Amiga-Hardware to give away
Matthias Henze writes:
I'm giving away the following Amiga hardware resp. accessories:
- Oktagon 2008 SCSI 2 controller
- Emplant Macintosh Emulator
- Original Amiga mice (of A500+ and A4000)
- Original A4000 desktop case (Commodore)
- Original A4000 PSU for Commodore desktop case
- Original A4000 Shuttle Board for Commodore desktop case
- A PC desktop case rebuilt for the A500+ with Kickstart switch
(incl. ROM 1.3 and ROM 2.04 and mechanical adaption for turbo boards - used to accomodate a Stormbringer H530), small internal amplifier, internal floppy disk drive, complete internal and pluggable cabling, space for external hard disks or Action Replay etc.
- External keyboard for A500+
- Power PC Board (PC emulator by KCS) for A500+
Back when I dismantled the parts (a couple of years ago), everything was working perfectly. However, I can't guarantee that this is still the case. If you're interested you can contact me and collect the parts personally at my place or get them by mail. If you want to have them sent by mail you have to pay the postage up front however. Sorry, but I have made bad experiences already too often.

New and updated software by OnyxSoft
The Swedish shareware developers group OnyxSoft has released two new tools and updated some tools.
FileComp (v1.0) is a small utility that allows a fast comparison of two files regarding their size, their content, their date and other criteria.
Snakee (v0.1) is the first attempt of OnyxSoft to lead two worlds to each other instead of divide them even further into good and evil. Snakee is a simple Snake clone that is thought to serve as a simple tutorial how you can support AmigaOS as well as MorphOS. The executable files for both systems are included as well as the source code.
BackUp is a simple tool to backup data. New in the version 1.4 are automatic backups, timing handling, simulated backups for test modi, new message handling and many more functions.
DRemind is a useful tool to remind one of dates and other information. The new version 1.65 comes among other things with improvements of the reminder function and the date display.
GummiSurf is an expansion for the download manager Charon. In version 1.1 has the tooltype support for own preferences been added and the URL handling has been optimized.

Memory card reader for IDE / Standalone media player
At Hama I discovered today a memory card reader/writer for the IDE port. This one needs no additional software to run. It's just treated as a hard disk and it's much cheaper than the reader PCD47 for SCSI-II. The device costs 69,99 Euro.
Furthermore I discovered a standalone media player at Hama that can read without a computer digital photos in the JPG format, Mpeg1 movies and Mp3 sound via the A/V output. For this it can read six different memory card types (CF I + II, SM, SD, MMC). With a remote control you can then display movies or display pictures of your holidays. Besides that you can play your Mp3 data.

Software News (17.05.2003)
Network: Samba version 3.0alpha24
The Samba team has released version 3.0alpha24 on May, 14th 2003. The full list of changes can be read here.
Samba is a software to offer the possibility to connect PC and Amiga via a network. Information about Samba for Amiga can be found at amigasamba.org.
LowLevel gameport driver v41.21 is online
Guido Mersmann has created a new version of his lowlevel.library gameport driver that contains the following changes and fixes:
- FEATURE: New graphical gamepad buttons in the GUI.
- BUGFIX: reworked timeout mechanism (works more stable at high CPU load).
- FEATURE: several gamepad controller profiles in the settings added leading to a much easier choosing and setting.
- FEATURE: From now on you can calibrate a gamepad in the settings. If you then fix the settings you can save them now so that you do not need to calibrate them later again.
- BUGFIX: Warning requester added when especially under Amithlon a gameport address is used that is non-standard. This should help to avoid crashes if one sets completely wrong addresses.
- FEATURE: The tool GamePortEnable now only shows the offset as the exact address for IO hardware can't be detected because of an API problem of the OpenPCI library. Please use with non-Amithlon systems the tool GamePortFind, on Amithlon systems you only ghave to add the address $00EE0xxx to the found offset (xxx stands for the returned offset value!).
- BUGFIX: Bug in the calibrating routine fixed. The function with 1-axis gamepads has additionally been improved.

Amiga.sf ports - hotwayd v0.5.3
Ever wanted to access your hotmail[tm] emails
without having to battle with the web interface? This is now possible using hotwayd
in conjunction with your favourite POP-3 implementing mail reader. Hotwayd allows
you to do this by using the HTTPMail protocol, the same protocol that Outlook
Express[tm] uses, to access the hotmail servers. Hotwayd acts as a proxy between your
POP mail reader and the HTTPMail hotmail servers. Simply set it up as an Internet
service on your machine or another machine on your network and enjoy using your
favourite mail client via the POP-3 protocol to collect your hotmail emails.
Download: hotwayd-0.5.3.lha
Textviewer: EvenMore - several plugin updates
- 17/5/03 - Updated Troff plugin. Will now skip macro sequences.
Fixed bug where if some commands were in different cases, the
plugin might not have recognised them, .br and .BR, .IP and .Ip.
Now skips comments beginning with '''. Should now detect style
changes in strings using \, eg. \fI, \fR, \*(L", \*(R", etc.
- 16/5/03 - Fixed a bug in the RTF plugin where it could skip two
lines instead of one during wordwrap.
- 15/5/03 - Fixed bug in which RTF plugin could not handle colour
tables which didn't end in ";".
LouiSe's MorphOS-Ports
20030515 - New MorphOS ports uploaded:
apache-1.3.24 with php-4.3.1 (WEB server with PHP support)
php-4.3.1 (standalone PHP-CLI)
ncftp-3.1.5 (ftp client)
New MUI classes
- 16.05.03 · Bugfixed MCC_SpeedBar
MCC_SpeedBar updated, and now SpeedBarCfg.mcc is fixed. Only program I know
that it failed on is Voodoo-X, but there might have been others. Fixed, anyway :)
Thanks must go to Kev Harrison for mailing Alfie about it so quickly. He also
mailed me, but the fix was out before the info made it to the page. BTW,
CManager 24.1 on his site also...
Regards,
Jocke 'Zerohero' Sjöblom
- 15.05.03 · Even more MCC_SpeedBar & MCC_Urltext
MCC_SpeedBar bumped to v19.0, now, before you start to mail me that this
archive is broken, I know it is, but it's only some code examples, the
real classes are still ok. MCC_Urltext v18.9 archive is ok, though :)
On Alfie's site also MCC_BWin is supposed to be v20.5, but the archive
only includes v20.3. If you download Contact Manager 24.0 you'll get
MCC_BWin v20.5 included, and also get a great update of CManager :)
Oh, and Alfie, keep keeping me busy :)

Amiga Arena: Interview with Elena Novaretti (ZoneXplorer)
A few weeks ago released the 30 years old Italian Elena Novaretti
for the first time the tool "ZoneXplorer" for AmigaOS (68k) and MorphOS (PPC).
"ZoneXplorer" is a useful tool to create and search fractals that certainly is unique on the Amiga.
The possibilities to create unique fractal pictures in 24 bit speak for themselves. One or the other may know the images by Elena Novaretti as they were shown at the Amiga fair "Pianeta 2002". In the interview with the Amiga Arena Elena Novaretti talks about her career and of course about her program "ZoneXplorer" and about her view regarding the future of AmigaOS and MorphOS respectively where the differences lay.
Enjoy the comprehensive and interesting interview that is available in German and English.

AtheneOS by Rocklyte: AthenYX
The alternative operating system Athene by Rocklyte Systems has been released as standalone OS. It's called AthenYX and it is related to AmigaOS among other things as it comes, if desired, with a graphical user interface (GUI) that bases on Amiga Workbench 3.0: the OmegaWorkbench.
Athene is an operating system that allows the user to create an own GUI where it is possible to emulate almost every existing GUI system. Athene supports draggable screens, assigns and there's an approach for a file manager in the way of Diskmaster/DOpus.
Athene itself is easy to port (embedded systems, games consoles, PCs), object oriented and comes among other things with several scripting languages.

Amiga Forever v5.2 is now shipping
Amiga Forever 5.2 is now shipping. It is available in a CD-ROM,
CD-ROM Upgrade, Online Edition, Online Upgrade and Cross-Platform
Online Edition.
Amiga Forever contains state of the art software to satisfy two
major needs of many Amiga users: to use their existing Amiga
software and data on non-Amiga hardware, and to share data between
Amiga and other systems. Additionally, software, tutorial and
reference files which are likely to be of interest to any
Amiga enthusiast are included.
Features include:
- Just-in-time version of emulation software (Bernd Meyer's JIT code), carefully configured and publicly benchmarked by Cloanto to be 30 times faster than in previous versions of Amiga Forever. The Amiga runs in a window or in full screen mode, makes full use of thousands of Windows (or other OS) drivers, can access PC files (even on NTFS partitions, in the Windows version) and does not require a reboot.
- Software Manager, an advanced content delivery system developed by Cloanto, for easy and privacy-conscious management of all emulation-related components (updates, downloads, news, etc.)
- Amiga Explorer software, which allows you to connect an Amiga to one or more PCs, and access Amiga files (including virtual ADF and ROM files), directories and volumes directly from the Windows Desktop. Amiga Explorer is easier to install and configure than other networking tools, and includes direct support for serial (null-modem) cable connections, as well as TCP/IP.
- MenuBox launcher, to boot different Amiga configurations with one mouse click, either from CD-ROM (no installation or reboot required) or after installation
- New and fully licensed Picasso96 software (not a shareware version), maps Amiga graphics requests directly to fast x86 calls and powerful low-level DirectX functions (Windows version of emulation)
- Amiga Narrator and Translator speech synthesis components (made available for distribution with the Amiga OS for the first time since 1991)
- All Amiga ROMs up to version 3.1 (the last ROM that will ever be available for the "Classic Amiga"!)*
- CDTV and CD³² boot ROMs and extended ROMs (can be used to play CDTV and CD³² games, even booting directly from CD-ROM, requires free upgrade to emulation software)*
- GlowIcons look (as used in Amiga OS "3.5", "3.9" and "XL", but also compatible with NewIcons and MagicWB)
- Option to switch entire environment from "new look" (GlowIcons) to "old look" (Classic) and vice versa
- Emulation includes: Amiga custom chips, RTG graphics, up to 512 MB of Zorro III RAM, virtual memory, TCP/IP, MIDI, native x86 code, built-in support for ADF, ADZ, DMS and FDI disk image files
- Preinstalled software includes: Personal Paint 7.1b (paint, animation and image processing software, includes GIF/LZW license), DirDiff (file synchronization and replication software), AmiToRTF (to convert texts from Amiga to Windows formats), MailBX (to convert Amiga mail archives to Microsoft Mail, Outlook Express and Exchange Server), drag-and-drop LhA, print spooler (easily print all Amiga documents under Windows, bypassing parallel port emulation), Directory Opus 5.5 (courtesy of GPSoftware), TurboText (exclusive latest version with stack problem fix), KingCON, ToolManager, ReqTools, etc.
- Latest version of WinUAE and WinFellow tested and supported by Cloanto
Disk2FDI software to read Amiga floppy disks on PC (experimental version, requires two floppy drives)
- Tutorials and FAQs on data sharing, emulation, floppy disks, serial links, TCP/IP, UAE, Fellow and much more.
- All software tested on Windows XP
- MPEG-1 videos: The Deathbed Vigil (one hour and 58 minutes, i.e. the full version of this "must have" video) and Jay Miner Speech (49 minutes)*
- Dozens of other enhancements and add-ons
* = CD-ROM version only (both standard and upgrade). The Online Edition includes 1.3 and 3.1 ROMs (sufficient both for classic games and for the most recent software). CDTV and CD³² ROMs are also included in the downloadable Amiga Forever Plus Pack. The MPEG videos are only included on the CD-ROM (both standard and upgrade). The CD-ROM contains version 5.0, with free online upgrade to version 5.2 using Software Manager (included).
The Amiga emulation software on the Amiga Forever CD-ROM comes preinstalled and preconfigured for Windows. The Amiga ROM and OS files can be used by any implementation of the Amiga emulators, including for example Unix/Linux (UAE comes with source code), Be, PowerMac, etc. These emulators are constantly updated, and can be downloaded from the sites listed in the Home Pages section of the navigation bar.
Pricing:
CD-ROM: 59.95 Euro
CD Upgrade: 34.95 Euro (nba)

Inventory of Amiga, Inc. for public sale - AI denies
On the webiste of the auctioneer James G. Murphy Co.
there are besides Amiga logo further information about the public sale of inventory
from old offices of Amiga, Inc. in Snoqualmie.
According to rumours these things have been attached by the former letter of Amiga, Inc.
because of not payed rentals and should be now sold by auction.
Some times ago Amiga, Inc. announced the move but has not given any new address since
this time.
Today Gary Peake who works at Amiga, Inc. denied the romours about the liquidation
of Amiga, Inc. and told that the things which are supposed to be sold by auction
are "old stuff from the offices" which "are no longer needed".
Nevertheless for collectors of Amiga stuff the day of auction which is the 17th June 2003 might be
an interesting date where you can buy equipment for the Amiga for few money.

Pagan Games Puts New AmigaAnywhere Game in Planning
Thomas Würgler of Pagan Games writes:
As some of you have probably noticed, the Amiga Game Pack #2 has now been
released into retail stores - name CompUSA. Obviously this is a big step
towards true financial viability of Amiga Anywhere projects, which again
helps fund AmigaOS projects.
We are getting closer to finalizing another project for Amiga Anywhere,
and look forward to getting it to a state where we can show it to you.
Besides that we are still working hard on our Dreamcast shoot 'em up
project, and we can't wait to show you what we've got in the works.
Hopefully we'll be able to show some of it off before summer.
This was just a quick update, which will be followed a more thorough one,
when we have more to share - hopefully in the near future. (nba) (Translation: dm)

RIAA Withdraws Warning to amiga-scene.org
The RIAA had to withdraw their warnings to Internet sites.
In numerous instances the US-American music industry corporate group RIAA (Recording Industry Association of
America) had sent warnings against administrators of Web and FTP servers who offered MP3 data on their systems. Along with
that these administrators were notified through targetless RIAA scans of their servers who of their users made free music available.
The Demo Scene server amigascene.org was hit by this step, and was excused in a form letter that said they had offered "about 0
Music data for download." After this action became known, the RIAA now has withdrawn the warnings to falsely hit Internet sites. (nba) (Translation: dm)

CD32 Outside Shelved
After five issues the publication of the digital magazine CD32 Outside has been suspended. This decision was made in order to free up the resources of the team for more important stuff. Unfortunately there just wasn't enough time to create, publish, and do advertising and marketing for further issues.
[In the following long German text, chief editor Thorsten Schölzel offers thanks from the CD32 team to a lot of people. He talks about webdesign, some games, and Commodore politics which no-one understands. He invites readers to www.cd32-allianz.de, and says emails are welcome. -DM]
Das Team von CD32 Outside möchte sich bei allen Personen bedanken,
die ihm bei der Erstellung der CD³²Outside geholfen und mit
Material und Informationen versorgt haben. Besonders hervorheben
In diesem Sinne,
Thorsten Schölzel" (nba) (Translation: dm)
