AROS: Results of user survey 2016
Under the title link Krzysztof 'deadwood' Śmiechowicz has published the result of a survey among AROS users, who weekly use the operating system. 54 persons participated.

The results of the survey show that 20 % uses AROS more than ten hours a week, mainly for browsing, programming and multimedia. All those who "spend less time with AROS, (you) spend it mostly on OS Tinkering but also, surprisingly, on Programming!". More than 60% use a "native x86 installation of AROS, either on real or virtualized hardware." (snx) (Translation: dr)

Workshop: upgrade an Amiga 'Tank' mouse with microswitches
Commodore mice - especially the famous 'Tank' model - are decades old and their switches aren't getting any better with age. Even if the mouse buttons still work, it often takes a constantly increasing amount of force to activate them or you never know if the mouse will react to your click this time. Amiga user 'Redskull' has fixed this problem by replacing the switches in his mouse with new microswitches, the following is a step by step guide showing what he had to do to upgrade is input device:

Remove the two phillips head screws near the cable end. Turn the mouse over, lift the end near the cable slightly. The top half will then slide backwards. Warning: Take care not to snap the clips at the rear of the top half.

Remove the two phillips head screws securing the PCB to the bottom half. You may find it easier to work by removing the cable - to do that, desolder the ground strap (see big red circle in next picture) and unplug the 8 pin connector.

Desolder the offending switch(es). The following pictures only show the left mouse button being replaced, but the principle is identical for the right mouse button of course.

These are the suitable PCB mount microswitches. The metal levers are not required.

If your switches have the metal lever attached, remove it by squeezing the end with a pair of needle-noze pliers.

Clip the leg furthest from the switch actuator with a pair of clippers or a side cutter.

The switch is ready to install now.

Drill two 0.7-1.0mm holes as shown. With the type of switch used here, the hole furthest from the edge of the board should be roughly inline with two existing holes, the other hole should be slightly offset. This may vary depending on the brand of switch you buy. Measure the hole distance up to match your switch.

Make two trace cuts as shown, isolating the land around the hole that you just made furthest from the board edge.

Scrape away some of the insulation around both holes.

That's what the new holes look from the top side of the board.

Insert the new microswitch into the new holes as shown.

Make sure the sitch is quite flush against the board before you solder it in. Make a link as shown by the red oval, a simple solder blob should suffice.

The actuator of the microswitch is roughly about 3mm higher than the original when installed, so the plastic stem behind the mouse button will need to be shortened to match.

Remove only so much that you can close the mouse (with screws) without activating the switch. It's better to trim in small increments and test a few times, than take too much off in one go and ruin your mouse. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Diagnostic tool: DiagROM 0.6
DiagROM is a diagnostic software which is meant to be burned in an EPROM by the user and replaces the regular Kickstart-ROMs of an Amiga. The software does not require any timer, IRQs or something like that and therefore can be launched on very broke computers and there can check the hardware to identify problems. DiagROM uses the serial port to export information or menus.

Currently DiagROM is available for free. Later there will be also programmed ROMs for a little fee. The source code will be released as well. (cg) (Translation: dr)

AROS: May 2016 Highlights
So far we reported about "A week in AROS" in which Krzysztof 'deadwood' Śmiechowicz collected information about changes of the operating system AROS. Recently only few changes could be reported therefore we will change to the monthly summaries of the same author:

"As the days finally got warmer on northern hemisphere, the activity of both users and developers of AROS reached quite low levels in May.

Krzysztof Smiechowicz made the necessary fixes to the source code and enabled again the x86_64 build of AROS, which was not available for over three months. Right now nightly build targets for all supported architectures are available.

In May first version of a new, interesting application has been made available by Marcus Sacrow. Mapparium is an OpenStreetMap client working under AROS and MorphOS. Current functionality allows for example browsing the map and searching for location.

Closing, a new survey has been launched in order to understand how AROS is used by people and how it can become even more useful. If you have not done so, please answer the survey questions in this thread." (snx) (Translation: dr)

Emulator: WinUAE 3.3.0
Toni Wilen has released version 3.3.0 of the Amiga emulator WinUAE which mainly provides AmigaOS-4 adaptions. The developer thanks all donators who supported that. He also pointed out that "performance is not (and can't be) as fast as with m68k AmigaOS, especially with directory harddrives, due to slower, much more complex UAE to/from native code context switch trap system."

New features:
  • New optional "indirect" UAE expansion trap system, fully compatible with OS4.x, virtual memory and some debugging programs
  • PC Bridgeboard disk drive raw image support. (ipf, ext adf, ...)
  • Monochrome video out emulation, including A1000 color/mono video out software control (BPLCON0 COLOR bit)
  • Dark palette fix option to correct colors of badly ported Atari ST games (Midnight Resistance etc.)
  • Official CSPPC/BPPC flash updater can be used to install full ROM image without having existing ROM image
  • Custom input events can execute Amiga-side commands and scripts
  • Windows clipboard to emulated Amiga keyboard paste support
  • Variable refresh rate optimized vsync mode (G-Sync/FreeSync)
  • Black frame injection is supported in variable refresh modes
  • IVS Trumpcard Pro/GrandSlam SCSI emulation
OS4.x supported UAE expansions:
  • Directory harddrives, including on the fly insertion/removal
  • CDFS CD mounting
  • Clipboard sharing
  • uaegfx RTG
  • uaehf.device hardfiles
  • Virtual mouse driver/magic mouse/tablet mode
  • uaenet.device
  • uaeserial.device
  • uaescsi.device
  • uae.resource
  • uaenative.library
Updates:
  • Game Ports panel input customization is finally very intuitive
  • On the fly input device insertion/removal improvements
  • Many input device handling updates and fixes
  • Faster screenshot/capture in after filtering mode
  • Continuous screenshot mode
  • CD³² Akiko chip low level emulation compatibility improved
  • Nero .nrg CD image support
Bug fixes:
  • Hardware RTG emulation rendered same frame twice in some situations causing slow performance
  • Amithlon partition type (0x78/0x30) support works again
  • Some storage devices failed to mount as a harddrive
  • AGA subpixel scrolling glitches
  • Miscellaneous custom chipset emulation fixes
  • AGA mode HAM6 colors were not 100% accurate
  • Some programmed custom chipset display modes crashed
  • Direct3D mode DirectX9 not installed warning corrupted memory
  • Fullscreen + paused + enter GUI: GUI was invisible
  • Display panel gamma value calculation fixed
  • CDFS automount didn't mount CDs with empty label

Amiga at the Royal Navy: WxWatch
Many fans of the Amiga know that the computer was used by the NASA. But the software provider Anticyclone now claimed that it was also used on ships of the British Royal Navy: On its website the company introduces "WxWatch", which is a "APT Weather Satellite image processing system which gave excellent results even under demanding conditions."

The Amiga is not mentioned by name, but the screenshots as well as parts of the text ("32 bit pre-emptive multitasking operating system", "ARexx scripting language") provide clear indications. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Tutorial: Raspberry Pi as PPP-server for the Amiga (Update 2)
An blog entry explains how you can use a Raspberry Pi with a cheap TTL-to-RS232-converter as a PPP server for an Amiga. The Amiga is connected to the single board computer using a regular RS 232 serial cable und is using a TCP stack - the tourial is using Miami as an example - to connect to the network.

Update: (25.05.2016, 15:20, cg)

The blog is hosted on the author's Raspbery Pi, which apparently can't handle the current amount of visitors very well. The website keeps disappearing for short periods of time.

Update: (26.05.2016, 22:15, cg)

A different Blog describes pretty much the same setup, apart from using the free AmiTCP 4.0 available from Aminet as a TCP stack on the Amiga. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Arcade racing game Amiga Racer 3.1 (AmigaOS 4/MorphOS)
Over the update function included in Michael Neitzel's Lotus clone "Amiga Racer", players get new features. Currently version 3.1 provides the first modules required for the multiplayer mode. Registered users also get a new Hungarian scenario, which is the 8th for Amiga Racer:

The next update is planned for May 22nd which will add the function "live weather": Then the weather conditions in the scenarios will correspond to the weather conditions in reality which means if it rains in England for real then in the corresponding scenario of the Amiga Racer game it also rains. This also applies to the time of day.

Amiga Racer is available for AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS as well as for other operating systems, a version for classic Amigas also is planned. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Hollywood: RapaGUI 1.0

Rapid Cross-Platform GUI Development On All Islands

Press release: This is the game changer you've been waiting for! Airsoft Softwair is proud to present its most ambitious Hollywood plugin yet: RapaGUI - a cross-platform GUI toolkit that allows the creation of native (!) GUIs for AmigaOS (MUI), Windows, Linux (GTK), and Mac OS X based systems! This is a real killer plugin and truly a world's first because RapaGUI is the first cross-platform GUI toolkit to support Amiga-based systems with MUI as well. This is surely a dream come true for many Amiga users! In fact, RapaGUI is a MUI Royale spin-off with the killer app twist. Like in MUI Royale, GUI layouts in RapaGUI are conveniently defined in XML files which are then converted into full-blown GUIs by RapaGUI on-the-fly. It just doesn't get any easier!

MUI Royale and RapaGUI are very similar in their design. Thus, porting scripts from one to another is not much of an effort. A detailed migration guide from MUI Royale to RapaGUI is included in the RapaGUI manual. Note that for Amiga-only apps MUI Royale is still the number one choice because it allows you to access almost all of MUI's features whereas RapaGUI's focus is on full portability which is why its API represents the lowest common denominator between the Amiga, Windows, Linux and Mac OS X GUI toolkits. All MUI fans will be happy to see that RapaGUI's API was heavily inspired by the MUI API so that you can now use the world-famous MUI API to write GUIs for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X as well!

RapaGUI uses an object-oriented design composed of over 40 MOAI (Magic Omnigui Architecture Interface) classes. Those MOAI classes constitute the heart of RapaGUI. All GUI elements supported by RapaGUI (windows, widgets, menu bars...) are simply objects derived from those MOAI classes. By wrapping the diverse native OS GUI APIs into platform-independent MOAI classes, those classes reduce the many faces of the different OS GUI APIs into just a single MOAI API face, carved in stone by RapaGUI!

RapaGUI supports all the widgets you need to create modern GUI applications, including multi-column listviews, treeviews, tabbed page widgets, toolbars, status bars, text editor widgets, menu bars, HTML views and much more. The highlight of RapaGUI, however, is certainly its inbuilt Hollywood MOAI class. This class allows dynamic embedding of complete Hollywood displays into GUIs which can be used to combine Hollywood's powerful multimedia functionality with RapaGUI's GUI abilities into one powerful application.

RapaGUI comes with almost 300 pages of documentation in various formats like PDF, HTML, AmigaGuide, and CHM that describes the GUI programming basics in detail and provides a convenient MOAI function and class reference. A step-by-step tutorial that guides you to your first RapaGUI program is also included. On top of that, almost 20 example scripts are included in the distribution archive, including advanced scripts like a complete video player which really show off the power of Hollywood and RapaGUI working together.

All this makes RapaGUI the ultimate cross-platform GUI toolkit, carefully crafted for you sailors of the seven GUI seas! Only RapaGUI allows rapid cross-platform GUI development on all islands - it is the ultimate fusion of all the different OS GUI toolkits into one MOAI face, carved in stone for eternity and beyond.

RapaGUI is the fourth plugin to bear the "Powered by Hollywood 6.0" seal of quality as it utilizes the new display adapter plugin interface introduced with Hollywood 6.0. That's why we here at Airsoft Softwair say: Life starts at 6.0. Since RapaGUI requires a few enhancements introduced in Hollywood 6.1, you need at least Hollywood 6.1 to use RapaGUI. RapaGUI is available free of charge and can be downloaded from the official Hollywood portal at the title link. Versions for AmigaOS 3.x, AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, AROS, Windows, Mac OS X and Linux are provided. AmigaOS users please do note that although RapaGUI is still compatible with MUI 3.8, it is highly recommended to install MUI 4.0 to use all of RapaGUI's features.

USB mouse adapter: JP-Mouse
Two members of the Portuguese forum Retromania.pt, José Gonçalves and Paulo Sousa (JPRetro), have developed a space-saving low-cost adapter which can connect an USB-mouse to an Amiga or Atari ST.

Under the title link this article is introduced in Portuguese, but on the left side you can translate the website into English. The adapter supports optical mice as well as wireless ones (27 MHz). If you order an adapter, the version for Amiga is set as default. If you want to order the version for Atari, you have to specify it. (snx) (Translation: dr)
