AmigaOS 4: Aquaria ported (beta version)
Aquaria (screenshot) is a commercial 2d-action-adventure published by Bit Blot for Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Andrea Palmatè has ported this game also to AmigaOS 4 which can be downloaded as beta version under the title link.

The archive includes the demo version of the game. The complete version must be bought from Bit Blot.

System requirements:
  • An Amiga NG (SAM, micro-A1, A1, Pegasos 2)
  • 512 MB of RAM (1 GB reccomended)
  • A video card with at least 64 MB of RAM (128 MB recommended to play the game correctly)
  • Latest SDL library (included in the package)
  • OpenAL (the included one does cause an error at exit of the program)
  • MiniGL 2.2 (included in the package)
Known problems:
  • If you have a system with 512 MB and 64 MB video RAM, it is better to close all programs before running Aquaria. Use also a 16 Bit Workbench screen with compositing effects off to save Video RAM
  • You could get trashed textures in the menu (and also during the game). This means that you are out of memory (video and/or system). The game is still playable but you should free something before continuing to play. A video card with 128 MB of RAM should cure all problems. Otherwise, if this happens you can close the game and restart from a saved location
  • When you push escape key during the game the machine could freeze. I don't know why but i have nothing on the serial debug output and I don't know why it does freeze

Videos and pictures of VCF, AmigaOne X1000 Status
On Saturday in Bletchley (Great Britain) the 25th anniversary of the Amiga was celebrated. Meanwhile some pictures (1, 2, 3, 4) and videos (Youtube: 1, 2, 3, 4) were published which focus on Sam460 and AmigaOne X1000 computers. On both computers AmigaOS 4 was demonstrated.

According to Trevor Dickinson of A-EON during his presentation of the AmigaOne X1000 (Youtube: part 1, part 2), AmigaOS 4 runs on the computers for a while but only as of recently the computer boots from a harddrive. The price of the complete system will be about 1800 Euro.

On pictures and videos it is to be seen that the graphic output is very slow and that PCI-based model is used. According to Stéphane "sg2" Guillard from the AmigaOS 4-team on amigaworld.net this is not a general driver problem: his X1000 has a PCIe-Radeon graphic board and SATA-drives. (cg) (Translation: dr)

A-EON Technology: Varisys hardware partner
Press release:

A-EON and Varisys announce partnership

London, 17th June 2010 - A-EON Technology CVBA and Varisys Ltd., are pleased to announce their partnership in the development of the AmigaOne X1000 hardware platform for AmigaOS.

Varisys Ltd. were identified as the ideal hardware partner for the ambitious project to create a new, genuinely modern computer system to run AmigaOS 4.x in late 2008, even before the formal creation of A-EON Technology. In early 2009, Varisys Ltd. began work on developing a new PowerPC based motherboard, codenamed Nemo, which would form the heart of the new AmigaOne X1000 computer.

After months of design and testing, Varisys delivered the first Nemo prototypes in late 2009 and have now completed a Revision 2 design, which will be supplied to beta testers under the recently announced Extended Beta Test Program.

A-EON Technology director Trevor Dickinson said: "We are very pleased to reveal Varisys as our AmigaOne X1000 hardware partner. They have a proven track record for delivering high quality products on time and to budget. Their extensive experience with PowerPC and parallel processing solutions makes them our ideal technical partners, and with their help we can revitalise the AmigaOne platform".

Varisys Managing Director Paul Gentle said: "We are equally pleased to be working with A-EON Technology and we believe our previous background and experience will prove vital in helping to make the AmigaOne X1000 a success." Adam Barnes, Varisys co-founder, added: "The Nemo motherboard design introduced some new and interesting technical challenges but we are extremely pleased with the results. Revision 2 of the Nemo board has recently been completed and will form a solid foundation for the A1-X1000 and beyond."

Visitors to the VCF Exhibition at Bletchley Park on Saturday, June the 19th, will be able to meet some of the Varisys team on the joint A-EON Technology / Hyperion Entertainment stand.

About Varisys Ltd.
Varisys is a producer of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) products and provider of bespoke hardware design and manufacturing services for industrial and embedded computing applications. The High Wycombe, UK, based company was founded in 2000 by Paul Gentle and Adam Barnes, and since then has earned a reputation for delivering high-quality products with a specialisation in PowerPC and FPGA hardware. Varisys have customers in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, military applications and telecommunications, and are perhaps best known for their development of the PowerPC G4 motherboard used in the immensely popular WholeHog III lighting control console. For more information, see the Varisys website.
