year 2000
 I am happy to announce that starting January, 2000 I will work for
REBOL Technologies in the capacity of Director of Network
Technologies.
 For those of you who have not heard about that company before: REBOL
Technologies (www.rebol.com) is a privately held company that was
founded by Carl Sassenrath, one of the premier developers of AmigaOS.
REBOL Technologies develops and distributes the scripting language
REBOL, a very intuitive programming language and run-time environment
with built-in Internet support and messaging capabilities. REBOL is
available for over 50 computer platforms, AmigaOS being one of them.
The basic version of REBOL is available for free, extensions are
available for license fees.
 Declining revenues from Amiga software sales and increased software
piracy in 1999 finally forced me to look for a full-time job outside
of my own company. Between several job offers I decided to accept the
offer by REBOL for several reasons. The most important one is that in
my opinion REBOL is currently one of the few truly innovative products
in the software market, and with Carl Sassenrath's history with
AmigaOS his company and its product in many ways reflect and represent
the Amiga spirit.
 With my background in AmigaOS and TCP/IP I am excited about the
opportunity to participate in the development of REBOL, in particular
in the improvement of its networking capabilities, the AmigaOS port
and ports for possible Amiga successors.
 I am afraid this new job means that I will no longer be able to work
full-time on my own Amiga software (Miami, Daytona etc.). This does
not mean that the software becomes unsupported or that I am leaving
the Amiga platform though. I intend to still provide updates and
support for existing software, as my time permits. Here are some
details about current plans for my Amiga software:
 - AmiWin: still supported. An update with 24-bit support and a newer
X11R6 kernel is still planned, but unlikely to be ready soon.
 - Daytona and related products: I am afraid Daytona and its planned
extensions have to be cancelled. There are two reasons for this: one
is lack of time: with my new full-time job I have to cut back
somewhere, and doing it on a project that is still in development
seems to be the most reasonable solution. The other reason is a
possible conflict of interests, because Java and REBOL are competitors
in the market of languages for distributed computing, which may make
it unethical for me to remain involved in Java-related software. I
have not yet determined what will happen to the Daytona sources. There
are several options, somewhat restricted by Sun's licensing
conditions, and I will try to find a solution that will somehow still
allow the existing Java VM of Daytona to be released to the Amiga
community, without future involvement or support from me though.
 - Miami: still fully supported. Version 3.3 is planned for release in
the year 2000.
 - Miami Deluxe: fully supported. After several delays and many
improvements the first full release including documentation will
probably be ready before Christmas, and after that development will
continue. Subject to demand the planned improvements for future
versions may include IPv6, IPsec, named, extensions to IP-NAT and
possibly dial-in support.
 - MiamiSSL: fully supported. A new version that incorporates the
latest OpenSSL changes and protocols is planned.
 - MiamiTelnet: fully supported, as part of the Miami Deluxe package.
Telnet encryption and support for running in a shell window are
planned for future versions.
 - ppp.device: still supported, but no new versions are planned. Miami
and Miami Deluxe should be considered successors of ppp.device.
 - ReOrg: not supported at this time. A version with support for NSD
and disks > 4 GB is something I am considering though, time
permitting.
 I will also have to move my residence from Winter Park, Florida to
Ukiah, California, where REBOL headquarters are located. This means my
LAN will have to move as well, including the server that handles Miami
registrations and orders. Because of that there will be some service
outages affecting my Internet presence during the months of December
'99 and possibly January 2000. Please see my separate announcements
about that. On the up side, chances are my LAN will get a DSL
connection in Ukiah, which should provide better reliability and much
faster responses, in particular for mailing lists, than the current
56k connection.
 Wishing everyone a happy holiday season and a successful year 2000.
 COSA HEADQUARTERS -- December 22, 1999 -- COSA (the Campaign to
Open-Source AmigaOS) today officially launched it's new sister
project, the Open Amiga Group, at Amigakernel.org.
 The Open Amiga Group has been created, in the spirit of the Christmas
season, to encourage and help developers, by providing a system where
Amiga projects and applications can be openned up to the contributions
of a team of Amiga developers, using the open-source model as a guide.
It is hoped this will lead to the creation of new high-quality Amiga
applications, and to the revival of stalled or abandoned projects,
which could be continued by a team of open-source Amiga programmers.
 Amiga developers will be able to use the Amigakernel.org website to
join existing projects (currently aMozillaX and AROS, with AmigaOS "in
reserve"), or to easily create projects of their own using the forms
available on the Amigakernel.org website.
 Through a variety of mailing lists, the Open Amiga Group will keep
developers who have registered with us informed of the latest projects
that are being set up, and in contact with other developers working on
the same projects. (It is our intention there be a mailing list for
users and a mailing list for developers for each project hosted by the
Open Amiga group.)
 Open-source projects can then either be hosted by Open Amiga using
our own resources - website, mailing list and tools (and the resources
of sourceforge.net), or we can simply provide links and references to
your own websites, mailing lists and tools.
 The Open Amiga project is a natural extention of COSA's charter,
which is to promote open-source within the Amiga community, and to
campaign for the release of the Amiga operating system as open source.
(It should be noted that negotiations with Amiga Inc's Tom Schmidt on
this matter are ongoing.) We also felt it would be wasteful not to
offer the 130 developers who have already registered with COSA as
"probable developers for an open-source AmigaOS" a chance to work on
other projects.
 For more information, or to register as a developer, or register an
existing open-source Amiga project on our pages, please visit
http://www.amigakernel.org to visit the Open Amiga Group's website, or
http://cosa.amigakernel.org for more information on COSA, the Campaign
to Open-Source AmigaOS, and for the latest news on the status of our
negotiations with Amiga Inc.
 In the spirit of this season of co-operation and friendship, we wish
the Amiga community a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May
the millennium mark a turning point in the Amiga's history, where we
finally reap the mainstream attention and respect that our platform
and it's powerful, speedy OS deserve.
New COSA Country Contacts for Germany and Portugal
December 7, 1999
 COSA are pleased to announce the creation of two new "country
contacts". Country Contacts are COSA members who have volunteered to
act as representatives for COSA in their home country and provide
translation services.
 There are current two Country Contacts. They are Volker Mohr from
Germany, who runs the Project IMP website, and Rui Manuel, from
Portugal.
 If you speak German (Deutsch) or Portugese (Portuguese), you should
feel free to contact either Volker or Rui and discuss any comments,
questions or suggestions you have about COSA or Open Source with them.
They'll be happy to help you.
 COSA wants to take this time to thank Volker and Rui for their help,
and for providing this valuable service. With their help, COSA is also
to reach out to people in other countries.
 Volker and Rui are also helping to translate the COSA webpages into
German and Portugese, and these translations will be put online when
they are ready. But this is hard work, so why not drop them an e-mail
and thank them? Or offer to help? They'd like to hear from you!
 English-speakers should still feel free to write to me, Steve
Crietzman. I will try my best to respond as quickly as I am able.
 Once again, our thanks to Volker and Rui! Welcome aboard the COSA
Team! :-)
-- Steve, Volker, Rui, and the ever-growing COSA Team
 {NOTE: the story didn't give information on how to contact these
folks. You might start at http://www.savetheamiga.org.uk and work from
there. Brad}
        Softwave Announces a new CD based Amiga Magazine
Dear Amigans,
 My name is Giorgio Signori, and I am the director of Softwave, a new
company born in Italy this summer. I have been writing on the only
Italian Amiga magazine, Enigma Amiga Run, in the past years, and I am
in Amiga environment since years. After years writing for Amiga, I
decided to build up a new company to publish an Amiga-only, CD-based
magazine. After a lot of work, at the Amiga show Softwave was there
with the first issue of Amiga.it, showed during the conference with
Petro Tyschtschenko. After this, we decided to publish Amiga.it, under
the name Amiga.news, also outside Italy. We put much effort in this,
translating, for now, the whole magazine in English. We will show and
sell the first issue of Amiga.news at the next Home Electronics World
of Cologne, on 12-14 November.
 We hope that the public response will be enough to convince us to
keep doing a multi-language magazine also for the next issues. If so,
since the 3rd issue, we will translate it also in German, as many of
you already requested. In the next days in this site will be published
the summary of the first issue.
 But now, some of the highlights of Amiga.news:
 The magazine part count many important writers here in Italy. Editors
like ing. Massimo Gais, system administrator of the Italian Aminet
node and of the Astronomic Observatory of Naples, like ing. Alessio
Cappelli, expert in Amiga and NetBSD environments. People like Massimo
Marino, writer for the biggest selling videogames magazine in Italy,
The Games Machine, and Nick Mordock, experienced Amiga writer since
years. Not to mention Andrea Favini, the 3000+ staff and Laura
Falzone, writers of proved experience.
 The CD part of Amiga.news differs from what we are used to see on the
market. it will not be a simple shareware collection. Of course it
will contain the recent shareware software from month to month, with
index and search function, but it will be thematic. The first issue of
Amiga.it, published only in Italian, had Linux as theme of the month,
with a RedHatPPC distribution and a serie of articles dedicated to
installation of Linux, but not only. Every month a different theme
will fill the CD. I can anticipate that on the issue that will be
presented at Cologne, there will be a much requested Linux68k/RedHat68
distribution, and a special on Star Wars on Amiga.
 I am available for every question, I will be happy to give all the
answers you may need, if you are a user or an Amiga
distributor/reseller. You can find me at the mailbox yurex@tin.it.
but the Amiga used to update Amiga Yellow Pages broke - OK?)
 To celebrate this great occasion, Amiga Yellow Pages have teamed up
with Amiga retailer FORE-MATT Home Computing to give away a copy of
 Don't despair if you already own it or don't have the required specs,
because those nice people at FORE-MATT will let you take your pick
from their £30.00 range which includes hits such as Wasted Dreams,
Pheonix Fighters and many more.
 Take a peep at the FORE-MATT Home Computing advert, on Amiga Yellow
 This model is specifically for the Amiga 2000 and 3000.
 Need a new keyboard for your Amiga? Find out its next to impossible
to get them anymore? How about a mouse? Same deal, and you cannot just
plug in one of those common PS/2 devices that you would find at your
common PC shop.. until now..
 The InsertMK/2 adapter will adapt a PS/2 mouse AND a PS/2 keyboard to
your Amiga 1200, 2000, 3000 4000 (* adapters needed for 1200/4000 *)
 Plug a PS/2 mouse and keyboar dinto this small 6x6x3cm box, then plug
the cables from the box into your keyboard adn you are set.
 The Amiga keys are now mapped to the Winodws keys on your standard
104-key Windows keyboard. The extra keys can be specifically
programmed with software at a later date
 The mouse adapter is unique. You can use a standard PS/2 mouse
(Logitech, Genius, Microsoft, etc..) and even one with a scroller
wheel. The whell is mapped to the up/down cursor keys. Its quite cool
to scroll through a webpage in your browser this way. :)
 They are also flash upgradable. Meaning any changes and upgrades
needed in the future can be performed with a simple flash upgrade
(just like a flash BIOS on a PC)
 This product is now in testing and is scheduled for release in late
December 1999. In the mean time, we need to know how many parts to
order to start assembly with!
 Dealer and distributor enquiries for quantity pricing is welcomed.
 AEMail Version 2.20 is now available. It can be obtained from AmiNet
or my web page:
 http://www.calweb.com/~jzachar/
 My web page is probably the best source for the AEMail archive since
it is "up to the minute". With AmiNet, it can take some time for the
archive to be replicated to the various mirror sites.
 AEMail Version 1.51 is a minor upgrade that corrects some last minute
bugs found after Version 1.50 was released. It also adds an additional
ARexx script "Addtogrp.aem" to the ARexx directory.
 AEMail Version 2.20 is a major revision of AEMail. This version has
restructured the Menus in AEMail providing a separate menu for
ARexx/DOS commands. It also allows you to call ARexx or DOS commands
from a menu list in addition to the function keys. The ARexx/DOS menu
has also been added to the "Edit and save message line to clipboard;
set ARexx variable" requester.
 AEMail Version 2.20 now also allows you to re-arrange your folder
lists and has added the "Move..." menu item to the Folders menu.
Additional edits have also been added when creating new folders to
prevent assigning illegal names to the folders. Any folder containing
the special characters :, \, or / are illegal as well as the name
"folder".
 The folder strip when, it extends beyond the visable window, is now
correctly displayed on systems using display boards and CyberGraphX
software. Previous versions displayed garbage in that part of the
folder strip when it was moved into the visable portion of the window.
Also, instead of specifying a display mode in the Configuration
Edit/General Page, you can select a clone of the workbench display
mode. Whatever you have selected as the display mode for the workbench
(from the Preferences/Display Mode setting) will be used for the
display mode for AEMail.
 Mime attachments that use the "multipart/alternative" mime
type/subtype are now correctly handled. This mime type/subtype is
widely used in the Macintosh and PC world. Also, headers using
Quoted-Printable notation are correctly handled.
 AEMail Version 2.20 also corrects some bugs found in Version 2.01.
 A complete list of new features, changes and the bugs corrected with
version 2.20 is given at the end of the AEMail.readme file. The readme
file is given in the AEMail archive and can also be found on my web
site which can be displayed with a browser.
 With the release of Version 2.00 at the Amiga '99 show in March of
this year, AEMail now utilizes ClassAct which has become part of the
new Amiga OS 3.5. The ClassAct Classes required are included with the
archive for OS Versions before 3.5. Amiga OS 3.5 includes the required
classes as part of the OS.
 For those of you with a version of AEMail prior to 2.00, AEMail no
longer automatically sends the special "Notification" message when you
send your first message. Instead, when you first load the new version
of AEMail a special requester will appear asking if you want to send
the notification message for updates and giving you the ability to
select what information you want to send. You can cancel this message,
but if you do, the requester will appear each time you load AEMail. Tf
you are a registered user and you cancel, you will be given the
opportunity to suppress the message the next time you load AEMail. For
unregistered users the requester will appear each time you load AEMail
whether or not you send the notification or cancel.
 The installation script also had been completely re-written starting
with AEMail 2.00 to allow you to create multiple icons for multiple
users of AEMail. Please read the INSTALL.TXT document before
attempting to install this version of AEMail.
Thanks,
John
MetalWEB 4.0 Prerelease 2
=========================
 MetalWeb is the first WYSIWYG HTML editor for AmigaOS. The philsophy
behind the software is that you should not need to understand HTML in
order to create pages within MetalWEB. You can create web pages via a
DTP style editor or the 'old way' via a tabbed, coloured text based
source window. Indeed, like the award-winning Dreamweaver you can
open both the edit and source window, work within one of the windows,
whilst the other window updates, automagically!
 Programmer: Pedro Luis 'MultitasK' Mieza
 <multitaskers@retemail.es>
 <multitask@vapor.com>
 Co-Programmer: Josep 'MetalGear' Rubiralta
 <pep-multitask@retemail.es>
 Even better, highlight an area (ie. some text) within the editor
window, and the specific HTML source is updated concurrently.
 MetalWeb also ships with a MetalMap module, allowing you to create
advanced imagemaps, via an easy to use interface.
 Please don't use a pirated copy :(.
New Features:
=============
    - Memory Use Reduced a lot (Requires 2 megs aprox)
    - Drag'n'drop keep out
    - Cursor to edit text as a DTP editor
    - Mark option enable to cut, copy and paste
    - New Imagemap Editor
            now it's an external program linked by arexx commands
    - Speedbar.mcc
    - TearOff.mcc
    - TextInput.mcc
Nova Design and Newtek Announce Availability of Millennium
The Millennium is Here!
 Millennium for the Amiga Video Toaster/Flyer is here now. It's
extremely cool, it's wildly powerful, and it will give your Toaster
and Toaster/Flyer amazing new powers to help you make your work look
better than ever before!
 The Millennium package is presented by Newtek and has been produced
by Nova Design, Inc. in cooperation with all prominent Toaster/Flyer
developers. It is not to be missed.
What's Inside
 Millennium is not merely a single package. It is a collection of
software, scripts, effects, fonts, backgrounds, and other content
designed to update your Video Toaster and Flyer dramatically.
Millennium was designed to be the largest, most comprehensive, upgrade
you could put on your system. Millennium is for the Toaster owner as
well as the Flyer owner.
 You'll find some old favorites are now part of the Millennium
package. Some packages you will be familiar with and some will be
brand new to you. Some existing packages have been upgraded
significantly for the Millennium release and some have been made
Toaster-friendly and Flyer-friendly as well. Here is a list of what
you will find in Millennium.
 o Wipe Studio - You may be familiar with the 'lite' version-but this
is the complete package! Use it to create your own wipes and effects
for the Toaster and Flyer.
 o RenderFX - Upgraded for Millennium, this package allows you to
render your FlyerClip sequences down to a new FlyerClip. You can then
layer more video, CG, and effects for a far more impressive
production.
 o Flyer Utilities - Includes utilities for converting Toaster wipes
between 3.x and 4.x formats, Undeleting FlyerClips, Timecoding and
much more.
 o ProMix - Also upgraded for Millennium, this package provides audio
tools to let you add audio to video, import/export audio formats, add
audio to FlyerClips and animations, and more.
 o Fast Frames - Allows you to 'Toasterize' your Video Flyer by
pre-recording CG sequences, Framestore montages, and create flying CG
effects and more.
 o Fast Fuel - Adds video deck control to the Toaster/Flyer interface
for automatic clip recording.
 o Electric Scene Knife - This can save you literally hours of work.
The Knife can take a FlyerClip and automatically find the different
scenes within it, mark them, and even offer to cut them into separate
FlyerClips for you.
 o Flyer Backup - A script based system that can backup your actual
FlyerClips to a hard drive or to removable media.
 o CGPilot - The famous CG ARexx scripts that automate many time
consuming CG tasks.
 o Toaster Wipes and Effects - There are hundreds of these and most
are available for both Toaster 3.x and 4.x so both Toaster and Flyer
owners can use them. These include wedding wipes, fire wipes, basic
animated wipes, cool soft gradient wipes, and fully rotoscoped motion
matte wipes.
 o MegFX - 41 Flyer-project croutons, which produce real-time
dual-stream split-screen effects and real-time layer-mixed dual-stream
effects directly in Flyer projects.
 o Backgrounds - Hundreds of full color, professionally drawn,
backgrounds for you to use in your CG pages or in ToasterPaint.
 o Control Tower - Adds tons of new effects and macros to your Flyer
 system.
 o Full motion backgrounds - FlyerClips of animated scenes, fire, and
more. You can use these with your Flyer for CG backgrounds or as
royalty-free stock footage.
 There are many other features of Millennium. We've really just
touched the surface of all the tools and content that are included in
Millennium to make your Toaster and Flyer more productive for you.
Millennium also includes hundreds of new ARexx commands for scripting,
programmer's manuals for the ProMix and RenderFX tools and more.
The package will include three CDROMs filled with wipes, effects, fonts,
backgrounds, software and more; full printed documentation, a video tape
containing demos of the package, tutorials, and promotions for other
Toaster/Flyer products.
Check this out!
 Millennium is available from your favorite Amiga Video Toaster/Flyer
 Yeah!!! that`s right Simon the Sorcerer 2 is finally being released
on the Amiga, and about time too.
 Reserve your copy now. There will be a limited number manufactured -
So chances are if you don`t reserve your copy, you won`t get one.
 Simon the Sorcerer 2 - This isn't just any old 'Child in fantasyland'
story. For starters, no other kids have to put up with useless old
wizards, unattractive heroines, baddies that simply don't know when to
stay dead and being the last one in school to discover puberty.
 Armed with a pointy hat (stupid looking), a pony tail (even more
stupid looking) and a tendency to irritate people twice his size,
Simon returns in this action packed sequel which promises to be more
entertaining, amusing and fun than any other adventure of it's type
(allegedly). It's amazing the sort of rubbish you can read on these
sales leaflets. `s right Simon the Sorcerer 2 is finally being
From VaporWare
 NetInfo-II is a network information viewer utility. It integrates the
functionality of the well known standalone Traceroute, Ping, Whois and
Finger programs into one seamless GUI application.
 Instead of gathering the information about a host and the Internet
route to it manually, you just enter a hostname and click Start.
NetInfo-II does the rest for you!
Features
 o "quick traceroute": Sends a series of packet in quick succession to
get a route overview very fast, then does accurate timings for the
individual hops
 o graphical display of hop min/last/max timings
 o integrated smart WHOIS function: double-click on a IP, Host or
Network column to automatically receive WHOIS information for the
given object. NetInfo determines the WHOIS host to query.
 o automatically retrieves WHOIS network information for hosts
 o automatically scans destination host for Web (HTTP) and FTP server
versions
 o history for all queried hosts
 o integrated FINGER client
 o integrated "classical" WHOIS client with on-disk cache
MorphOS PowerPC OS announcement
Today we announce the availability of a new Amiga next generation PowerPC
OS project, called MorphOS, to the public.
In its current state it provides a modern memory protection microkernel
which runs a virtual amiga emulation.  This microkernel will be the base
for a new OS layer.
Research for this project started in early 1998, while at the end of 1998
an early implementation was ready.  In 1999, we started on the virtual
amiga emulation to make the current AmigaOS available without requiring 68K
hardware. The basic design goals behind MorphOS are
- memory protection
- resource tracking
- asynchronous message system
- low interrupt latency
- virtual memory (optional)
- distributed computing
- symmetrical multi processing (SMP)
- recursive memory management
- task/thread and clan/chief model
- clean design with an elegant API
- micro/pico kernel mixture
The developer release is planned for end of January.  Minimum system
requirements are
- A4000 with CyberStorm PPC/604e and Symbios 770 SCSI
- CyberVisionPPC
- at least 32MB memory installed
- Kickstart 3.1 (Version 40.68) and Workbench 3.1 or up
Hardware requirements might change as soon as more hardware setups are
tested and implemented.
As the success of this project will also depend on your feedback/support,
we suggest that interested developers visit our project webpage for a
general MorphOS overview and information on how to join us to help.
Feel free to enter the project webpage at
http://www.morphos.de or
http://www.morphos.ch
SatTrack
Andreas R. Kleinert writes:
I recieved a request from an english Amiga user:
Colin Knight is looking for a year2000-compliant update for the satelite tracking program SatTrack (Aminet:misc/sci/SatTrack_v42.lha) or a comparable replacement.
There has to be a German author involved in the program, but there is no e-mail address contained in the archive, and the contact information seems to be outdated.
If someone is also interested in this area, or can provide further information, should please contact Colin Knight by e-mail (disabled right now, but it shouldn't be bounced), or with a quick phone call at +44-703-613855. (ps)
Official open-source AmigaOS development page
There is now a developer's list for people who want to work as a developer to help build the future of AmigaOS! The list is for all those people who said "Yes, I will help you work on AmigaOS. I want to be part of the team that writes AmigaOS in the future." The list is for YOU. Please send a blank e-mail to:
amigaos-dev-subscribe@egroups.com And you will be added to the NEW "AmigaOS Developers List".
I would like to see as MANY of you there as possible. If, when AmigaOS goes Open Source, you want your name to to go up in lights as being on the first team of programmers, you can do that by joining the list above. This list is meant to discuss the "how" issues of developing AmigaOS, so that we are ready to go once we've got the source code.
Press Release
For Immediate Release
E-Mail: president@amigakernel.org
ANNOUNCING THE OPEN AMIGA GROUP AND AMIGAKERNEL.ORG,
A NEW ORGANISATION AND WEBSITE FOR AMIGA DEVELOPERS
WILL ENCOURAGE OPENNESS, CO-OPERATION AND TEAMWORK IN AMIGA SOFTWARE
DEVELOPMENT, AND PROVIDE A
COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR OPEN-SOURCE
AMIGA PROJECTS
COSA HEADQUARTERS -- December 22, 1999 -- COSA
(the Campaign to Open-Source AmigaOS) today officially launched it's new
sister project, the Open Amiga Group, at Amigakernel.org.
The Open Amiga Group has been created, in the spirit of the Christmas
season, to encourage and help developers, by providing a system where Amiga
projects and applications can be openned up to the contributions of a team
of Amiga developers, using the open-source model as a guide. It is hoped
this will lead to the creation of new high-quality Amiga applications, and
to the revival of stalled or abandoned projects, which could be continued by
a team of open-source Amiga programmers.
Amiga developers will be able to use the Amigakernel.org website to join
existing projects (currently aMozillaX and AROS, with AmigaOS "in reserve"),
or to easily create projects of their own using the forms available on the
Amigakernel.org website.
Through a variety of mailing lists, the Open Amiga Group will keep
developers who have registered with us informed of the latest projects that
are being set up, and in contact with other developers working on the same
projects. (It is our intention there be a mailing list for users and a
mailing list for developers for each project hosted by the Open Amiga
group.)
Open-source projects can then either be hosted by Open Amiga using our own
resources - website, mailing list and tools (and the resources of
sourceforge.net), or we can simply provide links and references to your own
websites, mailing lists and tools.
The Open Amiga project is a natural extention of COSA's charter, which is to
promote open-source within the Amiga community, and to campaign for the
release of the Amiga operating system as open source. (It should be noted
that negotiations with Amiga Inc's Tom Schmidt on this matter are ongoing.)
We also felt it would be wasteful not to offer the 130 developers who have
already registered with COSA as "probable developers for an open-source
AmigaOS" a chance to work on other projects.
For more information, or to register as a developer, or register an existing
open-source Amiga project on our pages, please visit
http://www.amigakernel.org to visit the Open Amiga Group's website, or
http://cosa.amigakernel.org for more information on COSA, the Campaign to
Open-Source AmigaOS, and for the latest news on the status of our
negotiations with Amiga Inc.
In the spirit of this season of co-operation and friendship, we wish the
Amiga community a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May the
millennium mark a turning point in the Amiga's history, where we finally
reap the mainstream attention and respect that our platform and it's
powerful, speedy OS deserve.
## END
Note: Anyone with questions about this release should contact Steve
Crietzman, President of COSA/Open Amiga on the number at the
top of this release.
clickBOOM offers Quake sources for download
clickBOOM has also released the Quake1 sources by ID Software. clickBOOM offers help for programmers wanting to do a PPC implementation. The best PPC versions will be offered for download at clickBOOM, with a note that owning the original game is required for the PPC version.
Can someone clarify this: When ID Software officially releases the source code, and a programmer develops a PPC version from it, why is one required to own the original CD from clickBOOM? Or is there a difference between the sources from ID Software and clickBOOM? It would be nice if you would share your knowledge with us in the forum. (ps)
SecondSpin v1.85 / JST Version 2.9c
SecondSpin v1.85 released
SecondSpin is a new encoder that doesn't have to be started from Shell, but offers an easy-to-use GUI. For encoding the MPEG files, the packet relies on the LAME encoder. The audio tracks can be loaded directly from the Audio-CD, and converted to MPEG Audio files. AIFF and WAV files can be converted, with the conversion MPEG -> AIFF being possible too, with support for layer 1, 2 and 3. New: Now also supports conversion of Protracker, XM, S3M and Fasttracker modules to AIFF or MP3. Download.
Aminet GUI update
Alexander Kurtz writes:
I applied some changes to the layout of the interactive area. You can now easily switch between areas. For technical reasons I cannot offer the chat room anymore! I am looking for a new system hopefully usable for Amiga browsers. If you sill want to chat, I can warmly recommend #miggy.de. It is available on de.arcnet.vapor.com. Try it.
Moreover I want to announce that work on the reworked layout of the seperate directory pages is almost finished. I think I can put the expanded layout online starting next year. Since I am not at home from December 24th to somewhat around January 3rd, there won't be updates during this time. And since this update is the last one for this year, I want to wish all users a merry christmas, and a happy new year 2000. Thank you to all visiting my page regulary, and I hope you come back in 2000 to my Aminet GUI! (ps)
Followup to the statement concerning development of HSMathLibs
Matthias Henze writes:
In this statement I wrote that many users complained about bad support. It occured to me that many forums and mailing lists carried postings about the stormamiga.lib and the HSMathLibs. Obviously there are many questions on the subject, the answers of other users are however seldom close to the truth. Guesses, rumors, speculations and half-truths are spread, but almost nobody comes up with the idea to contact the author, me.
I cannot know every forum and mailinglist. If you have a question, a comment, criticism etc., has to tell me, and not simply complain about bad support. Questions and comments on the subject please by e-mail to Matthias_Henze@CyberdyneSystems.de. (ps)
the biggest Amiga game ever will be ready very soon, so it's time to show you more of it.
You'll have to try to imagine it at 640x480 16-bit gfx and 16-bit sound. :)
Fake Warning!
The latest Aminet upload of "VersionWB" (3.0) in util/sys is a fake. In the program itself, (probably) only the version number has been changed, the file has the same size as the current v2.12. The archive has been expanded by some "jokes".
Håkan Parting, author of VersionWB, writes:
If you have installed the fake version, please remove it again and replace the VersionWB command with the original. If the fake contains a virus is not yet known. Download the original: VersionWB2_12.lha. (ps)
Lambda - 3d space action game
In his Lambda status report Mikko says that most basic functions of the new 3D engine have been defined and implemented in OpenGL. That "Descent: Freespace" will now be ported was a slap in his face, since he begun Lambda development because there were no up-to-date 3D space action games for Amiga. After he recovered from the initial shock, he is wildly determined to make Lambda better than its pendant.
Does anybody know the e-mail address of Mikko Kallinen? If so, please send a short e-mail. (ps)
BUGFIX Installerscript VersCheck V2
Three days ago a bug sneaked into the VersCheckV2 Installer script. For those who didn't already fix the bug on their own:
  1. The fixed archive is on my homepage, and will soon be available from Aminet too. Download: VersCheckV2.lha
  2. Only available from my homepage is a second archive containing only the Installer script. Download: VersCv2Fix1.lha - 11 Kb.
  3. For those daring enough: In line 31 of the script, a ")" is missing at the end of the line - that's it. Somehow it got lost. The Installer message says line 1163 or such, because the effect of the missing bracket is not recognized earlier.
1.) CSC: A new PC client, twice as fast as the old one, is available.
2.) RC5: An older 68k (beta) RC5 client is available, which does not support some details of the latest client (like status bar and statistics with Myzar), but is about 30% faster. I tried it and it works very well, my 68060 does about 148 kkeys/sec instead of the 117 kkeys it did before. If you only use the client for calculating, I did not encounter problems. So:
2a.) get blocks with the latest client
2b.) calculate blocks with the beta client
2c.) submit blocks with the latest client, and continue with 2a.)... (ps)
X-Surf network cards delivered
Jens Schönfeld writes:
This morning, the X-Surf ethernet cards have been delivered to all distributors at the same time, a full week delayed. The delay of the delivery was however not due to technical problems, but due to my car accident: I was busy handling police, insurance and the company that towed away my car (by the way, anyone interested in a Volvo 850 crash car?). Since the cards will reach customers before christmas, however, I think I can be pardoned, can I? (ps)
Cloanto Releases Amiga Forever Holiday Bundle: New ROMs & MP3s
For all Amiga emulation enthusiasts who ever wondered what Workbench 1.0 looked like, or what the late Jay Miner, "Father of the Amiga", has to say in his own voice about the Amiga and other interesting issues, Cloanto just released the Amiga Forever Plus Pack, which contains new Amiga ROM, Workbench and MP3 audio files! The Plus Pack joins the Amiga Forever family of emulation and support products, which are officially licensed by Gateway's Amiga companies.
Only for the next few days, the Online Edition of Amiga Forever 3.0 (stand-alone) and the Amiga Forever Plus Pack are available in a special holiday bundle for a special price.
The Amiga Forever Holiday Bundle includes the Amiga Forever Online Edition package, with its preinstalled Amiga emulation environment (1.3 and 3.1 Amiga ROM and OS) and the Amiga Explorer networking software, plus the following new items, which are part of the Plus Pack:
  • Amiga Workbench ADF files v. 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 2.04 and 2.1
  • Amiga ROM files v. 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 and 2.04 (WB 2.1 uses 2.04 ROM)
  • Jay Miner MP3 Track 1: Birth of the Amiga
  • Jay Miner MP3 Track 2: Computers and Society
  • Jay Miner MP3 Track 3: A New Job
  • New HTML pages, including instructions to play MP3 audio files
For download convenience, the items are archived in two files which can be downloaded separately, also with the help of an optional download wizard. It is always possible to resume an interrupted download, or to download the same file again at no additional cost. The Plus Pack is cross-platform, while Amiga Forever Online Edition is for Windows systems only.
The Amiga Forever Holiday Bundle is available now from the Amiga Forever Home Page at http://cloanto.com/amiga/forever/ (title link)
The Cloanto Team wishes all Amiga fans great holidays and a very happy New Year! (ps)
Translator wanted!
Since the "restart" of the English pages of Amiga-News, the daily translations are a one-man-job again because Marek didn't respond so far.
I am looking for users willing (long-term) to do German - English translations regulary of all news items appearing on a given day of the week (or two), and send them to me by e-mail.
You don't need to know HTML well. If you can type <A HREF=""> and <OBJECT><UL><LI>, know the pop-up menu of your favourite browser and can handle a text editor, you qualify. :-) Oh, and you should be able to read (and understand) German. ;-)
Those interested in supporting Amiga-News this way should contact me by e-mail. (ps)
We are switching the website completely to SSI (Server Side Includes). Therefore some links to subpages might not yet work perfectly. In this case, the "Home Button" does however always bring you back to the main page. We hope to finish the change tonight (December 17th). Tomorrow we will be back with the news. (ps)
Epic Marketing
Epic Marketing News
Did you enjoy the charming adventures of little Simon as much as we did? Did you always hope for the successor to be ported to Amiga? Have you been mad because this great game was only available for PC? Now there is the opportunity to change this...
Epic Marketing got the license to port Simon The Sorcerer II to Amiga. On the one hand, we are of course very proud to get the opportunity to port this great adventure to the Amiga. But with the latest ongoings at Amiga (Inc) we have to ask ourselves how many Amiga users at all are interested in a first class game? The license, the porting and the production of SImon The Sorcerer II won't be cheap. So we decided to do a pre-order campaign. We need 500 pre-orders to do Simon The Sorcerer II for Amiga. When we reach the 500 limit, the game should be available in 8 weeks.
We will update the pre-order data on our homepage weekly. Simon The Sorcerer will run on all AGA or gfx board systems with 030 CPU and sufficient memory (about 8 MB fast). The game will only be released on CD.
Please place your pre-orders here:
Amiga games wish list
Andreas Magerl writes:
On our homepage, area "Aktion", you'll find a form for entering your top 5 wish list for games on Amiga. The submissions are evaluated regulary, and published in each issue of Amiga Future and our homepage.
Of course it only makes sense if enough users participate. The idea is to show coders and companies over a long timespan which games are wanted by Amiga users. (ps)
AmigaOS 3.5 - self-made fix for broken AGA buttons
Michaela Prüß writes:
For all those who still have the problem with AWeb 3 SE (OS 3.5), or probably all other AWeb versions, too, that there are some colored dots instead of the buttons at the top: There is a way to fix it (already reported to amiga.de):
Load images/def_buttons in a graphics program (I did it with PPaint). Expand the palette from 8 to 16 colors, and copy the 8 colors to the 8 new ones. Then adjust the first 8; it doesn't matter to what, but it must not be any of the original 8 colors. With PPaint, all you have to do is commiting a color adjustment, and the buttons look like before (almost, I had to swith RED and GREEN manually). Then cut it out (preferrably more precise than I did), and save it as imags/def_buttons (back up the original, you never know...). With the 16-color version it worked on first try, and I can finally see the buttons. If someone gets it done precisely, please send me a copy - I never got the hang to paint programs...
Oh, yes, the 16 colors. Don't tell me you surf with 8 colors and it wouldn't work that way. If you surf the web with 8 colors, you should be used to looks like that...
Dennis Gronewald followed up:
There is an easy way to get rid of the gfx bugs in AWeb. Simply enter the image drawer of AWeb. Here you find the file "def_Buttons". Simply put braces around the "Transparent" tool type. Worked for me. (ps)
New CD32 game
Andreas Etzrodt writes:
Good news: We recieved permission by Petro Tyschtschenko himself to offer CD32 games. Without license fees. Citing Petro: "Dear Andreas, we don't want to make money by that. As long as it is not commercial, it's free." Since we already distribute it as Shareware, luckily we don't face any additional costs.
By the way, many have misunderstood our first announcement. Of course we don't want to release a commercial game, with pressed CDs including cover. We want to create a runnable CD32 CD with our own CD-R. Of course it will include a cover, but only a self-printed one.
So interested CD32 owners can contact us, and probably place their pre-order. The CD will not cost more than 15 Euro, probably much less (we did not yet calculate what is possible).
Oh, and for those who missed the first announcement: We talk about the Shareware game "SHARKS!", which is available as demo version from Aminet. Most likely it will be adapted to AGA, so the hardware performance of the CD32 is used.
Source code for DESCENT 2 released!
Sascha Koebner writes:
At the title link, capable Amiga coders can download the source code for 'Descent 2' (by Interplay), and of course port it (!). 'Descent 2' is the successor of the successful 360 degree 3D shooter. The comparatively smart KI, and the heavily improved 3D engine compared to 'Descent 1' should be enough motivations for coders to try their skills at it. It seems to be the source code for the PC version 1.2. (ps)
COMPARING CLICKBOOM AMIGA AUCTIONS TO EBAY
Sure, eBay is the name in online auctioning, however, when it comes to selling Amiga goods, clickBOOM's Amiga Auctions are simply a better choice:
  1. Amiga Auctions are free!
  2. Auctions held at Amiga Auctions actually have a better selling rate than eBay !
  3. Amiga Auctions support English and German !
  4. Amiga Auctions have several layout designs to choose from !
  5. At Amiga Auctions you can choose from a list of Amiga hardware photographs, and having a photo Auction is free !
  6. Amiga Auctions show approximate price in 3 other currencies !
  7. Amiga Auctions are ran by the Amiga community, for the Amiga community !
VersCheck V2 FINAL RELEASE
Michaela Prüß writes:
Starting immediately, VersCheck v2.19 (FINAL RELEASE) is available for download from my homepage. An Aminet upload has been submitted, it should be available there tomorrow.
FINAL RELEASE, since I need the next version of VersCheck for my Install script project, so I finished everything important that was left open or undone, and created a last update release. The next version will therefore be v3 (assuming there are no necessary bugfixes to do). What has changed?
  • Some settings can be done by ENV:
  • The whole version sensing has been reworked, being faster and safer
  • Output can optionally be done in ANSI (so important things can be highlighted)
  • A small statistic has been added
  • Some small and large fixes have been done, internal help -? updated
  • Two bad memory faults, which seldomly occured, but were there in the old version, have been detected and removed
  • Special News-Doc in the doc drawer "NewInThisVersion"
  • New .catalogs (update only German / English so far. So do the update with Installer only)
  • Internal ReqTools requesters replaced by ASL requesters. I had problems getting the old requesters to work with WarpOS and PowerUP, with numerous memory faults. The ASL requesters do work, and are 100% identical with WarpOS and PowerUP.
To all who still have my Webjump homepage in their bookmarks: Due to the bad bandwidth and continuous server downtimes, I moved the pages to http://24.132.37.25/~Gateway/, a different, very fast "free web service" (for all still looking for such, have a look at http://24.132.37.25/index.html). The old address does however link to the current page. Since I wanted it to be easier, there are direct adresses to the pages (please only use these, web layout will change shortly).
  • http://Gateway.To/Gateway5 (login with language choice)
  • http://Gateway.To/Gateway5/D (German contents)
  • http://Gateway.To/Gateway5/E (English contents)
  • NW:LGateway5 (NETWORD call) does currently NOT work with the three Amiga browsers, only with Netscape and IE. Should be implemented some time, however.
(ps)
AminetGUI
Alexander Kurtz writes:
Following a wish by Ingo Bowe, greetings to you, I expanded the upload list by a new function. This function allows changing the list sorting, which can now be done by date or directory. Also new is the server choice. By clicking on the country flag you can switch to the uploads of the according mirror server. This function is also available for the search function. For the other directories this is in the works.
In the update of December 10th, I made an embarrasing mistake, which has already been fixed. However, I realized that some 4.x versions of Netscape Navigator do have problems with my target tags. I try to fix the problem as soon as possible.
On this point, I want to mention my forum and my guestbook. Both can be found in the top bar at "Interactive". Tell me what you think of my page, or whatever you have to say about Amiga. I am looking forward to your posts. (ps)
TreeList source code released
John Haubrich, too, has released the source code for almost all his programs. Download: www.kc.net/~johnhkc/amigasrc/
He writes:
Nearly all of my Amiga source code has been released on my web page including source for the lovely TreeList MUI custom class. If you are planning to update TreeList, I have a few suggestions:
  1. Implement a getter that returns the order of the tree.
  2. Use this value to dynamically allocate stack space for the iterator methods instead of requiring the class user to allocate the buffer manually. (What do you think of THAT, Allan?? Trust me -- he likes it!)
  3. Send a unique code into the iterators so that multiple iterators may still be used. ** The only problem is: who frees the stack buffers? I guess you'll need a FinishUsingIterator method.
Finally, I'm selling my A4000T on EBay (soon) which has all the source and more...
P.S. If 100 people will send me $100,000 each, I'll continue developing for Amiga. ;-) (ps)
Press Release
DATE:     14-Dec-99
TOPIC:    NL-editing system for Amiga, Flyer and Draco
CONTACT:  info@audiolabs.it
AmigaOS goes back to Hollywood!
EMRL (http://www.emrl.com) is handling the production of the first
AudioLabs (http://www.audiolabs.it) commercial shot on film, focusing
on the ProStationAudio software for AmigaOS.
Stills from the set are online at:
                 http://www.audiolabs.it/news.html
                 http://usa.audiolabs.it/news.html
The location was Chapman University audio studio, in Los Angeles.
The 30 second commercial was shot in color using an Arriflex SR16
camera, with Kodak Vision film. The script deals with a studio
recording session, involving a cellist playing in the recording
room, while a sound engineer works on ProStationAudio for AmigaOS
in the control room.
The film footage will be digitally captured for post-prodution
on an Amiga-based NewTek Flyer system. Audio post-production
will be performed with ProStationAudio itself.
EMRL is pioneering hi-quality film-based productions for Internet
distribution. Their film-based commercials are shot with care for
classic aspects of production such as lighting and exposure, and
also take into account Internet related details like video
compression and motion artifacts reduction.
To celebrate the last ProStationAudio release of this millennium,
AudioLabs is offering, until December 27th, 1999, the fresh new
ProStationAudio 2.50 at a special discount price.
When ordering before the deadline, you can get ProStationAudio 2.50
for US$299 instead of US$395.
ProStationAudio 2.50 is the ultimate solution for digital audio on
AmigaOS. It integrates with existing technologies and pushes them
forward: from native Studio16 files support to NewTek Flyer audio
clips import/export, from Draco binary compatibility to AHI-compatible
support for almost every card on the market, from Elite/SoundStage
EDL import to dual-CPU/dual-monitor operating modes.
Starting January, AudioLabs will expand the ProStationAudio family
of products with the hi-end ProStationAudio Millennium. The new
application, among other features, doubles editing power by
supporting 32 audio channels in the timeline.
