New MUI is comming!
Laire (Ralph Schmidt, coder of the now-gone phase5 and the founder of MorphOS project) said this on ircnet #amiga around Sat May 6 00:50 EEST 2000.

We were talking about AmigArt Morphos poll (saying that 41,5% won't buy Morphos unless WOS and WarpUP support is added):

(included here with permission from Ralph)

So MUI4 *is* really coming, it seems. How come Ralph seems to be the only one that REALLY makes things happen. :-)

Oh yes, and this is really no news as Ralph pointed out. Just read the text at the title link.

There has been some internal discussion about this. I think it is important to check the results of the poll mentioned yourself, since there have been more than two options in it... (mb)

New wheelsupport software for Mroocheck PC Mouse Interface
The new Mroocheck.driver ver.1.2 supports all the possible Amiga graphic modes. The previous version of the Mroocheck.driver supported only: PAL, NTSC, DbPAL, DbNTSC and all the modes in graphic cards.

The Mroocheck PC Mouse Interface sends information to Amiga on wheel movements in the form of analogue signals. The internal A/C converters built into Amiga are used to decode them.

The immense advantage of this solution is that wheel signal decoding does not hog the computer's processor.

The Amiga A/C internal converters are based on counters of lines of the image generated by Amiga's graphic chips. The current driver update allows calibrating these converters for any graphic modes.

MUImp3 Alternative MUI for NCode
Meanwhile, MUImp3 is available in version 1.5 and I think I can now mention it in public ;). MUImp3 is a MUI for the MP3 encoder NCode. MUImp3 uses the command cdda for reading digital audio data (where supported by the drive) and can access the CDID files for generating tags.

Thanks to ARexx, downloads from the internet are possible with the program ACDB. This all is based on Arexx, MUIRexx and the rexxtricks.library. MUImp3 is available on Aminet and on my website under »Projects«.

ParaGlide Voodoo 3D module soon available
The Voodoo 3D module for the PicassoIV graphics card will be available soon. Preorders are being taken.

As there's no information about a shipping date on the Village Tronic homepage, we inquired via email. Birgit Neumeier of VT confirmed that the ParaGlide module will be going into production soon. "We are currently dealing with the many preorders and hope to finish this in the next two weeks."

Heise: Free Server for Color Calibration Profiles (ICM)
«At the address www.ProfileHelp.com , the Jetsoft Development Company offers a server for ICM profiles. Such profiles are used to improve the color output on specially equipped systems (e.g. current Apple Macintosh computers or Windows 98 and 2000 PCs). After a free registration, JetSoft transfers a password via email that entitles you to freely download the profile files.»

Wolf Faust, known to Amiga users as programmer of the Amiga printing driver program »Studio« writes about it in the Heise forum:

Besides www.ProfileHelp.com there's also http://www.coloraid.de. www.coloraid.de is still under construction, but you can already find there not only free profiles, but also free software for the creation of profiles and cheap IT 8.7 calibration images. The site is a portal for several programmers who work with color software in their "free time".

More profiles for monitors and printers, as well as free software for the creation of profiles, are in development (for years!) and should see the light of day one by one within the next months.

"I will stand up for the further development of our OS 3.5" promises Petro Tyschtschenko, vice president of Amiga, but also says that his influence on the business in the USA is not so big. He also means that it is possible that on christmas the new TAO/Amiga-OS is maybe available. Also an appearance on the CeBit-Home in Leipzig, Germany, is planned. AROS-ML

AROS still alive
There is the rumour abroad that AROS is dead, that there is no further work on the project. Aaron Digulla tells his opinion and gives facts about that:

Date Thu, 2000-05-04 17:40:39 +0200
Subject [AROS-Announce] AROS is *NOT* dead !
Return-Path aros-announce-admin@lists.hepe.com

Someone posted a message to the AROS-User list mentioning that AROS
is dead and that Amiga doesn't do anything, etc (the usual "I'm unhappy
and I want everyone else to be unhappy, too").

Facts:

- AROS is not dead. We are currently working on forming a professional,
payed development team which will work at least part time on AROS.
This should allow us to finish the work much more quickly. I cannot
promise that this will really happen but that will be decided on
Thursday, the 11th of May (next week). I will post here ASA I know
something new.

- I'm in close contact with Amiga and we're bouncing ideas forth
and back how Amiga and AROS could work together or how AROS could
get into a stable legal state. Most of these ideas did turn out to
be unusable and therefore we're not discussing them in the public.
Otherwise, there would be a lot of havoc and disruption.

- I'm also in close contact with OAF. AROS and OAF have separated
again because our mutual goals were no longer compatible. Basically,
OAF wants a version of AROS under GPL which would allow them to
work with FSF and other open source organizations which require this.
His problem ATM is to find out which parts of AROS infringe copyrights,
trademarks and patents and to find out how he can work around these.

AROS itself will try to move closer to Amiga because then we can get
support from them, we can help Amiga companies to make their old
apps work on AROS, we will get legal protection from Amiga, etc.

I cannot say if either attempt has an advantage over the other. All I
can say is that both make sense and since it's not clear which is
better, both should be tried. May the better win :-)

Small Gui for GhostScript
Due to a discussion on the Voyager-mailinglist about APDF and GhostScript (about the complicated usage of GS via Shell and command options or GS-commands) I decided to create a small GUI which solves this problem a bit.

At the moment only the showing and printing of EPS/PS/PDF-files is supported, but i will add the possibility to convert into bitmap-formats and small installing text (usage of GhostScript with webbrowsers - MIME-type support). Of course is this all GNU-GPL freeware.
