Instant Messenger: Jabberwocky 1.8b7 (Beta)
Jabberwocky is a MUI-based Instant-Messaging-Client which can access different Messenging-Networks (e.g. AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo) with so called server moduls. Jabberwocky is available for AmigaOS 3 and 4 and the MorphOS-version will follow soon.

Changes since the last beta version:
  • Added NFloattext.mcc to the reuirements listed in the Jabberwocky guide.
  • Added alternative check for TextInput.mcc if vapor_toolkit.library is missing. Textinput.mcc crashes if checked by MUI without the vapor_toolkit.library installed and available.
  • Added a check for the presence of NFloattext.mcc so Jabberwocky won't crash if it's missing.
  • Updated OS4 makefiles and Jabberwocky include files to compile with new OS4 SDK (Now defaults to linking with newlib.library instead of clib2).
  • Corrected the asynchronous command execution for OS4 to prevent unwanted closing of error output filehandle. (Doesn't apply to OS3 or MOS)
  • Improved sourcecode by eliminating some unused variables, adding function prototypes, correcting some character declarations, making type casting corrections & added some missing default function return values.

  • fix: resload_Decrunch/LoadFileDecrunch could corrupt vital memory which could lead to strange WHDLoad errors (e.g. "Function ... requires slave version 1"), reported for game Universe, thanks to KillerGorilla for report and Psygore for diagnostics; the old RNC1 format is now properly supported for overlapping source and destination
  • new: on ChkBltSize/S some basic initialization in blitter line mode are checked too (68060 only)
  • new: option FullChip/S to save/restore the full chip memory instead only the area specified in the Slave
  • new: finnish translation of documentation, thanks to Mikko Heinonen
  • chg: cpu detection routine reworked to correctly detect an 68020 on boards with 'FPU logic error', 68851 and 68040/60 FPU detection improved
  • new: workaround added to make WHDLoad running on the CDTV, the cdtv.device will be disabled to avoid problems with interrupts generated by this, thanks to jtorrance and Toni Wilen
  • new: commands BKPT and BELL added to resload_Patch/Seg to set a breakpoint (enter freezer) and show a visual bell
  • chg: handling of the internal directory cache for resload_Examine/ ExNext changed, so that new created files will not be the the first entry in the directory this fixes problems with programs which do not correctly perform a Examine before each directory scan, e.g. Castles2 (JOTD)
  • chg: some more info output and better lace support with SP (saving picture)
  • chg: check for free stack space on entering WHDLoad via resload/ interrupt/exception made more consistent
  • chg: many changes on WHDLoadGCI, can export Slave/Memory now
  • new: danish translation of documentation, thanks to Nicolai Mortensen
  • new: macro PL_NOPS added to whdload.i (bippym)
  • chg: improved error messages if loading kickstart fails
  • chg: changed CPU detection to avoid problems with weired MMU configuration, no longer uses transparent translation to avoid Enforcer hits (Fabio Cinus)
  • chg: its no longer possible to load files from outside the data directory, that means that file specs containg a ':' or '//' or starting/ending with a '/' are prohibited, these files were anyway never PreLoad-able
  • new: support for multiple data directories added
  • new: options SavePath/K and SaveDir/K added to let WHDLoad redirect all write operations to a different disk location
  • new: WHDLoad now remembers if PreLoad has loaded all files and then doesn't switch when a resload function tries to load a non existing file (e.g. resload_GetFileSize)
  • chg: resload_ListFiles now supports a buffer in ExpMem too (JOTD)
  • chg: autodocs revised, html transformation added

Programming language: News about AmiBlitz
In two threads (1, 2) on amiforce.de several developers discussed the future of the programming language. Clearing the AmiBlitz-syntax, linking to GCC and renaming the project were some of the topics.

One thing has been already changed: Users of AmiBlitz can now save their source files as ASCII-files. Therefore the complete AmiBlitz source code is available as SVN-Repository.

Furthermore soon the official website of the AmiBlitz project will use the open source solution Joomla which would make it more easy to integrate it with the SVN-Repository but which also would make it not compatible with browsers available for AmigaOS 3. THerefore the webmaster Jens "bruZard" Henschel asked in a poll for feedback of the users.

In his basic.blog Henschel told about developments from the world of the Blitz-Derivate: Additionally to AmiBlitz he gave detailed information about BlitzMax with which applications and games for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X can be developed. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Amiga Future: update of the article database
Press release: We have worked on the extension of the Amiga Future database for the past months. By now it contains about 3000 articles for online reading. This week we added some workshops and an up-to-date article about astronomy photography by Mirko Strauß.

To extend the database even further we are looking for English and German articles. There were lots of websites offering reviews and workshops - unfortunately, many of them diappeared together with their valuable content. We would like to offer this kind of information online again.

Have you made a website with such articles which isn't online anymore? Or did you write something yourself? Then please contact us at the editorial office. (cg) (Translation: cg)

MorphOS: Port of Origyn Web Browser
Fabien "Fab" Coeurjoly has ported the Origyn Web Browser to MorphOS (screenshot). The most important features of the MorphOS-version:
  • Based on GaleKid 1.0 OWB Branch (December 2008)
  • Javascript, CSS, DOM, SVG, Unicode, SSL, ...
  • Antialiased fonts and kerning, font families and support for international charsets
  • MUI Interface
  • Cairo technology !!1
  • Multiple tabs and windows
  • Download manager
  • Bookmarks (including import for IBrowse bookmarks)
  • Fastlinks
  • Context menus
  • Copy/Cut/Paste
  • Rexx port (openurl support)

Coeurjoly recommends MorphOS 2 but the browser works under MorphOS 1.4.x as well - this requires a new (2007) MUI-version. OWB requires at least 35 MB RAM. Efika-owners who would like to have version without SVG-support (which saves much memory) please contact the author.

Starting OWB for the first time it tries to set the index which can take some minutes.

You can get further information about the MorphOS-version of the Origyn Web Browser in the News on morphzone.org. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Installer 1.19, Meridian 3.10, MMKeyboard 4.10, IRComRemote 3.10
Guido "Geit" Mersmann has published updates of several tools:

MMKeyboard 4.10, Meridian 3.10, IRComRemote 3.10

The multimedia-keyboard-driver MMKeyboard (AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, UAE, Amithlon), the mouse-gestures-commodity Meridian (AmigaOS 3/4 und MorphOS) as well as the infrared driver package IRCom/IRComRemote (AmigaOS 3 and MorphOS) are now optimized and improved and support now the title line plugins of MorphOS 2.x (screenshot). So an optional popup is available on each screen. MorphOS 1.4.x is supported.

Installer 1.19

Installer is a replacement for the original installation utility provided by AmigaOS (screenshot). Please note that this is the first official release of the new installer. It was tested with hundreds of scripts under MorphOS but should work under AmigaOS 3 as well.

The author has supposed that the AmigaOS 4-version does not work correctly because of a MUI-problem. He cannot find the problem and because he has not got OS4-hardware he will stop searching it. Under AmigaOS 4 the AmigaOS 3-version can be installed - if should work this you can try the PPC-version.

If there should be any problems with the installer scripts then please contact Mersmann with a Mail with screenshot. (cg) (Translation: dr)

MorphOS: Firewire-Stack Helios 0.1.162
Guillaume "Yomgui" Roguez has published a first version of his recently announced Firewire-Stack for MorphOS. Currently "Helios" has the following limitations:

  • Asynchrone mode limitations: Ping request not supported, Lock request/response not supported
  • No bus management yet (to support the isochrone mode)
  • FWInspect shows only the first PCI OHCI1394 bridge found on the host
  • Functions Helios_EnableBus() / Helios_DisableBus() work but cause system crashes when helios.library is flushed, then reloaded

The archive also includes a SDK for developers. Roguez points out that the API of the helios.library will be changed in this early status. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Poll: How much 68k-compatibility do you expect of a x86-AmigaOS?
Under the title link amiga-news.de hast started a poll which is written in German. Giving you the possibility to take part as well here is the English translation of the poll:

Question: How much 68k-compatibility a Amiga-like operating system at least should have got so you would buy it for 120 to 150 Euro for your x86-computer?

Answers:
- No compatibility at all. The current developments for the Amiga and some ports would be sufficient.
- A simple possibility to start 68k-applications with an emulator (UAE-integration) would be sufficient.
- I need the same 68k-compatibility as it is integrated in AmigaOS4 or MorphOS.
- I would only buy it if it works under WinUAE.
- I would never buy an operating system for x86 which is compatible to Amiga.

Thanks for your participation! (snx) (Translation: dr)

AROS: Instant Messenger SabreMSN 0.41
James "jahc" Carroll has ported his MSN-client SabreMSN to AROS. UTF8-support is still not implemented under AROS but will be added with the next update. Further limitations are the same as in the original AmigaOS-version:
  • Sometimes the SSL stuff fails when trying to connect, so the only thing you can do is keep clicking connect after it fails each time
  • The list of Online contacts isnt always sent in full when I first connect. I havent found an answer to that problem yet. So it appears like everyones offline, or most of your online contacts are offline. Reconnecting to the server once or twice in a row seems to restore the list properly sometimes.
  • Sometimes Sabre reapers. I've only had this happen twice in the last few weeks though. It seems to be dying on the MUI input loop, but maybe I've done something illegal before that call..
  • Newly added contacts arent added to the list, you need to reconnect to see them
  • Sometimes outgoing file transfers report during mid-transfer: "The file transfer was unsuccessful because your computer is out of disk space. Try deleting some files, and then ask the sender to try the transfer again."
  • Sabre uses the older MSN file transfer protocol, so many recent MSN clients fail when trying to send a file to Sabre.

First prices for SAM440ep-flex quoted
The first dealers have quoted prices for the next generation of ACube's PPC-computer SAM440: IMM Informatique will offer a SAM440ep-flex for 489 Euro here, Vesalia will offer it for 449 Euro.

In a thread on amigaworld.net Massimiliano "m3x" Tretene from Acube explained when SAM440ep- and SAM440ep-flex-motherboards will be available. Since 5th January SAM440ep has been delivered to the dealers and during the next 7-10 days some further boards will follow. In 3-4 weeks a fourth charge will be expected at ACube and afterwards it will follow the first SAM440ep-flex motherboards.

According to Tretene the current delay was caused by the CPU-deliveries which require to be happened 16 weeks before. Additionally there has been some communication problems between ACube and some dealers. Because of that the exact number of required boards was not clear. (cg) (Translation: dr)

OpenAmiga.org: Status report
Press release There are now 11 projects open for grabs and 15 assigned projects on OpenAmiga.org. 2008 provided a slow start for OpenAmiga, as expected with the number of available developers for our platform. Hopefully 2009 will speed things up a bit with the SAM adding more and more os4 users to the fold. Still we managed to submit the extended mouse pointer types project to Hyperion and quite a bit of source code was submitted to the svn.

Current status:

Fredrik Wikstrom (salass00) has submitted a range of his datatypes to the svn:
  • sun .au datatype
  • Targa .tga datatype
  • PC Paintbrush Exchange .pcx datatype
  • Direct Draw Surface .dds datatype
  • RIFF-WAVE .wav datatype
  • Mac OS icon .icns datatype
  • Windows icon .ico datatype
  • JPEG 2000 datatype
He also has submitted the code for his amazing Disk image device that lets you mount a large range of different device images. Such as iso, nrg, adf, hdf, bin and many many more.

Fredrik is also assigned to a project for creating an icon plug-in that uses vector based graphics.

Tuomas Hokka (TSK) has created a project for his amidock like utility called Benchbar.

Simon Archer (Rigo) is assigned to two projects, one to create a new clicktab.gadget class and the other to create a proposal for a new complementary version string to amiga binaries.

Centaurz has volunteered for writing a tutorial/guideline for using prefsobjects to store application specific data.

Vicente Gimeno (ami603) submitted his preliminary work on a workbench file lister.

A list of the assigned projects can be found here.

A lot of help is needed, both on the assigned projects as well as those not yet assigned. If you feel that you are able to contribute then please don't hesitate to join in.

Of the assigned projects, the Workbench file lister project is the one that needs the most help. But any of projects can use your help, just contact any moderator/webmaster or the person assigned to a project using the OpenAmiga message system.
