BarsnPipes New 1.25b with integrated UI
As the skin funcionality (e.g. interface look designed by the user) was almost not used at all did Alfred Faust decide to create a version of BarsnPipes New 1.25 where all 460 images of its 64 colour interface are integrated into the program's code and therefore do not have to be loaded additionally anymore.

This decreases the loading time of BarsnPipes New significiantly especially on slower computers. This version might be the better solution for the user who doesn't need the skin functionality. (cg) (Translation: wk)

AmigaOS 4: X11-Server with GTK, WxWidgets and Amaya (preview)
In a thread on amigaworld.net Edgar Schwan has announced that he is going to port the X11-server to AmigaOS 4. The old server makes some trouble and so the author uses an existing, ixemul-based 68k-version. The libraries and clients have been ported yet.

Ports of GTK/GKD 1.2.20, WxWidgets and the CSS-Web-Browser Amaya (currently without netzwork support) Schwan has finished. A first preversion will come soon.

Acorn: Windows notebooks announced
With Acorn, it seems that another known home computer brand experiences its cannibalization: Acorn Computers Ltd., founded in January of this year, is announcing Acorn notebooks with Windows XP for the Computer Trade Show, which takes place on May 10/11 in Birmingham.

So far unclear is the legal situation: since whilst the company claims to own the rights to the Acorn name and logo, the UK Patent Office still displays Element-14 as the owner. Element-14 emerged as a result of the Acorn split and was later taken over by the US company Broadcom. (snx) (Translation: cad)

Markus Watterott / Tales of Tamar-Team (ANF)

Tales of Tamar in HiRes for the Amiga
The massively multiplayer strategy game Tales of Tamar now runs on the Amiga also in highresolution screenmodes. Details on this and other news on the game does the Tamar team comment as follows:

It is done! Finally, after eight months of continued work, we are pleased to present to you Tales of Tamar HiRes 2D!

The new client of our massively multiplayer strategy and role playing game runs in a resolution of 1024*768 with double buffering in 15, 16 and 32 bit as well as still in 640*480 pixels in 8 bit.

So Tales of Tamar still runs on all Amiga systems from an A1200/AGA with 68030 turbo card up to the most modern computers but takes advantage of the faster hardware of an Amithlon PC, an AmigaOne, a Pegasos or a fast UAE system.

Some older screenshots can be seen here but the engine's already improved in the meantime.

Unfortunately do many Amiga computers come to their limits with this engine. E.g., for the hires map is a 68060 processor and a graphics card the minimum requirement. An uncluttered installation is needed as well. Should this not be the case you'll have to stick to the 640*480 resolution in 8 bit.

Our experiences with speed are as listed below:

A1200/AGA

640*480/8 bit = yes
1024*768/15 bit = no
1024*768/16 bit = no
1024*768/32 bit = no

Reason: AGA cannot display a 1024*768 screen and would be too slow, either.

A500/A1200/A2000/A3000 with graphics board and 030/040 processor

640*480/8 bit = yes
1024*768/15 bit = no
1024*768/16 bit = no
1024*768/32 bit = no

Reason: the processor is too slow to run the hires map.

A500/A1200/A2000/A3000 with 4 MB Zorro II graphics card and 060 processor

640*480/8 bit = yes
1024*768/15 bit = yes/no
1024*768/16 bit = yes/no
1024*768/32 bit = no

Reason: the map works with 15 or 16 bit but not particularly fast as the bandwidth is limited by the Zorro II bus. 32 bit do not work as the graphics card comes with too little memory.

A1200/A3000/A4000 with 4 MB Zorro III graphics card and 060 processor

640*480/8 bit = yes
1024*768/15 bit = yes/no
1024*768/16 bit = yes/no
1024*768/32 bit = no

Reason: the hires map works with 15/16 bit when the OS installation is proper and optimized.

A3000/A4000 with PCI graphics card with at least 8 MB and 060 and PowerPC processor

640*480/8 bit = no
1024*768/15 bit = yes/no
1024*768/16 bit = yes/no
1024*768/32 bit = yes/no

Reason: the hires map works nut not fast. Usable with proper and optimizes OS installation.

Pegasos/AmigaOne/WinUAE/Amithlon

640*480/8 bit = yes
1024*768/15 bit = yes
1024*768/16 bit = yes
1024*768/32 bit = yes

Time will show whether we can improve these values any further. Surely not witjout assembler code - and there comes the question to mind whether the support for the project is still enough.

Out last call for testers followed almost 40 users but only a small number did really test. So, if you want to see this project continued on the Amiga help us and participate. Alternatively we do not see any chance to fix all the possible bugs.

Now here are the features and bug fixes:

New features
  • HirES mode activated
  • 24 bit graphics support integrated
  • Auto conversion of 8 bit graphics integrated
  • From the residence you can return to the main screen using the ESC key
  • Input handler rewritten
  • The client now works with the prerelease version 4 of AmigaOS 4
  • The FTP download via tavern does not block the mouse anymore so that you can still work with the system in the meantime
  • Small optimization of the map screen (speed increased)
  • Tales of Tamar now uses the expansion.library to decide whether it runs on an AmigaOS 4 "Classic" system or an AmigaOne (thanks to Stephan Rupprecht)
  • The client loads the graphics faster on some systems
  • Descriptions of cities and landscapes remain when scrolling
  • Much program code of the map now supports the PowerPC unfortunately offering only a little speed increasement under WarpOS
  • Numbers about the workers remain visible when scrolling
  • New catalogs added
Bug fixes
  • FTP code changed and improved, bugs removed
  • Workaround for a MorphOS blit bug in CyberGraphX 5 integrated
  • WarpUp under AmigaOS 4 deactivated because it is slower due to the context switches with cache flush than the 68k emulation
  • Many more bugs fixed
Known bugs
  • Packed24 modes do not work
  • Under AmigaOS 4 there may appear some font errors (reason yet unknown)
  • CyberGraphX 4 color fonts >8 bit do ot support transparency
  • CyberGraphX 3 yet untested; as ForceChunky is missing there may appear colour bugs in the game (we need testers!)
  • Moduleplayer could still lead into problems under AmigaOS 4 (no testers = no information)

The current 2D hires map is further on an integral part of the upcoming 3D map that will be built in first into the PC version to avoid a loss of time due to compatibilitiy problems and missing testers. On this note it was an important step for us.

A personal note: This 2D hires map is my personal thank you to the Amiga computer that has accompanied me through a great part of my life now. It is an ideal completion for the game and further development can only take place if enough gamers keep the game running.

The hires 3D map marks a step at least as big as this 2D map and it is indispensable that many testers take actively part in such a further development to identify bugs. Just a small example: only two or three AmigaOS 4 testers really support us in this project. The result is that bugs that are not obvious aren't found if you do not spend yourself very much time. So we wish that the support in the Amiga community will increase again.

Special thanks go to Stephan Rupprecht with whom I had many controversial discussions over weeks about the way of the blitting and whom I have to thank that Tales of Tamar runs smoother than before. Thank you, Stephan! Though it was not up your alley you had listened to me for weeks. :-)

Another thank you goes to Wolfgang Vogel. Without his PowerPC card I wouldn't have beeen able to finish this version as my two boards are broken once again.

Thanks to Frank Mariak, too, who is always there when there are CyberGraphX problemes. Hopefully development on CyberGraphX continues. ;-)

And thanks go to the whole AmigaOS 4 team and the MorphOS team. Both supported me well.

How does it proceed?

The hires 2D map wa ported to the PC now. There'll be some tests and then it will be released.

The Mac version will now adopt the finished sources and then offer the hires map, too.

With Richard Drummond we could contract a new developer who'll be working exclusively on the Linux version (PPC & x86) as well as possibly a Zeta version. Richard should be known to some AOS4 users and already present a first working Linux version. He, too, already owns the hires source codes and he will try to adapt the Linux client accordingly.

In addition we could sign a capable and known authoresswho ,to our pleasure, has dealt with the subject of Arbanor and therefore will write a book about Tales of Tamar. With this does will an old idea from the last century been picked up again. :-)

But nonetheless we need above all graphic artists who want to push our project. All in all we are looking for:
  • pixlers for 2D hexagons and improvements of the GUI
  • 3D object designers & 3D textur designers
  • Assembler programmers for optimizations in the 68k code
  • Musicians for Digibooster/Fasttracker modules
  • Translators for Portuguese
  • php programmers to support our browser version
  • Programmers for improving the Amiga installer script
Many regards,
Wolfen
and the Tales of Tamar team (snx) (Translation: wk)

Sun director resigns
Scott McNealy, founding member and for 22 years CEO of the computer company Sun Microsystems, is now no longer running the business as a chairman but only as a member of the supervisory board. His successor will be the previous COO Jonathan Schwartz.

Sun Microsystems is predominantly active in the server section and supplies large companies and universities. Above all Sun is also known as the developer of the platform independent programming language Java.

However Sun has failed in the last couple of years to get rid of the deceleration in the development of their company. Indeed the turnover has increased year-on-year by 21 per cent to 3.2 billion US dollars, but the net loss increased as well from 28 billion dollars to 217 billion dollars. The stock exchange looked upon the resignation of Mc Nealy favourably: Google Finance and Yahoo Finance. (nba) (Translation: iw)

AmigaOS 4: E-UAE 0.8.29-WIP1
Richard Drummond released the new version of his UAE-version E-UAE. Several bugs are fixed since the last release, also some new and untested features are included. The major changes since the last release Die wichtigesten Änderungen seit der letzten Version (fully Changelog):
  • Many core emulation changes and fixes merged from WinUAE 1.1.
  • Fixed support for autoscroll screens in the P96 emulation.
  • Re-written support for emulator traps (including a new portable method to call host code from 68k code, replacing the old 'stack magic' method).
  • Hence, the 'old' bsdsocket emulation has been entirely replaced by the 'new' bsdsocket emulation - which should now work on any Unix-like system.
  • Improved translation of OCS/ECS colours to host colours (thanks to Francesco Pretto and Toni Wilen for this).
  • Support for hardfiles larger than 2 GB (thanks to Martin Blom).
  • JIT support for NX-enabled CPUs (thanks to Martin Blom).
  • Emulator snapshots (state saving/loading) supported.
  • Fixed expansion of '~' in config file paths (thanks to Martin Steigerwald for reporting this).
  • Optimized rendering to 8-bit and 16-bit screens.
  • Fixes for building with GCC 4.1.
  • SDL: The SDL display driver now tries to use video memory if possible for the Amiga display (the new rendering optimizations make this feasible now). This applies to the X11 DGA SDL display driver, AmigaOS SDL in full-screen mode, etc.
  • SDL: Preliminary support for double-buffered output (thanks to fari mueller for keeping up the pressure).
  • 'SDL: hide_cursor=<bool>' option now supported (thanks to kadi for the idea).

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

Maybe it's because April starts with April Fools' Day for some of us
- a day of bad jokes and strange pranks - but we have some oddities in
our story set this month. For starters, the author of Frying Pan seems
to have, ummmm ... jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire (I
know, but it was just BEGGING to be said). He's included what may be
the most controversial demo limitation in some time in his shareware
program. Details are below.
And for those of you looking for CPU modules for your gear, we have a
story announcing some that will be available soon. But you'll want to
check out the prices carefully. Once upon a time, Amiga meant lots of
power for less money than others could offer. That situation has,
saddly, reversed itself. It's not the manufacturers' choice, it's a
matter of market economics. Even so, it is odd to see these high
prices for Amiga gear, necessary though they may be.
Finally, shart eyed readers may spot something a bit different in
this issue. It concerns a change in story placement from our usual
practices. Maybe I'll just have some fun with this and not mention
what the change is and see if any reader is interested in figuring out
what the change is. And why.
As always, we hope you enjoy this issue.

 Editor

AmiWest 2006 Date Is Reserved!

===The Hotel is Booked

The Clarion Hotel Cal Expo, site of AmiWest 2005, has been reserved
for October 21, 2006! After some hard negotiations, we were able to
secure the venue where the inaugural AmiWest '98 show was held.

===Changes In 9 years.

Of course, many changes have occurred in the venue and in Amigadom
since that time. The hotel has continued their update and we'll have a
lot more news on that as the official information releases begin.
We're working behind the scenes to bring another great AmiWest show to
Amiga enthusiasts throughout the world.

===Mark Your Calendars Now!

Now is the time to mark your calendars for this new date. After
listening to feedback from our loyal attenders and vendors, the
October date was set for better weather and better airfares.

===And a Good Time Was Had By All!

That was last year. This year promises to be a good time as well,
bringing the Amiga community together at the longest-running Amiga
show in the United States! Come and be a part of it!

===Watch for Official Information Releases!

The AmiWest committee is working even as you read these lines to give
you good information in plain text information releases to keep you
informed of our progress. As always, you can go to our web page to
view the HTML versions as well. Watch sacc.org/amiwest for
developments and contacts.

===See you there!

The show takes place on Saturday July the 29th

The doors will open to visitors at 11am and close at 5pm
The raffle(s) will be called sometime in the afternoon.

Place

The show will take place at the Kingsway Centre in Scunthorpe - UK.

The Kingsway Centre is a large conferencing centre and is located
right in the heart of the town next door to the 2 colleges and right
on the main road through Scunthorpe.

Our goal for this year is to become a much more professional outfit
and with that in mind we have booked a much bigger, more technology
orientated venue right in the centre of town. We hope to be able to
draw some high calibre exhibitors and maybe even one or 2 VIP's.
Please check out our Exhibitors section on our website to see who have
already agreed to exhibit, and please check back regularly as we are
willing to do all in our power to make this show the best we possibly
can.

Other highlights of the show include a raffle; the prizes have not yet
been confirmed but one of the prizes could well be an Amiga4000!.
Also, an Amiga show isn't complete without a Sensible Soccer
competition. So we will be running one, and possibly a StuntCarRacer
tournament too, with prizes to be had. We will also be providing a
free buffet lunch. Of course I'm sure you will all agree one of the
major highlights of any Amiga show, are the visitors themselves!.

Tickets on the day will cost 6 however if you order them in advance
they only cost 5 so we strongly suggest you pre-order your tickets.

Tickets will be sent out shortly after you have paid for them and
online ordering will close at the beginning of July

The Scunthorpe Amiga User Group (from here on in referred to as
"SCAG") was founded back in the summer of 2004 by Darren Glenn and
James King. Up until early in 2005, we were only 2 members so didn't
have much of a web presence.

However in early 2005 we got a few emails from Amiga users wanting to
know when the next Amiga show was going to be held in the UK so
decided to hold one. That meant a website needed to go up, and as a
result our membership grew slightly.

Although this group was founded and based in Scunthorpe it is open to
anyone throughout the world, we meet online as well as in Scunthorpe.
We are also open to anyone with even the slightest interest in the
Amiga, be it the official classic Amiga, the AmigaOne, Pegasos, AROS,
UAE, etc... You are all welcome.

This is our second year as an active user group and as such we will
probably be making meetings a much more scheduled thing. We will most
likely be holding them at the beginning of every other month.

If you'd like to know more about our usergroup why not head on over to
our usergroup website: www.Scunthorpe-Amiga.webhop.org

Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), a leading supplier of smart cards and
ystem solutions for telecommunications, payment and identification,
and Amiga, Inc., a provider of cross-platform enabling technology for
digital multimedia, have agreed to work together to demonstrate the
use of Amiga's technologies with G&D's GalaxSIM(R) high memory SIM
cards.

The GalaxSIM(R) is a new series of (U)SIM cards combining the
established SIM products such as the UniverSIM(R) Callisto family with
flash memory, designed to meet the demand of wireless multimedia
services. The cards offer memory capacities ranging between 64 MB and
512 MB, where the SIM's standard EEPROM memory is supplemented by a
flash memory device in the module. This means that memory intensive
applications, such as games, music and video files or telephone
directories, can be stored directly on the flash memory of the SIM
card and the relevant security information, such as keys or right
objects could be securely stored in the SIM card controller. The
GalaxSIM(R) is designed to support games, entertainment, MP3 music,
video clips, IMS services and similar applications on mobile phones,
PCs and other electronic devices. The built-in smart card controller
supports secure applications and digital rights management
requirements.

The GalaxSIM(R) employs a standard plug-in SIM form factor where the
smart card chip is responsible for the popular applications furnished
by the SIM card, for example network authentication, secure storage
and SIM toolkit applications. The internal GalaxSIM(R) system
architecture contains the flash controller, flash memory and the smart
card chip in a 3- or 2-chip version. Both MMC and USB high speed
protocols can be used to ensure the swift transfer of data between SIM
card and mobile phone.

The Amiga technologies are intended to allow G&D customers to provide
the AmigaAnywhere(TM) application engines and Amiga multimedia
applications across many devices that support GalaxSIM(R) SIM cards.
The combined technologies are designed to assist operators in
deploying quadruple play services by enabling users to play and
manipulate the same content across devices that support SIM card or
multimedia card technologies, such as mobile phones, PCs, IPTV and set
top boxes. The Amiga-enabled GalaxSIM(R) cards have been designed to
be deployed by carriers on both Linux and Microsoft driven devices and
to allow consumers to quickly and easily move SIMs and content across
devices.

Amiga technologies provide an exceptional audio, video and interactive
experience that is being developed to take advantage of local hardware
components, including GPS, video and 3D acceleration.

The goal of the demonstration at CTIA is to validate G&D's advanced
position by running high quality, complex applications across
GalaxSIMs(R). The GalaxSIM(R) demonstration shows video, entertainment
and games (including AmigaAnywhere arcade, puzzle and casual games),
as well as content branded with major league sport marks.

"GalaxSIM(R) is the ideal platform for the subscriber to realize the
high performance and quality offered by the Amiga gaming environment,
as well as the unique portability of games and content across home and
mobile devices," said John O'Malley, Vice President of
Telecommunications for G&D in North America.

"Integrating Amiga technologies on the GalaxSIM(R) was very simple,"
said Greg Sigel, Amiga's vice president of sales and marketing. "G&D
has made great strides in bringing the GalaxSIM(R) to market. The CTIA
demonstration is extremely compelling."

APC&TCP is proud to announce that it has taken the distribution of the
well known text editor CygnusEd.

CygnusEd will be able to run on the classic Amiga and AmigaOS 4. A
version supporting MorphOS is planned.

In only a few weeks the program will be available.

The support homepage for CygnusED will be online in a few days aswell.

http://www.apc-tcp.de

About CygnusEd Professional Release 5

The maybe most famous text editor for developers was developed by
Bruce Dawson, Colin Fox & Steve LaRocque (CygnusSoft Software) 20
years ago and was originally published by themselves. Already at that
time CygnusEd has been known for its speed and solidness. CygnusEd has
been developed even further in the following years and was one of the
first programs with an ARexx interface and the first Amiga text editor
with Undo/Redo functions. Many Amiga developers grew up with CygnusEd
and a lot of software for the Amiga was developed using CygnusEd.
The last version 4 of CygnusEd was published in 1997 and was a fully
reworked version adapted to AmigaOS 3.1.

The new version 5 of CygnusEd has been enriched with new functions and
it is even faster and more solid. The helping tool "Ed" has been
rewritten completely from scratch and is supplied with CygnusEd
including the complete sources. Many old restrictions and flaws of
CygnusEd have been eliminated. Version 5 is also the first version
ported completely with all helping tools to the PowerPC processors and
one of the first completely adapted commercial products for AmigaOS 4.

A new version of DvPlayer is now available. Changes since the previous
release:

    * Added direct DVD support
    * Added automatic detection of CD/DVD drive (no need to specify
      device name/unit anymore)
    * Added support for the new 64bit DOS functions so that files
      >2GB are now handled correctly
    * Implemented the I/O plugin system and moved the DVD/VideoCD
      support to an external plugin
    * Screen Blanker is now not allowed to activate while playing
    * Implemented AppWindow support so files can be dragged onto
      DvPlayer's window
    * Now the previous filename is remembered in the file requester
      when opening files
    * Window is now opened on the frontmost screen (if it's public)
instead of the Workbench screen so that if it's started from a
different screen it will open there.
    * Improved 6-Channel to Stereo audio conversion routines to avoid
distortions which appeared with a few DVDs
    * Fixed NOTRIPLEBUFFER option (was broken when subtitle support
      was added)
    * Fixed sound distortions with interleaved AVI files
    * Now ensures that only complete frames are sent to the video
decoder for AVI files. This should fix the problems with
      partially downloaded AVI files.
    * Fixed a bug in the subtitle code which caused memguard hits
    * Fixed a serious bug in GUI loading (thanks to memguard)
    * Fixed a nasty bug in the exit code which could cause random
      crashes

DvPlayer is an ongoing project to bring the ultimate multimedia
experience to the Amiga computer. It is a unique and Amiga-only
multimedia player, developed by Amiga enthusiasts, for Amiga
enthusiasts!

The current version of DvPlayer requires AmigaOS 4.0 and supports the
following video formats:

    * MPEG-1/2 video streams
    * MPEG-1/2 system streams
    * VideoCD and SVCD
    * DVD Video
    * AVI files

DvPlayer supports many audio and video codecs via avcodec.library,
including MPEG Video 1/2, DiVX, XVID, MJPG, Cinepak, Indeo Video, PCM,
MPEG Audio (Layer1-3) and more.

To achieve the fastest possible video playback, DvPlayer uses fast
direct-rendering algorithms for every possible HiColor and TrueColor
display mode. There are also separate rendering routines for half
scale and also for movies with 16:9 aspect ratio so that they are
correctly displayed on a 1:1 aspect monitor without being stretched.

Support for using the video overlay is also included. Overlay is
currently only supported by the Voodoo drivers; for Radeon owners it
will be available in future releases of the Radeon graphics driver.

DvPlayer features an easy-to-use Graphical User Interface.

Keyboard shortcuts are available for quick and easy access to
functions.

Handling of multiple files is implemented, so the user can easily
select many video files and step between them either automatically or
by the press of a button.

The GUI is skinnable, allowing everyone to get the look-and-feel they
want

You can easily switch from window to full screen display and back
(only for registered users).

DvPlayer can be placed into AmiDock and the user can drag'n'drop
files onto the DvPlayer icon to make them play instantly. Files can
also be dragged into DvPlayer's window which adds them to the file
list.

It is possible to switch between the different audio streams from the
menu or with keyboard shortcuts, even during playback, for example to
select a different language.

The popular .srt and .sub subtitle formats are supported. Subtitles
can be loaded manually or automatically. The position and appearance
of subtitles can also be configured (font, size, colour).

The new 64-bit DOS interface functions of AmigaOS4 are supported to
allow files larger than 2GB to be correctly handled.

For DVD and VideoCD playback, the DVD drive where you have a DVD or
VideoCD inserted will be found automatically. There is no need for the
user to specify device names and unit numbers.

DvPlayer features an I/O plugin system, which allows external plugins
to be developed to expand the functionality of the program. For
example a plugin supporting internet streaming protocols would
instantly allow DvPlayer to play internet streaming videos.

The Frying Pan (shareware) is (as the name says ;) a CD / DVD burning
/ mastering software for alternative platforms (Amiga / Pegasos / A1 /
Amithlon & UAE / other clones).

Program is based mainly on users' suggestions as well as own
inventions; I hope You find this program easy to use and suitable for
Your needs.

I've released 0.4c FryingPan for all of you who had troubles or ideas
recently. It fixes a number of problems (I bet it includes new ones as
well), so - what do we have?

# read & write speeds are set right after the disc is discovered,

# Amiga specific rockridge extensions appear to work good - enjoy your
comments & protection bits :),

# Gauge has been updated a bit...,

# Contents are now discovered properly on some "incompatible" -ROM
drives

# Writing does not end at 65535% any longer heh,

# Filerequesters will show you your .info files,

# You can name your drives,

# A requester is displayed when you try to write too much data to your
disc,

# No overburning for DVDs allowed,

# You can specify system type for your disc (so you can make a
bootable MOS disc, too ;),

# Data is updated after erase operation,

# MUI4 problem has been fixed,

# You can start FP from an icon (yeeee!! hehe),

# Iconifying FP will display its icon instead of default one.

GREAT thanks to HIGHLANDER for his fantastic contribution to the
project - fantastic skin for 0.4FP and a cool CoFFE icon :D.

DEMO LIMITATION

For users who have not registered the software by now - the only
limitation implies corrupting recorded data at random positions
{!!!!! Brad}. No speed or other limits have been introduced.

Registered users of Fryingpan can use it without Problems.

APC&TCP turning 14 years old
Andreas Magerl writes: APC&TCP is turning 14 years old. To celebrate this, we have decided to push down the prices of many APC&TCP products in the online shop permanently.

APC&TCP is more active than ever. CygnusEd 5 is right before its release and also the release of MED Soundstudio 2 is coming closer and closer.

But work is also going on for DigiBoosterPro and furthermore we do check if there is a possibility to release a reprint of the English version of the Amiga-Guru-Book.

Besides that, development is going on for a lot of other products which will be released this year.

The APC&TCP computer club, from which the distribution service originates, was founded some time before already. If someone does still know the exact date, please get in contact with us. (snx)

IRC Client: Wookiechat 2.1
The MUI-based IRC client WookieChat (screenshot) is available in version 2.1 for AmigaOS 3/4 since today.

Besides several bug fixes (among which, one of the buffers was wrongly dimensioned, which could possibly lead to illegal memory accesses), this version displays the number of participants in the current channel in the title bar and now supports the "usermodes" of the ZiRC network. A detailed changelog is part of the archive. (cg) (Translation: cad)

Genesi: No MPC7448-cpu module for the Pegasos II
Apart from that what Genesi has announced, there will be no MPC7448 based cpu module released for the Pegasos II.

As a reason is mentioned that the shortly announced cpu specifications aren't met - as a consequence it would consume too much current and run too hot to guarantee a sufficient increase in performance in the Pegasos. Finally the MPC7448 consumes as twice as the current for a merely increased performance of 20 percent. (snx) (Translation: ts)

a1k.org: status update, Breakpoint gallery
"Hagbard" writes: "For quite a long time many parts of the forum have not been visible for guest users, as we have made bad experiences with unregistered users. Whoever wants to have complete access to the forum is asked to create an account, which is quite easy. Further innovations:
  • Our programmer Rene has made an effort to make almost the whole forum Amiga-Brower enabled. Of course also compatible to all other browsers.
  • Our chat system has been updated as well, it has been enlarged and mistakes have been sorted out.
  • A user map for members has been introduced, where members can sign on. The map is, however, still in the beta stage and currently only shows Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
  • Furthermore we are happy to expand our forum with two new subsections. One for the Amiga-Demoscene and another for Amiga game collectors.
  • And last but not least there is a gallery with 206 images (from an Amiga-user's view) of the Breakpoint 2006.

Greetings to all Amiga-users" (cg) (Translation: iw)

Scout Open Source team, Thore Böckelmann (ANF)

System monitor: Scout 3.6
The system monitor Scout is now available for AmigaOS/68k (from version 2.04), AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS in the version 3.6.

In the following you can find the most important innovations, a complete overview can be obtained from the ChangeLog file.

24-Apr-2006, Release 3.6, programme version 37.290:
  • Scout_window_detail.c: now displays correctly number of colours for 32bit screens
  • Scout_resethandlers.c: the OS4 specific list of reset callbacks is now also scanned for entries, because the list of reset handlers is normally not used anymore
  • Scout_fonts.c, scout_fonts_details.c: added tf_Extension field, if a font offers this
  • Scout_arexx.c: added the missing remove function for reset handlers. Until now this has never been implemented. Also the last direct poking in the base structure of input.device to obtain the list of input handlers has been replaced by a proper function which acts the same way as does the scanning function in scout_inputhandlers.c
  • Scout_tasks.c: added now function which returns the usual name of all known signal bits
  • Scout_tasks_details.c: the old Task field tc_TrapAlloc and tc_TrapAble don't exist anymore for OS4. Instead they always represent a pointer called tc_ETask. Hence this one is shown now. Furthermore Scout can now recognize a process' code type by using the new V51 DOS function GetSegListInfo(). Additionally for OS4 the SegList pointers are now obtained via GetProcSegList() instead of hacking through pr_SegList and pr_CLI->cli_Module. If there is a clean way, then USE IT!
  • Scout_tasks_details.c: added the extended V50/V51 process fields. These will only appear in the OS4 build
  • Scout_window_details.c added the embedded fields ViewPort, RastPort, Bitmap (and all attributes) and LayerInfo of "struct Screen". Therefore the entries "UserPort->SigTask" and "WindowPort->SigTask" of "struct Window" have been dropped since these can be inspected by clicking on the port button
  • Scout_mount_details.c: the capacity calculation is now done with native 64bit math for the OS4 and MorphOS builds. Hence i64.c is no longer needed for these, but only for the OS3 build, because SAS/C cannot do 64bit math itself
  • Scout_extras.c, tblib/errormsg_ErrorMsg.c: somehow I never realized that exec/RawDoFmt() cannot do parameter sorting by using something like "Hello %2$s %1$s", "second", "first". Hence the function ErrorMsg() got always passed one parameter too less and that completely crashed on OS4. The catalog description has been modified accordingly. The prototype for ErrorMsg() was missing the usual "VARARGS68K" definition anyway. All in all this made Scout crash when it tried to complain about outdated or missing external MUI classes
  • Scout_print.c: somehow I deleted a NULL-check before copying one string to another, which caused crashes when trying to print information of a window to a file
  • Lots of minor changes

AmigaOS 4: Directory Opus 4.17 pre 19 (alpha)
Jocke 'Zerohero' Birging makes a PPC native alpha version of the known file manager Directory Opus 4 available. The main program is characterised as very stable, within ConfigOpus there may still appear crashes (especially calling the screenmode requester is disadvised).

You need the asyncio.library, xfdmaster and xfdmaster.l.main. The author wants to find out the real need of a DOpus 4 port and therefore asks for Paypal donations.

Installing hints:

Before running the PPC version for the first time you should do a restart. Make sure that there are no parts of the 68k version installed in the system directories (e.g. LIBS:). (cg) (Translation: wk)
