GUI system: theme engine for NewGui
First screenshots of the new theme engine for the alternative GUI system NewGui can be found under the title link. The current beta version, available in the download area, already contains a coniguration program for testing the new functionality.

For users who want to create own themes a comprehensive manual will be available soon. By using the program DEEPVIEW that is part of the package should an advanced user already be able to follow this relatively simple process.

Special thanks of the NewGui author go to Aaron Diezman who made the first theme called "Sky" available. The NewGui version 1.4.5 is still in development, the final product will contain colour definitons for borders and similar things. (cg) (Translation: wk)

File system: NTFS 0.2 (Beta, AmigaOS 3/MorphOS)
Marek Szyprowski has published a new test version of his NTFS implementation for AmigaOS and MorphOS. The driver allows to read volumes which were formated under Windows XP/NT with the file system NTFS.

Changes in version 0.2:
  • It is mainly a bugfix release.
  • Hopefully all problems with large files are solved.
  • Support for fragmented MTF zone has been added, so disks used under WindowsXP should work.

 We have significant numbers to celebrate this month. The numbers are
4.0 and 1.0. Well, almost 4.0. What's significant about that number is
that this month sees the last release of Amiga OS 4.0 before the full
commercial release! That's a great step in the history of Amiga OS.
Your patience will still be tested, however, as the story below
mentions "a few months" before the commercial release will be ready.
 The 1.0 number relates to Win UAE. After more version releases than I
can count, the program has finally hit the magic 1.0 designation.
Congratulations are in order.
 While all this is going on, the Amiga community stays as active as
ever. We have several stories this issue on upcoming Amiga events. We
were disappointed to learn the budget for AmiWest will only allow that
venerable show to run for one day, but it looks as though it will be a
very interesting day. Meanwhile, our Nordic Amigan groups have their
own events to talk about. They sound to be just as much fun. Norway is
the land of my ancestors, so I'd love to get to both of those northern
shows.
 There are many positive items to read in this issue. We hope you
enjoy them all.

E-mail to the E-ditor:

 I am a former Amiga user who still tries to follow the happening in
the Amiga World. Thanks ( And congratulations on your twelfth
anniversary) for your efforts in keeping this alive. I am at least
aware that the Amiga still exists. But.. I am now confused as to what
the Amiga is and what it can do for the average user. Can you
possibly, in very layman's terms, produce an article that explains
what Amiga has to offer? I understand there have been numerous
ownership changes and false promises but somehow an Amiga product
still exists. I would look forward to a in-depth breakdown of what
Amiga offers and possibly where one may purchase these products.

Thanks  Bill
~~~~~~
Bill,
 Wow. You ask some very pertinent and difficult questions. In truth,
I'm not sure how to answer fully. What I usually do in cases like this
is ask for comments from the readers, who have much more collective
wisdom than I do.
 How about it readers? What can the Amiga do for the average user at
this time in its life? Please send your thoughts to
amigaupdate@globaldialog.com and we'll share them in future issues.
 My personal take is that the Amiga's role is now much reduced from
what it had been. Linux has taken on the mantle of the main
alternative to Windows, even more so than Apple. However, the Amiga
still offers what I've long considered to be the best operating system
available. It's compact, consistent code, with commands and features
that are not available in any other operating systems. As just one
simple example, I've long wished for something like filenotes in every
other operating system I've used.
 Amiga OS is also proprietary without being overpriced or suffering
from monopolistic practices by the company that owns it. If a user is
concerned about the liabilities often talked about for Linux and other
open source code, Amiga OS offers a good alternative. Keep in mind
that the core of Apple OS is now a version of BSD UNIX, so there are
potential liabilities even there. Personally, I think that issue is
considerably overblown, but the fact remains there are no such issues
with Amiga OS.
 Here's a web page where you can find some Amiga dealers:
 Brad
 NAF - Norsk amigaforening (English: Norwegian Amiga Association) - a
Norwegian Amiga user group acknowledged by Amiga Inc. founded in 1992
by me (Tommy R. Strand), is holding its annual NAF Barbeque Party
(since 2003).
 Mainly for all members of NAF, but others, especially from the Amiga
platform community are most welcome. For the first time this year, we
have people travelling almost 1000 km to the venue, and at the moment
we have 11 people that have registered. From past experiences, we are
expecting this number to rise to about 20.
 Please visit NAF web site at http://naf.as/ for more information
(sorry, Norwegian only). We DO welcome foreigners, especially for
instance those who we are in contact with on the EFnet and
AmigaworldNET IRC networks.
 Remember: This is a party with a high level of decency and respect
in the usual manners and is already known to be a positive part of the
existing Amiga IRC community.
 Don't forget: Time: Saturday, 2nd of July, 2005. Place: The city of
Mo i Rana, Nordland, Norway (The city beneath the Arctic Circle!)
 If you wish, on Sunday we will have a drive by car around in the
RICHARD DRUMMOND TO SPEAK AT AMIWEST 2005 BANQUET!
++++
 By special arrangement, Amiga OS4 developer Richard Drummond will
present the banquet address at the AmiWest 2005 Saturday evening
banquet! He is our **surprise** speaker this year! Here is a bio of
Richard (courtesy of AmiWest committee member Charles Pickrell) to
help you get better acquainted!
 Richard, our guest speaker, is playing a dual role at AmiWest this
year. He is representing himself and the excellent work that he has
contributed to E-UAE (the Amiga emulation system for
Unix/Linux/Mac/Amiga) and to the AmigaOS4 port of SDL (the popular
cross-platform game-programming toolkit), as well as representing
Hyperion Entertainment and the OS4 project. But first we would like to
share a little bit about Richard's background.
 The son of a police officer Richard grew up in Scotland and due to
his father's line of work moved often, having lived in many parts of
the country including Dingwall, Ullapool, Orkney and Glasgow (where he
studied Electronics and Software Engineering at the University of
Glasgow).
 In 1984 at the age of ten Richard got his first "real" computer, a
Commodore64 and began teaching himself to program in BASIC, and later
in assembly language. He claims he never wrote any C64 software of
significance, but rather used the platform to cut his teeth on
computing in general. Later in 1988 Richard moved up to the Amiga 500
and began programming in earnest on the Amiga OS platform.
 Richard's Amiga interest grew so much that at one point he began
writing for popular Amiga magazines CU Amiga and Amiga Format. When
Amiga Format stopped publishing their magazine Richard fell away from
the Amiga scene having lost interest in a "dying platform." He then
turned to Unix and Linux platforms to fill the computing void left by
Amiga. During this time, Richard met his future wife, an American, in
the UK and they settled down together in England."
 Sorry, but that's all we have time for today. However, more details
about Richard and his OS 4 involvement will be forthcoming. Have you
ordered your AmiWest tickets yet? Just go to
sacc.org/amiwest/press05-3.html, print it out, fill in the form and
send it in. You'll want to be there!
 AmiPodder version 1.0 has just been released. AmiPodder is a utility
for subscribing to podcasts (a regularly published radio programme,
usually in MP3 format) on your Amiga. AmiPodder will download each
podcast as it is published and then you can listen to the programme on
your Amiga or transfer it to a portable music player.
 Podcasting is a new Internet service that is just starting to take
off. Currently most podcasts are produced by amateurs but large media
organisations including the BBC are beginning to offer some of their
programmes as podcasts too. Recently podcasting got a big credibility
boost when Apple announced that podcast support will be included in
the next version of iTunes. With AmiPodder, Amiga users are able to
take advantage of this new technology right from the start!
 AmiPodder is freeware and version 1.0 can be downloaded from:
http://www.seal-amiga.co.uk/robert/amipodder/index.html
 I'm continuing to develop AmiPodder to improve the user interface and
to support podcasting standards as they evolve, if you'd like to be
part of making this software better, please join the AmiPodder mailing
list linked on the site.
Amiga emulator: UAE for the Sony PSP
Christophe Thibault has ported the Amiga emulator UAE on the Handheld game console PSP ("PlayStation Portable") from Sony (screenshot). According to our reader 'shad' the speed is still rather low (ca. 70%) but the compatibility seems to be quite high.
In order to use this emulator a firmware of the version 1.00 or 1.50 is required. Please note that the programm pushes up the processor rate to 333 MHz.
Status update: AmiZilla- and GTK-wrapper project
Ok, many people seem to think the AmiZilla project is dead, and with good reason, as there's been no information released in a long time. So I thought I'd put out an update, so people can see things are happening!
Ok, firstly, the NSPR (Netscape Portable Runtime) is basically functionally complete - this is a base Operating System abstraction layer (for things like TCP/IP etc). XPCOM (Cross Platform Component Object Model) seems to be mostly functioning - it allows different components in Mozilla to message each other, and access files on any platform, etc.
A couple of people have had the code compiling with these layers, producing an exe of around 500M in size (with debug info), which ran and exited cleanly, but requires an X11 server as a screen device! At the moment, we have switched from a static huge exe, to a library version (a2ixlibrary), but we haven't been able to do a complete build with this yet.
We're creating some helpful documentation on what files are needed, and how to compile an exe etc, along with some much needed info on how to set up a Cross-Compiling environment on Linux and Windows. This is very important, as unless you have a Dragon accelerator, you can't compile AmiZilla on a 68k-based Amiga, as they physically just don't have enough memory to compile it (you need 256-512M memory at least, and we won't even go into how long it takes to compile 200M of source code, on a 68k...)! It should be possible to compile it on an AmigaOne, or Pegasos though.
But more interesting, a couple of people are working on a GTK->MUI(Zune)/Reaction layer, primarily for the AmiZilla project, but it will be able to be used for other GTK apps too.
It's likely, we will be looking at getting Firefox running first (it's only a simple compiler switch, to compile either Firefox or Mozilla), then maybe the whole Mozilla suite if people want it (probably unnecessary though).
We're looking at getting it running on 68k/MUI first, and hopefully the 68k exe should run on AmigaOS4 and MorphOS as is.
Then we can look at MorphOS/OS4/AROS native ports. With a MorphOS port we may need a compile of the latest version of GCC ie: 3.x, to be able to compile AmiZilla though.
The GTK->MUI/Reaction layer will be done as a separate project, to make it easier to support multiple OSes (Amiga 3.x, OS4, MorphOS and AROS), but the initial target will be to get Firefox running on AmigaOS 3.x.
Also, an AROS bounty has been put up for a GTK->MUI(Zune) layer, so that it can then be easily ported to any other Amiga Operating System (if not already done). Also, the MorphZone bounty program is considering, either starting their own GTK->MUI wrapper bounty, or pointing it towards the AROS one.
The GTK layer will be done as two shared libs - glib.library and gtk.library.
So far, GTK->MUI seems fairly straightforward, as MUI is quite flexible, and fairly similar in structure to GTK- these both use an Object Model (ie: as in using objects like Windows, Buttons etc, not as in C++/Java Object-Orientated programming!), and GTK does not poke directly into it's data structures, but uses functions for object manipulation.
We've put together a basic working example using GTK calls, of initialising GTK (really an MUI call), opening a Window with a Button on it, closing the Window, and shutting the system (MUI) down. We've also compiled the GTK dev-kit examples helloworld and helloworld2, without any modification to their sources.
One minor problem is that MUI gives back a pointer when it's initialised, but GTK doesn't, so we'll have to save that pointer somehow, probably in per-app data, saved within the library structure itself.
At Sourceforge.net already screenshots have been published, showing the GTK-MUI wrapper under AmigaOS 3.1, AROS and MorphOS. Also demo code and compiled exes (68k) can be found there (Download, 33 KB).
GDK is an OS independent video abstraction layer for GTK - GTK makes it's calls to GDK, which then calls the underlying system (in Linux it's X-Windows). We haven't looked into it fully yet, but we shouldn't have to worry about GDK, as only GTK calls it, and Firefox shouldn't make any direct calls to it - and as we're replacing GTK calls with MUI/Reaction ones, GDK won't be called!
More of a challenge will be GLib- we're currently researching how much Firefox uses it, as some of GLib is very simple, and would just take a recompile, but other stuff like events, signals and threads could be more problematic, and may require replacing with Reaction/MUI calls.
More developers are always welcome to join us - the more resources we have, the quicker this will get done! :) To join the AmiZilla list, either send an e-mail or go to the website (but you need to create a Yahoo account to do it this way). Also, donations to help attract more developers, are most welcome too! :)
Today a new Amiga tool by Steffen Nitz has been released: SN-ListDatei V1.0. It shows a list of all files from one directory including all subdirectories in a single window.
This tool is very handy for e.g. HTML designers who work with several subdirectories. The file list might be saved as text file or send to the printer. There are also overview statics available which show the numer of files and directories and their sizes.
Furthermore The Altdeutschland coins page has been maintained. The Pommern Stralsund page became the most extensive page because it will be the Author's favorite. The page contains pictures of six differnt coins from the middle age from the city of Stralsund (located at the coast near the isle Rügen in today's Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). (nba) (Translation: ub)
amiga-news.de renews menu structures
On Tuesday, June the 21st 2005 a minor structural update has been made to amiga-news.de website to provide a more intuitive navigation and a better page overview.
The upper and lower menu bars as well as the right menu bar are affected from these changes. Now at the upper menu there are only links related to contentual areas which enrich the daily news. Among thme there are the links for the ANF, the Amiga Link Directory, the bulletin board, comments and the glossar. At the lower menu the amiga-news.de internal subpages were bundled, such as the netiquette, the news archive, the guest book, the masthead or the contakt page. At the right, temporary menu at the start page important Amiga related links are located as well as links to our sponsors and in future there will be an expanded article search section added.
Links which were removedfrom the old menu structures were merged into "other sources" and "sub pages".
During the next months the team will concentrate to the English section and is aimig to establish the service at a new domain with not only the news service but also a mostly interactive knowledge and test data base
If you have any suggestions or comments regarding these changes the team is always pleased to get to know your ideas. (nba) (Translation: ub)
Risc OS: Firefox port released
Risc OS teh operating system which was formerly delivered with Acorn's Archimedes RiscPC homecomputers and is - just like the AmigaOS and alikes - on it's long and stoney way to a new hardware.
Risc OS suffered to a problem which should be well knwon to all Amiga folks: Decent websites were only limited usable with the available browsers (at least six deiffernt ones!) due to lack of proper Javascript or CSS support.
Since yesterday Risc OS users may use a beta version of Firefox. In a recent thread at amigaworld.net the author Peter "chocky" Naulls describes some of the occuring problems and tehir solution while doing the port. (cg) (Translation: ub)
Team AROS: Bounty #31 initiated for a MorphOS wrapper
Team AROS has initiated a bounty for a MorphOS wrapper for AROS/PPC. Due to their requirements of operating system functions, three MorphOS applications have been specified as an objective for this bounty.
While both operating systems are quite compatible already per default - according to a developer some MorphOS libraries should even run directly like native ones on AROS/PPC -, this bounty aims at ensuring that all system structures and public structures of AROS have to be properly aligned with 68k alignment rules and that a wrapper or emulator takes care for the remaining differences between the operating systems.
Donations to this and other bounties are possible at the Team AROS website using PayPal. For citizens of the EU, James King is offering to forward the money to avoid PayPal fees for direct transfers into the USA. Donations must not be sent by credit/debit card on PayPal, though. (snx)
Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
 Long time readers know that May marks the start of a new publication
year for Amiga Update. We are beginning our 12th year of publication
with this issue! Hard to believe as I sit here typing this that it has
been so many years! How many more will it be? At this point I can't
say but the Amiga community is still here after all that time, and
still reading Amiga Update which we find gratifying.
 We have interesting stories from Amiga, Inc. this time around.
Clearly, games are the thing as far as Amiga is concerned right now.
That's probably a good thing as games should generate some cash.
 Our second story below gives some indications of Amiga's plans for
the near future at least. We'll have to see how they work out in
practice, but it's great to see plans being talked about.
 What are Amiga's long term plans? I don't think we can determine that
from what we've seen in recent weeks and months. For now, I'm just
pleased they're still in existence and doing things. As we've done for
many years now, we will have to let the future show us what's in store
as it happens. Since we published our first issue the week after
Commodore went bankrupt, we've been doing this for 11 full years,
starting on 12. We should all be good at it by now.
 We hope you enjoy this issue.
 Editor
 May 12, 2005 - San Francisco, CA; Today, Amiga, Inc. announced the
availability of Word Me Up, produced by Jerome Senay, founder of the
Boing Attitude team. This original production creates a zany
combination of action, dexterity and brain-twisting fun.
 Word Me Up introduces a set of cartoon characters, graphics and
amusing sound effects into a world of word-based memory challenges
that progressively scale in up to 60 levels of difficulty in four
different languages.
 Players can choose from 5 characters immersed in the world of
darkness facing the task of retrieving texts stolen by a bad sorcerer.
Every level is a race against the clock to collect the letters of the
word that opens code-locked doors. Along the way are a series of
endless mazes infested with numerous sorcerer henchmen. To save
humanity, users must find hidden parts, avoid drowning and steer clear
of raging elephants.
 "Word Me Up combines the fun elements of a medieval sorcerer arcade
adventure with an educational platform for effectively learning
words," said Vince Pfeifer, Amiga Product Manager. "Today, educational
entertainment is among the fastest growing segments of the digital
entertainment market."
 "We wanted to create a funny, skill-challenging application that
brings rich graphics and high quality performance across a variety of
portable devices. Amiga enables the cross-platform sharing of
binaries, allowing us to concentrate on content," said Boing Attitude
founder Senay.
 Word Me Up is immediately available for WinCE Mobile-based devices,
including PocketPC and SmartPhone, and will soon be available for
Linux and Symbian-based devices, set top boxes, personal multimedia
devices, set top boxes and PCs.
 April 26, 2005 - San Francisco, CA Amiga, Inc. announced it has
become a Premier Member of the Hewlett-Packard iPAQ Developer Program.
 As a Premier Member, Amiga gains access to development tools, source
code, pre-release tools and information and multiple opportunities for
joint marketing and collaboration at tradeshows.
 "We are pleased to welcome Amiga as a Premier member of the iPAQ
Developer Program," said Joel Vincent, Product Manager, Handhelds
Global Business Unit.
 The Hewlett-Packard program comprises more than 15,000 members from
109 countries, including 121 universities worldwide. While the US
still constitutes the largest block of members, a majority of members
are from outside of the United States.
 The original purpose of the program was to serve those developing
iPAQ expansion sleeves. The widespread adoption of SDIO (Secure
Digital Input Output) and CF (Compact Flash) has shifted the program's
main focus now to providing developers with finer control over unique
features of the hardware, especially new features that do not yet have
standard operating system support.
 "The breadth of iPAQ devices enable the consumer/home and
business/mobile users with extensive applications geared to their
respective needs," said Greg Sigel, Amiga's vice president of sales
and marketing. "The specific focus of each device, covering
multimedia, imaging, productivity and business applications mirrors
the development path that Amiga is pursuing with our developer
community. By gaining access to the HP tools, Amiga developers can
more effectively serve each market with the optimal set of graphically
rich, superior performing applications."
 After having recently launched its revised web site, on-line store
and a host of new titles, Amiga continues to pursue an aggressive
distribution strategy and product release plan of 12 new titles per
quarter. The HP-Amiga partnership is a key step to enabling handheld
users with premium content.
 1 May, 2005
 We regret to inform you all that the AmigaEast Show May 28-29 2005
has been cancelled.
 Many people and companies had expressed interest in the show, but the
money did not come in to support the $6000 needed to run the show. As
a result of not being able to put the additional $2500 prepayment the
time slot was sold to another event in the hotel. All the work and
logistics had been done, but too little money came in. There is still
a possibility one could happen at the end of the year but it looks as
though I would need to front most of the money myself. Anyone who gave
a credit card # in to order tickets for the show or banquet have not
been charged anything and any checks have not been cashed and will be
disposed of properly. I would still like to look forward to doing
another show in the northeast of the US and am open to ideas.
 1 May 2005
 From the beginning of the AmiWest shows, certain goals and objectives
have been in evidence. While those who have been connected with the
show are aware of most of those goals and objectives, many of you who
attend may not be aware or may be new to the show. So for you (and to
remind others), here are the things we are trying to accomplish with
each and every AmiWest show.
 1. First of all, we are providing a place for the Amiga community to
gather. This gathering takes place from among a worldwide community of
manufacturers, developers, users, retailers, and others interested in
our great Amiga computers. Old friendships are renewed and new friends
are made among the many attendees at AmiWest. Organized user groups
are especially encouraged to come and exhibit through a user group
special rate policy detailed on our website. (see
www.sacc.org/amiwest/exhibform.html#pricing)
 2. Second, we provide a place for breaking news announcements of
interest to the Amiga community. Companies who are part of the Amiga
marketplace have always sent their representatives to announce
significant developments.
 3. Third, we provide an encouraging, peaceful atmosphere where even
those in conflict can come, bury the hatchet, and meet in a
high-energy environment for exchange of ideas. We tell those that are
in conflict, legally or otherwise, to please leave their conflicts for
other arenas.
 4. Fourth, we provide a place where vendors can come to sell the
latest and greatest Amiga technologies as well as some of the best
tried and true Amiga hardware and software. Each has its advocates and
we support the efforts of our vendors who support our show and make it
possible.
 5. Fifth, we try to be as educational as possible along the way.
We're working on a few surprises this year as we try to do every year.
We're also continuing our practice of giving qualified presenters a
platform to demonstrate what the Amiga can do.
 For 2005, our theme is "AMIGA at 20: Past, Present and Future," in
honor of John Zacharias. Keep watching our webpage (with brilliant new
graphics) at sacc.org/amiwest and these continuing information
releases for further information, including our 2005 exhibitor list
and our 2005 banquet speaker!
 AmiWest 2005 will be July 23th and 24th, 2005, at the
 Andreas Loong, Proprietor of GuruMeditation, has stated:
 "We would consider sponsoring development of hardware drivers for
OS4, whether it be PCI, clockport or Zorro based. So I'll make this a
general call to developers: If you can make a driver, let me know and
I'll send you the required hardware."
 We feel drivers are inherently important to a platform as a whole,
and AmigaOS 4 currently covers alot of audio and video drivers, and a
good number of IDE controllers.
 If you have written drivers before, or if you are an experienced
programmer, this is an excellent opportunity for you.
 If you can make a driver for AmigaOS 4, we are prepared to ship you
the card that you need.
 It should be in C, it should follow the new AmigaOS interface
guidelines, and it should be portable. It must not be a port of a GPL
driver, or a proprietary driver. Check with us if you are uncertain.
their computers with the DRAGON 1200, a ColdFire-based accelerator
card combined with the PCI/AGP Expansion busboard. D-BOX 1200 allows
also using other busboards like Mediator PCI 1200 SX, Mediator PCI
1200 LT4, Mediator PCI 1200 or Zorro IV with Mediator PCI ZIV.
 After all of the amazing Amiga chassis designs that Elbox released in
the past few years, the D-BOX 1200 includes the first chassis with the
movable back bracket bays born after extensive research and
development by the Elbox engineers.
 The D-BOX 1200 is much more performance-oriented and versatile than
all previous towers for Amiga 1200 computers. Standard features such
as four 5.25in drive bays, five 3.5in drive bays, and a chassis
prepared to perfectly fit A1200 motherboard with many different PCI
and Zorro busboards are combined with new elements like USB ports in
the front panel or a movable front cover bay for CD-ROM. D-BOX 1200
tower system with a powerful 350W ATX PSU is ready for massive
expandability of your A1200 hardware.
 D-BOX 1200 replaces the discontinued Mirage 1200 and E/BOX 1200 (also
known as A1200 Power Tower and A1200 Winner Tower) Amiga tower
systems.
 Pricing and availability
 The D-BOX 1200 Tower will be on sale from early June 2005 at the
suggested retail price of only EUR 149.95 or US$194.95 (VAT and local
taxes excl.)
As announced one week ago, the Amiga-User-List has now been extended for address details. For this purpose, the list of countries is additionally devided up into federal states for Austria, Germany and the United States of America. Details about the street, postal code and city can be entered on a new page.
What is the GAUHPIL?
The GAUHPIL (Geographical Amiga Users Home Page Internet List) is a public MySQL based database created and moderated by Dietmar Knoll. Pegasos: CD32-Live-CD Released via BitTorrent
Marcel 'Frostwork' Unbehaun has released Pegasos software for making your own CD32-Live-CDs. This may be downloaded from pegasos.org via BitTorrent.
The archive only needs a CD32 ISO image of your choice named "cd32.iso" as well as a CD32 Kickstart ROM image named "cd32.rom" in the main directory and then burn it all to CD.
On top of that the CD contains the 3D-Ego-Shooter Aleph One and several emulators (inc. MAME, Sega, Nintendo, and C64). Aleph One requires some additional files that are available by clicking on the previous "Aleph One" link. The emulators require the desired games as well as the BIOS or Kickstart image corresponding to the system.
More information may be found in the instructions in the archive as well as the related MorphZone thread.
The CD32-Live-CD has only been tested on Pegasos II computers so far, the results on Pegasos I are not yet available.
  • Arggggggg found a very bad bad in passwords saving. All 1.1 archives are not compatible anymore
  • Changed RNG function: now it is a KISS one with a sha1-ed randomly generated seed
  • Some minor changes
Package management system: APMS
With "Amiga Package Management System" (APMS) David Pitcher releases a clone of the known from the Unix world package manager like RPM or apt-get. APMS should assist users while installation or upgrade of software packages:
The program recognizes dependencies (application X requires library Y) and manages the download and installation of all required archives.
In a later phase APMS will introduce an Amiga specific format, also mechanisms to transmit bug reports to a central data base are planned. Additionally support of further platforms (beside AmigaOS 4) and servers (beside os4depot.net) is thought of.
The first version of APMS still has several bugs and is partly incomplete:
  • Install, uninstall and update do not work yet
  • Loads of debug output
  • The program does not show verbose status information
  • Before download the (os4depot.net-) category must be selected by hand
For all interested ones there is a mailing list at yahoo groups available. (cg) (Translation: ub)
After registering and filling in name and country, one can already browse the new "Amiga-User-List". Furthermore, the introduction of additional address information is prepared.
The GAUHPIL (Geographical Amiga Users Home Page Internet List) is a MySQL based database created and moderated by Dietmar Knoll. It contains website addresses of Amiga users, that can be questioned by continent and country. Additionally, it features a flexible search function.
Currently, the GAUHPIL lists 702 users from 38 countries. Again, lots of broken links have been removed. (snx)
Feelin: Update of the object oriented system to version 9.0
Olivier Laviale's open source project 'Feelin', an object orientated system for AmigaOS, is now available in version 9.0 (screenshot).
The system consists of two compounds: the completely assembler written feelin.library as core as well as an expandable system to create graphical user interfaces. Even there is a set of classes aiming at the latter purpose delivered with Feelin it is not limited to such use.
With the update there are now 20 new classes (76 all together), additionally the website is extended with many autodocs, three more screenshots and forum.
Download: feelin050517.lha (814 KB)
Complete list of changes:
Feelin is an object-oriented system (OOS) for the AmigaOS. It provides two things: A small shared library, fast and powerful (the object-system's core), offering everything needed to create a complete object-oriented environement. And an extensible system to create and maintain GUIs. Although Feelin comes with a lot of GUI oriented classes, Feelin is not limited to that, and can be used for a variety of projects.
New preference item standard
Preference items are now defined in a CSS style format e.g. $button-frame (note well the dollar sign). The preference system has been partially rewritten and is now even more efficient.
Preview / Pop / Adjust
Created an adjust system with two new base classes FC_Adjust and FC_Preview. All previous adjust and pop classes are now subclasses of those two. FC_Adjust and FC_Preview subclasses are very modular, it's so simple now to create preview, popup and adjust classes.
Documents: XML / HTML
FC_XMLApplication has been split to create FC_XMLObject. FC_XMLDocument has been split to create FC_Document, which is now the base class for documents interpreting. FC_HTMLDocument is one of its new subclass. As FC_XMLDocument is used to parse XML code, FC_HTMLDocument can be used to parse HTML code (which is less formal).
XMLObjects
Feelin is not only able to create whole applications from XML files, but is now also able to create XML objects anywhere in your applications (and classes) very easily! For example, all groups used by the preference editor are generated from XML files.
XMLApplications was a first step in the separation between code and GUI, now the user can do WHAT HE WANTS with its GUI.
FC_PreferenceGroup totally rewritten
ALL preference groups (group objects used by the preference editor to adjust preferences) are now using XMLObjects! XML files are available in the "Feelin:XMLSources/Feelin/Preferences" directory.
Only ONE tiny little line of code is needed to create a preference group! It was already very easy to create preference groups, now everything is AUTOMATIC! Thanks to the new preference items standard (e.g. $button-frame), the XML support and the FPreferenceScript type the whole preference process (object generation, loadin, saving and object disposal) is TOTALY AUTOMATIC!
A LOT of preference items have been added to a LOT of classes, making the GUI EXTREMELY configurable.
Layout & Rendering
At last, FC_ImageDisplay is capable of drawing GRADIENTS. This awaited improvement make the GUI really nice and soft.
Feelin GUI is now powered by a new layout rethinking system, the fourth and the last (I hope), it's just fabulous! Rethink requests are now buffered, even if 20 rethinks are requested, only 1 redraw is performed! And as usual only modified objects are updated.
Window expansion is nicer now. The window is expanded from all sides, thus a centered window expanding remains centered, instead of expanding only to the left and the bottom.
FC_Area and FC_Window are now subclasses of FC_Frame, which now handles the FA_Back on its own making refreshing just perfect. The complex refresh mode has been improved and is now fabulous!
Events
The new event code FV_EVENT_BUTTON_WHEEL of class FF_EVENT_BUTTON has been added and can be used to react on mouse wheel. Most classes are now using this nice feature. In fact, eveything that can be adjusted with the mouse can also be adjusted with mouse wheel e.g. lists, sliders, proportionals, cycles, event group pages!
Dialogs
Subclass of FC_Window, the new FC_Dialog class can be used to create a lot of commom requesters e.g. "Ok", "Yes | No", "Save | Use | Cancel"... Custom objects can be added very easily making dialog window fully customizable e.g. FC_PreferenceEditor is now a subclass of FC_Dialog.
FC_List
FC_List has been particuliarly updated and is now become as powerful as configurable. Column format is now defined in XML and a lot of features are available.
With, 20 new classes (76 classes available), I've done my best to offer a more complete, powerful and pleasant framework for Amiga developers; and an attractive GUI for users that like customizing A LOT. (snx) (Translation: ub)
