Remake of Sierra's "Gold Rush" (1989) can be preordered
After "Cinemaware Retro", obviously Sunlight Games also is planning to remake and sell retro games. It will be started with Sierra's text adventure Gold Rush (1989) which will be released under Sunlight's new label "Retrotainment" and which currently can be preordered for 25 Euro in its webshop. Items in this Special Edition:
  • Game on 2 Disks for Amiga (Because of different types of disk-drives used in the Amiga, there may be problems reading the disks. Therefore, the CD contains the ADF-files to copy the content onto disks with a free tool.)
  • Disks with a printed color label
  • Printed manual
  • On CD: Book "California Gold" for copy protection, drawings, ADF game files
  • On DVD: PC-Remake "Gold Rush! Anniversary", playable on PC without Internet connection, DRM-free
  • A printed certificate including the serial-number of the limited Special Edition
  • A printed DIN A1 poster on a high-quality paper
  • A printed label of the game logo

Hint of the editorial: The screenshots in the webshop are slightly misleading: the bottom row of the screen was cut. There the text input line of Gold Rush is - the game uses Sierra's older AGI-engine which requires commands entered with the keyboard. Sunlight's "cut" version is supposed to suggest a more modern feeling than it really is. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Javascript: TAWS - The Amiga Workbench Simulation 0.32
TAWS ("The Amiga Workbench Simulation") is a Javascript simulation of the Amiga-Workbench 1.0 - 4.1FE for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera and Apple-WebKit-Browser (including Odyssey). Any kind of feedback the author Michael Rupp would very appreciate. His work can be supported by a donation from inside TAWS.

Version 0.32 provides the following changes:

  • Tribute to AmiKit XE:
    • new Presets "OS 3.9 AmiKitX Dark"
    • new Presets "OS 3.9 AmiKitXE Retro"
    • accordingly adjusted boot animation
    • new window layout "3.9 AmiKit X Dark"
    • new window layout "3.9 AmiKit XE Retro"
    • new pattern "AmiKit X Backdrop Dark"
    • new pattern "AmiKit XE Backdrop Dark"
    • new pattern "AmiKit XE Backdrop Retro"

  • Created version 2.0 of the Topaz-Fonts A500 und A1200 erstellt: added the special characters of the languages polish, czech and russian. No more need for the additional russian font.
  • Chrome: workaround for a change (or bug?) in its layout engine in one of the latest versions (+/- v77.0), which rendered all windows (except those with fuelbars) with bottom borders too large.
  • Performance increase when starting TAWS by using XMLHttpRequest() instead of img.onerror() when dynamically checking the existence of the elements of a window layout.
  • File size optimizations of some pattern images.
  • Bugfixes:
    • Firefox, Internet Explorere and MS Edge: correction of the horizontal gradients by 180° (AmiKitX's boot progress bar, vertical scrollbar of the palette's listbox).
    • smaller corrections of the window layout "OS 3.9 AmiKitX"
    • small layout correction when minimizing the prefs windows
    • DiskCopy: correction of a JavaScript error (bug since 0.30)
    • Keyboard navigation: if more than one GUI element is using the same shortcut, now only the first is executed.

MorphOS: Software Development Kit 3.14
Press release: The MorphOS development team is proud to announce the release of the MorphOS Software Development Kit 3.14 (October 2019). Our new software development kit advances a number of key technologies enabled by updates to the latest binutils 2.32, ports of the most recent versions of the GCC7, GCC8 and GCC9 compilers as well as a newer perl.

The threading models in GCC5 and up were changed to posix, enabling better libstdc++ compatibility in std::thread, etc thanks to the new ports of libpth and libpthread. A switch to the DWARF2 Exception Handling Model improves performance of C++ code of up to 30 percent. Objective-C ARC is now supported on MorphOS thanks to the introduction of the ObjFW runtime and other advances in compiler ports.

The new SDK requires MorphOS 3.12 and about 3GB of free disk space and can be found in our files section. As always, a separate source package is available for download as well. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Review of browsers on an Amiga 1200 under AmigaOS 3.9 (Update)
In 2019, for the operating system AmigaOS 3.9 there are three different browsers which can be used to surf the Internet using an Amiga 1200? But how does this work? Our editor Daniel Reimann has taken a closer look.

It is hard to believe: In 2019, still it is possible to surf the Internet using my 25 years old Amiga-1200 running AmigaOS 3.9. Recently the best-known browser for the Amiga, called IBrowse, has been updated to version 2.5. Besides, there are two different versions of the browser NetSurf, which both are constantly developed: Artur Jarosik's recently updated developer version 3.10 is based on SDL, Chris Young's ReAction-based version also has been updated to developer version 3.10 in July. This version constantly is being replaced by updated builds.

The key question is: Which websites you can surf using these three browsers and an outdated, at least very slow performing computer technology? How do they manage the websites of the Internets, which nowadays are created using standards like CSS, HTML5, Javascript and a lot of pictures and clips? A first indication that this will be not quite simple is the fact, that by the release of version 3.10 both NetSurf browsers for the first time provide rudimentary support for JavaScript.

One aspect is clear: Browsing the Internet using an Amiga 1200, upgraded by a Blizzard-1230 accelerator board, it requires a lot of patience and creativity. This article is not supposed to and cannot review all aspects but maybe gives you an idea how differently the browsers display the layout and text of the websites, how much time they take and by that is supposed to encourage you to (again) browse the Internet for yourself.

Being able to load websites within a reasonable time, by default loading pictures and Javascript is disabled. In this way some sites look a little bit "amputated", but it saves a lot of time. As we shall see sometimes it cannot be avoided to load pictures. Otherwise you have not access to some functions of the website.

We start our tour with our homepage. In this case we indulge in the luxury having pictures enabled. When amiga-news.de could be accessed unencrypted, IBrowse only took a few seconds to load the website. Now, like many other sites, a "https"-connection has to be established which takes iBrowse 50 seconds to load the site (30 seconds pictures disabled). But IBrowse display the site much sooner, only some loading processes last a little bit longer without changing anything else:

Both NetSurf versions take much longer: Artur's NetSurf 240 seconds (curiously Netsurf calculates only 170s; 73 s without pictures). The result was quite good. The site is displayed compactly and clearly legible:

es Chris Young's NetSurf takes a similar time. The graphic of amiga-news.de looks blurred which might be explained by reducing my Workbench to 64 colours.

Looking at these two pictures, the different concepts of menu navigation can be explained. While Artur's Netsurf completely dispense with a menu and therefore you have not quick access to options, Chris' version offers the menu navigation known from Amiga programs. Using it you can easily and fast turn on/off loading foreground and background pictures as well as disable/enable JavaScript or scaling the view. Artur's NetSurf uses a separate MUI prefrerences window. By calling it (on the left side the first buttom under the Google search), NetSurf disappears and the preferences windows appears:

Also Chris' version offers a separate preferences window for more detailed options.

Curiously amiga-news.de is the only website (so far), where the loading time, calculated and shown by Netsurf bottom right, differs so much from the real one. Both NetSurf versions then only took about 15 seconds for loading the individual news items.

After reading about iBrowse on amiga-news.de, we want to see what the Google search else knows about the browser:

Artur's Netsurf provides the results after 31s (above). Chris' Netsurf takes 26s, IBrowse 25s (below), all with pictures enabled:

Here we notice the link to Wikipedia (https-connection!), which we adventurously open. IBrowse takes 60s for loading the website (pictures enables even though not a single one can be seen), but after 40s the website is displayed. Only some loading activities which do not change the look take another 20s:

Chris' NetSurf fails responding a software failure. Upon request Chris wrote: "I can't test the 68k version because it doesn't work on my UAE any more, but Wikipedia was fine on the OS4 build last time I checked". Artur's version takes 240s:

By releasing the developer version 3.10, Artur Jarosik's NetSurf now supports AmiSSL 4.3. Comparative tests with version 3.9 could not prove any speed advantage for encrypted connections.

Now we want to check a website which requires JavaScript. For this we dare ebay-kleinanzeigen.de. As mentioned previously sometimes you have to be creative. Which means: Do not call the main site (https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de but take the shortcut to the direct log in site, in this case https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/m-einloggen.html?targetUrl=/.

IBrowse masters the challenge after 170s:

Both NetSurf candidates failed. After some loading process both version freezed. Only one time I got Artur's Netsurf loading the website so I could have logged in:

Jumping for joy I entered my mail address when I realized that my "@" symbol was a "2". Further tests showed that it also is not possible to copy and paste because obviously the "alt" key do not work. Artur said, using Alt+2 or Shift+2 the "@" symbol should appear but I failed. I hope some of the readers can tsts it.

Finally I want to show some examples demonstrating strengths and weaknesses of the different browsers. We always want to know how the weather is. First a screenshot in which way Firefox dislay the website under Windows:

Using the direct link, Chris' NetSurf tries to load the site:

and now Artur's Netsurf:

I guess Artur wins the point.

Being a passionate train traveller, I want to check the rail links. Again we do not use the homepage bahn.de but enter the link for the travel information reiseauskunft.bahn.de. All three browser do not offer any automatic suggestions for starting and destination station. In my case I was lucky because I got the correct main stations out of my entries. IBrowse only takes 25s (all disabled). After another 20s you get a really familiar view of the travel information. Great!

Unfortunately I did not get Chris' NetSurf starting the search because although all pictures have been enabled, no "serch" field appeared. After 517s Artur's Netsurf provides the option of entering the parameters and starting a search. After another 828s(!) you get the following result:

The good new is: It works and looks pretty good although the time required by Netsurf is quite high.

Some final comments. One additional plus point IBrowse and Artur's NetSurf get for their capability of scrolling down and up websites without jerking and rebuilding the website. Chris' NetSurf always build a website top down.

Regarding the stability (on my system), I must praise all browsers: If the browsers were successfully launched, they run without any problems. IBrowse gets another plus point for its special reliability. No problems, no crashes. In contrast, Chris' NetSurf has always crashed after quitting it so I had to reboot. Artur's NetSurf sometimes stopped loading after launching the program or the welcome screen was displayed very, very slowly. Besides, the mouse pointer sometimes stucked in the scroll bar.

One detail I was surprised: Although in the prefrerences I did set the harddrive cache to "0 MB" and the RAM to "80 MB" for a better, faster performance, the HDD lamp of my Amiga-1200 flashed while loading the websites. Chris said: "Maybe there is still something in the cache from before". But I guess it could be caused by AmiSSL. The question is if the options setting obove has an influence on the loading time of the browser at all. Maybe some readers have also tested it and can provide some additional information.

Update: (12.10.2019, 16:30, dr)

Of course we have informed all three developers about the publication of this article. We want to share the statements of Chris Young and Oliver Roberts.

Chris Young (NetSurf) wrote: "Interesting! I will note that my version of NetSurf needs more work, but it really needs to be looked at by somebody who is knowledgeable about 68k code in order to track down the bugs and optimise. I don't have the time or inclination to work on it much and am reaching the limit of my ability."

And Oliver Roberts (IBrowse) noted: "Very interesting. One thing I'd like to point out: Google will look much better if you use the default IBrowse 2.5 settings. In the defaults, IBrowse will spoof as MSIE 5.5 on Google, resulting in a much better experience."

Of course I did pursue this lead. He is right. You can change the corresponding option in the preferences of IBrowse under "network" and then "spoofing". However: I did not change anything here before. By default (after installation of IBrowse 2.5) "IBrowse" was enabled here.

AROS distribution: Icaros 64 V0.0.0 pre-alpha
Paolo Besser has written under the title link about the 64-bit version of his Icaros Desktop: "Yes, you've read it right. It's time to enter the 64-bit Amiga era by the front door, taking advantage of modern x86-64 processors like Core and Ryzen. But beware: this is pre-alpha, un-stable, un-finished, un-reliable software. It's good to see it in action, to check what's working and what's not, to get familiar with latest AROS development, but it's definitely no good yet for everyday's use (which also means that if you didn't consider 32-bit Icaros Desktop ready for this scope... well, this is even worse)." Under the title link in the forum of a1k.org the world's smallest 68k FPGA turbo board was introduced - it is "just about 5mm taller than an original 68k in its socket." For the accelerator board the TG68 core is used @50MHz which was also used for the MiST project.

Key features:
  • Artix7-FPGA (215k Logic-Cells)
  • 64 MB SD-RAM (32-Bit-Bus)
  • 16 MB Flash-ROM
  • Micro-SD-Card-Slot
  • SPI-BUS
Currently the FPGA accelerator board still is in development. The primary objective is an improved stability. At this stage the bus width of the RAM connection only is 16 Bit, but is supposed to be doubled. Then the support for the SD card, for the SPI bus and for the KickFlash will be done and finally also a MMU. The source code of the FPGA turbo board is supposed to be released. Game Construction Kit: RedPill 0.7.2
RedPill is a Game Construction Kit written in AmiBlitz2, which can help developing games of diverse genres - published videos show versions of Pacman and Mirror. RedPill is compatible to AGA and ECS, the "player" requires 1 MB Chip as well as some Fast RAM.

If you are about to update your previsous (0.6.x) version, you will notice that opening an existing project might take a longer time to load - the program is correcting a wrong calculation of the number of levels of the previous version.

Changes in version 0.7.1:
  • Export added in main screen to export the project into an encrypted .redpill file. This file can only be opened from the Redpill player.
  • Export will create a folder named export, this export folder is the distribution folder of your game.
  • Now each map can have its own tileset, the palette will be adapted to the spritesheet palette if there aren't enough colors available.
  • This also means each level now has its own palette saved in a separate file
  • Help for triggers is available inside the editor, just select a trigger and press the Help key. Sadly it is not finishing and not all triggers are documented, but it will come.
  • Condition triggers had a general optimization resulting in faster condition evaluation.
  • Level object screen has been changed to allow editing in a simpler way, several issues have been fixed.
  • Object triggers can be exported to text for easier and global visualization.
  • External text editor can be set in the icon, just like the image editor.
  • In the HUD, the icon sprite used can be set with either a number or number variable.
  • Added manual sprite cut to manually cut frames from a spritesheet.
  • Added action trigger Angle to target that sets the GO angle to point the target, useful for shots and many more.
  • Added action trigger Tiled Move to move objects in tiles.
  • Added action trigger Tiled Push to push other others away when moving objects with Tiled Move.
  • Collision boxes changed to the old (and better) routine.
  • Animation frames can now last less than 0.05.
  • Tabs added in the level editor screen for faster ediing.
  • Minimap tab added to the level editor for quick visualization of tiles and game objects, and map repositioning.
  • Sound Generator added to create new sounds inside the editor, the save feature uses DataToIff V1.1 - Sound File Conventer - Written by Janne Saarme 1990-1992.
  • Bouncing example added in the examples directory.
  • Pillman game example has been added to the projects folder.
  • Red color has been added in the editor for some menus and UI elements.
  • Dialog engine noe uses AGA colors when the game is AGA.
  • Added protection code to the custom load font, if font is not found it should not break.
  • If the background sprites cannot be loaded then level sprites are deactivated.
  • Frame has been removed from the HUD Bar element
  • HUD Bar element now can show timer variables.
  • Issue fixed with HUD texts numbers not being erased correctly.
  • Fixed issue with triggers Hit->CustomX not working properly.
  • Lumberjack platform by Lemming880 has been added to the projects.
Changes in 0.7.2:
  • Parts of the HUD were erased under certain circumstances, this has been fixed.
  • Camera Follow now doesn't follow the Object when it is not active.
  • In Grid Slice, an empty frame was considered, reducing the number of available frames, this has been fixed.
  • Set Speed C action triggers now changes the side the Object if facing.
  • Set Speed X from var now takes into account the side, if side is left speed X will be negative.
  • Some glitches removed when switching between menus.
  • Minor fixes in audio.
  • Some other minor fixes

Operating system: MorphOS 3.12
Press release: The MorphOS development team is proud to announce the public release of MorphOS 3.12. This new version introduces brand new dual-monitor capabilities to various Powerbook laptops as well as G5 desktop systems, and features improved thermal management, fan control and dynamic CPU frequency switching, which provide increased energy efficiency and reduced noise levels. Additionally, the Helios Firewire stack has been fully integrated into the core OS and we added support for hundreds of modern printers and scanners.

Furthermore, the Odyssey web browser has been upgraded and now utilizes newer and more modern components for handling connections, encryption, spell-checking, and low-level drawing operations. Plus, it features a redesigned and more adaptive user interface.

In addition, our official integrated development environment Flow Studio has been substantially updated and extended yet again bringing numerous usability and LUA scripting enhancements, full support for Hollywood, and code sensing as well as function listing abilities for many additional languages.

Developers will also appreciate the inclusion of a new MUI text rendering engine that is capable of rendering Unicode text. This feature is currently enabled in selected applications and in all ObjC applications. Thanks to the addition of the new ObjFW runtime, it is now also possible to write native ObjC applications that utilize Automatic Reference Counting (ARC).

Moreover, MorphOS now offers a rewritten spellchecker that is based on Hunspell and libvoikko cores and uses UTF-8. Spell-checking is now supported in all of MUI's string input gadgets, Flow Studio and Odyssey.

For a more comprehensive explanation of these changes and a list of additional features, such as the ability to mute the boot chime on Mac computers from within MorphOS, please read our release notes.

We strongly urge new users to carefully read our installation and troubleshooting guides before they attempt to install MorphOS for the first time. Existing users can upgrade via the familiar procedure but are encouraged to read the guides as well. MorphOS 3.12 is available for download in our files section. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Amiga Forever 8: R2 update released
Cloanto's emulator package "Amiga Forever" - as well as its pendant "C64 Forever" - has been updated to version 8 R2. Changes include an option to dock the virtual keyboard beneath the playback window (screenshot) and controls for the full-screen mode that can be overlayed (screenshot).

Below you will find the official press release.

Press release: September 9, 2019 - Cloanto released today the "R2" (8.2.2.0) update for Amiga Forever 8 and C64 Forever 8.

The "R2" build is the result of eight months of work since the previous major release, and takes into account user feedback, operating system enhancements and numerous features from our own wish list.

This is a free update for existing version 8 users, who can get the new version through the Help/About dialog in Amiga Forever and C64 Forever. The updated full installation package can also be accessed via the original confirmation e-mail or from the new Help/My Downloads and Keys menu item, and is set to remain available for 10 years after an order.

The new release further delivers an important milestone in the effort to implement better mechanisms for documenting and delivering version changes. Changelog details for available, installed and past versions, including early access builds, are now accessible from the Changelog tab under Help/About, and as part of the software update notifications.

Other new and enhanced features include:
  • Gorgeous resizable and reconfigurable virtual keyboards, now also with multi-touch support and a dock option
  • Even more advanced game controller configuration and testing features than ever before (under Tools/Options/Input, Help/Developer/Test and in the Input tab of the title editor)
  • Improved Disk Toolbox (convert disks to images and vice versa, from the Tools menu) and support for direct-attached disks (to more easily share media between Classic Amiga and emulation systems, via the Media tab of the title editor)
  • New general input options (add your own commands like Load last snapshot, Cartridge freeze button, Open debugger, etc.)
  • New CD drive controls (e.g. for CDTV) and improved fullscreen mode controls
  • Updated WinFellow plugin interface to support 64-bit version and HDF images
  • Improvements to AmigaOS 4/PowerPC support (better detection of bootable and non-bootable states, increased number of reserved blocks, etc.)
  • Support for some of the latest Windows 10 features introduced in versions 1709, 1809 and 1903
  • Continuing best-in-class support for content curation, high-DPI and mixed display environments, real and virtual game controller and keyboard input
The Setup Wizard and Tip of the Day components were also refined, aiming to ease setup and feature discovery. These tutorial functions can also be invoked from the Help menu, and are designed to expose important and lesser-known features to both novice and longtime users.

Overall, the project remains permeated by attention to detail, usability and beauty, which have been part of our Amiga software development work for more than three decades.

As always, we are grateful to everyone who supported this project and to the friends who shared our passion and vision during these sometimes challenging, but always bright Amiga days. Please stay tuned for more to come. (snx)

Amiga Future: 20 years anniversary website relaunch
Andreas Magerl writes: On 09.09.99 the Amiga Future webpage went online for the first time. At that time, the webpage barely had content and only a few visitors daily. Meanwhile, the Amiga Future webpage has become one of the biggest websites for the Amiga. In addition to thousands of games and other downloads (including hundreds of commercial titles), the Amiga Future webpage is home to one of the largest cheats collections for the Amiga.

But also several thousand reviews, previews and other articles about the Amiga you can read for free on the Amiga Future webpage. Many sold-out Amiga Future issues are also available on the webpage for free. Of course you are always up to date with the news and calendar about the Amiga. The news section is currently being expanded. We are looking for helpers for the news and other areas of the homepage. If anyone wants to help, please write to us.

After 20 years the time has come and we have reworked the complete Amiga Future webpage. Of course, some mistakes may have crept in. If you discover any, please let us know. Unfortunately, the passwords of the accounts could not be transferred to the new page for all users. If you receive an error when logging in, please request a new password from the webpage.

Have fun with the new homepage of the Amiga Future. (snx)

IBrowse 2.5: Interview with Oliver Roberts
The release of IBrowse 2.5 - 13 years after the latest update of the only web browser specifically created for the Amiga that is still in development - started an argument in the german comments section of our related news-item with regard to its price/performance ratio. A good reason for our editor Daniel Reimann to talk about this to the main developer of IBrowse, Oliver Roberts.

In the preliminary talk to the actual interview found below, confronted with a certain disappointment of our readers regarding the features of version 2.5 and their critique of the price, the developer expressed his understanding in both cases, but pointed out that it had always been made clear what IBrowse 2.5 was going to be - and that it had been never promised to include CSS or HTML5; instead the plan had just been to deliver an AmigaOS 4 native version. And regarding the price, Oliver Roberts would like to advise users to only think about paying for what is available at the time of purchase and not the hope of something which may or may not be added in the future.

amiga-news.de (AN): Are you satisfied with the keys sold so far for IBrowse 2.5? Can you give some figures? Does the future development depend on the number of sold keys?

Oliver Roberts (OR): Not necessarily - no keys were sold the last 12 years, yet development did not stop. I won't give figures, but I am both encouraged and pleasantly surprised at the sales so far. Particularly for new licences, as I had assumed most people had purchased 2.x by now and we were mainly aiming 2.5 as an upgrade for existing customers.

I'm very grateful for the many positive messages I have received and the general excitement that many IBrowse users have expressed with the release of 2.5. It reminds me of the good times I had around 2.3 and 2.4 releases. In the immediate future, I plan on continued development and more regular updates to 2.x, but this probably won't include HTML5/CSS.

AN: Why is the price quite expensive for a new 2.5 licence, comparatively, although no current internet standards were implemented?

OR: Depends which way you look at it, I guess! Sorting out the pricing structure was highly complex, mainly because of the addition of the AmigaOS 4 native version and I primarily wanted to be fair to our loyal existing customers, not devaluing what they have already paid for 1.x and/or 2.x in the past. So, I decided to freeze the price for a new license at the same price IBrowse has always been (in the real world, prices increase with inflation). In 1996, I paid the equivalent of 55 Euro for IBrowse 1.x and this was a lot of money back then - 23 years on, not so much comparatively. Also, all the development on the whole 2.x line since the late 1990s should be considered in the price - 55 Euro for thousands of hours development time.

I fully realise that IBrowse 2.5 is not for everybody. I'm not forcing anybody to buy it and encourage everybody to try the demo before paying for it. People are entitled to their opinions and if people don't like 2.5, or don't have a use for it, then I'm fine with that - just move on. On the flipside, some users have been eagerly waiting for 2.5 for ages, knowing full well what the finished feature set was, having been published on our website and discussed on the mailing list.

As I've tried to make clear on the website over the past few years, 2.5 was never about CSS/HTML5. Initially, it was just going to be rushed out as an AmigaOS 4 native 2.4 with only important bug fixes thrown in for AmigaOS 3.x users. Obviously, things did not pan out that way, for many, many reasons, and 2.5 is so much more than it originally was going to be, with continued development over the past 13 years. Unfortunately, only our beta testers got to experience the progress first hand. It is impossible to convey from the history logs exactly how much time was spent on 2.5, since some entries will have taken 10 minutes, whilst others have taken 100+ hours!

AN: When can users expect a version of IBrowse which has CSS, HTML5 or an updated Javascript implemented?

OR: I make no promises that this may ever come, but if it does, it will be in IBrowse 3.0. Some work was done on the CSS parser even before IBrowse 2.4 was released, but most likely this is itself in need of a major update. To be honest, I've not thought much beyond the release of 2.5 yet, as I had been concentrating my efforts on bringing everything together to get 2.5 done.

IBrowse 2.5 still has a pretty good Javascript core engine - what is completely separate and lets it down now is the lack of access to browser/host-side elements. But, this more an issue with the current old restrictive internal DOM implementation, rather than a Javascript issue per se.

AN: With regard to the previous question - is it possible at all to add those features to the current IBrowse without having to completely rewrite it?

OR: Not at all. The GUI side of things wouldn't need rewriting, but the HTML engine would need a complete rewrite from scratch. Firstly, there are the HTML/CSS parsers which turn the source text into the internal DOM structures, and those structures are then read by the layout engine to properly display them in the browser. You can't change one of these things without the other - it is all intertwined. You can't just add bits of CSS support to the existing engine as you go along, for example. Everything has to be rewritten.

IBrowse 2.x's HTML engine was designed in a time when essentially it was mainly images and form elements that were accessible via Javascript, whereas now it is much more complex and Javascript needs to be able to interface with every single element on a page, visible or not. This design really does not fit the current requirements of HTML5/CSS and DHTML, hence there is no way around it but to rewrite or port some existing solution. IMHO, Javascript is used way too much and to unnecessary extremes these days, but that's another story!

AN: How much money future versions of IBrowse will cost if a user has bought already a 2.5 key?

OR: There are no plans for any further charges for updates to the 2.x line. Free updates/fixes for 2.5 will be coming soon, maybe even 2.6. Should 3.0 ever happen (and there is no guarantee or immediate plans for this), bringing a new, more modern HTML engine, this would not be free. IBrowse 3.0 was always going to be a paid for update, with AmigaOS 4/PowerPC support and a new CSS capable HTML engine - IBrowse 2.5 is essentially what IBrowse 3.0 would have been without a new HTML engine. Hence, those who buy or upgrade to 2.5 would get a better discount upgrade price to 3.0 than those upgrading from earlier versions. I can't give figures on something that may never happen, but as I hope the upgrade discounts on 2.5 prove, any 3.0 upgrade prices would be just as fair.

AN: Do you have some special desire or expectations to the remaining Amiga users?

OR: Not sure I understand the question, but I'm just as much an Amiga user as a developer. Past years prove that the Amiga community will never really change, apart from getting smaller :(. As long as Amiga users are happy to use their Amigas, there is nothing wrong with that and there are still many things that Amigas can do better. I'm pleased that some Amiga users are happy to have IBrowse 2.5 at last.

AN: What are your expectations concerning the future development of Amiga hardware?

OR: I don't really have any expectations at this stage. I'm still happy using my AmigaOne XE as my main Amiga, but also want to try to get my Amiga 1200 motherboard fixed somehow. It will be great to see new hardware out there, although I tend to get the impression that recent efforts have not gone so well (unfinished/broken software and hardware). It all seems rather confusing to me and recent hardware efforts leave a nasty taste of unprofessionalism (makes the Eyetech days seem perfect). (snx)

Hans de Ruiter (Warp 3D Nova, Radeon-2D driver) has developed a FTP server for AmigaOS, which probably will be also ported to Windows. This is a prerelease which according to the developer "means that there are rough edges there are missing features, the biggest one being the configuration GUI. A web based GUI is planned". Several licence versions are available starting with a single user licence for 40 Euro up to a licence for 10 installations for 160 Euro. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Preview to AmigaOS 3.2
In July AmigaOS 3.1.4.1 was released. Under the title link now Thomas 'ThoR' Richter is giving a preview to the forthcoming AmigaOS 3.2.

First he has published a picture (only visible for registered users) of the Workbench which shows features that have been already implemented and which the readers should find. If a new feature was found by a reader it is either confirmed, or not.
  • GadTools now are font sensitive which is used by the new preferences editor and other system tools.
  • Regarding the print setting now the name of the output device can be specified instead of choosing the parallel or serial interface.
  • The name of the title line can be changed.
  • Windows can be iconified.
  • The Shell remebers commands which have been already entered. You can also search through these commands.
  • The Shell offers an input assistance.
  • There is a new, minimal AUX-Handler which enables tab expansion to also work over the serial line.

AROS: IconPoser 1.0 - Icon manipulation program for Icaros Desktop
The author wrote: "IconPoser is a Lua based icon compositing/manipulation program for Icaros Desktop, which creates AROS compatible, double-state icons from two different images in PNG format. Just select an image for the relaxed status and another one for the selected status and click the "Join&Save" button to compose your new .info file!

IconPoser can create icons for your tools, your drawers and your projects. It can set stack size for tools, default tool for projects and copy tooltypes to your new icon from a different one. It can replace an existing icon either keeping original tooltypes or not, and it also checks for mistakes, when trying to overwrite a common file with a icon." (snx) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOS 4: Scripts for Streaming Twitch.tv and Mixer.com videos
George 'walkero' Sokianos writes: If you use to watch your beloved Amiga and Retro streamers on Twitch.tv or Mixer.com, but you do that on your PC, and that doesn't feel authentic, don't worry any more. There is aiostreams to help you watch them on the Workbench of your AmigaOS 4 system.

aiostreams is a package of Python scripts that help you watch live or recorded streams from many online video platforms. At least, that's what it wishes to be. Right now Twitch.tv and Mixer.com are supported, but there are plans for more to be added in the future.

aiostreams runs from the shell. If you know the channel URL you want to watch, you just have to use it as a parameter beside the script of the equivalent network.

Unfortunately, the above websites are not rendering right on any of our browsers, and finding available streams is a difficult task. No, you don't have to start your windows machine to do that. Just use the search capabilities of the scripts, see the top games or the top streams and choose what you are going to watch. You can even list the available recorded videos of a channel.

All these are well documented in an AmigaGuide file inside aiostreams package. Each script has helpful documentation right into the shell. Please, read it before you start using any of the scripts.

Versions for MorphOS, AROS and AmigaOS 3.x are in my todo list as well. aiostreams can be found at the title link and at my personal GitHub. If you have any requests or you would like to report any problems you have found, you can do that at: https://github.com/walkero-gr/aiostreams/issues. You can find the todo list and the status of them at https://github.com/walkero-gr/aiostreams/projects/1.
