Sound card: Delfina introduced successfully
The new soundcard Delfina by Individual Computers was introduced
successfully last weekend at
the AmiGBG show in Gothenburg, Sweden. Meanwhile, all important
European dealers have been supplied, so the anticipated delivery
date of April 7th can be kept without problems.
The module that is available now is ready to be used on nearly any Amiga.
The included 22-pin cable for the A1200 clockport can also be used
to connect to an X-Surf Ethernet card in a "bigbox" Amiga.
Probably the most important reason to buy this card is the DSP, the
digital signal processor. For example it allows playing back MP3
nearly without CPU load. MP3 is a popular audio format that is also
used by artists to put demos on the Internet. Free music samples and
full titles are available on sites like
Entertainment-Mafia.
With the Delfina, an Amiga can
playback MP3 even without an accelerator in the best possible quality.

Weekly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 3
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 3 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-17, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):
1) Derfs : is there an ETA on the t-shirts ? and if there isnt can you tell us anything about the delay?
Fleecy: We don't as yet have a delivery date for the Club Amiga T-shirts but we are working hard on sorting the situation out. I can't go into the reasons why we have had such issues but the delay is as irritating for Amiga as it is for those who are waiting for them. Resolution of this situation is pretty close to the top of our agenda.
2) BrianHoskins : Is there a time scale on planned multi-processor support for AOS4?
Fleecy: When moving Exec forwards into ExecSG, great care was taken to provide a foundation for a lot of features. These will be implemented as the need for them arises both from the development of the operating system itself and the requirements from third party developers.
That said, SMP support is planned for release in either 4.1 or 4.2; with the rider that plans can change. I would also caution against the desire for or claims made on behalf of Symmetric Multi-Processing or SMP. It has its uses but ultimately is limited, rather like sticking more and more engines onto a four wheel car. Proper parallel computing through a matrix of separate processor elements, all with their own schedulers and organisation models - authoritarian, pluralist, service, anarchic etc offers a much better long term solution and is far more in the mould of 'Amiga, doing it first'.
3) Jose: Will there be various versions of AmigaOS, one for the continuation of the Classic OS on PPC hardware like the users/supporters wish, and the other the so called server, etc. OS that OS5 is to be?
Fleecy: AmigaOS will develop a service based architecture which will allow users to construct the environment that they wish. If a person doesn't want 'server' targeted services then they don't need to use them. For example if you just want a simple filing system with no security, then that could be selected. If you want a secure filing system, you can select that service.
In this way it will be possible to produce targeted builds, a family product, a developer product, a business product etc built using Amiga technology. The core and more importantly, the framework will be the same.
4) jumpship: Is there likely to be a public demostration of an OS4 beta in the near future? I understand that not everyone (ie the whole community) would be able to attend, but maybe at a mayjor user group meeting, similar to WoA, and get someone to video tape it. That way it would be hard for people to say "I could make that in XYZ program.
Fleecy: Having a publicly demonstratable build of AmigaOS4.0 that runs on CSPPC and the AmigaOne occupies our every waking breath. We are well aware that once that is shown, the rumours and untruths will then have nowhere from which to grow.
However, the nature of the project is that all the pieces are now being integrated and being an integrated whole, the public demonstration will actually come pretty close to the end of the project, when most things are actually working together. To demonstrate just a piece of it would actually take time away from the project because we would have to unwrap many of the dependencies that would be inherent in a less than whole demonstration, as well as again opening us up to the charges of 'see, told you they had only done a bit of it'.
Believe me, when we can finally demonstrate the product, the world will hear our screams of joy. I am not even going to give a time though because it is an imprecise art to predict when it will be ready for demonstration. I'd rather just tell you when it is and that moment is not now.
I can tell you that one of the current test suites being run is the process of booting a standard 68k OS3.9 on ExecSG through the 68K emulation service. That is OS3.9 being run via emulation on a PPC processor. This is just part of the validation of the AmigaOS4.0 product. Supporting the CSPPC product has cost us time and effort though because, to say the least, it is an imperfect piece of hardware. The AmigaOne is a much cleaner product and if we had had only to support it then the situation might be different.
5) z5: What are you [Amiga Inc] contributing to OS4?
Fleecy: AmigaOS4.0 is the product that begins the transition from Amiga Generation 1 to Amiga Generation 2. It has several tasks, the most important of which are to move the entire platform to a new processor and to create an abstract hardware interface which allows us to far more easily adapt to other potential hardware markets.
This skillset requires a very detailed knowledge of both the existing 68k AmigaOS as well as the PPC processor family. This is one of the reasons why we contracted this work out to Hyperion, who themselves have pulled many of the brightest and best from the Amiga developer community into the project.
Amiga Inc itself has been concentrating on the future of the AmigaOS, in particular the Amiga Generation 2 (AG2) project. The next release of the Club Amiga Magazine (CAM) carries an article about this but as AmigaOS4.0 ships, more and more of this plan will be revealed.
The future of the Amiga platform isn't just a question of technology, it is a question of application as well. It is a business, and a business requires income which requires sales. Whilst we are comfortable with slowly developing the desktop market for the Amiga, to be able to fund it properly needs other markets.
Technology and busines have to work together to bring success and Amiga is concentrating on that at the moment, allowing Hyperion and the AmigaOS4.0 team to make that first step because they are the ones best equiped to make that first step.
6) AmigaGuy: I'd like to know if there are plans (maybe it already does) to have AmigaAnywhere available through web browsers. Something sort of in the way Java or Flash work. It might be cool to write an entire web site in C++
Fleecy: Amiga Anywhere currently runs as a player, on ROM and RAM cards, as standalone host transparent applications and as a run time engine. We have blue skyed the concept of providing a browser integration solution but given those already in that space, and the fact that the player will develop into an self sufficient Internet environment of its own, we are not pursuing that path.
7) Spacemonkey: Will Amiga Inc be porting Samba 2.7 or 3.0 for AOS 4.0 or will it be relying on 3rd party/End User to provide this functionality.
Fleecy: Olaf Barthel, one of the chief AmigaOS4.0 developers is also a key member of the Amiga Samba project. His opinion mirrors my own, that Samba is a monster and that it really doesn't fit into the Amiga model.
We are looking at including the Samba project as a contribution to AmigaOS4.0 but given the large list of requirements already clogging our desks, I do not see it as a priority.
Most people will be happy to be able to network with other computers running other platforms so that they can share file and resource access. Of course,if the requirement changes then we will look again at this area.
8) Blomberg: What are the plans for the OS4 audio system beyond the current state of AHI?
Fleecy: The Audio services provided by the Amiga will be one of the first that are developed in AG2. Indeed the core audio architecture for this has been fermenting and prototyping over the past year, arising from AmigaDE audio work.
Our commitment is simple. The AmigaOS will strive to have the best audio services of any operating system. We fully intend to push ourselves forwards as a viable and attractive alternative to any offering out there, both at the hobby level and in the professional world.
9) z5: why didn't the microsoft deal come through?
Fleecy: We have a strategic relationship with Microsoft, which means that they believe our technology enhances their PocketPC and Smartphone product line. Actual deals arise out of this relationship, both directly with Microsoft and via them pushing us towards their partners who also use PocketPC and Smartphone. For example, at the CTIA show held in New Orleans last week, they provided a number of Gamecards as freebies to their partner Samsung who were launching a new PocketPC Phone Edition product. This has led to direct contact with Samsung following a successful reception, and also a number of other contacts with Samsung competitors who also expressed an interest in the Gamecard content and product.
As far as an actual deal goes, Microsoft have been selling rebadged Gamecards (2 of them at the moment) in select CompUSA stores for the past two weeks. We have not announced this both because they are not currently selling them on their website (CompUSA that is) and also because of the difficulty of synchronising a web press release with Microsoft.
We have been criticised in the past for such practices and we are trying to ensure that any press release is independently verifiable.
Microsoft are very pleased with this initial batch of Gamecards and want to move to bigger volumes, and increase the number of Gamecards (2 are in the initial launch, we have 2 more ready to go and can make another 3 quite quickly) by the summer. These were supposed to have debuted in November but technical difficulties with both the card sourcing and then with issues in PocketPC, discovered and reported by Amiga led to a 3-4 month delay.
Indeed, the first appearance of Amiga product in a mainstream computing channel has also witnessed our old friend, piracy, returning to the platform. Dean Brown, our hardware guru found three of the Gamecard packs in the Bellevue CompUSA and someone had cut one open with a scalpel and stolen the Gamecard!
10) Hooligan: How does AInc plan to ensure steady development of software?
Fleecy: Developers create software either because there is money in it for them or because they simply enjoy creating for a platform and community. Whilst we are looking at seeding some core application development, the proper solution is to create a market that is commercially viable.
This means enough users to buy enough of the product to make the cost of development of that product worthwhile. Our efforts are thus focused on increasing the size of that market, through successful launch and post launch activities in the sales and marketing domains, and in reducing the cost of development for the platform, primarily through ensuring that development can proceed as rapidly and trouble free as possible; in other words a developer toolchain, documentation and lots of support.

Mexikon: Cactus lexicon in HTML format
Under the title link you can find a.o.t. 'Mexikon', a lexicon on cactuses with
many tips and suggestions. It also contains maps of Mexico and photos of more
than 650 cactuses.
Since end of November 2002 version 3.1 of Mexikon has been available, and as we haven't covered it yet, we are herewith gladly catching up on this. Egon Münch
has completely revised the cactus lexicon, fixed various errors and added new
descriptions and photos.
Furthermore MEXIKON doesn't use AmigaGuide anymore, but has become more platform
independent by now supporting the HTML format, so every user can utilise the
lexicon with an Internet browser.
The only thing that hasn't changed is the fact that MEXIKON is and will stay
freeware.

Amiga Arena: BabeAnoid 2.0 final version
In the past reported the Amiga Arena several times about "BabeAnoid", the Breakout clone by Richard Fhager.
The released demo version 1.10 seemed to be the one and only version for a long time as Richard Fhager
lost his interest in continued development because of a lack of feedback respectively he wants to cease all his Amiga activities.
In cooperation with Wolfgang Hosemann (issue #9/02), at that time responsible for the games part of the AmigaAktuell, a call was started to continue the game's development and to activate the users to give the developer feedback for his work. This all didn't seem to bring the wanted success. The more I am pleased to announce today's release of the version 2.0 final.
Further informationen you can find here.
Support developers, then developers will support you!
Download: babeanoid.lha - 3 MB
Features are among others more than 30 different boni, six different balls, different bricks (moving, multi hit, invisible...), foes plus weapons for fighting against them, two teleporters, background pictures, smoking balls, music and sound effects, speech output, buying and selling items and much more.
The game uses 32 colors (ECS) and needs at least an Amiga with 68020 and 2MB Fast RAM. If the settings in the preferences are reduced should the game also run with 1MB Chip RAM.

Golem: New youth protection law: no more Linux games in the future?
»USK logo becomes a problem
From the 1st of April on could the offer of games software for Linux users
in Germany be reduced in a drastic way from one day to the other. Because from this day on may only games be sold if they are marked with an age recommendation of the
USK and this is only the case for a small minority of Linux games.«
Read the full (German) article under the title link.
In the Amiga sector will the situation not be very different. Games that are new released won't get around the mark but because of financial reasons it is to be expected that only a little number of already released games will get this recommendation symbol. So we are very interested in the consequences of the new youth protection law for the Amiga market and of course for the games developers. Tell us your measures.
Will old games be removed from the shelves?
Will old games get an age recommendation?
What costs does this signing cause?

Ben Fuller is dead - biography in the work
Benjamin G. Fuller, active Amiga developer since the early days, died on September, 11th 2002. The family, relatives and friends are putting a biography about Ben together and would welcome any contributions from the Amiga community.
1986 was the AAUG (Arizona Amiga Users Group) founded by Ben and some other users. Aged 17, Ben was probably one of the first and youngest developer of commercial Amiga software and visited among other things the 2nd Annual Amiga Developer's Conference in November 1986.
1988 he had worked in California at Silent Software and contributed to the creation of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" that had been distributed by Buena Vista Software and Disney. In 1992 he returned to Arizona to develop at Softwood, Inc. for example Final Copy II.
The next station was SunRize Industries, the makers of the hardware-software solution AD516/Studio16 Digital Audio Workstation. there he developed among other things the Automated Mixer of AD516/Studio16 v3.0 and its enhanced SMPTE Handling and the Amiga side including ARexx API of the software SoundSwitch that was also made compatible to the Video Toaster.
In June 2001 Fuller retired from SONICblue (ReplayTV) where he had worked since 1998 and concentrated on the photography with his Olympus E-10. His photos can be viewed on his website under the title link. Until the end Ben had used the Amiga emulator Amiga Forever running on a Dell-PC.
Please send contributions like publications, photos, reviews or comments that could help to complete the biography to ggfuller@yahoo.com or to benfuller@exreplaytv.com.

- Bug fix in the requestor of the liege lords

on a ship
- Grain silos accept only a deposit of 500
- New card elements are built-in
- Figures on the water are now terminated, if they haven't been shipped
- ToT is independent of the animations again
ToT is the first game in the world to administer wideranging structures of liege lords,
vassals, and henchmen. Through these game options it is possible for the player to close
vassal treaties with other players and thereby to ascend through the hierarchy of titles.
There are 8 different titles in Tamar: Baron, Viscount, Count, Marquis, Duke, Archduke,
King, & Emperor. For each presently occurring coronation, one will see a little animation
of course.
Titles in Tamar are not just purely a status symbol, because here good players are
rewarded with free rounds each month! If one is able to progress into the highest ranks,
ToT makes it possible to play an almost costless game.
As to reports of piracy, the only thing we have to say is that we have added this because
the inquiries of players and testers. Pirates should now offer better game options.
Dragons have been observed! (Quote from the ToT forum).
The dragons are a very old breed of winged beings of immense size. They make their homes
in remote places. On Tamar there are different types of dragons, which are generally
differentiated by skin color and behavior. One thing they all have in common: they are
hatched, devour meat, use breath as a weapon, love gold and jewels and are very strong.
Many dragons live for hundreds or even thousands of years. Because of this long history
they are inclined to look down their noses at the younger types of beings - such as humans.
On Tamar there are different types of dragons. Some of them may even be called by the
races of Elves and Dwarf, when they find themselves in danger.
But the most powerful dragon is the gold one. His breath is of a fire and gas mixture
capable of incinerating entire cities. Thankfully he is not particularly aggressive and
is even honorable of disposition.
On the opposite angle is the red dragon. This absolutely chaotically evil dragon has
nothing else in mind but to annihilate all creatures in a fiery death. He is not quite
as strong as the gold, but his aggressiveness knows no limits. He sinks ships, leaves
cities in soot and ashes, and attacks great armies if it must be. We want to warn all
the players in the world about this dragon! Dragons typically run in small packs of one
to four.
Lastly, we wish to call your attention to the 'Offer of Tamar.' Amiga Future
publishes a page every two months with news, tips, tricks, and statistics about
the best players of Tamar at that time. We're especially happy about this cooperation. (ps) (Translation: dm)

The author of the game AMHuhn Telemar Rosenberger has recompiled the current versions of AMHuhn and AMHuhnXE for the processors 68040 and 68060.
Telemar's debugger does not show any errors now it should run bugfree and clean now and he hopes that the game runs better now on some systems.
The new versions of AMHuhn and AmHuhnXE are included in the download archives in a German and English version. Please read the notes.
Download: AMHuhn.lha - 315 KB
Important notes:
1. The new compiled executables were tested under the precondition that the current beta version 4.5 of AHI is installed (we reported).

Speech control for Amiga in planning
Carsten Siegner writes:
From today on I will work on a speech control for the Amiga.
A speech control modul of "Conrad-Electronic" will be used for that. This one can control 65 different
channels which are addressable by freely programmable speech commands.
There are different speech recognition modes:
There is a single word recognition and a multiple word recognition. That modul might distinguish between
"Arteffect start" and "Arteffect end" if ran in multilpe word recognition mode. The aim is a speech controlled toolbar or a speech controlled Internet browser which might open a special page on a shout. Probably an ARexx or even a speech controlled computer start or shutdown script might be possible.
I could imagine that the Amiga itself might give some feedback, probably with an audio feedback. That might be of the kind that after a spoken command the computer comes to word and gives a confirmation of the received command. The computer voice could be any sample.
Ideas and suggestions are welcome.

Interest on the print magazine 'Total Amiga'?
Fun Time World and Amiga Arena are discussing together with Robert
Williams the possibility to sell the English print magazine "Total
Amiga" in Germany. Before they like to know if there is a demand for that magazine. The retail price would be about 4.50 EUR + porto and package (about 1,50 EUR) per issue.
People interested on a subscription might please send an email to us.
For a positive decision there is a demand of 50 interested requested.
Further details are to obtain by email from us. With a subscription people are ment who will buy the magazine regulary i.e. they have to pay not in advance but issue per issue. Only on request there might be subscriptions for a fixed number of issues available.
The current issue is about 52 pages, 44 of these are without adds. An index of that issue is to obtain from here.
To get an impression of the quality you might have a view to a pdf version of the magazine. Following this link you will come to
issue 12.
The magazine is mostly done on Amiga and published every quarter year, a monthly rhythm is planed as soon as the Amiga market improves again.
The magazine is printed in black and white. Further information is to get from our
homepages: Fun Time World
or Amiga Arena during the next days.

Music: Access Virus MIDI commands for tracks&fields 0.4
Kicko writes:
First i appologise for sending this info in the german part of
amiga-news.de. The problem is when using long dir/filenames t&f
wouldnt show the commands in commandslist. To solve this i have
renamed the VirusPageA-C dirs to VirusA-C. Then in t&f in config
window use an assign like V: to tf:commands and it will work.
But remember that you have to reload every commandn in list to use
the V: assign instead. There is other solutions too like renaming
the command names too. Many of them are numbered like
000.bankchange.cmd. You can rename it like bankchange.cmd. And
also you can copy the commands you like from the virus drawers to
the actually tf:commands and use them from there. Its upto you.
Im not good in assembler so i cant fix it. Maybe someone can do
it for me? (ps)

USB driver: Poseidon version 2.0 available
Chris Hodges writes:
I've just uploaded the current work in progress version of Poseidon.
Although the version number has been bumped to V2.0, it contains mostly bug
fixes. Please don't be disappointed, if you would have expected more from
this release. I've had a lot of things to do (e.g. writing the driver for
the cool Algor board and the FlashRom tool for the Romulus/Algor) and then
again, I'm only coding on my spare time.
Nevertheless, this is a free update for all registered and licenced users
except for one. This "Rat" has to stick to the old version. Support is
something bilateral.
People who had problems with their digital cameras using the CB or CBI
transport protocol (remember, Class 8, Subclass x, Protocol 0 or 1) could
try again with the new mass storage class. It might work. I've spent some
days with the USB Floppy drive I've borrowed from a friend of mine and
works with it.
Also, AutoMounting has been improved, so the manual mounting process
required by a few devices/media should be worries of the past.
As usually, there are new binaries for MorphOS as well (and if somebody
missed the news, the Pegasos USB driver by VFD has been released into the
public a week ago). Anyway, stay tuned, there is more to come. Enjoy the
update.

Music: Access Virus MIDI commands for tracks&fields 0.4
This is really no update to the actually commands but a description
how to solve the problem with using these commands in tracks&fields.
The problem is when using long dir/filenames t&f wouldnt show the
commands in commandslist. To solve this i have renamed the VirusPageA-C
dirs to VirusA-C. Then in t&f in config window use an assign like V:
to tf:commands and it will work. But remember that you have to reload
every commandn in list to use the V: assign instead. There is other
solutions too like renaming the command names too. Many of them are
numbered like 000.bankchange.cmd. You can rename it like bankchange.cmd.
And also you can copy the commands you like from the virus drawers to
the actually tf:commands and use them from there. Its upto you.
Im not good in assembler so i cant fix it. Maybe someone can do it for me? (ps) (Translation: sk)

Weekly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 2
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 2 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-17, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):
1) BrianHoskins: I know it's a little soon to start drudging up time scales for a more commercialised OS, given that AOS4 isn't quite out yet, but when do you think the Amiga Platform is going to be in a position to release a new OS aimed at the wider audience? Im not talking about exact dates here, just approximately. A Year? 2? 3? More?
Fleecy: As I said in an answer to last week's questions, it is very important that we have a good market profile before we release a product into that market. By that I mean having a comprehensive list of the activities, requirements and roles within that market and, as important, a list of what our competitors offer and plan to offer.
This covers not just the operating system itself but also the hardware, the application base and the pre and post sales and support infrastructure.
You only tend to get one chance to launch into a market and so you have to make sure that you have all the bases covered otherwise it may fail, negative association may follow and this could affect not just any potential relaunch into that market but activities in other markets as well, both existing and planned.
By a wider audience, I assume you mean into the general desktop/home computer market. Based upon that, we need to attend to the following areas.
- reliable supply of good quality and competitive hardware
- a stable, localised, well documented and supported operating system
- a supply of good third party applications, both available and in progress
- an effective marketing campaign - reviews, advertisements, presence.
That said, to appeal to a wider audience, we need to provide a solution to their needs. The majority of people use a computer to
- surf the net
- email
- Instant Message
- compose letters
- manage their music collection
- play a few simple games
- manage their digital photograph and video collections
We thus need to make sure that we have a solution that provides for these seven basic activities, to at least an industry standard level. This means applications, either in house or third party and an operating system which supports those applications.
This itself will be influenced by the move from Amiga Generation 1 (AG1) to Amiga Generation 2 (AG2) technology. For example there is little point in expending lots of effort on a brand new HTML rendering engine or a new printer system until the AG2 graphics service is completed, since both of these will make heavy use of it.
As you say, prediction is not an exact science but assuming full access to the necessary resources I would say that 18 months after AmigaOS4.0 ships, we should have all the elements necessary to offer a compelling alternative in the wider market.
2) seldom: Is there some kind of estimation, when there will be a Java VM for AOS ? Obviously this would open up a whole bunch of apps and developers for AOS. Maybe there is some way to do something special (tight integration into OS, boosting GUI implementation) about this implementation, so it gets especially attractive to develop/use java-apps. for/on AOS ?
Fleecy: Personal Java and MIDP will be available once the AmigaDE runs on the AmigaOS. Once that is the case, we will then look at expanding it into a full java implementation. Such a project would be a lot of work though and would most likely not be resourced until deep into the AG2 project, both because AG2 is more important and because Java itself would be a customer of AG2.
3) DaveyD: Have you considered porting an open source browser such as mozilla to AOS and if so, will it be included with AOS?
Fleecy: We have been looking on with interest at the path followed by Apple with Safari, their new browser and will most likely follow a similar path. We need to consider this though against the wider picture of what goes in an OS and what is/should be provided by third parties
4) SlimJim: Will there be an official list of supported hardware for the AOne + AOS4 combo released before the launch of the actual OS? I know this has been asked before, but it would be nice for people with Earlybird systems to be able to start putting together the hardware (with Linux) now, safely knowing that the addons they buy will also be supported by the upcoming AOS4.
Fleecy: This already exists, built and maintained by those who already have AmigaOnes, and supported by Amiga, Eyetech, Hyperion and Mai. You can find it at
http://web.amigarulez.com/ahs/
The new Amiga Power Platform website is currently under development and will be launched in the near future and will provide lists of hardware, software and links to reviews.
5) Rebel: Why has Amiga Inc not involved its community more? There are many talented graphics artists, webmasters, programmers that could be called upon to help. Also surveys on features etc that users want the most. AI's refusal to engage the users has helped to fragment that community further.
Fleecy: The issue with using the community comes down to the essential delineation between a business and its market. If a company takes work from external sources then there are legal questions of ownership and moral questions of remuneration. As an example, many games companies used to welcome idea submissions from the game playing community as a way of generating new product concepts but a few years ago, a few of them were sued by people who had made submissions and who claimed that their ideas had been used without reward. It is thus necessary to ensure that any flow into a company is legally secure.
Having said that, we do work with the community in several ways.
- We often use Amiga artists for graphics work. The new OS4 advert is a good example.
- We are working with several webmasters and artists for the new Amiga Power Platform website.
- The development team of AmigaOS4.0 consists of many of the best community based developers.
- We consult with a group of trusted community figures on issues, ideas and concepts.
- The Club Amiga Monthly eMag and the soon to be released DEv DE developer eMag receive extensive contributions from the community.
Of course there is always room for more and as AmigaOS4.0 moves towards release, we will be extending our efforts in that regard. There is a lot of contact and communication with the community but a lot of it goes on behind the scenes.
6) alx: What tools will be available to develop for OS4?
Fleecy: The OS4 team and in particular Olaf Barthel have put in a lot of work to create a GCC compatible compiler which is free of iexmul and older compiler dependencies. We are looking at developing a proper IDE around this to give Amiga developers a world class development environment, and integrating this with a new documentation toolchain. A developer CD will be forthcoming. This is of course subject to change as we move forwards.
Now that we have an eMag pipeline, proven with CAM, we are soon to introduce the DEv eMag for AmigaDE developers and we want to produce a similar product for AmigaOS developers.
7) alx: Do you know when the new SciTech graphics drivers will be integrated into the OS (ie as a Boing Bag, or in OS4.2 or whatever)?
Fleecy: The plan is to release it as part of AmigaOS4.0. It most likely won't be part of the CSPPC version but then that hardware doesn't have the luxury of many graphics cards.
8) Unclecurio: There was much talk of the Zico spec in the early days. Is Amiga Inc continuing the development of these blueprints and, if so, when can we expect to hear more?
Fleecy: The Zico spec was an indication of the type of functionality that we intended to provide with AmigaOS4.0. Our future plans for the AmigaOS will introduce new types of hardware across a range of device classes but we won't be releasing details until individual projects are much more advanced.
9) Kay: Have you given any thought to communication between Amiga desktops and AmigaDE capable PDAs? If so, what devices can we expect to be using together with our AmigaOne systems in the near future?
Fleecy: This is something that we intend to provide once the AmigaDE is on the AmigaOS. However, there are also opportunities for other device synchronisation as well - PocketPC and Palm PDAs, MS and Symbian powered smartphones and of course the digital music devices.
10) The_Editor: "The Matrox are supposed to be an A.Inc Partner... Have / are negotiations taken place to port/create NLE Editing solutions for A1?"
Fleecy: Our partnership with Matrox is currently limited to providing drivers for their product path. There have been initial contacts about their video application offerings and we have agreed to talk in more detail once we can provide them with AmigaOS4.0 on an AmigaOne for them to assess.
We have been contacted in the last week by a company which has expressed an interest in bringing video capture, editing and presentation software to AmigaOS4.0 but I cannot give any more details at this early stage.

Felix Schwarz: Sale of old AMIGA hardware
In order to create room for new hardware, Felix Schwarz privately sells AMIGA
hardware items which are no longer required. Among those there are AMIGA computers
as well as digitizers, interface cards and non-AMIGA hardware. Especially
interesting for some might be the Amiga 4000 on which the main part of the
development of fxPAINT, fxSCAN and VHI Studio had taken place (in the meantime
moved to an A4000T).
As this is private hardware there is no guarantee - the sale is NOT through
IOSPIRIT but is purely of a private nature.
This has no influence on the further development of the software titles by
IOSPIRIT - even after the sale there are still three AMIGAs and compatible
computers remaining. Have fun bidding!

FTPMount version 1.4 by Rudolph Riedel

As the Aminet unfortunately seems to be down, at least uploads aren't sorted anymore, I have uploaded right now a new version of FTPMount to my homepage.

A download link isn't available on the site but it should be direct accessable. Well, what has changed?
This can of course be read in the "FTPMount.readme".
The archive is very similar to the v1.31 by Martin R. Elsner on the Aminet, I had unpacked it and done my changes. The main thing is that I've done a new compile, made some changes, set the version to 1.4, added a 68040 version and the complete source code is now also included.

Amiga Arena: Interview with Steffen Schiller (Fahrschule 99)
A few days ago was the once low cost program "Fahrschule 99"
released for free download by its developer Steffen Schiller.
Other than the name is suggesting it's not an old program but "Fahrschule 99" offers to all those who are doing their theoretical driving licence or who just want to update their knowledge the up-to-date data for the classes B and A.
Here it shows once again that the Amiga sector offers actual applications that are not only for free but also cover topics that are suitable for the daily use. the only drop of bitterness for todays Amiga users will be the fact that "Fahrschule 99" is made for an Amiga 500 and PAL screen mode.
As especially this kind of normal use software is so important for the future of the new Amiga generation to cover a wide area of themes spoke Olaf Köbnik to Steffen Schiller about the future of "Fahrschule 99".
The result is the 100th interview Olaf Köbnik (Amiga Arena) has done who already told us that the 101st interview with another interesting and actual company is in the works.

Cinemaware statement
As reported in the end of February here told clickBOOM in their S-File 22 that there are differences with Cinemaware. Today Cinemaware published the following statement:
Statement from Cinemaware
Hopefully you know who we are as Cinemaware, as we are well known for
our past Amiga games. We are of course doing new titles as well as you
can see on our web-site www.cinemaware.com.
We have also started a series of "Digitally Remastered" titles with
clickBoom for a while - but unfortunately that has gone badly. I was
wondering if you could report the information below on your website.
We understand that some of classic Amiga/Cinemaware fans have been
concerned about certain news spread around by clickBoom, the Canadian
developer which Cinemaware has employed to develop the "Digitally
Remastered" series of games. At this point Cinemaware would just like to
make a simple statement that clickBoom's allegations are false and
misleading, and that we will issue an official statement in the future
regarding this matter.
In reference to this, Cinemaware would appreciate if anyone involved in
the below cases come into contact with us as soon as possible, writing
to cinemaware@cinemaware.com:
As you can see history tends to repeat itself.
In the meantime, we appreciate your support and understand your
frustration at not being able to see more "Digital Remasters" coming out
soon. We are working hard to resolve this situation.
Please look out for exciting news regarding Robin Hood: Defender of the
Crown soon!
Sincerely,
Lars Fuhrken-Batista

Individual Computers: AmiGBG in Gothenburg, Delfina in production
On March 29th, the Amiga-show AmiGBG
will take place. The event takes place for the third time this year,
and we'll attend for the first time as an exhibitor. We will present
new and known products from our palette together with our long-term
partner GGS-Data. The Scandinavian
Amiga-community is very active and most notably creative, therefore
we're especially looking forward to this event!
With a little luck, we'll have our latest product in our luggage: After
an extremely long wait, the sound card Delfina went into production.
Nearly one year ago, we announced the last technical changes, that
are already outdated today. The most important change is probably the
split of the product into two boards. The updated product description
on our website confirms what many people already assumed since the
Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper is out: The new Delfina is a combined
Zorro/PCI card. The first stage of this high-end sound card will be
available in Germany starting April 7th, 2003. Pre-orders are taken
by our retail partners.

Genesi: CeBIT report 2003
Genesi: CeBIT-Report 2003
From Ron van Herk und Martin Heine
The CeBIT is over, eight days of hard work are behind us. Genesi´s
first CeBIT attendance has been very successful. We were able to have many interesting talks,
we had a lot of interested visitors and started some very promising business deals.
We cannot got into detail of every single topic and of course there are some (indeed not too few) things which we cannot talk about in public.
But some things we can say right now:
_Kato Development_
Kato has developed sound card drivers for more then ten different audio chip sets. These include the AC97 codec, several Creative sound cards, but also some different Terratec models. We are to assist Kato in any possible kind to port their drivers to the Pegasos/MorphOS system, so Pegasos users will have a broad choice af additional sound cards.
_Mediapoint_
We hired the main programmer of Mediapoint. He started, done as a fulltime job, already to finish the next version of this package. It´s aimes to do a first release still this summer.
Our main focus is the professional market but also current users of the stand alone version will be an upgrade offered to benefit from the new features as well. Futhermore the same programmer will create a
MorphOS version of Inga the graphic adventure creator. With this it becomes possible for developers to create such graphic adventures or edutainment software for our settop box.
_Russia_
Genesi´s Russian distributor visited us at the fair. Currently the Russian localization of
MorphOS is under development.
_Merchandise_
Genesi thinks about the production of several MorphOS mechandise goodies and to offer it via local dealers.
We have some ideas for that ourself by now but welcome every suggestion for that as well.
_3sat_
As most will have heard and some have seen already there has been a short report about the Pegasos/MorphOS within the TV show "neues" of 3sat. Even it has not been to extensive it has been quite nice and we got some several positive feedback about it.
Okay, that´s all for the moment - more news will follow when we can put them to public. Our best greetings and regards from the CeBIT we are leaving from here now!

Article: The new generation of CDR/CDRW writers
With the start of the CeBIT the new generation of the 5x-times IDE
CDR/CDRW writer has been introduced to the market. Along with the higher writing speeds for CDRs and CDRWs all writers include technologies to avoid buffer underruns by standard now and are capable of the mount rainier standard, which should replace floppy disks as data carrier medium.
_Mitsumi_
The current top edge is the Mitsumi CR 485F TE (54x 32x 54x speed) drive. The best features of this ultraspeed rewriter include the integrated MITSUMI Aegis write
technology for best writing results. Aegis write controls and optimizes the laser strength, checks the writing speed and performs during the writing process a quality check for a safe burn. Availability: from April. Price: about 99 Euro.
_Plextor_
The new Plexwriter Premium (52x 32x 52x speed) works with an improved optical unit which offers a better signal sharpness between the pits and lands, so capacity of mediums can be increased up to 40%. So a 700 MB disk is capable of up to 1 GB. For a better compatibility Plextor says to extend the disk capacity only about 20%. To reduce the drive sounds the speed of the drive can be downgraded by the user individually.
Availability: from April. Price: about 199 Euro.
_LG Electronics_
For all who think about to get a new CDRW as well as a DVD-ROM LG presents the new combo drive GCC-4520B
(16x + 52x 24x 52x). Beside all common CD/CDRW formats the drive can read DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW media. The maximum read speed for these media is 16x which is about 21 MB/s. Availability: from April. Price: not published yet.
_Cyberdrive_
With the CW099D (52x 24x 52x) Cyberdrive offers a high sped writer now. The device works in the CAV mode and thus needs
less than 2.5 minutes for a complete CD-R and
for a CD-RW only about 3.5 minutes. The device can handle the raw DAO mode with 96 subchannel bytes and thus offers backup copies of protected CDs. Extra long CDRs with 90 or 99 minutes are supported also. Availability: from now on. Price: about
99 Euros.

Font: TTEngine 6.4
TTEngine 6.4 is a bugfix release for three bugs unfortunately introduced in the previous one. The main bug was requesting mathieeesingtrans.library V38 while Workbench 3.0 and 3.1 has V37 of this library. This caused library initialization failure and revealed two bugs related to cleanup routine. Cleanup generated several Enforcer hits if called after failed initialization. All three bugs are fixed in TTEngine 6.4 release. Thanks to Halvadjian Georges, who reported the bug and hepled with debugging.

Diego Casorran Ports: HyperMail V2.1.7 and Flac V1.1.0
- HyperMail to version 2.1.7, it is a program that takes a file of
mail messages in UNIX mailbox format and generates a set of
cross-referenced HTML documents. Each file that is created represents
a separate message in the mail archive and contains links to other
articles, so that the entire archive can be browsed in a number of
ways by following links. (I remember you that YAM export his emails
in UNIX format ;)
- Flac to version 1.1.0, it stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec.
Grossly oversimplified, FLAC is similar to MP3, but lossless. The
FLAC project consists of: the stream format, reference encoders and
decoders in library form, flac: a command-line program to encode and
decode FLAC files, metaflac: a command-line metadata editor for FLAC
files. "Free" means that the specification of the stream format is
fully open to the public to be used for any purpose (the FLAC project
reserves the right to set the FLAC specification and certify
compliance), and that neither the FLAC format nor any of the
implemented encoding/decoding methods are covered by any known patent.
It also means that all the source code is available under open-source
licenses.

- Fixed transperancy of icons in roster window (thanks to Jeff Gilpin)
- Fixed long standing enforcer hit when removing contacts (also thanks to Jeff

- Fixed reply quoting (introduced in 1.4pre1)

- Some support for displaying errors in the roster (but I haven't actually had
any errors that trigger it, so it either doesn't work, or I haven't
had any errors.
- Fixed enforcer hit on startup when autoconnect is on and there is no account
information (introduced in 1.3)
- Roster icon remains on the event icon until all unread messages have been read
- Fixed handling of messages from contacts that are not in the roster
(introduced in 1.4pre1)

A.D.A.: Seven new demos online
A.D.A., the 'Amiga Demo Archive' has undergone an extensive update and offers
the following new demos:
- Dream or Reality/Faculty and Nah Kolor. Famous slideshow from Faculty
and Nah Kolor, featuring pictures by Unreal. Mostly fantasy inspired
(dragons), this slideshow features some nice pictures.
- Noname/Polka Brothers. Released at the South Sealand party in 1994
(ranking unknown). This is pure Polka Brothers style, meaning fast effects
and lots of energy. Some nice fullscreen pictures and a stunning tune by
Slide (as usual). A bit too short. Recommended!
- Nonstop/DCS. "Dcs brings you the first 40kb sing-along karaoke intro
ever featuring le ball du metaux, head objects, possibility to sing along,
effects, secret breakdance mode, oldschool atmosphere and no greetings part".
Need i say more? Released at The Party 1999 (1st place).
- Sketch/Venture. Technically not really impressive, this demo features
some amazing design, making it a very stylish little production. Released
in August 1998 at Intel Outside 5 (3rd place).
- Sumolysbryter/Ephidrena. Yes, the famous crew from Norway is back with a
new demo! Featuring Loaderror, Cheetah and Zixaq, this demo was released at
Kindergarden 2003 where it achieved first place. Very stylish design backed
up by a nice elektro tune. High quality, as can be expected from the masters
of design. More please!
- Alien 2/Scoopex. Released at The Party 1998 where it ranked 1st at the
demo competition. A 3D story demo with 2D effects in between. Cool music from
Muffler and Virgill. Recommended if you are interested in 3D story demos.
- Brain Overdrive/Software Failure. It's always easy to search for
credits from Software Failure intros: Code: Ham, Gfx: Ham, Music: Ham, 3D:
Ham (talk about multitalented). Originally released at Euskal 10 in July
2002, Ham released the final version some weeks ago. And a very fine intro
it is!

Programmer wanted for project 'Fli4l on Amiga'
Oliver 'Bladerunner' Hummel writes:
Maybe some of you know the software router package fli4l (see title link). With
this software and a 486 it is possible, to create a fairly comfortable Linux
based hardware router.
The whole thing works quite good, and also the collaboration with the Amiga
works out excellently. The only downer so far: In order to create the required
boot diskette, up to now a Windows/Linux PC is still needed.
Now I have looked a bit closer into the DOS batch file and realised that only
two little programs are needed which as yet haven't been available on the Amiga.
One is mkfli4l, a progam which checks the config files of fli4l and generates
the file structure for the required Tar file, and Syslinux, a boot loader, which
can also be used from DOS and writes a boot block onto a diskette.
The program mkfli4l wasn't overly complicated, in any case I have succeeded in
porting the program after some time of trial and error (actually it was a simple
recompile with gcc). I have also adapted the script so it is in theory able to
create a boot diskette. In practice, however, the program Syslinux is missing!
Thus now my question: Is it at all possible to use this program on the Amiga (of
course one still would have to install an MS-DOS compatible file system on the
Amiga) and if so, is there somebody out there who would port it?
The whole thing doesn't seem to be especially extensive, only somebody would
have to do it ;-) Btw, Syslinux can be found here:
http://syslinux.zytor.com/.
If this whetted somebody's appetite, please contact me via
e-Mail.

IG Metall: Do you earn what you deserve?
»Many people who hold their salary cheques in their hands ask this question themselves. In spring 2000 has the IG Metall (a German union) for the first time publicly presented a survey over the salaries in the IT industry and updated it on a yearly basis. This payment analysis has proven to be a big hit. Now there's a new - of course updated -

AmigaWorld: Weekly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 1
As announced by the English Internet magazine AmigaWorld, the magazine will ask Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc., ten questions per week (Update 2012-03-17, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):
1) Rebel: "Why SO silent? AInc has been quiet for months at a time, giving the naysayers, and rumour mongers a chance to do more damage, and divide the community even more.".
Fleecy: As my mother used to, and still does say to me 'Don't say anything unless you have something to say.' Keith Blakemore Noble pointed out on ANN that this is what we said we would do when we bought the company in 2000 and then we went back on this pledge. The problem we have, although it is a good problem is that the Amiga has a community and the community wants to know what is going on, more so given the nightmare of the last eight years.
Our initial policy was thus to say nothing until we had news to share. With all the requests we then got for news, it became very difficult for us to keep to our policy. We thus resurrected the Executive Updates but in these we made the mistake of sharing status and progress information and as anyone in business knows, business is a distillation process - 100 leads may lead to 20 contacts which lead to 5 contracts which may, if you are lucky lead to 1 deal.
Even more unfortunate, the deals we were able to announce, the Sharp Zaurus, the Nokia MediaTerminal, the Sendo Z100 were pulled out from under us - the Zaurus for Sharp internal reasons, the MediaTerminal because of the collapse of ITV digital and another Germany company and the Sendo situation is well understood (although there is still hope there of a new deal based upon the unique advantages of the AmigaDE).
So, in terms of news items we haven't done too well.
To add to this (and many will shout and scream about this but it is true), Amiga Inc has been under attack from several groups who have other axes to grind, whether they want an x86 solution, AmigaOS open sourced, protection code and licencing removed from AmigaOS4.0 or want to encourage people to move to another platform whilst claiming it is an Amiga. Of course in a community there is disagreement but in a community that disagreement is either tolerated or the community splits apart. Everything we were saying in public was being taken apart and turned to support whatever was the position of the poster.
In the end, we decided to revert back to our original policy since it became apparent that all anyone really cared about was the release of AmigaOS4.0. This then brought us full circle to the original situation, that when saying nothing, noisemakers will rush to fill the silence. If you don't counteract the rumours then its because they are true and if you do pop up to counteract them then that must be because they are true. The only way to win is to get AmigaOS4.0 out the door and so that is what we are concentrating on at the moment.
Part of the reason for this Q&A service is to rubbish the claim that we won't talk to the community. We just won't say anything if it isn't 110% guaranteed anymore and that is the way people seem to want it.
2) SlimJim: "It is well known that this first release of AOS4 is mainly aimed for the existing user-base and eventual old Amigans. What is Amiga Inc's (overall) marketing strategy with respect to AmigaOS4 + Aone (once they become available)?".
Fleecy:
1. Move the community to new hardware and operating system.
2. Develop audio and 2d/3d productivity architectures with Amiga and non Amiga developers
3. Create applications to take advantage of these architectures to carve out solution markets
4. Support development of applications that round the appeal of the platform - browser, email client, word processor
5. Integrate with the AmigaDE to open access to multiple platform markets, both open and solution based
6. As we build the application base to where it can successfully provide for different roles, we will then push it out into those markets.
In short, there is no point in pushing the Amiga into a market where it is not yet ready to provide an adequate solution or it will die before it takes its first step. To do that we need the hardware, the operating system, the application base and the support services in place.
3) Herewegoagain: "Will they [Amiga Inc.] be negotiating with Microsoft to bring Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and Media Player to OS4?".
Fleecy: It is something we have considered but again, as with all the other application developers out there on other platforms, until we can plonk a machine and operating system in front of them, there is little point. The perennial problem, of course is that these companies are busy with their main activities and seeing their product ported to another platform, particularly one as small as the Amiga is not something that they wish to consider. In the end, they will only 'get out of bed' if there is a large market or we provide them with financial incentive.
4) alx: "Assuming everything goes to plan, at what point in the future will Amiga start to advertise the A1/OS (not just to Amigans)?".
Fleecy: I refer you back to question 2 - we will market and advertise when the full solution is ready for those markets. This doesn't mean that there won't be penetration. We have many journalists ready to review and write about the machines. Amiga is a big story to them because the Amiga was such a large part of people's lives in the past. We will have services in place to take advantage of and capture that interest, to make use of it when the conditions are right.
5) reflect: "Maybe I've missed this when I read the featurelist, but I couldn't see ARexx there. Will ARexx still be included, and if so, will it have gotten an overhaul internally or will it 'just' be ported or will it be emulated?"
Fleecy: The ownership issues surround the original ARexx implementation are well known and we have been unable to gain access to the source. The existing 68k ARexx binary will thus be emulated. We are reviewing the entire scripting and application control for both AmigaDE and AmigaOS4 as mentioned later on.
6) unclecurio: "What are AInc doing to attract past developers to produce updated versions of their software? For example, Photogenics has ceased development for AmigaOS but would be a great product to bring back in an updated version.".
Fleecy: We are working in the background but I don't want to go into too much detail as it has become apparent that competitors are approaching the same people and trying to tie them into exclusive deals that would keep their products from AmigaOS4.0. Providing them with a list of who we are approaching, both within the Amiga community and on other platforms would really be doing their work for them. Suffice it to say that we are being as open as we can with all the developers that we have been able to locate still developing for the AmigaOS and with one or two exceptions, they are very receptive to what we have been able to tell them.
7) Eric_Z: "Is A.inc. currently involved in porting over office apps to AACE or OS4?".
Fleecy: For Amiga Anywhere, we are encouraging development of the applications that our customers are telling us they want, and this is almost always games. However, we do have customers who have requested education and productivity software and we have one of the best calculators ever created on a software platform and a digital picture application that is impressing lots of people. In the end, we encourage and work on whatever is being asked for.
8) mood: "Will there be any Amiga-Anywhere/AmigaDE-player for AmigaOS 4.x?".
Fleecy: We have already stated that we are targeting an AACE player for AmigaOS4.2
9) DaveW: "Is SHEEP the scripting language that looked rather cool available or going to be available this year for Amiga based programmers to get their hands on?".
Fleecy: We are currently reviewing SHEEP in the context of the AmigaDE and AmigaOS4 and looking at how it can be used to bring the two together as both are moved forwards and towards each other.
10) Pig: "Where do you see the company in 5 years, and where do you see AmigaOS at that time?".
Fleecy: I hope that we are on many different types of device and providing a seamless digital enviroment for users irrespective of their hardware. We have a marketing slogan we use, the new WWW, which means Whatever, Wherever, Whenever.

CeBIT 2003: promised screenshots arrived
As Martin Heine promised in his last report
he has now real screenshots of Ambient, the settings (Prefs), Win95 and Word made available. You can find these screenshots following the title link.
Martin Heine, right now at the Genesi booth at the CeBIT 2003:
"Besides, I measured the time Win95 and Word needed here on our G3/600. I have to note that I don't know whether this setup here of the CeBIT computers can be optimized any further or not as I myself don't have any experiences with Bochs yet. Nevertheless I stopped the following times:
Initialisation until the first text output (what's displayed after switching on a PC: BIOS, units, "Windows is being loaded"): 45 seconds.
Launching Windows until it is loaded: 1 minute 20.
Launching Word until it is ready to use: 20 seconds."

TV-card driver: AmithlonTV beta version 315
Guido Mersmann has yesterday released the beta version 315 of the TV-card driver software AmithlonTV with several smaller updates and improvements.
Download: AmithlonTVBeta.lha
Changes in this version:
- BUGFIX: Fixed TVCardSetup and TVCard.library code part that
may have caused the random freezing on MorphOS.
- CHANGED: Many small optimisations.
- ADDED: Added two debug options. If AmithlonTV is still freezing, try
"SETENV TVCard_NoInterrupt 1". If this isn't helping try
"SETENV TVCard_NoDMA 1". Delete the variable to regain normal
operation. Please report any result. MorphOS support depends on it.

CeBIT 2003: Report and photos from Ron van Herk
A short summary of some of the things happening here at CeBIT from Ron van Herk
1. We have nearly finalized our agreement with our new Russian Distributor.
MorphOS will have a Russian localisation and will become successful in
Russia. Genesi's André Siegel will work as an 'interface' between the new
distributor and the developers that need to get this done. Russian
programmers interested in assisting this process can receive a fully
configured Pegasos in exchange for their work. In the bigger picture, once
the Russian localisation is done we will have a model to do the same in
other languages and localisations.
2. 3Sat visited Genesi today and shot footage of the Pegasos, the Psylent,
MorphOS, etc. We showed MorphOS working with several apps, games and the
Internet which they all filmed. The editor, Ralph Benz is a long-time Amiga
user and is very enthusiastic! We gave him a bunch of T-Shirts to give to
viewers (or to keep for themselves). Not a bad deal for free TV coverage I'd
say ;-)
Enclosed are two pics, 1 high-res foto of the desktop case and one of me and
Robert Han of Plexuscom with the Psylent.
That's all for now.
Sincerely,
Ron
