AROS: GTK-Wrapper GTK-MUI 2.0
GTK-MUI is a Wrapper with which you can convert GTK-applications for AROS/MUI.

The author Oliver Brunner has published now version 2.0 which was mainly new written and is based on glib/gobjects. Most parts of the original GTK-sources are used. Additionally many new "Widgets" have been added.

Despite this there are some limitations: GDK/Pango are still not implemented. But according to the author this is not important for most of the user-interfaces because these functions are supplied by MUI/Zune. If you are going to port a GTK-application you have to add some code on GTK-MUI. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Instant Messenger: SabreMSN Alpha 34
James 'jahc' Carroll has published another update of his Instant Messenger for the MSN-network for AmigaOS 3 and AmigaOS 4 (screenshot). Changes in this version:
  • The "cancel" buttons for file transfers work now. Also, Sabre now gives more detailed reasons when transfers fail
  • Increased the packet size back up to 2045 bytes
  • Tinkered with typecasts for the headers for file transfer packets and it seems to give correct values now. Hopefully transfers wont abort midway through now

The author points out that SabreMSN only supports the older version of the MSN-protocol for file transfers. If an incoming transfer should be announced ("Waiting for incoming file..") but it will not start then the other user has a program which supports the newer version of the protocol. This implementation in SabreMSN will follow. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Colmar Multimedia Expo: Reports, photos and videos
From 24. until 26. October in Colmar the Multimedia Expo 2008 took place. For Sébastien Jeudy from Relec the common booth with ACube and RMS Communications was a success:

Many users from France, Switzerland, Italy, Belgiun, Germany, Great Britain or Denmark visited the booth as well as some well-known faces from the whole Amiga-world - e.g. Hyperion Entertainment (Ben Hermans and the Frieden-brothers), Amiga-News.de, Voxel Amiga Shop, IMM Informatique, Amiga Repair Center.

You could see AmigaOS 4.1 on a SAM440ep, the SAM440ep-flex-motherboard, MorphOS 2.1 on an Efika and a Pegasos, the Minimig as well as AmigaOS 4.1 on a touchscreen for the first time. The SAM440/AmigaOS 4.1-conference 50-60 persons attended it.

As a great ending RMS Communications with its KMU-software won the innovation price.

Instant Messenger: SabreMSN Alpha 33
James 'jahc' Carroll has published another update of his Instant Messenger for the MSN-network for AmigaOS 3 and AmigaOS 4 (screenshot). Changes in this version:
  • I didnt align my file info block structure properly, and it was reporting an incorrect filesize value for file transfers under OS3
  • "Error: Incorrect Login or Password" is reported now for incorrect login details
  • Groupchats seemed broken. I attempted to fix it again
  • I've tinkered with the code for adding contacts
  • Every MSN account you use with Sabre will now store an individual "renamed contacts" file (locally).
  • "user says:" and "user is typing.." messages now use the local "renamed contacts" names, so they match the name in the contacts list.
  • Tinkered with file sending code slightly. It uses 127 byte packets now to avoid problems with Sabre to Sabre file transfers. But sometimes sending to Windows clients fails, reporting: "The file transfer was unsuccessful because your computer is out of disk space. Try deleting some files, and then ask the sender to try the transfer again."

Report and pictures of the Colmar Multimedia-Expo
Last weekend the Colmar Multimedia-Expo took place and Philippe Bourdin reports for Amiga-News.de and a gallery of the event can be found on his private website.

As a special highlight the Relec-team comprised of Emmanuel Rey and Sébastien Jeudy presented a kiosk system from KiOSKLiNEA / PASCOAL design at their booth. The system consists of industrial components like a vandalism-proof keyboard internals based on a SAM440ep. Additionally an infra-red touch screen was used, which was able to read the position of the finger (converted to the screen size) with a resolution of 32000x32000 pixels. The touch screen is available as a standard component with USB-connector and Windows-driver and will be physically mounted on top of a normal LCD display panel as an overlay device. AmigaOS 4.1 was installed in order to demonstrate the kiosk system.

Simon "Rigo" Archer created an OS4-driver for this touch screen in three days, without having access to the Windows-sources or the hardware documentation. Nonetheless, the driver has a very high resolution and is able work even with very fast movements, which can be transposed relatively easy with the hardware-accelerated compositing in AmigaOS.

ACube Systems was also present at the booth and showed the Minimig-board amongst others. For future developments, Philippe "Elwood" Ferrucci said in his presentation at the presentaion booth that ACube is happy about the public interest in SAM440ep and that the SAM440ep-flex (sometimes shortened as "SAM 1.5") will become available in the next few months. SAM440ep and the flex-variant (with 3 PCI slots but no onboard graphics) are the current product line-up and which will include the Flex available in the near future.

In principle, the target for current and future developments are the embedded market because of the advantages of the SAM support of light-weight operating system like AmigaOS and Linux. In particular the low power consumption of around 20 watts, the low operating temperature around 40 °C and the possibility for absolutely silent machine without any moving parts are best suited for special needs of certain applications in that area. Together with two Ethernet connectors even routing applications are possible. ZigBee and ccTalk are among the many variations that are perfect for industrial application customers.

The SAM440ep-flex will be bundled with AmigaOS 4.1 and Relec will offer it in the already known REL80 case (picture), because the TheRedOne case (picture) is only suited for the SAM440ep. There are negotiations going on for additional software bundles like the one with "Word Me Up XXL".

Whilst talking with Hans-Jörg and Thomas Frieden, the current priority in development of AmigaOS has clearly been formulated to finish the SAM-version of AmigaOS as soon as possible. This will then be delivered (including the SAM backplates) cost-free for previous customers. A new SDK for AmigaOS 4.1 is expected around December time that is going into beta testing very soon and will presumably include the gcc compiler 4.2.4 as well as Cairo header files. After these steps there is still work ongoing with Blender and some other project that is still not publicly announced on purpose.

Costel "Cyborg" Mincea is currently working on network drivers and would like to see new developers become involved on a Bluetooth project. Other important projects may include an AmigaOS version of wxWidgets that would ease a port of AudioEvolution. For applications like GIMP, a wrapper for GTK+ is helpful, since Cairo 2.8 is supported as a backend. Interested programmers are very welcome to apply to join.

Stéphane Guillard is currently working on a SATA 2 driver and "command queuing", which works quite similar to SCSI-reselect on the classic Amiga. One of his wishes would be a developer, who could work on a Firewire harddisk driver, which should not be a too challenging task, but first USB-2 on AmigaOS has the more priority.

Furthermore Jean-Francois "Voxel" Bachelet of the Voxel Amiga Shop and Jean-Jacques Boulet of the Amiga Reper Center have been there and were taking CyberstormPPC cards and AmigaOne boards for repair.

Unfortunately, the state of an OpenOffice-port is unchanged, basically whilst there was huge interest, no developer team for such a big project could yet been formed.

Additionally the Relec booth has had, beside the SAM systems, Pegasos and Efika systems running MorphOS 2 which could be tried out by the visitors.

Finally, a worthy mention of RMS Communications, who were surprised by the big public interest in their business software, for which they have been awarded the "Trophées de l'innovation" (innovation award) in the software category. The author Christoph Pölzl worked for around two and a half years on this hobby project, which can be seen as a competitor to SAPs SME-software (info) containing address database, project administration, purchasing, raw materials and finished product stockkeeping, accounting and in future even an internet shop as well as HTML and PDF export. The software is based on MUIbase, which is continually being improved by Steffen Gutmann.

The Colmar Multimedia-Expo has shown a lot of entertainment electronics, but Relec and ACube have built up some promising business contacts, and were very pleased with the outcome of the show.

The Amiga-News.de team wish the best of luck and much success to all participants! A special thank to Simon Archer for his help for the translation! (dr) (Translation: dr)

KICKTOS: Kickstart disk for the Amiga 1000 with Atari TOS
Andre Pfeiffer wrote: In contrast to all other available Atari-ST-emulators KICKTOS boots a TOS (V1.02) to the original memory address where.

Because it hast only a size of 192 KB it was possible to set all Amiga specific special routines in the memory behind the TOS. The Amiga-1000-WOM has 256 KB;. Therefore for the Amiga specific routines 64 KB remains.

With the Amiga hardware the TOS is safe from destroying by overwriting and the whole normal memory remains for the applications.

The current version is only a technology demo because some adaptions of the memory management and keyboard requests must be improved.

A special thank to Toni Wilen who helped me with the peculiarities of the 68000. I only had to write KICKTOS 20 years ago... (snx) (Translation: dr)

IRC-Client: WookieChat 2.11 Beta 1
James 'jahc' Carroll has published an update of his MUI-based IRC-client WookieChat. Changes in this version:
  • Part messages werent working on Undernet at times because the channel had an extra character at the start.. i.e. instead of #newzealanders it was :#newzealanders. therefore Wookie couldnt find the right tab to put the part message in
  • DCC has had a few bugfixes. There was a problem with not "long word aligning" files when working with DCC. The problem only existed under OS3 though, PPC was unaffected
  • Norwegian language catalog updated

Seeding the Success Campaign: August winner asks for payback
The project manager of the OS4-team, Hans-Jörg Frieden, won the prize of the "Seeding the Success Campaign" endowed by DiscreetFX for August.

Instead of paying the money of 100 US-Dollar Bill Panagouleas started an appeal for donation which should provide a Playstation 3 to the developer.

With this action Hans-Jörg Frieden should be pushed along to port AmigaOS-4 to this game console. But from the beginning Hans-Jörg told that there is not any real opportunity of realizing it. So he did not feel comfortable.

Under the title link Hans-Jörg Frieden clarified that he asked DiscreetFX to delete the corresponding bounty site and to pay back the donations because he cannot fullfill the hopes. Up to now he did not get any answer from Bill Panagouleas. (snx) (Translation: dr)

ARexx script: SpamFryer 6:18
SpamFryer is an ARexx script written by Simon N. Goodwin which recognizes Spam-eMails and then deletes them directly from the POP3-server or put them in a Spam directory of the eMail program YAM.

The new version 6:18 includes 200 rules for the recognation of Spam which you can extend by editing the text file.

Changes:
  • Updated rules, around 200 (see SpamFryer.loseList) - These include a new group for SpamFryer 6, all the old standards from SpamFryer 5 and 4 (some of which you may find are no longer very useful as certain internet fads are currently on the wane) and an extra set we've found to be quite effective in 2008 but which are commented out (safety first!) as a few users might have legitimate interactions involving those patterns which their keepList may not catch. To improve SpamFryer performance, remove the // prefix unless you're worried that you may actually want mails containing these spam-characteristic patterns
  • Option to start SpamFryer in interactive mode - Preview the content of your mailbox, and select the mails you want to keep or delete
  • Option to sort the rules - SpamFryer will re-build the keeplist and loselist so that the most often triggered rules are the first ones used to check the mails. This also gives some stats about spam
  • Standard localisation support and new translation tool - SpamFryer now runs in your (system prefered) language. Currently available language: French. More to come
  • Support for APOP (POP3 protocol) password encryption - If your mail server support it, APOP will be used, for a safer session
  • Support for Thor mailer (customised version of SpamFryer)
  • Folded mail headers are now fully supported to RFC 822 - SpamFryer checks each entire header line even when it is wrapped onto multiple lines
  • Option to fry mails above a specified size, and sanity check on very long lines - Avoid a possible buffer-overflow by setting a limit for text line length (RFC 822 recommends a maximum of 80 characters per line, but not all mailers respect that)
  • TABs handled as SPACEs - When applying the rules, any tabulation character in a mail is seen as a space character when checking for a match
  • No dependency upon external programs or libraries - SpamFryer will use some of them, but will not fail if they are not available
  • Default password requester - If rexxreqtool.library is not installed, SpamFryer will use its own requester
  • Account selection shortcuts (in interactive mode) - If you have fewer than 10 accounts to check, you can quickly select the one to browse by pressing a numeric key
  • Memory checking - If you have a LOT of mails waiting in your mailbox, but have a system with a small amount of RAM, SpamFryer will warn you about any ongoing memory shortage and continue checking as much mail as it can
  • Option to over-write or append to previous logs
  • Early exit (to the next account) if supplied password is null
  • Examples showing how to build a one-button launcher with DOpus Magellan, and AmigaDOS scripts to quickly launch SpamFryer from Workbench
  • More lose rules added, for even more spam frying
  • Plus many other less-visible improvements which help to make SpamFryer even more comfortable to use

SAM440ep bundle: THE RED ONE and Word Me Up XXL
Press release: The Amiga games editor Boing Attitude :o) and the software & hardware distributor RELEC have entered into an agreement to offer you a bargain opportunity. Both are indeed pleased to announce that every new purchaser of the THE RED ONE SAM440ep with AmigaOS 4.1 OEM will get a Word Me Up XXL new game licence!

Word Me Up XXL combines an arcade game with strategic thinking and memory skills. Suitable for all the family, it's a non violent game. It's easy for all ages to play thanks to a steady progression through up to 60 levels. What's more, there are cartoon graphics, funny sound effects and a great selection of background music.

Jérôme Senay, founder of Boing Attitude :o), sums up : "I'm very happy to work with RELEC, who showed since many years their determination to support Amiga. Moreover, they also have capacity for producing novative and novel hardware like "THE RED ONE" unit, the perfect computer to run our game".

Emmanuel Rey, RELEC's representative, concludes : "Innovation begins with such agreements. Since RELEC exists, our philosophy in matter of clientele is based on a "win-win" solution. In this field, we really have to think as a customer to ask ourselves the good questions. For example, with our brand new "THE RED ONE", specifications don't really matter as they are the same with every reseller. What leads our choices is a polished design and a few little plus, like for example its travel case. But with Word Me Up XXL, Boing Attitude :o) offers a significant advantage and we, at RELEC, are really proud of it!" (cg) (Translation: cg)
