Simple DirectMedia Layer v1.2.6 released
Gabriele Greco released an Amiga port of the Simple DirectMedia Layer version 1.2.6. The release contains the following:
  • GCC 68k static library.
  • GCC morphos static library.
  • SAS/C static library
  • The 68k SHARED SDL.library, works with any language or compiler able to parse an .fd file.
  • A few SDL examples with a GCC Makefile to build them.
  • Inlines, pragmas and .fd files for the 68k shared library.
  • Includes and HTML docs from the original SDL archive.
  • All the examples are compiled for the shared version of SDL to save space and bring users and developers to choose the shared library solution but they all works (at least on my system) also with the static one.

SDL makes it possible to run applications and games, for example soccer game 'Eat the Whistle', on different operating systems such as AmigaOS, Windows, MacOS or Linux. (nba) (Translation: sk)

Amiga Arena: History report 2000
The year 2000 was to become the hitherto most active year for Amiga Arena. Beside numerous special price campaigns and interviews, the "Amiga Arena - Homepage CD-ROM" was published for the first time and presented at the show in Neuss.

Moreover the German version of the game "Blade" was published for the first time and a raffle with goodies from Amiga Inc. made possible. What else happened - read it yourself in the third instalment of the Amiga Arena History! (nba) (Translation: cb)

Software news: amigift v1.0
Version 1.0 of amigift, an AmigaOS 3.x port of giFT, has been released on the Sourceforge page under the title link. The project is supervised by Diego Casorran.

Program description: giFT is a modular daemon capable of abstracting the communication between the end user and specific filesharing protocols (peer-to-peer or otherwise). The giFT project differs from many other similar projects in that it is a distribution of a standalone platform-independent daemon, a library for client/frontend development, and our own homegrown network, OpenFT. Status Report from the BeOS Front
[note from translator: this is a very long article from Matthias Breiter about various good news related to BeOS. Rather than translating the whole darn thing, I will loosely cover certain points and provide link information]

BeOS, currently enjoying a small rise, runs on X86 PCs and on many old Macintosh computers.

There are two new news sources for BeOS information:

Technoids: http://www.technoids.tk
Beyond: http://beyond.itbug.org/eng/

You may also see what the future holds for BeOS by going to a current site of much development:

YellowTab: http://www.yellowtab.com. There is a lot of software there and they are also looking for developers.

There are also some BeOS events coming up:

What-Is-Art (Mannheim): http://www.what-is-art.de
Begeistert (Duesseldorf): http://www.begeistert.org

So be sure to check out BeOS! (nba) (Translation: dm)

AmigaWorld (ANF)

Fortnightly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - round 18
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 18 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-15, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):

1) Asemoon: A poll here at AmigaWorld shows that most people seem to prefer to have "A" keys for their "Amiga" keys on their keyboards. Are there any plans to create such alternative keycaps to stick on Logitech or other keyboards? (like Computer City's Boingball keycaps for their general PC keyboards?)

Fleecy: No. This is a third party opportunity. We do have companies and vendors coming to us to create such officially licenced products but there are no details to release as of yet.

2) Crumb: Do you plan to integrate a X-Windows system with the new 4.1 desktop to allow developers to port easily apps? I mean something like Apple does with OS-X... I think it's called rootless server, it wouldn't harm the platform, but would help a lot to bring us new apps.

Fleecy: It is something we are considering but as with most graphics issues, they will not be implemented unless there is a very good reason until we have implemented the new Amiga Generation 2 (AG2) visual services set. This is slated for AmigaOS4.1.

3) Crumb: When will we have an IDE like a basic Delphi/visual/C Builder? Creating GUIs for our apps takes too much time. I have to say that I like Reaction, but some official C++ classes would be welcome.

Fleecy: Having a proper IDE and more importantly a GUI builder is high up on our list. As with the above though, we really want to get the AG2 visual services done first, then we can implement the new interactive environment, which will have a visual object system and a designer/builder for it. We may do a reaction based tool in the meantime but it isn't something high up our agenda at the present time.

4) Crumb: Will you add more examples to the autodocs? The information is quite good but an example of each function would be wellcome, at least one example of each library showing the most important functions.

Fleecy: The entire documentation and help system will get an overhaul, making use of the AmigaOS4.1 html/xml rendering services to provide a fully integrated solution for users and developers. The AmigaOS4.0 documentation will then be updated to support this. I should say that at this moment in time, all the new and rewritten elements of AmigaOS4.0 are getting updated documentation. One way to ensure you have a say is to sign on as a beta tester and let the developers know what you want in those docs as they are developed. Ultimately, a full time documentation resource will be assigned, attached to Developer Support, thus taking the chore away from the developers themselves.

5) utri007: Will there be tcp/ip printing?

Fleecy: Support for TCP/IP printing via the LPR protocol was included with the 3.9 update. Since this is a bare-bones protocol, it proved more to be much more troublesome than helpful (it basically has no error reporting capabilities, which makes it next to impossible to figure out what went wrong if something went wrong). This needs more work.

Since printing is integrally bound up with the visual services, the foundation for pDP (Digital->Physical) emission of content, with the emission/output device being anything from a TV to a monitor to a projector to a printer to potentially anything else capable of manifesting a physical visual image is being built into the AG2 visual services. Once this is done then it will be relatively simple to make it network aware.

6) Asemoon: Within what timeframe do you expect the Amiga platform to move towards 64-bit technology?

Fleecy: For the general AmigaOS4.n path, we need to enhance functionality, specifically through the AG2 programme and, for the moment that will concentrate on 32 bit technology but, as resources permit, we will create a transitionary version that can run on a 64 bit processor, albeit in 32 bit mode. In parallel, a separate project that is building the foundation for AmigaOS5.n will create a solution equally at home on both. I can't give a timeframe per se, just the steps towards it. It won't be in the next year though but as there is little advantage to it over 32 bit in the near and even medium term then it is not a high priority. It is what your computer can do that counts, not the size of its buses.

7) Asemoon: Can you tell us how you got introduced to Amiga computers and how you got involved in the Amiga community prior to Amiga Inc and Gateway?

Fleecy: I was just a user who worked on corporate systems during the day and on my Amiga 1200 at night. My first Amiga moment was walking past a Curry's in Crewe and seeing an amazing FMV of a space pilot getting into a fighter and launcing out from the belly of a giant star destroyer - a demo running on a CDTV. It blew me away. Then my wife's little brother got an A600 and we used to spend all day playing Captain Planet, Bart Simpson and a few others - Walker, Cool Spot etc. I had to wait a year or so more before I could afford my own A1200.

When first Commdore and then Escom went bankrupt, many users and developers got together online to try to work out what we could do. There were several attempts, some still on going. I was part of the ICOA (Industry Council Open Amiga) which formed just before Gateway bought Amiga. We sent off a proposal to Gateway on how we could help them and how Amiga could be developed and amazingly, they phoned us back and invited a few of us out there - Dean Brown, Andy Finkel, Alain Penders, Jesse McClusky and myself. We meet Jeff Schindler and the rest, as they say, is history.

8) alx: When do you see yourself showing AmigaOS/AmigaONE at a major mainstream computing show?

Fleecy: We intend to show at a major mainstream show early in the new year, hopefully after we have launched AmigaOS4.0 to the Amiga community.

9) reflect: Since many users now have been using Debian and its excellent package system, I was wondering if there are any plans to incorporate a framework for packages in AOS?

Fleecy: Yes. A content management service is being considered that provides similar services to both third parties and for the operating system itself.

10) Eric_Z: Considering the recent release of the OpenGl 1.5 and to a lesser extent the 2.0 specifications/suggestions, I'm wondering if AOS4s WARP-3D NOVA will use these new specifications. Or if the implementation of these are planned for future releases and if so which?

Fleecy: The OpenGL 2.0 specifications are all but finalized, and it will still take some time for the specifications to be adopted. OS 4 will have its own OpenGL support via Mesa, in whatever incarnation that is available at the time of release, and will see continous updates.

As far as I know (cannot verify since www.opengl.org seems to be down) at this point in time not even 1.5 is official, and 1.4 is still the most current version (1.5 being a draft). It's imminent, though.

Nova is something different. This is currently just an API specification/outline that has nothing to do with OpenGL 1.5 or 2.0 in the first place, except that we might opt to use their (OpenGL 2.0's) shader language specification. The idea behind NOVA is its independence from any committee or ARB that, by definition, has difficulties adapting itself to the speed at which graphics card hardware evolves, a fact that becomes quite apparent with recent OpenGL history where Vertex/Pixel shading is still an option supported through extensions. The trouble with these extensions is that they are sometimes burdened by licence or IP issues (NV_vertex_program being a prominent example) that makes it impossible to implement them in a general framework.

Amiga Inc.: Legal Settlement Not Reached with Genesi
In an official statement on the website of Amiga Inc. CEO Bill McEwen has taken a position on the recent speculation about a port of AmigaDE to the Pegasos and the legal battle between Genesi and Amiga Inc.

According to McEwen the legal proceedings between Amiga Inc. and Genesi S.à.r.l. have not been ended, in contrast to other claims. According to his current stance, the proceedings go forward and Amiga Inc. has not lost the case. A port of AmigaDE for the Pegasos is not planned. The information spread by Genesi is supposedly false and misleading. According to the end user licence, Amiga OS may only be used on machines certified by Amiga Inc. AmigaWorld (ANF)

Fortnightly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 17
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 17 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-15, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):

1) alx: You have mentioned that OS5 should include "Orthogonal Persistence". I roughly understand that this means that you don't need to explicitly "save" a file, but can you give us a rough idea of what it is, how it would appear to the user, and how it would impact AmigaOS in particular?

Fleecy: First of all, here is a decent definition of Orthogonal Persistence (OP) which I googled.

"In geometry, orthogonal means "involving right angles" (from Greek ortho, meaning right, and gon meaning angled). The term has been extended to general use, meaning the characteristic of being independent (relative to something else). It also can mean: non-redundant, non-overlapping, or irrelevant. In computer terminology, something - such as a programming language or a data object - is orthogonal if it can be used without consideration as to how its use will affect something else. In itself, a programming language is orthogonal if its features can be used without thinking about how that usage will affect other features. Pascal is sometimes considered to be an orthogonal language, while C++ is considered to be a non-orthogonal language.

Features of a program that is compatible with its own earlier versions - this is called backward compatible - have an orthogonal relationship with the features of the earlier version, because they are mutually independent; you don't have to worry about how the use of one version's features will cause an unintended effect because of an interaction with those of the other version. Both the features and the programs can be said to be mutually orthogonal.

The length of time data is kept in storage in a computer system is known as its persistence. Orthogonal persistence is the quality of a programming system that allows a programmer to treat data similarly without regard to the length of time the data is kept in storage. Data is stored for varying lengths of time; some is stored very briefly and some is stored relatively permanently. Frequently, a programmer must use different approaches and separate coding to access data depending on whether it is stored for a long time or a short time. Using a programming system with orthogonal data persistence allows the programmer to treat data the same way regardless of its persistence characteristic, saving programming time and making it easier to enforce referential integrity (a type of constraint applied to ensure correct data validity)."

To a user, as you say, the biggest difference is that there is no distinction between objects being used at a specific time and those that are stored on a disk and which have to be loaded and saved. An object just 'is' and you access it directly using just one method. This affects the whole model of data usage, whether for a user or for a developer. You just access the object and it is there.

For AG2, this will mean that the user doesn't consider the individual data object 'as is', but will make use of semantic organisation - embedding the object itself into multiple relationships which can use any sort of paradigm, from explicit sets (a set in which the user puts an object because they want it there) to implicit sets (the set of all png files, for example). Such a system can simply build a hierarchical container relationship, which would manifest itself as the existing file system model, but to only use it for this would be a profound waste.

It sounds very different but it is actually a far more natural activity that the system existing computers use, which is very closely tied to hardware restrictions. In fact you are already using a similar system almost everyday - the Internet. An HTML page is a container for all sorts of data objects and you click on them to access them. It is a limited and controlled environment and uses a very simplistic space model but it provides a good example.

2) Crumb: When will we have an updated datatype/codec system? The level of optimization of Action/Moovid is quite good... but making a codec system we would see Premiere-like aplications developed more easily.

Fleecy: The entire datatypes system is up for an AG2 review for AmigaOS4.1. There is no point in implementing the new system until the new graphics and audio services are in place anyway since we'd have to reimplement all the codecs to take advantage of the new services.

3) Crumb: What about DVD Write support? There's no software for writting DVDs yet :-/

Fleecy: That's probably the only thing we won't be fitting into AmigaOS4.0 but it is pencilled in for AmigaOS4.1.

4) CanGuy: Apple is apparently replacing AppleTalk with Rendezvous. Has Amiga looked into using Apple's Rendezvous (or similar technologies like the IETF's in-development Zeroconf technolgy or jrendezvous, an open-souce implementation of the Rendezvous protocol) as an alternative to Envoy?

Fleecy: The "Rendezvous" protocol is a set of procedures for finding local services (printing, file sharing, etc.) offered in the local network and for assigning IP addresses to hosts. It's just that and does not imply any sort of file sharing or printing protocol. The Zeroconf protocol(s) are still in flux, but Apple took the plunge to deploy (and to publish MacOS X sample source code for the implementation) a solution. Hardly anybody else seems to be using it so far. And it may be wise to wait a little longer for information to trickle in how well it works and for other implementations to become available and to mature (the Apple supplied code is rather MacOS X specific).

For the time being, the TCP/IP stack to ship with AmigaOS4 will support automatic address assignment using one of the protocols of the Zeroconf specification. But that's it so far.

5) Asemoon: What do you consider the AmigaDE's most promising selling point or addition compared to standard Intent2 technology?

Fleecy: The content centric elements. Intent2 is a product that is focused heavily on the feedback the Tao-Group have received from their customers. These are chiefly OEMs and IHVS who are after embedded solutions to drive their hardware products. AmigaDE is focused on supplying content above that layer, and so we have not only a highly flexible packing, distribution and deployment solution but also services for content developers which free them from having to do common tasks - a good example being Astorage and AmiDB.

6) Jose: Do you sitll have the rights to the tick (or checkmark, as somepeople call it) logo? And the Amiga word in italic as it's stamped on the case of our Classic Amigas?

Fleecy: I believe so but I haven't checked. It's not within my domain.

7) Morka: Will be in OS4 something like Windows update or Symantec LiveUpdate?

Fleecy: There is a fundamental issue when considering an automatic maintenance system, and that is how do we have both a 100% knowable system and also allow power users to tinker? An AMS needs to assume that it has complete control of the maintenance domain (or at least that there is a formal way of identifying all changes that may have been made to its last knowable image) otherwise it will base its maintenance on knowledge that may just be completely wrong. A good example of this is the Windows architecture. Changes made through formal mechanisms are reflected in the registry but users can still move into the actual filing system itself and make changes which may/may not be reflected in the registry.

We are already looking at such a system but it will initially be for closed solutions - auto updates for Smartphones, STBS, Games consoles and the like. We have to look at whether power users would accept such control or else implement some sort of transaction logging/journaling and lock down all possible points of change.

8) mjohnson: Is Amiga reaching out to digital camera developers and producers of film scanners (Canon, Nikon, Minolta, Fuji, Kodak, Olympus), to enable the availability of drivers and custom viewer/raw-file software for these products for the A1/OS4? (or will it come for OS5) Also, will (digital image)-card readers be usable through OS4 without too much fuss?

Fleecy: The answer here is the same as for any third party hardware that requires drivers. We have approached and been approached by many of the big players but their answer is almost always the same - we'll support you when you have a market base that makes commercial sense for us.

Luckily there are many standards in play, and with the new datatypes system, there will be a good foundation for third parties to step in and offer solutions. Once we can get the market base to an attractive size then we will revisit these companies.

9) alx: A while ago, Amiga published a timeplan on their website for what features will be in OS4.x and 5. Will there be a new one released to reflect, for instance, the features of OS4.2 that are now in OS4.0?

Fleecy: As with any project plan, things change so yes, we will release a new snapshot of where we are going but it won't be until after AmigaOS4.0 is released. Given the complexity and number of threads in the AmigaOS4.0 development, it is always the case that some take a shorter time, some take a longer time, and with that, some of the developers decided that they'll start work on things pencilled in for AmigaOS4.1, except that they are very quick and are finished before AmigaOS4.0 is ready.

We may just release the overall feature plan from AmigaOS4.0 to AmigaOS5.0 rather than trying to release individual products that may constantly change.

10) alx: I understand that in one of the later 4.x OSes, the current implementation of workbench, icons etc will be replaced. Few other desktop operating systems that I can think of have had this chance for a fresh start in a long time - what features will you be able to introduce that will make the Amiga's implementation superior to other OSes?

Fleecy: The interactive environment obviously sits on top of a variety of foundation services - graphics, audio, events, composition etc and so there is little point in changing large parts of the AG1 system when they will have to be reimplemented when the AG2 foundations services are implemented.

You are correct though that we have a chance to start from scratch with the entire interactive environment and we are deep into that process at the moment, concentrating on developing a much better workflow model. To be honest, this is far more important that 32 bit icons and skinnable frames - these things are just eye candy and relatively simple to implement, although they rarely make an environment better to use. There are many examples of gorgeous looking interfaces and applications, particularly games where the project managers have completely missed the point - an interface is for doing things with, not staring at. Looks are important but secondary and as always with Amiga, we are seeking to advance the total experience, not a specific (and most obvious) part of it.

We are intending to really push the boundaries here, and some of the concepts and models need to go through IP assessment before they are made publicly so don't be surprised if you don't hear about it for some time, and then it is suddenly upon you. I'm not trying to dodge the question but interface design has been stuck for the last decade and we think we have some ideas that could break through that deadlock. We aren't about to give them away.

Amiga Society: News about BBoAH and Schlachtfeld
The Big Book of Amiga Hardware by Ian Chapman had been updated again and comes now with even more comprehensive information.

Furthermore does the work on Schlachtfeld continue. Right now are especially Christian and Michael preparing the beta tests. For this is a portal built up that will be used by the testers to report their results to the developers using a form. Additionally will some polls be held in the near future regarding this subject.

For the time being is the team looking for beta testers and, should the occasion arise, some programmers for MorphOS. The tests will probably start at the end of the month. People who want to take part in theses should just send an email to Horst Diebel. (nba) (Translation: wk)

Major Update for ALGOR / ROMulus FlashROM Software
E3B, makers of the well known USB solutions for Amiga Classic, and Chris Hodges, programmer of many well known software solutions, a.o.t. the USB stack Poseidon, are glad to announce being able to make available an update for the FlashROM solutions developed by E3B.

In this update existing functionality has been optimized and expanded as well as some problems with some system configurations fixed. Thus users of the USB controller ALGOR as well as the FlashROM module ROMulus (HIGHWAY) have a mature and field-tested solution for the integration of additional software modules already at cold boot time at their disposal.

A short overview over the new functions:
  • Special treatment for exec.library and romupdate.idtag. Thus there is for the first time a full replacement for OS3.9's RomUpdate functionality.
  • increased speed by way of switching on the processor cache.
  • Workarounds for accelerator boards whose memory is not RomTag able. This solves many problems with certain accelerator boards even in Amiga 1200 tower rebuildings.
  • Many internal changes and corrections, making the bootloader more stable and safer. Special attention has been paid to highest compatibility with unusual accelerator boards.

The basic functions of ALGOR and ROMulus are essentially unchanged:

  • comfortable user interface for programming the FlashROM (MUI).
  • In case of an emergency the most important functions can be reached without MUI via command line.
  • Drag'n'Drop when configuring the FlashROM via MUI.
  • transparent and reset fast integration of any ROM modules.
  • use of USB stack Poseidon directly on cold boot time.
  • abolition of the OS3.9 ROM-Patch-Reset by integrating the ROM updates and thus faster boot tie of the computer.
  • Booting the Amiga from USB mass storage directly after cold boot possible.
  • full replacement of Amiga mouse and keyboard by respective USB devices via new input.device (also in the boot menu if OS 3.9 BoingBag 2 present).
  • easy switching off of the ROM modules during bootup possible.
  • integrated transparent compression for efficient usage of the FlashROM.

The ALGOR resp. the FlashROM module ROMulus (upgrade for HIGHWAY) each have 512kb (256kx16 resp. 4 MBit) FlashROM which can be easily programmed via the user interface Luciferin. The FlashROM allows highest possible speed when booting the computer by way of wordwise access and the extremely early activation; use is possible in all Zorro II and Zorro III systems (also A1200 tower with Zorro slots).

The update for Luciferin is available exclusively for registered owners of ALGOR and ROMulus - all registered users are mailed by E3B and receive the update by eMail. Should you have not yet registered, please send in your filled in registration card or contact E3B by eMail (mboehmer@e3b.de).

A warm thank you at this place to Hartmut Schulze for his support through extensive bug reports and hints. (nba) (Translation: cb)

AROS (website)

AROS status report 08/2003
The developments on the operating system AROS go still as planned. In the last weeks had the following update been done:
  • Hardware: Michal Schulz is still working on the PPC port, having received the Pegasos board donated by Genesi, and more recently a Voodoo3 card donated by Randy Vice.
  • Hardware: Johan Grip is implementing the OpenPCI specification, and also reworking our buggy ide.device, which attempts to write too much data at once instead of splitting the requests in smaller chunks. However this is going to be more a rewrite than a bug fix. If someone just wants to do the bug fix, there is an open bounty (currently 40 USD) for the ide.device bug at TeamAROS.
  • Build system: GCC 3.2 is now the minimum requirement to compile AROS, which now compiles fine with GCC 3.3, thanks to Stefan Reinauer and others who fixed the various deprecated bits in the tree.
  • Build System: Staf Verhaegen continued to improve and simplify the build system. Lately, he reorganized the kernel build to use only objects, no more static or shared libraries.
  • Build System: Iain Templeton, one of our South hemisphere developers, did his fair share on the build system too, especially on the configure scripts (which now require autoconf 2.53, hopefully a generated configure is kept in CVS for those missing it) and to ensure that AROS compiles and runs fine hosted on FreeBSD.
  • Build System: Also mawk (which comes as default on Debian GNU/Linux) will generate incorrect headers while building AROS, but GNU awk (gawk) and FreeBSD awk work fine.
  • i386-pc Installation: John Gustafsson and Adam Chodorowski earned the first TeamAROS bounty for their "Automated Disk Prep and OS Installer". It will install AROS on the first disk of the first IDE channel. Don't try this on a disk with valuable data anywhere on it, you've been warned. Unfortunately it isn't fully usable yet, due to the ide.device bug: some files get corrupted during installation.
  • i386-pc Installation: As part of this work, new Format and Partition commands were implemented.
  • User Interface: We now have a beautiful About dialog, thanks to Pixel Art's logo and Adam for the code, as well as an in-progress Mesa port by Nic Andrews. And before you ask, the beautiful Broken.miho wallpaper is here.
  • User Interface: Adam did major improvements to the workbench and icon libraries (which handle much of the "under the hood" desktop work), and also to Wanderer itself. The framework for Wanderer commands is in place, and there is already the Delete tool implemented.
  • User Interface: As a bonus, there is now an identification hook in icon.library to display proper icons depending on the file type and take appropriate action on double-click, for files without disk icons.
  • User Interface: Sebastian Bauer added arbitrary angled gradients to Zune images.
  • User Interface: David Le Corfec, Adam and especially Fabio Alemagna, who came up with a multitude of ideas and algorithms, brainstormed on a "perfectly" MUI-compliant implementation of Zune layout algorithm. Hopefully the new one seems to do the trick.
  • User Interface: The Zune string gadget also got a rework and is now slightly more usable, the prefs program got a few more pages, and many Zune classes were put in their own loadable modules.
  • User Interface: Georg Steger implemented the Cybergraphics' WritePixelArrayAlpha() and BltTemplateAlpha(), so we can show even more eye-candy, with alpha blending this time :) Adam used this to implement a nice grayed-out disabled effect for Zune gadgets, instead of the usual grid pattern.
  • User Interface: Georg is also porting back the intuition.library from MorphOS, and still does a lot of impressive bug finding and fixing elsewhere, which for example led to find and report a longstanding bug in stipple drawing to the XFree86 project. And when you're faced with a strange memory corruption, try his invaluable trick : call a check routine in the scheduler ! This allowed to fix bugs in several Prefs programs.
  • User Interface: But maybe the best for the end ... With BltTemplateAlpha() to blend the anti-aliased glyphs, and the work from Staf on freetype2, diskfont and bullet libraries, TrueType fonts now work - and look - great! It also draws upon the work of many others, including the MorphOS team (and especially Emmanuel Lesueur) and the FreeType project. The Bitstream Vera font family is now included in AROS.
  • User Interface: Use FTManager to install TrueType fonts in a few mouse clicks, and enjoy the new Font Prefs program.
  • Localizations: We got a Spanish keymap contributed by Albert Astals Cid, several French catalogs by Olivier Adam and Hungarian catalogs, language and country files by Mark "Bôregér" Balogh.
  • Localizations: The applications localization system has been cleaned up a bit, and as a side effect, much more applications are now localized. So if your favorite application has been localized but misses a catalog for your language, don't hesitate to send it to us!
  • TCP/IP: Will be available next week. Nah, just kidding ;-) One of the most requested features. A couple of people are working part-time on this, so don't hold your breath. This is a huge task, spanning from low-level drivers to interface libraries and support applications. It's currently not the priority for most of the developers. Use another network appliance in the meantime, or come join us :)
  • Softwares in contribution: As usual, some new software or updated versions were imported in contrib: UAE 0.8.22 (a Zune GUI is planned), the free DeluxePaint clone 4P 0.09, TCC 0.9.19 (you can now directly create AROS executables!), GNU tools (make 3.80, diffutils 2.8.1, patch 2.5.4, grep 2.5.1, m4 1.4), abcm2ps 3.7.1, sploiner 1.0
  • Miscellaneous: After some benchmarking, BOOPSI method calls were optimized using macros, and are now about 20% faster.
  • Miscellaneous: Roughly 2000 CVS commits since the last status update, with a record of 1063 in July. Check it there. So obviously this status update is not exhaustive.
