Announcement: New Amiga game WizardGrounds
For some time now I'm working on a new game for the Amiga. It is called WizardGrounds and it is meant to become a small RTS game.

Now that I've assembled a first alpha I thought I should announce it. There aren't many actions right now and no end, either. It is just a beginning and is still in development (that is moving not regularly).

For now it is only tested on my A4000 and under WinUAE. I'd be pleased to get a little bit of feedback (e.g. on which systems it is running, etc).

Enjoy it! (snx) (Translation: wk)

RP-Online: Law-court dismisses suit against Grokster and Morpheus-creator
»San Francisco (rpo).
An American law-court decided that the authors of the exchange programs Grokster and Morpheus are not responsible for the violation of the copyright done by the users. Because the illegally exchanged films and songs have not been saved centrally on servers of the software developer thus they are not responsible for the content of the files. Thus the law-court dismissed a suit of the film studios and record companies.«

Error in AmiChameleon installer script
In the version of AmiChameleon released on August, 12th (we reported) is a bug in the installer script. According to a user's report the installer script aborted during the installation process. As an entry in the startup-sequence must be done the startup-sequence wasn't readable anymore after a reset.

The new script now doesn't add an entry to the startup-sequence anymore but gives the user the information that an entry has to be done and where it has do be done.

If this error occurs to other users, too, here is the solution of the problem: Before the writing to the startup-sequence a backup of this file was created called s:startup-sequence.orig. Just give it back its original name and everything should work as before.

SN-EuroArchiv I: V1.6 published / DKG II-Status
SN-EuroArchiv I V1.6 is available on my homepage. You can now limit all statistics to one year or month to show only the whole statistic of e.g. August 2004. This limitation can be also linked with the "free choice gadget" which has been added in the last version.

DKG II-status: I only have to finish the buying of buildings of competitors. Then a proper test of the new routines of the real game (and not the debug version) must be done to see if it is all right. I think during the next seven days a new release will be published. If you want to know what features have been added in the new version then have a look at the status-website. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Olaf Barthel & Matthias Rustler

Sourceforge Project for "clib2"
"clib2" is a C library that's used in OS4 wherever the alternative "newlib" is not. Olaf Barthel has worked on this library for two years, originally with the goal of using it for the port of Samba 2.2.5.

In the meantime a lot more has happened: An almost complete ISO-C (1994) compatible runtime environment with fully available source code. It may be used with GCC (68k und PowerPC) or SAS/C. Whoever has problems with the StormC runtime library, for example, may have better luck with clib2 (assuming an adaptation to this compiler has been made).

Because such a big project is not without bugs after two years, Olaf would be pleased to have the support of more developers. To this end the clib2 project has been hosted on sourceforge.net for the past few weeks. (cg) (Translation: dm)

MorphOS Adaptations of MUIFind and Altabber, Devedie Update
The programs Altabber and MUIFind are now also available for MorphOS. Relating to that there have been some recent instances of bugs being eliminated that gave the current MorphOS version problems.

And so the graphic user interface of Devedie for DVD display by way of MPlayer has been updated. This may be downloaded for Pegasoshere , in the Pegasos Forum.

MUIFind is a search program taht has the option of opening the found data as well as opening the corresponding program.

Altabber works in principal like Alt+Tab key combinations under Windows. It also enables switching between programs. The way this is done involves separate handling of screens and windows, and the hotkeys are freely configurable.

Tales of Tamar at the Games Convention in Leipzig
The company Eternity will be this year at the Games Convention (GC) in Leipzig from August, 19th to 22nd with a small booth and show there Tales of Tamar as PC, Amiga and Mac versions. As special highlight a first view on the almost complete 3D engine will be given.

Furthermore, Eternity will hold every day a speech of appr. 45 minutes length in the GC cinema. Subjects will be next to Tales of Tamar the games development in general.

Within the context of this piece of news it is pointed out that Amiga version now, too, can be played as shareware. To do so every Amiganer just needs to download the game and the latest update and enter the word 'Shareware' as serial when registering. As result you can play some time for free and therefore test the game for three to four weeks before you have to pay for continued playing.

Every gamer of Tales of Tamar who visits the fair and comes to our booth will get registered by us and receive 50 rounds for free.

The Games Convention is for the time being Germany's biggest games fair with around 90,000 visitors.

Tales of Tamar is a round based PBEM fantasy, strategy & role playing game similar to Kaiser or Civilization. The game runs already on an Amiga 1200 with 8 MB RAM and Internet connection. (snx) (Translation: wk)

YAM: Nightly Builds / Webdesigner wanted
As a new service every night at 2:00 CET there will compilations of the current development status of the email program YAM be made which are then available at http://yam.light-speed.de/nightly for AmigaOS 3.x, AmigaOS4 and MorphOS.

It is particularly stressed that due to the automatization the created files are untested completely and thus, do not need to run stable or run at all. Those files do not include manuals either and might require system compounds which are unavailable to the public yet. There is no warranty given, use the files on your own risk!

Errors of those binaries may be reported to the bug tracker. When reporting, please point out if you are using an official release or a nightly build.

Further information is to obtain by the title link.

Additional the YAMOS team is looking for someone who is interested in supporting this project by contribute some help during the new YAM homepage creation. The new site will base on a Wiki engine, more precisely on the Mediawiki framework which is used at http://www.wikipedia.org. Further on the page must work with all common Amiga browsers and have a unique Amiga look&feel.

The Wiki integration will be done by the YAMOS team, therefore it is only needed to provide a HTML page which can be used as basis for the integration. Furthermore graphics are required also. The new site should replace the current one at http://www.yam.ch. (snx) (Translation: ub)

Individual Computers: Technical specifications of the new Catweasel MK4 (Update)
Under the title link you can find some technical specifications of the new Catweasel MK4, which is said to be released by Individual Computers in October 2004 and might be already demonstrated at the AmiWest on July 24/25. Since the complete list of new features is quite long, we are just quoting an extract here:
  • The most obvious change is the size of the card: With only 2.5 inch (63.5mm) height, it complies with the low-profile PCI standard.
  • Kylwalda built in: While the old Catweasel models always had their own floppy drives that were installed in addition to the existing controller and drives, the MK4 has the option of using the existing diskdrives.
  • Suppot for auto-eject drives
  • Hard-sectored disks supported
  • More flexible read- and write operations
  • Extensive timer-functions
  • All events can trigger an interrupt
  • Improvements on the keyboard interface: In addition to Amiga-keyboards, PS/2 devices can now also be connected. Not only keyboards, but also PS/2 mice are supported.
  • Amiga mice supported in hardware
  • Every signal can be programmed as output
  • Compatible with CD32 pads
  • Improvements on the SID audio part: a DC-DC converter eliminates noise and cycle-exact control is possible
  • Digiboost for new SID versions: As opposed to the 'classic SID' 6581, the newer SID-chips 8580 and 6582 cannot playback samples any more. This option, which is also called 'the fourth voice', is replaced by two sigma-delta converters on the Catweasel MK4, so the fourth channel is also audible with the newer SID versions.
  • Two SIDs for stereo sound
  • Compatible with 3.3V and 5V PCI slots
  • Two DMA interfaces
  • Low power consumption
  • Reconfigurable logic: The FPGA on the Catweasel MK4 is completely reconfigurable by the drivers. This means that a hardware update can be done through the Internet.
  • Drivers for many operating systems: The Catweasel MK4 is delivered with drivers for Linux, Windows 98(SE)/ME/XP/2000, Amiga OS4, and for Mac OS X at a later date. MorphOS drivers are available for a surcharge.
Update: (15:13, 18.07.04, snx):
In case of a temporary inavailability of the Individual Computers server due to maintenance scheduled for this weekend, there exists an alternative link at http://www.siliconsonic.de. (snx)

It is now possible to play old Amiga games on the way with the help of ports of the emulator UAE for mobile devices:

PAQuae is available in an early beta version which is an UAE version for the iPAQ. The Linux program uses the SDL-library and does not require an X-Windows installation. PAQuae was tested on an H3760-iPAQ under Familiar 0.7.2 and Opie 1.1.3; according to the author it should also work on a Zaurus.

Ismail Khatib writes the Amiga-emulator for Windows CE. A first beta version of PocketUAE should be available during the next days. Currently a support of the keyboard is still missing. You can only use the on-screen-keyboard of the PocketPC. (snx) (Translation: dr)

MorphOS: OpenTTD 0.3.3
OpenTTD is an open source clone of the Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe". Other than with the original game several extensions and new features were added, e.g. many functions of the famous TTD patch were integrated directly.

The most important change compared to the official 0.3.2.1 release for MorphOS is surely working network support.

Interesting changes at a glance:
  • network support for MorphOS
  • improved German town name generator
  • transparent station signs
  • show total cargo per wagon type in train details window
  • bridges on slopes
  • Galician translation
  • Extra dynamite, allow the removal of town-owned roads, bridges, tunnels for a popularity rating penalty
  • magic bulldozer cheat, that lets you remove industries, unmovables and town-owned buildings, roads and bridges
  • Enabled 'remove' button for stations
  • Cheat GUI (activate with crtl-alt-c) The game remembers if you have used a cheat
  • split canal/lock tool in two tools, one for building canals, one for locks.
  • make the HQ generate passengers and mail
  • made helicopters able to land on small airports again
  • display number of houses in town overview window
  • realistic train reversing
  • added water quantity level "very low", which is the default for easy mode now
  • various small improvement for the MorphOS build
  • alt + f now toggles full screen (alt + enter still works)
  • autorenew: autorenews vehicles if enabled.
  • news history window
  • larger smallmap size
  • Austrian Citynames
  • Polish translation
  • Danish translation
  • smooth economy changes
  • TTDPatch-style gotodepot.
  • helicopters get serviced automatically on helipad
  • center toolbar on screen
  • two new airports
  • Resizing the window in all SDL builds
A complete list of all changes is to obtain from the changelog.

The archive is downloadable by the title link. Additional some selected files from the original game (Windows version) are required. (snx) (Translation: ub)

IRC-Client: WookieChat version 1.2 released
The IRC client WookieChat is available as version 1.2 (353 KB) now. The enforcer hits are not solved yet but the author wanted to release the current state before he will go on vacations. If there are problems with the new version there is still the version V1.1 available for download.

Changes with V1.2:
  • Installation script added
  • "Perform on connect" support added. So you can join channels, register with nickserv, etc, automatically when you connect to a server. Edit the Group entry to change your connect script.
  • Support added for server passwords
  • No longer crashes when you are missing any of the three MUI custom classes that WookieChat requires. It will give an error message instead.
  • You can now /part channels and close private message (query windows) tabs by clicking the X button in the top left hand corner.
  • If you try to use a command that isn't yet supported, the "/" prefix in the line you typed will be removed and the rest of the line will be sent to the server. /mode and /nickserv now work because of this. This might help with future IRC developments too... i.e. when new commands become available on networks, the client doesn't have to be updated to support them.
  • Bug fix: when you were disconnected from IRC by either the server or by typing /quit, the program would go into a never ending loop locking up the program. Fixed.
  • Bug fix: When a server name was too big for its button, it created weird problems. Now when a server name is too long, the string is restricted to 10 characters. So hopefully multiple server support works better now.
  • Bug fix: Can connect to the Galaxynet network fine now.
  • Bug fix: when connecting to a server in a new tab, sometimes the previous tab you were in wouldn't change its selected state to FALSE.
  • Bug fix: No longer crashes if you load WookieChat without first loading a TCP/IP stack. When you attempt to connect to a server, it loads bsdsocket.library if it hasn't been already, and if it fails it gives an error message.
  • Change: Nicklist listviews are a fixed size now, so when the window is small, you can still see the status symbols to the left of peoples nicks
