Vampire team distributed pirated software during 'Vampire Standalone' launch
For years, a customized, unlicensed distribution of AmigaOS 3.9 targeting the FPGA based 'Vampire' accelerators and Amiga clones has been available on the net. The package comes with tons of preinstalled software - including hundreds of games and productivity applications that used to be distributed commercially.
Whenever people were criticizing this, Gunnar von Boehn's Vampire team was quick to point out that they were not involved with the distribution called 'Coffin' and didn't see a reason to act.
But in the days following "Amiga 34", where the 'Vampire Standalone' variant was sold to endusers for the first time, an increasing number of users reported on a1k.org that they had recieved a CF card with preinstalled Coffin OS from Gunnar von Boehn himself when purchasing their Vampire computer (screenshots (German): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).
When other users started criticizing this approach to launching a commercial product into the market - selling 32 Vampire units at a price of 550 Euros each at A34 should have generated sales of more than 17000 Euros in just a few hours - Vampire spokesman 'grond' explained that the team had to switch back to Amiga Kickstarts due to "ongoing boot problems with AROS" and had bought Kickstart 3.1 licenses from Mike Battilana (Cloanto) right at the show. Additionally, "H&P had given their OK" for the distribution of AmigaOS 3.9, according to grond (Screenshot (German)).
This would explain just a tiny fraction of the software actually contained in the Coffin distribution - the package has a total size of 32 Gigabyte and contains a complete collection of preinstalled WHDLoad games as well as many other commercial titles such as Cinema 4D, SAS/C or "Foundation Director's Cut" - but was probably meant to diffuse the main point of criticism: Pirating software still available from dealers, like AmigaOS 3.9, is generally frowned upon, even in the usually rather 'Abandonware' friendly retro community.
But due to our own conversations with Jürgen Haage from many years ago, we doubted even the claim that the Vampire team got permission to distribute AmigaOS 3.9. And approached by amiga-news.de, Mr. Haage did indeed state that he didn't know about the Vampire project and did not have any communication with the people behind it - according to him, nobody approached Haage & Partner to ask about OS 3.9.
amiga-news.de has contacted Gunnar von Boehn to ask for a statement regarding this matter and to see if he could forward our mail to 'grond', since we do not have a contact address for the latter. Von Boehn states that his team "considers the current legal situation regarding the OS as very sad" und mentions that "not even properly purchased licenses might not guarantee legal ownership" - we assume he's referring to the legal battle between Hyperion and Cloanto. Mr. Von Boehn did not address Coffin OS in his reply, but admits in a subclause that he thinks Vesalia is still selling AmigaOS 3.9. We did not recieve a reply from 'grond'. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Acquisition of Amiga: Summary of Mike Battilana's speech at Amiga34 (Update)
At the "Amiga 34" in Neuss, Mike Battilana spoke at last. On the timetable he was not announced as "Cloanto" but due to his acquisition of the rights from Amiga Inc. as "Amiga". We want to summarize the most important facts of his speech:
Mike Battilana underlined his efforts of collecting the whole Commodore heritage to establish a reunited company "Commodore-Amiga". Again he suggested the idea of a foundation as a possible legal form for a new "Amiga" parent company as well as to release the source codes of software developed by Commodore.
About all other plans he has to remain discret but probably he could help developers by providing free licences. To be on the safe side, he acquired the domain amiga.com twice - for the first time in the course of Amiga, Inc.'s acquisition but also for the second time from Vince Pfeifer.
He is not offended by AmigaOS 3.1.4 at all but he would have preferred to be released after the lawsuit. Besides, he thinks that it should be available for free because the developers also have not get any money. Finally it should lead to an open source project.
With regard to the legal dispute he has emphasized his interest of coming to an agreement and that he commnunicates with Hyperion's CEO Timothy de Groote daily and meets him on a monthly basis. They were on good terms.
With regard to P96 he explained that in his conversation with Jens Schönfeld a settlement has not been reached but he is glad that they talked and at least could clarify some details. Furthermore he pointed out that he himself would have never spoken about lawsuits. Instead, he would prefer to solve problems quietly.
He has also told how interesting it was having a look at the Commodore documents because the business processes in many ways were ahead of the times. His company has a large archive of internal, electronial Commodore documentation and communication but having an eye to the privacy of the parties involved it would be difficult to make it available. Maybe step by step the archive can be partly published.
Update: (18:23, 02.11.19, snx)
Correction of the final sentence about P96, which had been interpreted more liberally before. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Crowdfunding: Mechanical Amiga-500/1200 keyboards
Similar to the project, announced by the A1200.net team, under the title link the Australian Liwei Guan offers a crowdfunding campaign for mechanical keyboards for the computers Amiga 500 and Amiga 1200.
They are meant as replacements for existing keyboards because the metal carrier and the controller are not included. Additional to the US/UK keycaps also German ones are planned - other languages will be offered if there is sufficient demand.

Real-time strategy game: AI
Samuli Holopainen writes: AI was made for Christiandevs annual Speedgame 2019 competition where it became #1 in both categories of "Best Fun Game" (shared #1) and "Most Original Concept", in which AI scored the maximum score of 5 points. Overall ending however only at #3.
In AI you are in control of an AI sending Robots to kill Humans. There's a catch however, you cant control Robots individually, but you can only control from where and when to send Robots, and what ALL Robots will be targeting at any time and then Robots will themselves decide how to achieve it.
The version sent to the competition is not the same as this release version. This release version is worked a bit further, adding such features as Save Game (autosave), Upgrades, bug fixes, other tweaks, and the possibility to actually complete the game properly.
Notice, however, that this game does need a heavy machine, and no real AmigaOS 3.x machine is able to run this, AmigaOne X1000 or equivalent is recommended. Although if you don't mind a slower speed, then you could play this with some lower spec machines. In addition, there is also a possibility to make the speed faster for slower machines, but this happens with the cost of stability. You might be able to play this with for example lower-spec Sams but prepare for bugs then.
You can check a bit about this game (the competition version) from a video about all Speedgames.
As usual with my games, to support Indiego Appstore, this game will first be available only through Indiego Appstore. But it will be released to Aminet later as well. (snx)

Amiga floppy reader: ADF-Copy 1.012

The low level stuff is handled in the microcontroller which is controlled by a Java application." (amiga-news.de reported).
Version 1.012 provides bug fixes for users of OpenJDK - if you use the original Java then you do not need this update.

Web browser: IBrowse 2.5.1
An update for the web browser IBrowse has been released which fixes some minor problems introduced with version 2.5. Among others now also a native Javascript library is available for MorphOS.
- Updated Danish, Spanish and Swedish catalogs, by Niels Bache, Javier de las Rivas and Pär Boberg respectively
- Localised missing strings in spoofing preferences
- Fixed corruption in built-in MSIE User-Agent strings
- Tweaked the installer to make 2.5.x upgrades nicer
- The F5 key can now be used to reload a page
- JS: MorphOS native javascript.library available again
- 68k: Handle datatypes that expand 8-bit + transparent colour images to 32-bit RGBA (fixes our 256 colour icons having non-transparent magenta backgrounds in MorphOS)
- 68k: Full alpha channel support enabled for systems using CyberGraphX V51 or higher (MorphOS)
- OS4: Enabled 2.5 updates via AmiUpdate (exit IBrowse before performing any updates)
- Changed the default JPEG decoder swap memory limit from 1Mb to unlimited on OS4 and MorphOS
- Fixed NOTRANSPARENT tooltype being ignored for GUI images
- Fixed broken HTTPS proxy functionality, where incorrect hostname was used for SNI
- Fixed broken MUI 4/5 detection that was causing problems in TextEditField and preventing context-sensitive mouse points from working with MUI 3.x
- Added some workarounds in the install script so that it doesn't error with the MorphOS installer
- 68k: Now works again on Workbench 3.0, after incorrect requirement for keymaps.library V39 (Kickstart 3.0 has V37)
- 68k: Fixed crashes when external modules (e.g. codecs and protocols) fail to load for any reason
For owners of a license of IBrowse 2.5 the update is available for free. Users of AmigaOS 4 also can install the update using AmiUpdate.
A known problem are crashes of AmiSSL 4 on systems having a 68020 or 68030 processor without FPU. The developers hope that this bug will be fixed with the forthcoming version 4.4 of AmiSSL - but have to wait until it is done. Due to changes in the AmiSSL-API afterwards IBrowse 2.5 has to be adapted.

Crowdfunding: Updated 68k back-end for GCC
Currently the Gnu Compiler Collection (GCC) comverts the back-ends - this is the part of the compiler which creates the specific CPU code - to a new model (technical details in GCC-Wiki). The support for the old back-end model will be discontinued soon. This would mean that GCC 11, probably released in 2021, will not provide support for the m68k architecture.
In order to prevent it, at bountysource.com a crowdfunding campaign has been started which is supposed to encourage the developers porting the m68k back-end from GCC to the new model. Currently the funding target is nearly 3500 USD (about 3100 Euro).

Trevor Dickinson announces acquisition of AmigaOS 4 kernel 'Exec SG' (Update 2)
It's been an open secret for quite some time, now Trevor Dickinson officially announces the acquisition of 'Exec SG', the kernel used in AmigaOS 4. For some reason the news appeared in a blog posting on the Amiwest website, an Amiga meeting taking place in Sacramento (USA) this weekend, instead of a regular press release.
Press release: The Exec SG kernal is under development! Now the exclusive property of Trevor Dickinson, the Exec SG kernal is being extended and tested by a team of well-qualified developers.
Led by Exec SG Team Lead Steven Solie, the new kernal adds support for many features AmigaOS doesn't have. Among these are mutli-core support, GART implementation, faster speed, 64-bit support, and extending the RAM limit beyond 2 GB to 4 GB and beyond.
Even with all these advantages, the Exec SG kernal retains 100% compatibility compared to the former kernal version. This is true because these are extensions to the existing kernal incorporating the original work of Carl Sassenrath and the AmigaOS team in 1985 as well as the work of others since then.
So more Amiga magic is in store. What will it run on? Be sure you have an OS4.x machine to take advantage of these new features. Come to AmiWest to find out about when the next new machine will be introduced.
Update: (23.10.2019, 14:45, cg)
Matthew Leaman states on amigaworld.net that he's (also) the Managing Director of A-EON Technology Ltd. and as such can "can categorically state that A-EON has not acquired ExecSG and the information being referenced is not correct." The press release on the Amiwest site has not been changed or removed though, 24 hours after it went online.
Update 2: (24.10.2019, 14:15, cg)
According to a posting on amigaworld.net from Steven Solie, the claim that Exec SG was acquired by A-EON Technologies was a mistake on the part of the Amiwest blog author, Exec SG was acquired by Trevor Dickinson privately, not by A-EON. Shortly after that statement, the blog posting got updated accordingly. (cg)

Amiga Bootblock Reader 3.00 (Windows)
Jason Smith's "Amiga Bootblock Reader" recognizes, analyzes and extracts Amiga bootblocks out of ADF images. The Windows program recognizes 1716 different bootblocks and can launch disk images in WinUAE or FS-UAE.
Changes in the new version:
- now recognises 1716 Bootblocks
- Newly redesigned interface (mostly)
- Lots of little changes all over the place
- Includes boot pictures for many of the recognised bootblocks
- Can now use WinUAE / FS-UAE from any location
- Program uses PNGs generated by WinUAE screenshot function (You can create your own if needed)
- Fixed Amiga emulator setting defaulting to WinUAE
- It seems i broke .ZIP handling (containing ADF's) - fixed
- Fix: When ABR found a ADF file, the 'Boot Disk' button wasn't enabling for some reason
Known problems:
- If you add a String search that the program doesn't like it will refuse to scan correctly afterwards. Your string search contains a character that causes the scan routine to break, you will need to edit the search.brainfile file in a text editor and remove the offending line. (No blank lines)
- While i have endeavoured to make the scanning as accurate as i can, in some cases there will be some inaccurate detection

Under the title link John 'Chucky' Hertell has published the files for making the ReAmiga 3000 (video recorded on the Amiga34) just like he did it before for the "ReAmiga 1200" - which is a replica of the Amiga-1200 mainboard.

Amiga34: Announcements, videos and further pictures (Update)
In this news item we want to summarize all other news additional to the MorphOS for x64 as well as some further pictures completing the ones from yesterday.
In his speech Trevor Dickinson (A-Eon Technology) has announced an "Early-Adopter-Edition" of the AmigaOne 1222 which is based on the Tabor board (picture).
The price, including an "Early-Adopter" version of AmigaOS-4.1, for the Tabor board is supposed to be 400 Euro which corresponds to the announcement three years ago - but it is nether clear if this price includes VAT nor when it can be preordered. It is also not known what kind of limitations this version, compared to the final AmigaOS-4.1 version, will have. In spring the audio driver was still missing and the SATA driver had to be "polished". According to the comment of the visitor 'Skateman', all components of the Early-Adopter-AmigaOne-1222 are supposed to be working.
The new accelerator board Warp 1260 was presented together with the Warp 560 and further details explained: The board will be equipped with 256 MB Fast-RAM but which - similar to most of the 68060 extensions - operates only in the 68040 compatible bus mode, that means at half clock speed. Basically the DDR3-RAM is clocked with 800 MHz and connected to the 68060 processor via FPGA. The price will be 499 Euro, without processor. It has to be delivered by the purchaser.
Hyperion presented a beta version of Libre Office 5 which is ported by Hans-Jörg Frieden. Further information are not available so far.

Event: Pictures of Amiga34 in Neuss (2nd Update)
This weekend the Amiga34 is taking place in Neuss, Germany. For amiga-news.de, Thomas Scheller has taken some pictures.

One of the most outstanding exhibits was the x64 version of MorphOS, presented on a MSI-B450M-Mortar-Titanium board with Ryzen-5-3600 processor made by AMD. Currently via PXE-Netboot is started (amiga-news.de reported):

Besides, there have been replica of the Amiga 500 ("Project R.E.D."), of the Amiga 2000 ("A2K Black & White Edition 2.0") and of the AGA Amiga 3000 prototype AA3000 ("AA3000+" of the Finnish developer 'Hese' [older photos])):

Other presented systems ranged from a SAGE-II system (AmigaOS was developed on a SAGE IV) to an upgraded Amiga 1000 and an AmigaOne X5000/40:

The 23 offered Vampire-V4 computer (nine others have been picked up by beta testers) was sold out within hours.
Update: (09:23, 14.10.19, snx)
In a previous version of this news-item we mistook the photos of the AA3000 with the Amiga 3000 replica ReAmiga 3000. Photos and a video of the latter you can find in our follow-up news-item instead.
2nd Update: (09:02, 18.10.19, snx):
David Brunet kindly pointed out to us that the computer shown wasn't a populated exemplar of the rare AA3000 prototypes, but the extended replica AA3000+ instead. We appologize for our mistake. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Amiga34: MorphOS on an AMD64 computer
This weekend the Amiga34 is taking place in Neuss, Germany. Here the MorphOS developer team has presented its operating system on an AMD-Ryzen-5 computer equipped with a Radeon-HD-4650 graphics board (Twitter: picture, video).
Regarding the video Károly 'chainq' Balogh has pointed out that it is a very early version with debug output handele - actually this morning Mark 'bigfoot' Olsen got it running on this new computer, for he could not bring his older system. Therefore you should not draw conclusions from the length of the booting about the future performance.
Due to a PowerPC emulation, on the AMD64 all existing PowerPC and 68k programs are working. This is based on a new kernel written by Mark Olsen, which is running on the presented system completely AMD64-nativ in 64-Bit mode, but also on PPC32 and PPC64 processors.
The presented system only is a preview what a future MorphOS NG could look like; many components still are missing. On the demonstration computer a mixture of AMD64 and PowerPC code is used.
Additionally the MorphOS team presents an Amiga 4000 with MorphOS 3.13 on a - according to the description - Cyberstorm-PPC accelerator board with 420 MHz (photo of its processor), that had already been shown at Amiga32 also. (snx) (Translation: dr)
