Aminet: Status Update
September last year wuarchive.wustl.edu, the server hosting the main Aminet archive us.aminet.net, went down due to a broken RAID controller. Since then, Aminet doesn't accept uploads.
Despite the original announcement that wuarchive.wustl.edu would only host "sponsered" archives once the server would be up and running again, us.aminet.net went back online November last year. Uploads are still not being processed though.
Approached by amiga-news.de, Mark Bober from Washington University (wuarchive.wustl.edu) explained that the backup that was used to re-establish us.aminet.net is incomplete - several scripts are broken or missing. This information has been forwarded to Aminet admin Urban Mueller, who will be cooperating with Mark Bober to repair the damage on Aminet's main server or help to establish a new main server.
Further news will be announced soon. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Compiler: vbcc 0.8h released
The C compiler vbcc by Volker Barthelmann (compiler kernel) and Frank Wille (Amiga specific adaptions) is available as version 0.8h. The compiler supports ISO-C following ISO/IEC 9899:1989 and a part of the newer standard ISO/IEC 9899:1999 (C99).
The main changes:
- M68k code generator: Fixed -O2 optimizer bug with switch statements
- Any register can be selected to hold a function's return value
- Preprocessor (ucpp) supports the #warning directive
- Improved linker script for OS4: allows linking with CODE, DATA, BSS and unnamed sections (from 68k hunk objects). Fixed _LinkerDB definition
- M68k- and MorphOS-headers must not contain inline code for MUI_NewObject(), which confuses the preprocessor
- vclib: Improved precision for ASCII to floating point conversions in vfscanf()
- vclib: A set error indicator in the stream no longer blocks further read/write/seek operations
- vsend crashed when trying to break with ctrl-c
- vasm: Fixed problem with small data mode and 68k hunk objects
- vasm's new option -opt-fconst automatically optimizes float constants to a lower precision when possible. Enabled this in vbcc's 68k scripts
- vlink bug fixes: PHDR definition, 64k segment alignment for PPC/ELF, absolute symbols in hunk format, etc.

Computer- & Videobörse on March, 5th and 6th in Bremen
On March, 5th and 6th takes place the Computer- & Videobörse in Bremen
in the Bürgerzentrum in the Neuen Vahr once again.
Jörg Dittmar wrote about it: "We, the 'Users der Nordseeküste' will be there, too, and will showcase our computers. Next to the new AmigaOne of Ralf 'Mika' Tönjes, I - Jörg 'the_last_Amiganer' Dittmar - will be there with my Pegasos 2 again. Let's see whether it will work out all right with the new BurnIT 3.0?
Of course there will be our little Amiga but also PCs and numerous Macs. We hope for the appearance of Michael Garlich (Titan Computer) and some more faces known from the Amiga and Pegasos scene. In October, KDH-Datentechnik made a short visit.
The consumers area of the fair won't be neglectable, too. There are always some good things to get but also monitors, LCDs, hard discs, memory, and so on, new as well as used - the visit will be worth it in any case.
The entrance will cost 4 Euros respectively 3 Euros with special ticket. Parking possibilities are plenty in the multi-storey car-park." (snx) (Translation: wk)

Ambient source code under GPL released
The source code of the current version 1.40 Workbench replacement Ambient by David 'Zapek' Gerber was released today under the GPL.
The latest released version of Ambient together with MorphOS 1.4.2 was V1.29. Next to this the author has set up a Paypal link for users who want to give as a thank you for the release a small donation.
Some features of the current v1.40:
- MUI-based: The user interface toolkit is MUI (Magic User Interface). It is one of the most flexible and powerful out there. Every window is resizeable thanks to the built-in layout engine. Moreover, the user can change the look of the interface himself. No need to hardcode settings from the main program.
- Multi-threaded: The whole design of Ambient is asynchronous. One of the key point during the development was that Ambient must never look busy and keep reacting whatever happens. Each job that has a locking possibility (eg. I/O) or can take some time is scheduled to a thread that handles it separately. Conditions which usually upset other desktops, like a network device being unreachable, are not a problem for Ambient.
- Various icon formats: Ambient handles a numerous format of icons: the original Amiga format, the MagicWB variant with proper remapping, the 256 colors indexed Newicons, the 256 colors indexed Glowicons and its own true color format with alpha based on PNG. Creating an icon is easy, use your favorite paint package and save the icon as PNG.
- Truecolor rendering: There is no support for CLUT (paletted) modes. This simplifies the internal design greatly as Ambient does quite a lot of graphics processing. 8-bit screens are a thing of the past and not worth supporting with current hardware.
- 64 Bit arithmetic: 64-bit arithmetic is used for operations related to storage and file handling. Large disks and large files are handled properly.
- Localisation: Ambient uses a so-called catalog system which means all its strings can be fetched from some external source if the desired language is different than English.
- Fast I/O: Ambient is very efficient regarding I/O operations and is finetuned to common storage speeds. Its buffers automatically adapt themselves to the given situation.
- Built-in disk-formatting: Actual formatting of disk partitions can be done from Ambient. The various modes includes quick format, full format and a complex verification format.
- Different file views: Depending on the media content, a different view can be used. For example an icon view with thumbnails, a list view showing most attributes of files, a view showing pictures. Everything is possible and views are pluggable modules.
- File handling: Each media can be handled differently depending on its mimetype. Ambient allows to configure exactly what to do with a given media. For example you might want to run some player tool when double clicking on a sound file or use Ambient's built in replayer.
- Panels: Ambient offers a quick way of creating panels and populating them with programs or applets. There're various options to configure the look and the behaviour of each panel.
- Visual effects: Ambient has various visual effects to make things nifty and smooth. They are heavily optimized to avoid any impact on the general responsiveness. High quality resizing, alpha effects, blurring, .. they all take advantage of MorphOS' graphics subsystem: CyberGraphX.
- ARexx support: There's a built in ARexx port which offers scripting support. Ambient uses these commands itself and allows scripts to perform various tasks.
- Sound engine: Ambient features a built-in sound engine with drivers and API. It allows to play various sounds easily and offers asynchronous modes.
- Hardware support: Ambient uses Altivec optimized code and takes advantage of the streaming features offered by the Pegasos 2 MPX bus.
This release has been made possible also by Oliver Wagner and Stefan Stuntz, who gave David Gerber the permission for a few include files and parts of code. (snx) (Translation: wk)

Position Taken on MUI Version 4 for MorphOS
Under the title link you'll find that MUI's developer Stefan Stuntz has articulated his viewpoint of the situation between his user interface and the MorphOS operating system.
In this communication Ralph Schmidt's statement (amiga-news.de reported) is confirmed, that there was an offer to make the new and future versions of MUI available to Genesi at no charge and also to offer them in shareware form to users of AmigaOS 3.X and OS4.
Further, MUI V4 is nearly completed and there is nothing legally binding that prohibits uniform versions being released for all three of the cited operating systems. (snx) (Translation: dm)
