Individual Computers: Hardware and software upgrade for the C-One
Press release The C-One is unique with its architecture until today: The central components can re-configure each other while the machine is running. If you wanted to do this with a traditional computer, you would have to exchange PCI cards or even the processor while it is turned on. The process took a few seconds, reminding the user of the speed of computers of the 80's. Although the C-One always aimed at resembling computers of that decade, that kind of speed is not acceptable for a current machine. FPGA developer Tobias Gubener has re-written the startup-procedure of the C-One (comparable to the BIOS of a normal PC) from scratch to overcome this.

The new software is called "Newboot" and it is free to every C-One owner. It is not necessary to work on the C-One's hardware, as it is just a flash upgrade. Still, the performance of the new startup is stunning. Instead of the elderly 80's design, the C-One now welcomes you with a graphical menu and almost triple speed. While browsing through the menus, the FPGAs on the board are re-configured a number of times without the user even noticing. With Newboot, the C-One has made the final step to everyday-usability after a development time of five years.

With the FPGA Extender card that is available since yesterday, the C-One even overcomes the limitation of emulating only 8-bit systems. Tobias Gubener has ported Dennis van Weeren's Minimig as a first demonstration of the new capabilities: In addition to VIC-20, C64 and Amstrad CPC, the C-One can now run 32-bit systems like the Amiga. The FPGA capacity of the C-One is increased almost by a factor of five with the extender board! The technical data in short:
  • Cyclone 3 FPGA in 65 nanometer technology
  • 16 MByte RAM with up to 333 MByte per second data rate
  • Stereo delta-sigma audio converter
  • Two crystals for exact PAL and NTSC clocks
  • High-bandwidth interface to the C-One
  • Simple installation without soldering
  • Price: 99 EUR (*)
New C-One boards are sold with the extender-card pre-installed for 333 EUR (*). You can find more pictures and information on the website of the C-One.

(*) Recommended retail price including German sales tax of 19%. Prices at our retail partners may vary. For mail ordering, shipping may be added. (snx)

MorphOS: MPlayer 1.0-svn-2008.11.09
Fabien "Fab" Coeurjoly has published an update of his MorphOS-port of the media player MPlayer (screenshot). Changes in this version:
  • Updated to 09.11.2008 svn (r27902). To be noted it at least fixes some recently introduced issue with some mpeg4 files (googlevideo for instance).
  • More work on GUI module:
    • Option to resize window to original movie dimensions (or 50%/200%).
    • Record option to dump a netstream (only works for cached streams for now).
    • Directories can now be dropped to main window/playlists, or opened from menu.
    • Shuffle option in playlist.
    • Metadata title field is displayed in status string, if available
    • ICY information (shoutcast) displayed in status string, if available.
    • Some files would sometimes be skipped in playlist. Fixed.
    • Reworked a bit GUI show/hide behaviour.
    • GUI can now be started in fullscreen (-fs/fs=1)
    • Status string was refreshed more than necessary.
  • General fixes:
    • Increased a bit audio buffer length with ao_ahi driver.
    • There could be some "hickup at start" effect when playing a new file in playlist. Fixed.
    • Snapshot filenames are truncated (if necessary) to preserve indexes.

AmigaOS 4: Web-Browser OWB 2.15
Jörg Strohmayer has published a new version of his port of the Origyn Web Browser (screenshot). The Cairo-library has been linked with the program. That means OWB 2.15 can be also used under AmigaOS 4.0 again. The changes in detail:
  • The CONFIRMQUIT tooltype was only checked for the quit menu but not for the close menu when the last window is closed, fixed (bugs.os4depot.net issue #44)
  • Using version 2.7.1 of libxml2 instead of 2.7.2 again, should fix some crashes
  • Built the current versions of libcairo and libpixman-1 as static link libraries, with the static libraries OWB works on AmigaOS 4.0 again.
  • OWB 2.15 is linked with static libraries. Might fix the startup crashes I never get on my systems, but could cause even more crashes since most of the static versions of the libraries I have are older than the shared versions and very likely have more bugs.
