Game Construction Kit: Scorpion Engine V2023.0
The "Scorpion Engine" developed by Erik 'earok' Hogan allows you to develop games. The engine itself is closed source, all demos and example games are open source. The editor runs under Windows. Graphics are imported as PNG files, levels created by using the editor Tiled eingesetzt. For importing and creating sounds, music and animations the Amiga formats (mod, 8svx, anim5) are used.

A few moments ago he has relesaed version 2023.0 (YouTube video). Changes:
  • Major performance optimisations make this by far the fastest release of the Scorpion Engine to date.
  • New features like "maskless blit" and draw clipping, and the new "Big Ship" demo shows how these can be used to render massive actors with relatively minimal performance overhead.
  • New "line of sight" demo shows how an enemy can be made to chase the player only if there's no walls between them.
  • Filters in the editor allow you to quickly search through long lists of actors, animation, code and blocks.
  • Powerful new randomizer based on the XORSHIFT* algorithm.
  • Improvement for the "foreach" command, actors can be filtered by more than just the type of actor.
  • Channels can now be reserved specifically for music or SFX.
  • Various other fixes and improvements.
You can support the developer on his Patreon website. (dr)

Video: "Tunnel" animation recovered
As an user reports on his YouTube channel "Elpis Is Hope", he happened to have in his old CD backups an old "tunnel" animation that he had originally created for the advertising agency "Propaganda".
It is a low-resolution HAM8-ANIM8 format recorded directly from his old A4000 onto a VHS tape. He said that the playback in the video was not smooth because he did not have time to properly record and time the 50/60 fps conversion. (dr)

Do it yourself: Another solution for using an external HDMI upscaler
At the title link, 'c0pperdragon' describes ways to achieve pixel-precise HDMI output of Amiga video signals instead of upconverting the final analog output signal. Besides solutions that move the RGBtoHDMI system completely into the computer, internal modifications make it possible to connect the former alternately to several computers.

One possibility for this is an adapter board that is placed under the Denise chip (amiga-news.de reported). In the meantime, a second variant was added: With the DB23 hack, eight less used of the 23 pins of the Amiga video connector are re-purposed by re-soldering, to make all 12 color bits directly available without changing anything on the case. Using an adapted cable with the required pinout, the RGBtoHDMI system, that can thus be connected externally, can then upscale the picture with comparatively lower latency. (snx)

AmigaOS 4: C runtime library clib2 v1.0.0 beta 8
Andrea 'afxgroup' Palmate has created a fork of the official clib2 library, included in adtools. This library is exclusively for AmigaOS 4 to make it easy to maintain and to be able to add all the missing clib2 functions that are hard to add on 68k Amigas. The goal is to make it POSIX compliant and also fix any C++ problems that exist with newer compilers (amiga-news.de reported).

Yesterday he has released the eighth beta version with the following changes:
  • Added internal pthreads library
  • Added new missing math functions
  • Added dprintf
  • Fixed a memory leak when using posix_memalign
  • Some constructors/destructors changes
  • Fixed ncurses/termios problems. Now ncurses can be used without any problem
  • Added stdio_ext functions (except __freadptr)
  • Some test progams makefile changes. Now it is possible to compile tests using GNUMakefile
  • Many other internal changes

Crowdfunding: Book "STAMIGA: The Flame Wars"
Microzeit from Germany and Editions64K from France are going to publish "STAMIGA: The Flame Wars", a book that is supposed to illuminate the competition for the number 1 home computer between the Amiga and the Atari ST in the mid and late 1980s, with the following key data:
  • English Hardback Edition
  • ca. 400 colour pages
  • High-quality offset print
  • 170 × 230 mm portrait format
  • Special cover refinement
  • 135 gr/m² silk-matt illustration paper
  • Finest print raster (120)
  • Surface sealing (varnished pages)
  • Made in Germany
The book aims to combine a fact- and opinion-based approach by providing a collection of newly written background articles, comparing hypotheses with facts, including eyewitness accounts, and presenting analyses of historical media. The crowdfunding, which still has 21 days to go, has already raised about 7000 Euros of the 22,000 needed. (dr)
