Event: News from AmiWest 2014 (2nd update)
Up to and including today, in Sacramento this year's AmiWest is taking place. We have summarized the news which has been available so far.

Additional to the official announcement of the Sam460cr by ACube Systems (Foto, amiga-news.de reported) and the takeover of Amigaworld.net by A-EON Technology, now it has been officially announced, that at the end of the year AmigaOS 4.1 "Final Edition" (update 8) are supposed to be released (amiga-news.de reported). So far we have not binding statements if the Final Edition, which among others summarizes the previous online updates, requires an existing licence or if it is a full version, despite the fact that the price is only 29 Euro. According to third parties, a serial number of a previously purchased version of AmigaOS 4.1 seems to be required.

Due to the fact that the Final Edition will be delivered on DVD, it is much likely that the announced version 4.2 of the operating system is even further away from a soon release: According to Hyperion's Steven Solie, it is recommended to purchase the Final Edition instead of waiting for version 4.2, because "it is not that close". For AmigaOS 4.2 again Gallium-3D-graphic as well as the support of several processor cores have been announced.

On-site the Cyrus+-boards for the AmigaOne X5000 have been presented which still are in beta test. A photograph shows its new Early-Startup menu with the common appearance of the Amiga. While Linux completely supports the computer - the game SuperTuxKart was demonstrated -, the current level of development of the version of AmigaOS according to Trevor Dickinson reminds to the early versions for the AmigaOne XE.

Currently the first expansion card for the Xorro slot of the AmigaOne X1000 and X5000 as another hardware is in development. The "Sentinel X-Logger" is supposed to record Debug output of the serial interface on a built-in SD-card.

Regarding software, it was announced, that A-EON Technology has bought the rights for the further development of the 3D-driver system Warp3D. Besides, a native GDB-debugger for AmigaOS 4 as well as an update of the Radeon driver were announced. The driver will support hardware-accelerated video output in 1080p as well as the latest graphic boards.

Additionally, the Radeon driver will be part of the new software package called Radiance Multimedia Suite. Radiance also includes Workbench Candi for hardware-supported animation of the Workbench background with the compositing-Engine, version 7.3 of Personal Paint (the update includes e.g. new brushes), Sketchblock Lite with the Fraktal-Generator, MPlayer and DvPlayer as well as videos, background pictures and pictogramms.

Further information was available about LibreOffice ( its AmigaOS-4-port currently is debugged) and the Soundtracker Octamed (a licence for a port to AmigaOS 4 was purchased).

Photographs of the event from Friday and Saturday you can find in the "Epsilon's AmigaOne X1000 Blog".

Update: (16:27, 26.10.14, snx)
On our demand, Ben Hermans (Director Legal, Hyperion Entertainment) made it clear, that actually the "Final Edition" does not require a previously purchased version of AmigaOS 4. A press release is being prepared.

2nd update: (16:57, 29.10.14, snx)
Additional photos have been published by Mike Brantley. Furthermore the leader of the AmigaOS 4 development team, Steven Solie, has stated that also owners of an AmigaOne X1000 will have to pay for the Final Edition of AmigaOS 4.1. Originally, at purchase of the computer customers were promised that AmigaOS 4.2 would be included. Besides this, mentioning of PageStream seems to have been by error of the reporter, since Steven Solie is not aware of it. (snx) (Translation: dr)

PPC-Hardware: Sam460cr ("cost reduced")
Acube has announced, that it was decided to offer a version of the Sam460, which does not include built-in graphic, sound and SATA chips. Many customers would have used more powerful hardware using PCI(e) plug-in cards. Additionally the PPC-motherboard can be offered cost reduced.

In the ACube-shop the new version still is not available but the external supplier comsytec.eu offers both versions for the following prices:
  • SAM460CR 1.10GHz: 622,80 Euro
  • SAM460EX 1.15GHz: 719 Euro
According to information of an Amiga user, the price does not include a OS4-licence and the motherboards also are not on hand in the shop. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Lua-Interpreter with arbitrary-precision arithmetic
Version 5.2.3 of the interpreter for the programming language Lua was copmpiled by 'Thorham' using arbitrary-precision arithmetic-support.

AmigaOS 3.x and a 68020-processor are required. It does not require a FPU or the ixemul.library. Loading dynamic libraries still was not implemented in this version.

The programm can be started using the Workbench or the command line. In the command line you have to add the parameter "-l mapm" in order to use the maths library for the arbitrary-precision arithmetic.

Example code:
mapm.digits(100)
a=mapm.sqrt(12345)
b=mapm.sqrt(54321)
print(a*b)
c=mapm.number(1)
d=mapm.number(3)
e=c/d
print(e*d)
Commands like mapm.sin or mapm.cos also can be used.

Individual Computers: RapidRoad USB starts shipping on October 20
Press release: The new High-speed USB host controller "RapidRoad" by Individual Computers will start shipping on october 20th, 2014.

RapidRoad uses the USB Stack Poseidon, which we have purchased as a source code license back in october 2011. Now we're making use of this license and fill a huge gap in the market of Amiga hardware that has existed for a few years now. RapidRoad is based on a High-speed USB host controller chip that has not been used for the Amiga before.

Although the ISP1763a can be considered the "little brother" of the chip that has been used on the fastest USB controller to date - Deneb by E3B - it can keep up with its performance: If the X-Surf 100 is operated in Z3 mode and a high-end accelerator is used, transfer rates from USB mass storage devices can exceed 7 MBytes per second.

RapidRoad can also be used for the "smaller" Amiga models, which replaces the famous "Subway" controller by E3B. Many older Amiga models are showing timing glitches on the clockport interface when larger amounts of data are transferred, so we had to develop a special interface that can safely deal with these timing glitches. This development has consumed lots of time and money, so we've decided to offer RapidRoad in a cheaper version that has the clockport interface deactivated: This version can only be used on the X-Surf 100 networking card.

Starting today, RapidRoad can be ordered in three different versions with different included cables. Please mind that if you want to pay with PayPal, you may get an error message where no real error has occured. Before you try again, please check your PayPal account: Most of the times, the order went through OK, and only the instant payment notification from PayPal did not reach our server. If the transaction is shown in your PayPal account, everything has worked out right. We're already working on a solution to this problem. (snx)

Amiga-Emulator: FS-UAE 2.5.19dev
Frode Solheim's FS-UAE for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and BSD is based on WinUAE and can be completely controlled with a joypad. Since the last stable version released in March (2.4.1), so far only developer versions have been released.

If you use FS-UAE for emulating a PPC-Amiga, you should also update the plugin to version 3.3.0qemu2.1.0.

Changes in FS-UAE 2.5.19dev:
  • Restore kickstart ROM when CSMK3/CSPPC/BPPC maprom is disabled.
  • New PPC lock implemented, fixes occasional PPC lockup.
  • Fix crash during PPC reset (missing lock when memory regions were updated).
  • Stop PPC CPU before resetting Amiga.
  • Floating point fixes for PowerPC hosts.
  • New options cpu, fpu, mmu, changes to how CPU is configured.
  • Defaults for fpu, mmu, cpu speed, cpu accuracy, blitter mode now automatically depends on specified (or implied) cpu option. Example, cpu = 68040 will automatically enable 68040 FPU (and MMU), set fastest possible mode, less compatible CPU and enable waiting blits.
  • A3000/A4000 models now use waiting blits by default (was immediate).
  • Fix reset problem while PPC CPU is active.
  • Workaround for Hexagons Joystick Adapter (name is a single non-ASCII letter).
  • Workaround for SDL 2 XInput Controller names with #x in the name.
  • Recognize --version and --help arguments.
  • The bitmap fonts are also now loaded from fs-uae.dat.
  • Don’t add RTC module on stock A600, A1200 (exp) defaults to MSM6242B.
  • Fixed loading CD into drive from CD image list (full path wasn’t resolved).
  • Added new boolean option uaenative_library.
  • Updated emulation core from WinUAE 2900b19.
  • Fixed launcher net play GUI (broken in dev versions since the move to QT).
  • FS-UAE Arcade: Fixed bug when using two identical joystick devices.
  • FS-UAE Arcade: Fixed bug preventing joystick hats from being usable for navigation.
  • FS-UAE Arcade: Added quick workaround for configuration of “XInput Controller #x”.
