Game: Graphic designers wanted for Ermentrud
The website of the game Ermentrud
has been updated . It now shows first images of the adventures as they
appear in the game. At the same time it becomes obvious that the game
is in the process of being developed since the Inga engine has finally reached
the beta version 1.0 (not yet published).
Ermentrud requires a lot of graphic design and some graphic designers are
still needed for the background images.
These images are supposed to be scanned pencil drawings which are coloured in
by the computer. The following skills are required:
- Being able to draw very well, according to the style of the
example image.
- Opportunity to scan (with good quality).
- Not necessary but desirable: being able to colour in images, according to the
style of the second
example image.
The payment is based on profit share after the game has been published.
Unfortunately Inutilis can't afford a pre-payment since the whole project
is more or less a spare time activity.
Please mail your applications including drawings to
Timo@inutilis.de.

Virus Help Denmark: WatchDog 2.5
On 25 January 2002 Zbigniew Trzcionkowski released with version 2.5 the
latest snapshot of his memory surveillance tool 'Watchdog'. In this
version further tests have been added amongst other things.
Compared to version 2.1 the following details have changed:
- added ToolType 'IgnoreSnoopDos' - currently this is the only patcher
I have decided to include since in future I want to use heuristics
to analyse ANY patches...
- added 'WatchDog' position in WB/Tools menu. After watching this
requester memory test is performed too...
- added new memory installation and new timing routines...
a. read: memory deprotection of WatchDog together with xvs should
be more difficult for virus now...
b. time between memory checks is adjusted using AI features and
varies somewhere between 5 and 10 seconds (depending on system
and user activity)...
c. fixed little bit my unfreezing toy...
- added few more vital Exec vectors to memcheck...
- added checker for some important dos vectors (with $4ef9 opcode
generic restorer)
- added some debug tooltypes - no need to mention them here...
- added S:startup-sequence and S:user-startup notification so that
any change (or deletion) of these important files is reported to the
user. If You don't know what that notification is You'd better
believe me that it slows no machine and causes no accesses to the
watched files...
- added ToolType 'NoNotify' to switch off ability mentioned above :)
The tool uses the xvs.library in order to check every three seconds
if the memory contains any known virus. All further features of the
program are explained in the documentation.
Watchdog runs from AmigaOS 2.04 and needs the xvs.library.

AROS: latest snapshots
With regard to AROS the latest snapshots of the sources and binaries
were published on
Sourceforge.
AROS is an open source project for the implementation of a portable OS which is
compatible with AmigaOS 3.1.
Release Name: 20020126
The following files are available:
- AROS-20020126-source.tar.gz
The main AROS sources.
- AROS-20020126-contrib-source.tar.gz
contrib sources.
- AROS-20020126-i386-linux.tar.gz
The hosted version for Linux/i386. This is the most complete and
mature port, which means that you can run almost all included
programs and demos with it. This archive contains all AROS and
contrib binaries compiled from the CVS tree.
- AROS-20020126-i386-freebsd.tar.gz
The hosted version for FreeBSD/i386. This is a fairly new port for
which binary snapshots haven't been available until now, so it might
not be as mature as the Linux/i386 port. For example, this archive
does not contain contrib binaries.
- AROS-20020126-i386-pc.tar.gz
The native version for i386-based PC AT computers and compatibles.
It works quite well, but the driver support is very limited at the
moment. This archive contains all AROS and contrib binaries compiled
from the CVS tree, but not boot floppy or cdrom images which are
available separately.
- AROS-20020126-i386-pc-floppies.tar.gz
The native version for i386-based PC AT computers and compatibles.
This archive contains the boot and contrib disk floppies which you
can quickly write to a disk and boot AROS with.
- AROS-20020126-i386-pc-cdrom.iso.gz
The native version for i386-based PC AT computers and compatibles.
This is the bootable CDROM ISO image, which contains all programs in
AROS-20020126-i386-pc.tar.gz.
The image is a bit experimental, which means that eg. the
Startup-Sequence hasn't been adapted properly yet
(although you can boot into AROS). Also, this version WILL NOT work
with computers that have more than one CD-ROM drive.

Incompatible Euro keymaps and fonts
For the attention of everybody who produces fonts and keymaps:
Because of the introduction of the Euro some people have unfortunately
got on the wrong track. The Amiga uses the Latin-8858-1 code table that
allocates the Euro sign to the ASCII code 164.
This allocation is binding. All the keymaps and texts which have
recently been checked in Aminet showed faults. Often the sign is allocated
to code 128 as it is common in the PC world. This might be based on the
assumption that a text transfer is easier in this way. Unfortunately
this is not the case because special signs specific to a country must
be converted anyway. Therefore it's up to the manufacturers of the
conversion programs to implement the Euro sign.
This false code leads to the unwanted effect that texts on other Amiga
systems cannot be read correctly and that the Amiga becomes
incompatible to itself. Besides such a text is not convertible automatically.
Moreover the key combination "Alt E" should be agreed on.
The symbol (@) is on the bottom right hand side of the keyboard
and it is activated by pressing the "Alt" key. If you have a Win keyboard,
which are the only Amiga keyboards with the Euro sign, the Euro sign is
also on the bottom right hand side of the keyboard. The combination
"Alt E" seems to be more logical than "Alt Shift E".
Creating texts with the Euro sign in both code positions is not
desirable due to the loss of a sign on the one hand and due to the
loss of transparency on the other hand since the user
will not know if the used sign is really compatible.
Here are some correct programs, texts and keymaps from Aminet:
EuroHack.lha: Patches the Euro sign in the topaz 8 font on 164!
EuroConv.lha: Converts the Euro sign from the PC on the Amiga.
According to the author the font set EuroFonts.lha has already been changed
to 164 although the wrong Euro is still implemented. The new archive with
approximately 900 Kb is supposed to be released over the next few days.
The small archive (300 Kb) isn't compatible.
Last but not least try the test which checks the compatibility of the
created Euro sign:
Open a shell and enter the following lines.
"EEEE" stands for one or more Euro signs.
Echo "EEEE" to t:Test
type t:test hex
As a result the value "A4" should appear for each of the Euro signs!
The value "0A" should be ignored.
0000: A4A4A4A4 0A
If another value other than "A4" comes up, the keymap is incompatible.

Graphic fractale: FlashMandelWOS Version 1.6
Version 1.6 of FlashMandelWOS has been uploaded on Aminet in
gfx/fract directory.
With FlashMandel you can explore fractal space and create your own pictures.
These are the main features:
Full functional program for rendering Mandelbrot & Julia fractals with different
exponents. Support for ECS/AGA/RTG and 68020+/PPC with an FPU Amiga or compatible
systems. Uses new Reaction GUI, Localization, and has an Installer script also to
easy update or uninstall the program. C & Asm 68k/PPC sources included!
It's really fast even on old Amigas and should be also compatible with all new
Amiga clones and it's free.
This has changed in the new version:
- Extended the Z = Z² + C formula to Z = Z^(2^n) + C with 1 <= n <= 11.
- Added the new ToolType POWER default to 1 for the classic Mandelbrot & Julia formulas.
- Fixed some little Reaction default pubscreen mistakes.
- Default coords are now (-2,+1.125i) and (+1,-1.125i).
- Splitted the archive into 2 parts one for pictures pix/fract/FlashMandelPic.lha and
other for program to reduce the size of the archive.
- Some minor internal changes and improvements.
- Recompiled and linked with new AmigaOS 3.9 developer archive includes and libs.
- Updated the docs and installer to reflect new changes.
- and much more...
In next version is planned an AREXX port to control the program in auto mode to
build anim movies and a special benchmark mode to evaluate the CPU/FPU/MEM speed
of 'OLD' real Amigas 68K/PPC VS 'NEW' software clones (UAE & company), stay tuned. (ps)

Amiga Inc.: Executive Update
Bill McEwen discusses the status of a new Set-top Box partner for the
Amiga DE.
Greetings one and all:
I have been receiving many e-mails reminding me of the need to announce the
STB OEM partner. We are well aware that it was scheduled for last week and
we were expecting the legal department of the partner to have released the
press release. Unfortunately, when you are dealing with multi-billion dollar companies, it can more often than not take longer than planned.
We did receive the OK to announce to our developers and this was accomplished last week. So all of the NDA developers do know about the deal and the details of the singed OEM deal, however we are going to have to wait a little while longer for the rest of the Amiga community to see the public release.
I am sorry, but it will be worth the wait. In fact we will probably have a
couple more that we can announce at the same time.
So the NDA developers were notified last week, and we should have the public announcement out by next week.

Financial software: Bugfix for Bonds V1.85
There is a first bugfix for Bonds v1.85 on the homepage (title link). It replaces
the old exe file with a new one.
Fixed:
- Umlauts now correct.
- Crash in the depot stock window, if stock = 0.
- Changing fonts caused crash.
- Some more little things.
Still not fixed is the problem with the object data list which may occur
if thre are two objects with the same first words (e.g. "SAP VZ" and "SAP ST").
Sven Dröge advices everybody who has MagicMenu installed
to enable NON-BLOCKING in its options. Otherwise it may come that the menu choice
could be overlooked.
Furthermore configuration files from elder versions of Bonds should not be used, since
in part internet regarding settings had to be adjusted. In any case settings should be
compared to the included configuration.
Bonds is a shareware financial software to maintain security papers of any kind.
But the main focus is on shares. This software was especially designed for the German
financial market place and handles best security papers dealt in Germany, since
it uses the numbering system for security papers of the German stock-market. (ps) (Translation: mj)

Hyperion: Presse Release Amiga OS 4.0 development update
Amiga OS 4.0 development update
Leuven, Belgium, January 21, 2002.
Let me start off by wishing everybody in the Amiga community all the
best in 2002!
As you know, on November 1, 2001 Hyperion Entertainment entered into
a license agreement with Amiga Inc. to produce Amiga OS 4.0 for PPC
based systems.
Since my presentation in Cologne at the Amiga 2001 show on November
17-18, very substantial progress was made which I am now ready to
share with you.
Some of you have expressed some misgivings about the lack of progress
reports on OS 4.0 development but I hope I can count on your
understanding as all of us have been extremely busy, even through
the holiday season, to bring you what is unquestionably the most
ambitious OS upgrade since Amiga OS 3.0.
Now I know that many of you are sceptical because of the scope of
the project and because similar promises were made in the past.
To those people I would like to point out that Hyperion Entertainment
does not enter into contracts lightly and that we have a track-record
carrying out commercial development and contract-work for Windows,
Mac, Linux, Amiga and Amiga DE/Elate.
We have brought together a truly impressive development team of some 25
people building on the OS 3.5 and 3.9 development team whilst adding
several well-known and respected Amiga developers to the mix.
I'm very pleased to say that Dave Haynie has agreed to serve as a
technical consultant.
You'll be hard-pressed to find a more experienced team for the job!
The feature-set of OS 4.0 has now been finalised to a large extent.
We can't guarantee that every single feature listed here will make it
in the initial release of OS 4.0 but this is the feature-set that we
have contractually committed to delivering.
You will also note that for the first time in many, many years very
substantial work is being done on Intuition, one of the core elements
of the Amiga OS. Having a PPC native version of Intuition available
will make a very noticeable difference speed-wise.
We intend for OS 4.0 to be disk-based or at least partly disk-based and
partly flashrom based even for current Amiga's. More about that in a
later update.
We also intend for OS 4.0 to be installed effortlessly from CD and
from scratch without the need for an existing OS install.
As we have taken on more work (Intuition etc.) and folded some of the
functionality originally planned for OS 4.2 into OS 4.0, this inevitably
means the original February release-date might slip somewhat but all in
all we believe that the end-result will be technologically more satisfying.
Come end of January, I hope to have the biggest chunk of the legal work
for OS 4.0 behind me which will allow me to provide you with more regular
updates.
I know full well that your patience has been sorely tested over the last
years so I understand your impatience and even your scepticism but I can
assure you that the Amiga OS is in good hands and that we will deliver.
In closing, I would like to invite everybody out there who (out of an
understandable frustration with the neglect of the Amiga OS by its
respective past owners) decided to take matters in his own hands, to
work with us, rather than against us.
Ben Hermans, LL.M
Managing partner Hyperion Entertainment VOF
Amiga OS 4.0 provisional feature list
Exec Second Generation (Exec SG)
Exec is the kernel of the AmigaOS and is currently written in 68K assembly.

The following features are planned:
- Hardware abstraction layer
- Virtual memory
- New library interface
- Resource tracking and management
- Optional memory protection
- WarpOS backwards compatibility
68K "Just in Time" emulation
PPC native TCP/IP stack
- implemented as a single shared library

- enhanced API for more control over the inner workings and configuration
- built-in DHCP client (e.g. for cable modems)
- Internet Superserver (inetd)
- IP filtering and networking address translation
- drivers for asynchronous PPP (dial-up networking) and PPP over Ethernet (for ADSL and cable modems)

file/directory name storage format which allows for long file names
(up to 108 characters).
Recovery and Salvage tools
Comprehensive suite of salvage and recovery tools including Salvage,
Undelete, Unformat, Repair, RDBSalv, ReOrg/Defrag, Check Integrity etc.
PPC native RTG system
The PPC native RTG system (based on Picasso 96 V3) allows for the use
of modern graphics cards on the Amiga.
Drivers for all current Zorro II/III cards as well as drivers for the
Permedia 2/3, Voodoo 3, Matrox G450/G550 and ATI Radeon are planned.
An arithmetically optimised PPC native version of layers.library is
also planned.
Warp3D
New version of Warp3D, the powerful yet low-level 3D API which is both
available on the classic Amiga and intent/Amiga DE and which allows
developers to rapidly migrate 3D content between both platforms.
Drivers for Permedia 2/3, Voodoo 3, Matrox G450/G550 and ATI Radeon are
planned.
OpenGL 1.3 support (Mesa 4.0)
OpenGL is a cross-platform (Mac, Linux, Windows, AmigaDE etc.) high-level
3D API originally developed by Silicon Graphics.
Support for OpenGL 1.3 will be provided by porting the open source project
Mesa (which now passes all SGI compliance tests) which will sit on top of
Warp3D so that graphics-card functionality not currently offered by the
OpenGL API may be supported nonetheless.
PPC native RTA system (AHI)
A Retargetable Audio System allows the use of plug-in sound cards
(PCI or Zorro II).
AHI by Martin Blom is currently the de facto standard on the Amiga and
a PPC native version will be offered with support for a wide variety of
sound cards including but not limited to all current Amiga sound cards and
the Soundblaster 128 and Live (EMU10K1) cards.
PPC native Intuition and Reaction
Reaction is the BOOPSI based GUI system for the Amiga, introduced in
OS 3.5 and extended in OS 3.9.
Moreover a new preferences system will allow the user to change more
aspects of the GUI.
Other features:
- Drag and Drop support
- New "ghosted" look
Intuition will sport the following new features (more planned):
- New DrawInfo pens
- Enhanced window borders
- Resolution-adaptive system gadgets
- User-selectable styles for system glyphs and 3D frames with support for external plug-ins
- Configurable look for proportional gadgets
- New-style (3D recessed) "disabled" look for gadgets where applicable
- Gad-Tools enhancements (pop-up capability for cycle gadgets etc.)
- Full-user control of Workbench palette
SCSI drivers for SCRIPTS based SCSI controllers
WarpInput API (working title)
WarpInput is an API for multimedia controller devices (akin to DirectInput
on Windows) which allows a programmer to provide support through one API
for a wide variety of input-devices such as keyboard, mouse, joysticks
(analog and digital), track-ball, Playstation controller etc.
Minimal USB stack
PPC native datatypes
New HDToolbox replacement
Support for TrueType/OpenType fonts

There is a new article about Apple at the BusinessWeek-homepage.
A subpage of this article is dealing with GUI and easier computers.
»Instead of starting out with hardware and software as
the first design step, I said what we are going to need if we
want to reach millions of people is to start with the question
of what do people do with a computer, and how do they do it.
What is the interface like? And then design the hardware and
software to support that. This is why the Macintosh was unlike
any commercial product that came before it. (Jef Raskin)« (ps) (Translation: sk)

Audio: WaveTracer DS now Freeware
Virtual Worlds Productions writes:
The WaveTracer DS, a substantial soundtool, that supports surround sound
and editing apart from a lot of known standard functions, is now
available as freeware. It can be downloaded free of charge from
http://www.VirtualWorlds.de/WT/downloads.html
All copyright references which refer to shareware or any commercial sale
are not valid any longer. The complete package can now be freely circulated
as long as the data files have not been modified.
VWP keeps the copyright. For further information about installation and
software check out
http://www.VirtualWorlds.de/WT/downloads.html
Amiga: We need your help!
We have reason to believe that the former distributor of WaveTracer DS
sold more units than he actually registered with us. In order to prove
this presumed miscalculation we need the help of all those who have bought
the WaveTracer DS in recent years.
Under http://www.VirtualWorlds.de/form.html
a form is available where you can fill in your data anonymously.
Alternatively, you can send an e-mail stating when you bought your
WaveTracer DS and at what price.
Virtual Worlds Productions would like to thank you for your efforts in
advance.
We also regret that the further development of the WaveTracer DS was
amongst other things also stopped due to a lack of interest. That
this assumtion turned out to be wrong has unfortunately become apparent
too late.

Game: Tales of Tamar - new Amiga version 0.40 R1 (Update)
Tales of Tamar is an internet turn-based strategy game for
Amiga, Atari, Java, Linux and PC by Eternity Entertainment Software.
For registered beta testers there's a new Amiga version 0.40 R1 available
for download.
With version 0.40, the Amiga version is the first version to implement ships.
There are trade and war ships in three different models each. Players with
towns by the sea can now trade overseas with a possibly existing fleet and
gain huge economic advantages. Weaker and smaller islands profit from overseas
trades since they can now finally buy goods which are not available in their
own country due to the lack of resources.
At the same time there is a new playing goal in Tamar! On the tracks of Magellan,
the players can now start to discover new continents, reconnoitre islands and
expand their kingdoms in near future. So far no player has sailed around the
entire world. Who'll be the first one and go down in the history of Tamar?
Update 24.01.2002:
Today was released version 0.40 R2 with many bugfixes.

New informationen about "ATI-Radeon" support for AmigaOS
On the AmigaOne mailing list Bill Toner, responsible for development of 2D/3D AmigaOS
drivers for ATI
Radeon graphics boards, voices upon miscellanous questions regarding
support for these boards. The most important spots:
Support for the following versions of the operating system
and computer configurations:
Bill Toner (and a partner not named) are responsible for driver
development; Picasso96 and Warp3D drivers. Those drivers are about to
be released for AmigaOS 3.x and AmigaOS 4.x.
In any case the Prometheus PCI board will be supported under OS 3.x, since
Bill owns such board. Mediator support is being planned, though Mediator 1200
boards will raise additional efforts. According to Bill, DCE did not respond to
his request regarding Radeon drivers about one year ago, therefore he cannot talk
about GRexx solutions, yet.
Radeon versions supported
First the original Radeon chipset will be supported (RV100), later on support
for the newer chipset RV200 will be added. Whichever the different versions
(32 or 64 MB video RAM, additional chips for special functions like TV in/out)
would differ from the developers point of view, it may come that not every
model will be supported, due to the developers team cannot purchase every
Radeon board. The PCI Radeon 32MB SDR, one AGP RV100, and one of the newer
boards with RV200 chipset are planned to be supported at all events. If the
"All-In-Wonder" (highend version with TV tuner, etc.) will be supported
(respectively all of its features) was not decided yet - even though they aim at
this. There will not be more detailed information about board models to be supported
before the developers will have an Amiga with AGP slot.
Distribution and prices
Apparently the drivers will be sold bundled with an ATI graphcis board, only.
Those are expected to work only with that board, they will come bundled with.
Bill expressly states, that one should not buy an ATI graphics board right now.
This step intends to decrease the number of piracy copied driver versions. As an
example Bill states the low number of registered P96 users among the customers of Elbox.
Further on this would help the Amiga developers to enhance their income a bit, since
they will not only earn by selling their software, but also can book the difference
from purchase price to selling price of the graphics board (which otherwise a PC vendor
would get).
According to a careful estimation by Bill the packet ATI graphics board plus Amiga driver
would cost 50 to 70 USD more than the respective board would cost at the PC vendor's -
he hopes that the additional charge will be only a few more than 50 USD if possible,
but cannot say anything in detail about that, yet.
The additonal charge contains:
- The costs of 2D and 3D drivers.
- Support, which also has to be done by the developers.
- A commercial Picasso96 license.
- Probably a commercial Warp3D license.
Release-Date
An initial driver release should not be expected along with the OS4.0 launch.
Bill cannot tell about detailed dates, yet.

CD32-Emulator for Windows: Akiko emulate MPEG Modul
The Windows cd32 emulator Akiko by Airsoft Softwair is
now able to emulate the mpeg module of the CD32. The speed is amazing as well as the
sound and video quality because all the cpu-intensive operations are done by the x86 cpu.
It was really hard work to implement this feature but the result is really overwhelming.
You can finally watch the mpeg intros which were just skipped for users without an
mpeg module (e.g. Cannon Fodder). And of course the cool Commodore commercial
with the mad scientist and his assistent. I quickly made some screenshots and uploaded
them to the Akiko product page.
I hope that the mpeg module emulation will be ready for the next version of Akiko
(of course only for the full version!). Another nice thing is that finally Microcosm works
with Akiko and you haven't lived if you did not see this game! The next version of Akiko
will be ready in near future and it will contain NV ram emulation and real Joypad emulation
for sure. So check back this homepage from time to time because the winter is anything
else than cold.... Finally I want to say "thank you" to the many registered users out there!
Your support makes Akiko better and better all the time!

First ScummVM-Version (for 68k processors & AGA) released
At the Aminet the first beta version of the Amiga port of LucasArts ScummVM system was released. This little program interpretes the data files of the old LucasArts Classic Adventures und makes them useable on the Amiga.
Now the PC versions of "Monkey Island 2", "Indiana Jones - And The Fate Of Atlantis", "Day Of The tentacle", and "Sam & Max - Hit The Road" can be played for the first time in 256 colours on an Amiga.
The ScummVM system runs under AGA and RTG. This first beta version does not support sound but this will be fixed in the next update. Requirements for ScummVM are an Amiga with 020 processor, a harddisk, the original PC games, BlazeWCP (for AGA only) and the Ixemul.library.

Chat with bplan at #AmigaFun
#AmigaFun: Realtime chat with Salvador Fernandez Gomez of bplan
On Monday, 21st January 2002, you can chat with Salvador Fernandez Gomez of bplan at the IRC Amiga channel #AmigaFun. He is known as one of the minds of bplan, well known with Pegasos. In the near future Pegasos will be released. You can ask him about bplan, Pegasos, and maybe some questions about MorphOS. The chat is organised with the help of Amiga Future.
You can reach the IRC channel #Amigafun this way:
IRC Server (without "irc."): rollingrock.altnet.org
IRC Port: 6667
IRC Kanal: #amigafun
If the server malfunctions you can get access via this server: amigafun.ma.cx (without "irc.")
TIP:
You can reach the chat also via the #AmigaFun Homepage,
Amiga Future Homepage and from the
Amiga-News.de Forum as HTML chat.
But we cannot guarantee that this HTML chat will function perfectly and programs like AMIRC and BlackIRC are more comfortable so we recommend to use an IRC client.

JPEG: exif.library 1.1, pfDirectoryView V13.1
On 13 January 2002 updates were published on the web sites of Steeple

The "exif.library" supports the selection of the EXIF-data of a

It was developed to gain useful information from image files as saved
by most digital cameras. Example programs and a single image with
EXID-data are included in the library.
In this version a bug in a language string has been fixed.
In the "pfDirectoryView V13.1" module for PhotoFolio 2.2 a bug has
been fixed in connection with loading locale catalogs.

Scalos: Updates for DefIcons, Persistent Windows und WB39-Plugins
On 13 January 2002 new versions of DefIcons, Persistend Windows
and WB39-Plugins for the Workbench alternative "Scalos" were
released.
DefIcons Plugin V45.6
This can be used as a replacement for the filetypes-plugin.
It can display a default icon for files without icon,
depending on the type of the file.
DefIcons requires AmigaOS V3.5+
Persistent Windows Plugin V39.16
This plugin records all the directory windows a user
opens and closes and keeps a record. Should a reboot
or a crash occur this data is used in order to open
the windows automatically so that the former condition
is restored.
Note: If you had previously the SnapDesktop beta installed,
it is necessary to delete the old files completely
before this new plugin is installed.
WB3.9 Plugin V45.21
This plugin is for AmigaOS 3.5/9 users only. It
provides Scalos with some missing functions that will
now allow some other software to work correctly, e.g.
AmiDock.
It also offers an integrated volumegauge for
AmigaOS 3.5+ users. It now loads in OS3.5+ volumegauge
preferences as set in the Workbench preferences.
There were also further system checks added so that this
plugin is now more stable.
Note: Users who use this plugin don't need the volumegauge.plugin.
If it was previously installed, it must me removed.

Amiga Arena: Interview with Gerd Frank (AmiATLAS)
Olaf Köbnik writes:
In November it finally happened. A new version of the travel planner
"AmiATLAS" was published for the first time since 1998. It was developed
by Andreas Regul and then Gerd Frank took over and developed it further.
Within a short period of time he created a piece of software of the
highest quality - AmiATLAS 6.
The Amiga Arena talked to Gerd Frank about the development and future of
AmiATLAS and about the question why some of the planned features were not
finished for the release.
Just a personal remark
I can only appeal to all of you. Whoever wants good software for the Amiga
will destroy its future by using pirate copies which are unfortunately
also available from AmiATLAS.
Many people don't seem to be aware of the fact that every registered
and sold unit counts!
Just now that we are about to have the chance to get an up-to-date software
it would be a shame to ruin ourselves and also the future of the platform
Amiga by using pirate copies.
I take this interview as an opportunity to once again draw attention to
this issue!

ProStationAudio: ALPS-Update and WinUAE-Benchmark
On 12 January 2002 an update of the plug-ins for 'ProStationAudio
Titanium' as well as early DSPSpeed benchmarking results for WinUAE-
JIT (0.8.17 R3) were released.
The ALPS update makes sure that the plug-ins APS-1 and APR-1
(Stereo Phase Rotator) are compatible with 'ProStationAudio
Titanium'.
The benchmark tool 'DSPSpeed' measures the performance of a computer system
with AmigaOS which runs 'ProStationAudio' in real time.
Here the reference system is AmigaOS/68 on a 68060 with 50MHz.
To this system the index value 100% was allocated.
The
result page
for this benchmark has now been extended with early results for
WinUAE-JIT (0.8.17 R3) on a Celeron Coppermine with 1000 MHz.
At this benchmark WinUAE runs at approximately half-speed than
Amithlon and still provides high acceleration for 'ProStationAudio'
compared to the reference system.

Graphic Adventure-Developer Kit: Inga-Engine Version 0.9/5
Timo Kloss writes:
Once again there is a version which is really almost totally finished!
Of course the Audio-CD-Support is still missing.
Compared to the last version the most outstanding difference is the
following: the plug-in system has been removed!!! What's all this about?
All the features offered by the plug-ins of late have now been
firmly integrated (sound-/ language and MED-music) and can be
activated by using normal script commands. Accordingly, Inga has been
prepared to be ported to other platforms. However, a complete compatibility of
all versions would be endangered by a plug-in system. Consequently,
it has been removed! Further information can be found in the compendium
under "LadeSound", "SpieleModule" etc. Besides the following improvements
have been made:
- You can now also talk to the characters even when you can't run to them
all the way (because of the run card). However, it's still not possible
to give them anything (that is to say "WennBenutzt" works but
"WennBenutzt-Mit" doesn't work!).
- The destination of the run towards the characters is now better calculated. So
far it has only been possible to run either on the left-hand or right-hand side
(only provisional).
- Small mistakes have been removed: If animated characters appeared for
example only from the left-hand side and if they bent forward,
it was impossible to find a suitable representation.
- Inga-pictogram information now enables the features "NOSOUND" and "NOPLAYER"
as a substitute for "DISABLE" at the plug-ins. You can find further
information in the game instructions.
- The speed of the characters can now be changed. (Consult the compendium
under "Laufschnelligkeit" (speed)).
InutilisGraphics Version 1.04
For this you can also find an update with two improvements:
- Even for small graphics a big screen now opens up so that it is
possible to control the characters from a point outside the graphic.
- 24-bit-pictures are now recognised and activate a warning message
while previously the program got stuck.

Spiegel: Kimble on the run
Kim Schmitz, known to the Amiga scene since his "Hacker times", understands it
perfectly to put himself in the limelight in one or another way. This time he
feels abandoned by the German authority of the state and mocked by the press.
He turns disappointed Germany his back with a good bye on

Spiegel: »Now he's gone. Up and away. Like Graf Zahl from the Sesame Street
with sensation, fireworks and much artificial fog. The most shimmering person of the New

People using a PC next to their amiga should read this (German) article of tecChannel.
According to it there's a new computer virus named 'Gigger' underway that can
have desastrous effects. The virus is written in Javascript and spreads via email

When the virus comes to work it deletes the contents of all files ending with
.asp, .htm and .html on your hard disk, all that resides is a file with 0 bytes.
Additionally the virus places the command to format the hard disk after a
restart of the computer in the start file "autoexec.bat".

Telepolis: Buried in New Mexiko
According to an investigation of the Telepolis editor Konrad Lischka
had the company Atari bought the computer producer Amiga. In the third last
paragraph it is written that: "After Tramiel had bought Atari the company
concentrated on the home computer market. To enter into the market for
respectable business clients Atari took over the Computer producer Amiga.
This is not correct.
1984: Amiga, then represented by the chief developer Jay Miner (formerly
chief developer of Atari) had in his financial need already got a private credit
from Jack Tramiel (who was the founder of Commodore Business Machines, but then
parted from the company because of differences, and afterwards bought the
clapped-out game console producer Atari). A takeover of Amiga through Atari had
already been negotiated. This takeover was avoided in the last moment through a better
offer by Commodore (remember: Tramiel had already left Commodore)
what led also to a repayment of Jack Tramiels private investment. The takeover
had cost 27 millions dollars. To be looked up in the
History of the
AMIGA.

Magazine: Retro Computing Today
Retro Computing Today - What is the big idea?
There seems to be a growing interest in computers and technology of
yesteryear. With very few publications actually acknowledging this, it
is left to a handful of small magazines to fill the gap, with
profitable publications such as Computer and Video Games dedicating
less than 4 pages to "The Old School". Retro Computing Today aims to
be the one of the first professional publication to cover all topics
regarding this very subject matter, instead of concentrating on one
particular computer or platform, as Commodore Scene does, Retro
Computing Today aims to cover as many topics as there are interests for.
For instance, those people who choose to use a Vic 20 to view web sites
through to the Amiga classic/AmigaOne platform.
Obviously, the more support a particular platform receives, the more of
the magazine will be dedicated to covering it, however, we would hope
to provide some sort of balance, unlike at least 90% of current
publications, whom tend to concentrate on the Windows/XBox platform.
Do you have big ideas yourself?
Details are sketchy at the minute, as the publication is still in early
planning stages. We can confirm the following:
- Launch issue for early May 2002.
- 8 copies a year (1 every 6 weeks). If there is enough demand, we will move
towards 10 copies a year (1 every 5 weeks).
- Website launched soon.
- A sample issue will be available to download.
- Special edition no. 1 will be available to pre-order soon.
So, if you would like to shape this publication, please email me with
your suggestions or comments.
If you would like to write any articles for the launch issue, please forward
them in .txt format, with the subject matter as Submissions 092246. We would
appreciate greatly any help we can get.
Thank you for reading,
Shaun/Retro Computing Today -

The Kickstart Archives V1.3
With permission of Alex Lupták, Gregory Donner and Ian Chapman you can now also browse through the newest versions of hardware reference Lex Site (ca. 80 MB), the Workbench Nostalgia and the Big Book of Amiga Hardware (ca. 90 MB) offline.
Changes:
- updated: Workbench Nostalgia of Gregory Donner (07/01/2002)
- updated: The Big Book of Amiga Hardware of Ian Chapman (27/12/2001)
- updated: Lex Site of Alex Lupták (21/11/2001)
- added: Haynie's Garage Sale!
- added: User Guides, Manuals, Service Manuals as PDF-files
- Commodore A590 Service Manual
- Commodore A1060 User's Guide
- Commodore A2088/2286 Manual
- updated: Search index for client offline search engine
Dave Haynie gave the permission using the pictures and texts of his eBay-offer "Haynie's Garage Sale!". These sites contain interesting background information of many products and prototypes of the Commodore's developing department.
Amiga, Inc. (Vince Pfeifer) and MacroSystem Digital Video AG (Ibrahim Tertemiz) gave the permission to publish manuals of their products as PDF-files on the CD. Manuals of XiPaint, Samplitude and MovieShop of MacroSystem are not included. The first manuals are included but more producers and manuals will follow.
The index of the search engine allows you search for headwords of all new sites which were added. For using it you must have a browser with full JavaScript support. This function offers none of the presently available Amiga browsers. Therefore you have to use different operating systems. Of course the link page works fine on each system. Unfortunately under Linux there are some restrictions because at the beginning the use of small/capital letters when creating files has been neglected.
You can look at all PDF-files on Amiga with the help of the current version of Apdf. THE KICKSTART ARCHIVES costs USD/EUR 10,- (without transport costs, Germany EUR 1,50, Europe EUR 3,- and worldwide USD 3,- normal and USD 5,- air mail). You have to pay USD/EUR 5,- (without transport costs) for updating your old version.

PhotoAlbum V6.6 und CyberShow V9.5a
Helmut Hoffmannrites:
After a longer break I have released new versions of my shareware programs "PhotoAlbum" and "CyberShow". The most important new features in both programs (PhotoAlbum 6.6 und CyberShow 9.5a) are functions to rotate pictures +/- 90° or 180°. For users of a Sony-CyberShot digital camera an automatical rotation detection is integrated.
Both programs are available in the Aminet (gfx/misc/photoalbum66.lha - gfx/board/cybershow95a.lha) and on my homepage (title link).
The shareware prices are adapted to EURO. For all internet users ordering online (order and delivery via email) a reduced price of EUR 20,- is valid. Ordering via mail and delivery on disks will cost you EUR 30,-.

H&P: Freespace: at last available
Haage&Partner wrote:
At last we get the official permission to ship 'Freespace'. The advance orders are allready shipped.
Freespace was proted by Hyperion Entertainment and is surely the best the space-battle-simulation that was ever available for the Amiga. It offers a unique mixture of phantastic graphics, complex plot and an outstanding gameplay.
Freespace can be used with every Amiga with PPC-CPU and 64MB RAM or Amigas with 68060 and a 3D-accelerator-board (like Voodoo3, Permedia 2).
Additional information is available at the titlelink. (ps) (Translation: sk)

Downloadmanager: Charon V1.98
Well, believe it or not, it's been released. Available from my
homepage or from Aminet in a couple of days.
Version 1.98 (6.1.2002)
- Introduced the concept of groups. Now each URL can belong to
a group and will take that group's settings as its default
settings. A new URL is by default placed in the group in
which the active entry indicator is currently found.
- Completely rewritten URL parsing routine which resulted in a
large speed up. This speed up would be even larger, but the
URL comparison routine was changed from simple string compare
to full-blown URL comparison routine which works properly.
- Rewritten detection of duplicates in the list. The code is now
much faster and works for any number of duplicates, unlike in
the last version.
- Charon now remembers the length of the file on server and
shows it all the time (if it is available).
- Many improvements and some fixes in the HTML parsing routine.
- Addressed some security issues.
- There's now a special treatment for %2F URL escape code (/)
because there are some filesystems that allow / in a filename.
- Added support for ftp://.../file;type=x URLs.
- When automatically creating filenames from the URL, %xx
sequences are now decoded.
- There's a new section in the documentation describing some
"hidden" features. Charon's tooltypes/arguments (LOG and
SETTINGS) are documented there.
- It is now possible to log all HTTP headers that were sent or
received through Charon for debugging purposes. More about
this in the advanced section of the manual.
- There's a new configuration option which tells Charon not to
read the size of the files on the disk during the startup thus
speeding it up. More about this in the advanced section of
the manual.
- DOS requesters are now blocked while the list of entries is
being loaded in order to prevent a bunch of the "Please
insert ..." requesters from a appearing if one of your drives
is dismounted.
- New gadget "Move & start" in HTML links and Internet search
windows.
- Changed the way Charon shortens the filenames when "Max
filename length" option comes into action.
- Changed the way the "Directory structure" option works. It now
also takes into consideration the name of the host.
- When a file is downloaded and Charon needs to check if there
are any queued files to be started, they are first searched
for in the same group in which the downloaded file was.
- Some changes in ARexx interface as a result of introduction
of groups.
- Updated some and removed some searches from Internet search
window. Ideas for possible additions are welcome.
- Fixed a bug in parsing dates in HTTP headers.
- Fixed a rare bug in display of percentage of the downloaded
file.
- Too long FTP paths would cause a crash while sending a
request. Fixed.
- Fixed a small memory leak during that occured only when Charon
was started from the shell.
- Charon would report that it couldn't resume a transfer when a
file had already been downloaded fully.
- SET Arexx command wasn't working properly for ages, fixed.

Individual Computers: Old links re-activated, VarIO online manual
While analyzing our webserver-statistics, we have seen that there
are a couple of hundred accesses to pages that have been renamed
with the re-launch of the site in May 2000. These accesses are now
re-directed to the corresponding URLs of the new site.
The online-manual of the VarIO interface board is now available in
two languages, and the last missing part of the hardware
documentation is available in the insider-section of the support
area.
Users of Microsoft Internet-Explorer (Version 5.0 and higher) that
bookmark our site will see a fragment of our company logo as an
icon next to the URL in the favourites list.
