Warp3D 3.0 available
The changes are mostly internal, new functions in the API, and support for
a new feature of the Permedia 2 (Chroma keying). For the user, the archive
offers the possibility to use MiniGL compiled programs, like the upcoming
GLQuake. There's also a small MiniGL-compiled demo in the archive, to give
you an idea of what's to come :)
Please note that this is only the user archive, I'm currently putting
finishing touches to the developer stuff, and hopefully this will be
available this weekend (But don't kick me if it isn't :)
If you find any bugs, please let me know. It's been tested mainly with the
CGX 4 driver, and it will probably not work with Picasso96 V2 (there where
some changes in P96 V2 that prevent Warp3D from working), but it should
work with the 1.4x release.

Heise: Microsoft in court: Will the Windows sourcecode be made public?
«Bill Gates apparently agrees to make the Windows sourcecode public
if this can make an agreement in the anti-trust-proceedings against Microsoft
possible. At least the American business TV Bloomberg-TV made this claim
after an interview with the ex-Microsoft boss and current Chief Software
Architect of the software company from Redmond. The denial by Microsoft
came immediately: Microsoft spokesman Jim Cullinan rejected the
information as "not true". Gates only said that the company would do its
best to achieve an agreement with the US government.
Bloomberg, though, sticks to its report despite the denial. Bill Gates would
indeed have stated Microsoft would not make the Windows sourcecode public to compete
with other open-source-systems. According to Bloomberg, he emphasized that
the "closed" sourcecode would make Windows more reliable. But he would have
stated in reply to the question what would make a "reasonable" solution for
reaching a settlement out of court: "If we can have an agreement, we will
do our best to achieve it". After the end of the TV recording of the
interview, Gates would have replied to the direct question whether this
would include the disclosure of the Windows sourcecodes explicitely with
"yes". "If that is all that's necessary", Gates added according to Bloomberg
with a smile.»

StrICQ
|
StrICQ becomes Open Source
Douglas F. McLaughlin has decided to release the sourcecode of the current
StrICQ version under the GNU conditions. Douglas won't stop the development
of StrICQ, but will make a new version. Currently, he's planning for version 2.0
which will be called StrICQ+ and which will contain many new features.
Those interested in adding their own improvements or extensions to the
current sourcecode may do this as long as they accept the GNU Public License
conditions. Also, they should put their extensions at the author's disposal.
Douglas will program version 2.0 in C++ and not any longer in C. He cannot
start with it, though, before he finished moving into his new house. Douglas
further declares that at the beginning he intended only to write a small
ICQ client and that he has learned so much in the last two years that he's
now confidential to make with version 2.0, which will be rewritten from the
scrap up, a really good ICQ client.

they hope the new layout would be finished in the midst of March. The manufacturing of
the prototype will then take three more weeks. If everything is okay and with a little
bit of luck this prototype will be completely operational and in the best case they can
begin with the first deliveries at the end of April 2000; in case of errors being found,
this will be delayed for three to four weeks.

AROS
The Aros website has been changed and improved. The beginning of the page
has a News summary concerning new developments and changes. The autodocs
have been completely relocated.
Also read the press release by Steve Crietzman about the strategic
partnership between Open Amiga Foundation and AROS:
PRESS RELEASE
16 FEBRUARY 2000
Media Contact: Steve Crietzman
President and CEO
Open Amiga Foundation
Tel: +44 (0)1778 393323
OPEN AMIGA FOUNDATION AND AROS ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIP
16 February 2000 -- The Open Amiga Foundation and AROS are to
enter into a strategic relationship which they believe will be
of great benefit to their organisations, their members and the
wider Amiga community. In the words of Open Amiga president
Steve Crietzman, "our objectives are compatible, it makes sense
for us to work together."
Under the terms of the deal, the Open Amiga Foundation (formerly
known as Open Amiga/COSA), will become the organisation
responsible for public relations, marketing, business and
legal affairs of the open-source AmigaOS project.
The Open Amiga Foundation, led by Steve Crietzman, will also
oversee the creation and development of Standards Bodies, Working
Groups and Development Teams to focus on the development of modern
standards, and the production of high-quality Amiga software and
applications for an open-source Amiga OS.
The Open Amiga Foundation will also handle general promotion of
open standards, open platforms and open-source software within the
Amiga world.
It is our intention to fill the vacuum left by the disappearance
of Commodore's CATS and Developer Support programme, and the lack
of decent high-quality application software.
The Amiga Research OS project, led by Aaron Digulla, will handle
the actual development of the Amiga Operating System core. As
part of this, OAF have agreed to encourage all our developers
to register with the AROS project, and to delegate Amiga OS core
development to AROS. AROS will continue to operate independently
from Open Amiga, but our relationship nonetheless acts, as Aaron
Digulla put it, "like a symbiosis."
The Amiga Research OS (AKA "AROS") project will, in a sense, become
the Amiga Operating System development wing of the Open Amiga
Foundation, and will focus it's efforts on development of AmigaOS/
AROS, should the Amiga operating system be released as open source,
as we hope it will be (and are working extremely hard to achieve).
Open Amiga will complement this by handling the legal and business
affairs of the project, which Aaron Digulla said was "a big relief
for us here at AROS."
We believe an alliance between the leading open-source OS development
team on the Amiga platform (AROS), and the far-reaching resources of
the Open Amiga Foundation are a match made in heaven, and with our
combined resources, we have the resources and the skills to achieve
great things together.
It is our mutual goal to chart a future for the Amiga operating
system that is ambitious, radical and far-reaching, and gives the
AmigaOS a chance of real survival and growth, as an independent
OS preserving its own unique identity.
And by listening to the Amiga community on the Internet and at
trade shows, we have seen that this what many in the community
WANT. They WANT AmigaOS, not some hybrid, alternative or
"inspired by the Amiga concept" OS. They want AmigaOS, and
they want it to survive, and perhaps more importantly, to grow.
Pure and simple.
Our strategy is to give the community what they want, to address
all of these concerns, and deliver improved, portable and free
versions of the AmigaOS for a variety of next-generation CPUs
and platforms.
People will be able to choose to run AmigaOS on top of another
kernel if that is their wish (in order to benefit from Linux
driver support and such like), but they will not be forced to
do so. AmigaOS will be able to function independently. We
believe this is what a great many people in the community
wants.
Questions and queries regarding the future of AmigaOS as "open
source software" should be directed to Open Amiga, which is
acting in the capacity of an overall parent/public relations
organisation.
Developers wishing to participate, either in the development
of the OS core itself, or in working as part of a development team
to create software or applications for the Amiga, should apply
through Open Amiga Foundation, and you will be put in touch with
the appropriate people managing the projects you are interested in.
Current Working Groups include AROS, led by Aaron Digulla, and
our Streaming Media Working Group, led by Ian Parker. Other
Working Groups, Standards Bodies and Development Teams will be
created in due course.
###
Questions and Answers
QUESTION: Is this a merger between AROS and Open Amiga?
ANSWER: No. Both groups will continue to operate
independently, neither will have operational control
over the other. We are merely pooling our resources,
and dividing up roles between us.
QUESTION: How will this co-operation function in practice?
ANSWER: Both groups will work very closely together, and we
will have very clearly defined roles. We are working on the
same strategy, but we share the various roles, and we are
better at different things. (With regards to AmigaOS:
AROS is the development project, OAF is the business/
organisation.)
QUESTION: What is the likelihood that the AmigaOS will be
released as open source?
ANSWER: At this time, it is not possible to give a straight
answer to this question. We are pursueing all avenues open
to us to make it happen.
QUESTION: I thought Gateway still owned the Amiga patents?
ANSWER: They do, and we are in negotiation with Gateway
already on this matter. We are hopeful that a positive
arrangement can be reached within the next few weeks.
QUESTION: Does Amiga Corporation support what you are doing?
ANSWER: We have their unofficial backing. It is not possible
for legal reasons for them to commit to open-source, since
many legal hurdles prevent them from doing this, most notably
the issue of Gateway's patents.
However, Fleecy Moss and Petro Tyschtschenko of Amiga have
both publicly stated their support for an open-source AmigaOS
in public interviews and forums.
QUESTION: If the AmigaOS is not released as open source,
what happens to AROS and Open Amiga?
ANSWER: We will continue. The source code is not a
necessity for us, but it would be a help.
The main issue for us is access to software patents and
various Amiga trademarks. Providing an adequate deal is
reached with Gateway for access to patents, and a deal
reached with Amiga for access to Amiga trademarks, we can
safely and legally develop a portable clone of Amiga OS.
The source code is unnecessary, but will help us develop
a portable clone of AmigaOS for other CPUs and platforms
in a shorter space of time.
QUESTION: Are you for or against what Amiga are doing re: Tao?
ANSWER: OAF/AROS does not take a position on other Amiga-related
projects including Amiga/Tao or Phoenix/QNX. We support the
right of Amiga users to make their own reasoned judgements
and to choose the solution that is bested suited for them.
We believe it is in the interests of the Amiga community
to be given maximum choice on the path they take, and in that
sense, we support Amiga's creation of a new alternative
option.
QUESTION: I am a developer. I would like to help. What
can I do?
ANSWER: Write to president@amigakernel.org and we will let you
know what groups are looking for more developers, and you will
be invited to join one of our active development teams.
Also bookmark http://www.openamiga.org. Our new, improved
website will be going online within the next few weeks.

New Report: MS - SQL access with PHP and Apache
A new report is available in our Report section that decribes the usage of
Apache and PHP to access MS - SQL Servers. It specifically decribes what
software is needed ans which steps need to be taken. With this solution it
is possible via a Linuxwebserver to use content, functions and databases of a
MS - SQL server. (German only, sorry!)

Answers to Phase5`s insolvancy
Several questions were raised by Phase5 digital products' application for insolvency, which we
have sent
by Fax to the provisional administrator of insolvency procceedings, Mrs. Angelika Amend on February 10, 2000.
At first the questions we have submitted:
Many users have sent in devices (CPU boards, etc.) to Phase 5 for
repair. Some of these under terms
of guarantee, but some also liable for costs. What can those users do to
get their boards back as soon as possible (repaired or not)?
Subject: Prepaiments for preordered G3/G4 boards.
If we are informed properly, prepayments were made against the background that those payments will
be effected to an account in trust. Such a statement was made by Phase 5 in the media back then to
make sure that the customers would get back their money, if those boards
would be never released (whatever the reason). Was the money of those customers actualy effected
to an account in trust, or are those payments possibly part of the insolvency procedure?
We have heard from several sources Phase 5 would consist of two companies. One a Ltd. (associates are not
known by me) and the other one an association of common law between Wolf Dietrich and Gerald Carda.
This brings up a question, which of these companies has made the application for insolvency. Unfortuantly,
one could not find out the form of the association from the letter on which the recieved press release
was written.
How will a user come to know if the insolvency proceedings have been disclosed, so that potentially aggrieved
people are able to log on their rights?
The reply, dated 02/15/2000
Today we recieved the following answers, which we mirror here word by word:

Insolvency proceedings for Phase 5 digital products
Dear Mrs. Petra Struck,
in response to your writing from 02/10/2000.
At present the users only can wait and see, if insolvency proceedings will be disclosed.
Because the suspended business activities there are currently no repairs made etc.
The users should solely denounce thier pretensions with the signatory. Up to now the
signatory does not know about an account in trust.
Insolvency proceedings are pending only for the acquirements of the association of common law,
existing of Wolf Dietrich and Gerald Carda. The users are creditors of the association, so they
will be informed about the disclosure of insolvency proceedings.
Sincerely yours
Angelika Amend

four new categories: Retailers, Internettools, Directories and Games. If anybody thinks his entry
should be in a different category now, he can use "Modify Entry" to change this. Please have

Amiga in Internet Magazin
In issue 3/2000 of the Internet Magazin the following answer to an readers letter can be found:
"It is correct that we are overall very focused on Windows. But in the past most of the
internet-surfers went online using this operating system. Since the use of MacOS, Linux
and even Amiga and Atari has multiplied this is changing curerntly. Therefore we will pay
more attention to these OSes in the future."

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
The year continues to be interesting, in both good and not so good
ways.
We have more information from Bill McEwen, President of the new
Amiga. What he has to say is positive and well worth reading. On the
other side of the coin, another long-time Amiga company dies. Phase 5
has been often controversial and sometimes disliked by many Amigans.
Despite that, they will be missed as any lessening of the community
hurts. We've already seen too many losses.
But even while one company goes away, another may be coming back.
There is a new web site for one of my old favorites, Cinemaware.
Efforts are being made to revive this maker of most interesting games.
Cinemaware was not just an Amiga company, so it will be worth keeping
an eye on them to see how the new company develops. You can find them
at www.cinemaware.com.
Speaking of renewal, we have a report below from Bill Griffin, the
person trying to establish a paper Amiga magazine for the US. Bill
hopes to fill the void left when "Amazing Computing" died recently. We
wish him luck, and will keep an eye on his efforts for our US readers.
There's another interesting magazine effort making progress. We
understand the "UGN Times" disk magazine has begun to show up at some
Amiga dealers' locations. We don't have an official list of who has
them and when others may get them. If interested, I guess you'll just
have to keep your eyes open.
There are many other things for you to read about in this issue. We
hope you enjoy it!

Editor

Dear Brad
The Amigaupdate is really the best way I can think of to get new
information about our beloved Amiga. A shame that I didn't find you
sooner.
My questions in all this talk about new platforms is:
Which computer should we actually buy. If I f. ex. buy the Amirage
from Phase5 will it be possible for me to use the virtual processor
made by Amino? And when they suddenly make a new platform too, the
Amiga community is in a way split in two? Or how do you see it all?
Or is a word like Amiga compatible the same as falling into the
PC-trap too?
Best regards,
Andreas

Wow, what questions! In all honesty, I don't think anyone can answer
these questions yet. We need to see what the new Amiga produces, and
the new Amiga (correctly, I think) won't say anything unless there's a
real product to talk about.
If you need something now, buy whatever product looks best to you at
this time. The future is unclear enough right now, I have no idea how
all these pieces will fit together. I'd like to ensure you that the
virtual processor will work on the Amirage, but I can't. My
expectation is that it will, but there are no quarantees.
I'm hoping we can avoid a split, but the possibility exists. I think
it's unlikely, as we're too small for any group that doesn't follow
the lead of Amiga to survive for long, and I think most people realize
that at some level.
For me, I'm planning on sticking with Amiga the company as long as it
produces something close to what I as want as an Amigan. That's just
my approach, but I think it's the most sensible one for those who can
wait.
Wish I had some real answers for your questions,
Brad

Brad,
Thanks for being one of the keepers of the flame, so to speak.
I have three things this message is about, two questions and one
soapbox sort of thing:
1. Question #1
Can you tell me about, point me to, give me advice on how to set up
my Linux machine to deal with Amiga-formatted floppies? I can find
info that indicates it can be done, but no instructions. I downloaded
a tarred file called amifdformat.tar.gz, but after unzipping and
tarring I get four files that I don't know what to do with, and I
suspect I need more files than this.
2. Part of the reason question #1 comes up is that even though I got
Amiga Forever and successfully hooked up to the Win98 part of my
laptop, I never could find out how to get files copied from the Amiga
to the laptop, or vice versa. Can you? I can access all the drives
without any problem.
<... intersting "soapbox thing" not included due to length ...>
Greg
~~~~~~
Greg,
First, I apologize for cutting so much interesting material from your
letter. I had to shorten it to include it. I read your thoughts about
Amiga and its need to have a customer orientation. Both Bill McEwen
and Fleecy Moss come from Gateway, and have had a good chance to learn
how not to treat customers, as well as how to do it right. I'm
expecting a much more customer oriented company from the new Amiga
than we were ever likely to get from Gateway.
While I'm a UNIX user in my other life, I'm not a Linux user so I'll
do as I often do and defer to the wisdom of our readers. I'm pretty
certain someone will have answers to both questions.
As for keeping the flame, we intend to stay at it as long as there's
even a flicker. Thanks,
Brad
Frank,
Yes, I'd agree that ANN is a good news site. It's a great place to
keep up with newsgroup postings. For general news, the other sites
might be more useful to more people.
February 4, 2000
Greetings to one and all:
A great deal has occurred over the last couple of weeks, and it is
only going to get more interesting as we move forward. It has been
some time since I spoke with you, and I wanted to share some of the
fun.
In the last two weeks we have announced our new foundation partner,
started technical training with our new development team, and had many
meetings with future technology partners
The responses have been overwhelmingly positive and, to quote an old
song "they ain't seen nothing yet".
On January 8, 2000 at CES in Las Vegas we announced our partnership
with the Tao-Group as our foundation OS partner. This is not just a
technical but a strategic relationship and brings with it great
rewards. I have asked Fleecy to write a short document highlighting
the Amiga/Tao relationship from a more technical perspective, to save
you from having to put up with my telling everyone how incredibly
great and fantastic it is. We want you to make your own minds up.
In the next two weeks we will make another strategic partnership
announcement with regards to the new path for Amiga. As with all our
announcements, look at it against the whole picture and not in
isolation.
After a week long trip to Germany and the UK I have come back with a
much better understanding of what we can and cannot do. As mentioned
before we are not going to make promises or product announcements. We
will announce to you, the community, only after the deal is signed or
the product is sitting before us. This won't put a stop to rumours,
but it will make them all the more obvious. Change brings uncertainty,
and in an information vacuum, mischief makers like to take the
spotlight. If it isn't officially sanctioned by Amiga, don't believe
it.
Our job as a company is to create exciting market opportunities for
Amiga developers to take advantage of, and to give Amiga users a
platform they can enjoy. This requires more than just an upgrade to
the existing OS. This requires, indeed demands a complete strategy
reaching into all areas of the present and the future. The time has
come for all of us to move forwards, owner, developer, and user.
Many of you have sent us business proposals, and product marketing
ideas, and for this we thank you, and ask for your patience as we look
over them. Some are providing us with valuable insight into the
desires of the Amiga community as a whole, others are providing us
with a good chuckle. This is the Amiga advantage that other platforms
just do not share.
Over the next few months there may be some companies that come out
with their own plans, or state that we do not have the community at
heart as we move forwards. The reality is, they do not know what we
have planned. In order to stay focused and to keep up our incredible
pace, we are not sharing our plans outside of our signed partnerships.
We have to prioritise and act singlemindedly if we are to reach our
first plateau in our given timescales. Once there we will be able to
pause for breath. Some are not happy about this, but they do not know
the full plan. Our mission is not just about restoring the Amiga, but
about pushing it forwards as THE technology for tomorrow.
This means that if you hear something annoying, or frustrating, or
downright nasty, and the source is not Amiga Inc, then disregard it.
Plain and simple.
If you did not hear it from us, or read it here on this web site it
is not true.
We are not asking for your trust or your undying belief. We only ask
that you take us on OUR words and deeds, not on the misinterpretations
of others.
We will soon be starting official meetings in Europe, the UK, and the
US for developers and dealers. This will include introductory training
seminars for the new OS, and introductions to the retail pricing and
schedules. We will also begin the process of introducing the new web
site, and putting the Amiga Advisory Council to work.
I want to thank each and every one of you for your hospitality during
our meetings and for your continued support as we move forwards. We
have had the chance to meet with many end users, developers, dealers,
and new partners, and look forwards to meeting even more of you as
time goes on.
There is a great deal of activity, with a lot of first footsteps on
some truly amazing paths. New partners excited, old faces returning,
familiar faces reminding us of our heritage. Indeed we are already
having to move into bigger facilities, such is our rate of growth.
I know it can be frustrating but after years wandering lost in a dark
place, the sun is finally starting to crack a smile on the horizon.
Together, we will march into tomorrow.
Keeping the faith,
Bill McEwen and the rest of the Amiga Team.
Fellow Amigans,
We are happy to assist the Gateway Amiga Club, Inc. in bringing you
Mr. Bill McEwen in...
"Live" from the Gateway Amgia Club"
GAC's meeting will be Wednesday March 1, at the Ladue Horton Watkins
High School Videio Lab. It is located at 1201 South Warson Rd, in
Ladue, MO. The meeting starts at 7:30 PM, with the conference starting
at 8 PM CST.
Mr McEwen will discuss the "OS for the 21st Century" and demonstrate
some "new stuff". This is a meeting you won't want to miss.
The interactive nature of this conference, will allow the speaker to
view his audience as they view him. Viewers can even ask questions
when their site is selected for viewing.
Amiga Clubs interested in viewing this live interactive video
conference" should go to GAC's web page at:
http://www.icon-stl.net/~amiga
and click on the "Amiga News" link. There you will find the details
of how to apply for the conferences link.
We suggest that clubs attempt to find video conferencing equipment at
their local high schools, colleges, or businesses to keep their costs
down. It is possible to rent Kinko equipment, but costs can be higher
than most clubs can afford.
Due to the video sites needing possible on-site approval, we will
need to have your request no later than February 14. Please remember
to fill out the form on the GAC website.
See you on the Big Screen,
Our project is progressing at quite a clip. Less than 24 hours after
my initial request for writers, I had 24 Emails of people wanting to
submit articles, 2 who wanted to help edit, 5 people who want
subscription info and 1 who simply want to know where to "send the
check".
I have since received Email from 2 more folks wanting to submit
articles. received 2 reviews and have heard from multiple potential
subscribers. I have had contact with 1 former "Amazing..." advertiser
who is helping me in setting up advertising contacts. And I am about
to send out advertising info to all the former "Amazing..."
advertisers (at least those who advertised in the last issue of
Amazing).
Now, we are going to be holding a "Name Our Magazine" contest with
the sample issue. In this contest, new subscribers will be able to
cast their votes for the name of the magazine. We will be including 3
possible names and a space for the subscriber to make their own choice
(in case they don't like ours). The planned end date for the contest
will be at the start of the second day of the St Louis Amiga Show
(April 1-2, 2000).
We have received several requests for info on the mag, so here it is.
We plan on a 30 - 40 page (plus covers) magazine. If there are any
REALLY important items that come up, we are prepared to push the
magazine out to about 50 pages (again plus covers). For the time
being, the magazine will be all black and white (or greyscale, if you
will) and will be printed on plain (non-slick) paper. This will
include the cover as well (at least for the first few issues).
Future plans include glossy paper and color. We've had a few
suggestions about adding cover disks or CDs. We're not really certain
if this is the way to go, so you will probably see a survey asking the
subscribers about this in the future.
The magazine ( again, at least, at the start) will be by subscription
only. I will be releasing, on the net (via the newsgroups and amiga
update) when the sample issues are ready to send out. At that point,
people can Email me with their "snail-,ail" addresses and I will mail
out the sample copies (no charge). Each sample issue will include a
subscription form, a vote card for the "Name Our Magazine" contest and
a shopper's survey (to help us know who to contact for possible future
advertising).
A "sneek peak" of the sample issue shows that we will have a review
of Digital Dreams action adventure game "Wasted Dreams". We will also
have the first of a 2-part review on the Albrecht Computer Technik
"Prelude" sound card. We are currently working out the details for an
interview with Amiga Inc's Fleecy Moss. And an article by A former
Amiga who is finding his way back to Amigas.
The planned kick-of date to send out samples is about March 15
(possibly sooner with a little luck). SO STAY TUNED.
AmiWest is in it's third year and is the only all Amiga show produced
on the West Coast. The show has proved very popular for Amiga
enthusiasts in the Western United States.
With the recent purchase of the Amiga by Amino (renamed Amiga
Corporation) from Gateway, the Amiga appears to be on an upswing. The
new Amiga Corporation is headed by Bill McEwen who can be remembered
by participants at both AmiWest'98 and AmiWest'99 as a very
enthusiastic supporter of the Amiga. Also part of the Amiga team are
long time Amigans Fleecy Moss and Petro Tyschtschenko.
It is with great pleasure that we announce that Mr. Bill McEwen,
President and CEO of Amiga Inc., will be our guest speaker at the
Amiga 2K banquet Saturday April 1, 2000. Bill is well know to most
Amiga fans as the former "Marketing Man" of Gateway's Amiga division.
Not to be one to be left out of the best computer in town, he
arranged to buy the company from his former bosses. That has to be a
feather in his cap. To be able to tell people that you so believe in a
product, that after you leave a company, you arrange to buy it, is
just admirable. I don't think they saw it coming, or they never would
have left Bill leave.
So are we in for an interesting tale, undoubtedly. Will we hear about
his ideas, I'm sure. Will we enjoy listening to the man who loves and
owns our beloved Amiga... You Betcha!
Ticketing arrangements are as follows:
Tickets to the Amiga 2K banquet are $35. They will only be sold in
advance, until March 18, 2000.
Admission tickets are $17 for two days - in advance.
or $12 for one day - in advance.
At the door, Admission tickets are $20 for two days.
or $15 for one day.
Class tickets are only available at the ticket table, during show
hours. A schedule of classes will be posted later.
Remember... Orders for tickets must be received no later than
March 18, 2000.
Please mail your requests to:
Amigan-St. Louis
Banquet tickets are sold on a first come basis. The last two years
we sold out, so don't wait too long.
All users of YAM, please note: a "patch" for YAM PPC appeared on
Aminet today (or maybe yesterday). It should cure a Y2K bug in YAM 2
(even though there isn't a Y2K bug in YAM at all) as well as make YAM
use the PPC.
Do not download and install this "patch"! The install script contains
a macro virus, and YAM doesn't get patched at all!
So, to repeat, the YAM patch now on Aminet is in fact a nasty VIRUS.
Don't use it!
Jan. 3, 2000 amiga-news.de now with Amiga Link Directory (ALD)
amiga-news.de opened the new Amiga Link Directory (ALD) for the
public on 23.1.2000. The new directory`s aim is to become THE
directory for AMIGA-pages. Innovative (http://www.innovative-web.de),
a software-company based in Herzogenaurach/Germany developed the
required technology for this exciting enterprise.
Entries are sorted by categories and letters or can be found easily
via the available search-function. In order to guarantee an always
up-to-date database, entries can be changed by the "owners" of the
entry at any time via a previously defined password. For every entry,
if provided by the "owner", further information is available. This can
include, but is not limited to the postal adress as well as the
phone-number, email-adress and homepage.
The ALD will also partially (means: only entries of "owners" who want
their entries to be part of a "directory" on the Aminet-CD) be
available via the popular Aminet-CDs. For the first time there will be
a bridge between the AMIGA-online and -offline-world - and it will be
called ALD. This way communication within the AMIGA-community will
improve and companies can also reach users, that don`t have an
internet-connection yet.
5th february 2000
The design of the Eriol control logic has progressed steadily during
January. Entering february the first fullscale test simulation of the
control logic is about to begin. Following this a shorter period for
correcting any logic errors must be expected. After having verified
the logical correctness of the control logic it will be time for a
fullscale timing simulation of the logic. Hopefully this will prove
what I already believe - that the timing of the control logic will
hold.
However, the Eriol project has also run into some trouble, which may
delay the project. The entire Eriol control logic is to be put into an
FPGA logic chip. The size of the logic asks for an FPGA of some
logical capacity. Unfortunately the development system that I have
access to cannot cope with such big FPGA designs, as it is not a full
development system, but rather a smaller (and cheaper) version. Three
solutions exist and are under evaluation. The first is to get hold of
a full development system. This will most likely be very expensive and
I don't think I can convince the University that it has to pay up
(unfortunately). The second solution is to break the design into two
separate and smaller FPGA chips. This will give access to enough logic
space to allow an implementation. However, it will give more delay in
the hardware as signals has to pass in and out of the FPGAs, and be a
lot more expensive due to the extra FPGA. The third solution is to
find another logic device for which the University has a development
system which can handle the big design.
Currently the solution being worked on is the second. I'm now working
on logically splitting the logic into two FPGAs. Together with this a
redesign of parts of the logic will take place as to minimize the
number of signals having to go from one chip to the other.
Unfortunately this use of two FPGAs will put just about an extra £20
on the production price :( The final product price is still
undefined...
The first prototype board, first expected at the end of february,
will without doubt be delayed from the afore mentioned problems. When
the first prototype board will exist is now an open question, but the
delay should be no more than a month.
Yours sincerely
High Performance Digital Audio Decoder
Introduction
The Storm MP3/e is an MPEG audio decoder specifically designed to
allow machines that dont have the power to play MPEG files to do so.
The unit incoroprates state of the art components and many features
not available in a unit of this price. Storm MP3/e allows a standard
Amiga 500, PC80286 or Archimedies to play MP3 files with ease. The
unit is compatible with any system fitted with a parralell printer
port and is supplied with drivers for PC and Amiga use. Archimedies
drivers will be available shortly after release if the demand is
there.
Connections
The Storm MP3/e provides three user connections. Two 3.5MM jacks
provide Audio output and a pass-thru connector for the host machines
existing audio (if fitted). The output of the storm is low level
although an optional amplifier unit will be available. Internally the
unit has two high speed expantion ports allowing for future modules
such as radio tuners and on board storage. A third internal header and
a masked lens on the top of the unit make the Storm MP3/e infra-red
ready. The unit is powered by either it's internal PP3 9V battery or a
mains supply (available seperately) The MP£ powers up and down
automatically along with the host system, the internal electronics
also support a 'suspend' mode. In this mode one standard Alkaline
battery should last for about a month. Drivers are provided that
enable Win95 to utilise this feature as if it were part of a laptop's
own system.
Software
Storm MP3/e is supplied with software for both PC and Amiga. The
Amiga software includes a low-level library, programming information,
an MP3 player and diagnostics program. PC wise both DOS and Windows
95/98 software is supplied, again drivers, diagnostics and driver
software. No drivers are available for the Archimedies but development
information is available to anyone who wants to write software.
Software is supplied on ISO 9660 format CD and two floppies, one for PC and
one for Amiga.
In Action
The prototype units are nearing completion and will be dispatched to
various developers and testers shortly. Below are a few shots of the
unit, unfortunately the quality of these pictures is rather poor and
they'll be replaced as soon as possible.
Due to the great demand, we have decided to develop a demoversion of
P H O T O F O L I O F R O M S T E E P L E S O F T W A R E
Steeple Software is proud to announce the first commercial release of
PhotoFolio v2.0 in conjunction with Schatztruhe.
PhotoFolio v2.0 is a major step forward from it's predecessor version
1.2 with many new features including:
* ARexx
A fully documented ARexx port for those of you who like to automate
tasks using ARexx scripts. These scripts are made available through
pull down menus and toolbay buttons and can be pre-configured in the
settings window.
* Drag 'n' Drop proofs
Dragging and dropping of proofs is now supported (by popular
demand!). You can drag and drop:
- Between browse windows.
- Onto a path in the main window's listtree.
- Onto a Show window.
- Onto the information window.
* Workbench Icon Support
Workbench icons can be dropped:
- Onto a browse window
- Onto the listtree in the main window.
* Toolbays
Both the main and browse windows now have toolbays (optionally, of
course!) making navigating around PhotoFolio v2.0 faster and easier.
Those of you who don't like using context menus.... this is for you!
* CLI support
You can launch PhotoFolio v2.0 from a shell, passing in paths. Each
path passed in will automatically be added to the main window's
listtree and then opened into a browse window.
* Listtree Tree mode
The listtree in the main window can now be operated in the current
"flat mode" or as a proper directory tree structure in "tree mode".
* Native IFF-ILBM loading
Imageio.library has been re-written to support IFF-ILBM. This means
there is a dramatic increase in speed when loading IFF-ILBM files.
* Amiga DOS pattern matching
Selecting proofs has never been easier. Using the in-built Amiga DOS
pattern matching system, proofs can now be selected using wildcards
etc.
* Saving of images as JPegs
Images can now be converted to jpegs directly within PhotoFolio v2.0.
* Settings
The setting window has been totally re-designed and re-written making
sure your prefs file is completely compatabile with future versions of
PhotoFolio.
* Unsaved proof indication
For those of you who run without any text description below the
proofs, knowing which proofs are saved and which aren't is a problem.
Now, a red box is (optionally) drawn in the bottom right hand corner
of un-saved proofs.
* Constant size proofs
Proofs can now be displayed at a constant size, making the
distribution of proofs in the browse window even.
There has also been several minor improvements and additions, and
many bug fixes from version 1.2 making it more stable and flexible.
These new options coupled with the the existing features of
PhotoFolio make it a formidable image cataloguing system for both the
amateur and professional user alike. With continuing support,
PhotoFolio promises to be one of the most powerful image cataloguing
systems available on the Amiga platform.
PhotoFolio v2.0 is planned to be released in early to mid February.
Price has yet to be decided, however users who have paid the shareware
fee will receive a discount on the retail price.
YourName@Workben.Ch
After some Amigans had registered with us, I decided to develop the whole affair further! For the moment
not only domain suffixes AMIGATOOLS.NET and AMIGAWEB.NU but also the real cool suffix Workben.Ch is
available for free email-accounts (POP and SMTP) and free subdomain. On unlimited Webspace and
email-adresses, following subdomains will be available from tomorrow on:
microserv.org - intermail.nu - amigatools.net - amigaweb.nu - microserv.nu - workben.ch - niveau.nu -
webcamhost.nu - internetv.nu - piratensender.nu - spacemail.nu - A0L.nu - t-offline.nu
If someone has a good idea for using those names in a software, he may immediately use one of
theses names as a subdomain. If someone can convince me that he can manage to write a state-of-the-art
top-quality software and that he works on it with all his heart, I would be enclined to provide a free
Top-Level-Domain for this software. Simply send me those ideas (http://www.intermail.nu) or call our
hotline. Ok folks, if there has ever been a chance to start a really big project on the internet, this is it.
GRAB IT! With our 2500 to 3000 pageviews a day there are certainly enough posiibilities for everyone.
Petro Tyschtschenko by eMail and Fax
|
Die Telebörse: What about..? AMIGA
On page 154 in the magazine "Die Telebörse" edited by the Handelsblatt
there is a complete article about AMIGA. Here a few exerpts:
"No other computer has been said dead this often and yet been resurrected as the Amiga. This is not only
due to the technology but also to a committed community of fans."
"Would there be an award for the "comeback champion computer business" - Amiga would own a whole shelf
of those by itself. The trademark has survived two insolvencies, it has switched its owner four times
and nevertheless 5 billion computer have been sold until now. Chaos is the second name of this computer
which has only survived because there were always people who believed in Amiga."
Then follows the history of the Amiga until the insolvency of Commodore.
"The fate of Amiga seemed sealed but then a certain Petro Tyschtschenko stepped in. Commodores former
logistics-manager talked the german trading company Escom into taking over the dead trademark. Amiga
switched its owner in 1995 but still had a problem. The stocks had been dissolved by the official
receivers. It was end of may and Escom desperately needed computers for christmas time. Once again it
was Petro Tyschtschenko who saved the day. He found a nearly forgotten hangar in the philippines, where
parts had been hoarded. Tyschtschenko managed to talk the creditors into handing those stocks over to
him. After that, three philipinos sat out in the monsum rain sorting parts for about four months. In
september 1995 one could once again buy Amigas in germany."
Then follows one more odyssey for the Amiga.
"In the late summer of 1999 Collas left. His plans where frozen and Gateway sold the trademark Amiga to
a start-up-company, Amino-Development. Its managers want to continue the work on which Gateway gave up
and develop new hardware. One thing is clear: As long as the Amiga-community and Petro Tyschtschenko
exist, the trademark will survive."
IOM temporarly unavailable
I want to announce that the provider of the IOM Film- and Videoproduction company, the Prokscha & Prokscha
replacement following e-mail adresses should be used:
I would like to use this occasion to thank the Netminds GbR company from Rehau who proposed us fast and
I think this should be mentionned ;-). I hope we can get the domain back online as fast as possible.
Thomas Dellert by e-mail
Interview with Thomas Dellert of DCE
As DCE has bought the licences for many products of Phase 5,
we have asked Thomas Dellert a couple of questions:
Interview in German
Translator: Martina Jacobs
amiga news:
Many users worry about how and if Phase5 products will still
be available. As to our knowledge DCE allready obtained a number of licences from Phase5
some time ago. How about this in detail?
Thomas Dellert:
DCE owns exclusive rights on the following Phase5 products:
- Blizzard 1240
- Blizzard 1260
- Blizzard 2040
- Blizzard 2060
- Blizzard SCSI IV Kit
- CV 64 3D
- CV PPC
- B-Vision
- Cyberstorm MK III
- Cyberstorm PPC
- Blizzard PPC
Pos. 1-6 are allready availabel again.
Cyberstorm MK III and PPC will be shipping within the 8th week of this year.
Blizzard PPC after about 7 weeks.
BVison and CV PPC about today fortnight.
Distribution will be done by Vesalia Computer.
amiga news:
These are excellent news! Will DCE take over repaire services for those products, too?
Thomas Dellert:
DCE will take over repair services for those products. So, owners of elder boards don't
have to worry about that.
amiga news:
Will the licences and the availability of Phase5 products be impaired or even endangered
by Phase5's application for insolvency?
Thomas Dellert:
We've obtained exclusive rights for these products in April 1999 allready.
We are not paying any licence fee to P5. Rather than this we obtained the licences by a single
payment. There are unobjectionable contracts. The availability of the products is secure.
amiga news:
Will there be further software updates relating phase5 products? Are you allready in contact
about this with Ralph Schmitdt?
Thomas Dellert:
A good and very important question, Petra. Yes, I had a meeting with Ralph Schmidt and Frank
Mariak two days ago. We have come to terms that in the future we will cooperate very close.
There will be a FTP server on oure homepage, where device updates will be found for download.
amiga-news.de:
Are there any plans for new developments based upon Phase5's products?
Thomas Dellert:
For sure existing hardware will be produced at first. There are a lot of preorders. Since Permedia II chips
have been announced by TI, we probable will be able to produce only a number of 1200 BVision or
CV-PPC boards. Hence we are thinking about a Permedia III board for Amiga. This might be mounted
upon the existing BVision or CV-PPC platform. Frank Mariak will develope the software for us.
With the entire amount of technical know-how of Phase5 we now have a powerful package at our disposal.
In any case there will be activities relating PPC. For the time being as a dual CPU resolution only.
amiga-news.de:
In particular: Will there be a Phase5 G4 board from DCE, and will there be pay regard to prepayments
Phase5 allready recieved relating those boards? Or will there be hardware at cheaper prices, similar
to Stefan Ossowski's Schatztruhe offering to all those Euromail harmed people AminetCDs at a price of
DM 5 or bricks?
Thomas Dellert:
Relating that I allready met with Wolf Dietrich. Indeed at this time I cannot tell, if we will
decide for a G4 project.
amiga-news.de:
Do DCE have access to hardware of Phase5' customers, which lies at Phase5's for repair at this time?
Thomas Dellert:
No, we haven't.
amiga-news.de:
Thomas, thank you very much for your informativ answers. We are pacifyed and pleased that production will
contiue, and that customers who have Phase5 products will be able to take up a competent service for
repair at DCE.
The Aminet-GUI is now also available in English. This is possible by using an online translator.
Upon calling the Aminet-GUI, the German or English version can be selected on the intro screen.
More languages are planned for the future. If you know good online translators from German or
AROS: Menues are now working
The code for the menues has been inserted. Different than on the original
Amiga, tasks are handled as a task that contains all input-events as long
as the right mouse button is pressed. For this reason the menues will not
block other tasks, and are easily improved upon. If blocking menues are
still a problem then they ccan be controlled by by each program
individually by checking for RMB down/up.
In other words the AROS-Menues work better than the original Amiga OS
menues.
Executive Update (Update)
The Executive Update of February 3rd has been reworked at several points. Basically, the wording has been
redone, and the following paragraph has been added:
"We will soon be starting official meetings in Europe, the UK, and the US for developers and dealers. This will include
introductory training seminars for the new OS, and introductions to the retail pricing and schedules. We will also begin
the process of introducing the new web site, and putting the Amiga Advisory Council to work."
Here's a copy of the most recent version:
"February 4, 2000
Greetings to one and all:
A great deal has occurred over the last couple of weeks, and it is only going to get more interesting as we move forward. It has been some time since I spoke with you, and I wanted to share some of the fun.
In the last two weeks we have announced our new foundation partner, started technical training with our new development team, and had many meetings with future technology partners
The responses have been overwhelmingly positive and, to quote an old song "they ain't seen nothing yet".
On January 8, 2000 at CES in Las Vegas we announced our partnership with the Tao-Group as our foundation OS partner. This is not just a technical but a strategic relationship and brings with it great rewards. I have asked Fleecy to write a short document highlighting the Amiga/Tao relationship from a more technical perspective, to save you from having to put up with my telling everyone how incredibly great and fantastic it is. We want you to make your own minds up.
In the next two weeks we will make another strategic partnership announcement with regards to the new path for Amiga. As with all our announcements, look at it against the whole picture and not in isolation.
After a week long trip to Germany and the UK I have come back with a much better understanding of what we can and cannot do. As mentioned before we are not going to make promises or product announcements. We will announce to you, the community, only after the deal is signed or the product is sitting before us. This won't put a stop to rumours, but it will make them all the more obvious. Change brings uncertainty, and in an information vacuum, mischief makers like to take the spotlight. If it isn't officially sanctioned by Amiga, don't believe it.
Our job as a company is to create exciting market opportunities for Amiga developers to take advantage of, and to give Amiga users a platform they can enjoy. This requires more than just an upgrade to the existing OS. This requires, indeed demands a complete strategy reaching into all areas of the present and the future. The time has come for all of us to move forwards, owner, developer, and user.
Many of you have sent us business proposals, and product marketing ideas, and for this we thank you, and ask for your patience as we look over them. Some are providing us with valuable insight into the desires of the Amiga community as a whole, others are providing us with a good chuckle. This is the Amiga advantage that other platforms just do not share.
Over the next few months there may be some companies that come out with their own plans, or state that we do not have the community at heart as we move forwards. The reality is, they do not know what we have planned. In order to stay focused and to keep up our incredible pace, we are not sharing our plans outside of our signed partnerships.
We have to prioritise and act singlemindedly if we are to reach our first plateau in our given timescales. Once there we will be able to pause for breath. Some are not happy about this, but they do not know the full plan. Our mission is not just about restoring the Amiga, but about pushing it forwards as THE technology for tomorrow.
This means that if you hear something annoying, or frustrating, or downright nasty, and the source is not Amiga Inc, then disregard it.
Plain and simple.
If you did not hear it from us, or read it here on this web site it is not true.
We are not asking for your trust or your undying belief. We only ask that you take us on OUR words and deeds, not on the misinterpretations of others.
We will soon be starting official meetings in Europe, the UK, and the US for developers and dealers. This will include introductory training seminars for the new OS, and introductions to the retail pricing and schedules. We will also begin the process of introducing the new web site, and putting the Amiga Advisory Council to work.
I want to thank each and every one of you for your hospitality during our meetings and for your continued support as we move forwards. We have had the chance to meet with many end users, developers, dealers, and new partners, and look forwards to meeting even more of you as time goes on.
There is a great deal of activity, with a lot of first footsteps on some truly amazing paths. New partners excited, old faces returning, familiar faces reminding us of our heritage. Indeed we are already having to move into bigger facilities, such is our rate of growth.
I know it can be frustrating but after years wandering lost in a dark place, the sun is finally starting to crack a smile on the horizon. Together, we will march into tomorrow.
Keeping the faith,
Bill McEwen and the rest of the Amiga Team."
February 4, 2000
Fellow Amigans,
We are happy to assist the Gateway Amiga Club, Inc. in bringing
you Mr. Bill McEwen in...
GAC's meeting will be Wednesday March 1, at the Ladue Horton Watkins
High School Videio Lab. It is located at 1201 South Warson Rd, in
Ladue, MO. The meeting starts at 7:30 PM, with the conference
starting at 8 PM CST.
Mr McEwen will discuss the "OS for the 21st Century" and
demonstrate some "new stuff". This is a meeting you won't want
The interactive nature of this conference, will allow the speaker to
view his audience as they view him. Viewers can even ask questions
when their site is selected for viewing.
conference" should go to GAC's web page at:
http://www.icon-stl.net/~amiga
but costs can be higher than most clubs can afford.
Due to the video sites needing possible on-site approval, we will
need to have your request no later than February 14. Please
remember to fill out the form on the GAC website.
Due to the big demand, we decided to develop a demo version of fxPAINT. You can download the
result now. The demo version offers almost all the functionality of the full version, except
for those functions allowing to save or print a graphics. The PPC support is untouched by
these limitations. Download: fxPAINTDemo.lha
RC - RUNCOACH, the runner trainer for Amiga
Finally, there is an Amiga training program for runners available. It calculates detailed
training suggestions to prepare for contests. After entering personal data, like weight,
pulse etc., a training plan with differing demand until contest day is calculated.
The program is a C port of the well-known Runcoach
by Paul Shields. He was so kind to supply me with the Prolog source code. After some effort,
I was able to get Eric Engdahl to make the Amiga port. I would like comments and expansion
requests, so RC will get many users. The program can be found on Aminet.
VillageTronic answers :-)
On February 3rd, the German main page of amiga-news.de
reported that, with a change in layout on the VT website, visitors get the impression that the
Amiga area is now only secondary for VT. Yesterday, Village Tronic spoke out about the ParaGlide
project. Since no excellent hard- and software engineer could be found in 1999, and ParaGlide was
not on top of the priority list, VT concentrated on other projects. ParaGlide has not been
cancelled, however, since the developers from the Amiga section would not have it.
Village Tronic is now looking for a ParaGlide fan who is an experienced PCB layouter, using
the Protel Layout System. Candidates please contact amigasupport@village.de.
amiga-news.de now with Amiga Link Directory (ALD)
amiga-news.de opened the new Amiga Link Directory (ALD) for the public on 23.1.2000.
The new directory`s aim is to become THE directory for AMIGA-pages.
Innovative, a software-company based in
Herzogenaurach/Germany developed the required technology for this exciting enterprise.
Entries are sorted by categories and letters or can be found easily via the available
search-function. In order to guarantee an always up-to-date database, entries can be
changed by the "owners" of the entry at any time via a previously defined password.
For every entry, if provided by the "owner", further information is available. This
can include, but is not limited to the postal adress as well as the phone-number,
email-adress and homepage.
The ALD will also partially be available via the popular Aminet-CDs (means: only entries
of "owners" who want their entries to be part of a "directory" on the Aminet-CD).
For the first time there will be a bridge between the AMIGA-online and -offline-world -
and it will be called ALD. This way communication within the AMIGA-community will
improve and companies can also reach users, that don`t have an internet-connection yet.
Help us building the greatest online-directory for AMIGA-websites worldwide and
add your website today.
The ALD can be found at: www.amiga-news.de/cgi-bin/anwd-db.pl
AppleInsider: Outlook for Faster G4 Systems Appear Gloomy
Obviously, difficulties with the G4 CPU layout resulted in a very poor yield in G4 CPUs
with more than 450 MHz (one or two per wafer). The situation will probably not change until
late fall, when new CPU versions (of the G4, not the successor G5!) will be released. Until
then, the G3 is the only PowerPC exceeding 500 MHz clock speed.
Executive Update by Bill McEwen
Amiga's Bill McEwen has posted an Executive Update:
"Greetings to one and all:
A great deal has occurred over the last couple of weeks, and it is only going to get more interesting as we move forward. It has been some time since I spoke with you, and I wanted to share some of the fun.
In the last two weeks we have announced our new foundation partner, started technical training with our new development team, and had many meetings with future technology partners
The responses have been overwhelmingly positive and, to quote an old song "they ain't seen nothing yet".
On January 8, 2000 at CES in Las Vegas we announced our partnership with the Tao-Group as our foundation OS partner. This is not just a technical but a strategic relationship and brings with it great rewards. I have asked Fleecy to write a short document highlighting the Amiga/Tao relationship from a more technical perspective, to save you from having to put up with my telling everyone how incredibly great and fantastic it is. We want you to make your own minds up.
In the next two weeks we will make another strategic partnership announcement with regards to the new path for Amiga. As with all our announcements, look at it against the whole picture and not in isolation.
After a week long trip to Germany and the UK I have come back with a much better understanding of what we can and cannot do. As mentioned before we are not going to make promises or product announcements. We will announce to you, the community, only after the deal is signed or the product is sitting before us. This won't put a stop to rumours, but it will make them all the more obvious. Change brings uncertainty, and in an information vacuum, mischief makers like to take the spotlight. If it isn't officially sanctioned by Amiga, don't believe it.
Our job as a company is to create exciting market opportunities for Amiga developers to take advantage of, and to give Amiga users a platform they can enjoy. This requires more than just an upgrade to the existing OS. This requires, indeed demands a complete strategy reaching into all areas of the present and the future. The time has come for all of us to move forwards, owner, developer, and user.
Many of you have sent us business proposals, and product marketing ideas, and for this we thank you, and ask for your patience as we look over them. Some are providing us with valuable insight into the desires of the Amiga community as a whole, others are providing us with a good chuckle. This is the Amiga advantage that other platforms just do not share.
Over the next few months there may be some companies that come out with their own plans, or state that we do not have the community at heart as we move forwards. The reality is, they do not know what we have planned. In order to stay focused and to keep up our incredible pace, we are not sharing our plans outside of our signed partnerships.
We have to prioritise and act singlemindedly if we are to reach our first plateau in our given timescales. Once there we will be able to pause for breath. Some are not happy about this, but they do not know the full plan. Our mission is not just about restoring the Amiga, but about pushing it forwards as THE technology for tomorrow.
This means that if you hear something annoying, or frustrating, or downright nasty, and the source is not Amiga Inc, then disregard it.
Plain and simple.
If you did not hear it from us, or read it here on this web site it is not true.
We are not asking for your trust or your undying belief. We only ask that you take us on OUR words and deeds, not on the misinterpretations of others.
We will soon be starting official meetings in Europe, the UK, and the US for developers and dealers. This will include introductory training seminars for the new OS, and introductions to the retail pricing and schedules. We will also begin the process of introducing the new web site, and putting the Amiga Advisory Council to work.
I want to thank each and every one of you for your hospitality during our meetings and for your continued support as we move forwards. We have had the chance to meet with many end users, developers, dealers, and new partners, and look forwards to meeting even more of you as time goes on.
There is a great deal of activity, with a lot of first footsteps on some truly amazing paths. New partners excited, old faces returning, familiar faces reminding us of our heritage. Indeed we are already having to move into bigger facilities, such is our rate of growth.
I know it can be frustrating but after years wandering lost in a dark place, the sun is finally starting to crack a smile on the horizon. Together, we will march into tomorrow.
Keeping the faith,
Bill McEwen and the rest of the Amiga Team."
AmiTech Dayton Amiga Users Group Project for the A2K Show
An offer to put your advertising in the AmiTech newsletter, which will be handed out for free
to every visitor of the A2K Show, North America's largest Amiga show:
Amitech Dayton Amiga Users Group Announces Advertising Opportunity
With the demise of so many outlets for Amiga vendors and distributors to advertise in
these days it has become very difficult for those still supporting the Amiga to get the word
out that they are still around. We at AmiTech would like to invite you to advertise in our
March Special Show Edition Newsletter which will be distributed free to all attendees at the
A2K Amiga Show in St.Louis. This show has attendance in excess of 1100 people and is the
largest Amiga show in North America. This is a great chance to let people know about your
business, services and show specials.
Take a look at our advertising rates. As you can see they are more than reasonable:
All rates based on 8.5 x 11 page size: Full Page - $16.00
Half Page - $10.00
Black and white text/art only Quarter Page - $7.00
Business Card - $4.00
All prices based on US dollars
For more details please contact:
Eric Schwartz - erics@coax.com (Newsletter editor)
or
Len Carsner - nard@erinet.com (Secretary/Treasurer)
All advertising must be to us no later than MARCH 5 to give us time to layout the
pages. All ads must be paid in advance to be included. Make checks/moneyorders payable to:
Len Carsner/AmiTech AmiTech User Group
905 Boone Street OR P.O. Box 292684
Piqua, Ohio 45356-1815 Kettering, Ohio 45429-0684
Now is the time to act! The Amiga appears ready to make the comeback we've all hoped for.
Make sure the people out there know who you are! If you can't make the show this a great
way to spread your name around. If you are going to St. Louis, putting an ad in the
newsletter is a terrific way to insure that those who attend know you are there and to call
attention to your show specials.
Over 1100 people were at last years show. A lot of money was spent on Amiga items
of all kinds. Wouldn't you like to share in the fun and camaraderie that is an Amiga show,
and get the attention your business deserves? Contact us today!
Thank You
The free program runs on Amigas with AmigaOS v3.x, 1 MB RAM, Internet connection and the Open
Marco Frischkorn writes:
I am missing some maps for a new DataDisk. Mainly one-player maps. If somebody has some of those
If someone has maps for the DataDisk 1 (desert / winter), I would be happy about them, too,
even while there are only one third of the needed maps are present right now.
Please send maps to marco_frischkorn@amigadev.de.
When possible write some lines in addition to the map, like sollutions, backgrounds, about the
person, and that you aggree in distribution on an extra DataDisk. The maps are throughoutly tested
by myself and two friends. As soon as the DataDisk 3 is ready, everyone will recieve it automatically.
LightForce
Bad news on LightForce by StrangeWorlds: On this weekend, the A4000 of
Andreas Hippauf suffered a complete failure of the development partition.
The development environments for LightForce, and the e-mail client YAM had
to be reinstalled completely. Thanks to frequent backups, the sources were
undamaged.
But the emails of (the) last month(s?) have been lost. If
somebody has ordered the latest demo version and did not yet recieve it,
please contact Andreas Hippauf
been decided to send out new demo versions only to interested users on
request. The latest demo, by the way, already shows the usage of textures
and extras, so it is well worth a look.
AminetGUI Update
After some time, I did some work on the Aminet-GUI again. This is mostly small bugfixes. Frames
should now be displayed without disturbing borders on non-Amiga browsers, too. You can now switch
directly from the tree structure to forum and guestbook. The link area has also been updated, adding
some new links. In the future it will be possible to add your own links. The implementation of this
functionality is still being worked upon, however. I added some auction and exchange websites to the
interactive area. I am planning to add my own exchange area, but I am right now still looking for
a suitable provider for such services. If someone knows a good provider, or has experience in CGI
prgramming, please contact me.
Due to a hard drive crash with PFS-2, it will take some time until the next large update, since I
have to completely rebuild my system. This can take some time since I have the majority of my programs
from the Internet. On this occassion I can only advice you not to use PFS-2. It was the second crash
I experienced. On the first crash I almost lost my complete web partition. The second crash took my
dh0: drive down. So I will switch my system to SFS. The introduction of the new directory design will
be delayed for said reasons, I am sorry. But I hope it won't be too long.
Problem with diskcopy v44.5
Andi of Future Visions writes:
The diskcopy included in OS3.5 (System drawer) is unable to correctly read and copy partitions
over the 4GB barrier. If this is true for writing I have not yet tested, but I don't think it
will work.
If now there is an error on a partition over the 4GB barrier, like the root directory defective
due to a crash during writing, and the partition cannot be accessed by the normal file system,
a normal user is unable to rescue his data. Tools like Disksalv are unable to access these
partitions, and there is no FFS64-compatible "diskcopy" program on Aminet to copy the defective
partition to the lower 4GB and use Disksalv on it there. So I urgently recommend
not to hold important data on such partitions, since a recovery will be impossible. OS3.5 support
has been notified.
the rights, they were now sold to a company named Amino Development, according to a GNN report
led by two former Amiga executives. Also according to GNN, Amiga users judge this as a chance
for an Amiga comeback, possibly as Open Source."
News from the APUS frontline
The Sunsite server has already seen several new things this year!
For one, there is a new Bootstrap released, and additionally an archive for the Bootstrap
with autodetect for WarpOS/PowerUp. Download:
ftp://sunsite.auc.dk/projects/apus/boothack.
There is a brand-new, very good Installer for LinuxPPC5. Download:
ftp://sunsite.auc.dk/prrojects/apus/install/redhat.
On Olliweb (title link), at CDSUPPORT, there is an archive with Installer and ready-made scripts
for updating older LinuxPPC5-CDs from olliweb, which should run with all other linuxPPC5 versions.
At Linux.de there is a link to a PowerMac emulator for LinuxPPC5.
In the manual it says that, with the right kernel patches (included), the PowerMac emulator should
also run on Amigas with LinuxPPC5! Needed, among others: MacOS8.6 + romfile.
Heise: PC Manufacturers: New Concepts Wanted
"A basic rule of the technological society seems to win again: Innovative ideas and
products recieve high acceptance and earn big profits. Holding tight to traditional
concepts, on the other hand, leads directly to economical desaster. Not only the manufacturers
of the C64, which was leading the way in it's time, had to learn this, when Commodore had
to give up all hope for rescue in 1994. In the 90ies of the last millenium, when the Intel x86
based PC-architecture had made it's way for quite some time, users no longer wanted Commodore's
products without hard drive - attempts to gain a foothold again with the Amiga came too late."
What's all the fuzz about pirate copies?
This text shall and must be widely known. However, the author
doesn't want to start petty wars with all hacker groups at once.
For this reason the author asked to have the text published
ANONYMOUS! As the author is known to us, we accept this
exceptionally, if only for the reason that we want to help
sensitizing all parties involved for this subject, and give food
for thought.
Copies have been sent to: AMIGA.de, Haage &
Partner, Vapor, Holger Kruse, and Andreas Kleinert.
«Maybe some people have wondered what the article of Andreas
Kleinert was all about. There have been pirate copies all the time, so
why so much fuzz about them? Because it's a matter of survival!
Not every maker of software has the financial resources of a
company with windows :-) Furthermore, in the recent couple of
days, it wasn't about some small web site with 2 - 5 pirate copies.
Last friday Andreas was informed about an FTP server whose
directory structure contains round about 1500 lines, each line
representing one pirate copy.
Whenever he puts an update
into AmiNet, it takes only 2 days for the cracked version to
emerge. In addition there are cracking programs for personal use,
and key generators. If I just estimate 10 copies with a value of
10 Marks for each entry of this server, we would be at 150,000.-
DM. But the damage caused may be estimated much higher. And this
is no computer for Win95/98, with a little Amiga on the side.
This is AMIGA with a little MAC on the side! What do you need
that isn't available for free in AmiNet? What more is needed than
FULLY USABLE trial versions? All in vain? It does look that way.
But in vain is not bargain priced or free. In vain are the
efforts of a maker who doesn't make a turnover anymore. Pirate copies
of OS 3.5 (who copies CD ROMs via modem)???
There are
various roads to the future: the cheap one, that one C= has shown
us already, haven't they? The unified, new windows every two
years? Or one that stays affordable, and where together you can
feel as a community. Where you show STRENGTH in doing without
some things, and buying the product with support. I won't
denounce anyone because he uses a pirated copy from time to time.
Everyone has to make that out with himself. And I won't reproach
a HACKER who overcomes a complicated security system. But taking
away the small earnings for in part excellent programs from every
little shareware author, and intimidating the last companies that
have enabled us to hold out until today, that's unfair and has
nothing to do with a sporting hack. That's just ciminal! And who
thinks there aren't any clever heads on the side of those
concerned may anticipate getting a fitting answer some day.
In the appendix [may be ordered if needed] of this mail
I publish the contents of the FTP server. The people who run it
should know that we already know now who they are and not only
since today. They had their fun and should quit, because too much
fun often isn't good for you.
Just a quick word to the
aggrieved companies and programmers: Don't take this as a reason
for negative thinking and mourning of losses, but as a sign that
the support of the usership still lives and will keep on living.
Because the users need you as makers like you need them as
customers. If concerned software makers answer in need of data,
they will get them. Furthermore it would surely be helpful to
place the text on Anti Piracy after translation and leave it
there.»
Phantasmagoria is comming!
Alive Mediasoft will port Phantasmagoria to the Amiga! The game is an adventure playing in a scary
atmosphere. Citing the PC version game manual:
"PRAY THAT THIS IS ONLY A NIGHTMARE! The story began so harmlessly for Adrienne. A loving husband,
a nice new home - what else to wish for. That a demon is released by her fault, well, such things happen.
That it is her husband is posessed by this demon, that her new home was once owned by a mad show magician
who brutally murdered all his wives here turns into a real problem for Adrienne..."
Again, this text is re-translated.
IT-SalesWeek article: Amiga (!), QNX, Transmeta
Erik Zühlke writes: The IT-SalesWeek reports about the Amiga again, even a full page this time
(p.10) "Comeback to a unsure future between MS and Apple". The article begins with "seldom has a
platform won so stubborn :) users. For sure Apple users are already special, but the Amiga community
is... just that bit more extravagant" :)). It continues with a rough overview (including picture) of
the Amiga's live until sold to Amino. It closes with "...things look better than 8 weeks before for the
Amiga, and the OS is ranked 2nd at the VaporAwards directly behind Windows 2000".
Among others, "misterWEB" by Charisma was pictured, an Internet device in form of a 25% tipped,
touch-flatscreen including QNX Photon MCkernel. There are ports for adding printer, keyboard, USB,
and it comes with fixed ISP. Just by the way...
I don't have an issue of the IT-SalesWeek handy. The cited text has been re-translated and will
differ from the original, but I think the meaning of the words was untouched. If somebody has the
IT-SalesWeek article and a scanner handy, I would like you getting into
contact with me and mail me a scan... (mb)
