ISIS

ISIS comments blocking of websites
On 22. November 2001 the Chaos Computer Club published that the Internet provider ISIS is practicing censorship (we reported about) by blocking particular websites. This was stopped this morning, as the company became aware of this situation. They said, that those blockades were a result of some experiments of one of thier technicians.

The company pointed out, that whatever they would do, they would be the fool, anyway. If they block sites people will complain about censorship, if they don't they are supposed to support radical right-wing content. ISIS declines this technical solution, which offers so much backdors that the expense can't be justified. (ps) (Translation: mj)

Programming: OOP for All with new Featurs
Marius Schwarz wrote:
Another week is over and again there is a new version of OOP for All (Object Oriented Programming for All or OOP4A). New possibilities now are statistical contexts and methods synchronisation. The compiler backend was enhanced and the documentation got one more page. You can find all this under the above link.

OOP4A offers an OOP interface to non-object oriented programming languages and it's language comprehensive. (ps) (Translation: mj)

Amiga Arena: Interview with Florac Roland (AmiCAD)
Olaf Köbnik wrote:
Amiga Arena - Interview Project
The Amiga still offers specialized application software solutions, today, but which unfortunately aren't widely spread due to small usership. "AmiCAD" is one of those programs, which is being developed by Florac Roland. This software is about an editor for creation of electronic wiring diagrams.

The Amiga Arena talked to Florac Roland about developing "AmiCAD" and regrettably it turns out again that there is less than few feedback from the users.

Florac Roland still is urgently wanting users to help him in translating and creating a guide.

"AmiCAD" really is an interesting software and ought to be supported to ensure further development.

Who would like to help with the German localization or manual might write to: Florac Roland (roland.florac@fnac.net. (sd) (Translation: mj)

PDA: AmigaNCP V2.2 Beta 2
AmigaNCP is an implementation of the Psion link protocol which is e.g. built into the Psion S3/S3a/S3C and Psion S5 palmtop's ROM. It's main purpose is to provide vice-versa nfs-like file access.

This small update (untested, due to lack of Psion), tries to fix the following two reported issues:
  • NCP_LinkRemoteRun() now allows up to 128 chars file names in EPOC32 (S5) mode
  • AmigaNCP-FileSystem now (hopefully correctly) implementes ACTION_SET_DATE; this should fix the "datestamps not set for backup" problems reported by some people
  • fixed file format for Amiga2Psion clipboard functionality (hopefully)
  • now sends a "Clipboard changed" message to the remote clipboard server when a clipboard exchange has been executed (hopefully)
AmigaNCP requires:
  • AmigaOS 2.04 or better (localization supported).
  • the IBM-PC version of the 3-Link cable.

CD³²-/CDTV-Emulator: Akiko released
The CD32/CDTV emulator Akiko for Windows is now available for download on the Airsoft Softwair homepage.

Akiko emulates a CD32 and a CDTV on PCs with Windows with the help of an enhanced version of WinUAE. Akiko does not need the so called extended roms of those consoles, it just requires Kickstart rom 3.1 for CD32 emulation and Kickstart rom 1.3 for CDTV emulation. The enhanced version of the WinUAE is included with the Akiko distribution archive.

The source code of this WinUAE version is available for download on the Airsoft Softwair homepage. Akiko is Shareware and the demo version has some limitations. (sd)

MIDI: Tracks & Fields now For Free, Programmer wanted
«It was ages when v1.02 was released and it was shareware (demo). Both authors (Anders & Dick) left amiga so Jonas Hulten has been updating it for me. As he has not much time for it he gave me the last source code so i can search for another coder.

As i can't get in touch with the first original coder Anders Larsson (also made far updated pc version) i can't upload the source for free on aminet but i can give it to a serious coder who want's to continue on it.

So if you are a serious coder and want to continue on tracks&fields please contact me and tell me what programs you made so far. You have to know assembler.

In the package there is a full registered version 1.02 and 1.04. There is a bug that comes more on latest version that crashes when editing patterns so there fore i put up the older v1.02.

- Warning. Backup your old preference as v1.04 saves also screenmode u use and it doesn't work if you change to another gfx card and use the saved prefs from the first card. This should be fixed if i find any coder out there.

History:

1.04
  • Used the 1.02 source instead
  • Ctrl F3-F5: cut-copy-paste only the column the cursor is on
1.03
  • Works on graphics cards - sadly the cursor looks wierd as a result.
  • Doesn't scroll several rows at a time when playing. This is good.
  • Removed writes to address 0 when config was loaded.
  • Minor spelling corrections.
  • Screen mode selection in config.
  • Scaling now autoselects the current position
  • About screen doesn't show up at program start

At the area of "AmiPics" there are many vivid and significant pictures of Amiga computers, cards, chips, mice, etc., taken by one of Japan's Amiga power-users. Really beautiful pictures!

Many non-Japanese Amiga users subscribed already to Japan Amiga User Group (JAUG) such as from Germany, U.K. France, Rumania and Mexico. So it is the time for you too to subscribe to JAUG (title link)! The subscribing fee is FREE, of course! (sd)

Textviewer: EvenMore Version 0.59
The freeware-textviewer 'EvenMore' has been published in version 0.59. With the plugins it is now possible to convert HTML to text.

Download: EvenMore.lha (585 KB)

Recent history:

  • Removed messy filetyping code. Created a plugin which allows filetyping, which can be easily changed using a textfile.
  • Created basic HTML2Text plugin.
  • Created a Linux manual to tex conversion plugin.
  • Updated all plugins with an extra PROC, em_begin(). This is used as a pre-parse PROC, and is needed to tell EvenMore if it is necessary to create a new memory space for the file if the resulting contents from the plugin will be bigger than the original. Older plugins will no longer work properly!

DVD Press Release on "Black List" Start
The German Vereinigung für Datanschutz e.V (consortium for data protection), short DVD, together with many experts from the fields of IT security and data protection found out that users of websites often got forced to use cookies, JavaScript or ActiveX, because there's no alternative version available.

That's why from now on the DVD publishes a black list as an official directory of such addresses.

"Offerors who cannot tolerate that users want to decide about their security settings on their machines indepentently, should ask themself if they realy are set up for the Internet future. Who thinks to have to punish users for their conscience of security by withholding his pages from those, did not understand what e-commerce and online services actually are about", said Karin Schuler, member of the DVD steering committee. Editor: CED PPC 4.21b for MorphOS
This is the official MorphOS PPC port of CygnusEd Professional 4.21. You need a properly installed MorphOS release as well as the original CygnusED 4 CDROM to install the PowerPC port, the 68k version of the program won't be modified. After installation you can still use the 68k version of CygnusEd if you plan to install it on the same partition. The updated ed frontend automatically detects if it's run under MorphOS or AmigaOS and uses the proper CygnusEd main binary. Please note that you need the original CygnusEd4 CDROM to apply this patch/ppc update. It is available from various sources including Schatztruhe.

Fixes: Current directory is now correct if launched from WB, the -keepio and -sticky arguments now work properly & printing shouldn't crash anymore.

SDL stands for Simple DirectMedia Layer. The SDL library is a cross platform library and offers functions for graphics and sound output as well as querying input devices.

The version modified for UAE currently only works under Linux, but there are some benefits from using SDL:

  • It's now possible to use UAE in fullscreen mode as a normal user.
  • The emulator can now be used directly on the console (with activated framebuffer), e.g. without X-Windows.

Game: New Demo-Engine for SOMS available
The new demo engine is better and faster, furthermore graphics have been enhanced and according to Silvio Kurze contains sound now, too.

SOMS is about an action adventure like never before released for the Amiga. Action devotees well be have fun with the about 100 different enemies, numerous screen filling final enemies and extended levels as well, especially if they get supported by 20 configurable weapons and the same amount of spells!

If the adventure devotee gets horrored by the above, it is to say that combats can be avoided by cleverness, if you deal with the numerous puzzles.

Also the role game devotees, disliking the minimal possiblities to equip the characters in action games, can knock down satisfyed! The variety starts with free naming of the 4 main characters, goes thru the continuous enhancement of features and capabilities of your own character, the detailed multiple-choice dialogs with about 100 persons, the sophisticated weapon system, thru the 10 characters with own tactics, views and goals of life joining the force one by one.

Chaos Computer Club: Censorship is being done
A provider from Nordrhein-Westfalen (German county) starts to block Internet sites.

In some sort of hurrying obedience at least one Internet provider in Düsseldorf (Germany), the ISIS company, has constricted access to several Internet sites by changing the DNS entry on the ISIS name server. Yesterday, the Chaos Computer Club got aware of this censorship effort.

On a hearing of the county government of Düsseldorf with diverse Internet providers it was discussed by what means providers would be able to block access to diverse outlandish websites, [1].

This was in main about sites spreading radical right-wing content, but also rotten.com, specialized to collect more or less tastily picture material from the Internet, was condsidered to be dignified to be censored. Rotten.com quote thier extreme photo collection, among other of of casualties, as serious dealing with the manor of freedom of speech.

Philipp Schulte of CCC Düsseldorf in view of this faint-hearted censorship effort said: "It is to assume that the still very short list of objectionable websites will increase very much in the future and other providers will follow the example of censorship outrider ISIS".

To use a different name server appears to be a work-around for customers. eg. 194.246.96.49 (dns2.denic.de), 194.246.96.25 (dns3.denic.de), 194.25.2.131 (dns02.btx.dtag.de).

The Chaos Computer Club's considered opinion is that censorship by technical means is not a suitable way to handle content supposed to be problematic. "The massive restriction of the citizens in exercising their freedom of opinion is beyond the pale", added Jens Ohlig, CCC speaker.

Though the hearing of the county government in Düsseldorf on November 13 ended 'result open', according to numerous particitpants, customers of those providers, who are in hurrying obedience complyed with the governments suggestions, on access to several sites instead of the original notes receive an 'informer form' [2] to announce Internet sites thought to be problematic to the county government NRW.

The county government's approach to filter the Internet offers and by this to attempt to establish censorship is a critical step into the wrong direction in the opinion of the Chaos Computer Club .

"Instead of establishing technical filters, which reconcilableness with the constitutional law at least is questionable and which technical implementation is easy to avoid anyway, the government authorities rather should focus their efforts to sponsor the loom of media competences. More important than technical methods would it be to emerge a social immunity for content thought to be problematic", added Andy Müller-Maguhn, club speaker, to the club's statement. [3]

To what extent other companies in NRW followed the suggestions of the county government, without being legally bound to, is being reviewed. (ps) (Translation: mj)

SharkPPC is not a development of ELBOX?!
On Sunday 18th of November in 2001 on the VGR-sites (title link) a very interesting news message has been published: The SharkPPC which was introduced by ELBOX at the fair is supposed to be nothing more than a relabeled Sonnet PPC-card. If you will have a look at the Sonnet-product site it will confirm it.

Accordingly ELBOX has not developed "its" SharkPPC for itself. Therefore the introduction of the SharkPPC+ (which is supposed to have IDE-controller, AGP-slot and USB) can be doubted. (ps) (Translation: dr)

Hyperion: Warp3D support for Permedia 3 and ATI Radeon
Hyperion Entertainment has entered into an agreement with third parties to ensure Permedia 3 and ATI Radeon support for Warp3D, effectively doubling the number of supported chipsets.

"We are thrilled to be able to open up ever more possibilities to users of Amiga PCI busboards", says Ben Hermans, managing partner of Hyperion Entertainment. "The Permedia 3 is around 6 times faster than the Permedia 2 and offers a lot more functionality including full OpenGL compliance. The chipset is still frequently used in high-end 3D workstations. The ATI Radeon family is undeniably state of the art with well-rounded 2D performance and top-notch 3D performance that is on par with anything out there in the Wintel world. Support for the Radeon family will allow Amiga users to enjoy unrivalled performance and functionality."

Hyperion Entertainment brings 3D graphics to PDA's
Hyperion Entertainment is very pleased to announce that it has finalised an initial version of its "Warp3D" technology, a mature, small foot-print, feature-rich yet very fast 3D solution for ElateTM/ Amiga DETM based devices.

Warp3D allows content-creators to effortlessly deploy 3D graphics on low-end devices such as PDA's, web-tablets and 3G phones and is the product of years of development in response to concrete performance challenges and 3D technology.

Hyperion intends to showcase the Warp3D technology by producing several PDA oriented games.

"A lot of the PDA content we are seeing now is a throw-back to the earlier days of entertainment software and whilst this is not necessarily a bad thing, we do believe that users would like to enjoy sophisticated 3D content on these devices as well. Our contract-work for LithTech Inc. also means we were able to incorporate extensive research and expertise in the field of software rendering which resulted in one of the fastest software renderers in the industry - the only viable solution on a non 3D-accelerated PDA. Add to that a highly optimised subset of OpenGL which is nonetheless capable of running industry-standard 3D engines like Quake IITM and LithTechTM and you have a piece of very compelling technology indeed."

Warp3D was already successfully field-tested on the SH3 powered version of Sharp's Zaurus PDA and is due for imminent release.

The technology will remain in continuous development and will be licensed to interested parties.
For the complete press release see title link. (ps)

Update for our show report
Since I did not talked to Titan Computer on the show, I called Michael Garlich, today, to be able to add the news from Titan Computer. The details described below have been added to the show report (title link):

Highlight at the booth of Titan Computer was a video cut software "Motion Studio" for MorphOS capable of reading DV format. The development of the software is expected to be released along with the Pegasos board by bplan. It was presented with a beamer what the video cut software already can do. Unfortunately it is not possible to port the software to AmigaOS, due to firwire being required.

More applications under development:

The office package "Papyrus" was finished at 90% for MorphOS and is to be ported to the AmigaOS 4.0 later on.
Candy Factory II, software to create vidoe titles, logos, and web images for MophOS. The created pictures can be imported by MotionStudio using an interface.
A MorphOS version of Burn-IT Pro (DVD burning software) was presented. Said to be finished until April 2002.

Games under development:

Beside of the above mentioned applications Titan Computer is developing two new games, too. "Rage Hard" is a 3D multiplayer shooter similar to Counterstrike. This game is being developed for MorphOS and the new Amigas. "Alien Nations" is another game for MorphOS and AmigaOS (PPC) under development, a build-up strategy game similar to Settlers.

Titan Comuter will port their current software product line to MorphOS, as much titles as possible. (ps) (Translation: mj)
