Multimedia authoring system: Hollywood available
Andreas Falkenhahn wrote:
Finally! After a long time of development, the Multimedia authoring system Hollywood
is available. Hollywood is a powerful and extensive program which is unique on the
Amiga. You could compare Hollywood with a modern version of Scala: But Hollywood works
fully in 24bit mode and uses only system functions to grant compatibility on every
Amiga system. Because of this extreme system friendly programming Hollywood does also
run on Amiga emulators with great speed. Versions of Hollywood for MorphOS and AmigaOS4
and maybe also AROS are planned. On the Hollywood product page
you will find an extensive overview including screenshots from the program. In the
next days some applications done with Hollywood will be presented here. Hollywood
is delivered on CD-ROM and can be ordered now.
Hollywood is the Multimedia Application Layer for Amiga(tm) and compatible operating systems.
This means that it offers you a script language together with advanced functions that allow
you to create your own multimedia applications which range from a simple slideshow to a complex game.
The big advantage of Hollywood is, that it does all the framework for you. You do not have to
care for example, if your application is going to run on a ECS, OCS, AGA or RTG system. You
do not have to care if the Workbench screen your application runs on has 16 or 16.7 million colors.
You can concentrate yourself on the important thing which is your application and not its enviroment.
Hollywood is fully 24 bit enhanced which means that you do not have to mess around with palettes,
remapping and so on. Additionally it is fully integrated into AmigaOS(tm) and does not rely on a
specific custom hardware. Therefore Hollywood does also run on emulations like Amithlon or WinUAE
with amazing speed.
Using the Hollywood script language, the possibilities are almost unlimited. The basic version of
Hollywood comes with over 150 functions that range from disk operating system (DOS) functions to
functions that allow you to smoothly scroll animations and graphics on your display. There are
also many functions that allow you to display objects, pictures and texts with over 50 cool
transition effects or scale graphics and animations. You can also fade objects, texts and
pictures smoothly.
Hollywood uses the datatypes system to load all graphics, animations and sounds which allows
you to use all formats you have datatypes for. Additionally it supports unique things like
transparent windows which enhance the look-and-feel of your Workbench screen amazingly.
You can use true type fonts (with anti-aliasing), standard bitmap fonts and even the cool
Amiga color fonts with Hollywood.
The integrated sound system allows you to play various types of music modules (including
Protracker and OctaMED) but also sound samples. You have full control over this system because
you can specify which channels to use for play back.
Hollywood is a high-end application that needs some memory to work best. It uses a special
preload system so that all data is immediately accessible and the play back is incredibly fast.
Therefore it is advised that you have lots of memory (16 megabytes+) and also run a RTG
system like Picasso96 or CyberGraphX.
Hollywood is the absolutely number one choice in Amiga(tm) Multimedia nowadays and brings
the Amiga back to its roots...Multimedia! It comes with a compiler which can save your
applications as stand alone Amiga executables which may be freely distributed.
Hollywood is delivered on CD-ROM with many examples on it as well as over 250 kilobyte of
documentation in AmigaGuide format. It is only available directly from the author.
Although all this may sound a bit complicated to you, it is very easy. Programming skills
are not necessary. They are only of use if you want to create complex applications but for
the normal Hollywood usage, you do not need them because Hollywood is really easy to handle.
Graphics:
- Fully 24bit enhanced!
- Transparent windows are possible
- Over 50 transition effects for objects, pictures and texts
- Graphics can be scrolled smoothly
- Smooth and fast animation play back
- Support for transparent graphics and animations
- Functions for using textures
- Support for datatypes
- Support for true type, bitmap and color fonts
- Scaling of graphics is possible
- Application can open on Workbench or own screen
- Integrated easy Undo system
- Fully independent from the enviroment e.g. does not matter if user runs Picasso96 or CyberGraphX or AGA or ECS/OCS
Sound:
- Support for audio samples
- Full control over the audio channel playback
- Support for various music module formats
- Volume and pitch of samples can be modified during playback
- Sample size is not limited to 128 kilobyte
- Full Stereo playback
Script language:
- Variables, arrays and different data types (long, float, string)
- Conditions and loops can be used
- Easy handling of variables (no initialization, declaration)
- Functions for manipulating strings and doing math operations
- Compiler and linker to convert your script to an executable
- Inbuilt error handler that does all the error handling work for you
- Functions for debugging your script
- Labels that are fully integrated into the user interaction mode
- Plugins can be used to enhance Hollywood's functionality
User interaction:
- Buttons can be defined
- Hollywood buttons support mouse click and mouse over events
- Keyboard input can be monitored
- System keys can be monitored
- Window events (window is moved, sized, closed etc.) can be monitored with ease
System functions:
- Read from and write to files
- Easily read whole directories into an array
- Various file operations
- Many functions to handle files and work with them
- Query the Amiga system for information (e.g. CPU, Kickstart etc.)
- Retrieve information about hard disks, memory...
- Enhance your program to use different languages by using Hollywood's locale.library support
- Many time and date functions

Computer City: Amiga keyboards - Cherry Cybo@rd Amiga Edition now available
The Dutch retailer Computer City announces that the Amiga keyboards with Amiga logo can now be delivered after some problems.
The product line is called 'Chrerry Cybo@rd Amiga Edition'. Read the original message now.
The 'Cherry Cybo@rd Amiga Edition' keyboard from Computer City
Here is what happened so far:
-We approached Cherry to ask about the possibilities for their Cybo@rd
series. They told us they assembled the keys to the keyboards and then
'lasered' the characters onto them. This means a huge qty to buy for each
different country layout. The alternative would be for us to order single
keycaps, so we (or any other dealer) could order localised versions of the
keyboard and replace the keys. They told us that the left and right windows
keys were equal (mark 1). The delivery time was to be 6 weeks.
-We ordered them, received them after about 12 weeks (!) and had them
printed professionally, with special treatment so they keys wouldn't wear
off.
-We received the keys. Remember mark 1? The left and right keys turned out
to be different :-(
-We realised we had only left keys so we ordered the right (right) keys as
well and had them printed etc. too. This took another 5 weeks or so.
-We got the keys in today and they are available NOW. We are in the proces
of stocking the keyboards now, so all pre-orders will be sent out next week
and dealers should be able to order and supply either the sets of keycaps or
complete keyboards.
For the record; this is a fully official Amiga-licensed product. We have a
trademark and logo license with Amiga, inc. and they have approved this
design :-)
Cheers,
Ron

Amiga Inc.: New Executive update
Following the title link you can find the latest Executive update by Bill
McEwen. Some new products are announced, among others several "Game Packs" for Smartphones and PocketPCs. These products will be distributed obviously via big retailer groups in the USA and in England. Furthermore it is explained why the Amiga Inc. bureaus couldn't be reached (they moved to other rooms):
Bill McEwen - November 2, 2002
Greetings One and All:
What a great weekend is in store for Amiga and those attending the World of Amiga, and for those of you not attending I am sure that you will be pleased with the progress that we have made as a company towards shipping new products.
As you may remember from our last update we have broken up the company into two separate units. We have the desktop team focusing their attention on the AmigaOne and OS 4.0, and we have the Mobile Team who is focusing their attention on Amiga Anywhere and the content creation and distribution on the various products and platforms that we support.
These changes and the amazing hard work is now ready to be shown and announced to all of you. Not only are you going to see new products, but we have been able to sign up some pretty heavy hitters with regards to new distribution and new retail availability of these new products.
The Desktop team is focused on new products and services for the Amiga community, and the Mobile team is focused on products and services that are for the extended Amiga community, with our initial offerings targeted at the Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone Edition, and the SmartPhone. Our first customer for the SmartPhone was announced with Sendo as our partner for their Z100 phone, and now you will read about our next offering for PocketPC and PocketPC phone edition below.
Now we can begin the transformation from a development company to a company shipping products that you are able to go out and purchase for yourselves.
With the above mentioned, here we go:
- The office is moving and we will have the new address, and contact information up in the next week. So there is no need to worry about what is happening with the office, the change has been good for us. We needed to move into an area that is closer to the services and to the companies that we are working with.
- AmigaOne is ready to fly, and I have attached the news from Eyetech here with this update. So congratulations to all and the community for your new Amiga hardware.
- OS 4.0 is almost complete, and the Hyperion team is working very hard to get everything ready. They were delayed by having to complete some low-level work on the AmigaOne, and with their work completed they are ready to crank out the last remaining bit of work to provide a stellar achievement and package.
- There will be some announcements coming in the next couple of weeks from third parties who are now creating versions of their software for OS 4.0 and I have agreed not to steal their thunder but will have them make their own announcements first and then we will carry them on our site after they have made them.
- Amiga Games Pocket Paks will be available around the Thanksgiving holidays through several resellers in the US and in England, including CompUSA and mmO2 in England. Yes, what you are reading is correct. Amiga Games Pocket Paks volumes one and two will be shipping and ready this year at 29.95 each from several authorized retailers in the US and through mmO2 retail locations in England. These Pocket Paks include 4 game titles each, and we have two more packs following. This is great news as thousands of new customers here and in England are going to be able to experience Amiga Content on their Pocket PC, and Pocket PC Phone Edition devices.
- Amiga is also making available for release before Christmas Amiga SmartPhone Packs. These will be similar to the Pocket Paks, but targeted for the new SmartPhones coming out this year. As you know they will run on the new Sendo Z100, and they will be available for the new phones being offered by Orange also.
There are several more product announcements and partnerships coming in the next few weeks, but as mentioned before until it is real and ready, we will wait. So some very big news with the readiness of the AmigaOne and OS 4.0 within the last 10% of completion, and the availability of Amiga content being sold through National retailers in the US and England, I would have to say that we have been very busy indeed.
So again I thank you for your patience and support, and now the next steps in our development begins. The transformation from development of products to shipment of products, has begun. I am really looking forward to the next grouping of announcements, and product shipments.
Keeping the faith, and keeping it moving forward,
Bill McEwen and the rest of the Amiga Team

Eyetech: AmigaOneG3-SE and AmigaOne-XE Earlybird Systems now on sale!
Press release: We're there at last. Since the previous update to the AmigaOne section over 6 months ago the AmigaOne boards have been in the hands of our developers, and as a result of their feedback, the original firmware which we were to have shipped with the board (by Softex) has been replaced by specially adopted PPCBoot code. That, and identifying - and fixing a small problem with the Articia northbridge chip - have resulted in us holding back shipments of the consumer version of the AmigaOneG3-SE. That is until now!
During this period work has also continued with the AmigaOne-XE design (which has replaceable cpu modules). This design is now ready to go into production alongside the AmigaOneG3-SE. And perhaps the best news of all is that the G4 cpu is now available in moderate quantities, on acceptable delivery and price terms such that we are now able to offer a G4-based AmigaOne-XE at the same time as our public launch of the AmigaOneG3-SE.
The upshot is that we are taking orders for both the 600MHz G3-based AmigaOneG3-SE, and the 800MHz G4-based AmigaOne-XE, starting at the WoA-SE show on 2nd November 2002 - for delivery before Christmas (and, yes, for the cynics out there, we really do mean Christmas 2002!). A 700MHz G3 (750FX cpu) version of the AmigaOne-XE will be made available - at reduced cost - early in 2003.
But what about OS4 I hear you say - is that now ready? OS4 is now highly advanced, but no, is not currently ready for shipping, largely because Hyperion have had to divert a considerable amount of their time and effort in sorting out the AmigaOne's PPCBoot firmware. Our best estimate is that OS4 for the AmigaOne will ship early in 2003.
So why order an AmigaOne now? Well over the last six months we have had overwhelming demand from both dealers and individuals to ship the AmigaOne hardware - both boards and pre-built systems - now, together with LinuxPPC and UAE, in advance of OS4 being available. In addition this 'Earlybird' offer this also helps us spread the testing, assembly and despatch operations of the AmigaOne boards and systems over a number of weeks, which in turn helps us keep our own costs in check. So, in return, we are offering all users who wish to take up this 'Earlybird' offer a free, registered, copy of OS4 for the AmigaOne as soon as it becomes available. The Earlybird 'free OS4' offer represents a saving of around 12% on an AmigaOneG3-SE motherboard
This of course will not suit everybody, and if you want a switch-on-and-go AmigaOne system then this Earlybird offer is not for you. In this case we're afraid that you have a few more weeks to wait. However if it does suit you then don't delay - this offer is for boards and systems ordered up to and including 31st December 2002 or when OS4 becomes available, whichever comes first. Thereafter OS4 will become a separately chargeable item
As for prices, these have been revised to reflect currency movements since they were originally announced last March, particularly the weakness of the US dollar. Your local dealer will have the local currency prices for the AmigaOne outside the UK and the Eurozone. However the suggested prices in Europe - in UKP and Euro's - are as follows:
Board |
CPU |
UKP |
Euro |
AmigaOneG3-SE |
G3 750CXe@600MHz |
360.00 |

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
Happy Halloween to those who celebrate the holiday! It may be
appropriate that this issue of "Amiga Update" goes out tonight since
Halloween is the day for frightening "things" and in some ways we
might call this past month a frightening month. We didn't see much in
the way of Amiga news to send your way. A lot of what we did find
related to upcoming planned projects, beta releases and utilities
designed for specialized uses. There was no Executive Update from
Amiga either. I like it much more when the Amiga community makes a lot
of interesting noise. Silence is scary.
However, as is usually the case, there are interesting things going
on in the Community. We have stories on many of them below.
There's also some potentially interesting news from IBM. On the 15th
of the month, IBM announced the 1.8GHz Power PC 970 at the
Microprocessor Forum in San Jose, California. This new chip has the
potential of bringing true 64 bit desktop computing to the Amiga
community down the road in the Amiga1 line. We'll have to see how
this develops. Right now, I'd just be happy for readily available,
complete Amiga1 machines ... haven't seen them yet.
We hope you enjoy this issue, and we also hope for much more to
report to you next time around. Time will tell.

Editor

Typical, you wait ages and then you get new games to buy all at once.
With only one week to go to, we have the pleasure to announce that
there will be THREE new Amiga games releases for you to buy at the
World of Amiga Southeast Show 2002.
(In alphabetical order)
Quake II. - Hyperion-Entertainment/ID Software. A game that needs no
introduction. Yes! Not only will you be able to play QUAKE II at WOASE
on the Amiga Area, but thanks to some nifty work by the guys at
Hyperion, you will be able to buy it as well! Copies are being sent by
special courier from Germany to the UK, in time for the show! Be
amongst the first to own Quake II on the Amiga.
Software Tycoon - Epic Interactive. It's 1982. Small computer games
companies are springing up in the bedrooms around the world. A new
business beckons, where everything is in your hands. You have total
control, from creating the original concept, through hiring staff and
packaging design, to the development of massive marketing campaigns.
Do you have the skills to create and use new technologies and become a
Software Tycoon?
Tales of Tamar - Eternity Software. An internet based roundgame for
various computing platforms. You live in a world far away from our
civilization, comparable to the Middle Ages. In this world there
exists man, dwarves, dragons, and a lot of other races. There is
magic, there are druids and dungeons. You can fight, trade,
investigate, build cities, raise taxes and make peace contracts. Your
aim is to reign your empire and to survive against other opponents.

What's going on?
The Ottawa Amiga Show will have Amiga retailers selling products and
developers showing off their latest programs.
The retailers are Cinereal of Ottawa, Downtown Amiga from Montreal,
and Livewire Systems of Ottawa. Livewire systems has indicated they
will have 2 Amithlon systems, some Elbox hardware products, Quake two
and more! Cinereal will be demonstrating Matrox video editing
solutions as well as selling Amiga software and hardware.
ACK Software Controls from Niagara Falls will be demonstrating the
AmigaOne, the first new Amiga hardware since 1993, and a modified
Amiga 4000T, the last classic Amiga model produced.
Admission to the show is free.
Technomages will be on hand demonstrating their latest AmigaDE/AA
titles including Eric Schwartz Puzzles, Memory and others.
ZEE4 of Toronto will be on-hand demonstrating their brand new Amiga
DE offerings.
There will be several systems running demonstrations of Amiga Digital
Environment content.
After the show ends, there will be a post-show supper at the Royal
Oak, the regular meeting place of Amiga.info open to everyone who
wishes to attend. As usual, we will take over the basement.
We will likely have a webcam for those of you who can not make it to
Ottawa. Once it is ready, we will post the address.
When is the show?
The Ottawa Amiga Show is taking place on November 9, 2002. Doors open
to the public at 11:00am, and the show ends at 4:00pm. People should
arrive at the Royal Oak for around 5:30pm.
Where is the show?
The show is quite easy to get to from just about everywhere. The map
page will show you how to get to the show.
Why have a show?
There are two reasons - the first being that the Amiga computer and
operating system may have fallen from the mainstream, but to this day
there are dedicated users to use the Amiga for a wide range of uses,
including email, surfing the web, video editing, graphics work, and
many others.
Amiga Inc's new Digital Environment (DE) is an excellent platform for
developing software that needs to run everywhere - on PCs, on PDAs, on
cellphone and a myriad of other devices. Programming for DE is written
once, in either Java, C, or VP Assember, and from there will run on
any AmigaDE enabled device.
Any questions about the Ottawa Amiga show can be directed to
amigashow@technomages.net.

Some great stuff now online, and hopefully a few more cool new things
in the immediate future, too (stay tuned) :) http://www.amigau.com
We've got some cool new stuff online for you:
Site Mirrors: (http://www.amigau.com/sitearchives.htm)
- Amiga Source is now mirrored on our site, thanks Scott!
- we still maintain site mirrors of the excellent Blitz Basic,
Samplitude Opus (with software downloads) and Amiga Interactive Guide
sites, too.
Site Archives:
We have added two GREAT Amiga site archives from the somewhat recent
past:
- National Amiga tech pages: these are full of great tech
information, including pinouts, motherboard configs and lots of
accelerator information - These were originally done by Greg Scott and
used to be on National Amiga's website - thanks to Larry S. and Joe at
Archtech in London, Ontario!
- Spock's Logical Amiga Pages: As many of you may remember, this was
a great site that has been offline for some time, unfortunately due to
its author, Eric Robertson, passing on last fall. Thanks to Donald
Sowell for providing this data as hopefully a little memorial to
Eric's fondness for the Amiga and his excellent site.
- Amiga Realm archive mirrors (12 of them) - Thanks to Paul Andrews
for providing data to mirror their site archives!
Additional stuff:
303Tracker - this is a cool Roland TB303 emulator you can run on your
Amiga - software downloads included - thanks to Jeroen Schellekens for
his site archive and software (http://www.amigau.com/c-music/303t.htm)

DVD edition of 'The Deathbed Vigil and other tales of digital angst'
Dave Haynie is in the final stages of the preparation of a DVD
edition of 'The Deathbed Vigil and other tales of digital angst'. For
those who've been living, well, in the normal mainstream of modern
life and don't know this, this is the film he made about the end of
Commodore.
Says Dave: "As usual with DVDs, I've been trying to think of some
useful, interesting, or fun 'extra stuff' to put on the disc. I have
too much stuff, basically, but in my continual search for meaning and
all that crap, I came up with the idea of 'IMPACT '. Basically, with
the Amiga as we know it pretty much moved from the single most
revolutionary personal computer in history to more of a footnote in
history, just what WAS its impact. I can play with words, but the
question is too large, and too personal, for just one input. So I've
decided to solicit answer to this basic question: what was/is the
Amiga's impact. On you, on the industry, on life on earth. I know a
piece of it. Some of you may have more to add. So, here's the game.
Think of it as a contest, or whatever. Simply put, you write up a
paragraph; something succinct, or you'll get edited, even if I like
what you said. It needs to fit on one 4:3 TV frame at NTSC resolution,
in quasi-readable type.
"Send whatever you like to me at dhaynie@jersey.net. Put "[DBV]" in
the subject, and your preferred name at the end. I'll put the best
ones on the DVD."

Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper
four-in-one controller for
emulation support
The third generation of Catweasel controllers shows again that
Catweasel has always been a bit more than just a floppy controller. If
you have started an emulator on a modern computer, you'll know that a
lot of things are different from the original machine. The new
computer can't read the original disks, the old joysticks don't fit,
and the keyboard has a lot of keys in a place that you're not used to.
Once you have adjusted to the new situation, bad sound effects or
music that just doesn't sound like what you've heard over and over
again more than ten years ago spoils the party.
Catweasel MK3 solves all of these problems.
As the name already tells, it's a PCI board for modern PCs, MACs and
the new computers AmigaOne and Pegasos. The surname "Flipper" suggests
that there's more to this interface. The new Catweasel is a so-called
flipcard, it can be plugged into the Zorro-slot of a classic-Amiga.
Even if you don't have one of these bus systems, there's another
connector for the clock-port of an Amiga 1200 - a small pin header on
the
motherboard of the computer that's connected with a cable.
The main purpose of the Catweasel has always been to allow access to
non-standard disks using normal PC-diskdrives, even if you usually
need a completely different computer for that. The capacity of the
drive does not matter in this case: A 5,25 inch drive with 1,2MByte
capacity will read and write a C-64 disk with 170KByte as well as a
3,5 inch drive with 1,44MByte can access a 1,76MByte Amiga disk.
Together with a company that has specialized in data recovery, we're
working on the implementation of more than 1100 different disk
formats, and it does not matter that this has been classified
impossible by others before. Even the 800KByte disks from older
Macintosh computers can be used in standard 1,44MB drives, although
the original drives have rotated their disks at variable speeds. You
can get a complete overview over the supported formats in the
technical data. Even if the format you desire is not yet supported, it
only requires a driver update to get new features out of the
controller.
To bring the real feeling of the old games to new computers, the
Catweasel MK3 has two connectors for so-called digital joysticks. This
is the type of joystick that has been used by many computers of the
80s like C-64, VIC-20, Atari and Amiga. The connector was the same on
all these computers: A 9-pin Sub-D. Analog joysticks of that time
(so-called paddles) can also be used.
Emulation does not necessarily mean to bring nostalgia to your
computer. AmigaOS XL and Amithlon bring an operating system to the
PC-world that is superior to the mainstream systems in many respects.
A lot of users of that software wanted to use real Amiga keyboards on
the PC, that's why the Catweasel MK3 has a mini-DIN connector for an
A4000 keyboard. If you want to use an A2000 or A3000 keyboard, this
can be done with a PS2 adapter that should be available in good
PC-shops.
Last but not least, the Catweasel MK3 has an option to use the
original soundchip of the Commodore C-64, also known as SID (Sound
Interface Device). This part of the board has been carefully designed
in order to produce exactly the same sound that the C-64 produced.
There have been other attempts to bring this chip to the PC-world, but
none of them was really satisfying.
Catweasel MK3 does not accept compromise in this matter. Even direct
comparative tests with a real C-64 reveal nearly no differencies. This
is also caused by a real Commodore-Chip that is being used to generate
the SID clock frequency. Luckily, we have a good quantity of these
chips in stock. An additional circuit that is contained on all
Catweasel MK3 can output a fourth voice even out of the later versions
of the SID (type 8580) that could be activated by a software trick on
the old version (type 6581). If you connect the Catweasel MK3 to the
internal CD-connector of your soundcard, you can hear the fourth voice
on a separate channel if you like.
Prices:
Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper: 84,90 EUR
special cable for Amiga 1200: 5,- EUR
Soundchip 6581 or 8580: 20,- EUR
All prices include the German VAT of 16%. We'll start shipping on
november 25th, 2002.

Requires:
Amiga with 68020 or better OS3.x, TCP/IP stack, CyberGraphx/P96 or
AGA with BlazeWCP, MUI3.8, AHI, identify.library 13.x, NList.mcc,
BetterBalance.mcc (optional), XPK V4.0 (optional)
dynAMIte is a bomberman/dynablaster-clone that can be played (only)
over the internet (TCP/IP) by up to 8 players!
This game runs on your WB and thus multitasks happily with all your
other programs, so just try it and become addicted! =)
---------------
o Fixed a silly bug where a player could have had more than one
remotebomb resulting in hit-galore and serious other problems.
o Active powerups are now displayed in an additional window. See Menu
-> Windows -> Active Power-Ups.
o dynAMIte did not load a newly selected sampleset. Fixed.
o DServer now resets teammode and brings in initial amount of bots
after the last player left the server.
o DServer now also does highscores for teams.
o Added another ARexx command to stop a running game called STOPGAME.
o Added a new ARexx command called DOCHATLINE to DServer. DOCHATLINE
handles the passed string as if it was typed into the chat string
gadget.
o DServer now uses MUI's built in ARexx interface instead of an own
implementation. Because of this I had to change the MUI-Application
base-name to match the old Arexxport name. You have to snapshot some
windows of DServer again.
o Added an option to skip drawing of explosionanimation for blown up
powerups. See "graphics"-menu.
o Added an option to skip redrawing of powerups every 3 frames. See
"graphics"-menu
o Readded SKIPANIMS (skips drawing of bomb explosions) which is now
available from "graphics"-menu.
o dynAMIte crashed on custompuppets if xpkNUKE.library was missing.
Fixed.
o Did some cosmetical changes to DServer prefs.
o Added a button to DServer to log in bots.
o Dead players can't switch slots anymore to get resurrected.
o From now on, dynAMIte uses its own network code
(dynAMIteNET.library) in favour of amarquee.library.
o It's now possible to deactivate any powerup from within DServer.
o If a player used a custompuppet in teammode, the puppetgfx was used
for the whole team the player was in (only in loginscreen). Fixed.
o Removed timestatistics from the bottom of the gamewindow because of
its general usefulness.
o It's now possible to disable smokeeffect used for laser and
kickbombs.
o I've finally rewritten keyboard handling code and removed
dependency on lowlevel.library/GetKey(), so that it's now possible to
control the game from a keyboard connected to a Pegasos. This may also
fix some problems with some keyboard adapters for wintel keyboards.
o Games with one human and n bots caused the gamecounter to be always
decreased by one for every game. Fixed.
o Applied the same changes for timerstuff also to dynAMIte.
o DServer will now save the highscores in a fixed timeinterval
instead of after every game.
o Bots in DServer are now handled by an external client (detonator),
taking load off of DServer.
o When a player logged off during a game, the bombs of this player
left some gfx on the playfield. Fixed.
o Fixed a silly bug in DServer that caused enforcerhits when a user
tried to log into a full/offline server.
o Rewritten timer stuff for DServer to get back some sigs for other
things.
o Shield and other things never ran out for bots. Fixed.
o Observers got games/wins accounted for highscore. Fixed.
o dynAMIte crashed when one of the needed libraries wasn't found.
Fixed.

RC-FTPd offer at WOASE
For the duration of WOASE, I'll be offering rc-ftpd registration for the
reduced price of £10, instead of the usual $20 (£13 + commision).
As I'm feeling nice, and am completely broke (petrol and entrance money
only), while I'm at WOASE people will be able to register rc-ftpd in
cash, in pounds, and in person. I'll take their details and give them a
receipt, they'll get the personal keyfile when I get home and email them
out :-)

The World's First 32-bit Game Console?
This is not exactly burningly current news, but it is meaningful in an historical
context. On my foraging for exotic game consoles I bumped into a very
interesting Fujitsu product, the FM Towns Marty.
Fujitsu sold a lot of FM Towns PCs in the late 80s. At some point back then,
they decided to develop a game console, and the FM Towns Marty came
from that. The Marty was equipped with a 386 at 16 MHz, later there was a
486 version. It also had 2 megs of RAM. For storage there was a CD-ROM drive and
a 3.5 inch floppy drive. For the graphics there were special custom chips which
made 256 colors from a HiColor palette possible.
But the most interesting thing is: Marty was introduced in 1991! So the CD-32 loses
its title as the first 32-bit console in the world to the Fujitsu Marty. By the way Marty may
also be the second console to come with a CD-ROM drive (after the PC-Engine).
Because of the close compatibility to the FM Towns PCs there were also a lot of
games available, but there were also specialized Marty games, including versions of the
Lucas Arts classics Zak McKraken and
Monkey Island, and I would guess that these were the best versions of these games, what with 256 colors
and not the grisly MIDI music found in the PC version.
Pictures of the FM Towns Marty may be viewed here
and here.
Because Marty was not officially sold outside Japan it's difficult to come by information on it. So I suppose the CD-32
could also claim to be the world's first 32-bit game console. (ps) (Translation: dm)

TurboCalc Going Open Source?
There's about a fifty percent chance that TurboCalc will go open source.
Motivated by the free release of AWeb and other programs, I wrote TurboCalc author Michael
Friedrich a couple weeks ago, to ask if he might entrust TurboCalc to another programmer or
programming group for further development.
Observation: TurboCalc is a spreadsheet (table calculation) program, such as Lotus 1-2-3 (tm) or Excel (tm)
for PCs, or MaxiPlan (tm) for the Amiga.
I got an answer the day before yesterday (excerpt):
Subject: RE: Open Source TurboCalc
Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 08:40:51 +0100
...
the idea of open source sounds good, but I am not so sure if others would enjoy working with
my code:
300,000 lines of sparsely commented assembler code is not going to be easy to read, even I had some
problems with it :-)
....
I'll write you again.
Cordially, Michael
His comments so far. Certainly he will want to confer with Stefan Ossowski of GTI.
To raise some question (and spur discussion):
- What do past, present (and eventually new) TurboCalc users think of using a further developed
TurboCalc? Please don't write a list of requirements of WHAT needs to be improved or added. You'll get a
chance to express these comments!
- Are there programmers who are CAPABLE (this genre is not the simplest)
and who WANT to develop Turbocalc further? I'll do what I can to help and encourage as a Betatester from the start.
I'll be happy to hear sincere comments and discussion. (ps) (Translation: dm)

RP-Online: Philips don't want to tolerate problems with copyprotected music CDs
»Some copy protected music CDs don't work with several CD or DVD players. If a note about that is missing at the cover this is a fault. Customers might bring in that case the CD back to the dealer and demand their money back.
The Philips company, the inventor of the CD technique and licenser for "Compact Discs", doesn't want to tolerate this fault anymore.
Philips manager Gijs Wirtz said to "Computerbild": "CDs, which engender problems by replaying them do not fulfill the rule for a Compact
Disc. A real CD should work with every device. Even with CD ROM drives, DVD and car CD players."«

AmigaTalk V2.2 uploaded to Aminet
I had to update V2.1 of AmigaTalk to correct some minor problems,
hence the unplanned uploading of V2.2. (The update isn't arrived yet
on Aminet).
HISTORY
~~~~~~~
For version 2.2 the following enhancements/bug fixes were made:
- Fixed the install script (by deleting the History.txt copy
action & including the Images directory in the distribution).
- Added Status Window coordinate bookeeping to the AmigaTalk.env
file.
- Added more error detection code to initialization of the
AmigaTalk screen code so that the Command & Status window
will fill whatever screen you select. I've been able to check
almost all screen modes that the CyberVision64/3D uses (except
for 16-bit 1024 * 768, which shows a black screen).
AmigaTalk will not let you use a screen smaller than 640 * 400,
so don't try to. If you rename AmigaTalk.env, AmigaTalk will
use the coordinates from your Workbench screen (or whatever
screen is active).
- Added a ScreenModeID ToolType to the Icon (default: 0x40D20001).
- See AmigaTalk:help/History.guide for the rest.
Event: Website for THE PARTY updated
The website of one of the oldest scene parties at all, THE PARTY, was put
online with an new design today. The Party is held, like every year, from
December the 27th to December the 29th in central Denmark at the congress
spirit of the first years. The Party became more a meeting point for
gamers and those, who only want to fill up their hard drives via network.
Those who are atracted by the prizes (at least EUR 1000 for the 1st prize
at the mixed double demo competition) and the professional organisation
should have a view to the new homepage.
Datatypes: akJFIF/PNG/TIFF Update Version 45.7
Due to a screwed test setup, a buggy akJFIF 45.6 version went to Aminet.
As a result, 45.7 of all three datatypes now is available for download on
my website (www.ar-kleinert.de) This is because Aminet has a 10 day
upload delay for updates - and additionally I might not be able to do any
uploads the first week of November.
MPEG: SMPEG V0.4.4 - MPEG-1 player library for SDL
An Amiga version of the MPEG-1 player library 'SMPEG' with sound support has
been released, including a simple player program.
Video playback is based on the Berkeley MPEG player 'mpeg_play v2.2'. Sound
output is by way of a slightly modified version of the 'mpegsound-Library' of
Splay V0.8.2.
SMPEG thus supports MPEG audio (MP3), MPEG-1 video and MPEG system streams.
The library is subject to the GNU Library Public License (LGPL) Version 2 and
has been compiled with -m68020-60.
With 'plaympeg', a simple video player for testing the library is included (also required is the SDL library: CGX, AHI, etc.).
The C library interfaces are 'documented' in the file 'smpeg.h' and the MPEG*.h
files.
Amiga Flame: 6th anniversary, Go For Goal, Space-Flight simulation
The Amiga online games magazine 'Amiga Flame' celebrates its 6th anniversary,
reports about an ice hockey game for AmigaDE with 'Go For Goal', and about a
Spaceflight simulation which is in the first development stage.
On 12th October 1996, Philip Cosby went online with Amiga Flame,
so the online magazine is celebrating its 6th anniversary. Philip Cosby is
glancing back to this origin in an article,
describes the current situation and the reason why he started Amiga Flame: "It
was as though Amiga users were in a dark room and could see no future, only
darkness. I had to light up that room and show them that there are many amazing
and exciting games in development."
With Go For Goal,
an ice hockey game for AmigaDE is in development. It is inspired by the C-64
game 'Hattrick'. In 'Go For Goal' you control one field player and the goal
keeper - the computer acts as opponent.
This game is being developed a.o. by Gabriel Hauber,
who is also involved in the Java AmigaDE classes 'Jami'.
The target platform is currently PDAs with a resolution of 240x320 pixels. At a
later stage, this will be customizable, so screen sizes from mobile phones up
to desktop computers will be supported.
For more information about the game you can mail Gabriel Hauber
(gabrielh@gabrielhauber.com).
Amiga Flame has found out,
that a new developer team is planning to develop a spaceflight simulation.
According to team member Johan Dams, the game will be along the lines of
Elite/Frontier. One of the ideas is that the game should be playable over the
Internet.
The developers are aware of this project's scope and are looking for talented
gfx artists and programmers to push the project forward. Interested
people should mail Johan Dams (amiga@sin.khk.be).
Chess: AmiChess and Crafty
Achim Stegemann writes:
"Although having been announced as soon as the beginning of October, the two
new chess programs AmiChess and Crafty have finally found their way into the
Aminet.
AmiChess is a GNUChess 5.0.4 based program with a GUI making use of MUI.
Alas, some users have already told me that AmiChess doesn't run on their Amiga.
I don't know the reason for this, as it works without problems on my computers
(Amiga, Amithlon and UAE). In this case I am asking all users with this problem
to mail me their Amiga configuration and a SnoopDOS log file.
The second program, Crafty, is an Amiga port of the very strong program by Bob
Hyatt. The most current version 18.15 has been ported. Crafty can only be
played under ixemul in pure text mode in a shell. In return it has proven
itself to be a very strong opponent!
The binaries of both programs have been compiled towards a 68020/68881
combination and thus should run on this or better CPU configurations. Due to
the source code's particularities, a PPC port is currently impossible. However,
fast x86 emulators like UAE, AmigaXL or Amithlon are an adequate substitute.
Further information can be found on my home page."
AmiChess runs from AmigaOS 3.5/3.9, MUI 3.8 and CPU 68020 with FPU 68881.
Crafty requires the ixemul.library V48+ and runs from CPU 68020 with FPU 68881.
individual Computers: Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper and PCI POST code display
Two new products are listed on individual Computers' Web site. These are
'Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper' and 'PCI POST code display' respectively. There are
exact delivery dates for both products. More information can be found under the
title link.
Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper is on one side a PCI board for PCs, Macs,
AmigaOne and Pegasos, and the other side (thus 'Flipper') can be stuck into the
Zorro Bus of a classical Amiga.
In addition, this board contains a connector for the A1200's clock port.
Beside the traditional Catweasel functions, support for diverse floppy disk
formats (C64 floppy, Amiga etc.), three new functions have been added:
- Support for digital Joysticks (VIC 20, C-64, Amiga)
- Mini-DIN connector for an Amiga 4000 keyboard. Whoever wants to use an
A2000 or A3000 keyboard can do so using a PS/2 adaptor which can be
bought in well-stocked PC shops.
- Additionally the board offers the possibility of inserting the C-64's
original Soundchip (SID). According to the manufacturer, greatest care
was taken to make sure that the chip really sounds exactly like in the
original computer.
PCI POST-Code display (Port 80 Display) is a diagnostics board for all
computers with PCI slots.
The PC BIOS has a built-in diagnostics help, which writes each step of the
self diagnosis, the so-called Power-On Selftest (short: POST), to the PCI bus.
On a two-digit display, the POST-Code Display shows the Hex code, which then
can be translated into plain language with the help of a table from the BIOS'
manufacturer.
As many errors are caused by the power supply, five LEDs additionally show the
state of all voltages on the PCI bus.
Further information about the products can be obtained through the title link.
Event: Amiga + Retro Computing 2002 - Website now also in English
All parts of the page are now available in English as well. Small changes
have been done to the website design, and a free hotel booking service
has been added.
AMIGA + RETRO COMPUTING 2002 takes place on December 7th and 8th, 2002
at the Eurogress Aachen, Germany.
The main focus of the show will be on Amiga-related products. The biggest highlights will surely be the new mainboards "Amiga One" and "Pegasos". The title "Retro Computing" does not mean that this is a nostalgia meeting or even a fleamarket for old computers. Just the opposite. The exhibitors will show that the technologies of the home computers of the 80s are still improved today, and that they're still available as new products in the 21st century.
With AmigaOne and AmigaOS 4 on the one side, and Pegasos with MorphOS on the other side, the Amiga - multimedia wonderbox of the late 80s - is ready for a comeback with high-performance PowerPC processors. The "Digital Enviroment" of Amiga Inc. (USA) allows using adapted software on multiple mobile and home-based devices like desktop computers, mobile phones or personal digital assistants (so-called palmtops). This makes Amiga-technology perfectly suited for the future.
Probably the most interesting product from the Retro Computing area is the Commodore One (Codename: C-One). Developer Jeri Ellsworth is working on the ATX-sized motherboard for nearly two years now. As the name already suggests, it's the inofficial successor of the legendary C-64 by Commodore. Exchangable CPU modules can turn this board into nearly any computer of the 80s, among them is also the well-known Atari 2600 console that became famous in Germany with the game Pac-Man.
After big German magazines like Focus and Computerbild Spiele wrote about the project, it's first presented and sold in Europe at AMIGA + RETRO COMPUTING 2002.
We're especially happy that Jeri Ellsworth is making the long trip from USA to Germany to present the board in person.
The name Atari is closely tied to the computers of the 80s. Developers are still active today; The magazine ST-Computer and developers of the prestige products Calamus, Papyrus or Eclipse will surely be in Aachen, where visitors can also gather information about the exciting Coldfire project that wants to accelerate old Atari ST computers with a powerful processor.
SUBWAY production started
Michael Böhmer of E3B writes:
Not ignoring the difficulties within the Amiga market we at E3B decided
at least to start a small production run of the SUBWAY USB card also.
The open positive feedback by many Amiga users was not a small subject
to make this decision. Therfore we see the introduction of the SUBWAY
as a small gift to the users.
We hope to give a positive sign for the classic market and hop to fulfill all expectations of quality and innovation.
The smallness of this production run will cause some delays. The availability of this card will, as usually practised by E3B, be announced by the known dealers when the shipping really starts. Stay tuned.
Encryption software: PGP Version 2.6.3in
Under the title link you find a small download side by Andreas Schwarz. Among other things you find the current version (20010323) of the encryption software 'PGP 2.6.ín' there. However contrary to the Aminet version one needs the ixemul 48 library. Nevertheless the speed corresponds at least to that of the age-old asm version of the Aminet. The list of fixed bugs is rather long. It was compiled using the GCC 2.95.1.
The archives are also very well arranged. They contain nearly the complete English docs + en/es/fr/de language files. The execs are for 020+ and 060. Praise to the author.
Event: Report from the Pegasos/MorphOS demonstration at the "BeGeistert"
To give you a first overview about who I met in Düsseldorf at the
BeGeistert, let's start with
Nicholas Blachford, known
through his audio software Aural-Illusion
and Aural Synthetica.
He did a detailed interview
in February 2002 for Amiga Arena. He is working as a software engineer for
Thendic France for about a month now.
Furthermore Bertrand Presles and Sébastien Lokhamkhouak were on board as well.
Bertrand is president of the ASUM
(Association of Sympathiques Utilisateurs de MorphOS), a union of MorphOS-fans,
which originated from the AFUA group (Association Française des Utilisateurs d'Amiga),
a union of Amiga-fans. Sébastien is currently founding a new French MorphOS print
magazine called 'Fly High'.
The Pegasos
"Betatester 1" computer system was being demonstrated with the
MorphOS operating system.
What hides behind the "Pegasos" and "MorphOS"? The Pegasos is a new PPC computer system,
or better said new hardware, which bases on an ATX motherboard offering dual G3/G4
processor support. This computer was developed by
bplan GmbH, Frankfurt, and is manufactured
by DCE, Oberhausen, and
Thendic France is the worldwide
distributor.
MorphOS is an excellent fit for this new computer.
Below we take a look at a part of an
interview done by amiga-topcool
with Ralph Schmidt (one of the MorphOS authors) to better understand why this
OS was developed:
amiga-topcool: Ralph, when did the idea for MorphOS strike you, and what
caused you to begin?
Ralph Schmidt: Let me go back a bit before that, because MorphOS is a stage
in a longer sequence of events. In September 1995 we (the former Phase 5)
decided to introduce the PowerPC as the new CPU in the Amiga market, because
there was no visible future for the old 68K series of processors. To that
end we worked not quite a year on emulations and plans for how the OS could
be ported.
All of that went out the window as we opted instead for the ppc.library
approach, for reasons of time and market conditions. Then in 1998 there was
again a bit of energy to the original approach after the Flash, ppc.library
and SCSI developments were winding down. We saw absolutely no sense in a
simple AmigaOS port or a 68K Workbench extension ala OS 3.5, so our goal was
the foundation of a new OS, an OS that would contain an "A-Box" for old
Amiga API programs. In March 1999 the microkernel for this new OS was
functional, in that such an AmigaOS box could be integrated and this would
then serve as the OS foundation.
So the operating system MorphOS (boots in 2.5 seconds) is a microkernel based OS,
upon which sits an A/box, which would then allow the execution of Amiga programs
(which don't access hardware), but faster as compared to Amiga hardware.
The operating system MorphOS has today matured to a good operational status,
Ambient (the Workbench clone) is based on MUI and can be adapted to individual
design wishes.
During the performance I have asked whether it is possible to use
hard disks from the Amiga to be used without problems. Bertrand attached his
Amiga hard disk as slave and booted his computer, after this we could
use all the programs stored on his Amiga hard disk.
However, if I say that the OS has arrived at a good operational point, I mean
that it currently runs faultlessly in the main areas, but there also are somethings
left to do. Herefor I would like you to remember that the individual stages of development of
our AmigaOS. AmigaOS wasn´t perfect at the beginning, and it isn't today. MorphOS is
nevertheless promising because there are already
many programs, that are converted natively to MorphOS, further software will follow,
just think about those many programs which are in work by
Titan-Computer and
e.p.i.c. interactive.
Around 15 programmers are intensively engaged in making MorphOS
a better solution in the meantime.
Users who think themselves to be capable of coping with a system which still
raises smaller problems, can purchase this Pegasos/MorphOS computer as a
so-called "Betatester1" (with NDA). Later, users of the Betatester1
still have the possibility to test additional hardware, such as a smart card readers.
The "Betatester2" will be sold at the beginning of the coming week, no NDA (obligation
to be silent about certain things) needs to be signed anymore. A date for the
official customer release isn't finalized yet. The German Distributor is
Vesalia, and on their website you can find
all the technical details.
Finally, some answers to the questions asked by amiga-news.de readers:
Which DVD- and CD-ROM-drives are utilizable? Are there any limitations?
Yes and no. Most devices run, there will be a detailed list on Thendic France´s website shortly.
When will the support for 512 MB RAM-modules be ready?
These already can be used, when it's registered RAM. There will also be a list
of all useable RAM-modules.
Will there also be support for Firewire and SCSI-adaptors?
SCSI now, Firewire later, there will be a commercial solution for this
interface not after the release of the video editing software
'Motionstudio' from Titan-Computer.
Is there planned TV out and dual monitoring support?
This does not run yet, but will be implemented. When isn't clear at this
point. It has definately no high priority.
What is the current state of Eclipsis and the JAVA-VM?
In development and there are first prototypes.
My personal impression after this demonstration: Not yet finished, but very very promising!
Our thanks go to the great people at Virtual Dimension,
If all goes well, we will have an ambiente con in winter 2002/03
on a castle. It will also be the release party for the Tales of Tamar
base set. Every player is cordially invited. You will soon find
detailled information in the LARP section of our homepage.
Last but not least, today we have prepared a tech demo for Tales of Tamar
to be released on Aminet. This demo will help you find out if Tales
of Tamar works properly on your system and also gives you some
background information. It is the same demo as two years ago, but
based on new routines and now also works on Amithlon. Unfortuneately,
we're not able to test it on MorphOS yet, but if some MorphOS
betatesters download this demo, we would like to hear about possible
Event: Pictures of visit to "BeGeistert" in Düsseldorf
Here is a selection of the pictures that have been taken today by Petra Struck on the BeOS event BeGeistert. Mainly, of course, pictures of the Pegasos/MorphOS and Walker presentations, which btw may be repeated on Sunday morning if required. An extensive report will follow.
 Ulrich 'Scholly' Scholz (left) "guards" the entrance ... |
 ... and collects the entrance fee of 10 Euro per visitor. |
 Most people are currently attending a BeOS demonstration ... |
 ... thus the room looks nearly deserted. |
 While waiting for Nicholas, I have already shot a picture of the MorphOS surface. The windows' design is variable and, thanks to MUI, customisable. |
 Gert is having BeOS explained to him at length :-) |
 T-Shirts of all sizes and all BeGeistert event vintages are waiting for buyers, three of the old vintages can be bought for 25 Euro, the current "BeGeistert 2002" is 13 Euro. |
 Bertrand Presles and Sébastien Lokhamkhouak of Thendic France |
 Here a glimpse of the Pegasos' inside |
 The complete system |
 Nicholas Blachford of Thendic France |
 (This picture in 1280 x 960) A further look at the Pegasos' inside |
 The Walker! Nicholas has given it a try, and partly even managed to make it work! |
 The Walker's backside really strongly resembles a vacuum cleaner, the connectors however reveal that there is a complete computer with all the bits and pieces hiding inside. |
 Here two - to my knowledge never before published - drawings ... |
 ... of Walker prototypes in a tower (well, rather a giant tower). The original pictures will be submitted to us later. |
 I have seldomly visited events where the empty pizza boxes were so neatly stacked for disposal! |
 Here now a couple of pictures from the BeOSers' room ... |
 Discussions here, object lesson there ... |
 ... naturally, the pizza order is also important! |
 Gert is looking forward to dinner at a Chinese restaurant ... |
 ... and I, too, am in the best of moods, for I have seen much and, obviously, I am totally delighted. Till next time with "Petra on Tour" ;-) |
Event: status report from the Amiga Meeting Nord
Slowly it's getting full ;-). We have really reached the limit of our capacity. Right now there are 30 computers installed. Our network is still running flawlessly. Hopefully there won't be any problems with the electricity ;-).
Around 17 o'clock will the premiere of the film "Dünn2" take place. After this will
Andre begin with the demo presentations. The organizers are really excited about the event being so popular. The first sales via our stock market have already been done. People are busy in handicraft work and especially in helping each other with the soldering-iron or just with good advice. Here still lives the Amiga feeling!
Under http://www.amigameeting.de/Webcam/Cam.jpg
is the web cam still running delivering a new picture every 25 seconds.
AmigaTalk V2.1 uploaded to Aminet
Version 2.1 of AmigaTalk today was uploaded to Aminet. A look at the .readme file
will show some significant additions since V2.0.
has been re-written & enhanced for the Amiga line of computers.
James T. Steichen, Copyright (c) 1998-2002.
Be sure to have the sound turned on when you start the program!
(It's called AmigaTalk for a reason!)
WARNING:
~~~~~~~
There are some things that I can no longer test due to the fact
that my system has a CyberVision 64/3D graphics card & is using
the cybergraphics.library (et al). I would appreciate some
feedback about problems that you might find, since I will not
always be able to find them.
The system is currently NOT fully documented (especially IFF & BOOPSI
Classes), so expect to see some holes in the documentation.
I did NOT go back & verify that all the test files still work as
shown.
REQUIREMENTS:
~~~~~~~~~~~~
AmigaTalk uses DeckBrowser which is copyrighted (c) by InovaTronics.
I've included a copy of it with my distribution. It should be placed
in the command path where the Amiga OS can find it (example: 'C:')
Video converter update 2.2 beta
Carsten Siegner wrote:
Today I have finished a new beta of the program 'Video converter'. This version fixes a problem with Movieshop picture files. Until now ffmepg broke off when it met an unknown Jpg sub format (ffmpeg is very particular about Jpg sub formats). Now I have created a "work arround" by coding a dataype loader plugin for Video converter. This plugin can read all picture formats for which a datatype is installed, convert them to PPM and hand them over as a picture list to Video converter.
All you have to do is choosing a pictures directory in the lister as input, one for the output and then just pressing "convert".
Unfortunately it's only a beta version because it always crashes on my Amiga when using very big pictures lists and I could not fix the error entirely. This beta can be downloaded from my hompage.
First we would like to apologize that Czech Amiga.News was unavailable
Now we ask for your help!
If you find a link referring to the old address, please notify the
To contact us, please write to newsy@czex.com
We made the best of the change and improved the html code, which should
result in faster display in Amiga browsers, especially on slower machines,
and light-speed downloading :-).
BTW main page of Czech Amiga.News finally validates as HTML 4.01 Transitional!
During the transition we have also fixed the
Music/Sound Expert Sought for Crossfire II
Dreamworlds Development is looking urgently for a music/sound expert who can also
add music to animations, in order to prepare Crossfire II. The animations are in MPEG
format or if needed in single pictures on a CD. The result of adding the sound should
therefore be a timed sample in a common format
There is not going to be much monetary reward involved (because of the
overall market situation). The best case scenario would be approximately
100 Euros when the project is published. You can get further details by
expressing your interest in an email.
Thylacine - Tasmanian USB Controller
For many long years it wasn't possible to use a USB gizmo with
your Amiga. Now, within the space of a year come not one but
two new USB cards on the market. After we introduced E3B's
HIGHWAY in the May and July/August 2002 issues, and its little
awaited, we're making a little trip to Australia for you. That's
where the Zorro II card Thylacine has been available for a little
while.
Software Tycoon - Learn as the game progresses...
When the digital entertainment industry was still in the
shoes of a little child, the pioneers of game history could
give free rein to their innovative ideas.
After the version for the PC was released about a year ago, the
Amigans and Mac-heads [and MorphOSians -dm] can also dive
into the world of a Software Tycoon and virtually manage the
development of a game.
PC Competitor - Twice-Enjoyed Retro Game Fun
To throw away something valuable, to give something the old heave ho
without a good reason, now that's a pity. So how can the old competitions, zip sticks,
Pythons and Hyperstars be regenerated for employment in Amiga
emulators? The rescue comes from the joystick interface PC
Competitor!
And in addition to all that:
Amiga Society: Website Renovation in Progress
Horst Diebel writes:
»So, the rebuilding of the page is beginning now. Because a few areas of the page
didn't get many visitors, and I unfortunately don't have time to spruce them up,
they will be shut down. This step is overdue, and many people have called for it.
The "Bücher" section will stay in place as the core. "Schlachtfeld" will get its own domain
sooner or later and be distanced from the society. The other headings, whether they are little
matters from Micha or me, will also be closed. Many people thought we should do this and
we announced it long ago.
The only update really is in the Little Book of Amiga Software - a few games will be found
here, which absolutely must be taken up again.»
Soms3D Seeks New Partners
Soms has been on ice for a long time because there was a lot of programming to do. This made us really think about things. We decided
not to make a 2D adventure, but rather a realtime 3D online role playing game.
To do this we already have a 3D programmer and our first internal beta version. The capabilities of Soms3D will be made public at a later
date (assuming our new webpage is online). The adventurers will reach, more or less, a common solution. And naturally all that one may
do online must also be doable in an online game.
To reach our goals we still need a bit of help. We are looking for:
- A musician who can deliver his music in MOD or MIDI form.
- A programmer who knows his way around Online-Programming.
- Because Soms3D is based on PPC it would be better when partners have a PPC, especially when programming.
- Applications or Inquiries go to Sylvio K..
Game 'Armada' released on Aminet
Armada is a round-based game for two to five players. It is a version of a game formerly played with paper and colored pencils. To start off each player places his sea port on the map. As the game progresses players select their ships and attack opposing ships. It depends on the distance and a roll of the dice if the opposing ships are sunk.
Armada-Homepage is here, and here is the Aminet download link: Armada.lha. The author would like to hear some feedback about the game and its homepage.
AMHuhn: Programmers are overwhelmed :-)
Telemar Rosenberger, one of the developers of AMHuhn is totally overwhelmed by the positive response and submitted the following statement for release:
Hello AMIGA and AMHuhn friends,
we would like to thank you very much! We didn'd expected such a huge approval and friendly help.
Since the AMHuhn is at the net the incoming emails don't stop, there are so many mails from all over the world to respond, it's getting hard to do something else, there are positive criticisms, brief notes of thanks, suggestions for optimization or problems. Nothing negative yet :-)
Getting so much approval there is nothing left for us than continueing. I know there are problems with Picasso96 but I have to note that I can try cybergraphics only by myself. There are problems as well if the iff.library and the
picture.library are both not inside libs:.
Regarding the datatypes it is important to have the jpg and anim datatype installed, no matter if these are WOS, PPC or 68k.
With AHI sound the following is important:
At the AHIprefs you should choose 3 to 4 channels for the music unit at the mode. With a 68040 is AHI 4.18 the best, it seems to be the fastest.
Have fun and I hope that most people have no problems with running the Huhn.
With the best regards
Telemar Rosenberger
Game: New AMHuhn executable with screenmode requester
As reported yesterday,
Telemar Rosenberger and Franz 'Cj-Stroker' Schlick have developed a
"Moorhuhn" clone with the name "AMHuhn". From comments there was obvious
that some users still have problems with the game, e. g. those who use P96.
Telemar fastly has put a new executable to the site which offers a screenmode requester at the launch of the game.
To test if problems are solved with this, he asked us to offer this new executable for download. This is not the whole archive but only the main program 'AMHuhn'.
TTEngine 4.3 released
Grzegorz "Krashan" Kraszewski writes:
I have released V4.3 of TTEngine. Main new feature is font scaling and
mirroring. Below you can read full list of changes from previous V4.1:
- I've placed an open counter in the LoadedFont structure. It removes problems with many RastPorts using one font.
- TT_SetAttrs() function may be now called before TT_SetFont() and is able to create RastPort context.
- TT_SetFont() returns now BOOL value instead of VOID, because it can fail in low memory condition.
- New demo program MoreFonts shows using many fonts at once in one window.
- Affine transformation support code added. (Particular examples of affine transformations are: scaling, shearing, rotation).
- Font may now be scaled in both the axes independently with TT_ScaleX and TT_ScaleY tags. Scaling range is from 0.01 to 100 (negative too, results in mirroring of the text).
- TT_TextExtent() returned random values in the TextExtent structure, if no font has been set for the RastPort using TT_SetFont(). Now the structure is zeroed in the case.
- New demo program Scaling shows - as its name says - font scaling.
- TT_OpenFont() performed illegal READ-MODIFY-WRITE operation at address $0000003A, if opening of the font file failed. Fixed.
- Header file "ttengine.h" was modified to comply with AmigaOS headers standard.
