File system: SFS 1.269
Jörg Strohmayer provides a new version of the alternative file system SFS:
- 1.269: Forgot to disable some debug output in 1.268, fixed.
- 1.268: Requesters don't use TimedDosRequester() anymore since the new
SYS:Prefs/Presets/Requester feature of requester.class could cause
deadlocks.
- 1.268: Changed some memory allocations to MEMF_PUBLIC/MEMF_SHARED.
- 1.267: Now checks the free stack size and uses the old file system API if it's low.
- 1.266: ACTION_EXAMINE_ALL now returns ERROR_NO_FREE_STORE if there isn't even enough space for a single entry in the buffer.
- 1.266: ACTION_EXAMINE_ALL now returns ERROR_OBJECT_WRONG_TYPE if someone tries to use it again after directory scanning was complete already (implicitely or by using ACTION_EXAMINE_ALL_END).
- 1.266: Fixed wrong error return code for ACTION_READ_LINKS.
- 1.266: Now uses IExec->CopyMem() instead of a custom memcpy().

Print magazines: Amiga Future is taking over Total Amiga
Press release:
The German magazine Amiga Future is taking over the famous English magazine Total Amiga from issue 27.
In a very close cooperation with Robert Williams and the Total Amiga Team, we have realized a concept to guarantee the future of an English magazine for a very long time.
Of course this will only be possible if there are enough subscriptions all over the time. However existing Total Amiga subscribers will receive any magazines left on their subscription. Issue 26 of the Total Amiga is the last issue to be published by SEAL in the UK.
In the near future there will be an English release of the German Amiga Future, which will take the place for the Total Amiga. The first new issue of the Amiga Future to be published in German and English is the number 67 for july/august 2007 (release date 5th of July).
For this all the German articles will be translated into English, so the content of both editions will be the same. Our intention is now to get in contact with some more translators with English as their native language.
Interested users, they don't have to work for free, should call our editors office as soon as possible.
Both issues of the forthcoming new Amiga Future will be released at the same time. In other words there are no changes for our German readers in the future, but almost all things will change for the current readers of the current Total Amiga:
On time release every two months is one of the important things for the Amiga Future editors. Every issue can be ordered directly from us or from several Amiga dealers worldwide. (Interested dealers please call us too).
Every magazine can be ordered as single issue or as subscription, you can choose it with or without a Cover CD-ROM. Because the Total Amiga did not have such a feature in the past, all current subscribers will receive their magazines without an Cover CD-ROM. Subscribers interested in upgrading their subscription to include the CD can call our office before issue 67 is released Of course upgrading to the Amiga Future with CD-ROM is always possible for additional 3.- Euro at any time.
Each Issue Amiga Future magazine currently contains 52 pages, cover pages in colour, the rest b/w. This won't change for the future as it is an important part of our concept. So it is even possible to release new issues even without any advertisers in a single issue!
Prices have had to change in comparison to the Total Amiga because there are more issues per year and the magazines will now be posted from Germany.
Every English or German issue of the Amiga Future will cost 4.50 Euro without a CD or 7.50 with our Cover CD-ROM. All prices plus shipping costs, e.g. additional 3.75 Euro worldwide.
Our special subscription price is 39.90 Euro resp. 57.90 Euro for the CD-ROM edition. Here are the shipping costs already included. You can see, becoming a subscriber is a lot cheaper (and easier) than ordering a single issue and it gives our editors confidence in the future of the English magazine.
We invite anyone interested in an English Amiga magazine to order the first issue as soon as possible or even better subscribe to the magazine and become a part of the Amiga Future community. We can always only print a small additional quantity of magazines above those for subscriptions and preorders so make sure you get your copy.
Our editors office is reachable at:
Amiga Future
Postfach 83
D-83234 Übersee
Germany
amigafuture.de
redaktion@amigafuture.de
The new forthcoming English translated issue of the Amiga Future magazine can already be ordered in our online-shop, the same for subscriptions with or without the Cover CD-ROM.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us via eMail or by visiting our English section of the website. Of course there is even a newsletter available, to subscription send eMail to newsletter-subscribe@apc-tcp.de.
About Amiga Future
The Amiga Future was founded about nine years ago and has started with issue 11 by the publisher ICP (e.g. German AmigaPlus) because of technical reasons. Later on the publisher FALKE has taken over the Amiga Future magazine with its editors and the AmigaPlus too. Almost seven years ago we had an buy out and the Amiga Future was done by its editors itself. Since issue 27 the magazine is done completely by its editors office, meaning writing articles, layout and even sales and marketing. Actually we have a very safe financial base, so even if the subscriptions getting lost that much this would be no reason for stopping the magazine at all.
Additionally there are almost daily enhancements at the website. Besides the biggest cheats database (over 5.000 cheats for over 2.000 Amiga Games) we have a very large database with over 1.000 articles available online. Actually we have even a new gallery with over 1.000 Amiga related pictures of all kinds. Another new feature is our download area with lots of full releases of famous Amiga Software titles (this includes Games and Applications).
Since some time now we are also hosting the very famous Big Book of Amiga Hardware (BBoAH) which is being updated very often. Quite some other enhancements for the website are always planned.
About Total Amiga
Total Amiga is an A4 printed Amiga magazine published by the enthusiastic Amiga users at South Essex Amiga Link. The magazine covers all aspects of the Amiga from a user's point of view, we try to be as honest and realistic as we can. Each issue has a selection of news, product reviews, hints and tips, tutorials and opinion. Inside the magazine you will find a variety of writers, some regular and others contributing the odd piece now and then.
The magazine has now been running for about eight years, for the first nine issues it was called "Clubbed". Total Amiga is published quarterly (four times per year). Total Amiga is available by subscription world wide, we also sell single issues and distribute through Amiga dealers.
Total Amiga is produced entirely on the Amiga using PageStream 4 and a variety of other software. We try to maintain a high quality throughout the magazine and have been praised for our production values. Total Amiga is a non-profit publication and all the contributors and everyone who works on it gives their time for free as a service to the Amiga community.
Future
To retain the quality even in the future we need your support. At first of course we need enough subscriptions of the Amiga Future. Second we need some good translators and even writers for the website.

Individual Computers: Clone-A presentation, Catweasel drivers, Breakpoint
On saturday, march 31st, Clone-A was successfully presented at Schloss Rahe Business center in Aachen, Germany. Project leader Oliver Achten and owner Jens Schönfeld faced up to the visitor's questions and presented an Amiga where the complete custom chipset was replaced by Clone-A development boards.
In addition to demo programs that we have prepared, lots of programs were shown that visitors have brought. All these programs were executed without any flaws, just one program made the computer crash, where it wasn't clear if it was caused by a read error from the disk or by an incompatibility of the chipset. The visitor was given a voucher for 100,- EUR. In further tests after the demonstration, we could not reproduce the error, so there's no known incompatibility between Clone-A and a "real" Amiga at this time.
A new version of the Catweasel MK4 driver is available from our support site. Version 2.3.0.0 is a public beta version that corrects many known issues and adds new features. The most important change is that the joysticks can now be used as input devices for any Windows program (for example emulators), without the need for adapting these programs first. A new configuration program eases the use of the imagetool, and a few files for developers have been added to the archive, so direct access to disks is possible for other programs. Certain computer configurations now allow the "suspend to disk" function. This lets you put the computer into hibernation mode without having to shut it down completely. Since this function does not work properly on all computers yet, we decided to release this driver version as a beta-version with known issues and continue to work on this part of the driver in the coming weeks.
Like every year at easter time, the Breakpoint party takes place in Bingen, Germany, where more than 1000 visitors are expected. Of course we are sponsoring the event with cash and hardware prizes. The presentation of Clone-A will be repeated during a seminar. Unfortunately, project leader Oliver Achten does not have the time to take part in the Breakpoint party.

Online articles read better than newspapers
The reading behavior of online articles differs from that of print articles - but in favor of online texts, where the break-off rate lies lower. This is the result of a study by the Poynter Institute on behalf of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. Herein, the reading behavior of four print and two online newspapers was tested on 600 people. Read the complete article at Golem IT-News under the title link. (nba) (Translation: cad)

Coldfire turbocard: Status-update for Coldfusion
In a thread at amiga.org Oliver "Oli_hd" Hannaford-Day gave a statement to the status of his Coldfusion project.
The goal is to develop a Coldfire based turbocard for Amiga computers.
The developer told that he keep on working at the project but he does not believe in finishing it. There would be too many problems (connecting the turbocard via the Amiga-bus) therefore the connection with the PCI-bus currently would be the only practicable solution - but which has different problems.
Currently Hannaford-Day spends his time for other, smaller projects. He will not stop his Coldfire-project because he has invested too many resources but he also recommends all interested users to "look for different solutions".

Graphician needed for Amiga game project
David Brunet writes: Gunnar von Boehn is looking for one or more GFX artists to create new Amiga 2D games. The games will be in the spirit of great Amiga titles and will be based on the Arcade Construction Kit (ACK) project which started last year.
As the game is based on the ACK engine, it will run on all faster Amiga platforms. This includes AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, AROS and fast AmigaOS 3.x systems like UAE/WinUAE and PowerPC or Coldfire equipped classic Amigas. In addition to this, the game would be able to run on other platforms such as Linux, Windows and Mac OS.
There are 2 game genres possible:
Genre 1:
Classical shoot'em up like "Menace" or "Hybris".
Typical ideas are space shooter, plane, submarine or Rambo style.
Genre 2:
Classical beat'em up in the spirit of "IK+", "Karateka", "Streetfighter", "Samurai Showdown" or "Sword of Sodan".
Basicly everything is possible ranging form Karate, Samurai, Knights, Monsters, Super Heroes, to catfighting Bikini Babes.
The exact look and feel is fully up to taste and abilities of the GFX artist.
A nice option is to start with simple one2one Karate type games. For such a IK+ type game we would only need one background image and one set of sprites. It could later be enhanced with extra story line, extra backgrounds and extra characters.
The GFX artist needs to be able to create all the images for his game. This includes the title screen, the backgrounds and the sprites. The game engine supports all types of resolutions and color models. The game engine imposes nearly no limits on us (i.e. size and number of sprites is nearly unlimited). The targeted resolution is 640x480 in True Color. But other resolutions are possible if wanted.
With a fast GFX artist, it could be possible to create such a game in less than a month.
There is a nice bonus as well. Genesi offered to sponsor this project by donating a free Efika to every GFX artist who helps to create a game for Amiga/MorphOS.

USB stack: Poseidon 3.6
Press release:
The just completed new version V3.6 of Poseidon is now available. It includes several enhancements, fixes and supports more mass storage devices, ethernet adapters and the infamous USB Rocket Launcher.
Download it here or use Trident's built-in online update facility.
News in V3.6
- Mass storage class overhaul. Now supports bigger physical block sizes for automounting of RDB partitions, FAT/NTFS and also CD/DVD drives, also adding a lot of emulation, workaround and new compatibility fixes (also fixes the multi LUN problem reported here multiple times).
- Several fixes and changes regarding USB 2.0 support.
- Reworked Prefs Handling, enhanced Trident.
- Changes, fixes and enhancements in the main library.
- New class supporting ethernet adapters using ASIX Chipsets.
- New shell tool for the use of USB Rocket Launchers (no this is no April's fool joke).
- This release also contains a workaround to the deficiency in Elbox' spider.device that can be activated with the "Compatibility hack" option in Trident.
I really spent a lot of time and effort on this release, polishing a lot of the internals at various places. Mass storage should now work better than ever. The new Asix Ethernet class makes it possible to benefit of 100MBit adapters on USB 2.0 -- as long as the USB board doesn't drain the CPU too much (which unfortunately, is the case with the Spider). But there are things to come.
It should be performing very well on the classic Amigas now. I be will spending the next weeks in making the experience for MorphOS at least equally nice.
Enjoy -- Chris Hodges

AROS-Exec : Call for wall-papers
Due to a certain need for new Wanderer backgrounds, everyone is invited to the official "Call for wall-papers" at AROS-Exec.
The wallpapers should be placed in the AROS-Exec gallery and should have a minimal size of 800x600, images in multiple resolutions would be best.
Since there is no resizing of wallpapers supported in Wanderer, the image content might be aligned to the upper left corner, so using a 1024x786 background image in a 800x600 resolution would not cut any logos or sensitive parts.
All images must be released under APL and must not contain any foreign copyrighted materials!
The competition deadline is May 31st, after which a poll will be starting to nominate the winning image. This will be set as the default desktop background in the nightly builds. (snx)

"I have noticed game development for Amiga has seemed to stagnant and want to help change that, stated DiscreetFX's CEO. So begins a fun contest to sharpen your Amiga game creation coding skills. The three level demo you create will need to run on classic Amiga's and WinUAE/E-UAE/PSPUAE. We don't care so much if it is AGA or Amiga 500 specific. Runner up prizes will also be offered and the winner will get a chance to complete the game and release it on AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, AROS, and other gaming systems.
More information will be available at the title link in the next week. For more information about this contest please contact DiscreetFX.

IOSPIRIT GmbH (ANF)
|
IOSPIRIT GmbH quits the Amiga market
Press release IOSPIRIT GmbH ends its Amiga business on the 1st of April 2007.
In the future, IOSPIRIT GmbH will be focusing solely on its Mac®
products. In order to better serve the needs of that market and to be
able to process incoming orders faster and more efficiently, a
reimplementation of the shop system is currently being worked on.
The reasons for the decision to no longer operate in the Amiga market
are as follows:
- We want to fully commit to developing Mac® products in the future
- The big additional overhead that would be necessary to integrate (permanent) support for download and package versions of Amiga software into the new concept and the drawbacks that would come with this for the majority of our customers - which today are Mac® users
- The decreasing demand for Amiga products and the the situation of the Amiga market in general
IOSPIRIT's own Amiga titles will no longer be available beyond April,
1st, 2007 - except of course for remaining stock at dealers. The
future distribution as well as development and support of IBrowse will
be handled directly by the IBrowse development team. You can find
their website at ibrowse-dev.net.
Many thanks go to
- All of our customers and users for being loyal for so many years, which has made the development of our Amiga titles possible in the first place;
- All developer and scene buddies for the many interesting, reflective, funny, educational, helpful and amicable moments, anecdotes and experiences;
- All those, who have always been there to help with mental and moral support and an independant, second opinion.
We wish all of you all the best for the future and would be happy to
see you again over in the Mac® market. If you are interested in what
we are currently working on, you can find our Mac® products at
iospirit.com.
Sincerly,
Felix Schwarz (snx)

Updates for Hollywood 2.5 and Hollywood Designer 2.0
Two new updates for users of Hollywood 2.5 and Hollywood Designer 2.0 are now available in the restricted area for customers on the Airsoft Softwair homepage.
With these two updates it is now possible to use different charsets than ISO 8859-1 with Hollywood as well. This allows you for example to use Eastern European charsets with Hollywood. Furthermore, some bugs have been fixed and it is now possible to quit Hollywood without problems from a CLI using CTRL-C.
These two updates are only for users of the download versions of Hollywood 2.5 and Hollywood Designer 2.0. The versions that come on CD already contain the latest versions of Hollywood 2.5 and Hollywood Designer 2.0. All registered customers can now log onto the Airsoft Softwair homepage with their username and password and download the new versions.
Thanks go to Paul Bloedel, Lazar Zoltan, Rafal Chyla, Marco Fogli and Martin Cornelius for the bug reports. (snx)

Magazin: Retro #3 published
Since this week the third release of the Retro magazine is available in stores. An item overview is given under the title link. The official press release is listed below:
About Hackers and Heroes
The fascination of computers and the number of those who are using them full of enthusiasm was increasing within the seventies. Small groups came up which were even occupied with the world of computers aside the universities. Every new piece of software was examined, analysed and passed on.
Bill Gate's idea of a software market came to the idealistic hacker's world like a bombshell. It was the opinion that every programmer acquired his knowledge from others and only a free exchange could guarantee a further development.
Bill Gates neither wanted to share his knowledge with others nor he wasn't prepared to allow that his software should be freely copied and changed by others. Being upset, finally he wrote a so called "open letter" to the Homebrew computer club. In it he claimed the ones as thieves who were using and copying his software without any payment.
Retro #3 shows Bill Gate's original letter from the year 1976 and gives impressions from hackers' ethics and crackers' philosophy. Furthermore there are scenes of Wau Holland, being figured as a co founder of the Chaos computer club.
Additional highlights in Retro #3 are a special about soccer manager games and the history of the Amstrad/Schneider CPC.
About Retro:
Exciting, funny and a special sense for retro trends - RETRO
offers everything from the cosmos of digital lifestyle. The magazine reports from video games, hard- and software for retro fans, but even introduces people and stories in the background. With a regular view of events all over the world RETRO informs you of all aspects from the digital retro culture. Even a cd-rom is attached to every issue - full of videos, sounds and games from the retro scene.
RETRO #3 consists of 96 pages and is in stores for 9,95 Euro since March 20, 2007. A cd-rom with 25 video games is part of this issue. (snx) (Translation: tz)

AmigaOS 4: Software sampler Phonolith 0.5
Phonolith is a software instrument for AmigaOS 4 which plays back sampled waveforms. It is usable with Horny and other CAMD-based sequencers or just with a connected MIDI keyboard as well.
New in this version is the "Mixdown" function, with which one's own songs can be saved as AIFF files. But this only works with a keyfile. Since such are not sold yet before version 1.0, one can obtain them only through registering the Horny MIDI sequencer.
Features of version 0.5:
- downmixing to AIFF file (not for lite version)
- receives MIDI notes through camd.library
- mixer unit with volume controls and peak meters
- 16 different instruments at once
- ADSR amp envelope for each instrument
- unlimited number of samples for each instrument, for key and velocity ranges
- supports AIFF (16 bit) sample format
- imports Logic EXS24 instruments (only from Macintosh (PPC?))
- ReAction GUI
Planned features of version 1.0:
- mixer unit with panning controls
- WAVE sample support
- better EXS24 import (Intel format...)
- connection to Horny for automatic project loading
- control mixer with MIDI commands
- non-linear volume levels and ADSR-release
Further information on Phonolith can be found under the title link. (cg) (Translation: cad)
