TTEngine 5.1 released
TTEngine is the TrueType font based text rendering engine for AmigaOS. Version 5.1 can be downloaded from the home page of TTEngine. TTEngine 5.1 has been released. New features:

  • Recompiled with newest FreeType 2.1.3 sources. After some research I've decided to leave bytecode interpreter turned on by default (it is turned off in default FreeType config). Autohinter seems to be not that good as FreeType authors advertise.
  • Two wersions of TTEngine are now distributed. One full featured and one without bytecode interpreter. Both have 100% compatible API and can be interchanged by just replacing library file. The "light" version of the library may be interesting for commercial applications authors, since bytecode interpreter uses some patented things.
  • TTEngine now supports all ISO-8859 encodings (from 1 to 16, except 12 which probably does not exist), also UTF-16BE and UTF-32BE.
  • Application programmer can specify custom 8-bit to Unicode character mapping.
  • A few more precise global metrics attributes have been added.
  • Added some example programs and "ViewISO" tool showing all ISO-8859 encodings for a font face.
Check "release_notes" file in the distribution archive for the full list of changes. (ps)

No Mekka symposium 2003 (Update II)
As announced today on the Mekka Symposium homepage the Mekka Symposium 2003 will not be held. Further details can be found in the following original message or at the title link.

Dear Fellow Sceners,

We will keep the upcoming information as short and painless as possible:

Due to irreconcilable personal differences within the main organizer team, the Mekka & Symposium 2003 WILL NOT TAKE PLACE. Yes, we're serious.

Some of you will shout "NO, you simply can't do that!". Believe us, it was a hard decision for us, too -- but in the end, we had to make it. If you are interested in some more explaining info, read the next few lines.

A demoparty should be fun for everybody, and this is also valid for the organizers that set the whole thing up; a good event can only be organized in a good mood, otherwise it will be a disaster. We don't want the next Mekka & Symposium to become a disaster, so we're going to stop right before this can happen.

The last few years and events were a huge success and we all had a lot of fun; this should never be forgotten by anyone, neither visitors, nor organizers! We stop right at this point to make sure that Mekka & Symposium will always be remembered as one of the best demo parties ever. All the past years it was your support and contribution, your presence and your personal efforts that made Mekka & Symposium such a great, respected and productive event and we deeply say "THANKS" for that, to each and every one of you, be it visitors or organizers.

Sincerely yours,
The Mekka & Symposium Main Organizer Team.

PS: We were told that an alternative party in Germany is being organized at Easter. Stay tuned for details.

Update:
Petition: "Bring back Mekka Symposium Petition".

Update 26.11.2002:
Under http://breakpoint.untergrund.net you will find information about an alternative event. (ps) (Translation: sk)

Amiga + Retro Computing 2002

ARC 2002 News: Thendic France biggest exhibitor
Thendic France has increased their exhibition area, making themselves the biggest exhibitor of AMIGA + RETRO COMPUTING 2002. The reason for this extension is the amount of computers that they are presenting. Visitors of the show have the opportunity to persuade themselves of the combination of the new PPC board and MorphOS.

The same amount of computers will be provided for the betatester-conference that will take place on the same weekend in room "Berlin 1" of the Dorint-Hotel "Quellenhof", which is located right next to the Eurogress. Thendic France has finalized the booking of this room during a meeting that took place in Aachen on November 21st.

The new company Genesi that unites Thendic France and bplan Germany will be present with all personnel at the show. More than 20 developers of hard- and software will answer your questions. Read more about the technical data of Pegasos, that has been provided by Thendic France.

In addition to the new machines, Thendic will also bring part of their museum to Aachen. Rare machines like the Walker (Amiga successor that has never been produced) and 8-bit Commodore machines will be on display at a separate booth. All the machines are still intact, so you can experience them in action!

There will be the following persons on the show:
From bplan: Gerald Carda, Thomas Knäbel, Ralph Schmidt and Emmanuel Lesueur.
From Thendic-France: Nicolas Sallin, David Gerber, Mark Olsen, Rakesh and Sharwin Raghoebardayal, Nicholas Blachford, Bertrand Presles, Eric Bertail, Céline Waldberg, Pascal Roe D'Albert, Sébastien Lokhamkhouak, Matthieu Leroyer and of course Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck.
Plus, there will be other core MorphOS Developers and a number of Betatesters. (ps)

Telepolis

Telepolis: Microsoft researchers - DRM no help against peer-to-peer file sharing
A team of four Microsoft researchers has come to the conclusion that DRM (Digital Rights Management) is no feasible way to act against peer-to-peer file sharing. According to the scientists, this also concerns watermark based copy protections systems, as devices with watermark detector are far less attractive to users than competitive products without detector.

Start of a GRex petition
M. Lück wrote:
Hello GRex users,

as you surely read on the homepage of CyberGraphX there'll be no GRex support in OS 4.0 as Hyperion haven't received any hardware/software documentation. Because of this we have decided to start this petition to get a chance to run OS4 on the GRex. It would only offer advantages to all, not only to OS4 but also to MorphOS, if the API of the cybpci.library would be open.

This is no flame call against DCE but the expression of the wish of the GRex users who want to have more drivers, programs and OS4 support. We hope that you'll take part.

The petition can be accessed under http://www.trimaweb.de/petition/. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Audio: Aseq site updated, new screenshot and more
The website for Aseq, an audio and midi sequencer, has been updated. You can find a new screenshot and the feature list has been updated, plus there is a little bit of new information.

I have been able to buy a cheap PowerMac 7300, which means a port to that platform can start very soon. Likely when the first classic Amiga version has been finished and released. This does not mean classic Amiga development will stop or be delayed. Expect more news and updates soon. (ps)

Intel Pentium 4 with 3 GHz in multitasking
The Intel Corporation introduced last week the new Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading (HT) technology and a clock frequency of 3,06 GHz. With this does the chip producer not only manage to jump over the 3 GHz mark but also to make desktop PCs up to 25% more powerful when using the new HT technology. These systems can execute several programs or requests by the computer at the same time with no delay they say at Intel. According to Intel, leading computer manufacturers worldwide will offer PCs with support for the HT technology and on the basis of the Pentium 4 processor with 3,06 GHz from now on. Computers using this processor technology will be recognisable through the "HT" symbol in the Pentium logo. (ps) (Translation: wk)
