New tool to create VideoCDs
Because of my suggestion here in the forum several programmers have ported a GNU project named VCDImager to the Amiga. This program can create a VideoCD image file in the bin/cue format from a MPEG system file.

Supported are VCD1.1, VCD2.0, SuperVCD and even CDI. This image file can subsequently be burned with BurnIT or MakeCD from version 3.2d6+, provided you're owning a DAO capable version. The program exists in two different versions (68k and WarpOS). For the time being it is on the Aminet among the new uploads and can later be found in gfx/conv.

Game development: in-game graphics for Schlachtfeld
Finally there are first graphics shown that will be used for the units on the playfield of the future version of Schlachtfeld. The units "Chap", "David" and "Zyklop" can be found among these.

First we restrict ourselves to a simple topdown view as the representation of the objects is done much easier this way. Later versions will make use of 3d views.

Please enter your criticism in the forum under "Einheitendesign" - so we know what we should improve. Thank you! (ps) (Translation: wk)

Eternity: PC with preinstalled UAE with JIT
For some time, Eternity has offered the EternityOne, which is a PC with AMD Athlon processor which has the Amiga emulator UAE preinstalled.

From now on, the PC is shipped with only 1.2 GHz and a DVD-ROM. Further, WinUAE with JIT is installed automatically which results in two to four times faster speed than an Amiga with 060 processor. With the DVD-ROM and the very fast processor, you can for example watch DVD movies fullscreen on this computer. (ps) (Translation: rh)

Merlancia Open letter to the Amiga Community by Ryan E. A. Czerwinski, CEO of Merlancia Industries

Greetings to all. We are happy that the Amiga community is taking a deep and serious interest in our products and what we are working on in the background! We will be releasing some more critical information to answer your questions soon, however, we are currently gagged until some other contracts are completed.

I assure you all that welcomed good news is ahead...in fact, look forward to a feature article about us in an upcoming issue of Amiga Active Magazine, where we hope to answer many of your questions. We are currently looking for those that are interested in developing for our system(s). (As the Tsunami will only be the *first* system we are releasing.)

To answer some common questions that have been asked:

Re bPlan:
Yes, we are working with bPlan on the Tsunami design. The details of this partnership are due out soon. Let it be said that we are designing hardware, not just sitting idle and waiting for others to do our work for us. We have very talented people on staff, both software and hardware (not to mention press relations and marketing) and we are spending our $$$ wisely.

Release dates:
The Tsunami system is expected to be released in it's final consumer form in November to December 2001. We are working very hard to meet this deadline, though we cannot foresee any problems that may arise. The Pilot release will most likely be after the AmiWest conference, not at as we had hoped, as we are currently having a slight fault in the gfx display; We will have a demonstration system at the show. We plan to have a press conference as well as other 'events' at AmiWest, and we hope that there is a large amount of Amigans that think it wise to attend. ;)

We need your talents!:
We are looking for both software and hardware developers. A platform like this cannot succeed without a full range of software to run on it. Sure, the current software will run on our system, but we need a full library of up-to-date software, both multimedia and business applications, to be able to achieve our place in the market.

We have already received orders for developer systems from some very impressive firms and individuals. We hope to grab up as much talent as possible, as it makes sense to have PowerPC software for new PowerPC hardware. We are looking for both the absurdly simple (tiny games or utilities) to the fairly complex (graphics packages, office suites) software titles. An option will be available to have your software included with each unit sold, or special unit packages.

AmigaOS 4/5:
We are unfortunately unable to release details on this currently, however, we hope to do so shortly; most likely at the AmiWest conference.

Let it be said currently that our system both meets and exceeds the Zico specification, as do all of our 'in development' systems.

Our market:
We are designing our Torro systems to be a natural complete system solution upgrade path for current Amiga users (see examples of how/why below) but we are not limiting our products to the current Amiga market or community. We anticipate high sales volumes to the consumer and industrial multimedia markets; Our systems are designed to be as CHRP resembling as possible. We are pitting them against the big names like Apple and SGI.

Our partnership with Blittersoft was only the first step in this process - Working together on the iFusion project will allow us to migrate iFusion to our systems easily, allowing full Macintosh compatibility on our products, both under AmigaOS and stand-alone (later). We are also planning on offering other OS solutions as separate packages including QNX, Linux, Solaris, BeOS (hopefully), and others. We cannot provide MacOS ourselves, but the user will have the option of installing it, and we will also be working on an x86 emulator so that if the user desires he/she can use x86 operating systems including UNiX, Linux-x86, BeOs-x86, and (gasp!) even MS Windows (though we won't support it directly).

We are also working on a firmware OS (think what Exec is to Amiga) that allows not only selection of startup devices via an 'early startup' screen, but also setting up multiple machine states that can be launched with ease and switched between instantly. (Thus allowing multiple OSs to be run at once.) This may not be included with the first launch, but an updater will be available to patch the firmware, which is flash updateable. Speaking of which, your machine state setting will be able to be saved, as well as your other setting, including screen mode and startup volume (individual to each machine state), thus allowing you to start up with those options each time you reboot.

Why is it a natural upgrade path?:
Unlike other machines promised in the past, and other projects in the works, we are working on something that will be completely natural to the Amiga user of today. Features like the ability to read and write to floppy discs and other media in native Amiga formats (880k and 1760k on floppy discs) as well as simple things like the layout of the keyboard and the look and feel of the design of the system all around all total up to Amiga-like. We are trying to make a product that is impressive from the inside and out, not just another ëboxí. Not to say that all offerings that are currently being made are bad. in fact, I look forward to the EyeTech AmigaOne. I know I will buy one personally, and our retail division will carry them. (We have the worldís largest stock of A1200 NTSC systems; other dealers are now ordering them from us.)

The future and beyond:
What lies in store for us, the Amiga community? I canít say for sure, but I feel that the future is brighter than ever; due both to the commitment from Amiga ( a lively bunch of bright and intelligent individuals) as well as out commitment to you, the Amiga community. As always, you come first in our thinking and our product design. This product is designed for you; We wouldnít have bothered if it wasnít.

As always, best wishes to everyone. Thank you for being a customer, current, or future.

Cheers,
Ryan E. A. Czerwinski

Merlancia Industries' Announces Startegic Alliance with 'individual Computers

Merlancia Industries is pleased to announce a strategic relationship with 'individual Computers'; to design a controller device that will be utilised on our Torro series systems.

The device, a custom chip controller, named 'CLeo' will be available as an add-on kit for the Pilot release systems (to be included with all systems shipping after it's release, and to be sent to all developer systems sold before-hand).

The 'CLeo' custom device is based on technology first implemented in individual Computers' 'CatWeasel' disc controller, and will allow the reading and writing of Amiga native disc formats (880k and 1760k) on our Tsunami system as well as future directives. Other formats will be supported as well including PC-DOS, and Macintosh-HFS.

We expect to have a prototype of this design at AmiWest Conference (28th to 29th July 2001- Sacramento, CA; USA) as well as our prototype Pilot system.

Webserver: Apache V1.3.20 + PHP V4.0.6
As already reported an update of the Amiga webserver 'Apache' was released on the ´SixK Port Page´. This Apache version still is 1.3.20. The script language module 'PHP' is available in version 4.0.6 as released on 23. June 2001. Now the entire debug code was removed and a test.php added for testing purposes.

New timeline for AmigaOne
Under the title link you can find the new timeline for the AmigaOne. According to it the selling start is at the beginning of October.

Probably at the "secret" meeting at the Benelux Amiga Show they reached an agreement on it explained Alan Redhouse (Eyetech) at the AmigaOne mailinglist.

With this delay AmigaOS 4.0 becomes more important. Still in this version there will be the PPC native TCP/IP stack which according to Fleecy Moss (Amiga) was developed by Olaf "Olsen" Barthel and which is being tested with a 68k version.

There will be the new filesystem "AmFS2" and the support of virtuel memory already in 4.0 as well as drivers for SCSI and Ethernet.

Besides this Picasso96 and Warp3D drivers will be delivered for Voodoo3 (PCI/AGP), Matrox G450 (PCI/AGP) and Matrox G550 (AGP).

Contrary to the original plans USB- and soundcard-support (with "Soundblaster Live") will be there already in the BoingBags of OS 4.0 and not on OS 4.2. (ps)

Elbox: Answers to questions of users
Elbox has issued a statement which answers many questions of the users concerning SharkPPC, sound- and tv-card-drivers as well as Warp3D support.

Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 22:22:13 +0200
From: ELBOX support@elbox.com

X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.7 [pl] (WinNT; I)
Subject: ELBOX about SharkPPC, Sound and TV card drivers and Warp3D support

Below are the answers from Elbox to questions asked by Kay Are Ulvestad.
The questions (asked in a message to Elbox) refer to SharkPPC cards,
drivers to Mediator PCI for Sound, TV and other cards, Warp 3D support, etc.

As we have explained many times, we will start producing
SharkPPC G3/G4 and ShakPPC+ cards when AmigaOS 4.0 is ready
for releasing.

> 2. When is the next driver release from you? What kind of drivers
> can be expected, and how soon?

Tomorrow we will make available the MediatorUP2.3 update, which
is a simultaneous update for the users of Mediator PCI 1200 and
Mediator PCI ZIV. All the system files and the enclosed drivers
have been optimized and adjusted to operation with Mediator PCI 1200
and ZIV. In the pci.library, workaround has been made to avoid the
incorrect recognition of 68LC060 processors by the LC060.library.

The next drivers to be made available within the coming two weeks
will be drivers for SoundBlaster 128 music cards.

Drivers to TV cards, which were presented in WOA 2000 in Koln
are ready and will be released in one package with drivers
for SounBlaster 128 music cards.

Further drivers, on which we are now working, are drivers for
SoundBlaster Live! cards. The work is advanced in ca. 80% on these
drivers.

Writing drivers is a very time-consuming work. Unlike drivers to
the previous Amiga cards, like those in Zorro slots, writing drivers
for PCI cards requires much more time. The reason is that drivers
for Amiga cards were prepared usually for one specific series (mask)
of chipsets around which they were produced. For example, CyberVision
64 3D cards were produced around the S3 ViRGE 86C325, chipset but
always only and solely for one series (mask) of these chipsets.
Our drivers for S3 cards support various chipsets of the S3 ViRGE,
but also have to run with all the series (masks) of these chipsets.
This applies to other drivers written by us, as well.

In the recent several months , production of other PCI busboards
for Amiga was announced. Probably many people believed that this
would result in co-operation of companies for writing drivers
for PCI cards. We guess such co-operation would be beneficial for
users of Amiga with PCI slots.

Elbox has written drivers for Voodoo3, Voodoo4, Voodoo5 and S3
Virge graphic cards and Ethernet cards.

We hoped that if a new busboard is to be introduced to the market,
its authors will prepare drivers for these PCI cards, for which
no Amiga support is available as yet. Then, by licensing, they
would make available their drivers for working with Mediator,
receiving in return licences for drivers prepared by Elbox.

Well, as we see , the trend is completely different:

The only drivers which are made for other PCI busboards are drivers
to these PCI cards, to which Elbox has already written drivers.
Writing drivers to these PCI cards, to which drivers have been
written and made available by Elbox, is like solving a difficult
problem in physics, when you already have seen its solution...

Therefore, soon we will make available drivers for Mediator to
such PCI cards, which due to technical reasons cannot work in PCI
busboards other than Mediator.

We also hope that external developers will write drivers for
PCI cards. SDK for Mediator is available free of charge after
signing NDA.
However, prospective developers have to remember that:
- They should approach appropriate companies about documentation
to PCI card chipsets, to which they want to write drivers.
Usually, such companies require signing an individual NDA.
Also, questions about operation of the PCI cards of interest
to them must be asked with these companies.
- PCI specifications are property of PCI SIG and may be acquired
  at http://www.pcisig.org.

> 3. Is there a solution within reach to the 4mb memory window problem
> on early mediators with BlizzPPC cards? Or will AND have to wait
> for the Shark?

For users of BlizzPPC cards with Mediator PCI produced last year
we are preparing a special offer for upgrading to the appropriate
MACH chip.

> 4. It seems Hyperion has mostly completed the Warp3d drivers for
> Voodoo3. How long until we can see the true power of Voodoo3 on the
> Mediator?

This question should be asked to Hyperion.

Elbox accepted financial conditions of the Hyperion company.
However, the Hyperion company so far was not able to give any
specific date when their Warp3D drivers to Voodoo3 for Mediator 1200
could be released, despite numerous earlier assurances (since December
2000) on the part of the Warp3D team that preparing such drivers is
only a matter of a few weeks.
As soon as Hyperion are able to give a definite date, there will
be nothing to be an obstacle for signing the contract.

> Well, that's all I can think of for now. Thanks in advance,
> and keep up the good work for the Amiga market!

June is a month of very intense work for us, as , apart from
all the things I have already written above, we now begin
production of three more Mediator busboards:
 - Mediator PCI ZIV for the Z-IV busboards,
 - Mediator PCI ZIII for any Amiga with Zorro III slots,
 - Mediator PCI 4000 for controlling Elbox Zorro III/PCI (7xZIII,
5xPCI, 1xVideo) busboard of the E/BOX 4000 tower system (known
also as Power Tower 4000 or Winner Tower 4000) for Amiga 4000D.

The two last models of Mediator are technologically the most
advanced busboards in the Amiga market for Amiga 3000/4000 computers.

Mediator ZIII and Mediator 4000 busboards for Amiga 3/4000 computers,
unlike other simplified bridges offered for Amiga with Zorro III slots,
support the most advanced Zorro III mechanisms like e.g. DMA between
PCI cards and memory in the turbo card and other features omitted in
these bridges, which are necessary for cards like SoundBlaster 128
or SoundBlaster Live! to work properly.

We are glad to be able to answer your questions. If you still have
any doubts, please drop us a line.

Best regards,

Ben Yoris (E-Mail)

NO Voodoo3-drivers of Hyperion for Mediator?
With permission of Ben Yoris (pr-manager of Hyperion) we post an e-mail of the Amiga-Mediator mailing list. It says that Hyperion Entertainment could not agree about licencing of Voodoo 3 drivers with Elbox. That means that at least Hyperion will not produce drivers for the PCI-board Mediator.

Read now the full comment of Ben Hermans of Hyperion:

Response from Ben Hermans, managing partner of Hyperion Entertainment:

"Elbox and Hyperion did NOT come to an agreement about licensing Voodoo 3 drivers because Elbox insisted that the Mediator 1200 would be the very first PCI solution to be supported (of all PCI boards on the market regardless for which machine A1200 or A4000).

There never was discussion about delivery dates.

The fact of the matter was that Elbox wanted us to do something which was clearly impossible both practically and legally.

Practically: we can't "unsupport" the Matay Prometheus PCI solution. Drivers are shipping with the Prometheus for some time now and it's impossible to turn back the hands of time and allow the Mediator 1200 drivers to be shipped first.

Legally: We entered into a legally binding contract with Matay for driver support. They paid us, Elbox didn't. We cannot legally delay release of the Prometheus drivers (which are already released anyway) just because Elbox wants us to. This is a clear breach of contract and runs contrary to the requirement of good faith which is a general principle of contract law.

In short, Elbox was trying to impose an impossible condition on us and as a result we failed to reach agreement about Voodoo 3 drivers.

I have e-mails from several staff members of Elbox to back up these claims.

Despite numerous attempts we could not convince Elbox that Mediator 1200 users really could care less about the fact that the Voodoo 3 drivers for an A4000 solution were shipping first.

The result is apparently that there won't be any 3D drivers for the Elbox products unless Elbox drops this ridiculous condition. Or somebody could invent a time-machine.

As anybody could see at the Benelux show, the Voodoo 3 drivers are quite ready and could be adapted to the Mediator 1200 in a relatively short time.

Mediator 1200 users interested in Voodoo 3 drivers should e-mail Elbox explaining that they don't care if an A4000 PCI busboard is supported first as long as they can finally get their Mediator 1200 drivers.

The ball is clearly in Elbox's court."

Hyperion Entertainment

Hyperion/DCE: Licence for Voodoo3-driver
DCE and Hyperion have made an agreement about the usage of the Warp 3D drivers for the G-REX PCI line Voodoo 3. Read the press release:

DCE licenses Voodoo 3 Warp 3D drivers for its G-REX line of PCI products

Hyperion Entertainment is pleased to announce that it has entered into a license agreement with DCE, producers of the G-REX line of PCI hardware for the Amiga.

Under the agreement Hyperion will support DCE's G-REX 1200 and G-REX 4000 products with fully featured Warp 3D Voodoo 3 drivers for both 68K and PPC.

« We're very pleased that DCE has decided to respond to demand by its customers for Warp3D drivers for Voodoo 3 », says Ben Hermans, managing partner of Hyperion Entertainment . « Amiga users currently have quite a number of PCI solutions to chose from and the manufacturers offering the widest range of drivers for their PCI solutions will clearly have a competitive advantage. From the large number of e-mails we have received, we can only conclude that the availability of 3D drivers is a key consideration for users when they make their decision to purchase a specific PCI solution. To avoid disappointment, we once again urge users interested in 3D graphics to investigate the availability of Warp3D drivers before purchasing a specific PCI solution. » (ps)

Martin Schueler (E-Mail)

AmigaOne Board: Status Report by Martin Schueler
As promised on the BAS2001 (see First report) Martin Schueler has sent us a summary of the lecture about the AmigaOne board and technical details.

Status

The lecture mainly was similar to the one already lectured on the WoA, but of course contained updated information regarding the time schedule. Important about this is that the beta test will close middle of September, which at the same time will mark the starting shot for the first line.

Moreover the new revision of the AmigaONE boards - plugged into an Eyetech tower - was shown. One was able to tangible ("forcibly") convince oneself of how sophisticated and solid even the mechanical solution was done, and that it is by no means some unstable kind of tinkering solution. But we deliberately used a board only quipped with PCI/AGP sockets, to prevent our electrostatic sensible testing boards from any possible damage.

Following the status report from which I took the answers on respective questions, on the show:

During production the first revision formed short cuts on several points of which some were irreparable. It was not possible to obviate the latter during production without knowing the problem in advance.

For the new revision we had changed the respective points, but also several other points, in a way that reduced production requirements. Furthermore we corrected mechanical reference measurements, which prevented the first revision from being precisely assembled inside the casing.

Also the non-technical problems were fixed and the testings efficiently proceed on schedule since June 8th. It is especially joyful that all of the testings (contrary to common expectations due to complexity) succeeded on the first go, which was finally a result of their carful preparation, too.

All significant testings on board level are already finished. The following testing work is limited to verification of the logic within WestBridge and NorthBridge and it's interaction with the standard components.

This is to talk about ca. 10% of those testings are done. But virtually this means that already 50% of the problematic and time critical points are covered. Nevertheless those succeeded on the first go. So schedule risks are more and more decreasing. Furthermore 100% of the problematic points are functional of which malfunction would mean total outage, in worst case.

I also added three pictures:

picture_1.jpg
(640 x 480)

picture_2.jpg
(640 x 480)

picture_3.jpg
(640 x 480)

The first one shows the rev2 board (equipped with PCI/AGP only) as it was presented on the show in Rotterdam. But the other one shows one of the equipped rev2 boards as these were used for the testings. All of the testings succeeded on the first go using the board in the picture. Third picture: The slots in this picture are simply put on, cause I think it looks much nicer if it is fully equipped :-).

For the rest the board will be tested as stand-alone for a very long time. The connection to the A1200 will be done at the very end.

Events: BAS 2001 - Report form the organizers
The Benelux Amiga Show 2001 has ended..., we tasted a lot of welding while organization, but it was worth it cause more than 400 visitor mean a brilliant result to us. Only as number 400 visitors are not much, but in case of an Amiga only show in the Netherlands this is an encouraging number. Amiga still exists!

A short report from our point of view:

Very early in the morning, at 8:00 am, we started to set up the show. With three overloaded cars full of hardware and software, posters, beamers, audio equipment, and somewhere in between all that even the drivers, we took the first stuff to the show. Bjorn Lynne was already there and had put up at table on the first floor.

At about 10:00 am a quite normal dancing school was converted to an Amiga building....

The first visitors contacted already at 9:00 am (with well dressed hair and gem chewing). One or the other way it was announced that the show would start already at 10:00 am. We would like to apologize for this misinformation and we hope that waiting was less hard, cause of the good weather.

This was our first time to organize such a show; hopefully this was not too clear to see.... Anyway, we learned some things to do it better next time (?). Nevertheless most of what we organized succeeded very well, as we think.

10:00 am: Petro Tyschtschenko arrives, as usual in a good temper, also after little sleep (he has sat with Juergen Haage until 4:00 am and has had a few beers too much).

10:30 am: The participants of the LAN party are let in and guided to the first floor. Very much people are waiting outside, now. Might it be that we unnecessarily were in doubt about enough visitors?

11:00 am: The show begins! There are plenty, plenty, PLENTY OF PEOPLE! A heavy burden is taken from us....

I won't talk about everything in detail, now. That was already done by other people (for which we say thank you). Just a few things which attracted us in especially.....

In our opinion the presentation of by Eyetech and Escena were a bit too technical and might have been done more attractive, some how. The slides could have been done more interesting than it was actually done. However the presentation gave a good sight of what is being done and why. After the presentation people had the opportunity to consult Alan Redhouse and Martin Schueler for more information.

Fleecy Moss impressed us. His jokes and his enthusiasm are really great. A good exponent of the Amiga Spirit. Unfortunately he could attend the show for a short time, only.

Bjorn Lynne presented his music and sold his CD's on the first floor. According to what he told us, he sold more CD's than he expected. He was very satisfied and did a lot autographs. But the Dutch beers were a little to small to him...., the British are used to something different.....

Did anybody notice that there was a not announced ´special guest´? Bill Buck of VIScorp. He talked to many of the Amiga VIP's. Could that be of any meaning? Who knows..... (http://www.fhi-berlin.mpg.de/amiga/ar/ar407/feature6.HTML)

Mr. Does of Vesalia and his wife were on the show, too.

Matay showed a first class product; who missed it ..., what a pity, what a pity.

There was another premiere, too (more about this later on); the first game (Asteroids look-a-like) for the AmigaDE by an unknown SDK user (I could not find the name).

Some of the VIP's whispered some nice news to the print magazine 'AmigaScene', which we will publish in the next issue (in cooperation with amiga-news.de). For example there are good news regarding Amiga OS4.

One small anecdote: On his train journey to Rotterdam Fleecy really was in dire need of a toilet, but nobody informed him that he was floundering waiting in front of a strictly and all-the-time closed toilet for staffers only, for minutes.... Poor Fleecy.

There were visitors from Norway, Germany, Poland, Belgium, France, England, and Spain (20 hours by car....!).

An editor of a Dutch TV station talked to Petro, Juergen, Alan, Fleecy, and many of the visitors about the Amiga and it's cult status. She was very impressed and will - like already announced - do a broadcast about Amiga only, after summer. She will talk to even more Amiga personalities. It is planned to take more shots in Germany, the Netherlands, and the U.S.A..

People from a Dutch radio station were also on the show and on the following Saturday a special broadcast about the show and anything to see there will be put to air.

Petro acted as a fairy of fortune at 4:00 pm and drew the winners of the lottery in which any visitor could take part. He twice drew visitors from Germany but which unfortunately already had left the show. Those missed among other things an Amiga poster with Bill McEwen's autograph on it, a number of Amiga CD's, a music CD by Bjorn Lynne, and a VIP diner.

Between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm we closed the show. The show was followed by the VIP diner with 27 guests. These guests had the opportunity to talk to each other about the show and Amiga subjects, without ruffle or excitement in an easeful atmosphere. The VIP's were very excited about the multitude of visitors. This encourages them to go on developing.

About 11:00 pm it all was over. Petro and Juergen were picked with a long Mercedes and taken to the hotel, like super-stars. Then the rest of the people went home, too.

Still many pictures will follow by us - from the set-up to the after-party - and Juergen Haage promised to send us pictures from the secret VIP meeting at 11:00 am.

We would like to use this opportunity to heartily thank all of the visitors of the show. You really showed that the Amiga is alive and has good chances to return strong. We thank amiga-news.de for reporting; the way Petra Struck supported us really rules!

More information, pictures, and links to other reports can be found at amiga-news.de and of course on the BAS 2001 website.

A lot of greetings to the Amiga community
The organizers of the Benelux Amiga Show 2001

AmiSectorOne: New members, games, demos, and covers
Probably you remember my news posting of 12 June which was called "New staff members are required". Finally I have made my choice and here are the new team members (sorted by the time they joined):
  • Marcos Alves from Portugal
  • Keith Michaels from the USA
  • Tony Whent from Australia
  • Holger Herrmann from Germany
The new team members will be responsible for different parts here on AMI Sector One. Also I am just working with a kind contributor called Gustavo to improve our scripts. Some other projects are in preparation too... More about this in the next weeks. You can read some notes about the new members in the staff section.

Now the games update:
Patricia Curtis (formerly project manager and assistant programmer at Apache Software) as well as Mark Page (formerly programmer at Apache Software) allowed us to upload the Amiga game Super Methane Bros. (a game similar to Bubble Bobble, but with better graphics and sounds). You can download different versions of this game: There is a CD32-HD version (does not run on emulators) and an ADF version. Like so often I would like to stress that this game is NOT freeware. P. Curtis and M. Page are still the copyright owners and they granted a permission which is ONLY valid for this site.

Btw: I am looking for the game "Murder makes strange Deadfollows CDTV" by Tiger Media. Is there somebody of you who has it? Please get in contact with me (Bernd)...

And here are the high quality Public Domain games of this update:
  • Jouster 3 (the arcade classic Joust for the Amiga)
  • Kamakazi Killers (good Galaga game)
  • Rattlesnake (street fighting game)

New AGA demos are:
  • Repugnance
  • Roswell
  • Response
  • Tear down the Wall
  • Some Justice
Also a disk with the results of the Amega Party - Gfx Competiton was uploaded.

Here are some new cover- and box scans:
  • A320 Airbus (the game itself will soon be available here)
  • Big 6- Dizzy Collection CD32
  • Case of the Cautious Condor CDTV
  • Chinese Karate
  • Euro Soccer '88
  • Fallen Angel
  • Hard Drivin'
And here is a last minute update:

You can now download ALL 18 LSD Sprint Docs Disks (Sprint Docs provide cheats, solutions, freezer addresses etc). Of course every Sprint Disk has got its own HTML and screenshots. Thanks to the new member Marcos who made it possible. I hope you enjoyed this update. In the future the updates will be bigger since the staff has grown. Also you can expect more updates during the week. (sd)

Virus Help: xvs.library V33.26
The xvs.library (External Virus Support Library) has been updated today.

Here is some info about the release:

Name : xvs.library v33.26
Archive name : xvslibrary.lha
Archive size : 55.988 bytes
Release date : 24 June 2001
Programmer : Jan Erik Olausen
Email : virusexecutor@c2i.net

News for 33.26:
  • Added Bobek2 Link virus
Thanks to Jan Andersen for the files.
Thanks to Zeeball for the memory removal routines.
  • Added Expl0de Trojan Link virus
  • Added Expl0de Trigger File virus
Thanks to Jan Andersen for the files.
  • Renamed 8x8 Link to Motaba-3
Still to do:
  • Add a new link virus...
This virus is brand new, so if you got this requester:
"POWYÚSZA INFORMACJA MA NA CELU ZAZNAJOMIENE
    I OSTRZEÚEME CIË PRZED NIEZWYKLE
    NIEBEZPIECZNYM WIRUSEM!"
    "OSTRZEÚME"

    in english:
"This information is just for telling you
    and warn you about extremely
    dangerous virus!"

    "WARNING!"

    you have been infected...
  • Add Neurotic Death 1 - 5. These five link viruses are polymorphic, but crash on my system if I try to infect some test files. It seems that they haven't been spread to the public, I received them anonymously from the author. So it's not that BIG danger at the moment.
  • Try to get and add GlobVec link virus. The only one who has it is Heiner Schneegold (author of VT-Schutz) and VTC Hamburg, but Heiner doesn't give his permission to the VTC to send me the virus :(

NARR-Site: New Voyager Theme and Update
Again I did a new fresh and sunny theme named 'SummerTheme' for the Amiga web-browser Voyager. The archive contains the usual buttons represented by exotic fruits and with matching background pic, this time. The images a are quite big, so higher screen resolutions are advised.

Screenshot Link - 328 kB
Download: summertheme.lha - 174 kB

Additionally I have completely reworked the NARR website. Most of all the Amiga section now is more clear sorted by categories, to make you more easily finding what you are looking for. There are new downloads, too, e.g. a small icons set, and catalogs. The admin section was enhanced, too: there are new screenshots of my cartoon anims, which are currently available for free, and the biggest animation (Hr. Apfel) now is available as MPEG version, also. Also new is the 'Personal Amiga' section. Have fun while rummaging. :)

Benelux Amiga Show: Report and Pictures by the AUC-HB
The Amiga User Club Bremen, AUC-HB, has send us an extended report and these nice pictures from the BAS 2001.

Report about the Benelux Amiga Show 2001 in Rotterdam, Netherlands

In the morning at 3:00 h four members from Nordenham, Leer, Langwedel, Bremen of the Amiga User Club Bremen met to travel to the show. After four hours of traveling by car we arrived in the Hammerstraat in northern Rotterdam.

We were hungry and wanted something to eat in a moment (Mc´D or some bakery). But unfortunately we had to realize, that hairdressers open their shops before the bread shops; not to talk about Mc´D, cause they open not before 9:00 am. After we finally found a baker, who pleased us with a marvelous breakfast, we went to the show which was supposed to begin on 10:00 am.

On 9:30 am Juergen Haage and Petry Tyschtschenko arrived by taxi. Since we know Mr. Haage and Petro in person we had a short talk. Mr. Haage and Petro then disappeared to join a meeting with Fleecy Moss, Alan Redhouse, and Ben Hermans.

On 11:00 am, one hour later than announced, the inlet started. The admission charge for visitors from outside was at the promised DM5. Our impression was that the organizers really took pain to build up the show. The show was arranged on two floors. There were enough seats and room for discussions.

At one booth we could have a look at an Amiga 4000D with the Prometheus PCI board by Matay, equipped with a Voodoo 3000 and running the game Heretic II. We were glowing by the display by this graphics board.

At the booth beside of this booth a PC with the AmigaSDK installed was running. We were impressed by this presentation, too. Moreover several Amigas from club-members were networked and a LAN party took place.

Petro opened the Amiga museum with a speech and then was helpful and councillor and his assistance was heavily enlisted; he handed out stickers and pins.

The show was attended very well and from 2:00 pm it was really filled, since the Scala presentation of the AmigaONE took place, done via screen by Alan Redhouse and Martin Schueler. They had a good projector and sound was well, so everyone could get it.

The strategy for AmigaONE and AmigaOS 4 to 5 was put across, but which was already known by us. During the break we had the opportunity to have a look at the AmigaONE board plugged into a V-Tower. We don't want to address the information we got from Martin Schueler, now. The board was shown working, but we can imagine it to able to be presented working, soon.

During the discussion with Fleecy Moss, Juergen Haage, Alan Redhouse, Ben Hermans, and Martin Schueler queries regarding the AmigaONE AND AmigaOS 4 - 5 could be done. This was richly done, and as we learned the organizer of the show is about to put those questions and answers online.

We took a lot of pictures on the show, but to edit all of them will take some time. We handed out to amiga-news.de a first selection. Our video specialist Ralf has done a video of the show for our members.

We met Mrs. and Mr. Does (Vesalia, German Amiga vendor) and Jens Schoenfeld (Individual Computer) and intensively talked. The show was a clear success to us not comparable with the last years' shows in Cologne and Neuss, since that was an Amiga only show. We felt to be part of a big community. From Mr. Haage we got the latest BoingBag for OS3.9 on a bank card sized CD. At 4:00 pm we went on our journey back home to Bremen.

Thanks to the organizers of the Benelux Amiga Show 2001 !!!

Among other things has a security bug been fixed in this version. This release also introduces REBOL/View for the Macintosh. This is a significant accomplishment. The following has been changed compared with the previous version:
  • Bugfix: Icon DRAW evaluation bug that allowed foreign code to be executed at the desktop level. That problem has been eliminated. (Note that this bug did NOT compromise REBOL's built-in sandbox file protection, as that protection still remained in effect at the REBOL/View root directory level. Files outside of REBOL's directory tree were safe.) DRAW is no longer allowed within desktop icons.
  • Bugfix: The HTTP POST operation has been fixed to properly ignore line termination in the transfer. You no longer need to pad out your HTTP uploads. (This is for read/custom http://... [post "data"]).
  • Bugfix: Bugs that caused load/markup and debase to crash in rare cases have also been fixed.
The current version for different systems can be found in the download area of rebol.com. (sd)

Benelux Amiga Show: first report (update 3)
Otis from the Amiga User Club Bremen has just given us first details about the show by phone. First of all it has to be said that the dance school where the event is taking place is overcrowded as many, many visitors have come. For the promoters of the show in any case a big success.

The event is taking place on two floors with the exhibitors being downstairs and the LAN party happening upstairs.

During the call I had the opportunity to talk to Martin Schüler from ESCENA who's working on the design of the AmigaOne board by Eyetech. The AmigaOne board is presented as prototype in second revision. The board isn't working yet. For now they continue step by step and every step done until now has worked without any problems. He'll try to give us more technical information during the day via email.

Supplement:
I just had again the chance to talk to Thomas from the AUC-HB, who gave us more impressions via telephone about the show. Those will be posted here as short notes as there'll be a full report done by the AUCB following tomorrow:

Petro Tyschtschenko hold the opening speech.

Interesting was the presentation of the PCI board Prometheus by Matay on which a Voodoo3000 graphics board was running. A version of the game ´Heretic II´ running on this board was shown so everyone could convince himself of the board's quality.

Fleecy Moss of Amiga Inc. presented the SDK (Software Developer Kit) and was at disposal to answer questions. On this occasion the AmigaOS 5.0 planned for the year 2003 was mentioned.

On a Q&A round Fleecy Moss, Alan Redhouse, Martin Schüler and Jürgen Haage answered to the questions of the visitors.

Supplement 2:
At Fun Time World you find some photos of the show, and a comprehensive report will follow.

Supplement 3:
Here's the full report of Fun Time World. (ps)

Amiga Arena News
Amiga Arena special discount campaign
In co-operation with Andre Beer the Amiga Arena makes a special price for GeoWorld possible. GeoWorld is the only geography program for the Amiga that is still in development. Please visit for further information the GeoWorld homepage.

Amiga Arena - GeoWorld call
GeoWorld is one of the very few programs that stand out against the usual Amiga software. The developers have collected a huge amount of information and data to make GeoWorld as comprehensive as possible. Despite this such a program "lives" of its up-to-date data.

To make faster updates possible and offer furtheron an allround program the developers need your help. The following tasks are available:

  • Continuing the recollection of the nature data of the countries.
  • A co-operation on the information data of GeoWorld would therefore need an intellectual reception of the source texts made available (scanned encyclopedia pages, html/text files taken from the internet, partly in English) and put them into corresponding texts (e.g. description of a country's nature).
A free full version will of course be made available. Further fees - participation in sales returns - for appropriate extensive co-operation are possible but don't expect any wonders. People with interest may please mail to: Andre Beer.

Amiga Arena remark by Olaf Köbnik
Surely many of you wonder why this all? Sources for information are offered by the internet, and many programs for the PC do so, too. But I belong to the little number of Amiga users who are "Amiga only", and I personally think it is very valuable that such programs will be developed on the Amiga in the future. Additionally it is much more fun for me to use information sources on the Amiga. I can only ask you to support programs like AmiAtlas and Geoworld with feedback etc.! (ps)

Matay

Matay news
Warp3D Treiber for Voodoo3
Matay informs that the promised Warp3D drivers for Voodoo3 graphics cards on the PCI board Prometheus are in the works and has put some screenshots online.

PPC for Prometheus
As many people ask about CPU boards for the PCI board Prometheus, Matay gives the following statement:
  1. Matay is not going to produce the PPC card by itself. We will choose among the CPU solutions available at the market (not necessarily "Amiga native" only). It would take too much time and concern to produce such a card, time we can spend providing you with other Amiga-specifict products. Why to invent wheel again?
  2. The only problem to solve is software support to make the hardware cooperate with our PCI bridge. However, with the help of AmigaOS4 developers from Amiga Inc. it is not a problem at all. We will cooperate with them to make Prometheus+CPU card combo 100% compatible with the upcoming AmigaOS.
  3. We are not limiting our support to one CPU card only. You should view a CPU card expansion the same as - for example - a graphics card expansion. More than one solution is possible.
  4. The details will be announced after we finish talks with the CPU cards manufacturers. As we always state - no promises, only facts, so please be patient. In meanwhile, you can use Prometheus boards with the existing Amiga CPU cards. The software, i.e. AmigaOS4, will arrive later this year, so will our hardware to run it on.
Vacation time
Because of vacation time, the phone number +48 609394778 and the e-mail address fei@matay.pl won't be available from June 22nd to July 9th, 2001 and from July 21st to September 6th, 2001. Contact Matay during these times at +48 603785100 and info@matay.pl instead. (ps)

Amiga Arena news
Amiga Arena full version: Offensive COLOURS
With permission of Carsten Magerkurth and Andreas Magerl, Amiga Arena makes the release of Offensive COLOURS possible! Offensive COLOURS is the exciting synthesis of Tetris and breakout.

You steer a spaceship in the center of the screen; colored blocks grow out of the screen borders towards you. To stop them, you are armed with a colored disc with which you can shoot at the blocks.

Should the color of the disc match that of the shot block, your score increases and the block vanishes. If not, the disc will be thrown back to you and the colors of block and disc will be exchanged. The new color of the disc then maybe allows the elimination of another block.

If your disc hits a row of blocks that have the same color, the entire row vanishes. The first block scores the usual points, any further two times the usual points. The game ends when the blocks have reached you.

Amiga Arena download: Renegarde
With permission of Wayne Ashworth, the action game "Renegarde" is available for download. It is a freeware game. "Renegarde" is an "Alien Breed" clone for two players, fun and the inspired design speak for themselves. (ps)

CD32 Install Kit for Windows
As some emulation sites already posted this news, here's the official announcement for the Windows version of my CD32 Games Install Kit: It will work in connection with WinUAE and it will be available quite soon.

The compatibility is very high because every game uses custom patches (just like in the Amiga version). Additionally you won't have to install the game, you can run it right from the CD although in some cases some files have to be copied (which need to be patched). CD audio support is not supported yet but will be added for sure later. The first version of the CD32 Games Install Kit 4.5 (Win32 1.0) can be expected in one week. But currently it will be only available for owners of the The Best Of Airsoft Softwair Gold Edition CD-ROM. There are some screenshots of the Windows version available at the Airsoft Softwair homepage. (ps)

Chip: Amiga: New computer and software
»With AmigaOS 4.0 and the computer AmigaOne PPC 1200, a myth will be brought back to life within the next weeks. This was announced by Bill McEwen, CEO of Amiga, on Thursday. According to information from McEwen there's besides the American company headquarter only one more office in Braunschweig.«

AMIGA Inc.: News from CEO Bill McEwen (Executive Update)
Greetings To The Amiga Family:

There have been some recent mis-representations that I have recently received about Amiga, Inc., and our office locations. Amiga is doing very well, and we are excited about the future of Amiga. The Amiga Family continues to grow with new partners, new products, and the very near release of AmigaDE 1.0.

However with all of this activity there have been some out there who have recently sent out false information about Amiga, and I need to clarify this now.

Amiga Incorporated is headquartered in Snoqualmie, Washington USA.

Amiga Deutschland is still in business. We have only closed the Langen office. There are going to be some new additions, and a new office location announced in the next couple of weeks, but know now that Amiga International was a Gateway company, and was not and has not been associated with Amiga, Inc. since 1999. The dealer in Germany that is making claims that they are Amiga International is completely false, and Amiga Incorporated the parent company of Amiga Deutschland is going to take legal action against those who make these false claims.

There is another dealer in India who has started claiming that they are Amiga in India. This again is also false. Amiga does NOT have any official representation in India outside of the Amiga dealers who are there. Amiga Incorporated is currently evaluating an office in India, and other countries where we do business.

To those of you who continue to try and tear Amiga apart, it is time to stop. Amiga is moving forward, there are great things ahead, and for the first time in many years, the Amiga family will have new products, and choices.

I look forward to a great year.

Kindest regards,

Bill McEwen (ps)

de Volkskrant: "Tulip" reviving the Commodore brand?
It's been reported in a Dutch national newspaper that computer company Tulip intend to bring the Commodore brand back to life in some capacity. Tulip spokesman J. van den Berg claims the company is simply responding to customer calls for Commodore. Whether this means some real Commodore hardware is on its way or all it is is simply a line of PCs with the Commodore logo slapped on the outside is still unclear, but Dutch readers will no doubt find this article very interesting...! File manager: Directory Opus 6 released
As already reported, yesterday, in the article File manager: DirOpus V4.15m Beta the PC version Directory Opus 6 was released at GP Software. While rummaging in the Aminet uploads I stumbled upon the following text inside the DOpus6 readme file (title link):

"ALL REGISTERED USERS OF DIRECTORY OPUS 5 FOR THE AMIGA ARE ENTITLED TO A 25% CROSSGRADE DISCOUNT ON THE PURCHASE PRICE."

This is interesting for Amiga users using a PC, too, and not wanting to miss their favourite file manager. The 30-days-PC-test-version is available e.g. here (DOpusInstall.exe). (ps)

Golem: Transmeta sales decreasing drastically
»Orders from Japan decreasing
The still fresh processor developer Transmeta now also warns of intelligibly lower sales in 2Q01. For a reason they mention the bad economical situation which now spreads to Japan, too - Japan is Transmeta's biggest market place.

Though additional manufacturers to produce their own chips could have been gained, orders from Japanese Notebook manufacturers are significant low. Therefore Transmeta adjust their sales expectancy to 40% - 45% below sales in 1Q01 (18.6 millions USD).«

Asyncio.library (68k+WarpOS) update
There's a new update for the asyncio.library with WarpOS support (V40.6). Sadly the last version had the same problems in PPC writing mode than before. This update fixes these problems so that there shouldn't be any more lock-ups on writing with PPC.

If there shouldn't be any problems with it, this will be the last version since there'll be no more optimizations by me that could make the library more efficient.

EETimes: Startup says software translates binary code on the fly
The article, published in EETimes, deals with the announcement of an american startup. A short extract:

»LONDON - A spin-off from the University of Manchester, Transitive Technologies Ltd., is planning to wow engineers at the Embedded Processor Forum this week in San Jose, Calif., with its dynamic binary-translation technology.
The San Diego company claims its Dynamite software can take binary code ready to run on one type of processor and, on the fly, translate it into the binary code required by another. Transitive also says that because of optimizing routines within its software, the translated code usually runs faster and more efficiently than the original native code.
If these claims are substantiated, Transitive could spark dramatic changes in the way processor hardware is designed and deployed by ending the architecture-loyalty and legacy-code issues that have dominated for the last 20 years.«

Event: iBox at Benelux Amiga Show (update)
Beside the already reported VIP's and highlights the new IBOX will be presented.

iBox

The IBOX is some kind of special tower containing beside the normal PC-hardware an Amiga-mainboard, a modem, and some additional hardware. The PC is able to control and update Amiga-software like Scala/Mediapoint by using a special software. The IBOX is doing what the Amiga does best: loop playback. By using the PC-software everyone can use every possibility offered in the digitalmarket like webcams and digitalcameras.

This concept is currently used by many customers for example for sportbars and tourist information centers. The concept includes the possibility of updating hundrets of these boxes by pressing one button. Even a cellphone with wap-capabilities is able to start this process. A good example for the co-operation of Amiga and PC.

The concept and the IBOX were developed by www.oto-foto.nl and www.digitalconsult.nl.

Error correction, 19 June 2001:
I misunderstood one item of Marvin's description of the iBox (Info-Box). Contrary to what is described there is no PC hardware used in the box. It rather is fact that the customers create the info pages on common PC machines and then those pages will be translated to Amiga language by a 'translator' which makes it possible to use Amiga hardware in the box.

A text can be sent to the Amiga using a cell phone which then will be displayed as desired due to the background, logo, and animation preset. (ps)

Amiga: SCSI Driver for AmigaOS4
The AmigaOne specification contain an on-board IDE controller, but much of the Amiga users use SCSI hardware (harddrives, CD drives, scanners).

That's why Amiga Inc.plans to develop a SCSI driver for the "NCR SCSI scripts chip" for Amiga OS4.x (today, NCR is a subsidiary company of LSI Logic).

An internal document describing the reasons why these chips have been chosen was published on the AmigaOne mailing list (title link). The same chip was utilized in diverse Amiga products (e.g. in newer Phase5 acceleration cards).

These chips are to be of first class at Amiga Inc. at this time, but this decision might change if a better solution would turn out.

Amiga Extreme

Warp3D: Voodoo Driver Status
Amiga Extreme has published an e-mail by Thomas Frieden (Hyperion) in which he reports the current status of the Voodoo driver for Warp3D.

The Warp3D team converted almost everything relating the use of the FIFO command. As the team was suggested the frame-rate now majorly is independent from the resolution. The speed at 800x600 is exactly the same as at 320x200.

Heretic 2 is still playable at 1024x768, but the Voodoo card starts to slow down from this resolution.

Moreover the Voodoo version looks much better than the Permedia version. (Screenshots (left: Permedia2, right: Voodoo)).

At this time it seems like the Prometheus version of the driver would be finished first. This might happen next week already. The G-REX and hopefully the Mediator version, too, will follow soon after.

The Prometheus driver will be the first because of the G-REX prototype had a little problem preventing FIFO from working. So, development was done on the Prometheus board.

Development of Warp3D now is done using the new gcc basing StormC 4 which creates fine code, already. Additionally it enables the use of Inline assembler. By some PPC assembler optimizations the Warp3D team now can almost fill up the bus with data to almost reach the maximum performance.

Supplement 17 June 2001:
Ben Yoris (Hyperion) wrote on ANN that Hyperion will do a presentation of their own games on the Prometheus PCI board with a Voodoo3 plugged in on the Benelux Amiga Show, which will take place on June 23rd, 2001. (sd)

MUI: NList.mcc V19.99 and V19.100
Under the title link you will find the long awaited bugfix for NList.mcc fixing the wordwrap problem.

There are also new betas with noticeable higher speed to find there. Especially inserting/removing of a lot of entries at once takes much time in the list-view of NList.

That's why save and management routines were optimized. With some of the operations NList now is up to 3.5 times faster than the old version. Even the origin must surrender for some items (factor 1.2 - 1.3). But to compare directly is not quite fair, since NList offers a lot of features more and therefore has to calculate more, sometimes.

Furthermore NListtree of course benefits from the new performance.

#AmigaFun: HBMonopoly online game
The #AmigaFun IRC channel on ie.altnet.org organizes and manages the second official HBMonopoly game of this month. It will take place on June 16th starting 6:00 pm.

The programmer of HBMonopoly will participate as well. HBMonopoly 2.6 is required. This version will be available from some people on the #AmigaFun channel should it not already be on the homepage.

The server which have to be configured in HBMonopoly will be named on the #AmigaFun channel. Important: you have to know how HBMonopoly works. We'll only explain how to log in. We'll assume that you have played at least one, two times against the computer.

In future we'll organize more HBMonopoly games. There's already a #AmigaFun-internal highscore list which you can have a look at on the #AmigaFun homepage. It will also contain the top 5 of all HBMonopoly games we'll organize in the future.

It is possible that after some games there'll be a surprise for the best gamer. The first HBMonopoly game starts Saturday June 16th, 2001 at 6:00 pm. Please note that Monopoly may take several hours, so you should have a full version of your TCP client (Miami, Genesis).

You'll find our #AmigaFun channel as follows:
You need an IRC client. For the Amiga there are AmIRC (shareware), BlackIRC (freeware) and EpicIRC (freeware). On our homepage, you'll find download links. You just have to enter:

Server: ie.altnet.org
Port: 6667
Channel: #amigafun

Should the server be down you can get access through the following server:
12.30.169.83 (please enter without "irc.").

You can find more information, especially for IRC novices, on the #AmigaFun homepage. On this occasion I'd like to say that the homepage was entirely redesigned. You can choose between German and English language. (ps)

PC: ADF view
The ADF View is a Shell Namespace extension, which opens up the .ADF file extension. ADF files are Amiga Disk Files, or image dumps of AmigaDOS formatted disks. These files are used by most Commodore Amiga emulator software.

Because ADF View is a namespace extension, it is integrated right into the Windows Explorer. Double-clicking on an ADF file brings up the familiar folder view, where you can copy, move, delete, recover and rename files as you would usually do with normal PC files. You can also drag'n'drop files from any Windows folder to an ADF folder, and back.

ADF View works with Amiga floppy images and hard disk images. It even detects Amiga hard drives attached to your computer and adds a new drive icon to the "My Computer" folder under Windows NT/2000.

New and empty disk images can be created using a Wizard under the Shell New commands (The File/New sub-menu in the Windows Explorer).

(New) informations on GREX 4000 and MicroServer
René Thol has received some interesting informations from DCE on the G-Rex 4000 board and summarizes:
  1. the GREX 4000 is ready, they're waiting only for the boards from the manufacturer.
  2. the GREX 4000 replaces the the daughterboard (ISA-, ZIII- and videoslots) on the motherboard and is connected with the port for the CVPPC on the Cyberstorm board.
  3. the TV board drivers for the GREX are still in the works and are thus no longer mentioned in the GREX advertising since only finished drivers are advertised there.
  4. AGP extensions are not planned. The AGP slots of the AmigaOne will also work only through PCI with the resulting speed.
  5. The planned DCE Microserver will be plugged later in one of the PCI slots and features two SDRAM slots with 133 MHz bus speed. It can be used as busmaster and has access to the entire Amiga hardware. Sadly, a Cyberstorm board already working in the Amiga has still to be used and its processors can not access the SDRAM (buswidth through PCI too narrow). Because of a CPU socket, more current CPUs than the G3/G4 can be used later. Existing PPC applications won't run immediately on the new CPUs (due to addressing and such) but have to be be adapted through (minor) changes in the sourcecode and a special library.

Heise: mp3PRO: MP3 Successor joining the Race
»Since today, 14th June, the first official demo version of the designated MP3 successor mp3PRO is available for free download on Coding Technologies' website. The "RCA Demo mp3PRO Player/Encoder 1.0" plays Mp3(PRO) files as well as wav-files. The latter can also be converted to the new mp3PRO format at a non-varying bit-rate of 64 kbit/s. The new and downwards compatible format augurs a substantial better quality of sound at low bit-rates, due to "spectral band replication" (SBR). «

Back to the Roots: Download Hours Fixed
BTTR downloads now disabled 2/3 of each day!

Our archive files will only be available for download from 06:10 to 13:10 GMT (may vary), but they should work at full speed then. We are not happy about this, but unless we find some sponsors, we have to prevent our archive from being closed down by this action. If we find we can extend the times outward more, we will.

The entire content of the site (except all downloads, full-size pictures and the mod player) will continue to work the entire day. The same applies to the Aminet downloads, as they are not stored on these servers.

If you are willing to help us by either donating money to pay parts of our traffic, by purchasing targeted advertising at our site or by providing us a fast dedicated *nix server somewhere else, please contact traffic@back2roots.org.

Several thousand people visit this site each day, and create the enormous traffic together. Some download more, some download less. It would be nice if a few of you could also help us to keep this monster comfortable for people of all time zones.

Many of you have surely noticed that most of the gaming archive sites were closed down recently. These sites all paid their traffic by advertising. So did we. However, this does not work for archive sites anymore, since advertising prices dropped horribly worldwide.

We have several ideas in the queue to find an income to finance this site for your convenience. Just none which will work fast enough. So please also contact us if you want to provide temporary help.

To all companies who have licensed games to be offered at our site for free: BTTR will continue to be a non profit project, and we did never earn a single pence with it, and we will continue to do so. (ps)

New Screenshots of the AmigaDE GUI
Under the title link there is a posting by Fleecy Moss (AmigaOne mailing list) along with several pictures attached to the mail.

Matt Chaput (together with other people) in deed has been authorized to design the new GUI.

Fleecy explained that "of course these still are prototypes and eventually will be 'skinnable' (configurable with skins). But the pictures should give a good impression of where things are going".

Update: (08.08.2012, cg)

Added the two screenshots mockups that could still be found on the net. (ps)

Amiga Arena news
Amiga Arena full versions
With permission of Stefan Berge Amiga Arena publishes the full version of "FileCutter". "FileCutter" enables you to divide files of any size into as many pieces as you like.
Because of that it is possible to transport a 4 MB big file which you cannot archive to spread on 5 disks (720 kb).
In the newest version it works with files which were divided by NortonCommander on a PC. A great thanks to Andreas Magerl who placed the full version at your disposal.

Amiga Arena pre-release
The popular Workbench-game "ArTKanoid" (breakout clone) of Thilo Köhler is exclusively online in version 1.2 right before Aminet.

Amiga Arena updates
"Blade" which is an action-RPG-game of Mark Sheeky is ready for download in the harddrive-version. Exclusively in the German version.

Amiga Arena - "The Boss": German catalog
The German locale for "The Boss" was created by Richard Kapp and is in the archive.

Amiga Arena special price action
In co-operation with Nemeth Miklos Amiga Arena makes a special price for "LangTools" possible. With "LangTools" you can translate texts. You can easily load a text and simultaneously translate the text with an editor.
You can choose between several languages and more will follow. "LangTools" is already in development and author Nemeth is looking forward to your feedback.

Amiga Arena interview action
At the same time an interview with Nemeth Miklos which is the developer of "LangTools" went online. (ps)

Matt Chaputs notions to GUI-design for AmigaDE
Under the title link you can find a document called AmigaUI Look. It was created by Matt Chaput which is the GlowIcon-designer. Looking at the first paragraph you can only suppose that Matt concerned with the GUI for AmigaDE at least in October 2000.

In section "Work" of his website you can also find the site Amiga GUIs which contains some screenshots of his notions:

Screen mock-up #2
Single window- and control elements

If Matt Chaput did it on behalf of Amiga Inc or just for fun and if he concerns with it today is unfortunately not known. (ps)

ASA - Amiga Software Archive (work in progress)
We will revive amiga-software.com on our server. Until its shutdown it was a regularly used service with an easy and fast overview about the latest Amiga software.

We want to continue this with the ASA (Amiga Software Archive). Users and coders can present helpful programs, tools and utilities with a short description. The visitor will get also information about system requirements (CPU, memory, OS, PPC, ...) and of course the link for the related homepage and email address of the author - every author can change and delete his entry via ID and password at any time.

The coding of the system will be finished next week, so from then on you can make entries into it.

We need the support of experienced users, who will offer up some of their freetime for administration and control of the latest entries. If you are interested, please send an email to us: asa@synotec-newmedia.de. (ps)

News from Thorsten Willert
First you can get a fix of his HTML preprocessor extension in the GoldED WebWorld menu, that you can use together with "CompressHTML".

Second he is looking for a new name for "CompressHTML", because the old name does not fit anymore with the new functions.

Third the following of his AREXX programs are now public domain:
  • Auto-Font-List
  • FWTabTools
  • FileInfo
  • GH_Browser
  • MakeSuffix

Because of lack of time Thorsten Willert can not develop them any further. If you want to continue the development of these projects, he will give you a helping hand to start.
Who wants to continue the AmigaOSGuide? It is an Amiga DOS manual, with dictionary. State: OS 3.1. If you are interested, send an email to Thorsten Willert. (ps)

Virus Help Denmark: xvs.library V33.25
The xvs.library (External Virus Support Library) has been updated today. Alex van Niel has decided to stop programming the xvs.package but will still update VirusChecker when he has the time. Alex got a new job that takes almost all his time. At this time I got very cold feet... Where would we find a new programmer that know something about viruses ? Or even worth, should we stop "Virus Help Denmark", without programmers to make antivirus programs, where would we be ??? And where would YOU BE ???????

So we went out looking for a new programmer to update the xvs.library. And with Georg Hoermann's approval we offered the code to a great guy, Jan Erik Olausen (The programmer of VirusExecutor), and he said YES :-)

PLEASE..... read the PS at the bottom of this email......

So, Jan has been rather busy in the last 4 weeks with adding new viruses and looking at the code for xvs. And now his first release is ready.

Here is some info about the release:

Name : xvs.library v33.25
Archive name : xvslibrary.lha
Archive size : 54.743 bytes
Release date : 10 June 2001
Programmer : Jan Erik Olausen
Email : virusexecutor@c2i.net

News for 33.25:
  • Added Zakahackandpatch File virus Thanks to Jan Andersen for the files.
  • Added Bobek! Link virus Thanks to Jan Andersen, Frank and Zeeball for the files.
  • Added Bastard Installer 1 Data virus, Bastard Installer 2 File virus, Bastard Link virus. Thanks Jan Andersen and Zeeball for the files. Thanks to Zeeball for the info on this virus and for the decrypt and memory removal routines.
  • Added 212 Bytes Link virus Thanks to Jan Andersen for the file.
  • Fixed bug in recognition code for DKG-Blum file virus. Thanks to Jan Andersen for reporting this.
  • Added Bobek2 Installer File virus Thanks to Fabrizio Bartoloni for telling me about this file.
The library has changed programmer, although Georg does keep all copyrights and remains owner of the sources, I (Jan Erik Olausen) will continue development. See the README file for my contact address.

Thanks to Georg Hörmann and Dirk Stoecker for helping me out with fixing bugs in the source. I couldn't have done this without there help :o)

Download shortcut.

STILL TO DO:
  • Add Bobek2 Link virus.
  • Add Neurotic Death 1 - 5. These five linkviruses are polymorphic, but crash on my system if I try to infect some test files. It seems that they haven't been spread to the public, I received them anonymously from the author. So it's not that BIG danger at the moment.
  • Try to get and add GlobVec linkvirus. The only one who has it is Heiner Schneegold (author of VT-Schutz) and VTC Hamburg, but Heiner doesn't give his permission to the VTC to send me the virus :(

Remember to join the Amiga antivirus maillist for free. Just send an empty email to: vht-dk-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

To leave the maillist, just send an empty email to: vht-dk-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com.

You can find this update at Virus Help Denmark & Virus Help Team Canada now, and on Aminet within the next 24 hours.....

PS: If you think that Jan Erik Olausen is doing one hell of a job, with keeping you Amiga secure for viruses, then send him a little donation. I know that xvs.library and VirusExecutor is freeware, but Jan has done one hell of a job in the last 6 month, to add new virus recog. in VirusExecutor and now with xvs.library. Send him 4 or 5 US-$, a postcard and even flowers, if you think he is doing a great job, and would like to keep the xvs.library alive...... (ps)

Virus Help Denmark: VHT-DK Bobek-2 Linkvirus found (update)
Supplement 13 June 2001
Accidently the wrong text for this news message was published. I replaced that with the correct text, now. I apologize for this bad mistake. mj

Here the proper message:

VHT-DK think to have found the installer of the link virus 'Bobek2'. The respective archive was on Aminet, but meantime has been removed. But there might be other infected archives, so be careful!

Known so far:

Archive name : Footro.lha
Archive size: 2.924 bytes
Archive info : Borntro from new A500 team Footro is looking for skilled A500 coders.
Installer name : 4k
Installer size : 2.784 bytes (stonecracker 4.04 packed)
Installer size : 3.316 bytes (unpackt)
Virusname : Bobek2 Linkvirus
Virus size : ca. 1036 bytes (uses polymorphic engine)

In the unpacked file you can read:
>------------------------------ CUT TEXT ------------------------------
xxxxxxxxxxx proudly presents BOBEK2 - The first binary virus for Amiga!
Credits - main coding by xxxxxxxx, polyengine by xxxxxx, installer-tool
and timer.device coding by xxxxxx! We are the best! Powered by Asm-One!
Enjoy! That is only preview of our metamorphic engine!
>------------------------------ CUT TEXT ------------------------------

Virus Help Denmark replaced the names with 'xxxx'. Thy don't want to promote virus programmers. "They should make use of there programming skills and make some useful programs", Jan Andersen wrote in his mail.

Since the file could not be started the people of VHT-DK tried an old A500 on which the virus was spread to other files.

At this time there is no cure for the virus 'Bobek2', but Jan Erik Olausen is working for a way to make a recognition for the 'Bobek2' linkvirus. (mj)

Since the new version of NListtree is to find in the YAM 2.3 archive, already, I would not like to let them take away from me the chance to make the definite last version before fall available as a complete archive.

Among other things two new Drag&Drop methods were implemented and a small bug in the Drag&Drop handling was fixed.

AMI Sector One Update
This time there is a big update on AMI Sector One. The up-to-now biggest legal and licensed Amiga game 'The Case of the Cautious Condor' (65 MB compressed) can be downloaded, now. This realtime adventure game was first released in 1991 for the Amiga CDTV. Wonderful drawn graphics and the glassy digi-sound make it a highlight. Not without cause it has been 'Game of the Year' in Japan.

Of course there are much more games like 'Blood 'n' Bullets', 'Slap 'n' Tickle', 'Bill', etc.

The two classics 'Genesis - The Third Day' (generating fractal landscapes), and 'Deluxe Music 2.0' (best? notation program for the Amiga) are legally available at the program area, now.

The Amiga group 'Wanted Team' now also has pages on AMI Sector One. For example there are Amiga players and new ripped sound modules. An update of the Coverscan section may not be missed.

Last but not least the 'Amiga Games Compendium' has been expanded with 1,100 new entries. (sd)
