KOSH-summary #21 vom 25.05.1999
KOSH [Kommunity Orientated Software Hardware]

Weekly Summary

Week Commencing: 15th May 1999

Number: 021

Mailing List: kosh-general

In the mailing list this week, the following items were discussed. Please do
not email the scribe regarding any of these topics, it is not his job to answer
these questions but merely to report the topics of conversation. If you have
any queries about this summary, please email ben@kosh.net, stating the Summary
Number, and Mailing List Name, and he will try to answer your queries.

Before I start this summary it is probably worth noting that despite the
shorter length of summaries of the General List these days it does not mean
that KOSH is disappearing. A lot of traffic on particular issues has moved to
other KOSH lists and the KOSH Working Groups are doing exactly that...working.

Send an email to majordomo@kosh.net for further information with "lists"
(without the quotes) in the message body for a list of KOSH Mailing Lists.
Additionally "info <list>" (again ignore the "" and put the name of the list in
between the <>) provides information about any particular list. Note commands
like this -must- be in the message body and -not- on the subject line.

a)

Subject: Open KOSH

Summary of debate: The KOSH project could develop an "open policy" in which we
show all interested people the relative merits of the system
and its disadvantages. At shows this could be done by
demonstrating KOSH boxes next to Windows, MacOS, AmigaOS,
Linux etc showing the strengths and weaknesses of each. The
conclusion of such demonstrations would (hopefully) be that
KOSH is the best system, but if it is weak in any area we
                   should be honest about this.

This attitude amongst KOSH would mean that we would not
gloss over any flaws in KOSH and would actively deal with
                   them in updates.

b)

Subject: Realtime Operating Systems

Summary of debate: A couple of RTOS sites are:
                   http://www.oarcorp.com (68k and PPC support, Ada95
                   crosscompiler) and
http://www.cygnus/com/ecos/ (PPC support, NT4 and Linux
                   development tools).

c)

Subject: Experience of Windows 2000 beta v3

Summary of debate: Someone has posted their experience of the above OS which
could be useful for us from a research point of view; see:
                   http://www.welkin.freeserve.co.uk/win2000/

d)

Subject: KOSH Web Site (mirror) is back

Summary of debate: The site is back at
                   http://www.reading.ac.uk/~ssu97gw/kosh/index.html
This is a mirror and "unofficial" - The main KOSH URL of
http://www.kosh.net remains but may or may not have been
updated by the time you read this.

e)

Subject: Articles for KOSH wanted

Summary of debate: Fleecy and Greg Webb have both asked anyone with any
interesting ideas that they have gathered for KOSH to turn
them into articles (length up to the writer). These can be
posted on the KOSH mirror site (URL under "d" above). Email
greg@gpwebb.freeserve.co.uk if you need any more
                   information.
