Genesi set up new official website for MorphOS
Genesi reports at the MorphZone they put their official website for MorphOS to a new address (title link) to deal with the latest issues regarding the development of MorphOS (amiga-news.de reported): The new official website for MorphOS is now to reach at www.morphosppc.com.
Currently the content is identical to the former site which was available at the old address, but it should be redesigned soon.
This new website by Genesi is set up in accordance with Ralph Schmidt said Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck. He is still owner of the major part of MorphOS and shareholder of Genesi/bplan. A fruitful discussion with David Gerber and Stefan Stuntz regarding the future is welcome, but nonetheless development will continue.
The upset developers reacted on the launch of the new site immediately and put at MorphOS.net the following statement:
"2004-11-17: Genesi is setting up a fake website claiming they own MorphOS. By doing so, they
infringes on our copyright. Any version of MorphOS distributed with a new Pegasos is illegal since our contracts have not been
honoured. Licenses are withdrawn."

Text viewer: EvenMore update
New plugin supporting PowerPacker compressed files created for EvenMore text viewer. At the minute this will only uncompress PP20 files, with no encryption (PX20) and no passwords, but support for these will follow soon.
You will need to download the new EvenMore executable as this plugin uses a new plugin identifier "PACK". Any plugins using this ID will be run before the standard set of file conversion plugins, allowing any uncompression/unarchiving to be done. I plan to take the XPK support out of the main EvenMore executable and put it into a similar plugin.
I also may plan to create/adapt a plugin system for saving files, either with compression (PowerPacker, XPK etc), or maybe even saving as special formats (such as RTF?). (snx)

AmigaOS 4: RSS-Reader Xnet-RSS (Preview)
Massimiliano Tretene develops an RSS-Reader for AmigaOS 4. XNet-RSS shows
so called "RSS-Feeds". These are short messages as text as they are offered by e.g.
amiga-news.de or
amiga.org.
XNet-RSS can receive headlines autonomous or in cooperation with a web-browser, supports
RSS 2.0 and can be used further without being connected with the Internet, too.
In order to display the messages of an RSS-Feed completely a web-browser will be started
with the help of OpenURL.
You can find some screenshots under the title link. A first version will be delivered
to AmigaOS 4 beta testers soon.

Genesi: Pilot Program Broadened
As Genesi made known via a press release (title link), the second phase of the Genesi/Freescale Pegasos pilot project has been successfully concluded, and Pegasos-based ODWs (Open Desktop Workstations) were delivered to T-Mobile (Czech), MySQL and the NSCEE.
The ODWs are being tested in several server and cluster configurations using different operating systems and applications. To this end the Avalanche Desktop Reference Program at Jostens and Select Comfort and then Cargill, ePredix and Imation is expanded. The Avalanche members use a Debian GNU/Linux solution on Pegasos for the deployment as "thin clients" or fileservers as well as for general use.
Genesi made known further that the delivery of more than 100 Open Desktop Workstations to selected Debian, Gentoo, Crux, Yellow Dog Linux and MorphOS developers has concluded. Demo Scene teams also received consideration. (snx) (Translation: dm)

Test: Use of Solid-State Disks in Pegasos?
Ironfist of pegasos.org tested whether solid-state disks (SSD) may be used as replacement hard-drives in a Pegasos without additional components, to do this he made use of an M-Systems 256 MB iDOC (Disk-on-Chip).
The short answer reads rather like a reply to a question to Radio Eriwan: in principal, yes. MorphOS supports the hard-drive device without limitations (screenshot), but the open firmware doesn't, so currently one can't boot from an SSD hard-drive. (snx) (Translation: dm)

Amigift will not freeze any longer if the source list of the downloads is too big.
Additionally the NList parser was optmized and runs now something faster.

Spreadsheet: ignition
'ignition' is a spreadsheet featuring an integrated relational database. It is currently developed under AmigaOS 3 and will be distributed by IOSPIRIT. Ports for AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS are planned as well.
Approached by amiga-news.de, author Axel Dörfler explains that the program has reached a pretty advanced state - though import and export functions for Excel and Turbocalc spreadsheets are not implemented yet and the documentation still needs a lot of work. Dörfler is unable to announce a release date as he has a lot of job-related projects going on right now.
The current version of ignition will be demonstrated at the Amiga meeting in Bad Bramstedt (Germany) this weekend. Screenshots and further information are available under the title link.

AmigaOS4: Support for Anti Grain Geometry
As it is to read at the AGG website the Anti Grain Geometry may, thanks to Steven Solie, be used with AmigaOS4 now. The demos are expanded with OS4 versions.
Anti Grain Geometry (AGG) is a C++ based open source graphic libraray. AGG is not depending on a special graphic API nor on other technologies. Principally it is a kind of rendering engine which generates pixel data based on vectors. A detailed description is available at the project site.
Handling with AmigaOS4: For information about available targets type make -f Makefile.AmigaOS. To install AGG to the AmigaOS4-SDK call the following: make -f Makefile.AmigaOS install. To just make one of the demos (e.g. 'lion') type: make -f Makefile.AmigaOS bin/lion.

"Because of the absolutely poor cooperation of Genesi and because of the non-observance

distributed.net: PowerPC/MorphOS Overtakes x86/DOS, PowerPC/AmigaOS Catching Up
RC5 72 statistics show that MorphOS edged ahead of x86/DOS, taking 13th place, and now it's PA-RISC/HP-UX in front of MorphOS - but this is a system not in danger of being overtaken anytime soon, judging by the current blockrates. PowerPC/AmigaOS by contrast - right now in 16th place - is doing more blocks per day, although it's three positions back, in this blockrate aspect it's noticeably on MorphOS' heels. Updated AmigaOS 4.0 Software Development Kit Available (Update)
Leuven, Belgium - October 20th, 2004
Hot on the heels of the Pre-Release update, Hyperion Entertainment is proud to announce the availability of the updated Software Development Kit (SDK) for AmigaOS 4.0.
The SDK features include:
- The complete GNU C/C++ compiler toolkit, including the source-level debugger gdb
- System includes and Autodocs
- Extensive developer documentation and example source code
- An extensive set of contributed packages including pre-compiled libraries like libSDL, STLport and other material
The SDK is available for registered AmigaOS 4.0 customers in our download area. It comes in two flavours - the full SDK is a 63 megabyte download, while the "light" version with 41 MB contains all the material from the full SDK but without the contributed packages, significantly reducing download size.
As previously announced, the SDK will also be contained on the update CD that can be ordered from Hyperion (details to be announced shortly).
Update: (11:11, 21.10.04, snx)
Warning: The contribution packet 'STLport' has been packed in a wrong way and may corrupt the SDK's functionality. Therefore it is suggested to not install it. A replacement will be delivered soon. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Guru Meditation accquires right of the Amiga version of Directory Opus Magellan
Press release: Gothenburg, Sweden, October 20th, 2004
Guru Meditation and GPSoftware are proud to announce that they have reached agreement on the acquisition of the exclusive, worldwide rights to Directory Opus Magellan for the Amiga platform from GPSoftware. This legendary file manager that started on the Amiga will finally be coming back in a new version in 2005!
Dr Greg Perry of GPSoftware said, "We have been searching for a reliable company to continue the development of Directory Opus Magellan for the Amiga for some years now. After some false starts, we are pleased to have licensed the Amiga product to Guru Meditation, where the ongoing development of the product is now assured. Guru Meditation and partners have some exciting plans. We look forward to seeing their new product and extend to them our wholehearted support for their efforts."
Andreas Loong of Guru Meditation said, "This is an invigorating new venture for us. We are very pleased to acquire the rights to this brilliant program, which for so long has been an essential for any Amiga user. Directory Opus Magellan is a file manager unlike all others. It is the essence, the very spirit of how computers should be used. From the very first release of DOpus in 1995, many Amiga users have seen the raw power provided by DOpus with its unique concept integrating Workbench Replacement Mode, File Management and custom functions in one package. All of these functions have been refined and polished into perfection and now is the time to bring this masterpiece back to the Amiga."
Guru Meditation has entered into a contract with a UK based specialist software firm which will be providing the porting work and implementing new features. Work has already begun to bring the sources up to date for the new AmigaOS 4 operating system.
Guru Meditation & GPSoftware
Guru Meditation was formed late 2003 and started off very modestly as a reseller of Amiga equipment and AmigaOne hardware. In mid 2004 the decision was made to acquire the rights for Directory Opus to bring it back to the Amiga platform as the start of a new program of expansion to help kickstart the Amiga market back into life.
GP Software is an independent Australian company based in the western suburbs of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Established in 1984, GP Software develops commercial software packages and provides custom software development services to industry in both Australia and worldwide. GP Software has successfully developed and marketed software packages for a variety of platforms including solutions for Commodore business computers, many products and custom solutions for the Amiga including Directory Opus, GPFax, EasyLedgers and others, plus commercial products for Windows. The company now concentrates on software development and services for Windows, mainly with its flagship product, Directory Opus 8 for Windows. (snx) (Translation: ub)

WookieChat 1.3 Beta Released
The IRC program WookieChat has now reached version 1.3, this one is also functional under the OS4 update. WookieChat is a 68k program that also runs under AmigaOS4 and MorphOS.
The new version is not as stable as its predecessor, but since the author is going to spend some time out of the country, he wanted to get this out to the users so they could get an idea of the current development. Users of the current AmigaOS4-Version are advised to click "ignore error" when the Grim Reaper window appears.
A few of the changes:
- Bug elimination: After a /kick the nickname is stricken from the list of those present
- Use of dos.library for data concepts
- A server may be contacted with a double click on its name
- New pop-up menus for the name list
- Keyboard shortcuts implemented
- When a nickname changes in the channel it is also changed in private conversation windows
- The /away command now works right
- "Assign wookiechat:" is not needed anymore

Hardware hack: CD-ROM, HD and disk drive in an A1200 case
Update (26.10.2012, cg): Integrated article into the news item during database migration)
After seeing what Egon Kohlschütter had done to his Amiga 1200, Bob Wicksall decided that there
was a way to make an internal CD-ROM blend better with the original A1200 case. Egon goes into better detail on some of the
technical aspects of the hack so make sure you have a look at his report aswell. Here's what Bob's
version looks like:
The following is a detailed report from Bob, describing how he managed to fit everything (including the disk drive) into the A1200 desktop case.
Feel free to email any questions about this hack to rwicksall@rochester.rr.com.
First things first
I was able to find a spare TEAC CD-224E in an old Gateway desktop PC. I've also seen several of them on ebay. Just search for
Teac and slimline and you probably find a hit. The next step was to open the case and remove the top half of the RF Shield. After this was done I took my CD-ROM and started to eyeball the new location. I found that I could move the harddrive and place the CD-Rom in the back left corner of the case. All I would have to do is build a mount and cut a hole in the case.
The next thing you need to acquire is an adapter to connect the Mini-IDE connector on the
CD-Rom to a standard IDE cable. Again, you can find these on Ebay most of the time. Here is a picture:
Cutting and Mounting
Cutting the hole was a little tricky. Basically I put the top of the case on a table upside down and then placed the CD-ROM snug in the corner
so that I could trace the outline. This told me exactly where I wanted the hole to go. I then measured the location and transferred the outline to the outside of the case. I'm never too sure of my measuring ability so I drilled a fine pilot hole in each of the corners. Once I was sure
I had the outline as accurate as possible I started cutting the hole with a Dremel. The hole was finished with a nice wide file to straighten out the lines.
Mounting the CD-ROM drive was next. The mount was made up of three pieces that I cut out an old plastic hard drive case. The first piece is Z shaped, about 5 inches long and supports the weight of the drive. This piece runs down the middle of the drive, is attached to the back of the case and the other end rests on the motherboard. The second piece is a leg glued to the upper left of the case to support and level the drive. The third piece is simply a stop on the right of the drive to prevent it from moving when ejecting the disk. When the case is open the drive just floats loose but as soon as you close the case it is held in firmly. Here is what it looks like from behind:
Note: The mounts are supporting the case of the drive. They are not touching the door.
Note2: The Z mount is removable. It is held into place by three scraps of plactic glued to the 1200 case.
Moving the harddrive to its new position
I didn't want to lose the internal floppy and I was lucky enough to recover an old 4GB 2.5" harddrive from an old laptop. The Hardrive mount is made up of two pieces of sheet steel. The first is simple an L bracket bolted to the back of the case with two screw holes for the drive. The second piece is basically a hook with a screw hole. This uses the keyboard tray to support the other side of the drive. This of course means you have to unscrew the drive to remove the keyboard.
Note: The harddrive is just resting on it's mount. I had to remove the screws to remove the keyboard.
And from behind:
IDE Cables and Power
I attacked the power harness first. I had already built a replacement power supply from an ATX power supply so I didn't have to worry about the load. I hacked some connectors from an old PC and built a power harness to fit the location of the drives. The power is pulled from the floppy connector on the motherboard and split off to the floppy and the CD-ROM.
I could have folded the IDE cables but I found they were too bulky and I was already afraid of having heat problems in the case. I ended up splitting the cables by hand. It was actually easier than I could have imagined. I used a sharp knife to cut a small hole between each wire and then I carefully pulled each wire free.
I used an Elbox Fast ATA 1200 IDE adapter to get the extra IDE connections. I bought it new from Software Hut for the project and I couldn't be happier. Just stay away from the IDE splitters that stand virtically from the IDE connector on the motherboard. They don't fit under the drive.
As you can see from the picture the CD-ROM comes very close to resting on the IDE adapter. I had to actually bend the pins on the circuit board to make room and then insulate the bottom of the drive with electrical tape.
Closing it all Up
The first thing is to place the keyboard. It slides in without a problem. The harddrive can then be screwed into place:
The case is actually very easy to close. You simply hinge it down from the back:
The finished product:
Further notes
I'm a little concerned about heat but so far I haven't had a problem. I've left it running for several hours with no issues. I don't really like the idea of installing a noisy fan so I'll probably leave things alone for now.
Make sure you give the drive opening plenty of room. If the hole is too small the drive will bind up when you are trying to eject the disk.
I would like to add some additional things like a flicker fixer but my choice of IDE adapters has limited my space. I think with a smaller IDE adapter you could probably fit a PPC card and a Bvision video card. Since I will probably never be able to get my hands on one it's not an issue for me. This IDE connector does give access to the clock port so a future USB adapter is a possibility. (cg) (Translation: cg)

With some luck, E3B will be able to offer the first freshly produced SUBWAY modules. In any case, the current top product in the USB and flashrom market, the ALGOR PRO and ALGOR will be available.
People interested in USB on Amiga can get a first feeling of the power of Poseidon and E3B hardware on our demonstration Amiga. Both developers will answer questions on their products.
Aside from the current hardware products several prototypes from the development of USB for Amiga Classic will be presented. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Luciferin flashrom software update to version 1.7
Dear customers of the flashrom solutions of E3B,
E3B and Chris Hodges are pleased to announce the availability of a new
version of the Luciferin software for the Highway+Romulus, Algor and Algor
Pro flashrom equipped hardware. This new release can be downloaded following the link in the title.
It includes the following changes (V1.5 -> V1.7):
- Luciferin will not ask, if the reset vectors should be cleared after the
contents of the flashrom have been updated. This is to avoid having to
turn the machine off and on again when using the Permanent boot loader.
- There is also a menu item for clearing the reset vectors now.
- The AlgorKick program now also supports uncompressed Kickstart images
for users of the 1MB flashrom version Algor PRO.
- The boot loaders have been updated to detect the AlgorKick module and
call it directly, saving one reboot cycle.
The update has been made public, not only for the users that forgot to
register their hardware, but also for other potential customers to try the
software.
All users are invited to try out Luciferin (which was rated as superior to
all other flashrom solutions on the market), even if they do not own the
required hardware. Luciferin will operate in Demo mode then -- only the
actual flashing operation is blocked for obvious reasons.
Also, the comprehensive manual will give much insight on the flashrom
topic, and how it can make your life easier.
There haven't been any user requests in the last months, so we suppose that
the software can be assumed to be in a final state. Anyway, we hope that
you will enjoy this update as much as you did before. Thanks have to go to
the users for their support! (snx)

FreeWheel ver. 2.2
- added full support for the 5th mouse button.
FreeWheel 2.2 is available for download at the official FreeWheel page.
About Cocolino:
The COCOLINO PS/2 Mouse Interface is a microprocessor-based adapter for attaching PS/2 mice, trackballs, glidepoints and radio-controlled mice from the world of PC computers. COCOLINO can work with all models of Amiga computers. It simply plugs into the Amiga's mouse port. The COCOLINO PS/2 Mouse Interface is a full 'plug and play' device. No software is required for standard use. The enclosed software allows using two wheels and 3rd, 4th and 5th buttons available in many PS/2 mice and trackballs. The COCOLINO interface starts working simultaneous with the computer's start so mice can be used in the early-startup-menu (unlike the mice connected through the serial port). COCOLINO uses linear movement interpolation, which makes mouse movements perfectly smooth with any screen frame rates.
Info on the current versions is available in the DOWNLOADS | Cocolino section.
Update: (09.10.2004, 17:15, cg)
Until October 24, a special promotion bundle is available, containing the following items:
- 2 wheel & 5 button 4D Optical Mouse

MorphOS: Software News Summary
The current versions of the following programs have been compiled for MorphOS by Matthias Münch:
Likewise, there's a new port of the current BitlBee version (0.91), also from Matthias Münch. BitlBee unites multiple instant messaging services as well as the IRC protocol, whereby ICQ, AIM, Jabber and Yahoo contacts may be called up from an IRC program. The MorphOS version is at a beta stage, so feedback and bugreports are wanted, especially from MSN and Yahoo users.
Also an update of the Keymap Editor Keymorpher (71 KB) by Vladimir Javorski, has reached version 0.099. Besides bug fixing there's a new simple-dead-key conversion and a hotkey-edit mode as well as the use of NList classes for the keymap lists, which may now be used in hex mode. (snx) (Translation: dm)

Roslund describes that version as "work in progress" which holds several limitations still - e.g. for many gui options there are no functions implemented yet. (cg) (Translation: ub)

New AmigaOne firmware available
Leuven, Belgium - October 6th 2004.
In preparation for the upcoming update of Amiga OS 4.0, Hyperion Entertainment is pleased to announce the immediate availability of the much improved U-Boot 1.1.1 for AmigaOne SE and XE motherboards.
New features include:
- Support for multiple graphics cards. At this time the last graphics card (usually the AGP card) is used for primary display. Later versions will include an option to choose.
- Support for booting off a Silicon Image 0680 IDE controller. This feature has to be selected manually at the moment, by entering setenv ide sii from the U-Boot shell.
- New CPU support: IBM PowerPC 750GX is now fully supported.
A problem has been fixed that made the U-Boot environment settings unavailable when rebooting from Linux.
- Support for LBA48 IDE drives, i.e. you can now boot off drives that are bigger than 160 GB.
- Support for the new Second-Level Bootloader (that can boot Linux besides AmigaOS), to be distributed with the upcoming AmigaOS 4 update.
- Numerous bug fixes and improvements.
The new U-Boot will be required for the upcoming update of Amiga OS 4.0, to be released shortly to registered AmigaOS 4.0 pre-Release owners.
The download is available in our Downloads section.

MorphOS: OGG media stream tool collection ogmtools 1.4.1 released
ogmtools allow information about, extraction from, creation or splitting of OGG media streams. OGM is used for "OGG media streams".
The archive contains:
ogmmerge
This program takes the input from several media files and joins their streams (all of them or just a selection) into an OGM.
ogminfo
This program lists information about all streams contained in an OGM including information about the codecs used.
ogmdemux
This program extracts all or only some data streams from an OGM and writes them to separate files.
ogmsplit
This program can be used to easily split an OGM file after a given size. Several OGM files will be created that each start with a keyframe.
ogmcat
This program can be used to concatenate several OGG/OGM files into one big file if they are of the same type. Please note ogmcat is not fully working yet, since it's a work in progress version.
For more information read the included documentation in AmigaGuide or man format. The MorphOS port can be downloaded from the title link. (snx)
