17th Chaos Communication Congress - 27.-29.12.2000
For the 17th time, the Chaos Communication Congress will take place. Hosting the event, as in the last two years, is the "Haus Am Koellnischen Park" in Berlin. Date is, as always, December 27th to 29th.

All Congress information is available in two languages this time. The website uses your preset language - if you want to switch, there are buttons on the page which you'll find intuitively. The website has everything you have to know, and will be successively extended in the weeks till the Congress. For spreading the news by mail and news, again there is a detailed HOWTO/FAQ in ISO-ASCII.

The Congress has some entertaining on schedule again, which is summarized in this event overview. If you are planning to participate in the Hackcenter this year, you should have a look at the changed requirements. Moreover, a registration is necessary.

Alternative-Games.de will start on December 1st, 2000
Lately there were an increasing number of cooperations and joint-ventures of firms that only released for one of the alternative computer systems until now. We want to support the activities of these firms by establishing a portal for users of every alternative system. This portal will contain news, reviews and much more.

From the start there will be an Amiga and a Macintosh section. For additional sections we are missing people who are willing to help us to make the project a success. We are looking for section managers for Linux, BeOS and Milan (Atari). But we still need some persons for the Amiga and Mac sections. If you would like to help us with reviews and reports, please mail to info@alternative-games.de.

New YAM-extension: HTMLread
YAM is not able to handle mails written in HTML-code. It is very difficult to read these mails with all the tags.

HTMLread fixes this problem. It automatically recognizes such mails and sends them to the HTML-viewer of your choice. Every HTML-viewer is supported. You can choose from a predefined list or make you own one. The predefined list contains: MultiView (mit HTMLdatatype), SimpleView, HTMLview (Demo), OpenUrl, Voyager, IBrowse, AWebSE (OS3.5) and AWeb.

HTMLread will easily be installed using the installer. HTMLread is freeware.

Jarno van der Linden on the Open Amiga-ML

AmigaSDK: Atoll
On November, 25th 2000 Jarno van der Linden published the alpha version of the developer tool 'Atoll'. This tool converts C link libraries, like libpng.a or libjpeg.a almost automatically into a tool set (tool sets on AmigaSDK "match" to the libraries on other systems). Up to now is has been tested successful with libpng.a and libjpeg.a (part of gfx/misc/libjpeg-6a.tbz2).

To use Atoll knowledge of VP assembler is necessary, and knowledge of sed and regular expressions are useful. Atoll itself additionally needs the gd.tgz-Archiv.

The documentation for Atoll declares how to convert libjpeg.a into a tool set. To try this example the gfx/misc/libjpeg-6a.tbz2-Archiv is needed.

I created a counterpart to my Amiga Samba port. A filesystem to share files with other SMB servers. With knobs on I need some help: who would like to test this filesystem, may please get in contact with me via e-mail (olsen@sourcery.han.de). It is about to find errors and to enhance functionality of the filesystem. Experiences with Samba and debugging tools for Amiga (Enforcer, Sashimi, Wipeout, etc.) are presumed.

KDH Advent Calendar with Surprises
From 1st to 24th of December 2000 (except of 8th to 11th of December) KDH proposes a top deal at a very interesting price every day. So there is a new daily highlight from 1st to 24th of December. Click on the corresponding door of the KDH advent calendar and discover the daily proposition. The best way is to take a daily look at the KDH advent calendar so you won't miss your dream deal, since every proposition lasts only for exactly one day. Since we are at the WoA 2000 we'll have to suspend our deals for that period.
