SAM440: Firmware-Update to U-Boot 1.3.1a

ACube Systems is pleased to announce the release of a new version of U-Boot firmware for its line of motherboards Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex.
This version addresses a number of problems and add some features and optimizations making it possible to cut down boot time by 3-12 seconds depending on the configuration of the board.
What's new in this version (for both motherboard versions):
- faster graphic card initialization, now it takes half the time than previous U-Boot version
- unified the first two countdowns, for an even faster boot
- solved compatibility issues with some Radeon 9200 and 9250 gfx cards
- reworked preference menu
Sam440ep miniITX-Version:
- a Radeon HD 2400 graphic card could be now used as secondary gfx card
Sam440ep-flex-Version:
- added support for Silicon Motion 502 graphic card
- added experimental support for Catweasel MK4 controller
- a Radeon HD 2400 graphic card could be now used in both 33 and 66 Mhz PCI slots

Metacompiler: PortablE r5
Christopher Handley's metacompiler PortablE translates the Amiga specific programming language E into different languages. Windows, AmigaOS 3/4, AROS and MorphOS are supported.
Changes in version r5:
- Experimental MorphOS support (for C++), including MOS executables! MUI seems to work
- Modules provided by others for AHI, CD_Play, FreeDB, MPEGA & some MUI bits
- PortablE is up to 65% faster than before
- PortablE's memory usage has been halved! Now similar to GCC's
- MUI programs with custom classes can now be compiled by AmiDevCpp for OS3
- Added emulation of AmigaE's ! (floating-point) operator to the compatibility mode
- FastNew is implemented using an enhanced TLSF algorithm, greatly reducing memory usage
- Programs produced by PortablE run faster, and PEGCC produces smaller executables
- Lists are now truely stack-allocated, rather than being dynamically faked
- Implemented the missing string formatting codes (\l, \r, \z, [w] & (x,y)) for C++
- For speed, multi-threading support is now disabled unless you use OPT MULTITHREADED
- Directory scanning is now much more robust on Windows
- Improved documentation; clickable links, added bold/etc & special characters now visible
- More examples of portable code
- Various bug fixes
Download-Tool: wget 1.12 for AmigaOS 3/4
Diego Casorran has published new ports of the download tool wget:
- URLs in file's comments are now unescaped (eg: %7e -> ~)
- For the first time, added an AmigaOS4 build.
- Compiled using OpenSSL 1.0.0-beta4, download it from
amiga.sourceforge.net if you want SSL support
in Wget - OS4 users need to have AmiSSL installed
Amiga Future: New full versions online

Postscript-Interpreter: GPL Ghostscript 8.70
"whoosh" has published a new version of his Amiga port of Ghostscript. Two different versions are available - one of them requires the ixemul.library and offers all functions. You can find the list of changes, installation hints as well as download links on the website of the author.

OpenPCI: PciTool 2.1.2
PciTool written by Marian 'MaaG^dA' Guc for AmigaOS 3.x and MorphOS provides information about used PCI-cards in a computer system with the openpci.library (from version 2.1).

OpenSSL 1.0-beta4
The OpenSSL-project is a toolkit-implementation of the protocols Secure Sockets Layer (SSL v2/v3) and Transport Layer Security (TLS v1) based on open-source software.

MorphOS: UTF-8 support for AmIRC
Charset-AmIPlug is an AmIRC-Plugin which enables you to convert different character set codes. Mainly this tool is supposed to support UTF-8 (Unicode). In UTF-8-modus ISO-character set codes are automatically recognized and correctly shown.

AROS: CDXLPlay-SDL 1.1 (x86)
Fredrik Wikström has written a command line based SDL program for AROS/x86 with which on an Amiga CDXL-files can be played. CDXL is a file format developed for the Amiga CDTV which is based on the HAM-modus and a direct streaming access of the CD-drive.

AmigaOS 4: New screenshots of Firefox-port Timberwolf
Hans-Jörg and Thomas Frieden are working on a Firefox-port for AmigaOS 4.1 which is called Timberwolf. Today some new screenshots have been published: Four screenshots show the CSS Zen Garden (1, 2, 3, 4), the fifth one shows the Mozilla website.

AmigaOS 4: Seventh update for arcade game BOH
Simone Bevilacqua has published the seventh update for his commercial arcade game BOH which includes the following changes and improvements:
- adds one-way passages
- adds flying enemies
- changes the functioning of teleports: weapons are not inhibited anymore; enemies are not scared away anymore; the activation wait is shorter; enemies are destroyed if they touch the character during teleporting
- improves the visual feedback of hits in theme "vectors"
- increases the intensity of shot lights
- fixes some minor glitches in the themes "C64", "default" and "vectors"
- adds the mission "skill challenge"
- retouches several missions (also making use of one-way passages)
- adds the Norwegian translation
- re-assigns some map characters for an even more logical arrangement and, therefore, an easier development of missions
- adds graying-out of the menu interface when another application gets the focus
- extends/improves the manuals
- applies some other changes/optimizations
BOH is available for AmigaOS 4, AROS, Linux, MacOS X and Windows.

AROS: ZuneARC 1.0 (x86)
ZuneARC is a graphical user-interface for command line based archiver tools under AROS/x86. Supported are LHA, LZX, ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ and TAR.BZ2. Further ones can be added by editing the configuration file.

MorphOS: Patch for DrawStudio
Harry 'Piru' Sintonen has published a patch with which you can use the paint programm DrawStudio under MorphOS 2.x. In version 2.5 of the operating system the reason was found by Jacek 'jacadcaps' Piszczek and should be clearly fixed. Users of SmartWin should deactivate it before.

New Realtek-Network driver for AROS, new Bounty for Realtek ALC888
Franck Charlet has published a new Network driver which supports different Network-controller made by Realtek:
- RTL8168b / RTL8168c / RTL8168cp
- RTL8169 / RTL8169s / RTL8169sb / RTL8169sc
- RTL8110 / RTL8110s / RTL8110sb / RTL8110sc
- RTL8111b / RTL8111c / RTL8111cp
- RTL8100e
- RTL8101e
The driver also complies with conditions of the Realtek RTL8111b bounty which was started by Pascal Papara to get drivers for the Network-controller of the planned AROS complete system AresOne.
Bevause Frank Charlet does not want to make a draft on the donations, the money will be used for a new bounty: A driver for the Soundchip Realtek ALC888 - which is the last component that still is not supported by AROS for the AresOne.

MorphOS: Epson-USB-driver 2.36.1 for SCANdal
Michal 'rzookol' Zukowski who is the author of the scanner software SCANdal, has published an updated driver for the Epson-USB-scaner on Aminet.
A new USB-API is used and the usbraw.device will be no longer required. Because of that the rawwrap.class has to be disconnected from the scanner in the Poseidon-preferences.

Demo scene: aSCIIaRENa
Under the title link Up Rough and Divine Stylers present the aSCIIaRENa which is a website for the ASCII-scene. This site is supposed to be a source for different art of ASCII as well as a database. Additionally a forum, a Tag-Wall and further standard components are available.
A browser with support of embedded character encodings is required. Currently this applies to FireFox 3.5, Internet Explorer 8 and Opera 10.

A free update to Amiga Forever 2009.1.0.0 was released today. New features include Export to Device functionality in RP9 Manager and Now Playing data for use by Skype, Messenger, Twitter and similar plugins. The developer group OnyxSoft has updated six of its programs: AmiVNC4, BackUp, MPlayer-GUI, MultiRen, JoinSplitter, MultiRen and UTF-8.
AmiVNC4 2.2.0 (OS4) Backup program that mirrors a directory structure
Added Zlib support which should speed up transfers a lot on slow networks. Now startable from WB with tooltypes. Should use less CPU and be more responsive when detecting a screen change.
BackUp 1.70 (68k)
Added an option so that you can select that files over a given size should not be copied. Added two options to prevent the setting of Amiga protection bits and Amiga file comments. Fixed a few minor bugs.
MPlayer-GUI 1.46 (OS4) GUI for MPlayer
It is now possible to start MPlayer-GUI with arguments from CLI or WB and files will be added to the GUI that is already opened. Added a Stop button. Added #?.flv to the default file pattern.
MultiRen 1.69 (68k) Powerful multi-file renaming tool using MUI. Has plugin-support for MP3-renaming and more
Fixed drag'n'drop of directories in Ambient. Added some stack to prevent crashes when opening the MUI settings on PPC systems. Minor fixes.
JoinSplitter 1.4 (68k) Split and join files with a GUI
It is possible to have joined files automatically deleted after being joined. Better handling of large files over 2GB, and joining of files that will result in more than 4GB.
UTF-8 1.2 (68k) This program lets you type UTF-8 text everywhere (like in web browser forms for example)
UTF-8 is now a commodity if started from Workbench. From Workbench it reads a few tooltypes.
