Mastodon client: Amidon 1.1
Dimitris 'MiDWaN' Panokostas, author of the Amiga emulator Amiberry, has released version 1.1 of his Mastodon client Amidon for AmigaOS 3 (amiga-news.de reported). Changes:
- Implemented Profile view
- Updated Readme with more details on the requirements
- Added more icons (GlowIcon, MagicWB, 4-color)
- Eliminated the dependency on the MUI Hyperlink class, as it caused issues with some users and it's not part of the MUI 3.9 package.
- Redesigned the Login process, instead of a link to press on, you now have a copy/paste procedure with buttons to help you.
- Only open the Login window if a server name was provided. Otherwise the link would be empty and there wasn't much of a point.
- Fixed a crash when trying to save settings without having logged in first (Anonymous mode).

Floppy disk images on PC and Mac: Greaseweazle Tools 1.10
Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" does - similar to Kryoflux - read the magnetic information on a floppy disk independently from the format used and saves as much information as possible to generate a so-called "Flux Level Image" in Supercard format (SCP), which enables reading and back-writing of copy-protected disks (amiga-news.de reported)
The adapter gets connected between a floppy disk drive - e.g. a standard 3.5" PC one - and a USB port of the PC or Mac. Yesterday version 1.10 of the Greaseweazle Tools was released providing the following changes:
- New diskdef ibm.160
- gw erase: New option --revs=N
- gw read: Fix --retries=0
- MacOS: Explicitly search for CAPS library under /Library/Frameworks
- gw: Minor fixes to flux-to-bitcell conversion
- gw: Disallow abbreviated long option names
- SCP: Fix footer metadata format

AmigaOS 4: Shader player Shaderjoy 1.25
Shaderjoy allows displaying and creating Shadertoy compatible fragment shaders. Fragment shaders, also called pixel shaders, are programs that are executed per fragment (pixel) on the GPU.The ogles2.library 3.2 and Warp3D Nova 54.16 are required. Now Juha "Capehill" Niemimaki has released version 1.25. Changes:
- Add keyboard channel. Also remove some keyboard shortcuts to avoid conflicts.
- Add projects files (.sjp) for those example shaders that require textures.
- Replace text buttons with more compact images.
- Show busy pointer during shader compilation.
- Disable uninitialized variable check (in icon) due to glCompileShader issue with some shaders: future ogles2.library should fix this.
- Fix loading of arexx.class.
- Fix busy looping of ChannelWindows.
- Refactor some GUI code.

Preview video: Amiga port of Breakthru
After the release of the Wonderboy port (amiga-news.de reported), 'acidbottle' now turns its attention to the next Amiga port of a game: Breakthru was released in 1986 by Data East and is a horizontal shoot'em up in which the player controls an armed military vehicle, making his way through enemy forces - consisting of soldiers, flamethrowers, helicopters, tanks, jeeps etc. - to ultimately recover a stolen fighter plane. - to ultimately recover a stolen fighter plane.
The Amiga port will be available for OCS/ECS and AGA Amigas. Area 1 is almost finished, Area 2 and 3 are currently in progress. As the developer writes, "a couple of in game mechanics need refining and plenty bugs to iron out but is essentially fully functioning and playable." (dr)

Mastodon client: Amidon 1.0
Dimitris 'MiDWaN' Panokostas, author of the Amiga emulator Amiberry, has released version 1.0 of his Mastodon client Amidon for AmigaOS 3 (amiga-news.de reported. Requirements:
- AmigaOS 3.x
- AmiSSL 4
- MUI 3.9 or newer
- The following MUI classes:
- Hyperlink.mcc (available in the MUI 4.x and 5.x archives)
- TextEditor.mcc
- BetterString.mcc (required by TextEditor)
- HTMLview.mcc
- codesets.library
- 68020+ CPU
- 8MB RAM
- An internet connection and a TCP/IP stack running (cURL will check for bsdsocket.library on startup). AmiTCP 4, Roadshow or emulators with the bsdsocket.library option enabled will work.
- A web browser will be needed once, for the first time you authenticate your account.
As the developer tells us, the release also serves to be able to find and fix any previously undiscovered problems. He is already working on an update that will add some additional features based on the feedback.
The basic functions are available, but some things are not possible due to the current limitations of MUI in combination with Hollywood. For example, notifications are only displayed as plain text, not HTML. MUI Listviews could not contain complex objects, so some compromises had to be made.
The start-up time on a real Amiga could be improved: it is currently quite slow on a 68060 Amiga at 13 seconds. This and many other problems could be solved if he rewrote the programme in C/C++. But that is something for the future, depending on motivation and time.
Basically, he recommends using MUI 3.9, because HTMLview, the MUI class used to display HTML content in Amidon, has problems with some versions of MUI under AmigaOS 3.x. It does not display content with MUI 4 or 5, so at the moment the client only works properly with MUI 3.9. Basically HTMLview seems to have problems with the display of content behind HTTPS links (e.g. images). MUI 3.8 can also be used, but it has some problems with the display of content in the list views, which is why it is not recommended. (dr)

Hyperion/Cloanto litigation: judgment in the main lawsuit issued
Cloanto had sued Hyperion in
2017, initially to have a judge declare that the Italian company is the
rightful owner of the "Amiga" mark and that Hyperion neither has the right to
fight this trademark registration nor register similar marks like "AmigaOS"
or "AmigaOne" itself. The lawsuit was later merged with another one inititated by Hyperion, which
also added Amino, Itec and Amiga Inc. as additional parties to the litigation
and expanded the scope of the laswuit to cover issues of breach of contract,
trademark violations and alleged IP theft.
Mike Battilana of Cloanto had attempted to also have his 'C-A Acquisition
Corporation', the entity that acquired the Amiga copyrights
from Amiga Inc. in early 2019, added as another plaintiff to the above
lawsuit. The judge denied this
request, since the motion was filed way too late. A few days later, the
C-A Acquisition Corporation filed its own
lawsuit against Hyperion, but this case is currently frozen until the
main lawsuit has been resolved. Already in 2019, the judge declared that Cloanto lacked
standing to sue Hyperion for breach of the 2009 settlement agreement.
Last tuesday, judge Martinez issued a judgment in the
main litigation between Amino, Itec, Amiga Inc. and Cloanto on one side and
Hyperion on the other. Basically, he declared that none of the four
plaintiffs has any standing to sue Hyperion for any of the alleged violations
raised by them:
- In addition to Cloanto (see above), Amino, Itec and Amiga Inc. can't sue
for breach of contract, since they transferred "all rights [...] including
the right to sue [...] for past infringements" to the C-A Acquisition
Corporation.
- Cloanto's accusation that Hyperion changed copyright notices in their
AmigaOS releases to assign ownership to itself, might be a violation of
copyright - but thanks to a "Non-Aggression Clause" in the 2009
settlement agreement, only the C-A Acquisition Corpoation could hold Hyperion
responsible for that.
- The various alleged violations of trademark rights are considered moot,
partially because Hyperion withdrew its objections to the other parties'
marks and abandoned its own attempts to register trademarks in the US and
partially because the only party that could prosecute trademark violations is
C-A Acquisition Corporation.
If none of the parties object to this ruling, the case would end without
resolving any of the issues between Cloanto/C-A Acquisition and Hyperion.
Judge Martinez simply declared that only C-A Acquisition Corporation - renamed to Amiga Corporation in
the meantime - is entitled to sue Hyperion for breach of contract or violating
trademark rights or Amiga related copyright. Such a case already exists, but
has been stayed until the main litigation discussed here is resolved.
Approached by amiga-news.de, Mike Battilana didn't want to issue a statement
"yet". Hyperion posted a press release
on its website, referring to this judgment as a "sweeping victory".

Portable assembler: vasm V1.9c
Frank Wille has updated his portable and retargetable assembler vasm to version 1.9c. AmigaOS 3, 4 and MorphOS as well as TOS, MiNT and Windows are supported. Changes of version 1.9b and 1.9c:
- Fixed a rare expression evalulation bug. Previous versions may erroneously evaluate "label - equate" as constant, when the equate is something like "currentPCsymbol - label".
- Allow a label definition on the same line as a section directive and warn about it.
- Macro arguments were lost at the second repeat-level inside a macro.
- Syntax modules warn about garbage characters in the operand field, when the mnemonic doesn't take any operand.
- No longer cut symbol names in a wide-format listing file after 31 chars.
- Error messages on macros and repetitions now always include the real source file name and line number in parentheses.
- Directives for printing expressions into the console (printv, echo, etc.) now print undefined symbols as "<undefined>+offset".
- New output module "gst" for GST object files (Atari, GST-assembler, Devpac).
- New output file format "dri" for Atari M68k DRI object files.
- m68k: Experimental Apollo TEX instruction, using a simplified syntax after a proposal of John H.
- m68k: Apollo extended/compressed Bcc.B displacements in the range of -256 to 254.
- m68k: MOVEQ.L suppresses any warning about an out of range operand.
- m68k: Allow any size-extension for MOVEQ in Devpac-compatibility mode.
- m68k: Fixed a string-buffer conflict introduced in V1.9a, which occurs when using local symbols in the label field and operand field together with some cpu-specific directives, like EQUR, REG, etc.
- m68k: Optimize small data label in 020 base displacement to a 16-bit offset, or even to (d16,An) when the index is suppressed, provided that options -sd and -extsd have been given.
- 6502: Some mnemonics could be misdetected as implied addressing mode when option -i was given: asl, asr, lsr, rol, ror. 45GS02: aslq, asrq, deq, inq, lsrq, rolq, rorq. WDC02: dec, inc.
- mot-syntax: Do not allow a section with the same name and same type, but with different memory attributes.
- mot-syntax: New option -nolocpfx to disable local symbols by label- prefix (usually '.').
- mot-syntax: ELIF directive implements a real else-if.
- mot-syntax: Export equate symbols with double-colon in vasm-native mode.
- std-syntax: Fixed an issue caused by the introduction of one-digit temporary labels in V1.9a. Labels beginning with _f or _b were misdetected as forward/backward references to such labels.
- std-syntax: Added missing .elseif directive.
- oldstyle-syntax: All byte-directives (byt, byte, dfb, etc.) increment the pc by one without any operand. All word-directives (wor, wrd, word, etc.) increment the pc by two without any operand. Similar to a "declare storage" directive.
- oldstyle-syntax: Whitespace between a label and its colon are allowed again.
- hunk-output: Warn about inability of Kickstart 1.x to initialize BSS sections greater than 256k.
- bin-output: ORIC file names in the tape header are limited to 15 characters and a ".tap" extension is removed automatically.
- bin-output: Added support for the PGX and PGZ format, used by 65816- based C256 Foenix computers.
- tos-output: Support DRI-format object files. New option: -Fdri.

ReAction GUI for XAD: Avalanche 2.1 for AmigaOS 3 and 4
Chris Young's Avalanche is a ReAction-based graphical user interface for the unarchiving system XAD, which also supports the xfdmaster.library and can search for viruses using the xvs.library. With the jump to version 2.1, the developer not only gives the tool a new look, but also introduces simple editing of LhA/Zip archives (Zip requires zip.library - only under AmigaOS 4). The developer has written his tool explicitly for AmigaOS 3.2.1, but has also tested it under AmigaOS 4. Changes:
- New browser mode, removed old hierarchical browser.
- Select/Clear/Invert selection now act on the current directory and all subdirectories when in the new browser mode.
- Basic editing of (LhA, Zip) archives (Zip needs zip.library - OS4 only)
- Create new (LhA, Zip) archives
The source code is available on GitHub. (dr)

AmigaOS 4: NVMe device driver for SSD
Besides his audio driver for Intel HD Audio (amiga-news.de reported), Harald Kanning has now started developing a NVMe device driver for SSDs and has released the first version 53.1 under the title link.
As the author explained, "is short for 'Non-Volatile Memory express'. It's basically a transfer protocol for attachment of mass storage to a computer.
Unlike SATA, NVMe is specifically designed for solid state flash memory. There is no separate storage controller. Instead, the NVMe SSD is directly connected to the PCIe bus through an M.2 slot.
None of the current NG systems offer a M.2 slot directly on the mainboard. But since an NVMe M.2 slot is basically a PCIe x4 slot with a different form-factor, we can use a widely available passive PCIeM.2 adapter card.
These adapter cards are available with a PCIe x1 or PCIe x4 connector. Don't use the adapter cards with multiple M.2 slots because they will not work.
The driver was tested on an AmigaOne X5000 and in the x4 slot with the following drives:
- Samsung 970 EVO 1TB
- WD Black SN770 1TB
For this, the developer has provided a few first benchmarks:
p50x0SATA.device: Samsung 840 SSD 120GB
- Copy 1GB file from RAM: to NGFS/01: 51.5MB/s (20.4 sec)
- Copy 1GB file from NGFS/01 to RAM : 98.9MB/s (10.6 sec)
nvme.device: Samsung 970 EVO SSD 1TB
- Copy 1GB file from RAM: to NGFS/01: 129.5MB/s (8.1 sec)
- Copy 1GB file from NGFS/01 to RAM : 152.0MB/s (6.9 sec)
- Copy 1GB file from RAM: to SFS/02 : 327.7MB/s (3.2 sec)
- Copy 1GB file from SFS/02 to RAM : 233.0MB/s (4.5 sec)

Tutorial: Installation guide for AmigaOS 4.1 under QEMU 8
QEMU is an open-source computer emulator and virtualiser. This means you can functionally simulate computers or provide virtual systems that replicate the functionality of a real system. QEMU is able to emulate a complete computer in software without the need to support hardware virtualisation. So it is also possible to emulate Amiga operating systems like AROS, AmigaOS or MorphOS on QEMU. This is provided by the developer Zoltan Balaton who shares many information and tips on his webeite. In the middle of 2021, Amiga-News.de had a closer look at the installation of MorphOS under QEMU 6.
Recently the first release candidate of QEMU 8 was published. What has changed importantly from the Amiga point of view?
- via-ac97: Basic implementation of audio playback via VIA southbridge chip (for the first time it is possible to use the sound support of the via-ac97 directly under the Pegasos-2 emulation)
- sm501: Implemented more 2D raster operations (added simple implementation for two raster operations used by AmigaOS 4.1 to fix graphics problems in some programs like IBrowse).
- Fix PCI interrupt routing: Fix PCI interrupts within the Pegasos 2 emulation under Linux, MorphOS and AmigaOS. This now makes it possible for the first time to activate and use network support via the RTL8139 driver under AmigaOS 4.1
Our reader Rene Engel, in collaboration with Zoltan Balaton, has produced an installation guide for AmigaOS 4.1 under QEMU 8, which he has kindly made available for publication and which will be refined and adapted over time:
1. Preparations
1.1 What is required?
The CD must be available as ISO file, which can easily be done under Windows, for example, with the free tool ImgBurn.
AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition Update 2 and AmigaOS 4.1 Update 3 are also required, which can be downloaded free of charge from the Hyperion Entertainment website after registering and entering the CD key supplied. Since owners of the AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition do not have access to the AmigaOS 4.1 Update 3 anymore, you would have to find another way to get the required files. Alternatively, you could also buy the AmigaOS 4.1 Sam460 version: this also contains the files.
- QEMU 8: currently no finished builds are available there (you have to compile them yourself).
Under macOS, the package manager Homebrew and Xcode should be installed beforehand, as described in this article. You can then install QEMU via the terminal as follows:
brew install Qemu
Until finished builds for macOS with Apple chips are available, it is necessary to compile the source code yourself. With the release of the final version of QEMU 8, Homebrew will also have adapted its packages to the new version 8.0. Currently, all versions up to and including Qemu 7.2 can be downloaded and installed there.
- Flash Update für Pegasos 2
Download the file "up050404" either from the bplan homepage (only working under macOS with "Save as...") or via Wayback Machine. The file "extract_rom_from_updater" (direct download) is available on the Qmiga project page and is needed to extract a Pegasos2.rom from it. There is also a description of how to use the "updater".
- an unarchiving tool that can unpack LHA-packed files, such as 7-zip. There are similar tools for Linux and macOS that can do this.
- the freeware tool UltraISO (Windows), a tool that can open and edit ISO files. There are also similar tools for Linux and macOS that can do this.
1.2. Creating a QEMU hard disk image
Via Console/Shell/Terminal under Windows/Linux/Mac:
Qemu-img create –f raw hd.img 2G
2G here stands for 2 gigabyte hard disk size and can be individually adjusted depending on how large the virtual hard disk is to become. For the beginning, I recommend not going higher than 2GB. Important: to create the hd.img, you must be in the QEMU directory.
1.3 Adaptation of the installation medium
Before we can boot with the Pegasos 2 emulation under QEMU, the installation medium must be adapted. First you should unpack the archives "AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition Update 2" and "AmigaOS 4.1 Update 3" and search in the unpacked folder for the file "PCIGraphics.card" in the folder Content/Kickstart or for the file "siliconmotion502.chip" in the folder Files_Sam460ex/Kickstart.
Now copy the files "siliconmotion502.chip" and "PCIGraphics.card" to your AmigaOS 4.1 FE Pegasos2InstallCD.ISO with the help of UltraIso into the directory /System/Kickstart. Then you only have to open the file "Kicklayout" in the Kickstart and /System/Kickstart folders with a text editor and add the following line without "":
- for the Kicklayout in Kickstart directory: "MODULE System/Kickstart/siliconmotion502.chip"
- for thw Kicklayout in System/Kickstart directory: "MODULE Kickstart/siliconmotion502.chip"
Save the changes under UltraIso. The bootloader should not be affected by the changes and the Pegasos2InstallCD.ISO should still be bootable.
2. Booting QEMU
This is a pure basic command line to be able to boot from the Pegasos2InstallCD.ISO under QEMU. The paths to pegasos2.rom, hd.img and also to Pegasos2InstallCD.iso must be adjusted accordingly. Make sure you are in the QEMU directory and type in the following command line:
qemu-system-ppc -L pc-bios -M pegasos2 /
-bios /pfad/zum/pegasos2.rom / -vga none / -device sm501 /
-drive if=none,id=cd,file=/pfad/zum/Pegasos2InstallCD-53.54.iso,format=raw /
-device ide-cd,drive=cd,bus=ide.1 /
-drive if=none,id=hd,file=/pfad/zu/eure/hd.img,format=raw /
-device ide-hd,drive=hd,bus=ide.0 /
-device rtl8139,netdev=net0 /
-netdev user,id=net0 /
-rtc base=localtime / -serial stdio
Under MacOs, the line -display cocoa or -display sdl must also be entered, otherwise no window will open. If everything has worked, QEMU welcomes you with the Pegasos2 SmartFirmware.
Now simply enter the following command:
boot cd amigaboot.of
The SmartFirmware should now boot AmigaOS 4.1. The installation of AmigaOS 4.1 will then proceed as usual: partition the hard disk, install the boot loader, etc.
Important: AmigaOS 4.1 FE can currently only be installed and booted on FFS-formatted virtual hard disks. Partitions with the file system SFS will not be registered under AmigaOS 4.1 for Pegasos 2 (the problem is already being investigated). An illustrated pdf instruction can be found on the pages of Amedia Computer France.
After the installation on your virtual hard disk and after ejecting the installation CD (ISO), the command
boot hd:0 amigaboot.of
under the SmartFirmware to boot from your virtual hard disk:
For some reason, which is not yet known, the first boot process after installation starts in Pal-LowRes mode and there is incorrect screen display. However, the problem can be easily solved by simply calling System/Prefs/Screenmode and selecting a 16-bit screen there.
3. Conclusion
I am unbelievably positively surprised at how fast the whole thing runs and also 2D accelerated. I didn't know anything like that from other emulators before. Not everything runs perfectly yet, but at least the everyday things can already be used under AmigaOS 4.1. On 16 bit, the screen resolution is limited to 1440x900 and there is no 3D acceleration. In this YouTube video I show the general usability of the Workbench under the Pegasos 2 emulation: playing mp3 files, multitasking, loading times and displaying folders with many files, etc.
The biggest thanks go to BALATON Zoltan who programmed the whole thing for us and in his spare time. Without him it would never have been possible! I hope you have fun testing! If you get stuck at any point, please write a comment and ask your questions.
This was tested extensively under macOS 13.2.1 with Apple M1 Max. However, it should be just as possible under Linux and Windows, albeit in a slightly modified form. (dr)

Website application: The virtual Hippoplayer
It all started at the end of 2009, when Spot created aSCIIaRENa as a website for the ASCII scene, which underwent a complete relaunch in 2021 with the help of 'Burps', 'Nicomen', 'Phantasm' and 'Ziphoid'.
Later came other ideas, they wanted to clone the number one ASCII tool, CygnusED, as CED for the web as a way to co-op on ASCII collys similar to how google docs works, but in a CED environment, Fred and Phiwer was brought into the team to write CED. It is available in alpha state now.
When making ASCII you need to listen to Amiga music of course, a prototype clone of Hippoplayer (HiP) was written by Stalvik, but it got scrapped early on.
In a next step of this exciting journey of the project, TAWS developer Michael Rupp was asked to use his Amiga Workbench simulation for browsers for the project. At that time HippoPlayer used the Bassoon tracker's playback routine as backend, work-in-progress was the conversion to a better backend by Jürgen Wothke based on UADE, which supports a variety of Amiga formats (some of them very exotic) due to the Paula emulation included in it. The graphical user interface was already very close to the original HiP 68k, the behavior of the windows was still quite rudimentary compared to TAWS.
It soon became apparent that it was more expedient to not only use Michael Rupp's assistance, but to completely hand over the implementation in TAWS to him, since the GUI was completely rewritten based on his TAWS classes.
Parallel to this it happened that K-P Koljonen had resumed the further development of HippoPlayer for Amiga in 2021 (amiga-news.de reported) and it was agreed that their webclone should become official with K-P Koljonen’s blessing.
In close cooperation between the author of the mod player and Michael Rupp, the original GUI was studied and rebuilt down to the smallest detail for the web implementation. Care was taken to ensure that the two HippoPlayers are compatible, i.e. that playlists can be exchanged. No matter which version created the playlist, the other one can read it.
Thanks to the UHC tools by Patrik Axelsson and David Eriksson, HiP can now access Internet sources directly. The UHC server and its search API is also used for searching in HiP-TAWS. This makes compatible playlists possible, because if local files on the Amiga hard disk were referenced, this would not be possible otherwise.
In this context, one of the new features is the published playlists, which can be found in the "Playlists" folder. Through the Amiga remix search it should then also be possible to play MP3s, but the existing backend was only for the various tracker formats, but not for normal audio files like MP3, WAV, etc.. So Michael Rupp developed this himself. Now it is possible to play all formats including all audio files via this one player class. When HiP finally supported internet radio streaming, a streaming backend was added.
The scopes (graphical representation of what was heard) were also quite elaborate. In addition to the original HippoScope, RuppScope was created as a separate scope option by reverse-engineering.
The site was first published at workbench.asciiarena.se/, and the other existing projects were integrated as iFrame applications by the "aSCIIaRENa" people: AmIRC, NComm and the demos under Work:Demos. AmIRC and NComm is in early alpha stage and their names will probably be changed later on.
The IBrowse implementation was done by Michael Rupp himself and is intended as a homage to the Amiga browser, which its author, Oliver Roberts, took good note of when we pointed it out. In contrast to the original, the online version of course only handles a fraction.
aSCIIaRENA can still be reached through https://www.asciiarena.se if you prefer that instead of viewing it in the iBrowse clone at https://www.hippoplayer.se.
When HippoPlayer became more and more central, the alias address hippoplayer.se/ was added. The UADE backend alone already supports about 300 formats, as Wothke had developed (and continues to develop) more backends, and made them available as open source. So more were integrated, whereby currently about 500 formats are supported. More will follow. (dr)

Managing ADF files: Rust library "adflib"
Volker Schwaberow is in the process of converting ADFlib, written by Laurent Clevy mainly in C, into the programming language Rust. As he explained to us when asked, the library is still in a very early stage and still very minimalistic. At the moment it can read and write ADF, it can read and write tracks and sectors in a byte array. There is no support yet for file systems, compression, etc.
However, that is the goal. In addition, there will be a command line tool that will allow these operations to be performed on the command line without the need for programming knowledge. The author is happy about support, code commits from third parties are welcome. (dr)

Remake: Rick Dangerous released
"Z-Team" has released its remake of the game Rick Dangeous with enhanced graphics for the Amiga 1200 or CD32 (and Windows, Mac and THEA500 Mini) (YouTube video of beta version 0.4). The game was written with the Scorpion Engine, but in contrast to the original plan there is no graphics card version, because the responsible programmer had left the team during development. (dr)

AMOS Layers System 1.100 & 2.4
Simone 'saimo' Bevilacqua's "AMOS Layers System" (amiga-news.de reported) makes it possible to overlay several of its screens when programming under AMOS, specifying the order, colors and opaqueness.
Since our last report, minor optimizations have been made, resulting in more compact, faster program code and ending the dependency on the mathtrans.library. This did benefit the author's recent game updates. (snx)

Interview: Ravi Abbott (Kickstart - UK Amiga Expo, The Retro Hour)
Ravi Abbott is known for his various documentaries and videos such as "Downfall Amiga, after Commodore" or Amiga Computer Buyers Guide 2022, runs the podcast The Retro Hour together with Dan Wood, writes for the Amiga Addict, is a DJ and has as his latest project to bring back a combination of user meeting and fair for Amiga fans to the UK after several years with "Kickstart" (amiga-news.de reported). We asked Ravi Abbott about his motives and motivation for all these projects:
Amiga-News (AN): Ravi, thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us. I assume the preparations for the Kickstart are keeping you busy. How did you come up with the idea for this event?
Ravi Abbott (RA): Years ago, the UK used to host large events such as World of Amiga, which I attended as a young person and miss the atmosphere it provided. Unfortunately, there hasn't been a consistent event in the UK for all Amiga users to come together for many years.
Having attended international events, I've always wondered why this is the case. In the past, there have been some fantastic events such as VCF 2020 at Bletchley Park, Amiga 30 in Peterborough, and the impressive big user group meeting Workbench.
A national event was planned before COVID-19 hit, but unfortunately, it was cancelled. As someone with experience in the events industry, I decided to take on the challenge of creating a self-sufficient and consistent annual event model in the middle of England.
AN: What was your motivation and what makes it different from others like AmiWest (USA) or Amiga 37 (Germany)?
RA: Since the Amiga is currently experiencing a surge in popularity, I was motivated to seize this opportunity and grow the event as much as possible. Events like Amiga37 and Amiga Ireland have been a tremendous source of inspiration, with their impressive turnouts, energetic vibes, and well-organized music performances influencing our event. Markus has done an excellent job, and we ensured that we selected a date that wouldn't conflict with these incredible events. We would like to emulate the success of Amiwest, which has consistently run for years.
Although we don't have exact numbers, committing to vast spaces is challenging especially in this tough financial time. However, I believe we've struck the perfect balance between the number of attendees, a fantastic venue (the oldest professional football club in the world), and interest, which allows us to build on this foundation every year and improve the event each time. Our focus on creativity and the future is central to our vision, and we're eager to celebrate the great history of Amiga developers, musicians, and artists in the UK with visitors from around the globe.
AN: Well, our readers do know you by the podcast "The Retro Hour" and many interesting videos. So, please tell me, what is your motivation to do this? What drives you? What do you want to achieve?
RA: I have always enjoyed exploring technology and the stories about how it developed and people's unique paths to entering the industry. Computer technology has grown so quickly that often great stories and achievements are missed, lost, or untold. Mainstream media has always been dismissive of gamers, and retro technology often discusses gaming without intelligence or thought, even though it has helped develop so much of our current lives. We wanted to start a podcast where developers and creatives could talk directly to the audience with honesty and respect. One day, I hope the podcast and videos can help people studying video games in the future or simply be interested in the subject. It's so important to get these stories told because throughout the time we have recorded the podcast, sadly, some of our guests have passed away.
AN: And is it "just a hobby" or is it a full time job?
RA: I first started doing a podcast as a hobby. Doing it weekly for 7 years has pretty much turned it into a part-time job and takes up a lot of my time, but we all really enjoy it, and that's why it has lasted so long. Another addition to the podcast is hosting panels at gaming shows and events, which I really enjoy. Covid was a big reset time for everybody and personally helped me take more risks. We set up Amiga Addict Magazine at the start of Covid, and that's also now turned into a part-time job as well!
I don't think I could ever be a full-time YouTuber due to hating video editing, and my release schedule being very inconsistent. I enjoy doing YouTube videos, but I never really focus on massively growing my channel. I just hope people enjoy the videos I do make.
I am currently organizing a huge UK Amiga Expo for 600 people. I have a background in the events industry in the UK and really enjoy going around the world to Amiga events. Currently, they seem to be very popular worldwide, but the UK is missing out, so I hope this event can become a regular thing and a home for the UK Amiga community to get together.
AN: As we can read in your YouTube description, Commodore Amiga is your main passion and you love it since you were a kid. When was the idea born to use the Amiga not only to play games, but to conduct interviews and make videos?
RA: The Amiga was such a groundbreaking machine; it fueled creativity. Not only could you play games, but you could also make them! These days, we see packages by companies like Adobe on modern machines. Many students are taught the same software on the same machines, and it feels more restricted and compliant to me. The Amiga broke the boundaries of what you could do with a machine. If you could dream it, you could make it. This is what I really love about the machine. I would love to see these ideas applied to modern computing in some way and people breaking free of the mold.
AN: Of course, we need to know: which was your first Amiga model and are you still owning an Amiga?
RA: I used to own an A2000, which was my first Amiga, but unfortunately, I no longer have it. Currently, I have two A600s which I use for DJing, a CD32 with a Terrible First TF360 prototype, an A4000 with a ZZ9000 card and toaster stickers, and a unique Amiga A600 laptop that I have been constructing to function on lithium batteries and enclosed in a Lego case.
AN: Have you tried your hand at programming? If so, what caused this career to fail? ;)
RA: I have tried programming but really found the emerging web much more interesting. As part of my career I have been working as a web developer coding in HTML, JAVAScript, PHP and other languages. Coding is always fun and I enjoy the creativity but it also requires a lot of focus and learning the new standards which can hold you back if you’re not faster than the competition adapting to the latest Trend.
AN: What do you think is the fascination with retro computers in general and the Amiga in particular? Nowadays, we're always looking for the newest and fastest, aren't we?
RA: The limitations of computing have always fascinated me. The ability to create something amazing with just a small piece of code or a small processor is like magic. The demoscene is a standout in digital culture and has led to so many developments. The best thing about retro computing is that it saves machines that would otherwise be dismissed. When I use a new machine, I feel guilty if I'm just using it to browse the web, knowing there is so much power on the system that's unused. The Amiga is great for hacking, upgrading, and learning. The foundations of my computer knowledge come from Workbench and learning to code from the back of magazines, something you don't tend to see anymore in the culture of using plugins or engines. Getting down to the metal has a strong appeal.
AN: Making a video is one thing. But how do you prepare? How do you choose a topic and how do you go about it? Do you first research all the necessary information, then create a "shooting plan" and then write your script? You are using much video material: how do you find it? And how easy is it to get permissions to use it?
RA: I usually look at YouTube and see if there is a gap in knowledge or a subject that people have not covered before. Then, I research the subject by looking at magazines from the time, chatting with friends about it, and ensuring that I have consistent research and references. Once that is done, I record a voice-over and write a script. The main issue is using footage. I try to contact the owner of the footage, but I also make sure that the clip is short and fits YouTube policies. It’s amazing how much incredible footage is out there if you look at old show videos on sites like archive.org or the waybackmachine.
AN: What is the advantage and possibly also the disadvantage of a video compared to an essay/book? For the future, can you imagine writing a book?
RA: Video editing can be a slog. Editing a video takes a long time, and there are so many aspects to consider, such as getting the sound right, acquiring permissions, and meeting YouTube's guidelines. Additionally, ensuring that the video is neither too long nor too short can be challenging. While video editing is not my preferred form of content creation, I enjoy writing. For the past two years, I have served as the Community Editor for Amiga Addict magazine. Recently, I launched a Kickstarter campaign for a book based on 'The Retro Hour Podcast.' This journey has been interesting and has allowed me to improve my writing skills, as well as learn about the publishing, editing, and printing processes.
AN: What would you like to see in the future of the Amiga? Do you think it makes sense to invest time and money in the development of new hardware and software or should we rather enjoy what we have and use and expand it?
RA: The Amiga scene is growing rapidly around the world, with more hardware and software being developed than in years past. This is a fantastic development, and I hope it continues. For many, the Amiga represents an escape to simpler times, and I worry that in the future, people may not understand or appreciate that. However, the key aspect that people will always appreciate is the ability to do amazing things with limited machines, and not dismiss them as obscure or irrelevant. The demoscene will always push the boundaries of the Amiga, but emerging scenes such as music and art also offer creative opportunities that I hope will continue for generations to come.
AN: Ravi, thank you very much for the interview and good luck for the Kickstart!
The Kickstart will take place on 1 and 2 July 2023 in Nottingham (UK) at Meadow Lane football ground, home of the oldest professional football club in the world. Guests include Mike Dailly of DMA Design ("Lemmings") and Simon Phipps of Core Design, creator of Rick Dangerous. The aftershow party will feature live music from DJ Formula, DJ H0ffman, HarleyLikesMusic and Vogue Renege. The event has room for 600 Amiga fans, tickets can be purchased now. (dr)
