USB: RapidRoad might be destroyed by hot plugging USB devices In a thread on a1k.org, owners of a RapidRoad USB expansion from Individual Computers report that their hardware has been destroyed by plugging an external device into one of the USB ports while the computer was turned on. This process is referred to as 'hot plugging' and is actually a central part of the USB protocol - but in some cases seems to result in a dead RapidRoad. Jens 'Paradroid' Schönfeld from Individual Computers explains (German) that some power supply units react to a sudden increase of the load - i.e. when the users inserts a USB device - with a voltage peak that might be fatal for the RapidRoad. Due to the low amount of known cases, the vendor is currently unable to identify problematic PSU types or additonal circumstances that might worsen the problem. He generally advises users to stay away from ATX power supplies though. According to Schönfeld, he still has a sufficient number of RapidRoad units in stock ro replace expansions that break down during the warranty period, since so far he had to replace only 13 cards.
