Game development: IFF/ILBM exporter for Aseprite
Aseprite is an image editor that is primarily intended for drawing and animating pixel graphics for games. However, as already mentioned in our article about the dungeon crawler "The CTHUHLU Project", it is not possible to export graphics in IFF/ILBM format. To solve this problem, Prismatic Realms has now released a script to convert graphics into an IFF/ILBM file. This makes the use of additional programmes or online conversion tools unnecessary.
The project is in development. Although it should work well in most cases, it currently has no options. If anyone encounters problems or has suggestions, please contact the author for feedback. Currently there are the following limitations:
- Images exported with this script do not currently support compression. If problems occur or the file size is too large, the author recommends loading the exported file into Deluxe Paint V and saving it again from there.
- To be able to export an image from Aseprite, the colour mode of the sprite must be set to "Indexed" and the colour palette must consist of exactly 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 or 256 colours.
The script can be added via the menu File --> Scripts --> Open Scripts Folder. A registered version is required. (dr)

Alinea Computer: New products and firmware updates
Press release: Alinea Computer presents three new products:
Joyport Power-Adapter (power thief)
With the Joyport Power-Adapter (power thief), external 5V devices can be operated via the Amiga. The joystick port of the Amiga is looped through. A USB socket is available as an interface via which, for example, the Wodem or the KickRom-Progger can be supplied with Storm via a MicroUSB cable. According to the specification, a maximum of 50 mA current can be drawn via the joystick port of the Amiga, so no power-hungry devices such as mobile phones etc. should be connected there. The Joyport Power-Adapter is available for 9,99 Euro.

Fan power adapter
With the fan power adapter, 5V/12V fans can be supplied with power internally via the Amiga on the disc drive power cable. Available for 4,99 Euro.

Flash adapter for classic programming devices
With the flash adapter (48 pin), the KickRom flash modules can also be programmed with a classic programming device. Here, all connections are passed through 1:1. The adapter was successfully tested on a Batronix Battego II BX48. An optional zero-force base can be ordered in addition to the adapter. Available for 14,95 Euro.
Additionally, the firmware of the KickRom-Progger was updated to version 1.0.9 (changelog) and of the Amega 32 Adapter to v1.4.5 (changelog). (dr)

Floppy disk images on PC and Mac: Greaseweazle V4.1
Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" reads the magnetic layers of the disks independently of the used disk format and saves as much information as possible in a so called "Flux Level Image" in the Supercard-Format (SCP) which enables reading and writing copy-protected disks. Greaseweazle consists of a mikro controller board that costs only a few euros which is connected to a disks drive and then via USB to the PC. V4.1 is the very latest version, updating the V4 design with new features:
- Larger form factor with stronger mounting holes
- Modern USB-C connector
- Input protections (ESD, over-current)
- USB power isolation, allows Greaseweazle to be powered by external PSU along with drive(s)
The new version is already available in his eBay shop and should also be listed in other stores in the next few days. (dr)

Module player: NostalgicPlayer 2.1.0 for Windows
NostalgicPlayer is a program for playing Amiga music modules under Windows, based on APlayer. The development of the player had been started by the author Thomas Neumann in 1993 on the Amiga, later continued on BeOS and now on Windows (amiga-news.de reported). Changes of version 2.1.0:
- Some synthesis sounds in StarTrekker did not play.
- Made the SidSongLength reader in SidPlay more robust for syntax errors in the file.
- When some agents was marked as disabled in the settings, they was not disabled again the next time NostalgicPlayer starts.
- If double buffering is on and you have the settings open and showing either Formats or Players tab, then the previous module agents will not be black again when NostalgicPlayer automatically switch to the next module.
- The sample visualizers, e.g. Oscilloscope and Spectrum Analyzer, only shows 20 ms of sample data each frame. The audio core output agent have a latency of 200 ms, which means the visualizers only show the last 20 ms. That could be visible sometimes, depending on the music playing. Now the audio core agent latency has been decreased to 20 ms, so all samples are visible in the visualizers now. If you experience that the sound stutters and you do not mind the scopes are not that precisely, you can try to increase the latency in the Core Audio settings.
- Added new option in the Core Audio output agent to set the latency between 20 and 200 ms.
- Can now show pictures if available in the module information window. The following formats supports this at the moment: MP3, Ogg Vorbis and FLAC.
- Wrote my own control to display comments and lyrics in the module information window. Now each line is right under each other and special characters are displayed correctly. This makes graphics made in e.g. comments look as they should.
- Moved some of the options in the settings window into its own Modules tab.
- Added a new option telling the order on how to activate tabs in Module Information window.
- Updated libFLAC to version 1.4.3, which now support 32-bit formats for both decoding and encoding.
- Updated Ancient to version 2.1.1.
- Updated NAudio to version 2.2.0.
- Updated SharpCompress to version 0.34.0.
- Added these new module formats: Audio Sculpture and OggMod.
- Added Xmp player, which uses the libXmp library. Then moved these formats from MikMod to Xmp, which should play them more correctly: Asylum, Composer 669, Digital Sound And Music Interface, Digital Sound Interface Kit, Farandole Composer, FastTracker II, General DigiMusic, Imago Orpheus, Impulse Tracker, Scream Tracker 2, Scream Tracker 3, Scream Tracker Music Interface Kit, UltraTracker, Unis 669 and Unreal Music File.
- Renamed Asylum to Asylum Music Format.
- Renamed Unreal Music File to Epic Games UMX.
- Renamed Digital Sound Interface Kit to Digital Sound Interface Kit RIFF.
- Removed MikMod converter and player. This also removes support for UniMod modules. They couldn't be played correctly anyway, so I guess no harm is done by that.
An installation package can be found on Microsoft Store. (dr)

Development tool: vasm 1.9f
Frank Wille has published an update of the modular assembler vasm. Changes of version 1.9f:
- Fix relative section offset directives, which must be unsigned to work correctly over the whole target's address space.
- Fixed a few issues with named macro arguments.
- Do not warn about missing references to Common or Weak symbols.
- Binary output modules allow addresses outside of the backend's address space.
- m68k: MOVEM (An),An/Am must not be optimized into two MOVE instructions. This was a new bug in V1.9e.
- std-syntax: Fixed binary constant 0b...., which was erroneously mistaken for a one-digit temporary label destination since V1.9a.

Creating Amiga Reaction GUIs: ReBuild 0.10 (alpha version)
Darren 'dmcoles' Coles is in the process of writing a remake of ClassMate called "ReBuild", which should make it possible to write graphical user interfaces for ReAction, the evolution of ClassAct.
When asked about the motivation behind this project, the developer explained that ClassMate is only available in a demo version without a save function and with very limited options. He had asked around and could not find a registered version, so it seems to be lost. He had therefore decided to develop a new tool based on the original design.
This version is completely written in Amiga E and already has more functions than the original, for example:
- multiple window capability
- C and E code generation
- temporary copy buffer
- menus are shown on the preview window
- much more flexible system of reordering the gadgets
In the past, he continues, he has used MUIBuilder to help create MUI code, and he felt that something similar for ReAction would be useful for himself as well as other developers. Currently, his tool does not yet support the newer Reaction gadgets, but there are plans to add them.
The next steps involve first reviewing all the current code to ensure that the application runs correctly on the standard Amiga screen resolution as currently some settings pages do not fit. Then the gadgets not supported in ClassAct will be added. The developer would appreciate help to test the generated C code with different compilers (currently only with SAS C). An icon is also needed, which he would like to put in the hands of capable graphic designers/artists.

Dungeon Crawler: "The Cthulhu Project" (DevLog 1)
Maurice Doerr is not only a photographer, but has also been a passionate Amiga user since 1987. Over the years he has owned several models such as the A500, A600, A1200 and the CD32 and programmed in Assembler, AMOS, Amiga E and Blitz Basic. After a long break and separation from all hardware, he returned to the Amiga about a year ago and started programming his first "Dungeon Crawler Oldschool" game based on the Lovecraft universe in AMOS PRO.
Since then, he has provided insights into the current state of development in numerous YouTube videos. Yesterday, he published the first part of a DevLog series under the title link, in which he provides general information about the project.
As he explained to us, he chose AMOS PRO because it was the perfect tool to develop these kinds of games on the Amiga. He uses Aseprite on the PC for pixel art graphics. The only weak point is that it can't handle IFF, which is why he wrote a BMP -> IFF converter to allow a smoother and faster workflow. Basically, his game engine is already very advanced, but features such as sound, which he does not compose himself, are still missing. (dr)

Do it yourself: Revision 4.0.1 of N2630 expansion board for Amiga 2000
Parallel to his project of a replica of the A2000 motherboard in ATX form factor, "Amiga-2000-ATX" (amiga-news.de reported), the developer Jason 'jasonsbeer' Neus has another one : the N2630 is a further development of the original Commodore A2630 expansion card, offering an Amiga 2000 a 50MHz Motorola 68030 CPU card with additional RAM and IDE device connector, and is installed in the CPU slot (amiga-news.de reported).
The now published documents of the new production revision 4.0.1a/b offer two interesting changes: on the one hand revision 4.0.1b supports the 68882 PGA footprint and revision 4.0.1a the PLCC footprint. On the other hand, the new revision supports the original German A2000 computer (the left side of the board should be marked with "Made In Germany" and "(C) 1986 Commodore"; then it is not a cost-reduced Amiga 2000 board), but this could not be tested yet.
New firmware has also been released. Some bugs have been fixed and the latest firmware is faster and more stable. The following hardware has been tested and works well with the latest firmware:
- A2000 Rev 4.x
- A2000 Rev. 6.x
- A2000 EATX
- A2088
- A2286
- A2091
- RIPPEL
- Oktagon SCSI
- WordSync
- GottaGoFastRam
- Freeway Pro
- XSurf 100
- Ariadne
- GBAPII+
- Opal Vision
- Picasso
- ACE2b Chip-Erweiterung

Operating system for Amiga 3000/4000: Status update of "Apollo"
About a year ago, we reported on the start of Dietmar Planitzer's project to write "Apollo", an experimental operating system for the Amiga 3000/4000. We asked the developer what the current status of the work is, and he kindly summarised the following for us:
"Apollo is at the beginning of a (long) journey. At the moment the basics of an operating system exist, which can run in an Amiga with a 68030 processor and at least 256 KB of main memory. However, the operating system must be stored in a ROM chip that replaces the standard ROM found in an Amiga.
What can you do with Apollo at the moment?
As a user, not very much. You can enter text interactively like in a text editor and enjoy how the machine reacts to every keystroke with the output of a beautiful letter :)
As a developer/hobby programmer, there are more interesting things to discover: Apollo is a preemptive multi-tasking operating system that, like POSIX, supports a process hierarchy and makes resources accessible using a general "file descriptor" model. As in typical POSIX systems, there is a clear separation between kernel and user space (where programmes are executed).
However, multi-tasking works differently than in the original Amiga OS or a typical POSIX system: Apps create and manage so-called threads in these systems in order to achieve multi-tasking. Threads allow a programme to execute things in parallel. The problem with this traditional model is that programs typically (directly or indirectly) create many of these threads and most of them spend most of their time sleeping.
Apollo has no threads. Instead, it has "virtual processors" and "dispatch queues". A virtual processor is similar to a thread, but it does not belong to a specific application. Virtual processors can be moved between applications by Apollo as required. Applications use dispatch queues to tell Apollo what they want to execute in parallel. Dispatch queues are similar to the dispatch queues found in macOS, but unlike macOS, Apollo is built entirely from the ground up around dispatch queues.
What else does Apollo offer?
There is a console that supports keyboard and mouse input as well as the widest possible VT100-compatible output to the screen. There are the beginnings of a general "device driver manager", i.e. a component that recognises hardware and manages it. Hardware such as the keyboard, mouse, joystick, memory expansions, floppy drives, etc. can be recognised and managed.
There is also the beginning of a standard library for the C programming language to write (small) programmes for Apollo.
Next steps
The most important next step is the implementation of a file system for floppies and then hard discs. Also the implementation of a (simple) shell to be able to execute programmes. These components should make Apollo a little more interesting for users.
Further plans include things like "protected memory" and "pagging/swapping" and support for other 68030 systems like Atari TT & Falcon." (dr)

CLI command: sysvars V0.10
The sysvars command creates environment variables with system information in order to make it dependent on these, for example, in the startup sequence, which patches are included. So far there is information on the CPU and FPU, the chipset, the vertical frame rate (PAL/NTSC) as well as whether the emulator UAE is used - and if so, in which version.
Version 0.10 provides the following changes:
- Added $KickVer and $KickEnv that provide kickstart version and revision
- $UAE is now split in $UAEMajor, $UAEMinor and $UAERev for more convenient scripting
- Added detection of bsdsocket.library ($BSDSockLib contains the id string, $BSDSockLibVer the version, and $BSDSockRev the revision)
- Refactoring and code improvements (still learning though)
- Easy way to disable certain variables/features at the beginning of the file using constants (Adapt to your need and make the tool as tiny as possible)
- Unified SetVar approach using macros
- Easier integration of new features via consistent scheme
- Better comments
- added test script for startup-sequence

AmigaOS 4: Status update of WebKit port
George 'walkero' Sokianos describes the current status of the Webkit port in a forum post on Amigans (amiga-news.de reported):
"For some time now, the port was around 54% of the WebCore library compilation. At that point, I was getting around 10K of errors, and I was trying to figure out why this was happening and where exactly was the problem. Just last week, with the help of Kas1e who discovered what was wrong, he found that the problem was a missing curly bracket I stupidly removed a year ago accidentally. By fixing that, I managed to have WebCore library compiling up to 99%.
Actually, I already started working on a minimal window with a web view that will be able to show just one website. That's the next goal."
And Roman 'kas1e' Kargin has added: "the whole webcore is more or less cross-platform, while remain 1% is platform specific: an actual thing to render in, open a window, blit things in, gui, etc, etc. All should be written for OS4. That is harder part and real programming.
Once, George will have a window to which sites render, then - in worse case, even without gui - one can make a binary to which you spend a url and it opens window and render to it. It will be not a browser, but something as a start. At least we can test if core works , how fast, what need to fix, deal with crashes (i am sure there will). The fact that core compiles, doesnt mean all works as expected, it is unknown by now".
In this context, George suggests that another team take over the development of this part of the browser if there are interested parties. The current team could then continue to take care of WebKit, fix problems and keep it up to date.
The main repository can now be found on GitHub under "AmigaLabs". (dr)

Tool: SpriteSplitter V0.4
The basic idea of a spritesheet is to pack a series of images together into a single image. Dan 'zooperdan' Thoresen's "SpriteSplitter" reverses this: it is a simple tool for splitting a spritesheet image into separate images that can be used in the Scorpion Engine. This allows the user to save time when updating spritesheets by automating this process.<
In version 0.4 a -file parameter was added which let you specify a text file which contains a list of command operations. This is much faster than calling SpriteSplitter multiple times. (dr)

Game Construction Kit: RedPill 0.9.27
RedPill, developed by Carlos Peris, is a game construction kit written in Amiblitz 3.98, which allows the development of games from various genres (see short tests of two Redpill games). RedPill is compatible with AGA and ECS, the "player" for playing the finished creations requires a total of 1.5 MB RAM. Jens 'Farbfinsternis' Henschel has written a tutorial.
The new version 0.9.27 now has extensive documentation in both AmigaGuide and HTML format. Likewise, some corrections and optimisations have been made. The changes:
- Remap action trigger added to modify certain frames of the animation.
- Added a level string for each level, right now it is only like a comment for levels.
- When creating the WHDLoad package now you are asked about the slave to use.
- Multiple fixes when changing from level to level in the editor, palette and copper.
- Now you can set the minimum amount of Chip or Fast memory for your game.
- Optimization for loading levels, also reducing the possible glitches when changing level.
- Optimization in scroll routines.
- Changed ptplayer routine to the E-Penguin one.
- Added option to remove cross in the animation menu.
- Pressing fire during text printing speed up the printing.
- Mouse button can be used to close dialogs.
- Fix for dialogs when no scroll is used.
- Fix in use of gradient image for copper background.
- Fix in Answer Question trigger.
- Fix when merging image palette and sprite palette.
- Fix in instantiate attached trigger not getting the right side.
- Fix in the editor when changing to static no non static.
- Fix in turn back not being triggered.
- Fix for QR code in the main screen to find online documentation.

Amiga Tool Jam: AmiAuthenticator v1.0.2 (update)
AmiAuthenticator was also written for the Amiga Tool Jam and is a 2FA (two-factor authentication) code generator for the Amiga that is compatible with many websites that use 2FA. It generates TOTP (Time based one time passwords) codes with SHA1 or SHA256. Similar (non-Amiga) applications are Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator and FreeOTP. These codes can be used to secure access to various websites, e.g. GitHub, LastPass, Amazon, Facebook, Instagram.
Depending on preference or installed GUI, the tool can be started as a MUI-, ReAction- or Gadtools-based version. All versions require at least Kickstart/Workbench 2.0. Since a UTC time source is needed, it is important that the system clock is set accurately and it is preferable to have a real-time clock installed or to synchronise the system with the internet. The source code is available on GitHub.
Update: (31.10.2023, 21:00, dr)

- fixed invalid memory access error on first startup causing a crash for some users
- the items saving was completely broken and was saving blank string

Amiga Tool Jam: DrawerGenie
For the Amiga Tool Jam, which ends tomorrow, numerous contributions have been submitted recently, which we would like to present briefly in individual messages.
Originally running under the working title "Drawer Helper" (amiga-news.de reported), Rob 'daedalus2097' Cranley has released the commodity "DrawerGenie" for AmigaOS 3.5 or higher. DrawerGenie allows you to add simple toolbars to the Workbench drawer windows. These provide some simple DOpus-like Workbench functions, such as defining a target window and sending selected files to it, copying and pasting files, switching view modes, sorting files, handling archives and more. File operations show a progress bar, are asynchronous and can be cancelled.
Drawer Helper was written in AmiBlitz, the source code is available on GitHub.

8-/16-bit emulator for Mac OS and Linux: Clock Signal v2023-10-29
Thomas Harte's Clock Signal is an emulator for various 8- and 16-bit platforms aiming to be invisible to the user. The idea is to simply start the source medium without configuring the emulator oneself. Clock Signal is available for Mac OS and Unix-compatible systems. While there is also an Amiga emulation included, it "remains wilfully inaccurate" for now.
Today, version v2023-10-29 was released. Changes:
- includes fixes to the sequence of addresses accessed by the Apple II for video generation, correcting broken instances of vapour lock;
- includes further build-system fixes that reintroduce support for macOS 10.13; and
- corrects address generation logic for the undocumented 6502 instructions SHS, SHX, SHY and SHA.
