Kickflash OS4: Endgültige Produktspezifikationen Aufgrund der großen Nachfrage wurde das am 2. Juni angekündigte Produkt Kickflash OS4 überarbeitet. Die Basisversion ist nun mit 1 MB Flash-Speicher ausgestattet, und kann über einen Erweiterungsport mit bis zu 1 GB Flash-Speicher ausgestattet werden. Die Übertragungsraten sind vergleichbar mit durchschnittlichen Festplatten, jedoch fallen die bei mechanischen Massenspeichern üblichen Zugriffszeiten bei Flash-Speicher praktisch weg: Im wahlfreien Zugriff ist so genannter solid-state-Speicher rund zehntausend Mal schneller als eine Festplatte. Kickflash OS4 ist eine Zorro-Karte, die in Zorro-2 und Zorro-3 Systemen funktioniert. Der neue Basispreis für die Karte ist 34,90 EUR. Preise für Erweiterungen stehen noch nicht fest. Linux-kompatibles 64Bit-Betriebssystem K42 von IBM für PPC K42 ist ein Betriebssystem-Forschungsprojekt unter LGPL, das sich größtenteils auf Skalierbarkeit der Implementation der Kerndienste eines Betriebssystems konzentriert. Wir werden eine kurze Übersicht über das Projekt geben, einige Ergebnisse der letzten Performance-Tests mit 64-bit PPC Linux Programmen vorstellen, und die Unterschiede darstellen, die unsere Implementation von Linux Diensten von der Norm abheben (und dabei hoffentlich alle wirklich offensiven und umstrittenen Methoden behandeln). K42 verwendet "building-block" Technologie, die es Applikationen erlauben, die benötigten OS-Dienste anzupassen und damit zu optimieren. Dies ist besonders wichtig für Applikationen wie Datenbanken und Webserver, die ihre Performance erhöhen können, wenn sie in der Lage sind die physischen resourcen selbst zu steuern. K42 ist portierbar; momentan läuft es auf PowerPC Systemen (sowohl nativ, als auch mit SimOS). Beim Portieren von K42 erlaubt das Design den Programmierern auszuwählen, welche Objekte des Systems auf die jeweilige Architektur angepasst werden, und damit jegliche architekturspezifischen Merkmale auszuschöpfen um die Performance zu erhöhen. We will give a brief overview of the project, discuss some of the recent performance results running 64-bit PPC Linux binaries and discuss the major ways that our implementation of Linux services depart from the norm (hopefully making sure to bring up all the truly offensive and contentious ways). K42 employs building-block technology to allow applications to customize and thus optimize the OS services they require. This is particularly important for applications, such as databases and web servers, where given the ability to control physical resources, they can improve performance. Präsentation von Foto-Foto auf der Amiga Party in Maarssen Auf der Amiga Party 2003, die am 28. Juni im holländischen Maarssen stattfindet, wird das Programmier-Team Attention-Software zum ersten Mal das Spiel Foto-Foto präsentieren. Foto-Foto ist ein Spiel, bei dem aus zwei fast identischen Bildern fünf Unterschiede gefunden werden müssen. Das Spiel selbst läuft lokal, die Fotos aber werden von einer Website bezogen, auf der auch die Highscores gelagert werden. Foto-Foto wird für AmigaOS und MorphOS entwickelt.
