Hallo Otis

Du hattest im Thread "Linux SuSE PPC 7.3 Update" nach einer Lösung zum Problem gefragt, dass sich das neue MacOS10.1 nicht mit SuSE Linux 7.3 verträgt. Wie sich nun kürzlich auf der Debian-PowerPC Liste herausgestellt hat, ist dies nicht ein Problem von GNU/Linux, sondern liegt an MacOS 10.1. Falls Du nämlich für GNU/Linux eine eigene Platte eingerichtet hast, und dort keine Apple Driver Partitionen mehr drauf hast (was ja der Normalfall ist, wenn Du GNU/Linux auf einer separaten Platte installierst), erkennt MacOS 10.1 diese Platte nicht als benutzt an, und versucht sie zu initialisieren, bzw. zerstört die darauf eingerichtete bootstrap-Partition. Dies betrifft aber nicht nur Dein SuSE Linux 7.3, sondern alle Linux for PPC, denn das Problem liegt an MacOS X und nicht an Linux!

After I got ybin to work such that holding down option at boot time does
bring up the icon for linux without crashing, I've had no troubles with
booting linux by clicking the icon from that boot select screen. Even
after I upgraded to OS 10.1. I suspect you may be forgetting having run
a possibly newly upgraded ybin just prior of after your move to 10.1.
Frankly I've found 10.1 to work no differently than 10.0.4 as far as
linux is concerned.
I do run 9.2, 10.1, debain woody all on the same 10gb drive in an
iBook[2]. Different configuration may behave entierly differently of
course.

the boot select menu is very slow to allow mouse input though. It pops
up in 1 second, draws all 3 icons in another second, then sort of
doesn't allow you to click for 5 seconds; which is irritating, but no
different than before 10.1

James,
The amount of grief you'll get from upgrading MacOS X 10.0.4 to 10.1
depends on where your linux partitions are located. If you are sharing
a drive already between linux and MacOS X you'll be okay. However if like
me you have a separate linux only drive, 10.1 will cause you major grief.
To keep MacOS X 10.1 from asking to format the linux drive constantly you
need a full set of MacOS driver partitions on the linux drive as well
as a mountable Apple_HFS partition. This is in addition to any Apple_Bootstrap
partitions you have.
If you don't have MacOS driver partitions left on your linux only
drive (as I did since I deleted them) you will have to jump through some
hoops to get them back on it.

Hoffe, dies hilft Dir, Otis. Also, einfach Platte von MacOS aus formatieren, eine kleine HFS-Partition und eine grosse Partition für Linux drauf einrichten, dann im Linux-Installer diese einte Partition (die die ganze Platte einnimmt, natürlich nicht ganz, MacOS legt ja noch die normalerweise unsichtbaren Driver- usw. Partitionen an, sowie die kleine HFS-Partition) für die Linux-Installation anwählen.

Hallo AndiW,
ich danke Dir für Deine Auskunft, was bist Du Gut in Deinem
Wissen.
Das ist genau mein Problem , das ich unter Mac OS X habe.
Ich werde es am nächsten Wochende noch einmal
probieren.

Ps. Unser erste Vorsitzender ist selber bei Linux beschäftigt
doch er konnte mir auch nicht helfen, die haben nur zwei
PPC Fachleute. !!!!!

Danke danke, ist doch gern geschehen!! Ich bin immer froh, wenn ich Leuten helfen kann.

Hmm, irgendwie schon schade, dass es bei SuSE nur 2 PPC-Leute gibt, dabei wäre dies eine so tolle Platform.
